EXPATRIATES and residents in Marbella have rallied to help raise money for a local Spanish girl who remains in hospital after losing all four limbs to septicaemia last summer.

Expatriates have joined with the family of Sarah Almagro Vallejo, 18, from Marbella, since she was taken to Costa del Sol Hospital on the night of July 23. She was found to have contracted septicaemia, a bacterial blood infection which almost took her life. A fundraising drive has since been set up for Sarah, with a charity also set to be founded in her name to help other septicaemia patients and to support their families.

down with what felt like a fever and began vomiting.

“My mum took me to a

health centre at midnight and the doctors there gave me something to settle my

stomach. The following day I felt worse so I was taken to the emergency

ward at Marbella Hospital,” Sarah said.

“The last thing I remember was screaming in agony before being put in a room,” she added.

Sarah said blood tests showed she had contracted septicaemia from a bug which caused several of her organs to collapse.

“I went into shock and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit in Marbella Hospital,” she said.

Sarah spent 10 days in a coma and she has since undergone several operations, including amputations and dialysis treatment. Her family said she

was still in the early stages of what they have termed her ‘reconstruction.’

“Sarah has been a natural athlete ever since childhood. She did football, tennis, basketball, swimming, running, judo, crossfit and surfing, the latter on a regular basis.

“She was all set to start her first year in university studying law. Her studies, along with sports, are two things she is not willing to give up on,” Sarah’s family said.

Brit tourism bid OFFICIALS from the Costa del Sol’s tourism board are set to travel to London to pitch the region’s offering at an industry fair after British holidaymaker numbers dropped this year.

Board representatives are due to be at the World Travel Market exhibition, which starts next Monday.

The officials have an exhibit space of 195 square metres which features seven counters, three digital screens and two photo calls, themed on the Caminito del Rey golf course.

It comes as the number of British travellers arriving at Malaga Airport fell by 5.5 per cent during the first nine months of this year, according to industry data.

Elias Bendodo, head of the tourism board, said the exhibit would give the destination’s profile a boost at a time when it was needed.

“Our exhibit will include a business and professional stand for the first time. We are making a bid for business because we are convinced of the strategic important of this market,” Bendodo said.

The official added that around 100 business people will travel to London as part of the Costa del Sol delegation.

Jose Carlos Escribano, president of the Costa del Sol Tourism Forum, said it was time for the region’s holiday industry to show that it remained a leading destination.

Fake crime arrests

NATIONAL POLICE officers in Marbella arrested a total of eight suspects in connection with the fraudulent reporting of crimes from July to September this year.

Officers said all the arrested were in connection with alleged insurance fraud. Police claim the detainees either reported crimes that were later found not to have happened, or embellished incidents.

One such case allegedly involved someone reporting that their mobile phone had been stolen, when actually it had fallen while the suspect rode their motorcycle.

The statistics come as the National Police launched its VeriPol system this week. The software, which is now being used by forces across Spain, vets crime reports to determine their accuracy.

Aid for baby unit T

HE Los Boliches Knit ‘n’ Natter group made their autumn donation of 1,200 hand knitted and crochet baby items to the Premature Baby Unit at Materno Hospital in Malaga last week.

Ladies from the associated group of Alhaurin also attended the hand over, along with staff from the unit.

The selection of handmade hats, jackets, baby sets and blankets, will be used by the staff at the hospital to help families in need, in particular those with children born prematurely for whom buying clothes can be difficult.

Staff from the hospital all belong to a non-profit organisation called

Canastillas sin Fronteres, which was formed to provide a number of baby items for families that are either not prepared for a premature baby, or for those who need extra help to provide for a tiny new born.

Much of the yarn which is used to create the baby clothes is purchased from donations made by the La Cala Lions, which has been supporting the knitting group through fundraising.

Knit ‘n’ Natter welcomes new members, and the ladies are happy to provide patterns and needles.

The group meets every Monday and Wednesday, from 11am to 1pm, at Gelato & Mare Ice Cream Restaurant on the left of Plaza San Rafel, in Los Boliches.

Sarah’s family said they were extremely grateful to the staff at Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital. Everything is expected to go well for her because of the love and support she enjoys from her family and friends.

Centenary Armistice Day Sunday November 11, 2018 REMEMBRANCE Sunday falls on November 11 this year, exactly 100 years to the day since the Allies signed the Armistice with Germany and France at the ‘11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month’ to end the First World War. The Royal British Legion has announced that one in six paper poppies will feature a gold leaf with ‘1918-2018’ printed on it to mark the occasion.

