Hailed a hero A FUNDRAISING Spanish runner bidding to enter the record books was hailed a hero as he arrived on the Costa del Sol. Fernando Plaza, 43, is aiming to complete the 3,872 kilometre Transiberico Challenge, a gruelling circuit of the Iberian Peninsula in 38 back-to-back stages.

He is completing an average of 100 kilometres running or cycling per day and will enter the Guinness Book of Records when he reaches the finish line in his home city of Cordoba tomorrow (Saturday), having worn through a dozen pairs of running shoes.

He is raising money expected to run into the tens of thousands for a children’s physiotherapy centre there, and explained: “All the money donated will be invested in a proven rehabilita-

Brexit could be good news for criminals IN what is really an extraordinary situation of cutting off your nose to spite your face, EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said that with Brexit the UK would have to give up the European Arrest Warrant provisions.

In a clear example of duckspeak (from Orwell’s 1984) he explained that it would not be fair for Britain to remain in the system because it intended to leave the EU’s court and free movement scheme.

Figures published by the National Crime Agency show that the 27 EU members requested the arrest of 14,279 suspects known to be on British soil in 2015/6 whilst in the same period, Britain had asked for 241 suspects to be apprehended of which 150 were actually arrested.

It may well be that there will be some special agreement entered into between the UK government and the European Union but, as time hurries by and bureaucracy inevitably becomes involved, the future for ease of arrest and ex-

tradition becomes more questionable.

From one point of view, Britain doesn’t appear to have too many identified criminals within the EU, although some communities may suggest that there are quite a few who come into Spain for example under the radar, but it must be quite worrying to consider that 14,000 plus suspected criminals (528 for each member state) could potentially remain in the UK thanks to the EU decision.

Whatever happens with regards to the Irish border, it is clear that it cannot be policed 24 hours a day along the entire 310 miles and this also means that Irish criminals could easily flee

into Northern Ireland, and vice versa, secure in the knowledge that they will be safer if no agreement is in place.

This is not the only potential threat to Britain’s security as currently it belongs to Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency whose main goal is to help achieve a safer Europe for the benefit of all EU citizens.

They do this by assisting the European Union’s Member States in their fight against serious international crime and terrorism.

It is not a large operation, does not have the power to initiate investigations, cannot arrest anyone, is not affiliated to Interpol, which has a completely different role, but is vital to the protection of member states against organised crime, money laundering and terrorism.

Analysis is at the core of their activities and Europol employs around 100 criminal analysts who are among the best trained in Europe and it is they who constantly update European police agency knowledge based on the flow of information that is trans-

What is clear however is that Europol is involved in over 10,000 cross-border investigations each year and basically is positioned in many cases to take a piece of information from one country and by computer analysis match it with information from one or more other countries in order to predict or solve crimes.

It is possible to work with Europol outside of the EU, but this would be on an associated basis rather than being one of the decision making partners in this important European policing operation.

From 2009 until 2018, the head of Europol was Sir Robert Wainwright a former MI5 officer who could no longer remain in his post as Britain has to leave the organisation.

So there you have it, in an ideal world, arrangements will be made to ensure a very speedy transition so that foreign criminals are still brought to account for crimes they may have committed in one country and need to be returned.

In a worst case scenario however, the British public, in particular, could face greater threats from organised crime and terrorist attacks.

Dredging is first port of call for navy FIRE READY: The new fire engine was warmly received by Fuengirola’s firefighters.

MAYOR of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, accompanied by her deputy, Ana Mata, has visited the town’s fire station to announce the acquisition of a new vehicle.

The truck is equipped with a 32-metre long ladder, with a reach of 10 floors, and is the result of a €1.5 million investment.

Fire Chief, Francisco Leon, said that the engine can be considered the best of its kind in Spain, and has been manufactured especially for Fuengirola.

Mayor Mula said: “To provide the Fire Prevention Service with all the technical equipment that it needs is fun-

damental for us.

“This vehicle is very necessary for a town like ours, and it has been produced and designed especially to meet our needs.”

The truck will be provided on a lease basis, and will greatly improve the working conditions of the firemen.

THE port of Cabopino in Marbella has begun to dredge its banks to clear the way for the passage of large ships.

Approval has been granted for the long-awaited works to the mouth of the port, and the build-up of sand has been frustrating for the navy for a number of years.

Its activity through the waters had been constricted due to the narrowing of the channel, preventing the

passage of larger vessels.

The dredging is expected to last between a week and 10 days, and the sand that is extracted will be used to regenerate the nearby beach.

The navy itself is carrying out the works, but this is not the only marina with such problems.

La Bajadilla is also taking action, as its fishing fleet has been forced to dock at Estepona or La Caleta de Velez.

Roca’s hunting spoils go on sale THE court that ruled on the infamous ‘Malaya’ trial has authorised the sale of 98 hunting trophies, for a total of €21,050.

The items belong to infamous ex-councillor for Town Planning, Juan Antonio Roca, who spent 12 years in prison for his part in the Marbella Council corruption scandal.

Any money accrued will be used to pay Roca’s civil liabilities in the Malaya case and other judicial proceedings.

Mr Roca’s hunting spoils include an elephant’s head, a hippopotamus head, as well as a variety of stuffed animals, including lions.

It is estimated that between 1997 and 2002 Mr Roca spent more than €29,000 on hunting safaris in Zimbabwe,Kyrgyzstan and South Africa.

It docked in the Puerto Deportivo de Fuengirola on Saturd a y, a n d w i l l b e o p e n to the public until Sunday.

Fuengirola represents the start of a summer tour for the

Nao Santa Maria, which will see it dock at Valencia, Barcelona, Alicante, and Algeciras in Spain, before heading on to France.

I n O c t o b e r, t h e s h i p will embark on a voyage across the Atlantic to visit Puerto Rico, Cartagena and Havana.

It is a replica of one of the most famous ships in history, which sank after hitting reefs

off the Haitian coast on Christmas Day, 1492.

This new version was built by the Nao Victoria Foundation, in collaboration with Huelva Council and the Cajasol Foundation.

It was designed to be as identical to the original as possible, weighing 200 tons, and measuring 29 metres long and eight metres wide.

Myramar takes over MYRAMAR, which runs a shopping centre in Fuengirola and a retail park in adjacent Mijas Costa, has bought the 49.5 per cent of the shares which it didn’t own from a US investment fund.

The move allows Myramar to carry out more investment on the sites.

The company also manages the Muelle Uno mall in Malaga’s port.

