Taxman gets tough to seize extra €6,415m
THE taxman is getting tougher. He is now scouring the nation to fill its coffers in the dire economic times, with businesses and property owners affected. Between January and July this year Hacienda the Spanish tax authority retrieved €6,415 million in
anti-fraud operations. This is 15.3 per cent more than during the same period last year. And €3 out of every €4 were recovered through control operations. Big taxpayers, mostly business, were responsible for paying over 27.5 per cent of the
amount clawed back. Hacienda, which expects to obtain a total of €8,171 million this year through control operations, is widening its net by requesting information from 51 banks regarding safety deposit boxes. There were 4,500 investigations into
apparently empty homes and premises with suspiciously high electricity consumption. Three out of every four examined were found to be occupied, without having been declared. Another 750 investigations centred on homes registered as principal residences which were second homes and therefore liable to a higher tax rate. Hacienda also carried out 1,700 ‘submerged economy’ operations, pinpointing tax irregularities in one-third of them.

It's official! Jobless have only 8.6pc work chance UNEMPLOYED people in Spain have only an 8.6 per cent chance of finding work. Five years ago, those seeking employment stood a 29.4 per cent likelihood of finding work, according to employment agency association AGETT. And indicators suggest this year’s third quarter up until the end of this month will be ‘at least’ as negative as the same period last year. Unemployment figures for recent months still do not fully reflect the outcome of the latest government spending cuts or increased taxes, AGETT warns in its latest report. Job-seekers face the greatest difficulties in Castilla-La Mancha with a 6.4 per cent probability of finding work, followed by Extremadura (6.5 per cent), the Canary Islands (6.9 per cent), Andalucia (7.7 per cent) and Cataluña (7.9 per cent). The best places to look for work at present are the Balearic islands, with a 17.9 per chance, Navarra (14.3 per

Vegas odds no worry to ONCE lottery
ONCE - which holds daily lotteries throughout Spain - is unworried that it might lose out through plans for the EuroVegas casino complex in Madrid. “It does not affect us one way or the other,” said ONCE chief, Angel Sanchez. “EuroVegas’ arrival in Spain is a further example of the increase in operators and how more of us have
to share out the cake.” ONCE, Spain's organisation for the blind, has in recent weeks launched a new Euro-jackpot lottery in eight European countries with €10 million to €90 million prizes. This is its first step outside Spain in a move to cut its dependence on the national market. Looking back, Sanchez said that for ONCE, the crisis began at the
beginning of the century when we had a share of more than 10 per cent of the market. Now it has dropped to 7.4 per cent. Since then ONCE has reinvented itself with new types of lotteries. “We went to petrol stations, ‘estancos’ (state tobacco shops) and street kiosks not previously clients of ours,” said Sanchez.

PAIN’s main cities - whatever the majority of expatriates appear to believe - are a dream for drivers compared to average large European
cities. But Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia clearly lead the way for heavy gridlock and pollution compared to other Spanish locations. In general, it takes 24 per cent longer for drivers to reach a destination in European cities because of road traffic than on normal roads.
But in Barcelona, the worst Spanish city for traffic congestion, it takes only 21 per cent longer, followed by Madrid (16 per cent) and Valencia (14 per cent). The most congested European city of 31 surveyed by a satellite navigator company was Warsaw where it takes 42 per cent longer to get anywhere. The Polish capital just gained the dubious honour of being Europe’s most congested city over the French riviera city of Marseille (41 per cent).
Coastal changes to be disclosed
Hands-on for Balearics hotels BRICKS, cranes and mortar seem to be the agenda of most Balearic hotels this winter. Up to 57 big restoration and construction projects have been registered by the Mallorca School of Architects, all of them in hotel resorts. This is a 21 per cent increase in this kind of work compared to the previous year. The works will focus on the buildings’ facades and structures. Many will also use the winter season to enlarge their premises. In Mallorca and Ibiza, 90 per cent of the hotels to be restored are on the coast, while in Menorca is more about rural hotels.