This year’s Poppy Appeal is the biggest ever, and the Legion hopes to raise £50 million (€56 million) for service men and women, veterans and their families.

The first Poppy Appeal was held in 1921, which was the founding year of The Royal British Legion.

Each year, the British community in Spain mark ‘Remembrancetide’ in many ways, often with a church service.

In Fuengirola, the Salon Varietes Theatre will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony as normal, those planning to attend are encouraged to arrive by 10.15am.

There will be a laying of wreaths, a parade of standard bearers, and The International Music Society (TIMS), will be performing. The popular Costa del Sol choir is in its 30th year and will perform several hymns.

In Marbella, The La Sala Group, Club La Costa World Resorts and Hotels, and the Classic Car Club of Andalucia (CCCA) will hold an event with a rolling breakfast at La Sala, Banus, starting at 10.30am.

Worker statistics

A TOTAL of 5,117 workers were registered as self-employed in Torremolinos as of last September, the highest amount on record according to data from Spain’s Employment Ministry.

There were 191 more self-employed workers in Torremolinos than at the same time in 2017, an increase of almost 4 per cent.

Torremolinos’ mayor Jose Ortiz said

the figures showed the town was committed to entrepreneurship.

“This is the reason we launched the Department of Entrepreneurship, which led to the creation of the Business Development Support Centre.

“We have provided training and advice to residents who want to create their own company or who are committed to self-employment,” Ortiz said.

Sheltered life TORREMOLINOS Council has kept the popular Cañada del Lobo shelter closed since March 2017, much to the disappointment of tourists and residents alike.

The outbuilding, located in the heart of the Sierra de Torremolinos, was shut due to the poor state of its electrical infrastructure.

Although access to the Cañada (which enjoys one of the best views out on to the Costa del Sol from the Sierra de Torremolinos) is allowed, overnight stays there are not possible.

The council insists that it is still working on technical and budget specifications, but opposition parties claim there is no excuse for such a long delay.

It states that the interior was in a dangerous state, with electric cables getting tangled with water pipes, and that all security safeguards must be met before it can be reopened.

The environment department of the council is in talks with Endesa to supply the electricity.

N aquatic society based in Marbella has said it is ‘very happy’ with the results of a cleanup effort in a local marina.

The city’s Official Centre for Underwater Research (COIS) worked to fish rubbish out of the waters by the Virgen del Carmen marina last Saturday.

The cleanup drive was undertaken alongside workers from Marbella Council, with around 50 people taking part according to COIS. Salvador Galdeano, head of COIS, said less waste had been removed this time than in previous years.

They numbered about 20 and 30 respectively and worked from 10am to 1pm.

Prizes were handed out to those who collected the most rubbish.

Sports tourism

Health centre WORKERS began extensions to a health centre in San Pedro Alcantara last Monday, to triple its size.

The works undertaken by the Añil engineering firm, have a budget of €4.6 million and are set to be completed in early 2020, according to San Pedro Council.

Ana Isabel Gonzalez, the J u n t a d e A n d a l u c i a ’s health spokesperson in Malaga Province, said the

work would improve facilities for professionals and patients.

The Andalucia Health Service (SAS) facility will cover a total area of 3,441 square metres when finished. There will be 24 consultation spaces and four for child doctor appointments.

The centre will have facilities to treat mental health patients, physiotherapy, and a dental room.

Jobs plan MARBELLA Council has unveiled a programme to help get the long-term unemployed, over 45’s back into work.

Council officials said the scheme would run for a period of six months and would be offered to 60 workers in the city.

They are set to be offered professional positions with salaries ranging from €1,300 to €1,600 a month. Felix

Romero, the council’s citizenship spokesperson, said it would help to boost other council employment programmes.

A total of 200 people have benefitted from such plans with €2.3 million spent over the past year, Romero added.

The latest jobs scheme is part-financed by the Junta de Andalucia and the European Union (EU). It has a budget of €463,000.

OLIDAYS aimed at sporty travellers netted around €6 million for the town’s economy so far this year, according to the town’s council.

A total of 234 foreign sports teams travelled to Torremolinos and accounted for around 40,000 overnight stays in the town’s hotels.

The figures were unveiled at a presentation attended by Mayor Jose Ortiz and the Junta de Andalucia’s tourism and sports spokesperson Monsalud Bautista last Monday.

Ortiz said sports tourism provided the town with sustainable economy growth, and raised the profile of Torremolinos’ premium holiday offering.