Jelly good show THE Costa del Sol’s first throws of real summer weather coincided with the arrival of an enormous swarm of jellyfish.

Thousands of stinging Pelagia Noctiluca washed up onto beaches along the Costa del Sol, from Nerja all the way to Benalmadena.

The appearance of jellyfish on the shores of this province is not rare or isolated, although the invertebrates are normally small in size.

Beach cleaning services across the coastline used tractors and boats to remove the jellyfish from the shore and the bathing water.

CHEQUE MATES: Mayor Muñoz receives the funds which will benefit the city.

€12 million sweetener after Malaya crisis MARBELLA Council has received compensation of €12 million to use for public services and facilities in the city, after losses suffered from fraud in the infamous ‘Malaya Case.’

For a number of years it looked as though all the money and assets recovered from the convicted ex-councillor Juan Antonio Roca would be passed directly to the Spanish government.

However, a court ruling in 2013 gave Marbella Council the opportunity to ar-

gue its case, which it did persuasively.

Some of the property seized from the scandal, including the Finca de la Caridad and buildings adjacent to the Costa del Sol Hospital, are also likely to be handed over to the council.

“Today we have €12 million more in the accounts of the city council for the citizens of Marbella and San Pedro, and we are very pleased to have achieved it,” said Mayor Ángeles Muñoz as she received the cheque on behalf of Marbella on Friday.

Touristmolinos up and running TORREMOLINOS Council has installed a new Foreign Residents Department in the town centre.

Although the office, which also houses the tourist and culture departments, was opened 18 months ago, this department has only recently been inaugurated.

The new offices in Plaza de Andalucia, which are open between 9am and 1.30pm, will provide help and support on a range of issues to expats in Spain.

Currently, the service is available in just English and Spanish, but it will soon respond to enquiries in French, Italian and German.

The foreign residents department’s administrator, Maria Jose Carmona Marquez, said: “We have many ideas, but we hope people will tell us what they need because we are here to serve them.”

The department is considering a number of initiatives to aid expat integration, including an English language news and information programme on Torremolinos Television.

Interpreter services are planned at police stations and local health centres, and foreign residents can also volunteer to help create an extensive service.

According to the January 2018 census poll, more than 150 nationalities live in Torremolinos and they make up 25 per cent of the population.

Hospital gets €1.4 million bed bonanza

CLC WORLD RESORTS & HOTELS announced last week at a corporate event attended by the mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado, that it is starting work on several projects with a combined total of €60 million.

One of those is Santa Barbara Heights, which includes 50 luxury residences and will receive an investment of €18 million, generating 300 jobs in Mijas.

In addition, the company is working on a project of 170 residences with innovative sports facilities and shops facing the sea.

The group, whose first holiday development opened 35 years ago, hopes to start offering this project for sale in the next few months.

Market sets out stall

THE Costa del Sol hospital in Marbella is currently in the process of replacing the furniture in all its wards, including electrically operated beds, armchairs and tables.

The project is costing €1.4 million and the old items will be recycled.

€60 million boost for Mijas

It began at the end of May and is expected to be completed soon, but has not affected the normal working of the hospital.

Ana Isabel Gonzalez, provincial delegate for Equality, Health and Social Policies, said: “The new equipment offers

more comfort, safety and mobility in the rooms for patients and their families, and also for the hospital staff.

“The result will be a considerable improvement for everyone.”

The new beds can be adjusted to a variety of positions, making it easi-

er for doctors and nurses to carry out operations and treatments.

Hospital managers are training staff on how to move and operate the new furniture, and have also produced explanatory videos which can be watched by patients on the TVs in their rooms.

THE new San Luis gastro-market in Estepona, which was supposed to open last Christmas, finally made its debut this week.

The need to carry out more repairs on the building, which is the town’s main market hall, meant that there have been delays.

Extra reinforcement work has increased the budget for the development from €600,000 to €1.6 million.

Some 75 new jobs are expected to be created in the project.

PASSED: Councillors met to discuss the measures yesterday.

Charity grants approved COUNCILLORS in Torremolinos have backed plans to grant some €65,000 in aid to a project which provides food to those in need.

Members of the local authority voted through the plans at a meeting yesterday (Thursday). The subsidy granted to the Emaus social dining room is part of a broader initiative to give five charities working with disadvantaged people in the town €105,000 in total.

Grants of €10,000 each have also been approved for the other four charities. The Cancer Care Association (CUDECA) and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) were granted the

cash. The Costa del Sol Association of Families and People with Illnesses and the Association of Relatives of People with Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementias (AFAB) also got the aid.

Pedro Perez, the council’s social services spokesperson, said the groups undertook a huge amount of work for the disadvantaged in the town.

“Emaus serves about 200 people a day for example. It guarantees breakfast, lunch and dinner to people in need 365 days a year,” Perez said.

Separately, councillors also approved plans put forward by Perez, whose brief includes housing, for a

Homes and Land Plan set to last until 2021.

The initiative will see the authority survey housing and land stocks to judge their suitability for locals’ needs.

Perez said the plan would help to address rising demand for property in the town. Councillors went on to approve proposals put forward by municipal enterprise spokesperson Cesar Carrasco to limit salaries for senior authority officials in line with those placed on the town’s mayor.

Mayor Jose Ortiz currently earns a gross salary of €61,999, below the legal limit of €66,307 according to Torremolinos Council.

Plucky pensioners awarded diplomas FUENGIROLA Council has handed out diploma certificates to pensioners in the Royal Hall, who have been undertaking a range of workshops.

The programme of activities offered by the Department of Senior Citizens has proved to be widely popular, with 500 people taking part.

Mayor Ana Mula, was accompanied by the Councillor for Senior Citizens, Francisco Jose Martin, along with the teachers of the workshops, for the presentation.

“It is exciting to see that the elderly in our community maintain a desire to get involved, have fun, learn and train.

“That is why today is a day full of joy, because they have graduated, and the programme for the next course is already prepared.”

The free workshops include crafts, computer science, oil painting, regional dances, ballroom dancing, and English language learning.

Enrollment for the 2018-19 course will begin in September.

Mayor tourism meeting BENALMADENA’S mayor and the town’s tourism spokesperson have met with the Junta de Andalucia’s Tourism Minister to discuss strategies for the town going forward.

Victor Navas, the mayor, Encarnacion Cortes, the tourism councillor met with Javier Fernandez to discuss the sector which the authority said accounted for around 97 per cent of Benalmadena’s economic output.