Women muggers at large By Gemma Quinn CONCERNS amongst Magaluf’s bar owners are reportedly mounting as gangs of women continue to mug and steal from men enjoying a night out.
The women, of African origin, wait until late at night and target men offering them sexual favours. Enticing them in and getting their attention, they continue to rob them, taking all they can lay their hands on.
One bar owner says the problem has got so bad in recent years he alerted a BBC 3 film crew on the island recording a show, to the situation. They then proceeded to watch and film as the women blatantly
Falling revenue affects services THE service sector in the Balearics saw a 5 per cent drop in revenue in July, compared to the same period in 2011. This is in tune with the general trend seen in Spain (-4.9 per cent), according to the latest figures provided by the National Institute of Satistics (INE). Employment in the service sector also fell, being the fourth Spanish region to lose more jobs in this field (-3.7 per cent).

Leapy’s flying curry circus takes off again AN old tradition is about to start again on Mallorca. For many years entertainer Leapy Lee held his ‘Flying Curry Circus’ nights on the island and they became a focal point for the expat community. The circus left town more than 10 years ago, but due to popular demand Leapy has agreed to resurrect the curry nights with a spicy new twist at a new venue. “In the early sixties, Bayswater in London was full of artists and actors

Many of us could hardly scrape together enough to eat, never mind pay the rent,” said Leapy, explaining how the curry nights first started. “A generous friend of mine, Eddie, operated a pirate cab company so he was one of the few working, and as he was a very generous man to boot, he decided to invite a number of showbiz folk around to his apartment every Saturday night to share an enormous pot of curry. “For some of us it was the only ‘proper’ meal we would eat all week and we would all sit round and gossip and some would bring instruments. Those who couldn’t play would tap out the rhythm using spoons. It was always a great laugh and often lasted till daybreak.” When Leapy arrived in Mallorca in 1982 his bar in Son Caliu was having trouble getting off the ground. “I decided to stage a similar event and invited local musicians to come along and sing a few songs for a freebie and sell a curry to the customers. It was a resounding success,” said Leapy.
“When I lost the bar I decided to use other people’s venues for the evening. I travelled all over the island with the curry and the show, which was when I decided to call it the ‘Flying Curry Circus’. “We eventually found a permanent venue at Bertorellis restaurant (which appropriately at that time had an old DC6 aeroplane in the grounds!) We stayed there very successfully for the next 10 years.” The Flying Curry Circus was featured a number of times on British TV and was fronted by acts including Bernard Manning, Mick Miller, Frank Carson and many old rockers from the 60s. When the restaurant was sold the new owners had different plans, so they had to finish. “Since then I have only done the occasional private function or restaurant but when Laura at Spectrum radio suggested that people would enjoy that type of thing, now I decided to give it a go”. Laura Penn had heard about these nights spoken about in legend. “Everybody who remembers them says that they were great nights of food and fun. It seemed to
me that these days people are watching what they spend but they still want to have a good night out and so the curry nights would be perfect.” Leapy and Laura looked around for a venue and Aroma Restaurant in El Toro was the ideal choice. Manager Mark Scott agreed to close the restaurant kitchen for the evening and let Leapy do his thing. “We have built up a large loyal clientele at Aroma in the past 18 months and have a reputation as a great live music venue so this seems to be ideal,” said Mark. The first resurrected ‘Flying Curry Night’ will be next Saturday September 29. There will be three different curries on offer with an ‘all-you-can-eat buffet’, live music from Leapy himself and cabaret from American entertainer, George Pena. 2001 closures hit franchises EXACTLY 2,001 franchise businesses closed in Spain in the first six months of this year. As a result there was a loss of 16,776 jobs. Worst affected were retail outlets and the services sector, with beauty and travel particularly hardhit, revealed franchise consultants Tormo & Asociados. Food outlets from icecream parlours to pubs plus Italian restaurants fared better among franchises than others, according to the latest report. By the end of June this year there were 1,078 franchises in Spain, one fewer than at the end of 2011. If Tormo & Asociados’ calculations
prove correct, 1,100 franchise brands will be operating by the end of 2012, with a total of 64,800 premises. “Viewed within the general economic situation, franchises present a more positive environment than other sectors,” Eduardo Tormo was reported as saying. There was a current tendency towards ‘low cost’ products with reduced prices to tempt consumers, Tormo said, but quality would assume an important role in the future of franchises, he predicted. Calling for specific regulations to guarantee quality, he warned that ‘unreliable’ firms are entering the franchise scene.

