Each Balearic state school place costs €7,300 a year, making the islands the seventh highest spenders nationally. But good academic results have been sorely lacking, with 23.9 per cent of children failing to pass their final primary school assessment, the Balearic Family Policy Institute (IPFB) announced. Ibiza is all set for €375m makeover A MASSIVE tourist complex is planned to raise the profile of Ibiza as the ‘pearl of the Mediterranean.’ Spanning 77 hectares, the €375 million plan includes the construction of an 18-hole golf course, a 41,000m2 shopping centre, industrial and residential areas, a five star aparthotel as well as various green zones and sports facilities. Entitled ‘Plan for Excellency Ibiza’ it was unveiled by Abel Matutes, General Director of the Paladium Hotel Group.
The project intends to completely re-vamp all the properties in the rundown touristic area of Playa d’en Bossas, on Ibiza’s southern coast. It is projected not only to raise Ibiza’s image as ‘pearl of the Mediterranean’ but also to surpass the positive impact of rival project EuroVegas which is to be built in Madrid. Matute believes the two macroinvestments to be fundamental for Spain’s recovery from the economic crisis.

Couple’s eviction suicide FACED with being turned out of their home in Cas Català, Calvià, a retired couple decided to take their own lives. Upon receiving final notice that their eviction was scheduled for February 19, Pedro, aged 68 and his wife Julita, aged 67, wrote a note explaining their decision and apparently proceeded to take a medicine overdose. At 2:20pm on Tuesday, the
couple was found lying on their bed by their daughter who immediately called 112 emergency. Upon the arrival of the ambulance, there was nothing more to be done except certify their death. A post mortem examination will be carried out in order to determine the exact cause of death. Neighbours said they were well liked around town and it was well
known that the couple had been having financial problems “for quite some time.” They hadn’t paid the community fees for three years, their debt was said to be €6,000, but no one had taken legal action against them because of their high regard in the community. Airport makeover to create 100 new jobs PALMA Son Sant Joan Airport plans to more than double the size of its shopping area and invest €12 million in order to boost revenues. Airport operator AENA unveiled
plans this week for the total makeover of its duty-free retail area on the fourth floor, creating 100 jobs and adding nine new shops and restaurants. Existing space will
expand from 3,463 square metres to 6,048 square metres. Financing for the project will come from prestigious textile brands Zara, H&M, Mango and Desigual, to name a few, as well as other food concessionaries. Beware, ex-scam salesman warns A MAN held by Thai police for five weeks after being caught selling scam investments has warned expatriates in Spain to be cautious. Thirty-two-year-old Rob Stafford* who is now selling cars on the Costa Blanca, said the ‘boiler room’ process he worked in before moving on to Spain, was aimed at tricking people of all nationalities all over the world. “Basically I was employed to sell investments over the telephone, using dishonest and disloyal tactics to encourage would-be investors to put their lifetime savings into shares that did not exist.” Rob, who is single and admits that he knew it was criminal, turned to the scam to earn money, and was
paid on a commission only basis. Asked how well he was paid, he merely answers “I did OK,” admitting that on being deported from Thailand he went to Malaysia, where for a short time he continued to sell ‘boiler room’ products, before deciding to get back into proper selling here in Spain. “I am sure there are ‘boiler room’ sales operations here, but I have had enough of them. They are just a scam. “Now I have a proper job, with a salary and all legal documents. I have turned my back on boiler room selling,” he says. When working in the Thai capital of Bangkok, Rob was employed alongside 11 other men and three women some British and several other nationalities - but after just a few weeks the scam was traced back to them, and all were arrested and put into a detention centre. “My colleagues and our manager were held, but the real bosses were not arrested. They just left us to rot. “We were locked in a room with 80 other people. We had to sleep on the floor with only one hour of freedom per week. “The living conditions were hell.” They were freed after five weeks and deported, with their passports stamped and instructions not to return to Thailand for five years.