Mayor Navas said the meeting was “essential” to the fortunes of the town. He added the officials had discussed implementing common rules for all towns on tourism to streamline administration.

“Minister Fernandez told us he has better expectations of dialogue with the new government in Madrid,” Navas added.

Cortes said her department shared the same strategy as the Junta’s Tourism Ministry and that they were working towards the same objectives.

Council gives plaza €345,000 facelift

LOCAL yacht and boat dealer, Marina Marbella, has announced that it has reopened its Puerto Banus showroom following a revamp.

The showroom has been renovated and restyled with a new client hospitality lounge.

The new look is part of a recent deal for Marina Marbella to become local distributors for Monte Carlo Yachts, a fast growing Italian manufacturer.

Marina Marbella has been operating yacht and boat services in the area for 50 years.

In their study, they found that only 20 streets or roads were named after women, while 178 were named after men.

The results were presented to the council which has said it will make sure that more streets are named after women in future.

A MAN previously accused of drugging and raping a young woman using sex toys in Marbella, has been released from custody after the court shelved the case.

The decision was made on Wednesday after the supposed victim decided not to continue with her allegations.

The initial arrest took place after the woman told staff at Las Lagunas health centre that she had been sexually abused by the man, who comes from Iran.

MAYOR of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, has been joined by Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Maria Jesus Pascual, to promote a project that will be popular in the community.

This will involve improvement works to the Plaza Baleares, located in Guadebro, a densely populated area.

“A few weeks ago, we had a meeting with residents and they raised the proposal of renovating the Plaza Baleares,” said Ms Mula.

“We got down to work straight away to develop a plan, and we are presenting it now.”

The mayor added that the square will be as functional and as sympathetic to pedestrians as possible, and that more car parking spaces will be provided.

The works have a budget of €345,000 and a timeframe of three months, and if the bidding process runs smoothly, could start in September.

The project is at the public tender stage and the deadline for submitting these is Monday.

HASH STASH: Officers came across a huge haul.

OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil in Estepona have arrested the driver of a van carrying two tons of hashish resin.

The van was intercepted on the A-7 as it passed through the town, after police became suspicious about the driver’s hesitant behaviour.

When they opened the doors of the vehicle they discovered that it was full of bales of hashish resin, and promptly arrested the driver for a crime against public health.

The vehicle has also been impounded for examination and the investigation is ongoing.

THE Malaga provincial court has sentenced James Quinn to 22 years in prison for his role in the murder of fellow Irish national, Gary Hutch, in Mijas Costa in September 2015.

Although the 35-year-old was found guilty for his role, the jury did not rule that evidence provided in court proved that he was the gunman, or that he benefited financially from the killing.

Triple A charity remains uncharged THE legal investigation into a wide range of possible irregularities in the running of the Triple A animal rescue charity is ongoing.

The situation has been hanging over the high profile and popular charity for over two years, but it hasn’t prevented Triple A from maintaining its care programme for abandoned animals, its fundraising or its relationship with Marbella Council.

Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s environmental division, raided the animal shelter’s offices two years ago and four senior members were arrested, with another 14 placed under investigation.

Now police enquiries are focusing on possible financial irregularities, and this comes in the wake of a Guardia Civil report into

The charity has strenuously denied any wrongdoing since the allegations surfaced, and the public

has continued its support too.

Marbella Council itself has backed the organisation, and recently agreed to

donate €30,000 a year to assist in Triple A’s work in rescuing stray and unwanted animals, and trying to find new homes for them.

Lower taxes covered by EU M AY O R o f M a r b e l l a , A n g e l e s Muñoz, has announced that municipal taxes, including the IBI and local council fees, will be lowered in 2019.

It is expected that, despite the reductions, the council will see an increase in income next year.

Ms Muñoz made the announcement in the recent ‘State of the To w n ’ c o u n c i l m e e t i n g , w h e r e she made a positive assessment of her leadership in the nine months since she took over.

Among the initiatives announced by the mayor was the reduction in local taxation that will be offset with increased income from EU development funds worth €15 million, and further grants of €10 million.

Both will be added into the 2019 budget which Ms Muñoz plans to approve as soon as possible.

She added that ongoing challenges for the council include ensuring public money lost in past corruption scandals is returned, and the waiting time for planning applications is reduced.

A REPORT in RTN earlier this month about the thousands of items lost each year in Benidorm reminded me of the time I stood staring, open-mouthed, at a big black coffin languishing in London Transport’s cavernous lost property depot in Baker Street.

This was back in the late 1980s, and the coffin had been left on a bus. Someone with a strong sense of the surreal had placed a stuffed vulture on the coffin’s lid. The tatty old bird had been lost (or abandoned) on a tube train.

I cannot remember the name of the manager of the depot, the biggest in Europe, but what I do remember was her sparkling wit and her bubbling enthusiasm for her job of managing a team handling tens of thousands of items left each year on the underground and in buses and taxis.

“Forget Lourdes,” she chuckled, “more miracles take place within London’s public transport system than at any religious shrine.” And to prove it she led

LOST PROPERTY: Now, are these my teeth? me to a section of the vast threelevel underground repository where the wheelchairs, walking sticks, crutches and artificial limbs were stored.

“The fact that this stuff is rarely reclaimed tells me that people with disabilities are miraculously able to walk without aids after a journey on the tube or a bus,” she added.

I was being given a tour of the depot because I had been asked

by LT (now Transport for London) to write an article about lost property for its the quarterly magazine, London Lines, which I then edited. I can honestly say that the two hours I spent there were so fascinating that the busy manager eventually had to shoo me out the door.

But, before leaving, I got to see something I wished I hadn’t: the dentures section. Dozens of boxes, each marked with the

dates on which sets of artificial gnashers had been handed in, were neatly stacked on shelves.

One had been taken down and placed in front of an old codger who, to my horror, began popping set after set into his mouth. I was too grossed out to watch whether, in the end, he found the ones he’d lost on a bus.

I was also shown the sections that contained laptops, mobile phones, briefcases and umbrellas, but what intrigued me most was the vast miscellaneous section that contained, among other things, a 6ft grandfather clock, also found on a bus.

People who come to reclaim lost items are charged fees ranging from £5 to £20. But I was told that a forgetful diamond merchant was asked to pay a surcharge after he’d come to reclaim his briefcase for the THIRD time in three weeks. Each time the case was handed in, staff had to count the money it contained - £10,000!

