Chaos at Malaga Airport

by John Smith ALTHOUGH passengers arrived on time and passed through security c h e c k s q u i c k l y, t h e y were horrified to discover huge queues at passport control yesterday (Thursday).

There was no explanation for the reason for the delay, although two new lanes were opened in departure area C, but according to passenger Tom Solan who was due to travel to Dublin on Ryanair flight FR7045, everything was chaotic and there was just one airport official visible, trying to handle matters.

To m w a s o n e o f t h e lucky ones and got through 20 minutes before the flight was due to depart but when he boarded the aircraft, it wasn’t even half full.

Although Ryanair are renowned for not delaying their aircraft departure, it would appear that there were so many missing passengers that they had to as trying to

In the end, the flight took off late but made some time up and touched down in Dublin just under half an hour later than scheduled.

Having made a complaint whilst waiting for the flight to take off,

Tom received the following emailed explanation from the airport authorities: ‘We sincerely regret any inconvenience and please accept our apologies.

‘We work with the Spanish Police to reduce the waiting time.

‘At the present time, we are reuniting the border controls in a process of modernisation in order to adapt us to customer demand, to improve the quality of s e r v i c e o ff e r e d t o p a s sengers.

‘When finalising, coming soon, new automatic document control check shall be provided, which are surely reducing considerably the waiting time at passport control.’

New Madrid appointment

THE change of government in Madrid means that there is a new Spanish government representative in Andalucia.

Rodríguez Gómez de Celis who will be 48 in July is a long-time member of the PSOE and a vocal supporter of new Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez when he stood for election as leader of the socialist party.

IN my previous working life, I spent a great deal of time travelling around the world meeting with different government officials and heads of state.

In that time, I really only came across the use of bodyguards on three distinct occasions (although there may have been others that I wasn’t aware of).

When I made my first visit to Liberia in the early 1980’s, myself and a colleague were given a bodyguard for the duration of our trip. Dressed completely in black with a red beret and silver plated revolver on his hip and pepper spray in his top pocket, he explained to us that he had ‘juju’ which meant that bullets would bounce off him.

At one stage, we were invited to lunch with the Minister of Telecommunication and a member of the People’s Redemption Council who brought his machine gun toting bodyguard with him so the two of them paced backwards and forwards as we

A few years later, I entertained the first President of the newly independent Federated States of Micronesia, Tosiwo Nakayama to dinner at the top of one of the largest buildings in Chicago and we had to reserve an extra table with a clear line of sight for his bodyguard who had a very noticeable bulge under his jacket.

The third occasion was on the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands War when we entertained Baroness Thatcher, Sir Rex Hunt (Governor of Falkland Islands at the time of the invasion), his wife Lady Mavis and the Administrator of Ascension Island.

We took over the restaurant which was part of a country pub

and again had to arrange a second table for the former Prime Minister’s personal secretary and police bodyguard (who didn’t appear to have a bulge under his jacket) who in actual fact was more like a ‘nanny’ as she was by that time a little forgetful.

There was some consternation when she decided that she needed to go to the toilet which was in the relatively crowded bar next door and the looks on the faces of some of the regulars as ‘Mrs T’ wandered into the bar was quite amusing.

All of this does have a reason behind it and that is that on the Costa del Sol in particular, there are people who do regularly employ bodyguards or security personnel to protect themselves or their property.

These are celebrities, wealthy business people or in some cases those who need protection for ‘other’ reasons so they hire the services of different people.

There is now an official association for registered and ‘legal’ private security companies, APROSAR and this is because

there are some major problems that we mere mortals may not be aware of.

In the past four years, it is estimated by the association that 600 individuals have been fined for being ‘unofficial and unqualified’ bodyguards and in truth many of them are British or Irish but they are not the main problem.

In Spain, when people approach retirement age, they are often still on the books but aren’t required to work on a full time basis which means that they have plenty of free time in which to find additional employment.

This is true of different police authorities and I understand that officers are allowed to keep both their identification papers and their firearms until such time as they finally retire.

