The victim, who has not been named, suffered horrific injuries after reportedly being tricked into meeting with his attackers in Marbella.

He is believed to have been knee-capped, suffered broken bones in his lower body, and was cut from the corners of his mouth up to his ears, known as the Glasgow or

Spanish police have not yet made any arrests and local reports say the victim is showing little cooperation.

He remains in a serious

condition at Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital, where he was admitted in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Investigators are working on the theory he was

tortured as part of a ‘warning’ by members of a crime gang, who targeted him after he arrived in the area the night of the attack.

A TOTAL of 842 children in ‘conflict’ situations were cared for at Family Encounter Points (PEF) in the city and region of Malaga and Marbella within the first six months of the year.

Some 586 files, 418 of which (71 per cent) dealt with by the Junta de Andalucia, were of a ‘violence against women’ nature.

The public resource, which is managed by the ministry of Justice and the Interior, deals with children caught up in cases dealt with by the courts.

The meeting points offer a neutral space to allow minors to interact with their parents and relatives who do not have custody following a judicial process.

In cases of gender violence, PEF procedures are adopted to avoid contact between the aggressor and victim, while setting a time protocol that complies with court measures imposed on the person investigated or punished.

The team of specialists are made up of psychologists, social workers and teachers, specifically trained to deal with cases of family conflict.

Rolling their sleeves up

TIRED of seeing dirty streets and cracked paint jobs, a group of neighbours from Torremolinos have decided to clean the public spaces themselves.

Organised through social media networks, members of the group dedicate their time and money improving parks, streets, and public squares.

The volunteer base is growing each day, with a current 400 members, new recruits and donations, such as paint and other supplies, are always welcome.

One of the administrators, Sergio Morales, said complaints had been made to the council, adding that their efforts serve as a ‘wake up call’ to the authorities.

PRICES rose 0.2 per cent in Andalucia for the month of August, a 10th higher than the national average, while the inflation rate stood at 2.1 per cent, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which publishes the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

It is reported that the movement in prices in the region is in line with what has been observed at the national and European levels, and continues to be led by the upward evolution of the prices of energy products, such as oil, electricity and gas.

A

BRITISH man has been shot dead by Spanish police after an armed confrontation with them in Estepona.

Sean Hercules, 39, from Leeds, was reportedly involved in a shootout with officers who came to arrest him at his hotel, having apparently fled an earlier car crash in nearby Marbella.

A statement from the National Police stated that two firearms and

four ammunition magazines were found near where he died.

Two pistols found in the hotel room are believed to have been seized by police and a judge has opened an investigation into the fatal shooting.

tepona after being informed that Hercules had left the scene of an accident in Puerto Banus, and was reportedly armed.

Officers state that they came under fire when trying to arrest Hercules at the Autosole Aparthotel, and an exchange of gunfire ensued.

Hercules was previously sentenced to a nineyear sentence in 2001 and a six-year minimum sentence in 2006 for a robbery and shooting respectively in Leeds, according to reports.

The investigation continues.

New track running on time WORKS to complete the remodelling of Benalmadena’s Arroyo de la Honey athletics track and football field are due to be completed in December.

The project has received an investment of €1.2 million, with the council covering the bulk of it and the Junta de Andalucia providing €200,000.

The 34-year-old track will have a complete resurfacing, using modern and high quality synthetic materials.

The new grass for the football field will be synthetic, saving on maintenance and watering costs.

A net will surround the football field to prevent balls hitting track athletes, and an additional artificial grass racing lane will be added.

Jellyfish stinging tourism OWNERS of beach-based attractions are counting their losses this summer after plagues of jellyfish disrupted business.

As well as being an annoyance and risk to bathers wanting a swim, the swarms of jellyfish brought in with sea currents have been disastrous for businesses such as water parks, inflatable rides and paddle surf rentals.

Although the last time an influx of jellyfish hit Malaga Province on a similar scale was back in 2012, businesses are worried that changes in the ecosystem will prolong their stay.

President of the Tourism Council at the Andalucian Business Confederation, Miguel Sanchez, said: “I don’t know whether it’s caught the authorities unawares, but we have to take measures because it’s

FINNISH singer Anita De Coteau and Brazilian guitarist will be performing a set of beautiful fado music on Saturday night at Frame Gallery Bar Shop in Fuengirola.

Fado is Portuguese national folk music, in a similar style to flamenco and tango.

Its bluesy melodies and emotional expression make any experience of it a memorable event.

Fado comes from the Latin word fatum meaning destiny and is dramatic,

ironing and cleaning houses and offices, employing 13 people. It was successful and I sold it as a going concern before moving to Spain 11 years ago.”

Doctors on strike THE public health service on the Costa del Sol is facing industrial action this autumn because of an intensifying dispute over a lack of medical staff.

Doctors’ representatives say a shortage in community health centres was worsened over the summer, when many workers were on holiday.

They say they had to cover the patients of colleagues in July and August without locums, and there has also been a reported increase in violence against staff.