The merchant had the habit of taking home that amount every Friday night, and on three Fridays running he left his briefcase on a tube train. He complained loudly about having to pay extra

for its return, but the case never again found its way back into the depot.

Today, the depot is managed

by Paul Cowan, who, in a Guardian article last year said “If we wanted to charge an accurate price for what it costs us to return each item, it’d be £100”.

This does not surprise me, given the amount of work involved in dealing with lost items, 332,077 of which were logged in the 12 months between March 2016 and March 2017. These are dealt with through systems involving catalogues, serial numbers and pink laminate sheets strung from the ceiling.

“The systems themselves are very old, quite complicated, but they seem to work for us,” says Cowan. “I tell the guys as long as they can find an item in under 30 seconds, I don’t mind how they do it.”

This efficiency, coupled with the honesty of a Londoner who recently handed in a bag containing £30,000, certainly proved good news for a Chinese student who had left it on a tube train.

If I had that much dosh, I'd be travelling in London in a chauffeur-driven limousine.

New flight AIRLINE Volotea launched its new route between Malaga-Costa del Sol airport and Palermo in Sicily yesterday (Thursday).

The flight is set to operate once a week on Thursdays from now on. It brings the total number of the airline’s routes operating from the airport to seven as of this year.

Carlos Muñoz, Volotea’s founder and chief executive, said he hoped flights to Palermo would be received as well as the newly launched route from Malaga to Bilbao.

The routes now operated by the company out of Malaga airport fly to Asturias and Bilbao, Bordeaux, Nantes and Toulouse (in France), as well as Venice and Palermo (in Italy).

Volotea’s flights out of the airport had an average occupancy rate of 91 per cent between January and May, the company said in a statement.

The airline has transported more than 318,000 passengers since the start of its Malaga operation in 2012, it added.

Stall set out at travel forum REPRESENTATIVES from the Costa del Sol’s tourist board have attended meetings in Madrid and Barcelona in a bid to promote the destination to business.

The Business Travel Forum was held across sessions at the Hotel Melia Barajas in Madrid and the Tryp Apolo Hotel in Barcelona.

Both talks featured about 20 to 30 minutes of time for the Costa del Sol representatives to speak to delegates. They were each attended by around 100 people.

The Costa del Sol presentation touched on promoting networking and commercial relationships, communicating and exchanging knowledge and experiences.

Arturo Bernal, the general director of Tourism Costa del Sol, said at the meetings: “The region has some magnificent infrastructure for celebrating fairs, congresses and other

types of trips.”

The Costa del Sol is also well connected with other parts of Spain and with neighbouring countries, Bernal added.

Bernal also said the region had a range of venues capable of hosting thousands of people for events and

The Business Travel Forum is set to feature a promotional video for the Costa del Sol on its website. It will be accessible to more than 900 member companies and database contacts which number more than 7,000.

Clucking nightmare

RAINBOW: Celebrating the International Day of LGBT Pride yesterday.

Raising the flag MIJAS town celebrated the International Day of LGBT Pride yesterday (Thursday) by raising the rainbow flag above the town hall and opened a photographic exhibition.

The mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, was present at the event at the town hall and said “Mijas is a diverse area and that diversity must be reflected in its local administration, we must continue to

fight together so that real equality between people is a fact and not a utopia.”

At the event, a declaration of equality was also publicly read out by Francisco Martínez who is the local president of the gay association Arcoiris.

The manifesto emphasises the achievement of the gaining equal marriage rights in Spain and highlights the important

role that local administrations play in supporting the needs of citizens.

He proclaimed that “All humans are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” These are words which are also contained in the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Martínez went on to say that “Mijas reaffirms its commitment to human rights and, consequently,

to sexual diversity, as well as to the non-discrimination of people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The photographic exhibition which was launched yesterday is open to the public and can be viewed in the town hall. The exhibition includes work by several photographers from the province.

PECK OFF: The culprit was driven mad by the birds’ noise.

A PENSIONER has been arrested for poisoning his neighbour’s six chickens in San Pedro de Alcantara.

The 77-year-old admitted he had fed the birds corn, lentils and rice laced with rat poison because their ‘constant clucking and squawking had left him totally desperate and unable to sleep for week’ according to a police statement.

A probe into the deaths was launched when the victims’ owner reported the culprit at the Local Police station.

He spotted the killer launching balls of food ‘of a strange colour, specifically purple’ at the ravenous fowl, which devoured the toxic bait before he could intervene.

The accused has reportedly been charged with animal abuse and will appear in court on an unspecified later date.

The choir sang a mixture of songs in English and Spanish and were joined by three solo instrumental performers on classical guitar, clarinet and trumpet and a male solo vocalist.

After the concert, everyone enjoyed the delicious buffet.

This month, the choir also gave a concert to

members of the American Club of Estepona, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

The choir has now broken up for the summer recess, but will meet again in September to start rehearsals for its Christmas performances.

Interview with Carrie Frais

by Ali Meehan WELCOME Carrie Frais - tell me about your journey to Spain - how did you arrive in Barcelona and what made you move here?

It’s actually quite a romantic story.

I had spent six months in Madrid as part of my degree course and was smitten by the city and the Spanish way of life. After I graduated I decided to spend a year teaching English in Barcelona and fell head over heels in love with the city.

I had to return back to London to complete a post graduate degree in journalism but promised myself that one day I would return to live in Barcelona. I spent 15 years working as a TV and radio journalist in the UK, and then a serendipitous moment at a friend’s wedding in 2003 changed the course of my life forever.

I found myself sat next to a man who was as passionate about his love for Spain as I was. ‘Let’s go and live there’ I (half) joked and, within a year, we had moved to Barcelona, within three years we were married, within four years we had both established new businesses and within six years we had two kids (and two cats). It’s amazing how you can change your life when you put your mind to it!

Like Costa Women for me, in a quest to find a tribe and network with Women you (and Rebecca Laidlaw) came up with an idea to meet a need you both had - tell us more.

In 2007, Rebecca and I both found ourselves with newborns in a city we loved but we had no close family nearby to help us with juggling the many challenges of being new mothers.

At the same time we were trying to keep our careers on track and adapting to life in Spain. Rebecca is an internet marketing specialist, so we decided to combine our skills to create a website dedicated to offering advice and recommendations to mothers from the

international community living in, or relocating, to Spain.

Initially the website targeted mothers living in Barcelona (our first website was actually called ‘Barcelona Mum’ ) but we soon realised that there was a growing market throughout Cataluña and the rest of Spain so we quickly expanded to Madrid, the Costa Blanca and Valencia, Andalucia and the Balearics and that was when MumAbroad Spain was launched. Within four years we had also developed sites for France, Italy and Germany.

