Empty hotel gutted by fire

A HUGE black cloud could be seen for miles after a fire broke out and destroyed an abandoned hotel in Torremolinos on Wednesday afternoon.

At 1.50pm several fire appliances, crews and a helicopter tackled the flames that devoured the Hotel Califa I, in Calle de la Cruz, which has sat empty for five years.

The Califa I, as well as other establishments in the area, belong to the Medina Azahara complex of the Summa Hoteles chain, which reportedly went bankrupt in 2014.

Witnesses claim the burned down building was being used by squatters in recent years.

The origin is still unknown, and an investigation is underway. Nobody was hurt.

Two explosions possibly linked TWO bombs went off within minutes of each other in Benahavis and San Pedro on Wednesday morning believed to be revenge or warning attacks.

The first blast occurred at a residential property at the gated

urbanisation of Mirador de la Alqueria in Benahavis at around 1am.

Minutes later, a device exploded at a commercial unit, reportedly owned by the same person whose home was targeted.

The warehouse and up to 10 cars were destroyed at the industrial estate in San Pedro.

No injuries were reported.

Shortly after the bombings, the Guardia Civil discovered a burned out, high-end BMW in the Nagueles area of Marbella,

and have launched an investigation.

Sources claim officers are linking the two incidents, which follow the discovery earlier in the month of a home-made bomb in a bin at Alto de los Monteros in Marbella.

The event was organised by the bars in the Plaza de la Tribuna (Bar Plaza España, Bar Torreón, The Terrace Bar, The Fountain Bar, La Loca Juana) with the collaboration of the foreign residents department of the local council.

Taking place last Saturday and Sunday the third edition of the event also attracted the mayor of Benalmadena, Victor Navas and the councillor for Foreign Residents, Ana Scherman.

It was well attended with plenty of fun-seekers joining some of the town’s 800 German residents seeking a reminder of their home country.

THE number of business licences granted in Marbella as of August rose by alm o s t 11 p e r c e n t o n t h e same period last year.

According to Jose Eduardo Diaz, councillor for Industry and Public Roads, 367 licences were registered as of the end of August, compared to 331 last year.

He also noted that in the months of July to August alone, 100 permits were approved, a significant rise on the 62 granted during the last two months last year.

THE husband of an Irish business woman who died suddenly while celebrating her 70th birthday in Malaga, has described her as his ‘soul mate for a lifetime..

Freda and Bryan Wilson, director and manager of building and civil engineering firm GF Wilson, in County Tyrone, had been in Spain just two days when she suffered a bleed on the brain.

The mother-of-three was hospitalised in Malaga on September 15, but never recovered and died on October 2.

Mr Wilson stayed at her bedside throughout, with their children taking it in turns to fly out.

He told an Irish newspaper that his wife was his ‘soulmate for a lifetime and was very interested in the church.’

She also loved spending time with her two grandchildren, as well as being an avid gardener.

Mr Wilson said his wife was in ‘perfect health’ when they arrived in Spain. He explained they went for a walk on September 14, spent an afternoon in the pool on Saturday, and that evening Mrs Wilson became unwell.

Her devastated husband said ‘she got a bleed on her brain and it became too complicated.’

The former teacher, originally from Ballybofey, was treated in a specialist unit where her heart reportedly stopped six times, before her ‘brain became too damaged and she died.’

The family were forced to use three separate airlines to get Mrs Wilson’s body back to Belfast.

Her funeral was held in Newtownstewart on Tuesday.

A DRUG dealer who was given 15 years for importing €80,000 of cannabis from Malaga Airport to Ireland must wait two weeks to find out if he will be granted early release.

Patrick Scanlon, 58, tricked innocent grandfather Stephen Quinn, into receiving four kilos of the drug at his home in Pallaskenry, Ireland, in August 2013.

While Mr Quinn was released without charge, Scanlon was detained and after an eight-day trial in Limerick, was convicted of importing the cannabis in May 2014.

The drugs were delivered to Malaga Airport on August 6 the previous year, having made their way through DHL depots in Spain, Belgium and England. But on arrival at Shannon Airport, they were intercepted by Customs officers and a drugs unit detective, posing as a courier driver, took them

to Mr Quinn’s home.

Scanlon’s original sentence was reduced to 11 years in the Court of Appeal, with a recommendation to review it half way through the term.

Appealing for his client’s early release this week, Andrew Sexton, raised this point.

But Lisa Buckley, prosecuting, said there remained ‘residual concerns’ about Scanlon in light of his history of addiction, and the fact he would be living with his brother, who faces criminal charges himself.

Before adjourning the matter until Monday, Judge O’Donaghue suggested a suspended sentence for six years, before requesting a report from Loughan House prison.

Other newspaper reports claim Scanlon had previously served a sentence in Limerick jail for drugs possession, during which time he ran two marathons while serving his sentence, and raised €44,000 for charity.

CHANGES: Historic hotel is to undergo significant changes in the New Year.

HE o w n ers of the historic Hotel Alay de Benaldamena will take responsibility for its management as of January 1.

This new arrangement will come into force once the current lease, held by the Ibersol Catalan group, expires at the end of the year.

The hotel, which has been open 50 years, was bought

by Hotel Alay SA in 2015, and carried out a major refurbishment to modernise facilities and ‘adapt them to a competitive market.’

And once it has taken over the reins, the company intends to carry out a further reformation project in time for the 2019 summer season.

Youth issues YOUNG people from Malaga took part in a three-day conference promoting healthy lifestyle techniques, organised by the Andalucian Youth Institute (IAJ).