Driving to clear understanding of laws over licences from UK

IN YOUR article on changing from English to Spanish driving licences, you stated as long as drivers have an address in the UK from which to renew the licence, then driving in Spain on the British European Licence is permissable once the medical exam required by Spanish law had been taken. Giving an English address is not only not necessary, it is illegal for people resident elsewhere, including Spain. I am sorry that my response did not make this clear. If you renew your British licence while residing in Spain, thus deceiving the UK authorities, you are in violation of European Union directives. Second, if you hold a valid UK or other EU licence and you take the medical exam, you can lawfully drive as a resident on Spanish roads. Tell your people at the Medical Centre and the Guardia Civil at Alicante to note Article 15.4 of the “Reglamento General de Conductores” which was enacted by “Real Decreto 818/2009 del 8 de Mayo”. www.euroweeklynews.com IN July, the President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, promised to do “whatever it takes” to save the Euro. On 6th September he took action, announcing a new programme which could see the central bank spending billions of Euros to support troubled Eurozone countries. It was seen as the biggest step so far to protect the single currency, and sent a strong message to markets that the Euro is here to stay. At its governing council meeting, the European Central Bank (ECB) agreed to launch a new, open-ended and potentially unlimited bond buying programme. Named Outright Monetary Transactions (OMTs), the Bank will be able to openly buy sovereign bonds in the secondary markets. This ECB intervention should reduce the cost of borrowing for countries like Spain, Italy and Portugal. Sig. Draghi explained that this would address the severe distortions in the government bond markets, which originate from investors’ “unfounded fears” about the survival of the single currency. “The Euro is irreversible,” he added. The decisive move was welcomed by most European leaders and the markets. It has been described by various analysts as a “game changer”. Speaking to the Financial Times, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-

There are a number of new elements compared to previous interventions. Bond-buying will be restricted to short-term debt of up to three years. The ECB will forego its status as senior creditor, so the Bank will take equal ranking with other creditors in the event of default. The bond buying will be “sterilised” to counter inflationary risk. The ECB will take an equivalent amount in deposits from banks to avoid flooding the Eurozone with new cash. Collateral standards have been lowered, making it easier for banks to borrow capital. There are very strict terms attached to receiving this assistance. Strict terms The ECB will only help countries which agree to implement strict policy conditions. They will have to request official help from the appropriate EU stability mechanism – to apply for a direct bailout – and put strong plans in place to get their

finances back on track. Portugal and Ireland are already receiving bailouts, but when it comes to Spain and Italy the ball is now in their court. Applying for a bailout would likely mean increasing austerity measures such as spending cuts and tax rises. Response Much of the response was positive. Jim O’Neill, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, said that the ECB is “telling us the markets should not keep worrying about the risk of a Euro breakup and we will do things to enforce that reality.” Political leaders and central bankers have “fully signed up to some kind of medium-term United States of Europe”, he observed. Andrew Cox, G10 strategist at CitiFX in New York, said the details “add to the credibility of the safety net taking shape in the Eurozone and should support demand for
Eurozone assets”. There are, however, concerns that this programme could impose more austerity on countries which really need to grow their economies, and that the underlying causes still need to be addressed. The ECB is fully aware its action alone cannot fix the Eurozone. The bank made explicit political demands on Eurozone government leaders, saying that they “need to push ahead with great determination with fiscal consolidation, structural reforms to enhance competitiveness and European institution-building.” There needs to be more integration between countries, even if this means pooling sovereignty and surrendering national powers in fiscal and budgetary policy. Nonetheless, the ECB’s bond buying programme does buy the troubled countries more time to right their fiscal imbalances and increase economic competitiveness and productivity. There is still a way to go before the Euro crisis is behind us, but this is a positive step forward. Implications While British expatriates living in the Eurozone may be encouraged by the assertion that the Euro is here to stay, it is of limited value. The continuing macroeconomic background of financial pressures besetting
Eurozone governments have led to them recognising the need to raise tax revenues. This aspect is likely to continue and with capital and wealth taxes increasingly coming into focus, this puts property owning expatriates firmly in the firing line. WITH regard to UK Minister of Works and Pensions, Ian Duncan Smith’s plan to introduce a temperature test for the Winter Fuel allowance, I have written to him expressing my views and disgust. I will not accept his reasons for excluding expat pensioners and will take it to the relevant Ombudsman and the European Court of Human Rights if necessary. He intends to challenge the ruling by the European Court of Justice that expats should be entitled to receive the fuel allowance. If he is not convinced that expats in Spain should get the heating allowance, I have suggested he consider a Summer Cooling Allowance to assist our increased power bills due to running air conditioning. Why should people who have contributed to the UK economy all their lives be denied this benefit while thousands of immigrants to Britain who have contributed nothing receive a wide variety of benefits? UK State Pension is already low. In other EU countries it is paid to allow pensioners lifestyles similar to before they retired, but UK pension keeps them just above starvation. Lesson to note SAYING that the ‘administration is doing everything possible to destroy the state education system’, as the group protesting outside an Alicante City school said (Costa Blanca North, Issue 1419) is a bit harsh. The administration is in a very difficult economic situation and is trying to see where it can make cuts. I think they are looking in the wrong areas; however I doubt they are intentionally going out to destroy the education or health system.