With summer over, GPs and paediatric doctors have said they can’t wait for extra staff any longer and will start strikes from October 15.

Doctors will down tools from 11am to 3pm and 4pm to 8pm, and they are also demanding more time per patient, as well as an increase in salaries to match those in the rest of Spain.

Nevertheless, emergency treatment in health centres during the strikes will be guaranteed, and minimum services are also expected to be maintained in normal surgeries.

Sources at the Junta de Andalucia said that the health service it runs has spent €25.2 million on bringing in 3,700 relief staff this summer in hospitals and health centres in the province, a 2 per cent increase on last year.

Bomb in bin AN explosive device was found at an urbanisation in Marbella on Tuesday, and police are investigating whether it’s related to terrorism or organised crime.

Officers suspect it is the latter, in an attempt to ‘settle accounts.’

The device was found on Lavanda Street in Alto de los Monteros, a secluded area of luxury villas, some of which are still under construction, by a maintenance worker.

While carrying out his duties he noticed a ‘suspicious package’ inside a bin, and immediately called the police station in Marbella.

Several officers were sent to the scene where sources say they found that the device was wrapped in two bags and had all the signs of being a bomb.

The Specialist Technicians in Deactivation of Explosives (TEDAX) were deployed from Malaga and verified that the device had all the systems of operation of a pump to detonate it from a distance.

According to sources, it was ready to explode and the team opted to detonate it in a controlled manner with all the security measures in place.

Although a full expert survey is being carried out of the remains of the bomb, the police confirmed that it contained explosives, was a home-made appliance and that apparently, due to its components, would have come from abroad.

It has been reported that, from the design of the device and its controlled explosion, it was not intended for a massive attack, but for a ‘selective action’ against someone in particular.

Revolutionising Estepona’s roads ESTEPONA Council has finished the first half of renov a tion a nd im pr ov e m e nt works to Avenida de Andalucia, and is expected to complete the job in November.

Councillor for Development, Infrastructure and Tourism, Ana Velasco, has said that the €2.3 million project will help to reduce traffic congestion in the town.

It also involves restructuring to the pipeline and telecommunications network, new paving, and the planting of 70 trees.

In addition, there will be 40 new parking spaces, nine new drinking fountains, 97 more benches and better lighting.

Ms Velasco explained that the works will help to modernise the district and make it more attractive to tourists.

ROAD REVAMP: The works will transform another part of the town.

It has been financed by a €10 million grant obtained by the council from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).

The councillor also revealed that plans are in motion to improve shopping areas to make them more accessible and to attract new entrepreneurs.

Give blood and save lives

MAYOR of Estepona, Jose Maria Garcia Urbano, has awarded a grant of €1,500 to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Carmen Coronado, to be used for the restoration of the room that houses the image of the Virgin.

Mr Urbano also disclosed that similar grants will be given to the Brotherhoods of Our Lady of Rocio, Santa Maria de los Remedios and San Isidro Labrador.

The initiative is a recognition of the importance of Estepona’s patron saint in the cultural fabric of the town.

EVERY day in Spain, dozens of people’s lives are saved by crucial blood donations.

The majority of surgeries, organ transplants and cancer treatments that are performed each day require blood transfusions.

Moreover, despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain this blood is through the generosity of the public.

Those interested in making a donation will be asked to provide some personal and medical information and documentation, to prove their identity.

The process of the blood donation itself lasts only 10 minutes in which 450ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person) It is a completely safe procedure with minimal side effects, and every precaution is taken by medical staff for the

New season starts for TIMS TIMS the international music society group has begun a new term.

The society looks forward to welcoming everyone to some exciting concerts and to help them celebrate their 30 years of providing excellent entertainment.

Sure to be a favourite event coming up is a mini ‘Last night of The Proms’ organised by ‘Project Music’ which also includes other acts and musicians on Sunday, October 7 at the Avanto (7pm).

Facelift ongoing AN €800,000 scheme to revamp an area of Fuengirola has been put out to tender by the City Council.

A period of four months will be allocated for the project earmarked for Valladolid street, close to Plaza de

Gonzalez Anaya.

This week, councillor for Infrastructures, Jose Sanchez, said the plans include the renovation of all surfaces and underground infrastructures, including, sanitation, water, electricity, telephone and

public lighting.

Twenty-one streetlights will be installed and 20 new trees planted.

Major works are being undertaken in the El Boquetillo neighbourhood where 101 lights are being changed.

Safety scheme AN investment of €180,000 is to be made improving pedestrian safety on a much-used street in Marbella.

Schools Juan Ramon Jimenez and Valdeolletas are located at Canovas del Castillo Avenue and the City Coun-

cil is keen to improve safety for them and people with disabilities.

A spokesperson said ‘the sidewalk is so narrow that pedestrian safety is at a certain risk, especially on a daily basis at the time of the departure of the schools’.

INTREPID: Pensioners will slide 720 metres.

GROUP from Age Concern, Fuengirola and Mijas are out to prove you are never too old for adventure by tackl i n g the only c r ossb o rd e r z ipline in th e world.