The problem is of course that in the event of a break in or attack, there is anecdotal evidence of those bodyguards leaving because if they stay to protect their charges and other police officers are called, then they may well be charged with inappropriate activity.

The moral of the story is, if you are so unpopular that you need protection, make sure that you go to a recognised security company with fully trained staff who won’t either ‘do a runner’ or sell you to the highest bidder.

NEARLY THERE: Works are set to finish on Tuesday.

WORK on the new Plaza-Mirador in Estepona has entered its final stages and is set for completion this Tuesday.

An opening ceremony and proclamation is due to follow the finishing of building with a fair also taking place.

Estepona’s council said in a statement the project would offer a “new perspective” on one of the town’s bestknown areas.

The Plaza, by the Avenida de El Carmen near the town’s El Cristo beach, will cover a total of 1,000 square metres when finished.

It will feature a skylight, shaded areas for people to gather in and viewpoints looking out over the surrounding area.

“The Plaza-Mirador will see the creation of a new tourist centre to serve the demand for leisure and entertainment in the city all year round,” the council said.

Tourism promoters said the venue would create jobs year round and while offering a “novel and modern” image for the area.

The project also includes the creation of a 3,000 square metre public green space surrounding El Cristo beach.

It will feature links to the coastline which will mean the town will be joined up to its coast by walkways. The PlazaMirador will also be available to hire for parties and events.

Rail videos NO CONCERTS: For private promoters this year.

Less music at Mijas Auditorium A READER contacted the paper to ask why it appears that the Mijas Town Hall has decided to stop allowing private promoters to rent the Mijas Auditorium for musical promotions.

It seems however that the council itself will continue to use the Auditorium for its own purposes and occasional show.

There is an unconfirmed rumour that the electrics in the construction are not up to standard which seems strange if the council does in fact intend to use the Auditorium itself.

When contacted it was confirmed by a council representative that the decision had been taken to stop allowing private companies from using the space, but we were then referred to the Department of Culture at the council for further information, which was unavailable prior to the paper going to press.

Whilst it appears that there will be less music in one part of Mijas, it must be remembered that the council does run weekly free events in La Cala de Mijas with different bands playing every Thursday.

TORREMOLINOS Council has arranged to show adverts for the town on the Spani s h c a p i t a l ’s u n derground rail network.

The campaign, called ‘Torremolinos, Are You Comi n g ? L e t ’s G o ! ’ i n Spanish, consists of a 20-second clips showcasing t h e t o w n ’s b e a c h offering. It is set to be screened in 39 stations in Madrid.

The clip will be played six times every hour from 7am to 9am and from 7pm to 8pm, the s t a t i o n ’s busiest time.

More than 12 million people use the network every week.

B E N A L M A D E N A’ S mayor has announced the town’s council has struck a deal to hand over a plot of land for the building of an Alzheimer ’s association headquarters.

Victor Navas said the deal had also resolved the issue of the Association of Relatives of Patients with Alzheimer ’s and Other Dementias ( A FA B ) having to pay a €14,000 annual legal fee.

“AFAB performs very valuable work in our

municipality so it has always been a priority for this administration to find a viable legal solution to this,” he said.

“We have managed to resolve an unjust situation. It was unjust that a group that contributes so much to society with altruistic work had to pay €14,000.”

The plot of land granted to AFAB will be used as the site of a new headquarters for the charity and for the building of a day cen-

tre. It is located in the Santangelo Norte-Miramar area of the town.

Mayor Navas said the council would continue to collaborate with AFAB. “We will carry on searching for ways to make the centre a reality as soon as possible,” he said.

THE town of Benalmadena is employing seven new security operatives to work with the Local Police for the summer.

Mayor Victor Navas explained that, although the new officers have no power of arrest, they will patrol the streets and advise Local Police of any infractions or potential problem areas.

In this way, the council believes that Local Police officers will be able to be more effective and respond quickly to alerts they may receive from their new colleagues, who will keeping an eye open for those who break local by-laws or are in the process of undertaking criminal activity.