€242m cocaine haul biggest in 12 years JUST 190 grammes of cocaine led police to the largest drug haul since 2001 in Spain! Four tons of cocaine - enough to provide 82 million doses - was found in the €242 million bust on the Costa Blanca. Three Spaniards aged 49 - 56 have been remanded in custody in a police operation codenamed ‘Pluto.’ Enquiries are ongoing, and more arrests have not been ruled out. Guardia Civil analysts found that the 190 grammes of cocaine
confiscated in Albacete had been in contact with processed leather. Subsequent investigations led them to a shoe-manufacturer in Elche, near Alicante, who had imported six containers of leather from Colombia. The merchandise entered Spain at Algeciras in Cadiz and practically all of the shipment, loaded on pallets, was taken to an apparently abandoned warehouse in Elche. Police swooped a day later, taking the decision to act quickly
because the warehouse was rented only the evening before the pallets arrived. They knew that the drug would be moved on without delay, a central government representative explained. Police suspicions proved correct, as a pallet was already loaded on a fork-lift when they entered the warehouse. An Algeciras warehouse was also searched and police found more pallets of leather but no drugs. A search of 15 Elche properties

Tensions rise off The Rock THE incursion of a Spanish warship into British waters off Gibraltar has prompted urgent talks in London by the governments of both countries. The armed patrol vessel, which typically carries special forces and marines, was warned repeatedly to leave British waters by the Royal Navy. The Foreign Office lodged a diplomatic protest with Madrid over the most serious incident off The Rock in half a century. The warship Tornado is a 94-metre-long vessel and spent 20 minutes in British waters. It is unprecedented in modern times for such a large military vessel to assert itself off the Gibraltar coast.

Operation clean-up after binmen’s 10-day strike THE week-long operation to clear piles of rotting rubbish from the streets of Sevilla is over. Around 7,000 tons of garbage was left in the streets after a 10-day strike by dustmen. The 1,600 employees of Public Cleaning and Environment Protection Society Lipasam, the municipal cleaning service in Sevilla, returned to work after an agreement was reached. Car refuge after quake fears RESIDENTS in towns in the province of Jaen were sleeping in their cars amid fears of further earthquakes. Last week tremors were felt in the region on Tuesday (February 5), reaching 3.7 on the Richter Scale. Since October last year, more than 1,500 earthquakes in the La Loma district have been recorded. The National Geographical Institute says it does not know why these tremors are happening. It says the ones in the province of Jaen are of a low magnitude, but fairly close to the surface, which is why they are being felt. Mainland Spain and Portugal suffer about 100 episodes of earthquakes every year, but they are usually of a very low magnitude.

This is almost 8 per cent fewer than in 2011, when there were 101 million. Last year’s figure is the lowest since 2005 when 94 million were doing the rounds, according to the Bank of Spain.
By 2007, the year before the economic crisis there were 114 million of the purplecoloured notes in circulation, that is 18.4 per cent more than in December 2012. There might be fewer around, but €500 notes represent 67.2 per cent of the cash in Spanish pockets. Most commonly handled were €20 and

Cataluña received more tourist cash than any other autonomous regions, with €12,608 million, an increase of 13.8 per cent on 2012. Baleares earned €10,092 million, Andalucia €8,126 million and the Valencian Community €4,840 million.

Now the Financial Services Authority will examine why the rates vary so much.
An annuity is an income paid by companies in exchange for an individual’s pension pot. It is worked out according to the size of the retirement fund and other factors. On retirement pensioners can take their pension fund to shop around for the best deal, but regulators are worried many accept the offer of their current pension provider, and so potentially lose out on income.

Spain slowly chokes under weight of unemployment THE disastrous level of unemployment in Spain is asphyxiating the nation, so read a headline in El Pais, stating an opinion already shared by many. According to latest figures there are 1.9 million households in Spain in which all the working-age family members have been unemployed for two years or more. This is insupportable, whatever one’s political point of view and, of course, 1.9 million households of this kind means 4.6 million people on the unemployed list, a huge proportion of the national total. Breaking down these figures to discover what these people were doing before being thrown out of work, it seems likely that the majority of the main breadwinners were in the construction industry and associated activities (suppliers, transport, etc) whilst many of the wives and mothers held down jobs in local, central or regional government. At the close of 2012 the public sector had, during the year, shed 218,900 staff according to figures from EPA (Encuesta de Poblacón Actitiva), which found also that the private sector had been hit almost as hard. Many of the job losses in the private sector were probably the result of the merging of a number of local and provincial savings banks (cajas) and the complete winding-up of others. These ‘cajas’ too often relied upon the construction industry for their business, making and