What’s been the biggest challenge when growing MumAbroad?

Finding time for everything we want to do!!

For example, all our activities and services on the site have been recommended by a local mum or dad, so the integrity of MumAbroad is based on genuine experiences, good or bad. We are always on the lookout for insightful recommendations by parents who are willing to share their experience with us and this takes a lot of time.

Another challenge has been trying to find enough micro managers in all our regions and sub-regions to ensure that all areas get enough attention.

Myself and Jane Mitchell (the company’s Associate Director) are based in

Barcelona so inevitably this section of the website has a lot of information. We need to ensure that we devote as much effort into every location - which again takes time!

Top tip for Mum juggling home and business life? What has worked for you?

If only there were a simple answer for this!

I think you have to recognise that, on some days, you can’t always achieve everything you want to achieve. I also run a Communications agency and so I need to balance this with my work as founder of MumAbroad, as well as ensuring that I don’t miss my kids growing up!

I do find that I am most productive in the mornings so that is the time I fully focus on my work and keep meetings to a minimum.

It’s surprising what you can get done with a cup of strong coffee and no distractions!

Do you think it’s easier for Mums who move to Spain to make friends, because their children make the first steps to connect? What worked for you?

Kids are obviously a great leveller and, when you share the experience of having children with the experience of moving to Spain, you can create extremely meaningful relationships. So, I think that the real connection comes from these unique shared experiences.

I do not know where I would be today without the strong bond I have with my friends here, born out of a myriad of (positive and sometimes challenging) experiences of starting

a family and living abroad.

You are now well integrated into life in Barcelona - what would be your key learning which helped to make that happen?

I studied Spanish at university so it obviously helped that I could speak the language.

Knowing a bit of Catalan, or at least understanding it, helps with acceptance and integration here in Cataluña. I think that you also need to embrace all aspects of the culture and infrastructure, whether you like them or not.

I strongly believe that if you make a positive choice to move somewhere, you should try to be appreciative of what you have and not hanker after what you do not have. Acceptance, tolerance and a positive attitude will help you go a long way!

This series is about ‘making it happen’ in business and life - what would be your tips for Women looking at moving to Spain and meeting a need for locals and / or foreigners living here?

Network! With the advent of social media, there are so many ways to find out about events and communicate with all sorts of people from different backgrounds and interests. It’s pretty easy to find your ‘tribe’ so there’s no excuse not to network even in front of your computer!

There are numerous Facebook and LinkedIn groups through which one can connect, ask questions and get advice. Mothers innately tend to trust the opinion of other mothers and there are many entrepreneurial women and mums based in Spain who are happy and willing to impart their knowledge.

San Juan goes off with a bang THE San Juan festival was as big and buzzing as ever on the Costa del Sol on Saturday.

On the afternoon and evening of the longest day of the year, thousands of people flocked to the beaches to begin the annual revelry and celebration of St John’s birthday.

Bonfires, barbecues, drink and sun were all present and correct, and at midnight a swarm of people plunged into the sea and shouted for joy as

fireworks exploded overhead.

The bonfires are believed to originate from pagan rituals to rid the land of evil spirits, and washing oneself after midnight was a sign of health and beauty for the following year.

Unfortunately tons of plastic and other rubbish finds its way into the sea every year, and councils are encouraging people to be responsible with their waste, as it does not take a great deal of effort.

FUN-GIROLA: Mayor Ana Mula welcomes in the town’s San Juan festivities.

New attack on food rubbish E S T E P ON A C o u n cil has launched a new campaign to improve the collection of waste in the catering sector.

From now on, the council will supply free wheelie bins to the bars and restaurants that request it to trans-

port the bags with the waste and organic waste from the establishments to the containers.

In this way, it will prevent the dropping of mess that causes inconvenience to pedestrians and that damage

the image of a tourist town like Estepona, said the councillor for Parks and Gardens, Sergio Rodríguez.

In this regard, he pointed out that, although road cleaning will be reinforced during the summer

months due to the increase in visitors, other measures must be provided so that the surroundings of the catering establishments present a good state.

The Council has 100 wheelie bins ready for

delivery to the bars and restaurants of the municipality that need it Interested parties will have to make a request to the External Control Department of the Council or to the cleaning company (Cespa) for their supply.

FUENGIROLA has joined a group of towns on the Costa del Sol formed to highlight the negative effects of seasonality in tourism.

The association is made up of towns like Fuengirola where tourism is the main industry. Unemployment resulting from drops in holidaymakers during the low season is one of their chief concerns, Fuengirola’s council said in a statement.

Rodrigo Romero Morales, the council’s tourism spokesperson, said the purpose of the network was to find ways to keep holidaymakers coming all year round.

“Fuengirola typically only sees one or two of its hotels close while the rest remain open and this is an enviable position,” he said.

“In other towns on the Costa del Sol more than half of their hotels close,” he added.

More E-IE root-changing verbs (querer, sentir) Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE are still on our first category of ‘e to ie’ root changing verbs, and so far we have looked at an example of an ‘-ar’ verb, namely ‘cerrar’ which means ‘to close’. Exactly the same root change occurs with certain ‘-er’ and ‘-ir’ verbs as well, so we will now look at a couple of examples of these.

Let’s take ‘querer’ which means ‘to love’ or ‘to want’. The infinitive form ‘querer’ may not look terribly familiar, but if you have learnt any Spanish at all, you will certainly recognise one of the forms. Remember that we are now using the standard ‘-er’ endings which do not vary.

Queremos Queréis Quieren

You can see that our root ‘quer’ changes to ‘quier’ in the usual places (first, second and third persons singular and third person plural). The beat goes on these root changes when we speak, like this: quiEro, quiEres, quiEre, quiEren.

In the first and second persons plural, the root returns to ‘quer’ and the beat goes on the endings, like this: querEmos, querÉis.

Of course the word that we all know is ‘quiero’ meaning ‘I want’ which just goes to illustrate the best way of learning rootchanging verbs, which is by using them. When my beginners Spanish students learn ‘quiero’ I simply tell them that it means ‘I want’ and can be used in this, that and the other situation. If I were to say to them. Now we will learn ‘quiero’ which is the first person sin-

gular of a root-changing ‘-er verb’, then I probably wouldn’t see them for dust and they would be none the wiser.