The deputy director of the IAJ, Alicia Murillo, and the provincial coordinator, Noelia Suarez, spearheaded the forum, with the specific purpose of addressing issues such as sport, healthy eating and the safe use of social media networks.

A total of 1,399 young people are accredited as ‘youth correspondents’ in the province of Malaga, and their task is to collate information about matters which interest their peers, in educational centres, youth and neighbourhood associations and leisure facilities.

This research filters back within the initiative and allows the authorities to organise targeted, relevant events and initiatives.

Five injured in crash FIVE people have been injured in a collision between two cars on the A-7 in Benalmadena.

The crash occurred at a r o u n d 1 p m o n Tu e s d a y when several witnesses notified the emergency

services.

Three women aged 27, 38 and 54 were involved, and two men aged 29 and 51.

All of them have been transferred to the Hospital de Alta Resolucion in Benalmadena.

Massive clear up operation MASSIVE influx of jellyfish this summer has resulted in a huge increase in the tonnage of organic matter cleared from the coastline of western Costa del Sol. A wider fleet of seaboard boats worked a month longer this holiday season, and collected 80 tonnes of jellyfish and other organisms compared to 1.2 kilos during the same period last year (June 1 to September 15).

In contrast, 90 tonnes of plastic was removed from the shores and beaches this year, compared to four tonnes last year. Some 99 tonnes of algae was disposed of.

In Marbella alone, more than 27 tonnes of jellyfish and organic matter was cleared, representing 34 per cent of the total.

Almost 18 tonnes was recovered in Estepona, followed by Fuengirola, with 8.7 tonnes, Mijas (8), Torremolinos and Benalmadena (5.6), Manilva (4.2) and Casares (with 2.4 tonnes).

Charity Ball is positive and pink

T is that time of year again when El Oceano Hotel in La Cala de Mijas holds its fantastic Positively Pink Ball.

Positively Pink is the only charity on the Costa del Sol that is focused on raising money and awareness for free breast screening tests and support programmes for British women who live in Malaga Province.

It also does incredible work to help fund the improvement and enhancement of medical treatment, regularly holding events to bring in donations eg charity walks and fun runs.

and is another sell-out event, hoping to raise around €32,000 which would edge last year’s impressive total of €30,500.

Special guest auctioneer is Dan Hatfield, an expert pawnbroker and professional diamond grader.

He has fronted the popular Channel 4 TV show Posh Pawnbrokers and is presenting new show Collection Hunters where he and his team track down missing artefacts to complete people’s collections.

Now Dan is lending his considerable talents to the world of charity auctioneering at the Positively Pink Ball, as he joins its fight against breast cancer.

The Positively Pink charity was founded by the owner of El Oceano Hotel, Lorraine Palmer, who is

strongly supported by her daughter Jordana in their campaign.

The items to be sold at the auction are as fantastic as ever, and include a holiday to Las Vegas, two tickets to a Manchester United match (with hotel and return flights included), a pair of boxing shorts worn by British great Ricky Hatton, and a ring worth €7,000.

“Lorraine and Jordana are amazing and have worked really hard to get these prizes for the auction,” says Dan. “I’m tempted to bid for them myself and am expecting some generous bids from guests, who will be playing their part.”

Factory causes a stink RESIDENTS in a rural area of Alhaurin el Grande have complained to the council after learning of the plans of local firm Moreno y Plaza SA to build a new packaging plant for meat products near their homes.

Risky wall TEMPORARY fencing has been erected around the perimeter of the Andalucian School of Fuenguirola, after it was deemed at ‘serious risk of collapse.’

Ana Mata of the Popular Party and councillor for Education, Carmen Diaz, claim they have complained about the danger to the public and pupils for a year, and last week a routine inspection was carried out.

Now Mata is demanding the Junta de Andalucia fix the wall immediately.

A spokeswoman said the city council is preparing a report to have the wall rebuilt at the beginning of 2019, at a cost of €41,500.

Intu the void THE British developers of the mega entertainment complex planned for Torremolinos have set up a permanent office in readiness to start the project.

Intu now has staff working out of Congress Palace, which is next to 30 hectare site where it will build its €600 million leisure park.

The project, which is waiting for final planning approval from the regional government, is expected to create 2,500 direct and indirect jobs while it is being built, and 4,500 once open.

The firm, located on La Rosa industrial estate, maintains that the new 6,000 square metre plant would be environmentally friendly.

It is expected to have solar panels, a state-of-the-art water treatment system

and to create 100 jobs.

The plans are still provisional though, and are pending an environmental impact study by the Junta de Andalucia.

Local residents fear the bad smells

Cops to protect copper

O

FFICERS of the National Police have arrested a 23-yearold Spanish man in Malaga for allegedly sexually abusing 11 women.

Evidence from the investigation suggests that the man committed the crimes in the district of Teatinos and El Ejido.

He would approach his victims on a moped from behind and grope them in intimate areas.

To date, 11 women have come forward but it is possible that there are many more.

The victims are all young women, including an underage girl, and they were touched either on the chest, buttocks or genital area according to police sources.

The suspect wore a motorcycle helmet and carried out his assaults between 5am8.30am and 2pm-3pm.

HUNDREDS of residents in the El Romeral and Santa Amalia districts of Alhaurin de la Torre have been waiting since September 20 for their telephone landlines to be restored, after their connection was lost when thieves stole the copper wires.

This is not the first time it has happened and residents have shown their frustration by threatening to take action against Telefonica if it does not fix the lines.