servicing loans to ‘promoters’ and when the fragility, not to say illegality, of some of that activity was laid open to the public gaze, the ‘game was up’. We should remember however that ‘construction’ included activities other than bricks, mortar and concrete. There are, and were, the architects and engineers, their office and support staff and even those in the ‘ayuntamiento’
planning departments, all suddenly out of work and with very little likelihood of finding anything even remotely similar. Then, further up the scale, we find the larger banks which had been making loans for important infrastructural projects which the clients, central and regional governments suddenly found were not viable in the present economic climate. These large banks, with perhaps Bankia the best known, were deemed too big to be allowed to fail and had to be rescued with multi-billion bailout loans from the EU, the terms of which demanded that the recipients be brought back to profitability. That meant the closure of hundreds of branches, with the loss of thousands of jobs. It all comes back to the construction bubble, and future governments of whatever political colour should make it their business never to allow such cupidity to rise again. Other occupations and markets must be found and exploited, activities that will not just provide jobs but will also generate income. It would need a complete change in the Spanish psyche so that manufacturing industry becomes the bedrock of the nation’s economy. This cannot be achieved overnight. It might take 20 years, but however long it takes, this must be the target for the future of Spain and its people.

www.euroweeklynews.com As European countries struggle to rebuild their economies and reduce their deficits, many are relying on their wealthier residents to provide more tax revenue. Higher earners are being hit with higher taxes, and governments are also looking for other ways to tax the rich. Besides raising tax rates, governments are taking a closer look at the tax affairs and lifestyles of the wealthy to find those who hide income and wealth from the tax authorities. While this article mainly reviews what the UK’s HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is doing, other countries are now taking a much stronger stance against tax evaders. HMRC has a specific unit to target wealthier taxpayers. The Affluent Compliance Team was set up in October 2011 with a mandate to collect an extra £586 million by the end of 2015. It brought in £75 million in additional tax by the end of 2012, well ahead of expectations. In January HMRC confirmed that it will recruit another 100 tax inspectors for the Team, taking the total to 300. The remit is also being extended. The Team currently looks at taxpayers with an annual income above £150,000 and wealth between £2.5 million and £20 million. It will now include those with wealth above £1 million. Taxman Keeps Eye On The Wealthy