Now here is an example of an ‘-ir’ verbwhich makes the same root change of ‘e to ie’ and which also contains a familiar word. The verb is ‘sentir’ and it means ‘to feel’. Since it is an ‘-ir’ verb, we now have to remember to make the distinctive ‘-ir’ ending changes, which are the same for all ‘-ir’ verbs. So, this gives us:

Siento Sientes Siente

Sentimos Sentís Sienten

which mean: I feel, you feel, he or she feels and so on, as usual.

Now the word ‘siento’ ought to

look familiar, from our phrase ‘lo siento’.

You probably know that ‘lo siento’ means ‘I’m sorry’ but you may not realise that the literal translation of this is ‘I feel it’. If you’ve been taught good spoken Spanish you will also know that we use this expression to make a genuine apology and not just when we’ve stood in someone’s way for two second in the supermarket. People who keep saying ‘lo siento’ every time they would say ‘sorry’ in English sound a little strange in Spanish. If you tell yourself that it really means: ‘I do apologise’ then you will realise that the Spanish must be tempted to ask: ‘Why, what have you done?’ The correct word, if any, for these minor apologies is of course ‘perdón.’

Now here’s a question for you to think about for next week. If ‘lo siento’ means ‘I’m sorry’, how do we say ‘We’re sorry’ in Spanish? Don’t spend too long worrying about it, but the answer is completely logical - of course! See you next week.

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com MY Spanish miracle occurred in the late summer of 1960 just after my ship docked in the Spanish port of Vigo.

As my parents were ardent Republicans I had been led to believe that any brush with the law merited death at dawn after torture.

Such thoughts weren’t far from my mind as, during a stroll through the port’s working class areas, we engaged in an impromptu game of street football with several Spanish youngsters.

As we sailors kicked the ball from wall to wall and got the better of the younger Spanish kids my sea-eye spotted approaching Spanish police.

The sight of their pea soup green uniforms and their black tricorne caps (gorra) chilled my sailor’s bones. The pearls dropping from my lips are unprintable.

Back then, the Brits of our generation viewed Spain as a backward Fascist equal to Marxist Albania. Spain was a woeful nation where the ass was the favoured means of transport.

It was fake news again, what has been dubbed The Spanish Miracle (El Milagro Español) was

the name given to a broadly based economic boom that occurred from 1959 to 1974.

Whilst strike-ridden Britain reeled under 17 per cent inflation, a new breed of Spanish politicians, dubbed the technocrats, was unleashed by General Franco.

From 1959, Spain enjoyed the second highest growth rate in the world, only slightly behind that of

Japan. Spain became the ninth largest economy in the world, and was just behind Canada. The economy of Franco’s Spain was a world-class economy and it boasted a world-class industrial base.

The rapid economic expansion reinvigorated old industrial areas: the Basque Country and Ferrol northern coast (iron and steel, shipbuilding), in and around Barcelona (ma-

chinery, textiles, cars and petrochemicals). It also drove an enormous expansion in refining, petrochemicals, chemicals and engineering.

There was massive government investment in key state owned companies like the national industrial conglomerate Instituto Nacional de Industria, the mass market car company SEAT in Barcelona and the shipbuilder Empresa Nacional Bazán.

These companies led the industrialisation of Spain, restoring the prosperity of industrial areas like Barcelona and Bilbao and creating new industrial areas. These enterprises remained under state control.

The automotive industry was one of the most powerful accelerants of the Spanish Miracle. In 1946 there were only 72,000 private cars in Spain, in 1966 there were over one million.

The icon of economic surge was the SEAT 600 car produced by the Spanish company SEAT. More than 794,000 were made between 1957 and 1973. It was the first car for many Spanish working-class families; at its end it was the second car for many more.

DOES wealth really bring you happiness?

Many believe it does whilst others would argue the contrary.

How is it that we can visit the poorest of countries and experience real happiness amongst such poverty?

Whilst employed as a trainee finance broker in the City of London, 30 years ago, a senior member of staff once said to me “However successful and wealthy you become, you will never be any happier than you are right now.”

I didn’t fully understood what he really meant, and he didn’t elaborate, and found his statement rather strange especially as it came from a well-respected, successful person that ‘appeared’ to have everything; dream house, prestigious cars, holiday home, designer clothes etc.

My naive perception at that time was that surely he must be very happy with everything he already has.

Many people spend a lifetime pursuing happiness under the misconception that financial wealth is the answer, only to find themselves unfulfilled, confused and empty when they eventually reach their goal or dream, if at all.

The most common fear, is that of poverty, which simply puts the emphasis on wealth.

DOES wealth really bring you happiness?

PRECIOUS GIFT: Money isn’t everything.

Many are confused between happiness and pleasure, often seeking outside ourselves for something to make us feel good inside. We have become conditioned by consumerism and marketing. As an example, the novelty of a holiday, sports car, boat or simply more money, brings us only short term pleasure, changing our state for a brief period of time, and ceases when the law of familiarity kicks in. Each time this happens, we become more desensitised, leaving us striving for more and more to reach that same level of pleasure and selfworth.

New Ryanair base at Southend POPULAR Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has announced it will open a new base at London Southend, from April 2019, using three new aircraft (an investment of €257 million) and 13 routes.

Although flights will go to eight different countries, Spain is well looked after with five weekly flights to both Alicante and Malaga, four to Palma Mallorca and two to Reus (Tarragona).

The decision to introduce these new routes has been made partly because of the delays on deciding about the third runway for Heathrow and the fact that Southend has a huge catchment area.

In addition, this will see direct competition between the airline and rival easyJet

which also operates out of the Southend airport.

Ryanair’s Chief Commercial Officer, David O’Brien said: “We are pleased to add London Southend Airport to our UK base network. Ryanair guests travelling to and from London and the Essex area can now enjoy low fares on a choice of 13 routes through London Southend’s exceptionally passenger friendly terminal.

Warwick Brady, CEO of Stobart Group which manages the airport said: “We are delighted to welcome Ryanair and its guests to London Southend in S2019.

We have a clear and focused strategy to grow our airport to welcome over 5 million passengers a year by 2022.”

You see, trying to find yourself through wealth and possessions doesn’t work, if anything, it really just keeps the consumerism wheel turning. If everyone could readily afford exclusive, expensive designer labels, such items would lose their perceived value and we would be left with nothing more than their material value.

People that tend to gravitate towards such things would quickly lose their identity and the significance they attach themselves to no longer has any value, rendering the person struggling with their very own identity. I cannot stress how important it is, not to

lose oneself in things that wealth can buy, as it is not the answer to long term happiness.