A tidy reminder AUTHORITIES in Benalmadena have launched a campaign encouraging people heading to the t o w n ’s b e a c h e s for this year ’s San Juan festival to clean up after themselves.

T h e ‘ T h i s Ye a r, No!’ awareness drive is targeted at revellers and seeks to inform them of the potential damage to marine life, water and beaches’ appearance.

Encarnacion Cortes, the counc i l ’s beaches spokesperson, said those going to the beach should use the bins provided and not leave litter on the shoreline.

THERE GOES THE SUN: The taro rolls into Torremolinos.

For fog’s sake HOLIDAYMAKERS were left puzzled after parts of the Costa del Sol were this week enveloped by a blanket of thick fog.

Known locally as taro - thought to be a maritime term of Phoenecian origin - it is also dubbed boria in other parts of Spain.

The magical-looking phenomenon is triggered by a cool layer of surface sea water, formed by westerly winds, followed by warm breezes from the south and south-east.

It is common at the onset of summer, when temperatures rise quickly, according to state weather office AEMET.

Bribery probe A NATIONAL POLICE officer has been held after an internal affairs enquiry.

Initial reports suggest he is being probed for alleged bribery, breaking confidentiality agreements and membership of a crime gang.

The investigation was led by a Madrid office and the suspect has been remanded in custody at a Malaga station.

Swearing allegiance to the Constitution and Monarch HUNDREDS of people congregated in Marbella over the weekend to swear allegiance to Spain by kissing the Spanish flag.

This formal event referred to as celebration of ‘la Jura de Bandera para personal Civil’ is undertaken around much of Spain by Spanish citizens over the age of 18 who commit to uphold and defend the Constitution and

the rule of the King.

A formal declaration is made by civilians (not members of the military who undertake a slightly longer process) who then proceed to kiss the flag as a visible sign of their support for the Constitution.

The mayor of Marbella Ángeles Muñoz was on hand to start the ceremony and she thanked the various divisions of the

Spanish Legion who were present over the two days of the event.

Saturday saw a concert by the band of the Legion in the church of Our Lady of the Incarnation and Sunday saw the actual swearing of the oath and kissing of the flag in the Avenida Ramón y Cajal following a church service and a tribute to those who had ‘fallen’ in the past.

Crackdown on counterfeit goods “The issue of irregular street vending is always a debate that we regularly discuss at meetings of the Advisory Board and today we wanted the representatives of our productive fabric to know the main measures that are being taken to combat this phenomenon in our municipality,” said Díaz.

The Police Chief confirmed that in the last two and a half months there have been 25 arrests related to this illegal activity, as well as the dis-

mantling of two stores that supplied material to street vendors.

In addition, officers are visiting the markets of Marbella, San Pedro Alcantara and Puerto Banus and he confirmed, “We have a special operation dedicated exclusively to the control of this type of sale, which is reinforced in the summer months with a score of agents.”

GOING UNDERGROUND: Sohail castle is surrounded by ancient ruins.

Digging deep AUTHORITIES in Fuengirola have begun drawing up plans for archaeological works in the area around the Sohail Castle.

The town council’s Archaeology Master Plan, currently in its draft stage, covers the area around the fortress where many other sites are located.

Officials hope to unearth new finds in ruins, which remain largely unexplored.

Rodrigo Romero, the authority’s culture and tourism spokesperson, said the archaeological plan would cover different areas in the city.

“We have a wide range of activities on offer for the summer and we have the best urban beaches but strategically we should keep looking for new attractions for visitors,” Romero said.

Sohail Castle is surrounded by the remains of an ancient settlement known as Suel. Archaeologists and historians believe it was once home to Romans, Phoenicians and possibly also Greeks.

The area has not yet been properly surveyed and explored and the council’s new plan seeks to address this.

Romero said the contract to undertake digs at the site had been tendered out to the Nerea underwater archaeology company.

“We are convinced the site will attract hundreds of thousands of people when finished. They will not only visit the castle but also what we unearth nearby. It is a rough diamond,” he said.