The intrepid pensioners will hook themselves to a steel cable and slide 720 metres across the Guadiana river from Spain into Portugal.

It is a challenge that is not for the faint hearted, with speeds of between 70 and 80 kilometres an

hour reached.

Although serious in their aims - which is to raise money for the charity - they bring their own brand of humour to the event. They call themselves ‘pensioners with a can do approach to life’ or alternatively the ‘Brave Fools!’

Steve Marshall, from Age Concern, explained: “It is a way of showing people that just because they are 60 or 70 they don’t have to sit at home watching daytime TV. “There are so many

He added that one of the biggest problems the charity sees is problems of isolation and loneliness, with people far from their homeland missing their support networks.

New Lions Club for Marbella AN English-speaking Lions International club has now been formed in Marbella.

Founded 101 years ago, the international organisation operates in 200 countries worldwide, boasting 46,000 clubs with 1.4 million members.

It was founded by entrepreneurs as an organisation to improve the lives of those in their local communities, as well as people around the world.

The clubs promote a wide range of activities, including golf tournaments and cultural events and operate second-hand shops in order to raise money for charitable organisations. In the Costa del Sol, these have included raising money for Ciudad de los Niños, anti-AIDS and environmental charities and food banks. The organisation has also directly helped several local schools and the Red Cross. Funds from the international organisation are generally focused on alleviating suffering in developing countries.

The Lions Club annual golf tournament in 2015, raised enough to

buy 100,000 measles vaccinations around the world. This year it was held on March 31 in Mijas.

Gerhard Steinruck has become President of the new Marbella club.

He highly recommends becoming a member: “Everyone has their own personal interests which they can promote at the meetings. It’s an excellent thing for both actively working and retired people to get into; it’s a good way to invest their time.

“You can make new friends and business contacts, as well as meeting people who speak your language. It’s also very sociable, with many activities which are all for a good cause.

“We have meetings twice a month to discuss new initiatives to raise money, and we sometimes go on excursions together. Members tend to devote between one to two hours a week, but those on the Executive Committee have to contribute substantially more time.”

Hotel at the heart A SMALL hotel is to be opened in the historic centre of Mijas Pueblo.

According to planning councillor, Andres Ruiz, a house dating from 1840 on the Plaza de la Constitucion in the heart of the village, will be redeveloped at a cost of €354,000.

It will include four apartments, a private residence and two shops.

The news comes alongside healthy hotel occupancy reports in Mijas.

Tourism fall OFFICIAL figures show that the Costa del Sol has seen a fall in the number of tourists in July for the first time since 2012.

This has been blamed on the reemergence of cheaper destinations like Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia, which had previously suffered in popularity due to safety fears.

A rise in the number of Spanish tourists visiting the Costa del Sol has prevented an even worse picture.

Tourism professionals are calling for fresh marketing strategies to attract back British visitors, particularly as other countries like Bulgaria and Croatia are also gaining ground.

Metal Concert postponed BAD news for rock fans as the Metallica Tributo Concert at the Benalmadena Auditorium due to take place tomorrow (Saturday) has had to be postponed.

The problem with an open air venue is that if it should rain, then not only will it be uncomfortable for the audience, but it is potentially dangerous for the artists and stage crew as water and electricity don’t mix too well!

The organisers had just added Rock Chick Tina Hall (the former actress from Alhaurin who appeared in La Voz Spain) to the bill to appear alongside Metal Gods and Metallica Tributo, so keep visiting the Costa del Disco website for details of the rearranged date.

Old fashioned fun for charity FOR those who have pondered as to what a Beetle Drive is, all will be revealed in Marbella on October 20 when the Rotary Club MarbellaGuadalmina attempts to set a Guinness World Record.

Officials from Guinness World Records will be at the Palacio de Congresos to count the number of participants in this Beetle Drive as the organisers hope to beat the current world record of 252 competitors.

This is a strange little game which can be played by people of any age and simply consists of four players armed with a single dice. Their job is to complete a hand drawn beetle by

starting with a six and then drawing 42 further parts of the insect based on numbers rolled.

For this event, there will be an entry fee of €10 per person or €30 for a table of four and the proceeds will go to AFA - Asoc.de Familiares de Enfermos de Alzheimer’s in Marbella and other local charities.

There will be prizes as well as food, drinks and various stalls so turn up for some old fashioned fun and help those who need assistance.

The Association relies on the proceeds from their social events for the vital welfare work aiding both serving and former members of the Royal Air Force and their families.

Tickets covering the cost of a threecourse meal with wine, drinks on arrival and a wide range of musical entertainment followed by fireworks cost €75 per person (with €25 going straight to the charities),

Interview An interview with… Jill Leonard Ali Meehan of costa women.com chats to Jill Leonard who started Local Fire & Weather Watch on Facebook in 2012.

The groups now have more than 22,000 members in their geographically based groups around Spain warning of fires or adverse weather conditions.

Jill, tell us about your life before Spain Born and bred in Manchester, my husband was in the police for nearly 30 years and I was the Area Manager for a recruitment company.