The town’s mayor, Joaquin Villanova, has called for a greater Guardia Civil presence in the area to prevent further thefts from taking place.

In April, three arrests were made in connection with the theft of copper wires when a similar situation affected 1,000 residents.

MIJAS’ councillor for Sports, Nuria Rodriguez, has announced that the new equine therapy facilities at the Hippodrome are in operation.

The popular and novel therapy sessions are available 365 days a year, and unlike previously, now enjoy a roof so that they can run in any weather.

The council has invested €40,000 to provide better quality premises, including new flooring, ventilation and plumbing.

Ms Rodriguez said that equine therapy is an ‘essential’ service for people with special needs because ‘they are faced with many difficulties on a day-to-day basis’ and that the calm movements of the horses are very comforting.

The sessions are also popular with those who suffer motor neurone disease, autism, or young people with behavioural problems.

Members of UGT and Workers Commission protested against the increase in temporary contracts and labour inequality on Sunday, carrying banners and posters.

According to official statistics, two out of three permanent jobs do not last more than 12 months, and partial contracts have shot up more than 60 per cent since 2005, with Malaga being the Andalucian province with the least solid employer commitment.

I AM not a morning person. I’ll happily work from midday to 3am but please don’t expect me to function at, say, 7am, a time when my sleep is at its deepest, and my dreams most vivid.

So when I got an email from Sarah Major, who hosts Radio Sheffield’s early morning ‘god-slot’, asking whether I could do a telephone interview for her programme on September 30 she got a resounding no.

She was so anxious to get my views about the 30th anniversary of the publication of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses that she suggested a pre-recorded interview instead - and to this - I readily agreed.

Why choose me for the interview? Sarah had ascertained that I edit the Freethinker magazine, launched in 1881 in the UK. The anti-religious publication immediately became cause célèbre when its founder, George William Foote, was charged with blasphemy and sentenced to a year’s imprisonment with hard labour.

FREE SPEECH: Salman Rushdie got the death sentence for his book. authorities hoped, kill off the publication. Instead its popularity soared and in its hey-day it was bought by thousands each week, by people who were fed up to their back teeth with religious leaders banging on about their various brands of superstition.

Blasphemy was back in the headlines after the publication of The Satanic Verses. Muslims in the

UK and abroad took to the streets and demanded that Rushdie be prosecuted for offending Islam, and were in full support of a fatwa issued by Iran’s religious head, Ayatollah Khomeini, to have Rushdie assassinated.

Sarah Major wanted my thoughts on whether freedom of expression over the past three decades had improved or worsened, and I told

her that, without a doubt, that it was now becoming a great deal more difficult to say anything at all that would give offence to faith-heads of all stripes.

I forcefully made my point that all religions were ridiculous, and that the millions of people who happily live their lives without a smidgeon of faith should be free to ridicule the words and actions of religious lead-

ers whenever they say or do something stupid.

Coincidentally, a day after Major’s programme was aired, Brendan O’Neill, editor of Spiked magazine, published a piece entitled We are all Ayatollahs now.

In it he argued that fatwas against offensive speech are now issued daily, by the Western Twitterati as much as by Eastern religious tyrants. Intolerance of so-called blasphemy against Islam and Muhammad is now as pronounced in trendy Western circles as it is in Islamic imam circles.

“The stunningly arrogant belief that anyone who offends one’s faith or ideology or identity deserves to be severely reprimanded - the belief that motored the Ayatollah’s death sentence on Rushdie - is now the central belief of virtually every new political movement in Western academic and public life.

He concluded: “Thirty years after Rushdie’s novel was published, the battle isn’t over. The struggle for the right of people to think what they like and say what they please, and to mock all gods, prophets, ideas and fads, remains as pressing today as it has ever been.” I couldn’t agree more.

MAYOR and councillor for Social Rights, Isabel Cintado, helped raise awareness for World Mental Health Day this week by visiting Afesol’s information desk in Marbella Town Hall.

The mayor recognised the work done by the Association of Relatives and People with Mental Illnesses in the Costa Del Sol, and added: “The support of the council is very important for a group like this, which aims to approach the younger population and educate on values that involve diversity and inclusion.”

Under the slogan ‘inclusive education, positive mental health’, the annual Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness about the need

for associations in order to help relatives and people with mental illnesses. In addition, Afesol exhibited some of the work it does through different workshops.

Association representative, Gustavo Acin, said: “Together with an educational approach we look for preventive opportunities, for example, greater knowledge of adolescents, young people who have mental problems, and a greater social understanding of them.”

He pointed out that one-in-four people will suffer some kind of mental imbalance throughout their lives, and that Afesol currently works with 50 people, together with their families, in the area.

Road forward

IJAS Council has taken responsibility for the maintenance of the road that connects the A7 motorway with the AP7 in Calahonda.

Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado, made the announcement last week, and pointed out that the transfer means the council, “can act on the track in a more immediate way without having to request permits that delay the implementation of improvements.

“From now on the city council will be responsible for the conservation and maintenance of this road.”

Maldonado added: “So, in this sense, we meet a historical move for the area by making a leap in the quality of life of the residents.”

Equal opportunities AN initiative aimed at bringing together inspirational women to demonstrate that gender does not have to be an issue in the workplace, will be held at the Congress Palace in Marbella on Monday.

Professional women within the respective sectors will give talks and question and answer sessions, to young female students in their third year of secondary school at the Sierra Blanca Institute.

The pupils, aged 13 and 14, will meet female representatives from industries traditionally considered male-dominated, such as science and technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The city council has organised the event to mark the United Nations International Day of the Young Girl.

Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Isabel Cintado, who will be responsible for overseeing the event, said: “The three key objectives are to promote equality and equity between genders in society, emerge talent, and support education in areas called STEM, where there is an unjustified gender gap.”

The day will begin with a session of work by groups, of one hour and a half duration (speed networking), in which the students, distributed in tables, will chat in rounds of 10 minutes with each of the eight volunteers involved.

Marina to get a makeover has struggled with leaks over the years and given that there are now 81 shops and bars that face onto it, the council has decided to take action.

Relevant permits are being sought from the

Public Ports Agency of Andalucia which will enable the council to put the contract for the works out to tender.

This will involve the demolition and resurfacing of the promenadeʼs

paving, and also that of the commercial premises.

There will also be a new pedestrian access to the marina, to encourage more footfall in its direction, but which will

comply with all safety regulations.

Up until now access to the port has only been possible at the sides, and the works will also improve the aesthetics of the area.

Council faces up to locals RAFAEL PIÑA, deputy mayor of San Pedro Alcantara, announced that a business survey promoted by the councilʼs Tourism and Commercial Promotion department has gone into a new phase.

The study will gather information on the consumption habits of residents, and Mr Piña will talk with the locals.

The initiative originated from the councilʼs Economic Development Roundtable back in May to identify the buying trends of residents in order to better respond to their needs.

Mr Piña was joined on the public meet and greet by councillor Silvia Ruiz who said: “When we began to analyse the behaviour of the locals we realised there was no specific survey on this, beyond the opinion of businesses.”

A bit of a blow

WITH all the bad weather that hit Europe thanks to hurricane Helene blowing her top in mid Atlantic, and her big sister Florence causing mayhem in the Carolinas, it reminded me of my own encounter with another one of the family 45 years ago.

That oneʼs name was Alice.

Hurricanes rarely hit Bermuda with full intensity because their favourite hunting grounds are much further south centred in the Caribbean and often venting their full force on the US South Eastern seaboard.

However they do on occasion come dangerously close to Bermuda and in 1973 a hurricane warning was issued for Wednesday, July 4.

The eye-wall of the storm was due to brush the islands during the early evening and I was determined to get a good look at it.

Businesses closed early, buildings were secured and as a loss of power was envisaged, stores sold out of hurricane lamps and candles.

As it happened I had a dinner invita-

tion that evening with a colleague and his wife, which gave me time to first ride out to the North Shore and watch Alice pass by before returning to Hamilton where they lived.

Big mistake.

This may not have been one of the ʻbig onesʼ, but the sight of Alice as she approached was pretty awesome. I should have kick started my Suzuki right there and skedaddled, but I wanted to see just a little bit more before I departed.

But these things travel fast and bef o r e I k n e w i t I w a s w h i p p e d o ff m y bike and all hell broke loose as I was blown to the ground and felt parts of my clothing being ripped away as I scrabbled to find a handhold somewhere.

If somebody had told me years earlier that one day I would be in Bermuda having my clothes ripped off by someone called Alice, I would have said: ʻbring it on!ʼ But this foreplay was a bit too rough for me.

Goodness knows how I managed to retrieve my bike but I did and eventually, having started the damn thing, I rode a squiggly and hazardous line to m y f r i e n d ʼs h o u s e w h e r e I a r r i v e d some time later.

His door opened to a forlorn figure wearing a shirt that was ripped from throat to waist and hanging off; muddy chinos with holes in both knees, and with hair standing straight up in gooey rods. - clutching a miraculously intact - bottle of red wine.

“You neednʼt have gone to so much trouble,” he said deadpan. “ S o r r y, I t o l d h i m , “ A l i c e w a s brassed off because she wasnʼt invited.”

BACK in July 2012, Spain was in the middle of its third straight year of recession since the start of the financial crisis in 2008.

A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) composed a report describing the outlook for the eurozoneʼs fourth largest economy as ʻbleakʼ. But, according to reports, the final document instead used the more neutral ʻvery difficultʼ.

It is understood that some members of the Executive Board of the IMF were critical of the changes to the report, saying they went against their usual policy of transparency.

However, another one denied that the changes were substantial, and said was justified so as not to cause alarm in the markets.

Records of the meeting where the decision was made show that Brazilʼs Jose Pedro Fachada - an executive director at the IMF - said: “The Board insists on the importance of warning countries about the risks, but these warnings have been considerably reduced.”

Another executive director, Thanos Catsambas, disagreed with Fachada and said, “our chairman thought the corrected

Martin Mühleisen, director of the Strategy, Policy and Review Department, added that “the goal was not to change the reportʼs message. The text is

honest about the risks.” He said that the changes were justified because of the marketʼs sensitivity, and warned that the original wording could be misinterpreted by the public.

The records of the meeting also show officials of the IMF talking the possibility of a full bailout for Spain, and similar to that experienced in Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

New law stops electric cut-off

ACCORDING to the text of a new Royal Decree approved in the Spanish Parliament, utility companies will not be allowed to cut off electricity supplies due to non-payment if there are children involved.

Electricity companies will also be required to make their bills easier to understand and to inform customers on them how their costs can be reduced.

In addition, the Royal Decree also bans door-to-door salespeople who visit householders in an attempt to convince them to sign up to different gas and electricity companies.

The new law attempts to ease the blow to customers following the large increases in the wholesale market and with the coldest months of the year around the corner.

Discounts for customers on low-incomes have been raised to 15 per cent, and will be backed up with a ʻheating bonusʼ paid directly to those families already receiving a reduction if their household brings in earnings below the minimum wage.