“Professional athletes have become elite tourists and one of the latest trends in the sector is high performance

“This is a trend that could help fight seasonality in the tourism industry as professional athletes train in the autumn and winter,” Ortiz said.

Bautista said Torremolinos had grasped the ‘great importance’ of sports tourism.

“It gives a quality mark for services that are offered,” the Junta spokesperson said.

Sports tourism has seen its share of the tourism market in Torremolinos and elsewhere on the Costa del Sol, increase in recent years.

It has also helped to keep hotels open during spring and autumn, quieter times of the year for the tourism industry.

Sports tourism has also helped to reduce the rate of hotel closure by 20 per cent across the Hotel Sun House Costa del Sol chain, according to its manager Jorge Saez.

and Juan Ramon Hern a n d e z , c a lle d for ‘awareness and action on the contamination that is causing the growing production of plastics one-time use’.

To combat the damage to the environment, marine fauna and humans, the institution agrees unanimously to reduce the

use of this type of packaging opting for com postable or biodegradable alternatives, both in public buildings and ‘in the acts convened in their name.’

As such, Benalmadena has assumed a commitment to the future in line with the European Parliament.

Hotel closure call H

OTELIERS on the Costa del Sol have chosen to close fewer establishments this winter in an effort to stop the seasonal lull in the industry.

There is set to be around 22,000 less vacancies in the region due to hotel closures this winter, compared to 25,000 last year according to industry figures.

Rates have also been slashed during the low season, according to the Costa del Sol Hoteliers Association (AEHCOS).

AEHCOS said 46 of its member establishments would remain open during the winter. Five are set to close for renovation works worth a total of €27.1 million, the association added.

Luis Callejon Suñe, the head of AEHCOS, said authorities should urge other businesses to stay opened during the winter to boost the local and regional economy.

“When a hotel stops operating for the season, it has an impact on the shops, restaurants and bars which are located in the vicinity that see their business depleted and sometimes they shut down, thereby reducing jobs,” Callejon Suñe said.

The head of AEHCOS added the

tourism industry should be looking to make the Costa del Sol a destination for the whole year.

“We need to make it so the coast can offer three springs and one summer. Beaches should be maintained and services should be available throughout the year,” Callejon Suñe said.

“I do not understand why coastal councils remove hammocks and parasols from the beach during the winter.

“The temperatures in the sea are similar to those in the waters of their home countries in the middle of the summer,” the head of AEHCOS added.

The call comes as Aena, Spain’s airport authority, said 152 out of the 186 European routes in and out of Malaga airport would remain operational this winter.

Airlines have also increased the number of seats on airlines flying to and from Britain by 14.6 per cent.

Routes to and from Sweden, Germany and Ireland are also set for a boost of 39.4 per cent, 24.7 per cent and 9.8 per cent respectively.

Shop sessions STORE owners gathered in Torremolinos for council-organised customer service sessions last Tuesday.

The meeting saw staff from between 25 and 30 shops attend. Topics including boosting customer experience and making businesses sustainable were covered, amongst others, Torremolinos Council said in a statement.

Cesar Carrasco, the council’s entrepreneurship spokesperson, said: “The council is giving entrepreneurs the tools to help them do business.

“The objective of this course is that they can improve the relationship with their customers and become exceptional in doing so. In a globalised and competitive market it is fundamental to give the best treatment to the client,” Carrasco said.

Dolores Martinez, of the Junta de Andalucia’s entrepreneurship body, said the sessions were put on to show businesspeople how to differentiate and grow.

I WAS wandering along the aisles of one of the biggest Chinese shops in Benidorm recently, looking for some halogen light bulbs when my eyes alighted on a product I haven’t seen in about three decades: Tipp-Ex. It wasn’t actually labelled TippEx, but it was a generic product meant to white out errors made when typing. But who on earth uses typewriters these days?

Seeing the tiny bottle of white gunk projected me 20 years back in time when a friend asked me where he could buy a typewriter to replace the one he’d been using since Moses was knee high to a cricket. It was well and truly knackered, and the ribbon should have been replaced around 1950.

I said to Bill, who was in his 80s, that he’d need to scour secondhand outlets or charity shops because no-one, as far as I knew, sold new ones. His crestfallen look prompted me to do a search on his behalf, and finally I found one an Olivetti weighing in at about 22

Who uses typewriters these days?

Bill was overjoyed, particularly as it came with a carton of ribbons which had passed their sell-by date 30 years prior.