When my husband retired in 1996 we both decided neither of us were born to be cold! We thought we would give it two years in Spain and see how we got on. Here we are 22 years later...

Now you head up an amazing groups of Facebook pages - Local Fire and Weather Watch - how did that start?

It was created just a few

Helping the Costas for 6 years days after the massive fire near Coin, of 2012. The one thing I found during the three days of the fire, particularly on the first night and following day, was that information was flying all over Facebook pages and groups.

At one time I had at least 10 tabs open, all with varying degrees of information; some of it correct and some of it pure speculation. That in itself was enough to prompt me into trying to offer a more organised method of reporting factual information.

What are the objectives of the Group?

To provide factual information from both Twitter and the members based locally, this allowing the members to make informed decisions, ie to evacuate or not. To provide what the rules and regulations are regarding bonfires etc during summer. To provide advice, via the authorities, about safeguarding your property against fire/floods.

And since you launched,

other Groups have sprung up too. Where can we find out about ones in our area?

We have a page showing all the links to each group, we also have a photo gallery page and chat group that gives them too. We cover from the border with Portugal, right along the Mediterranean coast to the French border, the Balearics and the Canaries. All the groups differ in size and make up of members. By far the biggest groups are Malaga Province and Alicante/Valencia provinces with well over 11,000 members in each.

As we watch Twitter it is not surprising; the most fires occur in these regions.

TALKS: Discussions were held at the Ministry of Health.

THE Spanish government is devising a strategy aimed at reducing the country’s suicide death toll.

Between 3,500 and 4,000 people a year take their own lives in Spain according to the National Statistics Institute, with another 8,000 people needing hospital treatment after failed suicide attempts.

The death toll is more than double that seen on the roads.

Just before she quit her post, then Health Minister Carmen Montón, met with health professionals last week in order to collect information about the problem.

The idea is to put in place a plan to deal with the problem which causes so much pain and distress that it dwarfs other causes of death but seems to be little talked about.

The Health Ministry points out that there are 65 suicides for every death from gender violence, 11 for each homicide and two for every road death.

Road renewal WORK has started on the remodelling of the main road into the centre of Fuengirola from Mijas Pueblo and the A-7, towards the market.

A second stretch of the Avenida Alcalde Clemente Diaz is getting a makeover after the section nearest

the market and train station was relandscaped last year.

The latest project will see €1.5 million spent on the next stretch, towards the A-7.

Road closures and diversions will be in place ‘for three months.’

Lions are high on the hog

THE President of the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club, Margaret Bobowicz, recently hosted a fundraising evening in her garden, raising €750 for the Club.

This being the 20th Anniversary Year for the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club, Margaret started off her presidential year with a hog roast.

Margaret thanked everyone for coming and for supporting an evening of fun and laughter enjoyed by the volunteers, friends and members alike.

Their next major event, celebrating their 20th Anniversary President’s dinner, is tomorrow (Saturday), at the Treetops restaurant in El Chaparral Golf. With Ca-

va and canapes on arrival followed by a three-course dinner with half a bottle of wine, soft drinks and water. Entertainment by the Soul and Motown singer Randy Corwood, coupled with good food and friendship, it will be an evening not to be missed.

SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the leader of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, have met to discuss a series of initiatives seen as reversing some of the cuts that were imposed by the previous Partido Popular (PP) government.

Among the agreements are free school textbooks for families on low incomes, a reduction of IVA (VAT) on a number of day-to-day essentials such as food, and the self-employed below the national minimum wage to be exempt from income tax retentions.

They also agreed to consider increasing income tax for those earning more than €140,000 a year (or €10,000 monthly), which Iglesias believes will, “not hurt these people too much.”

it’s not known if the cuts in IVA will include reducing the lower rate of 4 per cent or increasing the number of items that can be included in this bracket in the future, that currently attract rates of 10 or 21 per cent.

Iglesias has said that these agreements are policies that both parties can support and has lessened the chances of the opposition forcing an early general election; the next one due in 2020.

The meeting comes as the two have buried the hatchet from 2016 when Pablo Iglesias and Podemos prevented Sanchez’s previous attempt to replace former prime minister Mariano Rajoy.

Inheritance tax scrapping proposal SPAIN’S centre-right party Ciudadanos (C’s) has announced proposals for a zero rate of inheritance tax. They have asked the PSOE government to scrap the ‘death tax’ between parents and children and spouses altogether, and drastically reduce it for other family members.

Because of the current rates of tax in Spain, 2017 saw a record number of people actually refusing their inheritances - believed to be one in 10 - as the tax must be paid in advance of any assets being transferred to the beneficiaries; and they only have six months to pay that tax. The C’s wanted that period to be increased to at least one year.

The party led by Albert Rivera says the tax should be reduced to zero where the main beneficiary is a child or a parent, spouse or partner and where the inheritance is also their current permanent home.

The tax exemption would additionally apply to other distant relatives where the beneficiary in question does not own a home of their own.