The heating allowance will be tailored according to customersʼ ʻlevel of vulnerabilityʼ in financial and other terms - such as health conditions or disability - and also to average temperatures in their part of Spain.

Single parents are now included automatically in the description of those who are likely to be eligible.

The man with nine lives

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com YOU only live once; live it properly and once is enough but I decided to add other lives to mine. As a consequence I accompanied my African friend as she made her epic odyssey from African kraal to university followed by much travel.

I lived life in a Fijian idyll, enjoyed a ringside seat at the Pacific regionʼs best boxing bouts, and lived in Franco Spain when a visa was required of Britons wishing to live here.

One doesnʼt need to experience reincarnation to suffer in war-torn Hamburg, explore shipwrecks, or share the bedroom of one of the most prolific hookers on the Spanish Riviera. My key to living extra lives was to use my ghost-writing skills to help those who have great stories to tell. I currently have 52 books with my name on their covers.

I did learn that it is impossible to be unemotional when sharing the lives of others. The best compli-

Many people experienced traumas that are gut-wrenching in their telling. As I described ordeals suffered by an Irish youngster in a

remote penal institution there were times when I had to put my pen to one side and take time to compose myself.

Thereʼs an upside too for thereʼs not many who stayed in Sammy Davis Juniorʼs hotel suite in Las

Vegas, or played the tables in the gambling cityʼs casinos accompanied by Joan Collins and Burt Reynolds.

To hold oneʼs book is a lifetime experience and for those in the entertainment industry a ʻThis is

my Lifeʼ book makes a bigger impression than does turning up in a limo.

Getting oneʼs book on conventional or online bookshelves can be problematic. Publishers are reluctant to add new authors whilst Amazon rarely delivers.

DIY (Distribute it Yourself) did bring success, a method further enhanced by the onset of cost-effective, low-cost, book printing. It is now possible to have printed as few as 200 books at less than one third of each bookʼs selling price.

What do I do with the books delivered by the carrier? My practice was to visit stores, not necessarily bookshops, and offer reasonable quantities at 35 per cent discount on a sale-or-return basis.

When doing my rounds the shopkeeper pays only for the books he sells. Alternatively, offer a commission and others will do it for you. The advantage is that you get the chance to place your books where they will most likely be seen by customers.

Does the strategy work? I shifted 3,000 copies of my books in six months; neither Amazon nor conventional publishers can beat that.

More direct object pronouns Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE are moving forward with our explanation of ʻdirect object pronounsʼ, so letʼs take as our starting point the sentence we looked at last week: ʻEl niño lee el libroʼ. - The boy reads the book. ʻEl niño lo leeʼ. - ʻThe boy reads itʼ.

This sentence demonstrates what we have learnt so far. That is, that a direct object pronoun replaces the direct object (the thing that directly receives the action of a verb). In other words, in English ʻitʼ replaces ʻthe bookʼ.

We also saw that in Spanish, the equivalent of it goes in front of a verb.

There are in fact three instances when the direct object pronoun can be linked to the end of a verb itself, but we will look at those later.

In English we have several direct object pronouns and here they are: me, you, him, her, it, us, them We need to be clear in our minds that we are talking about object pronouns specifically here, because two of them are also used in English as subject pronouns (you and it) and one of them doubles up as a possessive adjective (her).

If you didnʼt understand that last sentence donʼt worry too much, just remember that some of these words can have other uses.

We tend to complain when Spanish words have duplicate uses and meanings, but in fact English is just as bad, itʼs just that we donʼt have to think about it so we

Cherry juice to get more rest

The best of Spanish beers SPAIN is better known for its wines but they also produce some excellent beers, here are some of the best of the local amber nectars.

Damm Inedit - This beer was created in conjunction with Ferran Adria (of El Bulli fame) and is made with cilantro in the hop mix as well as some orange peel and liquorice.

Proof: 4.8º.

Alhambra 1925 - This beverage has a distinctive caramel taste followed by a slightly bitter, refreshing aftertaste.

Proof: 6.8º. Price: €1 for a 33cl bottle.

Mahou cinco estrellas - A real classic and especially refreshing; it has a light acidity and a taste of toasted hops. Proof: 5.5º.

Cruz Campo Gran Reserva 1904 This draught is made from 100 per cent best quality malt, it has an intense and balanced taste with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Proof: 6.4º.

So now you know what to order next time you go to the bar.

BEER: Not a simple choice.

DRINKING cherry juice may improve sleep patterns amongst older people who suffer from insomnia.

Researchers from Louisiana State University (US) found that drinking tart cherry juice in the morning and evening may help people to sleep better at night.

Drinking the juice twice a day for two weeks helped increase sleep time by nearly 90 minutes it was revealed at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nutrition.

Insomnia - defined as trouble sleeping on average more than three nights per week - is a common problem among older adults, and can seriously affect their health.

It is linked to a higher prevalence of chronic pain, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and a decline of cognitive function, or dementia.

THE number one dessert in all of Spain, but particularly in Madrid City, is the immensely traditional ‘Chocolate con Churros.’

Although often eaten for breakfast, many people like it for dessert too.

It is a fried batter whose saltiness mixes gloriously with the bitterness of the chocolate which is served thick and hot.

In Cantabria they go for the ‘Sobaos Pasiegos’ which is a sort of sponge cake soaked in butter and sugar, sometimes with the addition of lemon rind and rum; this has been made in the area since around 1896.