THE Trade Advisory Council has visited the Local Police Headquarters in Marbella to learn about the main actions carried out by the municipal body in its fight against illegal street vendors.

The councillor responsible, José Eduardo Díaz, and the police chief, Javier Martín, invited the representatives of the associations of businessmen and merchants of Marbella to the seizure warehouse, in which 4,000 items had been collected in just the month of May.

Flying the flag

OFFICIALS in Torremolinos have attended the hoisting of a blue flag over Los Alamos beach, the first time the town has had such recognition in 20 years.

Jose Ortiz, the town’s mayor, was accompanied by the council’s beaches spokesperson, Maribel Tocon, and representatives from the tourist industry.

The flag now stands on the Avenida La Riviera, next to the seafront.

Ortiz travelled to Cadiz to collect the award, handed out to coastal areas for their environmental quality, at the beginning of June.

He said the efforts of beach workers and council employees were to thank for the recognition and added the authority was working towards earning more in future.

“This award and the Q for Tourist Quality are very important for a tourist destination. They guarantee the highest level of quality internationally so we can be very happy,” Ortiz said.

Manuel Villafaine, head of the Association of Businessmen of Malaga-Costa del Sol Beaches, said Torremolinos’ beaches were of an ‘impressive’ quality.

“The work the council has put in to achieve this award is so important. We trust the recognition will be extended to the other three local beaches,” he said.

Candidates for the Blue Flag are judged on water quality, environmental management and security, among other criteria.

AWARD: Attractive images on Fuengirola bins.

FUENGIROLA has been chosen to receive the ‘Platinum Broom’ award from by the Technical Association for the Management of Waste and Environment (ATEGRUS), for the third time.

This is the highest accolade for cleanliness that any community can receive and various towns are reviewed every two years.

Mayor of Fuengirola Ana Mula, who recently confirmed that the town had cleared all of its debts, thanked all of the staff in the cleansing department as well as local residents for their hard work in ensuring that the area is always spick and span.

This award recognises the fact that so many waste containers have been buried underground and where above ground are being decorated with attractive images which enhance the general image of the town and have resulted in a reduction of rubbish deposited in the street.

Council continues to support Triple A

by John Smith AFTER a period of uncertainty, the Marbella Council has confirmed its continuing relationship with the Triple A Animal Charity.

Sanidad will continue to bring all stray or loose animals (dead or alive ) to triple A who will take care of them, either to get them back to the owner if they are chipped, try to find them a new home or to

dispose of the bodies respectfully.

The charity has signed a new contract with city hall which will see the council giving €30,000 to Triple A to allow them to continue with their work and according to a spokesperson for the charity, they also have promised to help where they can with supply of water and other very necessary projects around the premises.

There are always dogs in need of help

There has also been talk about an increase in financial support given, however the budget for this year was already set, but there may be additional funds forthcoming n e x t y e a r, w h i c h w o u l d b e greatly welcome.

Triple A exists to help look after abandoned and lost animals and is understandably grateful to the mayor and Marbella Council for their continued support and ex-

pression of trust in the organisation.

This support is only a drop in the ocean with monthly costs estimated as being in excess of €20,000, so the charity is always looking for financial assistance and if you want to help, go to the Heredian Bar in La Heredia, Benahavis on Saturday between 4pm and 8pm for the Barking Mad Dress Sale.

Tenants and occupants could face jail for theft and damage A RECENT writ of accusation by a Murcia-based prosecutor is a stark reminder that certain illegal practices by toxic tenants, and other occupants of real estate, will not enjoy impunity.

tence to a tenant for misappropriating furniture items and a €3,000 fine for causing damage to various others, consequence of ‘a deep resentment and a direct intention of causing financial and emotional harm to the o w n e r, ’ a c c o r d i n g t o t h e s e n tencing Judge.

In Barcelona, the Appeal Court (Section 10) passed a prison term to a tenant that, with the intention of causing the maximum possible damage, knocked walls, pulled pipes and cables, broke shutters and tore curtains and generally, left the property in a lamentable state of despair.