Zero tax rates would apply to inheritances of under €1 million, with the tax-free threshold for other relatives reduced to €125,000 and €350,000, depending how far removed they are from the deceased.

IT seems to me that over the years, as the number of TV channels at our disposal have multiplied, the quality of the programmes has diminished commensurately.

I remember ‘the good old days’ when there were two then three channels, and it was a toss-up what we should watch, such was the quality.

And with no video recorders back in the early 60’s, it meant that we missed some top notch shows. We were spoilt for choice.

Even the commercials were brilliant.

Now I spend all my time switching channels in the hope of finding something that is worth swopping 60 minutes of my life for, mostly in vain.

The Princess tells me that I have become a grumpy old man and I hope she is right. The programme Grumpy Old Men was one I could relate to and one I still miss.

It was portrayed as a comedy, but as far as I was concerned it was a show that seriously debated some of life’s important issues with straight talking. I

was a great fan.

I felt that most of the participants made valid points and they often had me nodding my head like the Churchill bulldog in complete agreement.

Even then it seems I was well on the road to becoming a miserable old git.

My latest rant concerns the new series of X Factor.

Now this is not a favourite of mine at the best of times, but I shake my head in disbelief at the depths to which this programme has plunged.

options for his judging panel, because now we have Robbie Williams, well okay, I guess he’s earned qualification.

Although I could not make out why he appeared to still be wearing pyjamas last Saturday.

His wife Ayda who is now a judge on XF because? Oh yes, because she is Robbie Williams’ wife.

And Louis Tomlinson who was a third place finalist on the show with the band One Direction back in 2010. Not a winner mark you, but third.

So there they were, our judging panel - Our Robbie, disrespectful as ever with his feet up on the desk; Ayda who when she stood up to make a point, showed off legs that went all the way up to Barcelona - although I have no real problem with that. And Louis sitting next to Simon, could have been mistaken for his grandson, and who I would take far more seriously if his voice did not sound as if it is still waiting to break.

Then out of the blue, Robbie produced his dad, who took his place on the panel. What was that about?

What’s next; Simon’s second cousin’s next door neighbour ’s baby sitter?

Give me strength.

BALANCED: A little of what you fancy can be good for you.

Superfoods to keep you healthy IN our 20’s we seem to be able to eat as much as we want (within reason) without having to worry too much about our weight.

But as we get that bit older it gets increasingly difficult for many people to keep those extra kilos off.

The reason is that our bodies burn less energy while resting once we pass 40, which can result in weight gain. But this is not to say it is inevitable the old adage ‘a little of what you fancy’ holds true today as much as it ever did.

There is certainly no problem in treating yourself to a meal out, especially here on the Costa where there is so much choice - life would be a lot poorer without sampling the multitude of cuisines available within a short distance.

But there are a selection of ‘superfoods’ available, which can help you keep healthy as part of a balanced diet. You could try: Oats - containing beta-

glucans, oats are a soluble fibre that can help lower the unwanted form of cholesterol, and contains antioxidants unique to the grain to protect against the build-up of plaque on artery walls. Eating just 3g of oats every day is enough to reduce total cholesterol by 5 to 10 per cent, say researchers.

Cherries - the fruit is useful in combating several conditions including gout and arthritis as they are a rich source of the antioxidant anthocyanin.

Introduce a dozen cherries with yoghurt or seeds or drink a glass of unsweetened juice three or four times a week to ensure you receive the beneficial vitamins.

Almonds - the benefits range from improved blood-sugar levels to reducing cholesterol. Make sure you eat plain varieties not sugared or salted versions.

Oily fish - Omega 3 fats in salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines and herring can help lower heart rate and

blood pressure, and reduce the risk of irregular heartbeat. For optimal benefits, consume at least four times a week.

Soy - Isoflavones in soy beans have been linked to lowering cholesterol, increasing bone density in post-menopausal women and improving male fertility.

Consume fresh edamame beans or soy beans in cans two to three times week, but be cautious as soy can affect hormone levels and over-consumption is not recommended for premenopausal women.

Tomatoes - an excellent source of the antioxidant lycopene which protects against the formation and spread of cancer cells as well as protecting arteries.

Research has shown that drinking 150ml of tomato juice after 20 minutes of exercise offers protection against prostate, lung and stomach cancers and heart disease. Lycopene in tomatoes is more easily absorbed by the body when it is cooked.

TOMATOES - they are ubiquitous in Spanish food, tasty and provide a splash of colour - and they are also good for you.

Research has proven that eating a tomato-rich diet can cut the risk of heart disease by a quarter, perhaps helping explain why the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in

the fruit has long been known to be particularly healthy.

It is believed that the antioxidant lycopene, which gives tomatoes their red colour, holds the answer to a healthy heart, although researchers did say that whilst the powerful antioxidant appeared to shield against heart disease, more studies

are needed to be certain it is the lycopene and not something else that is providing protection.