warned: “Dodging tax is immoral, illegal and unaffordable and the minority who cheat are increasingly finding that, thanks to the work of the Affluent Team, they have made a big mistake.” The UK is not alone in understanding the benefit of hiring more tax inspectors. The Portuguese government plans to employ 1,000 highly qualified inspectors this year. One of their key jobs will be to assess bank accounts. Back in the UK, in January the Crown Prosecution Service announced that it will increase the number of tax files it handles fivefold, with a view to prosecution. In 2010/11 it secured 200 successful convictions against tax cheats. This increased to 550 the following year, with the conviction rate remaining high at 86%.
HMRC will now refer sufficient cases to the Crown Prosecution Service to enable prosecutions to rise from 165 individuals in 2010/11, to 565 this year and then 1165 in 2014/15. HMRC has various ways of collecting data. There is a large flow of information these days, internally between different government agencies and globally from exchange of information treaties. It has also received information from stolen bank data. It uses sophisticated data mining techniques to look for anomalies between the income individuals declare and their lifestyle indicators. For example, it can identify people who own overseas property, and then apply risk assessment tools to highlight those who do not appear to be able to afford it. Internet research is proving increasingly useful. HMRC can look for holiday rentals advertised online and people talking about luxury homes and lifestyles on Twitter. The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 allows HMRC to authorise its own surveillance requests. It is increasingly examining records of taxpayers’ emails, text messages, phone calls and websites visited. Last year the tax authority piloted a scheme that used credit reference
agencies to cross check people’s declared income against their spending patterns. This identifies individuals whose income and wealth do no match what they have declared. This will now be introduced nationally, and around two million people could be scrutinised under the programme. This is likely to target self-employed individuals who under declare their income, but could also target those with hidden offshore accounts or who receive inheritances or bonuses. The UK is not the only country to look at spending habits. It was reported last year that the Spanish tax office had won the right to make El Corte Inglés, Spain’s largest department store and popular with wealthy expatriates, provide account details on their customers who had spent €30,000 or more on their store credit cards over 2006 and 2007. In December HMRC published a document called “Closing in on tax evasion”, outlining its approach to fighting tax evasion and future plans. The plans include: • Send hundreds of letters challenging people with secret overseas bank accounts to explain their position. • Establish a new centre of excellence on offshore tax evasion and develop a more proactive
approach to international engagement to tackle it. • Introduce new data driven tools to help identify affluent individuals who are evading tax, including data from banks on financial transactions. • Seek new data sources to improve ability to spot wealthy tax evaders, including information from overseas and data openly accessible on the internet. No-one wants to pay more tax than necessary, but you should only ever use tax planning arrangements that are legitimate and approved in your country of residence. Beckham is paying the price for just being a genuinely nice guy stand on, but he isn’t receiving a cent, the charity is. He is simply, and legally, cutting out the middleman and putting the money straight into the hands of a needy cause. Beckham doesn’t need to dodge the taxman when it comes to his football salary. According to the author of the book entitled ‘Beckham’, about 70 per cent of the star’s income doesn’t even come from football, but from modelling underpants and other endorsement deals with brands like Adidas. In fact the Sunday Times Rich List estimates him to be worth £160 million (€185 million). There are enough wealthy people jumping through legal loopholes in order to avoid paying taxes that should rightly go towards healthcare, education, infrastructure and the like. These are the people we should be hounding. So really, what’s the big deal about Beckham and this donation? Let’s celebrate when a wealthy person actually manages to give their money directly to a good cause. After all, who is the better beneficiary? The needy children or the taxman?

If even the Spanish can think this way WHY can’t we get things printed in English too? In the UK nearly every bit of paperwork is in eight different languages. Is it too much to ask for this procedure from Spain after 30 odd years of Brits living/holidaying here, adding dramatically to the wealth of Spain? My husband and I have spent a fortune, and still are, on trying to learn Spanish. However, most of us Brits are pensioners. Our brains are not what they used to be. Venus rising WITH regards to that strange light in the sky over Malaga, the writer’s brother-in-law may well be right that it is Venus (UFO dispute, Letters Issue 1439). It is the brightest object in the morning sky at the moment, and the colours can come from the fact that the light from Venus is being defracted by the dust and water in our atmosphere into its constituent colours, a bit like a rainbow. Most satellites that you can see will be moving slowly across the sky in a very smooth and nonblinking manner, so if the object was stationary it is unlikely to be a satellite. Gushing praise I MUST take issue with Mike Walsh’s gushing praise for Tehran. He surely isn’t that naive that the video he had ‘the privilege to watch’ would show the public hanging area where criminals and gays are strung up for all to see, or the stoning ground for adulterous women. As for Iraq, it was peaceful, he says. Does he not remember that Saddam Hussein started two wars by invading Kuwait and Iran? As for Budapest, he is correct, it is beautiful, but once outside the city the old Stalinist blocks are much in evidence, and yes the folks are delightful, but poor as church mice. I READ the article about Ryanair (Street talk, Issue 1437). My wife and I travel from Alicante to Manchester six or seven times a year. Ryanair is very often the cheapest, so we have plenty of experience, all positive, of travelling with them. We never choose any extras and book with a euro debit card north and a sterling debit card south, thus incurring no card charges. Facing the music for drink-driving FINES for drink-driving can fall under two categories: Administrative and Criminal. Criminal: Drink-driving is considered a criminal offence when a test shows more than 0.6mg of alcohol per litre of air or 1.2g per litre of blood, even if no accident is caused. The driver will face trial and can be given a prison sentence of three to six months or fines of between six and 12 months as well as up to 91 days of community service, and a ban from driving for up to four years. If the drink-driving offence is added to other charges including causing injury, negligent manslaughter, serious disobedience, dangerous driving and others, the prison terms
and fines can be much greater. Administrative: Drink-driving is considered an administrative offence if the driver is over the legal alcohol limit of 0.25mg/l of air or 0.15mg/l for new and professional drivers like taxi or bus drivers, but beneath the limits mentioned in the paragraph above. This, as well as refusing breath and blood tests, can lead to fines of between €300 and €600 and a driving ban of up to three months. Refusing a test can also be classed as serious disobedience with penalties of up to a year in jail. Drink-driving can also lead to loss of between four and six points from a Spanish driving licence.