It’s worth noting that in all the rulings, the actions caused by the tenant exteriorise a deliberate and intentional desire to cause monetary loss to the owner.

If the above scenarios want to be avoided by both tenants and owners, it is highly recommendable that parties carefully examine the property to be rented and draw up an inventory (photographic or video if possible) before granting possession.

WHILST Marbella mayor, Ángeles Muñoz congratulated workers for the award of the ‘Golden Broom’ which showed the city’s commitment to cleanliness, residents in San Pedro Alcantara were not so generous.

According to comments on their local Facebook page, a particular area in Nueva Alcantara was so filthy and ignored that volunteers had to go out and clean the open land themselves in order to try to make it a little less unpleasant.

This is a large area near to a school and the photograph published on the

MOVIE STARS: The International Film Festival is 40 this year.

Lights, camera, action SCREENINGS of films which have made the final of a short cinema competition are set to be held in San Roque tonight (Friday).

The town’s Municipal Museum, located on Calle San Felipe, will host the International Film Festival (FICSAN) which kicks off at 10pm.

The contest, now in its 40th edition, saw entries of short films aimed at youth and student audiences. A total of 1,499 movies were submitted from more than 30 countries, with the number whittled down to 46 for the contest itself.

Productions from Andalucia and Spain featured prominently as did films from France, Germany, Argentina, Chile and the United States according to San

Roque Council.

A total of 10 prizes are set to be handed out at the festival’s awards ceremony tomorrow, which starts at 8pm.

The Best Spanish Short Film prize carries winnings worth €2,000. The winner of the Best International Film will take home some €1,500.

A tribute to Spanish screen stalwart Miguel Rellan is also planned for the ceremony tomorrow and DJ Michael Thin is set to man the decks for celebrations afterward. There will also be photo calls and a Hollywood-style red carpet.

The festival comes as San Roque saw an exhibition of artworks from the films yesterday.

WHAT a night everyone had at the spectacular Tamisa Golf Hotel recently, when the La Cala de Mijas Lions held their 20th Anniversary Summer Ball and raised over €1,414.

They all enjoyed a wonderful dinner, followed by a night of dancing to the amazing Echoes of the Sixties. The retiring President, Julie Barry, thanked all the members of her team for the spectacular efforts put in by them during her year of office.

She was proud to announce that, to date, over €75,000 has been given out, or pledged, in her stewardship. She thanked all the volunteers who had staffed the shop so valiantly, keeping it open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

She also thanked all the Lions supporters who make these donations possible. The two sponsors for the night, Inmobiliaria Atlantis PMR and Ibex Insurance, were congratulated for their wonderful support, as were the many sponsors of raffle prizes and events during the year.

It also commemorated 100 years of the Lions Club International. The organisation now has 1.4 million members worldwide, participating in 46,000 clubs in 210 countries.

A new era starts on July 1

when Margaret Bobowicz takes over as President, with Anita Humphreys as Vice President.

Margaret thanked Julie for all her splendid work and was looking forward to being able to lead the club onwards and upwards, by using all their talents to help the community.

The Lions’ motto is ‘We Serve’ and they certainly do that. What a fantastic group of people they are and with all the support they get from Costa del Sol residents and tourists they really do help where it is needed. New members are always welcome.

Funds, donated by the Lions Club, are raised through many Lions’ events and by the wonderful work the volunteers perform in the shop at 12 c/ Torremolinos, La Cala de Mijas.

The next event will be at the Hotel Tamisa Golf on Thursday June 28.

Brian Burdekin a champion of Human Rights EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

by John Smith THE town of San Pedro Alcantara is home to a former United Nations Assistant Secretary General.

Australian Brian Burdekin is a talkative, but modest, Human Rights activist who is a qualified lawyer, former diplomat and visiting professor at the University of New South Wales and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in Sweden.

He has just returned from Zimbabwe where he was instrumental in assisting the creation of the country’s Human Rights’ Commission and was horrified to discover that there are literally hundreds of thousands of undocumented children many of whom are orphans living in that country in poverty.