An A1 service I AGREE with the report by Nick Snelling (Issue 1419) that there is a BIG misconception about healthcare here in Spain. I have lived here since 1968 and have been in hospital many times with various serious health problems including cancer four times. Throughout the healthcare I have received in the Hospital Marina Baixa and in other various hospitals was second to none. One thing I don’t agree with is that we should expect the Spanish doctors to speak English. Many do and if not there are interpreters, but why should we expect doctors to speak English in Spain? Grisly images IT was interesting to read how the grisly cigarette packet images are the least effective in getting people to stop smoking (Issue 1419). I have always said that those already hooked will either turn the packet over so they do not see it or put the cigarettes in a nice case. Seeing the light I AM sure Rick Polanski is sincere about his recent experience to a Buddhist retreat (Almeria Issue 1418). However, as a local Christian pastor I feel the need to respond to his recommending of Buddhism for those who “feel short changed on what they have been offered as spiritual compensation”. All religions apart from Christianity focus on what man must do to achieve a level of spirituality and so called enlightenment. This ultimately is based on people striving to satisfy their own needs, which fails to provide the inner peace they look for. This was the same scenario Jesus faced with those who strived under the legalistic system of Judaism. In contrast Jesus offers a peace that passes all

Faulty planning IN response to Brian Mullin’s letter (Issue 1419) regarding police putting a stop to musical activities following a complaint. I think that if someone is trying to get some sleep because of work the next day, they are entitled to make a complaint if it is after midnight. However, I agree that entertainment is essential for a town’s benefit and tourism. It all boils down to poor town planning. Residential areas and night spots should not be mixed. Bad bar talk MY wife and I with our young daughter went to an Englishowned bar in Turre, but left after five minutes. This was because the language coming from three men – one possibly the owner – was quite atrocious. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT views, their attitudes toward women, and their warped sense of justice, their barbarous punishments and their complete disregard for human life. We need to withdraw all our troops. Stop monetary aid and close our embassies.
ATTITUDE TO WOMEN: They expect us all to admit they are in the right. Let ‘em all get on with it. When they’ve killed most of their own citizens and reduced all their countries to rubble, we’ll think about doing our deals with whatever rises from the ashes. In the meantime we have to re-negotiate the price of oil with the few Mid East countries that still are our allies. Liaise with the Americans and do a great deal more drilling in Alaska and the North Sea. Let em stick their oil and their problems where the sun don’t shine.
If Iran truly appears to want to annihilate Israel we must deal with them accordingly and tell China and Russia to mind their own business (what they gonna do, nuke us?). If you want proof of how far we are down the road to appeasement, you only have to see the treatment of the author of this aforementioned film which apparently mocks Mohamed. With hands cuffed behind his back, large sunglasses, his head swathed in towels and
roughly bundled into the back of a police car, he appeared like a captured serial killer or highly dangerous rapist. The majority of its countries will never share our values, sense of decency, or indeed give any support to civilized western societies. When will our leaders realise the Mid East doesn’t want us as allies. They don’t want to join us in a unified quest for peace and development - it frightens them. They’re not ready. T is no secret that institutions develop their own language in the interests of time and confidentiality. Recently, a US newspaper published some of the secret codes used in American restaurants. What about the UK’s? I hear you ask. Well, ‘HAF’ means ‘had a few’ while ‘PIA’ is code for ‘pain in the **** ’. Now, we all know that waiters and restaurant staff use various terms to describe their patrons, mostly derogatory but occasionally complimentary. But am I a PIA because I’d like my white wine chilled rather than at room temperature? Or because my friends and I would like our starters at the same time, if at all possible, so we can eat together? Or because I think a rare steak ought to contain at least some trace of redness inside? Similarly, am I a PIA for asking to sit at THAT table, not THIS one in a virtually empty restaurant, and insisting that an expensive bottle of wine be opened in front of me? I’m paying, after all, and that’s my choice as a customer. Well, if I have to be labelled a PIA for asking the waiter to indicate which desserts have nuts (to which a family