I had a little play with it before loading it up in my Mini Cooper S, and wondered how the hell I’d

ever managed to use typewriters when working as a young journalist. But I did, and despite frequently jamming up the keys, still managed to bash out copy in time for deadlines.

Some colleagues on The Star newspaper in Johannesburg were less patient than I. One, in particular, got so annoyed with his ma-

chine that he lifted it off his desk and threw it out of a third-floor window - a window he hadn’t bothered to open first.

A senior editor was getting out of his car, when the typewriter crashed to the ground a few feet from where he was standing, and he was showered in glass. He was lucky not to have been

brained by the thing.

On another occasion - this time in London - I found myself sharing an office with a volatile female writer who scared the life out of everyone whenever she picked a fight with her typewriter. She would shriek curses at it, throw paper around, and run around the office like a Tasmanian Devil with its tail on fire.

After she threw her machine on the floor in a rage, I went to the boss and demanded another office. When my request was denied I promptly quit, and soon found a new job where I had an office to myself, and a computer.

Thinking back now on other 20th century objects that I won’t miss, I decided that music cassette tapes would top my list.

I loathed these because they always would snarl up in players. I never had the patience to sort them out, and they’d go straight into the bin, or out of my car’s window.

Remember the days when you would see miles of brown tape festooned on trees and bushes alongside highways? Well I was responsible for some of that litter.

And, yes, I do feel deeply ashamed for having disposed of the tapes in such an irresponsible manner.

Mother and son die after building jump A 37-YEAR-OLD woman has thrown herself from the sixth floor of a building in Murcia along with her four-year-old son.

The woman was declared dead at the scene, while the young boy died later at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital where he arrived in a critical condition.

The alarm was raised at 6am in the morning when a neighbour called the 112 emergency number after hearing a loud bang on the street outside of her home in Calle Huerto Manu. When she looked outside, she

It is a uniform problem

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com WHY is it, that seemingly normal people turn into zombies as soon as they slip into a uniform?

There are exceptions, and fondly recalled are the ships officers I served under. These real men were of an officer class whose rank never went to their heads, nor did they ever abuse their authority.

Sadly, there is the self-delusional authority of many in uniform who seem attracted to the serge for no other reason than their tunic gives them power over others.

A short chat reveals many to be semi-literate. Those tasked with people management tend towards insolence and are often found in UK airport staff.

We all know receptionists who treat their health practice’s clients with disdain. Yet, the professionals who employ them are well-educated, courteous and often humble.

RESPECT: Ship officers did not abuse their authority.

A heart-wrenching story, was of 21-year old Katie Allen who took her own life in her prison cell after she was forced to parade naked in front of prison guards.

The devastated parents of Katie, believe their 21-year-old daughter was targeted for strip

searches because of her submissive nature, and bullied and terrorised by other inmates.

After consuming four glasses of cider the young driver had struck a 15-year-old teenager, who went on to make a full recovery.

Katie was jailed despite the in-

jured youth’s family begging she be spared a custodial term.

Katie was handed a 16-month death sentence in February.

Her mum Linda told the Daily Record that Katie was “stripsearched after almost every visit” and lost 80 per cent of her hair

due to stress. She said: “The searches were supposed to be random or intelligence-led but it always seemed to be her.

“She was an easy target. There was an incident when they were training guards and they chose Katie to be strip-searched. She was absolutely distraught after that because she was made to stand naked while they had a conversation.”

The dreadful allegations came after it emerged Katie was bullied relentlessly by fellow inmates before her suicide.

Michael’s dad Gordon said: “Katie deeply regretted what had happened, and came across as genuine, sincere and repentant.

Neither Michael, I, nor my wife Margaret wanted a custodial sentence for Katie.

“Katie had written to us again from prison to apologise for a second time, and restated that she didn’t know she had hit Michael. The whole thing has been a tragedy for her family.”

The suicide rate in Britain’s prisons is 10 times that of the general population.

Clearly, we have a uniform culture of immorality and bullying. In my opinion, police officials and prison guards are not, and never will be officers as we servicemen see the officer class.

Adverbs of manner

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

THIS week we are going to look at how to say ‘ly’ in Spanish, as in happy - happily, quiet - quietly, fortunate fortunately and so on.

When we add ‘ly’ to words, we are, in grammatical terms, changing adjectives to adverbs.

There are all kinds of adverbs in English and Spanish with lots of different uses, but we are going to stick to one kind, often called ‘adverbs of manner’.

In other words, they describe ‘how’ things are done. To put it another way, they describe verbs or actions, unlike adjectives, which describe things, or nouns.