The beneficial effects of tomatoes are boosted in the Spanish diet by being combined with other foods like olive oil and fish - also known to be particularly good for you.

www.thelittlegeranium.com IT’S not every day we get asked to do a wedding outside the restaurant but recently some lovely Norwegian clients asked me if we would cater for their special day after eating several times at The Little Geranium. They told me that they had never expected or experienced food like ours on this coastline and it inspired them to get married over here rather than in Norway!

We were flattered, but it was a Saturday evening and we were already fully booked when they asked me. I would have to call in some favours and one of them was to ask

my wife Michele to run the event which was to be held in Puerto Banus in a magnificent eight-bedroom designer villa with breathtaking views of La Concha mountain.

The other favour I called came from Salvador, my friend and business colleague at El Torreon restaurant in La Cala. He lent me three fabulous waiting staff.

An outside event takes a lot of planning and a wedding is a seriously important event that we wanted to make feel more than special.

A little short on chefs for the prep of the wedding, I asked Michele : “Could you make the dessert?”

Now Michele is no chef! She is an excellent ballerina, dance/pilates teacher but when it comes to cooking I wouldn’t say it was a strong point!

However she was on ‘Come Dine with Me’ a couple of years ago (not really a cooking show!), she didn’t win, she came second, but I know if she puts her mind to it, she can cook.

“Sure I will have a go,” she said. The bride and groom had chosen a panna cotta for

dessert which should be creamy, smooth and blancmange like. It can be flavoured with anything really, but usually coffee or vanilla.

The words panna cotta are Italian and mean cooked cream. This was going to be a vanilla panna cotta with fresh berries celebrating the delicious summer berries we have over here. So we created this simple recipe with three or four ingredients.

I got in late that night after work and opened the fridge. Wow! They look amazing I said! It was simple she said, you should write a book based on three or four ingredients like this recipe, quick, easy and delicious.

Michele was very proud of herself and as I pushed my fork into the panna cotta it was surprisingly rich, creamy and smooth, packed with vanilla seeds and cutting through the smooth lushness was the slightly tarty taste of the blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. It had all the right wobble too, I was impressed.

“Not too sweet,” I said. “Exactly as it should be,” she said, “creamy but not oversweet you get the sweetness from the fruit.” Has Michele had a brain transplant

• Squeeze the water out of the gelatine and now add it to the cream mix • Finally pass the mixture through a sieve into a clean jug • Pour the mixture into little moulds and add the raspberries to each, allow to setflat in the fridge.It will need at least 6 hours maybe more.

Best to make it the day before.

250 ml thick cream 50 ml of milk 4 flat tablespoons of caster sugar 2 leaves of gelatine 2 vanilla pods with seeds removed a few drops vanilla essence 12 raspberries 6 small sprigs of fresh mint for garnish

For the fruit

• Cut blueberries and strawberries in halves but leave the raspberries and blueberries whole • Wash in cold water in a colander • Tip the fruits into a bowl and add the sugar and mix well in.

• Add the liquor and stir gently in • Allow to sit in the fridge for at least 6 hours.

Ingredients for compote of berries 1 punnet of blackberries 1 punnet of raspberries 1 punnet of strawberries 1 punnet blueberries 4 heaped tablespoons of caster sugar 4 tablespoons of Cointreau or other similar liquor

• Soak the gelatine leaves in cold water for between 5 and 10 mins until soft • Warm up the thick cream in a saucepan and add the milk and the sugar • Stir well until the cream has dissolved all the sugar (about 5 mins) • Add the vanilla seeds and the vanilla essence and keep stirring

PANNA COTTA: Rich, creamy and smooth.

• Turn the panna cottas out of the moulds. (I use a blow torch on the base and then ease out with a small knife.) You can also use a pan of warm water dipping the base of the panna cotta to ease them out.

• Place them onto the presentation plate ( easier on one plate in centre of the table) • Spoon the fruits around and garnish with fresh mint sprigs Note … You can drain off the fruit liquid a few hours before serving and then reduce it down in a saucepan.

Then when cool you can use this to dress the fruits which will give it shine and more flavour.

In fact, La Tomatina is just one of many festivals in the country that celebrate food, wine and drink, some big and famous, but many small and highlighting regional dishes and beverages.

At the moment (starting tomorrow (Saturday) and finishing on September 22, the festival of San Mateo is centre stage. It is a mixture between a celebration of the mediaeval period and the wine harvest.

It has its origins in the celebration held in honour of the town of LogroĂąo in the 12th century. The city had the privilege of holding an annual fair and so became an important commercial centre. These fairs became more important and more frequent.

During the celebration of these fairs the festive and entertaining character of them gained in importance and so wine was introduced to proceedings and became

Eat your carrots and greens CARROTS could be an important weapon in the war against prostate cancer, scientists have claimed.

A study led by Professor Norman Maitland at the University of York says a diet rich in Vitamin A could be the key to beating the disease as it makes it more treatable.

The researchers have discovered that retenoic acid, a chemical made from Vitamin A, can reduce the ability of the cancer to invade surrounding tissue.

Vitamin A can be found in foods like carrots, sweet potatoes and leafy green vegetables such as kale.

