A storm with a twist

T O R N A D O emerged yesterday (Thursday) between Guadalmar and Torremolinos, which was captured on a member of the public’s phone. Despite the terrifying image of the storm that appears to be about to wreak havoc in the area, sources suggest it did not hit the ground and so was not able to cause major damage. The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) said that low atmospheric pressure had created a twister, and that they were monitoring the situation. of Andalucia for the rest of the week according to weather warnings. The 112 Andalucia emergency control centre has already been inundated with more than 50 calls for assistance, and emergency flood plans have been activated in Malaga City and
Coin in the Guadalhorce Valley. More than a dozen municipalities in Malaga Province have recorded incidents, including Estepona, Torremolinos, Coin, Velez-Malaga and Alhaurin de la Torre. Up to a dozen roads have been affected by
flooding and landslides, and the torrential rains have also left a nursing assistant slightly injured after a section of ceiling fell at the Hospital Civil in Malaga. A British man is also feared dead after vanishing during floods in Coin where he lived.
Roger Hanks, 73, has not been seen since Tuesday, just before heavy rain forced the evacuation of residents living by the side of the Pereilas river. The Guardia Civil, Local Police and Civil Protection officers are continuing the search for him, with volunteers.