As ever, we’d better make this clear with a nice simple example.

Let’s say: ‘the happy girl’. ‘Girl’ is a noun, referring to a person, and ‘happy’ is an adjective describing the girl. Now we’ll say ‘the girl sang happily’.

We have added a ‘ly’ ending to the adjective ‘happy’ to form ‘happily’, and in so doing we are now describing the manner in which something was done, or you could say we are describing the

verb ‘sang’. How did she sing? She sang happily, using an adverb of manner.

In the vast majority of cases in Spanish, this ‘ly’ ending is expressed with ‘mente’.

Let’s take our example. Happy is ‘feliz’ and happily is ‘felizmente’. So our two sentences in Spanish are ‘la niña feliz’ and ‘la niña cantó felizmente’.

There are one or two simple rules about how this ending fits on to different types of adjectives. If the adjective ends in ‘o’ in the masculine and therefore changes to ‘a’ in the feminine, which is true of a very large number of adjectives, the ‘mente’ ending tacks on

to the feminine form of the adjective. In other words, the ending becomes ‘amente’.

For example, ‘tranquilo’ meaning ‘calm’. ‘Mi padre es muy tranquilo’ (my father is very calm) and ‘trabaja tranquilamente’ (he works calmly).

Likewise ‘abierto’ meaning ‘open’. ‘Es un señor muy abierto’ (he is a very outgoing man). ‘Siempre habla de sus problemas abiertamente’ (he always talks about his problems openly).

Not all adjectives become adverbs automatically (notice in English we also have the ending ‘ally’. Automatic - automatically). In fact, there are many adjectives which describe appearance, or

have some other meaning, but cannot be changed to describe manner.

For example ‘guapo’ (handsome). In English we do have the word ‘handsomely’ but it has a different meaning.

We don’t usually say a person does anything ‘handsomely’ although we can talk about being ‘paid handsomely’.

In Spanish this certainly is NOT ‘guapamente’ which I’m quite sure does not exist! We could translate this with ‘generosamente’ (generously), which is what the word really means in this context.

So, what happens with adjectives that do not end in ‘o’ and ‘a’? Well, they just add the ‘mente’ ending as we saw before with ‘felizmente’.

This also applies if they end in a different vowel, for example ‘enorme’ (enormous) becomes ‘enormemente’ (enormously) keeping the ‘e’.

It is a subtle but common mistake amongst foreign speakers of Spanish to say incorrectly ‘enormAmente’ instead of the correct ‘enormEmente’.

Of course this only matters if the foreign speaker concerned pronounces his or her vowels clearly in the first place!

‘Bueno, pues nada. Agradezco vuestra atención enormemente’. ‘I appreciate your attention enormously’.

‘Food marketing’ fair

A

LEADING Basque chef is among the food and drinks figures set to appear at a food marketing event in Malaga City next February.

Andoni Luis Aduriz, owner of the Michelin star Mugaritz restaurant in Gipuzkoa, is due to arrive in Malaga City for the 2019 edition of the Gastromarketing event on February 4.

The fair is set to take place in the city’s Palace of Fairs and Congresses (FYCMA), the venue said.

FYCMA said Aduriz is one of the most influencial chefs on the food scene.

“He is committed to the evolution of cuisine food that is innovative. He is a versatile creator who seeks an experience that encompasses all the diners’ senses,” the venue said.

FYCMA said the event would feature demonstrations, tastings and presentations of food and on business and digital themes.

The 2019 edition is set to offer the broadest and most diverse show so far in the series, the organisers said.

There is set to be several different food and drink offerings with a spe-

cific area for restaurant products such as furniture and decoration.

FYCMA added chef and food critic Philippe Regol would also be at the event. Regol is known for his Gastronomic Observation blog, a site of reviews of restaurants from across Spain and the world.

Alfonso Alcantara, head of the professional food website Yoriento.com, is also set to appear at the fair.

The 2019 edition of the Gastromarketing fair will be the eighth in the series.

The show has seen leading food figures including Joan Roca, Dario Mendez, Erika Silva, Angel Leon, Dani Garcia, Jordi Roca, Mario Sandoval, Alberto Chicote, Francis Paniego and Paco Morales.

The event’s popularity has led to similar shows being held in Madrid and Argentina, according to FYCMA. The Gastromarketing fair is set to run from February 4 to February 6.

This week Celebrity Chef from Ready Steady Cook & Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of The Little Geranium in La Cala cooks us a heart-warming curry, loved by his regulars at lunchtimes!

www.thelittlegeranium.com LUNCH time at The Little Geranium is a totally different experience to our evening dinner by intention. I focus on Asian Oriental influenced dishes at lunchtime inspired by my time working in Thailand and Hong Kong.