His next journey is to China to lecture on Human Rights in a country which doesn’t have the greatest of records of looking after the individual needs of its people.

Brian grew up in Australia and was one of those who demonstrated against the Vietnam War as well as Apartheid in South Africa and,after qualifying as a lawyer, became a junior diplomat and then an adviser to various Australian government ministers, as well as a former prime minister.

In 1986, he was appointed as the first Federal Human Rights’ Commissioner in Australia before joining the United Nations and helping to draft the basic standards

His record in Australia saw him tackle the causes of systemic abuse of particularly vulnerable groups – including homeless young people, the mentally ill and people with disabilities.

After the United Nation position, he has been involved in helping to set up independent commissions in some 70 countries around the world but is quite cynical about the way in which governments and big business react to Human Rights.

He explained in an exclusive interview with RTN newspaper: “Generally when governments ratify an international trade

agreement they stick to it.

Similarly when they conclude an international defence treaty they honour it and when they negotiate an international air transport treaty, they abide by it.

But when they ratify international human rights’ treaties which are also binding, governments have frequently treated them as ‘optional extras’ which they are not!”

In his opinion, there is too close a relationship between governments, the military and industry and the fact is that the growth of multi nationals, with the top 10 being either American or Chinese, has seen a general lack of interest in the rights of millions of individuals.

His view on President Trump is unequivocal and he stated: “Trump threatens the whole human rights system” but he is disappointed in governments generally, not just the USA, especially as those who most need protection are the least able to afford it.

Having spent decades splitting his time between Australia and Geneva, when his wife decided to retire they thought long and hard about where they should establish a long term European base and came to the conclusion that Spain was ideal.

The weather is good, prices are reasonable and international travel from Malaga is relatively easy so, whilst Brian still jets around the world, his wife Marie is happy to volunteer at the Butterfly Children (Debra) charity shop in San Pedro where she is building a new set of friends.

The couple still keep a property in Sydney so spend part of their time ‘down under’ and the rest of the time on the Costa del Sol, but in Brian’s case he can be almost anywhere in the world before returning to his home base.

Brian Burdekin is a champion of the underdog especially when common law is very sophisticated when looking at commercial, property and contract matters yet is very vague over matters of human rights. His mission continues to be to help the homeless, disabled, mentally ill and mistreated minorities.

NEW PROJECT: Opening of the wheelchair accessible garden.

A helping hand for schools APRENDO HACIENDO (Learning by Doing) is a new project started by Soroptimist International Costa del Sol to help schools in the area.

The very first activity carried out by the association took place last week, at the IES Miraflores de los Angeles in Malaga to help a special needs class.

Part of the school grounds has been converted into a wheelchair accessible garden so that the schoolchildren can have hands-on experience with cultivation.

“Education is one of the cornerstones of Soroptimist International,” said Amelia Martínez Hockley, president of the association. “One of the friends of our association had told us about this school that was having problems getting funds to improve classrooms and organise extra-

curricular activities.”

Two Soroptimist members, Ann Mason and Larysa Blai, obtained the help of the construction company ProMas Construction and Design SL and financial support of the Age Care Association, and work began.

Soroptimists are professional women working together locally, nationally and internationally to educate, enable and empower women and children to improve their lives.

Soroptimist International Costa del Sol is part of this international network of women which has some 75,000 members in 132 countries, all working to defend the rights of women and children.

“OH, here we go again,” I thought when I received an email from the Peter Tatchell Foundation last week saying that Tatchell, 66, the London-based human rights activist, had been arrested in Moscow for holding a one-man protest against homophobia on the first day of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. I was angry but not surprised.

Neither, I’m guessing, was Tatchell. After all, he had been arrested twice before for protesting in Moscow and suffered brain damage after being attacked by Russian neo-Nazis in 2007.

On this occasion, Tatchell stood with a banner supporting gay men who have been violently targeted in a purge in Chechnya.

He was released after almost two hours, and told to appear at a court hearing on June 26.