In the region of Madrid, not to be confused with the city, they favour ‘Torrijas’; this is bread, usually stale, which has been soaked in milk or wine then coated in egg and fried in oil - it is normally served with honey or sugar.

In Cataluña the ‘Crema Catalana’ rules supreme.

This is very much like a crème brulee and consists of eggy cream which has been covered in sugar which is then caramelised.

The Balearic Islands have given the cuisine of Spain the ‘Ensaimada’

Most popular Champagne desserts by region and cava which is a sweet pastry, of the Danish style, covered in caster sugar this has been served in Mallorca since before records began.

The ‘Tarta de Santiago’ is the favourite in Galicia and has been made there since the pilgrimages started. It is an almond sponge cake decorated with the cross of St

In the hills of Asturias they prefer the ‘Arroz con Leche’ which is not unlike rice pudding and is

The ‘Horchata’ is a drink made from Tiger nut milk and has been served very cold in Valencia for hundreds of years.

Regardless of where in Spain you go there will always be something sweet waiting for you.

bubbles THESE most festive of drinks wouldn’t be the same without their characteristic bubbles.

The bubbles in Champagne and cava form because they go through two fermentation processes, the first to change the grape juice into wine and the second to change the wine into Champagne or cava. It is this second fermentation, with yeasts and sugars, which produces an abundance of CO2 which can let out up to 30 bubbles per second.

The University of Reims, in France, did a study on the importance of bubbles in Champagne and cava and concluded that they were essential not only for the look of the drink, but also for the sensation on the tongue; there should be a lot of them, they should not be too big and should have a life of their own!

They also contain several compounds which make the Champagne taste better.

www.thelittlegeranium.com EL INVIERNO (winter) is looming and what better way to welcome it than some slow cooked heart warming dishes.

My slow cooked duck recipe is not exactly new, in fact I’ve been doing it for a thousand years, well at least 40! I recall a Christmas back in about 1982 when I cooked slow cooked duck for Suzi Quatro (the pop star) and some friends.

I had pre-prepared the duck (which twice cooks perfectly) and drove to the house with them for a pre-Xmas meal. The client/friend was called Mark Berryman and the house was a grand hall near Finchingfield, Essex, but I don’t remember the name.

Anyway, I drove down this impressively

long drive through electric gates and parked up outside the front of this beautiful hall. The hall was well illuminated outside, you could see the snow resting on the immaculate lawns and topiary with a scattering of snow on top of the swimming pool to the side of the hall.

As I walked through the large Regency front door with my ducks in my hand, I was overcome by the huge Xmas tree standing prominently in the foyer of the hall, a real statement that Christmas had arrived!

In the background I could hear the sound of a guitar playing gentle festive music and as I walked into the room there was Suzi Quatro, a friend of the Berrymans. I know it was not her style to play gentle music but she did it so well. It was a magical memory and encapsulates everything that Christmas should be, a huge log fire burning in the inglenook, an enormous overstated Xmas tree, beautiful Xmas music, elegant decorations everywhere, great food, good wine with close friends and family enjoying every moment.

I literally shoved my ducks in the Aga and we all sat at the long dining table and tucked into a dinner of roast turkey, roast slow cooked duck and roast beef, Brussels and crispy roasted potatoes, and I served up a sauce with kumquats to give a twist to classic

duck a la orange. Half way through the dinner Suzi commented on the duck.

She said this is the best duck she had ever eaten and it was the first time she had those tiny oranges. They are a delight she said in her American (Michigan/Detroit) accent.

Suddenly I was of interest in the room.

Mark said… gosh sorry, this is our friend Steven who runs The White Hart Gt Yeldham (a beautiful 15th century restaurant bordered by the River Colne, close by). Everyone applauded.

The restaurant had a good name and I was very young (about 21) so they were surprised that the food was so good. They all seemed to love this simple dish and I have to say it was and still is exceptional, although over the years I have evolved it. The problem with slow cooking a duck is that you might dry it out if you’re not careful.

I now like to cook it in a souvide machine (trendy water bath) which keeps it moist (sealed in a vacpac) and then fast roast it to get a crispy skin. But I understand that not everyone will have a machine like that, so I am giving you the next best alternative which is slow roasted upside down to keep all the moisture in and then afterwards, crispy roasted.

Served at this time of the year with apples, winter berries or confit kumquats (tiny oranges!) it is just a delight to eat.

Years later in the Ready Steady Cookdays I wrote about the duck in one of my cook books. (The book is called Chef’s Secrets published by Boxtree and it was published in 1996.) The recipe is called Steven’s famous Pink Geranium Crispy Duck, page 66.

So here is that recipe slightly evolved for the better, have a go, you never know Suzi may insist on an invite!

Ingredients for 2 ducks serving 4 people Ingredients 2 ducks weighing approx. 2 kg each 1/2 kilo of fresh kumquats or cooking apples like Bramleys 8 tablespoons of caster sugar 1 litre of water 2 sticks cinnamon Maldon salt 1 tablespoon of Chinese 5-spice 500 ml of good rich chicken stock ½ bottle of white wine 1 tablespoon of orange liquor (to finish)

Method Firstly remove the legs from the duck.

This is because they will cook better at a different time and because a half a duck is usually too much for one person especially when we are serving many vegetables with it.

Now rub the salt and the Chinese spice into the ducks and place upside down (breasts down) into a glass baking dish.

(They won’t stick so much in a glass dish)

In a pre heated oven (130ºc) slow cook the ducks for 3.5 hours Whilst cooking prepare your chosen vegetables (seasonal veggies are the best like Brussels, parsnips, roasted carrots etc) Prepare the sauce by reducing the chicken stock with the white wine to about half, allow to cook and reduce for about 45 mins or until syrupy and a thickish consistency.