I was in my 20s then and I wanted to learn about Asian food because it was the new trend back in the 80’s. It still is a trend, especially with the arrival of some of the big Asian brands like Nobu, Hakkasan, and Zuma. But in my opinion the more basic oriental restaurants need to evolve over here in Spain pretty quickly.

Generally the Chinese food reminds me of the restaurants that my father took me to

in the 70’s. I didn’t know any different in those days and thought that the crab soup made with no crab was amazing! I also thought that the finger bowl was a lemon soup.

It’s not difficult to make a great curry and you don’t need a million different ingredients, just the key ones. Our regulars insist on having a curry as part of their tapas choices at lunch time, some have even asked me to name the curry after them! Chicken curry, prawn curry and vegetable curry, the same sauce but put together differently, everyone loves it and everyone asks for the recipe so here it is!

One client who you will know is Lorraine Kelly, she loves the Asian flavours and always has a vegetable curry on the table as well as her favourite Thai beef salad.

dentally put too many chillies in it. The contestant spent 20 minutes chopping the coriander. I had made the curry, some mushroom rice and some dips along with a sort of quick flat bread in 20 minutes real time.

The coriander was the final touch and my contestant/assistant dropped it in the curry at the end and put a spoon in to taste. The smile on his smug face was wiped off by the sheer shock of the spice and it was a picture that I will always remember. So how is the chicken curry Fern Britton asks.

With squinting watering eyes and hollow husky voice he replies… Lovely! Talking through his breath he says… the coriander adds the final flavoor… So you live and learn and when you think you know it all you don’t and by making things over and over again is the only way to perfect them.

“Thanks Rob, is that all you love?” I asked. “No mate, I love it all and I love you,” and with that he grabs me and squeezes me and lifts me off the ground two feet, kissing me firmly on my lips. Gee thanks mate. It’s only a curry... Happy Birthday!

Heart-warming curry Ingredients • 4 Chicken breasts free range (campo or corral chicken) • 2 tbsp light olive oil • 2 onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 4 kaffir lime leaves or curry leaves • 1 cinnamon stick • 3 star anise • ½ litre coconut milk • 1 litre chicken stock • 1 tsp palm sugar (or soft brown sugar) • 2 tbsp light soy sauce • 2 tbsp fish sauce

To Finish

• Handful of coriander leaves, roughly chopped • 1 green pepper cut into julienne strips • 1 tablespoon of runny honey • Juice of half a lemon • Maldon salt and freshly ground black pepper add to taste • 2 mild green chillies deseeded and chopped roughly

For the Curry paste

• 5 garlic cloves, peeled and roughly chopped • 4 long, red Jalapeno mild chillies, deseeded and roughly chopped • 2 lemon grass stalks, trimmed with the outer leaves re-

moved and thinly sliced • 2 inch piece fresh root ginger, peeled and chopped • 4 large shallots, peeled and chopped • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 1 flat tbsp of medium curry powder or Ras al hanout • 2-3 tbsp light olive oil

Method

First make the curry paste.

1. Put the garlic, chillies, lemon grass, ginger, shallots and turmeric in a food processor and whizz to a paste. With the motor running, trickle in a little oil and blend well, scraping the sides of the processor several times. (Or you can pound the ingredients together in batches using a pestle and mortar).

To make the curry sauce

• Cut the chicken breasts into 1 inch pieces.

• Heat the oil in a large cast-iron casserole or heavy-based pan. Tip in the curry paste and stir over a medium heat for a few minutes. Add the onions and cook, stirring frequently, for five minutes until they are beginning to soften.

• Season the chicken breast pieces with salt and pepper. Add to the pan and stir to coat them in the spice paste.

• Now add the lime leaves, cinnamon stick, star anise, coconut milk, stock, sugar, soy and fish sauces and bring to the boil. Immediately reduce the heat to a simmer and cook gently on a low heat for 30-40 minutes until the chicken is tender.

CHICKEN CURRY: Serve with mushroom rice.

• Taste and add the seasoning, the strips of green pepper and the lemon juice and honey. Taste again.

• Finally add the chopped green chilli and chopped coriander, stir in and serve • Serve with rice or mushroom rice which I love. Simply fry off some mushrooms with a little garlic and fold them through your fluffy rice.

health FAN of priority boarding on a plane? Well you may want to rethink paying that bit extra to get on first if a study by Arizona State University is to be believed.