The whole place was allegedly packed with weaponry: tanks, rocket launchers, armoured trucks. Now I’ve searched and ‘Googled’ high and low and can find no mention of this cache of arms anywhere. Of course, if you think about it, the scenario makes perfect sense. If, Heaven forbid London was overrun by some opposing force or other, this would be the royal family’s formidable last line of defence and, to date, something of a surprise! What worried, and finally per-
suaded, me to go ahead with this revelation, was the fact that my muso friend was, without a search, actually allowed to take his van and park it alongside all this alleged weaponry. What if he had been a subversive? What if his van had contained enough explosives to blow up the whole shebang, right in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world? The mind boggles. What do you think? Personally I’m at a loss. One thing I do know is the next time Her Maj asks me to stay the night, I will most definitely decline. Can you imagine kipping with the knowledge that you’re sleeping over enough explosives to take out a large portion of the city? I await your opinions with interest. Dance little sister... and rise up against violent and abusive men LAST week I was writing about how much I wanted a revolution. Turns out I’m not the only one. What are you doing today, Valentine’s Day? Fancy a dance around Plaza Major with a billion people? What, McLeod, have you finally lost it? Okay, let me rewind. You see, I just Googled ‘how many people live on the planet?’ as I couldn’t quite get my head around it. Wikipedia says that the United States Census Bureau estimates that there are over seven billion people living on the planet now. That’s a lot of people. So there’s about 3.5 billion females (Adam, Eve, law of averages, I didn’t use Wikipedia for this bit, so maybe I am a little out). We accept that? So how about this statistic, (it will shock you), one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped in her lifetime.

So, elementary maths, that means that about a billion women will be in some way physically or sexually abused during their lifetime. That is one billion mothers, daughters, sisters, partners, and friends. Yet, most of the world remains silent and indifferent. The time has come to put a stop to the violence, and to
the silence that surrounds it. It is appalling, and I WON’T accept it. I’m thinking about Malala Yousafzai who was shot in the head for having the audacity to think that girls have the right to education in Pakistan, and I am thinking about the young Indian woman who was gang raped on a bus. And that’s just two high profile stories in the past month. Imagine a billion of these stories. So today (Thursday), one billion
women and those who love them are invited to walk out, rise up, dance, and strike to demand an end to violence against women and girls. Already, thousands of activists and organisations around the globe have signed on and events are being planned in countries all over the planet. Women’s, human rights, labour, economic justice, environmental, faith-based, and LGBTQ groups, as well as artists and high profile
lawmakers are coming together. www.onebillionrising.org is part of V-Day (www.vday.org) which is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/ Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and other works. So the idea is: if you don’t accept this, and you think you would like in some way to show that you refuse to accept violence against women and girls as a given then you can stand up and be counted. You don’t have to turn up at a demo in the middle of Palma (although, it will be great, you have to be at the Plaza Major in Palma at 3.30pm today). Whisked off to love’s city for a little bit of romance A
NOTHER week, another saint to pay our respects to here in Spain. But Saint Valentine happens to be a worldwide phenomenon, second in reach only to New Year’s Day, so whether you’re living in Torremolinos, Tokyo or Timbuktu, there is no escaping this day allocated to romance. Come tomorrow (February 15) you can of course be back at each others’ throats, arguing like cat and dog, but for Valentine’s itself, we are meant to be struck by Cupid’s arrow, exchanging keepsakes over candlelit dinners, ideally in Paris, or Venice. So, let’s be honest: how many cards did you get? How many dozens of roses? To make things easier, let’s categorise the answers: A. All of the above, in plentiful supply, while whisked off to the City of Love. Oh, and a Cartier Love Bangle. Doesn’t everyone? B. A recycled card and a cactus, accompanied by a peck on the cheek with promises of ‘let’s go out when it’s not so expensive’.