Good eye sight is crucial for performing at school, so this month, we wanted to answer two important questions which parents often ask us.

Q. How can I teach my child to look after their eyes?

A. This is always a worry and you need to educate them so they can make the right choices even when you’re not there. Here are seven things to teach them • Never poke things into your eyes, not even fingers.

• Never play with strong chemicals, like washingup liquid, washing powder or bleach. Getting these in your eyes can be very dangerous.

• Never throw sand or dirt in anyone’s face.

• Never look straight at the sun - not even through dark glasses. The bright light from the sun can burn your retina.

• If an optician suggests you need to wear glasses - wear them!

• Always wear sunglasses which block out the sun’s harmful rays in bright sunshine.

• Always wear safety glasses when you handle harmful substances.

Q. How can I tell if my child is struggling to see?

A. Look out for signs such as sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes, being clumsy, or complaining of headaches and take them for a test right away. Also, take them to the optician for a full eye test every year from the age of three, they don’t need to be able to read to have one.

Skin cancer awareness week MORE than 250 dermatologists evaluated thousands of Spaniards across 49 provinces in a bid to detect and prevent skin cancer.

The initiative was part of the 2018 melanoma campaign organised by S p a i n ’s A c a d e m y o f Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV), in which 33 other EU countries also participated.

A c c o r d i n g t o A E D V, around 4,000 melanomas are diagnosed each year in Spain and believe around 80 per cent of these could have been avoided if adequate sun protection was used.

Cases are more common in those aged over 50, particularly as sun protection and the dama g i n g s u n ’s r a y s w e r e less known about a few decades ago, but there are more and more cases of young people being diagnosed due to unhealthy habits of sun exposure.

H o w e v e r, t h e g o o d news is that 80 per cent of melanomas are cured with surgery and early diagnosis means it is unlikely to have spread to other parts of the body.

During the week-long campaign earlier this y e a r, specialists analysed moles and offered free consultations to check people’s skin.

Different activities were also arranged to remind people of the importance of protecting the s k i n f r o m t h e s u n ’s harmful rays and in checking moles for any changes. Remember if you have an existing mole that has changed shape, colour or size, you should get it checked.

Also, look for new moles, spots or lesions that are red, can bleed and are not healing.

Don’t blame the messenger

“There is no such thing as an independent Press in America, unless it is in the country towns.

There is not one of you who dare to express an honest opinion. If you express an honest opinion, you know beforehand it would never appear in print. We are tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are intellectual prostitutes.”

It isn’t fake news to concede that media reflects the opinions of its owners. The American owners of the Daily Mail wish not to be reminded that Viscount Rothermere, who pioneered popular journalism, ardently endorsed Adolf Hitler for many years.

the last four weeks.”

A seminar specifically charged with giving the floor to international journalists was supercharged by candid exchanges unlikely to appear in print or on TV screens.

One delegate remarked: “There is no such thing as neutral journalism”. Another explained that journalists are now ‘soldiers of communication’, with the emphasis being on the term soldiers. An erudite delegate reminded attending journalists, editors and owners that ‘the internet and digital media are the battlefields of the 21st century.’

Paul Craig Roberts, US Assistant Secretary didn’t mince his words: “The United States no longer has a media. It has a propaganda ministry for the military/security complex, the neoconservatives, and the Israel lobby. And the idiot Americans sit in front of the TV and absorb the propaganda, and they read the New York Times and think that they are sophisticated and in the know.”

Fernando Casado, Spanish Analyst and Legal Expert share my experience. “Some journalists, who are actually quite open-minded and are aware of the real situation, have no choice but to write what is expected of them by their editors in order to make both ends meet and have a decent salary”.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

HELLO again! Well we are now going to have a break from verbs. What? I hear you say. You mean there are other things in Spanish apart from verbs? Indeed there are, and although I am feeling fairly optimistic at the moment, (don’t ask me why) this subject is actually about being negative.

Yes, our subject today is being negative, but not just that boring old ‘no’ that we can place before verbs to turn them around. ‘Tengo,’ (I have) ‘no tengo,’ (I don’t have) and so on. Instead we are going to look at the Spanish for never, no one or nobody, and nothing.

The Spanish for ‘never’ is ‘nunca’, and we will use this to illustrate how these negative words function in sentences. Basically, you have two options, you can either start a phrase or sentence with them as follows: ‘¡Nunca he visto una cosa igual!’ (‘I’ve never seen anything like it!’) ‘Nunca’ in this position sounds emphatic, and so lends itself to this kind of exclamation. If we want to use ‘nunca’ less emphatically we have to put it later in the sentence but create what we call in English a double-negative.

‘No he visto eso nunca.’ We’re back to the use of ‘no’ at the beginning and if we try to translate word for word we end up with ‘I

haven’t never seen that,’ which of course is not at all correct in English. In Spanish though, it is the principal way we express our negatives, with ‘no’ before the verb and the other negative word later in the sentence.