So deep in the reptilian part of our brain lives a little creature that from time to time fiddles with the fight or flight instinct and keeps us from harm. Fear of the dark, of strangers, of hissing sounds in the undergrowth and of elasticated waistbands has kept many a woman safe and sane. Most grown women can immediately spot the creep or psycho (except my friend Maggie who would invite them in to her flat oblivious to the flickering tongue and sound of hissing) often simply due to a ‘feeling’ precipitated by a judder of disgust. Cats are alleged to possess excellent instincts, quick reflexes and an agility that completely confounds all natural laws. Except that is for my own cat, Ché, who possesses no instincts whatsoever. Last week Ché fell off my balcony and I haven’t been able to erase the image of his wide eyed, shocked face as he plummeted to what we both thought was his doom. Luckily he was unharmed if a little splayed, but unlike humans cats do not suffer from embarrassment and so he was able to shake off the shock and resume his day to day pleasures which mostly consist of attacking my son’s feet and eating crickets. Darwin wrote: “...all cats are fundamentally the same and remain so through time.” Well he never met Ché did he?

Virus outbreak in USA THE mosquito-borne West Nile virus is causing concern in the USA as cases of the disease hit an all time high. So far this year, 2,636 cases have been reported to federal health officials, up from 1,993 reported just a week before – an increase of a third in seven days. 118 people have now died from the disease, compared with 87 reported one week according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention as it released its weekly data on the outbreak. About 40 per cent of all cases in humans are in Texas.

Give your hair a treat with a home made hair mask By Beth Underhill A HAIR MASK is a common treatment in spas around the world, used not only on sun scorched hair but on colour treated hair and hair that is constantly being damaged due to heated appliances. Frizzy hair too can be a problem in the hot humid weather but why pay expensive prices for keeping your tresses looking good. Pamper yourself with some of the following homemade remedies. The process of making your own hair mask is fairly simple, although you’ll probably want to save the treatment for a time when you plan to spend the entire evening at home, no better reason for having a little ‘get together’ with the girlies. Some of the ingredients used in do-it-yourself hair masks contain olive oil which can have a distinctive smell and is hard to remove all excess traces. In some cases applying a mild shampoo to the hair before applying water will help to remove excess oil and any unwanted odours. Regardless of what type of hair mask you choose to create, most masks are only intended to be used once or twice per month. They are intended to help repair your hair, not simply maintain your style. Using a hair mask too often may create additional problems, such as excess oiliness from overuse of a moisturising mask. Fast Track Mask For a dry scalp and hair, warm up some extra virgin olive oil over a pot