I can only hope that you managed to clear the vast pile of cards from the front-door mat in order to make the flight in time. But then it was a private charter, so it waited for you, n’est-ce pas? Just remember to drop off the roses with the neighbour, since they will have wilted by the time you return. Is, perchance, this a fairly new relationship or is your Valentine a Russian oligarch? Just a lucky guess. If you answered B, then one must salute the thriftiness of your other half.
LOVE CACTUS: What did you receive this year? These are hard times after all and a cactus does last a whole lot longer than flowers and can be a useful weapon should a burglar strike. If you have ever
had a cactus spine embedded in a finger, you know what I mean. Peering into my crystal ball, I reckon you’ve been in this relationship a fair few years; it’s comfortable like a slipper but low on surprises. If you answered C, you may be footloose and fancy-free or you’ve been in a relationship for more years than you would care to admit; in fact, you sometimes have to think twice to remember his name. And you are right, Valentine’s Day is, indeed, a trumped-up commercial ploy for florists and restaurants to make us all feel guilty. You are cunning to avoid its evil grip. Still, relationship experts suggest that we should pay more heed to romance, be it on Valentine’s Day or any other day. Listening to and praising each other is, apparently, high on the list of things we tend to forget over time That is all from me, Cupid, this week. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and tend to my cactus.

Veggies only MCDONALD’S is set to open the first ever vegetarian only restaurant this year. The meat-free eatery in India will be the chain’s first ever vegetarian outlet and the planned location is in the north of the country at the Golden Temple in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar. The chain plans to open a second eatery in northern India later this year. Many Indians are vegetarians. Hindus view cows as sacred animals and those following the Muslim religion see pigs as ‘unclean’ so avoid pork.
Food standards slip in British hospital food NEW research has found that meat and eggs used in British hospital food do not meet consumers animal welfare standards. The Campaign for Better Hospital Food study found the majority of eggs served in hospitals is sourced from chickens reared in cages at a staggering 71 per cent. It found that 80 per cent of the chicken and pork served comes from those animals reared in conditions that do not cohere to the standard RSPCA welfare standards, meaning the animals are kept in unacceptable conditions. In contrast to these results, supermarket trends are currently seeing customers purchasing more free range

Edible waste SUPERMARKET chains have rejected the latest report claims into the amount of food they throw away. The report reveals that a staggering 50 per cent of the world’s food is wasted which equals almost two billion tonnes worth of waste. The report claims that half the food bought in the US and Europe ends up being thrown away, accelerating the path towards a food crisis. The cost of waste in the US alone is around 165 billion dollars (€123 billion). Poor storage, customer choices and strict sell-by dates are all to blame according to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. These staggering results could be prevented and used to feed the growing population as well as those in need.

CHOCOHOLIC: The chocolate stamps are sure to be a hit.
Tasty send off BELGIUM’S post office, Bpost, has introduced chocolate flavoured stamps to pay honour to Belgium’s chocolatiers. The cost of the sweet smelling stamps will be €6.20 for five different patterns and will be available to purchase in March. Five hundred thousand of the luscious limited edition stamps will be printed on special paper with the aroma of cocoa. They will then be coated in a varnish that smells like chocolate. Belgium is known as the chocolate capital of the world and this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Meteorological Institute.

Spanish system better than NHS I AM candid about my reasons for preferring Spain to the UK; one is the superior Spanish health service. Whenever expatriates take a hit because of the exchange rate or falling house prices, Britain’s bitter and twisted stay-at-homes chortle: “Don’t come crawling back when you need the NHS.” It appears that Britain’s hospitals are now clearing houses for the nation’s undertakers. Over 1,500 on slabs because of NHS blunders. They are only the ones we know about. Quite frankly, I would prefer to crawl straight to the morgue and cut out the NHS middleman.

It is revealed that 129 journalists have been told to clear their desks; the two-third survivors took a 15 per cent salary cut. Four of its local editions have closed. Are we surprised? Virtually its entire English-language edition is devoted to exposé of Spanish corruption. We want that over our breakfast tables? No, thank you.