Now put one litre of water in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Add and dissolve the sugar and now add the kumquats and cinnamon and cook for about 30 mins until soft, tender and with a sweet and sour taste.

If the flavour is a little too sweet add a touch of vinegar, if not sweet enough add more sugar. You are looking for a sweet and sour (Haribo!) flavour After 3.5 hours remove the ducks and allow to rest until needed. They will twice cook excellently so when you need them allow for about 30 mins and fast roast at a full blast oven (approx 250ºC) until golden

CRISPY DUCK: Twice roasted. duce the kumquat syrup down until thick - it usually takes about 30 minutes. When cold this will set like a jelly and you can use the jelly for adding sweetness to any sauce or even use it as a home-made marmalade!

Use a little of the cooking kumquat liquor or the marmalade into the jus to add flavour.

Finally carve the duck breasts from the carcass and serve one per person.

Serve the sauce separately and the roasted vegetables in the centre of the table.

If you slow roast the legs in the same way as the whole duck you can simply pick off the meat and use it for my crispy duck salad recipe, the one with the oriental dressing. FAST FOOD: Some are healthy.

Fast and healthy ALTHOUGH we spend less and less time cooking and pay less and less attention to what we eat, paradoxically we are more and more worried about looking after our health, but a lack of time is not incompatible with eating good, healthy meals.

Store-bought fast food, usually for the microwave, tends to rely on fats, sugars and salt to tempt our palate, but these are bad for the body and high in calories - the same food can be made at home more cheaply and without the added fats etc.

Obviously some ingredients take longer to cook than others so with a little organising and planning, the job can get done in a shorter space of time.

If one day is set aside to spend a little more time in the kitchen, then we can cook really quickly for the rest of the week; par boiling vegetables and then freezing them is a good way to lessen time in the kitchen, planned meals are always faster than ‘inspirational’ cooking (it is always a good idea to have a meal plan when shopping).

There are also many products which are not ‘fast food’ but are nearly ready to eat and healthy - tinned and frozen fish and vegetables, for instance, don’t have the added sugars, fats or salts.

Just remember not to sacrifice your health for the sake of an extra five minutes in the kitchen.

To highlight this important campaign, we wanted to answer your questions on conditions which can lead to blindness and how to stop avoidable blindness.

Q. What is the most common cause of avoidable blindness?

A. Cataracts are responsible for almost 50 per cent of all blindness. It is common around the world, but thankfully in developed countries it can be easily treated with surgery. The WHO Action Plan hopes to give more people access to this sight saving surgery.

Q. What other ocular conditions can lead to blindness if not treated?

A. Glaucoma is known as the silent destroyer of sight and is one of the world’s leading causes of blindness, but it can be easily identified with an eye test and treated with drops if caught early. Diabetes can produce diabetic retinopathy, which can permanently impair vision. Not all diabetes leads to vision loss, but regular screening is important.

Q. What can I do to stop avoidable blindness?

A. Most importantly, get your eyes tested regularly and ensure your optician is including eye health tests in this examination. Also, teach children how to care for their eyes, as accidents are responsible for too many cases of blindness in the young.

MANY adults are turning away from gyms due to back pain.

Around two-fifths of adults in the UK said they avoided exercise because of pain in the lower back according to a survey of more than 2,000 adults which was commissioned by the British Chiropractic Association.

However they said that the sp i n e i s n a tu ra l l y stro n g a n d moderate exercise, when done correctly, can help to build and maintain its strength and posture and actually protect you from further pain in the long run.

Meanwhile the Association reminds people that changes in lifestyle are also affecting back health, with fashion maybe more a concern than hitting the gym.

Current fashions are changing the way women walk and this is having a detrimental impact on their health. Skinny jeans for example, restrict the movement of the knees and hips which puts extra pressure on the back. High heels are also often criticised for the pres-

sure they put on feet and back when walking.

Mobile phone use has also recently been highlighted as a cause of back pain with people hunched over looking at their phone screens.

Back pain is one of the most common ailments with four in five people expected to suffer at some point in their lifetime.

So what can you do to help prevent aches and pains in your back but still want to work out?

Be safe. If you exercise at the gym make use of the professional staff they have.

When signing up for the first time, everyone should be shown how to use the equipment efficiently and safely by a qualified instructor.

D o n ’ t o v e r d o i t . Yo u r b o d y can do a lot and whilst you need to push it at times, remember you are not an Olympic athlete and listen to your body.

Take things slowly, particularly when starting out and ask an instructor to advise on a safe way of training to push yourself without going beyond

Phone reminders AN initiative has launched in Zaragoza to help remind patients to take their medication.

A group of nurses has developed the programme aimed at particularly helping diabetic patients and those who suffer from depression.

They plan to carry out telephone support interventions as a means of helping patients to better comply with their medical treatment and remind them to take their medication.

The scheme will initially run for 18 months as a trial to see how effective it is with patients following their treatment plan.

They will receive regular calls to check their progress and remind them of their treatment.

The plan has been developed at the University of Zaragoza.

Sing your way to happiness HOBBIES have always been known to boost your mood; partaking in some time out of work and responsibilities to do something you enjoy, and joining a choir now seems to be the latest mood booster.

A new study in Australia has found that joining a choir can help fight against sadness and boost emotions.

The Australian scientists asked volunteers suffering

from mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety to take part in their study and try different social arts-based activities.