Wealth gives many people their ‘identity’ and people allow it to become ‘what they are’ leaving them struggling to find ‘who they are.’ They’re identified by their job and possessions, giving them a certain perceived status in society.

If they were to lose their job, wealth or possessions, then they would simply be lost, they have simply forgotten who they are.

So what is true happiness?

It’s appreciating the things you have rather than focusing on the things you don’t have. It’s being grateful. Selflessly giving without the expectation of reward.

Happiness cannot be pursued, but you can pursue a lifestyle that truly results in happiness. True happiness and success comes from the realisation of a ‘worthwhile’ goal or dream for the ‘greater good.’ It’s the process and the journey in doing so where you will find fulfilment and happiness over and above short term pleasure.

Happiness is all around us if we choose to look, it’s a way of being and not having.

It’s ok to enjoy life’s hard earned pleasures of course, but the way to grow truly rich is by giving.

Life is a precious gift to us all, how we choose to live it is our gift in return.

Craig David wows Banus MONDAY June 25 saw one of the most talked about events of the summer in Puerto Banus, with UK garage and RnB veteran, Craig David, taking centre stage at this sell-out event.

Resident DJ Scotty Strutt at La Sala by the Sea teamed up with stunning dancers and live sax setting the mood of this eagerly anticipated event.

After his successful performance last year, Craig David didn’t disappoint his army of fans as he bounced on the stage, flawlessly performing his TS5 set whilst the dynamic crowd sang along in unison, creating the most electric atmosphere.

His show included huge anthems such as ReRewind by Artful Dodger, Temperature by Sean Paul, Controlla by Drake alongside his classics Fill Me In and 7 Days.

The event was attended by members of the football world including English football referee Mark Clattenburg, Newcastle United player Ciaran Clark and ex-Tottenham Hotspur player Stephen Carr.

TS5 began in the comfort of Craig David’s own home in Miami, where he hosted and performed at weekly house parties which was then shared on his Soundcloud. This led to Craig jetting across the world presenting TS5 in some of the best and most fashionable venues around.

Just three Spanish gigs for Carlos Santana VOTED the 20th best guitarist of all time in Rolling Stone Magazine, the legendary Carlos Santana has set out on the Divination world tour which will see just three performances in Spain.

He and his band will be appearing as part of the Mare Nostrum Festival by the Castle Sohail in Fuengirola on Thursday August 9.

Next year sees the 50th anniversary of the release of Santana’s first album and also their stunning appearance at the Woodstock Music Festival which surprised many and kick started the band’s incredible career.

Mixing Latin rhythms - learned from his birthplace in Mexico where his father was a Mariachi performer - with African sounds, the early

album releases were completely different from those of any of the other West Coast bands, but showed how Carlos Santana had blended his heritage within the burgeoning rock scene.

At the age of 70 he seems more than happy to undertake a huge tour which will see him and his band performing many of the outstanding tracks from his long and distinguished career.

Clever cats love us RESEARCH conducted by scientists in Japan has revealed that contrary to popular belief, cats are actually equal to their canine counterparts when it comes to intelligence.

Previous arguments cited a dog’s ability to be trained and learn commands as evidence that they have superior mental abilities, but in reality a cat could do exactly the same if it wanted to. The differences lie in their desire to do a certain activity. We know that many cats are independent and will come and go as they please, whereas dogs are pack animals that respond to a social hierarchy.

Japanese scientists have found that cats can respond to human commands, gestures, emotions and expressions, just like dogs. However, the most interesting study involves a cat’s memory.

We already know that dogs have episodic memories and recall past events.

This suggests that not only do cats also have the same capacity for memory, but they may actually enjoy recalling specific memories, especially of human interactions. This shows a higher level of intelligence than has ever previously been expected and may help to settle the question of whether cats are capable of loving their owners.

WHEN Louis, a pupil at the English International College on the Costa del Sol discovered that one of his friends was suffering a serious illness he decided to try to do something to help.

The 11-year-old who is captain of his football team missed his friend at a local competition and therefore having discovered the problem decided that he would try to raise some money for charity.

His concept was a special song

and with the help of the school’s music department things started moving.

More than 30 youngsters from the school including a host of budding musicians became involved and after a lot of hard work and help from some professionals the song was recorded together with a video which is now online.

Any money raised will go to the the Make a Wish Foundation, an international charity that grants life-

changing wishes to children with critical illnesses.

There is a fundraising page at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fu ndraiser and the song has already earned more than €1,000 for the charity.

Although the song is the brain child of this young man, an international music star Yazz who is also involved in the project, so truly, for Louis and the charity, the only way is up.

MORE than 220 FAMA (Foundation for Abandoned and Mistreated Animals) supporters celebrated Ladies Ascot Day in style at the Tamisa Golf Hotel and raised €2,176 for the charity.

There was in addition, a very generous donation of €2,000 from La Cala Lions meaning that more than €4,000 was finally raised for this worthy charity.

The organisers gave a big thank you to Dave James from Global Radio, Laura Ellen, Cath John and Orla who all gave up their time to provide the fabulous music and entertainment and to IBEX Insurance for sponsoring the day.

The event was a sell out and the next very popular FAMA fundraiser, the Summer Ball, on Friday September 28 at the Tamisa Golf Hotel is also expected to sell out quickly so to book your table contact Pat Coleman on 620 354 885.

www.thelittlegeranium.com STEAK TARTARE is a meat dish made from raw finely chopped meat.

It is usually served with onions, capers, Worcester sauce and other spices often presented to the diner separately and mixed at the table that is the classic way and served with a raw egg yolk to hold it all together.

The name tartare is often used for other

raw meat and even fish dishes like salmon for example. On researching the word tartare (out of interest as I am semi French) a la tartare originally was the dish served in the 1921 edition of Escoffier’s book which serves raw minced steak with tartare sauce on the side which is probably how the name stuck.

Beef tartare can be found all over the world especially in Europe, France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland all have a version, so do the Americans and for hundreds of years the Africans have eaten a similar raw beef dish they call Kitfo which means minced and it is usually served with chilli powder, herbs and spices.

A historic dish and a classic but as a creative chef it is my job to try and evolve dishes for the better, else everything just stands still.

Food needs to develop like fashion or art and science and I think the dish needs bringing more up-to-date but I don’t want to lose its elegance.

In any case, I don’t really like the raw egg

idea and never have. People with weak immune systems might find the combination of raw meat with raw egg a challenge and surely a Salmonella risk. So I have evolved the recipe and I am sharing it with you this week for the first time ever, but before I do I have to tell you a story!