Put ½ of a banana, ¼ of cantaloupe, ¼ of avocado, one tablespoon of yogurt and one tablespoon of wheat germ oil in a blender. Massage the mixture into the scalp, cover and leave for at least 15 minutes. Egg-centric hair mask For very dry hair, mix together two whole eggs with four tablespoons of olive oil. Apply the mixture mid lengths and ends and then to the root area, cover with a
plastic wrap. Wait for 10 – 15 minutes and shampoo as usual. Banana banquet For damaged hair, combine a very ripe banana with a few drops of almond oil. Apply throughout the hair, cover and leave for approximately 15 minutes. Rinse with soda water and shampoo as normal. Curly Sue Mix a tablespoon of honey with one litre of clean water and rinse the hair after using your normal shampoo to keep frizziness under control.
Eye test could help detect Alzheimer's NEW research suggests a simple eye test may be able to detect the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have found a link and common elements between cataracts and Alzheimer’s after studying brain scans for 10 years after initial eye exam-inations. Professor Lindsay Farrer, from the
research team at the University School of Medicine in Boston (USA) says the findings may give hope to being able to give a diagnosis of the early stages of Alzheimer’s and could lead to new treatments. The news comes during Alzheimer’s Month ahead of World Alzheimer’s Day on Friday September 21.

Oral spray claims to kill germs AN oral spray that claims to ‘kill 99.9 per cent of infectious airbourne germs’ has been created. The Halo Oral Antiseptic protects from any germs breathed in for six hours, its manufacturer claims. “Respiratory tract disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world, yet there has been limited progress in the prevention of respiratory virus infections,” said lead study author Dr Frank Esper from the University Hospitals Case Medical Centre in Cleveland, Ohio (US). “Halo is unique in that it offers protection from airbourne germs such as influenza and rhinovirus.”
Health risk in too long daily working hours WORKING more than eight hours a day can lead to a greater chance of developing heart disease. A study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, shows that working longer hours can lead to a combination of stress, raised blood pressure and unhealthy diets, causing serious health problems to workers. Research was carried out over the last 50 years and concluded that spending too long in the office resulted in a 40 to 80 per cent increase in developing heart disease compared to an eight hour work day. Our aspirations may range from a particularly sleek canoe or something more sumptuous to accommodate the family, Ferrari and ego, too. The problem is; what if the boat in the berth next door is bigger than yours? There is little more upsetting than shelving out enough euros to bail out a Spanish bank, only to find that your 40metre buoyant extravaganza looks diminutive next to Franz’ super yacht. Because when it comes to boats, I am reliably told, size does matter. And since money, despite popular belief, doesn’t grow on trees (albeit being made of pulp, so it kind of does) there is the bitter pill of upkeep, mooring, petrol and taxes to keep you afloat. Although taxes are taboo in this column, I shall make an exception since the controversial matriculation tax has left many charters high and dry - or more to the point - en route to other countries, where they are welcome with open arms. Seems counter-intuitive as a way of increasing revenue in the long run, but then I am not a politician.

The boat conundrum: to buy or not to buy, but the problem is, what if the boat in the berth next door is bigger than yours? So, can you actually afford the lovely little Sunseeker that has caught your nautical eye? A ‘bargain’ second hand, 12-year old, 14-metre, will set you back some 170,000 euros, add a grand for the day skipper course, assuming you actually want to take it out of the port, and about 350,000 euros for a suitable mooring in, say Puerto Banus. Plus roughly 10 per cent annual upkeep costs and possible 12 per cent matriculation. You do the math, as my head is spinning. And I don’t need to tell you what the
costs are for Franz’ shiny new super yacht - if you need to ask, you can’t afford it. If you are still tempted,
consider first the comments of bonafide boat owners: “The happiest days in my life was when we bought it… and the day we