Their study concluded that priority boarding is bad for your health, as it increases the likelihood of spreading diseases.

They studied boarding scenarios to see how a disease would spread if one person was infected.

With priority boarding, the passenger is seated first towards the front of the plane meaning they are likely to come into contact with more people as other passengers go past them to find their seat, increasing their risk of coming into contact with an infected person.

They recommend using a two-zone boarding process, which is used by some companies who still board planes via external stairs directly into the plane.

This allows them to seat half the plane from the front and half from the back, which would lower passenger contact by around 27 per cent.

But there are things you can do to protect yourself against infection on a plane:

Go for a middle row seat Avoid the aisle seats. They offer the opportunity to stretch out a little more but you come into contact with more people passing through the aisle.

Disinfect your seat. Whilst planes are cleaned between flights it is unlikely they are cleaned as extensively as we would like to think so. Having a small pack of disinfectant wipes in your hand luggage to wipe around the seat and tray will reduce the risk.

Avoid sitting at the back of the plane, as this is where the bathrooms tend to be and people congregate there to wait in line, putting you in contact with more germs.

Pop a pill. Try taking a multivitamin, vitamin C tablet or sachet for your drink to increase your immune system and help protect it against any possible infections ahead of the flight.

AISLE SEAT: You come into contact with more people passing through the plane.

ARCH, the charity committed to looking after rescued horses, donkeys and mules in Alhaurin El Grande was founded in 2009 by a small group of horse lovers, all of whom had experience working with rescued animals.

Their original aim was to limit the number of animals that they rescued in order to ensure that each one was given the very best care and attention but when the economic downturn really hit Spain, they had to review their policy.

With the alternative being that many animals were being sent to slaughterhouses, the charity decided that they would save as many as possible whilst ensuring that they were still able to look after them properly.

At times, finances were strained but with many supporters and volunteers they managed to cope with the influx and now they find that

There work is still important and they try wherever possible to find new homes for their rescued animals but there are always new arrivals needing cared for.

Some cold weather advice ALTHOUGH people tend to think of the Triple A Animal Charity as being mainly concerned with looking after the well-being of dogs, in fact they have several hundred cats to look after as well.

Cats tend to be more able to cope without humans and create feral groups with kittens coming along every 70 to 80 days, so one of the main aims of the charity is to arrange to spay as many wild cats as possible.

Clearly this is also what they do with residents at the animal shelter which means that when they are adopted they will be fit and healthy and unable to produce kittens.

With the weather turning cold, feral cats (and even those who are looked after but are allowed to walk the streets) look for sources of heat and one of the most obvious is a car where the engine has recently been switched off.

Cats have a habit of lying underneath the car or even snuggling up on a tyre at the front and if they aren’t alert,

BE AWARE: Cats love warm cars. they can easily be injured or killed if the driver sets off without realising they are there.

There are always new cats and dogs arriving at the Triple A shelter in Marbella and the charity turns none away, but is desperate to secure funds to continue to look after them

and to find good homes for as many as possible both here in Spain and throughout Europe.

I HAPPENED to overhear part of a conversation recently, that appeared to be centred on a Discovery TV programme which had been aired, dealing with alien encounters.

“Do you believe in UFO’s?” one of the participants asked his companion. But before I heard his answer and at the risk of being accused of ear-wigging, I concentrated on my beer.

To me, it’s a stupid question anyway. I mean, if someone sees an object flying around that cannot be identified, it is therefore by definition an Unidentified Flying Object. Right?

No, the question should be: do you think UFOs are alien craft, top secret aircraft, weather balloons, shooting stars or a few glasses too many of good vino?

UFOs undoubtedly exist, but what the heck are they?

It’s an intriguing subject and it’s pretty plain that with the sheer scale of sightings worldwide, there is something going on.

STRANGE SIGHTING: But what exactly is it? flying saucer sightings, as they were then termed. I hadn’t heard of Roswell then or of Kenneth Arnold, a private pilot, who had reported seeing nine shiny discs travelling at what he estimated was 1,200 miles per hour zigzagging

through the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, and from which the term ‘flying saucer’ arose.

Although both events occurred almost a decade earlier in 1947, saucer mania was still sweeping the UK as well as the

US, and as a very young boy with a huge appetite for anything to do with space travel, I devoured science fiction stories and the exploits of comic heroes Dan Dare and Captain Condor of Eagle and Lion comics fame.