His arrest was quickly followed by a warning issued by the UK Foreign Office to Britons visiting Russia which, in effect, bluntly stated: “Don’t do anything to annoy the authorities who have banned all protests of any size during the World Cup.” Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK’s Director, said: “The response to Peter Tatchell’s protest is straight out of the Russian authorities’ playbook, protest in a high-profile location like Red Square, hold a placard criticising Putin or speak in support of LGBTI rights in public, and face immediate arrest by the police.

“In present-day Russia, there’s

no right to peacefully protest, no right to publicly stand up for LGBTI people, and certainly no chance of staging a street protest about last year’s sinister gay crackdown in Chechnya.”

This begs the question: why on earth did FIFA choose Russia to host the World Cup? Back in 2014, when the World Cup was hosted by Brazil, FIFA issued this statement: “Today we strive not only for victory in the game, but for the victory of peace; for mutual respect, regardless of gender, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religion or class. These are the values and aspirations of FIFA, the wider world of sport and people everywhere. We pledge to do our utmost to achieve global peace

and a life of dignity for all.”

But these are certainly not the values of Putin and his thugs, nor are they the values of Qatar, which will host the next World Cup. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, which also stands accused by Amnesty International of exploiting migrants from Bangladesh, India and Nepal brought in to refurbish the Khalifa Stadium. Some are being subjected to forced labour.

Said AI under the headline Qatar World Cup of Shame: “They [the migrants] can’t change jobs, they can’t leave the country and they often wait months to get paid. Meanwhile, FIFA, its sponsors and the construction companies involved are

set to make massive financial gains from the tournament.”

What really riles me is that FIFA has sponsorship deals with many international corporations that are happy to support Gay Pride events in liberal democracies, but remain silent when events take place in countries known for despicable human rights violations.

A few of them made all the right noises when asked to comment on the World Cup being hosted by Russia and Qatar. Coca Cola, for example, said: “We believe that through our partnership and continued involvement with FIFA we can help foster optimism and unity, while making a positive difference in the communities we serve. The Coca-Cola company strives for diversity, inclusion and equality in our business, and we support these rights throughout society as well.”

Yeah, sure you do. But fine words butter no parsnips. The only way people will take such statements seriously is when corporations flat-out refuse to support events in countries which hold human rights in absolute contempt.

For the record I DETEST football, and applaud Tatchell’s courageous stand.

King Edward VIII, a king for just 326 days, was a controversial figure who abdicated on account of his relationship with an American divorcee.

English hypocrisy at its worst, aristocrats were notorious for their between the sheets scandals’ during the depression whilst the workless succumbed to hunger related ailments.

The elite’s trident at the king’s throat had more to do with his empathy with the working classes, an embittered archbishop, and the king’s opposition to war with Germany, which unsettled the pro-war lobby.

liked convention, was dismissive of protocol and said ‘there’ll be no war whilst I am king.’ The king was also quoted as saying that ‘war would be a disaster for Britain.’

In June 1940, Don Javier Bermejillo, a Spanish diplomat was an old friend of Windsor (King Edward VIII). He had known him since the 1920’s and reported a conversation he had had with the Duke to his superiors. Dr Karina Urbach quoted the diplomat as saying, “He wants peace at any price.”

Against his wishes, the Duke of Windsor aka King Edward VIII was appointed Governor of the Bahamas from where he couldn’t maintain contact with the Reich.

The nation’s gold reserves were shipped to Ottawa. The Minister of Information, Alfred Duff Cooper sent his son, Julius to Canada but forgot to inform everyone.

Parents who could afford to do so shipped their families out to America or the Commonwealth.

Royal Navy ships were placed on standby to evacuate members of the Royal Family and key members of the government prepared to be whisked off to the United States.

Sunday Times Magazine, May 21, 1972 quoted author P Addison, The fears that flawed the finest hour: ‘In June, July and August of 1940 over 6,000 children took part in the exodus of the rich.’

Historian Phillip Knightley expressed the view that ‘the working class began to feel, with some justification, that the rich had plans to get out whilst the going was good.’