Still, there are many reasons why you should take the proverbial plunge: Tell the children that it’s a ski holiday (Spend the Kids’ Inheritance) you earned it, so you keep it. Secondly, it is a highly altruistic way of supporting the Spanish economy and the faltering yachting industry - it has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that you like to hang out on deck, knocking back the cava in a suitably swish port. And last but far from least, you are merely preparing for a watery apocalypse once the icebergs melt, by investing in your own Ark. Then who will be laughing? ITH the autumn comes the need to change the family wardrobe around. We put away the summer stuff and fetch out the winter. There is a lag in the process of course, when you’ve got both out as you can’t tell from one day to the next if you are going to be most comfortable in a t-shirt or long sleeves, shorts or trousers. This makes my recent pseudo-housewife achievement even more remarkable: I managed to reach ‘Pant Zero’. Pant Zero is when every single item of clothing, including underwear is clean and put away in a cupboard. There isn’t anything on the line, in the ironing pile, in the washer going smelly, or in the basket waiting for any parts of the aforementioned to happen to it. To be honest, the ironing pile doesn’t normally exist in our house anyway – when we are visited by a female relative of a certain age it seems as if they have gone ironing mad. If they intercept and get their hands on the pile of dry, clean washing before it is sorted and folded and put away they seem to delight in ironing stuff that frankly in our opinion doesn’t need it: socks for example, SOCKS. Why? Answers please to the address below.. So I can’t tell you how accomplished and organised reaching knicker nirvana made me feel. If only I could apply this level of pristine military precision to every area of my life.

Perhaps because my family’s pants are now clean and put away we will arrive everywhere on time, our taxes will be paid, we will put out the correct recycling on the correct night, we will remember to send birthday cards a week before the event, and many other
admirable and ‘Superwoman’ like characteristics will suddenly become easy and natural to us. I did meet someone with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and anxiety recently, this person had to clean their hands very frequently, and carried around with them a little bottle of hand sanitiser and wet wipes to do just that job.
What a good idea thought I. Reflecting on this I realise that I might be going a little doolally, it is just as okay to go to a sink and wash your hands I told myself. Perhaps when the world gets even more out of control we will all start carrying around little bottles of Dettol, “Yes, Spain is in terrible debt, we can’t afford to eat but at least my family’s knickers are folded and my hands are clean”. It could happen. On the other hand (you see what I did there?) apparently chaos is part of being creative. Or I could try to reach Pant Zero minus One or is that perhaps a step too far? This would be when you have everything clean and put away and you aren’t wearing any pants at all because even they are in the drawer lining up with their fellows. EADERS of our columns will know that we take a holistic approach to the development of our garden and delight in the growing and eating our own artisan produce. However, we are not only interested in eating gastronomically, but also healthily. Over the years we have made a note of what a wide range of health experts say about the impact on our aging of what we eat and drink. Glancing through our summary it’s very obvious the only way one is going to eat the best anti-aging foods on a regular basis is by growing your own since one of the provisos is that the fruit and vegetables should be eaten fresh and when at their best. Fresh described as within a day of harvest to ensure that the beneficial anti-aging agents are at their maximum in what you eat and at their best being when most flavoursome and digestible especially in the case of fruit and fruit vegetables. There is no comparison between going out into the garden and eating a fully ripe juicy peach, apricot or pear directly off the tree compared to a fruit picked long before ripe in order that it can withstand the battering

Likewise young peas and broad beans eaten within an hour are very different from those left on the plant until they are of maximum size to increase the harvests and income of the grower. Last year we published the supplement to our other books titled ‘Living Well from Our Mediterranean Garden’. In it we highlight the foods from the garden we consider to be healthiest. Garlic is easy to grow and could well be the healthiest vegetable to

You can plant up garlic between October and December and harvest it for use in salads and omelettes. Dark green leaf vegetables such as broccoli, acelga, spinach, red lettuces and rocket are also said to be especially good for us. Unfortunately one cannot grow brazil nuts on the costas – as far as we know – but almonds and walnuts contain essential oils plus, of
course, olives which can be cold pressed to produce your own virgin olive oil if you have sufficient trees and kilos of olives. Other easy to grow healthy vegetables include carrots, fennel, parsley, basil, beetroot and onions . And when weeding the garden, dandelion and wild chicory leaves are excellent vegetables in their own right . The books mentioned above as well as ‘Your Garden in Spain’ are full of useful tips.

In front of a packed house, it was unveiled and its capabilities demonstrated by driving through a water pool that was almost a metre deep and climbing a rocky causeway before coming to a stop in front of White Lodge, a formal royal residence and home to the Royal Ballet School.