In the 70’s I was training at The Savoy Hotel in London and we had many very famous clients including people like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, David Bowie among others. I was working in the River Restaurant and someone ordered Beef Tartare. I was given a trolley loaded with ingredients including, spices, herbs, onions, egg yolk, capers etc.

I was briefed how to mix it all together and sent over to the table. At the table was Norman Wisdom, a legend and a comedian that my father adored and I recognised him immediately but was trained to say nothing. I served them the beef tartare mixed and spiced up and after about five minutes Norman called

over the head waiter and asked if it could be cooked a little bit more.

The head waiter replied it isn’t cooked at all sir and Norman said that’s a disgrace, don’t you have any chefs in this place! Of course he was joking but he had us all in stitches as he said it in such an innocent boyish way. He could deliver the most ordinary jokes in the most amazingly amusing way! So when I prepare beef tartare I think of Norman.

Years later I met up Norman Wisdom again on an afternoon show called Afternoon Live. He was being interviewed and was going to play the violin I think it was. He was an incredible musician. I asked him if he remembered the steak tartare from The Savoy days and he replied … I never forgot it I was ill for months after!

Time then to reinvent this fabulous dish!

Steak Tartare Modern 400/500g of best beef fillet preferably Galician (as we are in Spain) hand chopped very finely

Ingredients for the dressing • 50g of red wine vinegar • 1 shallot or half a red onion very finely chopped • 25g of brown sugar • 1 red mild jalapeno chilli finely chopped • 1 clove garlic peeled and finely chopped • Approx 10g of fresh ginger finely chopped

To finish dressing (stage 2) • 1 tbsp of capers chopped • 50ml of extra virgin olive oil • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 heaped teaspoon of Dijon mustard • 1 tbsp of fresh parsley chopped finely • 1 tbsp of fresh chives chopped finely • Maldon salt to taste • Freshly milled black pepper to taste

Parmesan and sesame crisp 100g of freshly grated parmesan cheese 1 tbsp of sesame seeds toasted Method • First make the dressing by putting the sugar and vinegar into a sauce pan with a tablespoon of water and all other dressing ingredients, heat and reduce until syrupy.

• Remove and allow to cool and when cool add all the stage 2 finish dressing ingredients

• Mix well in, taste and season

To Make Parmesan crisps For these I cut a 6 cm circle out of a plastic lid from an ice cream tub as a template. The inner empty circle should be about 6 cm and the rim doesn’t matter how thick.

Place the template on a baking sheet (or silicone baking mat) and fill the circle with the grated parmesan. Sprinkle with sesame seeds on top and repeat until you have 4 neat flat circles of parmesan sitting on your baking tray lined with baking parchment or the rubber baking mat. Remove the template.

Cook in a pre-heated oven 180/200 c until the cheese is melted (usually 5-8 minutes) When cooked remove cheese discs from the mat with a palate knife carefully whilst still warm. Now roll the parmesan discs into a roll and set aside to cool. Once cool the parmesan will be crisp. Be careful as they will be brittle.

To Construct and Finish Dish In a clean glass/plastic bowl place your chopped beef.

Now add the dressing and mix well in and mould into rings approx 6cm (or pastry cutters) into shape (see picture) Finish with the parmesan crisp on top and serve.

Dress with truffle cream optional.

Note I use a truffle cream as a garnish for a lot of dishes like this one. Here is recipe again in case you have missed it.

For the Truffle cream 150ml of thick cream 4 teaspoons of truffle oil 2 heaped teaspoons of truffle pieces 1 small onion peeled and finely chopped 1 clove garlic peeled and finely chopped ½ glass of white wine Maldon salt Simply sweat off the garlic and onion gently (don’t colour) and add the white wine. Now add the cream and bring to the boil. Stir well and cook for five minutes on a moderate heat. Pass through a sieve and now add the truffle pieces and the truffle oil. Season to taste and serve.

A real Soul Man WHEN the Blues Brothers movie starring John Belushi and Dan Akroyd went into production, Steve Cropper was the natural selection as member of the Blues Brothers Band.

Avoiding eye strain with computer work AROUND 13 million Spaniards suffer daily from eye fatigue and dryness as a result of frequent use of computers and electronic devices.

It can be a problem especially for those who work in offices where lighting or ventilation conditions are not adequate. However, according to international studies, seven out of 10 adults accept the symptoms of visual fatigue as ‘normal’ as the population has become more accustomed to the consequences of a digital lifestyle.

Spending at least two hours in front of electronic devices can lead to the eyes becoming dry, tired and red, leading to blurred vision and difficulty in focusing. Visual fatigue can also create physical discomfort such as headaches, neck, shoulder and back ache.

EYE FATIGUE: Symptoms can include eyes becoming dry, tired and red leading to blurred vision.

To try and prevent symptoms, it is recommended to rest every hour and look away from the screen. Remember to blink. It may sound simple, but constantly staring at the screen results in reduced blinking and this is essential for moisturising the eyes. Maintain the correct distance between your

eyes and the computer screen. Sit parallel to the screen and ideally keep it 50cm from your eyes.

Temperature, humidity and ventilation can all put the eyes under strain if at extreme levels, so it is important to check the humidity and ensure there is adequate ventilation.

By Andrew Atkinson WHEN England kicked off their final Group game against Belgium yesterday (Thursday) at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, forgotten hero Nobby Stiles will know little of it.

Stiles, capped 28 times, who celebrated his 76th birthday last month, has dementia.

The former England and Manchester United star, who was also diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago, will be watch-

ing the game in his Manchester home.

But Nobby, 1966 World Cup winner, will know little, if anything, of the current status of England’s status.

Having been diagnosed with dementia 16 years ago he has worsened as the years pass.

Added to the toothless midfield’s general woes, Stiles suffered a mini stroke in 2010.

Memories of Stiles joyfully dancing after England’s 66 World Cup win against West Germany at

Wembley - grinning missing front teeth - will be forever remembered.

Stiles made over 300 appearances at United, and played for my home town club Preston North End during 1973-75.

He went on to manage the club during 1977-81.

England and United legend Bobby Charlton also played for and managed Preston.

My thoughts will be focused on England against Belgium this week - but also on Stiles, who will go down as one of the Three

With increased sound insulation throughout the car, and thicker glass in the front windows, the new Duster is significantly quieter than before but, overall, should make a noise in sales.