O names, no pack drill but the NO names, no pack drill but the windups in a certain UK tabloid have me spitting Shredded Wheat. This week’s whipping boy is former Conservative minister, Chris Huhne. I dislike him but not in response to the baying sanctimonious femme Taliban. His downfall has its origins in an alliance with his wife; she took the rap when he was driving and then grassed on him. Is there a spouse anywhere who has not lied to protect their other half? Mine did in a similar way and preened herself. The Huhne marriage later broke down. With viper-like spite, his former wife blew the whistle with the outspoken intention of breaking her former husband’s career. She got her revenge; Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. This was added to by much-publicised, foul-mouthed abuse by his son. Watch out for karma. This was the cue for the femme Taliban to vent their spleen over cheating husbands. Conveniently forgotten is that statistically women are more likely to cheat than are men. How many men bring up children believing them to be their own? Never mentioned are the reasons a man abandons his wife. We are left to presume that he cannot keep a civil tongue in his trousers; he is a cad and a bounder deserving of a public whipping. The saintly spouse is always without fault.

Marriage breakdown is a human failing that is truly sad, but to presume innocence of a dumped woman is pushing credulity a little too far. This is not Queen Victoria’s reign; divorced women are not stigmatised, they are not abandoned to the streets and they enjoy nine points of the law. An aggrieved woman has incentive to be as disagreeable to her husband as she

This half-orphan by choice may regret his new status. I wonder if remorse will occur when the lad is wriggling under sheets with someone he shouldn’t. I wonder why I bothered getting married at all. Many young men also question the wisdom of tying the knot; who can blame them.

For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions. With respect to the car: 1. Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels. 2. Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm.
3. Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency. With respect to driving: 1. When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

Keith, originally from Hebden Bridge in the UK, has been a mechanic for years, mostly in Halifax in West Yorkshire until he and his wife came to Mallorca 32 years ago with the idea of buying a bar. In the end it seems that the pub life was not on the cards and after spending the better part of 32 years in Mallorca working for other people’s garages, it was time to strike out and form a new business dedicated solely to motorcycles and cars. Speedy Volvo will leave you trailing behind THE Volvo S60 Polestar Concept car is the most glamorous and lightning-quick Volvo concept car ever made, says the Swedish company. “This is Polestar’s interpretation of the Volvo S60,” says Christian Dahl, founder and CEO of Polestar, official performance partner to Volvo. “It’s a car developed with our own preferences in mind, although we know they are also shared by active drivers.” The 508-horsepower beast is exotic in its own right, but with refinement and precise handling. A huge array of performance technology results in a more intense, real-life Volvo driving experience, says the company.
But it will be a lucky driver who gets behind the wheel of this car, it is an extremely limited edition of just 10. And the price is undisclosed, although it is said the concept car cost €295,000 to build. “We approached this project by looking at the production Volvo S60 as a platform for a potential race car, and the culmination of that data went into the design of the S60 Polestar Concept,” explained Jan Andersson, chief engineer at Polestar. It delivers the genuine Volvo driving experience with a high level of power and handling. The turbocharged, inline six-cylinder engine has been tuned to deliver a considerable increase in power and
torque. The 508 horsepower and 575Nm of torque seem to dwarf the numbers associated with the horsepower and torque found in the T6 engine of the production car: 304 horsepower and 440Nm of torque. The combination of a lowered, widened and reinforced chassis, a tuned Haldex all-wheel-drive system, and Öhlins suspension makes the car uniquely suitable for both high-performance driving and long-distance travelling. According to Volvo Polestar racing driver Robert Dahlgren, “It is, by far, the most impressive street Volvo I’ve ever driven. But I must also say that the genuine Volvo feeling is still there.”
Renault group, said: “It is a great pleasure for me to be in Spain again. At the present time, and following the announcement in November of the new 2014-2016 manufacturing plan for the Spanish plants, I think you are all aware of the Renault group’s commitment to Spain.” The new Captur is due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. While prices have not been revealed yet, it is thought they should start from approximately €19,000. Renault says that the Captur blends the styling
and driving position of an SUV with the cabin space of an MPV and the agility of a compact hatchback. It is based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance B platform also used in the new Clio and Nissan Juke.