I was 10 years old when a school friend and I saw our first UFO. We w e r e p l a y i n g i n t h e s t r e e t o n e evening when we saw a cigar shaped object, travelling from west to east in the night sky. The object itself was dark, but made clear because of a halo of light surrounding it. It was travelling at a fair lick, but was visible for a number of seconds so that we were able to gather our thoughts and compare notes later.

Nobody believed our story of course, after all we were just two kids with vivid imaginations spinning another UFO porkie, but the memory is still very clear.

Having re-established contact with that same school friend through the power of the internet some years ago, almost the first thing we talked about was that night back in our early childhood and our UFO experience.

I experienced two further sightings just days apart some years later in Cornwall that defied explanation, but whatever these things are, the jury is still out on their origin and purpose.

47 - YEAR - OLD British woman has achieved one of her horse riding dreams after being selected to represent Andalucia in the sport of endurance riding.

Caroline Grahm, who has lived in Estepona for 20 years and runs Ranch Siesta Los Rubios riding stables, only started competing in the sport four years ago when she was introduced to it by friend and fellow competitor Tracy Lewis from Manilva.

“I have ridden since I was four years old but had never heard of endurance racing, it wasn’t big in Lancashire,” Caroline said.

“It’s a sport that’s predominantly for younger people and not that many women compete. So I just thought I’d give it a go for fun and started in a 40km race.

Miraflores bowls final is a thriller THE Miraflores Club Drawn Triples bowls final took place this week in warm sunny weather in Mijas Costa, after being postponed because of the heavy rain.

With a good entry and some hotly fancied triples being drawn, everyone present looked forward to a feast of quality bowling.

The early rounds saw some very closely contested matches, including one requiring an extra end.

Semi-finals were closely fought, but the teams of Stuart Thacker, Mike Woolley and Anne Clough, and Grant Frost, Wendy Wood and Pam Kinane won through.

Finals day arrived and as always there was a large group of expectant people watching on. Stuart and his team got off to a good start to lead 6-2 after five ends.

Grant and his team then took control by winning the next eight ends to take what appeared to be an unassailable 15-6 lead.

However, Stuart’s side snatched back the initiative by picking up nine shots over the next three ends to level the scores.

Grant’s team won the penultimate end only for Stuart to knock out the shot wood with his last bowl on the last end to tie the match 16-16.

The extra end saw Stuart’s team holding shot and Grant’s last wood narrowly missing the jack giving Stuart, Mike and Anne the title. Both teams received warm applause and congratulations from the crowd for their efforts.

The presenter of the trophy said that it was a shame there had to be a loser, and that it was one of the best finals he had witnessed.

The Miraflores Open starts on November 10 and entries close on Friday.

As always there will be a warm welcome for all spectators, with food and drink available from the bar.

“I bought Bambina in Sevilla last year after seeing her online. She had never done an endurance race before but there was just something about her I liked,” Caroline explained.

“People have nicknamed her the Champagne War Horse because she is totally unstoppable and fearless. Like a guided missile - point and go - just really fast.”

Endurance riding started officially as a sport in the USA in 1955 and has been rapidly growing in popularity across Europe in recent years.

This equestrian discipline is dominated by the Arab horse, which for centuries has been bred for both speed and stamina over any terrain.

Aside from the mental fitness and stamina required of both horse and rider over a tough 5.5 hour race, Caroline attributes a lot of their success to where they live.

“We have hundreds of kilometres of steep mountain trails on our doorstep in the Sierra Bermeja natural park behind Estepona.

It’s beautiful, challenging and superb fitness training for us both!”

Like most amateur sports, endurance riding is poorly funded with great distances to travel to competitions. Saturday’s race is in Badajoz, almost 500km away.

HOLDING COURT: Marbella is a big promoter of paddle tennis.

MARBELLA will be hosting an international paddle tennis tournament on March 17-24, 2019, as part of the ‘World Paddle Tour.’

Councillor for Sport, Javier Merida, was joined by the Councillor for Finance, Manuel Osorio, and the Director of the tournament in Spain, Luis Torres, as they unveiled the event.

The competition will take place at the Real Club de Padel de Marbella, as well as the Palacio de Sports Sampadreño Elena Benitez, with 150 of the best male and female players in the world involved.

Mr Merida highlighted the importance of paddle tennis in Marbella, and said: “We have first class sports facilities and this event will boost tourism and the economy in our city.”

Mr Torres thanked the council for its support and said that Marbella is the leading city in Spain for paddle tennis.

“Paddle tennis has five million players in Spain and is second only to football for the amount of fans of the sport,” he added.