Exactly the same thing occurs with ‘no one’ which is ‘nadie’. We can say ‘Nadie vino,’ (Nobody or no one came) or we can express exactly the same idea with ‘no vino nadie,’ which just sounds slightly less emphatic.

‘Nothing’ is ‘nada’ and we can illustrate this with a very common phrase that is oftentaught as an item of ‘survival Spanish’ - ‘no pasa nada’. Again if we were to be horribly literal we would translate this as ‘nothing doesn’t happen’, but of course it should have justthe one negative in English, giving us

‘nothing happens’. The phrase could mean exactly that, as in the sentence: ‘Nothing happens in this village.’ ‘En este pueblo no pasa nada.’

However, it is far more commonly heard as a response to some kind of apology or expression of discomfort from another person, the equivalent of our ‘don’t worry’ or ‘nothing’s the matter’. I say: ‘Perdón,’ (Excuse me) and you reply ‘No pasa nada.’

We can also use ‘nada’ in some contexts to mean ‘at all’, as in ‘no me gusta nada,’ (‘I don’t like it at all’). If we want to be even more emphatic about our dislike of something, we can also say ‘¡No me gusta en absoluto!’ This sounds positive but in fact it is a negative phrase. I can’t think how to translate that ex-

tra emphasis, other than by becoming suddenly Irish, ‘I don’t like it at all, at all, at all.’

Another little negative thing you might like to know is ‘neither … nor’ which is ‘ni …. ni’, although we don’t always express ourselves the same way in English. For example: ‘No me gusta ni la carne ni los huevos’, (I don’t like meat or eggs - ‘I like neither meat nor eggs’). I do like eggs by the way, it was just an example.

If we focus on the most common, everyday uses of these negative words though, it is remarkable that they are frequently used entirely on their own - often as responses. ‘¿Has estado en Nueva York?’ ‘Nunca.’

(Have you been to New York? Never). ‘¿Quién vino a la reunión?’ ‘Nadie.’ (Who came to the meeting? No one). ‘¿Qué te pasa?’ ‘Nada.’ (‘What’s the matter with you?’

‘Nothing’). ‘Nada’ is the ultimate one-worder and is used in many ways. Sometimes it abbreviates, ‘de nada’ (‘not at all’). ‘Muchas gracias.’ ‘Nada.’ Sometimes it is used at the beginning of long explanations (for some strange reason). A reporter says: ‘Cuéntanos qué paso,’(‘Tell us what happened,’) and the interviewee starts his long detailed account with: ‘Nada. El avión se despegó y ...’ (‘Nothing. The aeroplane took off and ...’)

Finally, you can finish off a conversation with ‘pues, nada’ (‘well, nothing’) which can also be abbreviated to ‘nada.’ Nada. Hasta la semana que viene.

Malaga people love dogs MALAGA would appear to be the region with the highest number of animal lovers in Andalucia.

Some 620,839 pets are currently registered in the province, of which 548,804 (88.4 per cent) are dogs.

By comparison there are only 63,169 cats registered, although cat owners are less likely to register their animals, so there may be considerably more.

Third on the list come ferrets, with the authorities knowing about 2,587.

Masters stars in Marbella

THE Spaniards Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Albert Costa, the Russian Marat Safin, the Croatian Goran Ivanisevic, and the Frenchmen Sebastien Grosjean and Yannick Noah are the star names competing in the Senior Masters Cup 2018.

It will take place on September 28 and 29 at the Puente Romano Hotel Tennis Club.

The third edition of the Senior Masters Cup presents the best line up yet, with three former world number ones and six Grand Slam champions.

The tournament is now firmly placed as one of the Costa del Sol’s sporting and social events of the year.

The tournament will begin on Friday 28th with the two semi-finals. The first one, from 6pm, will be played between Marat Safin and Goran Ivanisevic.

At 8pm it will be the turn for the Spanish duel starring Carlos Moya, reigning champion, and Juan Carlos Ferrero.

The winners of both semi-finals will face each other in the grand final on Saturday at 7.30pm. An hour and a half before, at 6pm, Yannick Noah and Sebastian Grosjean will face Albert Costa and one of the players eliminated from the competition in an exhibition doubles match.

Moyá is returning to defend his title after defeating a combative John McEnroe in the last edition. Moya won’t have it easy. The Mallorcan may stay in shape to keep up with Rafael Nadal, who he trains with and accompanies for most of the season, but the competition is high.

Ferrero is probably the toughest contender for the Mallorcan’s title given his proven skill on clay. He is a winner at Roland Garros and the Valencian is kept in very good shape as a coach of new world tennis stars. His most recent pupil was the German Sasha Zverev.

The spectacle and pure talent will come from the hand of Russian Marat Safin and Croatian Goran Ivanisevic. Both Safin and Ivanisevic have the quality to ask serious questions of the Spaniards.

Albert Costa, who serves as tournament director, Sebastien Grosjean and the charismatic Yannick Noah all bring their own particular skills and talent to the event.

The French tennis player will be the star of Saturday

night in the VIP Lounge where he will give a concert.