Singing was found to boost the immune system with just one hour of singing increasing levels of the immune proteins that help the body to battle illness significantly.

Each activity was undertaken once a week over nearly three months and volunteers were asked to describe how they felt at

different points of the day to measure the effects of the activity with singing shown to boost emotions.

They found that writing poems in a group also made people happier and the scientists believe their findings could pave the

way for more participation in artsbased groups to beat the blues.

ALTHOUGH the majority of animal charities on the Costa del Sol are mainly involved in rescuing and rehoming cats and dogs, many also look after any domestic animal that may have been abandoned.

One such charity is Protectora de Animales Domésticos de Mijas Costa (PAD) which has over the years seen a number of reptiles come through its doors and on its website http://www.padcat sanddogs.org, you can see Gub Gub the iguana and Buster the tortoise who were found new homes.

Indeed a number of the

animals who are rehoused are adopted by Scandinavians and sent by air to their new homes.

The upkeep of the animal shelter is not cheap and PAD relies on donations and regular fundraising in order to be able to afford to look after the animals in its care.

Over the next two weeks there are two events which readers are welcome to take part in as a way of assisting the charity.

Next Tuesday (October 16) there will be a quiz night starting at 7.30pm at Bridges Bar in Mijas and then on Sunday October 28, comes

Help to save an animal’s life IT can be very expensive when a dog needs an operation and the money has to be found from somewhere as its life may be on the line.

This was the case with Rexie who arrived at the Triple A animal shelter in Marbella completely lame in one leg.

There was no option other than to have the leg amputated but the cost of that as well as physio for another dog Pasja who had been paralysed following a spinal attack had to be found from somewhere and after an appeal to followers, much of the €500 that was needed to pay the vet was donated quickly.

Now Rexie is getting used to having lost three parts of his anatomy, one leg and two testicles and Pasja is able to get around even if somewhat gingerly at the moment.

WHEREAS the new Peugeot 508 SW will be meeting the public for the first time at the 2018 Paris Car Show, Peugeot has presented a limited edition called First Edition.

Based on the high-end GT finish, the Peugeot 508 SW First Edition limited edition has new exterior attributes: shiny black grille surround, Augusta twintone 19” alloy wheels with Grey Dust varnish. It will be available in three colours: Dark Blue, Pearly White and Amazonite Grey.

The Peugeot 508 SW First Edition will be available in PureTech 225 S&S EAT8 and BlueHDi 180 S&S EAT8 engines, which are approved according to the WLTP certification protocol.

The interior of the new Peugeot 508 SW First Edition is adorned with Zebrano essence wood trim and black or red Sellier leather. Induction smartphone charging is available, as well as the digital radio and the 10” HD capacitive touch screen. Porsche 911 Speedster special edition

THE concept study, presented during the 70th birthday of the sports car manufacturer, will be produced as a limited special edition: Porsche has decided to start producing the purist Porsche 911 Speedster in the first half of 2019.

Exactly 1,948 units of the open-top two-seater will be built. The number acknowledges the Porsche 356 ‘Number 1’ that received its operating licence on June 8 back in 1948.

The two ‘Talbot’-shaped exterior mirrors as well as the fuel tank cap - centrally positioned on the bonnet - shine in black-chrome and platinum. In contrast to the previously shown ‘Heritage’ version, the interior is using partly perforated black leather upgraded with red highlights.

The concept car ’s body is b a s e d o n t h e 9 11 C a r r e r a 4 Cabriolet. The fenders, as well as the front and rear bonnet are made from lightweight carbon fibre composite while the chassis was taken from the 911 GT3.

Furthermore, the GT development department provided the exhaust system with its titanium tailpipes and the drivetrain including the manually operated six-speed gearbox. The same goes for the centrepiece of the limited special edition: The Speedster Concept is powered by a naturally-aspirated flat-six engine developing more than 500 hp and capable of engine speeds up to 9,000 rpm.

Bowled over

A TOTAL of 48 representatives from bowling clubs across Andalucia as well as members of Mijas Lawn Bowls Club (MLBC) attended the official opening of the refurbished green and facilities at Mijas Lawn Bowls Club.

The guests were welcomed by acting MLBC President R o b e r t Wr i g h t . T h e cutting of the ribbon to the green was performed by April Attenbourgh (longest serving member), Pam Cole (long-term services to MLBC) and John Carr (green renovation support).

The visitors enjoyed play in three mini-fun sessions, during which each player was able to test the performance of half of the playing surface.

Walking football THIS Saturday, Walking Football Spain’s teams from Benalmadena, Marbella and San Pedro will be playing against Athletico Blackthorn from Essex.

There will be three matches involving players aged from 50 to 74 years. As always, these matches involve WALKING, no running and no physical contact. The event is always very entertaining.

The activities will take place at Polideportivo Benalmadena (next to the Bull Ring) and will begin at 10am with the last match finishing at 1pm.

All are welcome to come and watch and they always welcome new members to join the Walking Football.

MLBC is seeing a significant increase in membership numbers for the upcoming season and the future of lawn bowls on the Costa del Sol seems secure for the foreseeable future.

H o w e v e r, t h e y a l ways welcome new or experienced bowlers visiting the club for the day or short-term memberships or as part of a touring group.

Ladies on tour THE Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España will take place from November 19 to 25. This will be the last tournament of the Ladies European Tour for this year.

The tournament will take place at the La Quinta Club and Country Club of the Westin La Quinta Golf Resort and Spa. The main sponsors for this year’s event are Turismo de Andalucía, Turismo Costa del Sol and Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental (Acosol).