ON August 17, 2015, a European Regulation on inheritance law came into force. This regulation allows European citizens to choose for their inheritance to be regulated by either country of residence or country of nationality.

Therefore if you are currently a Spanish resident but you have a different nationality that will provide you with better conditions for your heirs, you can choose this by simply stating it in your will.

This came into effect in 2015 along with the European Certificate of Succession (ECS). This document has

been designed to make international probate procedures easier in Spain as it will be a valid title to enter the land registry.

As a result of this legislation those EU nationals residing in Spain will need to have a Spanish will if they decide to choose their country as the country that will govern their inheritance affairs after they die.

You can also opt to have a Spanish title of will with regards to your assets in Spain. This does not mean that Spain will govern your inheritance, this is simply a tool to make probate easier.

Testators can either specify properties or assets to be destined to specific individuals, or simply make a general statement on who their heirs are.

Under Spanish law it is also possible to designate one or more people to deal with the inheritance as executors. You can also appoint guardians if there are minor children. It should also be noted that the will is always revocable which means you can change it at any time.

MY touch down at Stansted was late and I arrived at the hotel within the airport precinct a little after midnight.

This is my preferred stop-over whenever I am in the UK, but I had never encountered a bloke in pyjamas in a queen-sized bed greeting me in the foyer before.

Were they full up and was this the only space available for guests? Or, as it turned out, simply a marketing ploy that emphasised the hotel’s proud boast: ‘a good night’s sleep guaranteed.’

“Good evening sir,” said the jim-jam clad snoozer as I made my way to the check-in machines. “Sweet dreams,” I responded, a little nonplussed.

This was the first time I had checked in online and three of the four machines were occupied by passengers who had alighted the shuttle before me. I gazed at screen number four that simply said ‘hello,’ and despite saying hello back, the greeting remained the same.

The lady on number three moved off so I sidled over and bingo, there were the instructions on screen. Typically machine number four had been the duff one.

Was this a new system?

“Have a good night” shouted the grinning head on the pillow as I grabbed my bags and made my way to the lifts, where I waved my bit of paper in front of the box

to activate lift number one.

Nothing happened, so I struggled up two flights of stairs; negotiated a couple of long corridors with my weighty luggage in tow, and arrived at my room only to find a conventional key-card lock.

Puzzling.

I waved my receipt in front of the box; up and down and from side to side, but the

door remained firmly locked. I’m embarrassed to admit that I even tried to insert the damn thing into the slot at the top, but it was like trying to play snooker with a rope, Grabbing my bags (never leave your bags unattended, not even in a deserted hotel corridor) I strode back to the lifts, which because they were now descending, no longer needed the security scan.

En route to reception, I glanced over and lo and behold, there was a key card in the chute of machine number three.

Grabbing it and ignoring the now irritating “Have a good night” I returned to the lifts, swiped my new card, and was duly beamed up.

Another trek to my blessed door where I inserted the ‘proper’ key card but nothing.

I turned it around and upside down, but still no little green light.

Now I was mad.

With an expletive or two, I grabbed my bags and retraced my steps.

I stomped across the foyer giving an audible growl in response to the predictable “Good evening sir”, and explained the situation to the receptionist.

“No problem”, he assured me, “I’ll just re-configure it” and I was sent off, thankfully for the final time, to get my guaranteed good night’s sleep.

It was 12.50; I was tired, hungry and dying for a pee. Then “Have a good nigh . . .”SHADDUP!

Root-changing verbs and words Basic Spanish for everyday needs

LAST week we started looking at rootchanging verbs and got going on the first of three groups which comes under the interesting name of ‘e to ie.’ We saw one example of these which was the verb cerrar.

However, before we plough on too much further there is one point I would like to look at in more detail as it provides a basis for all our root-changing work (I’m sounding like a dentist now!)

We know that pronunciation is important, and part of this is the whole matter of speech rhythm. This is what gives a sound or shape to our speech, rather like the rhythm of music. If music didn’t keep to a certain beat it would become meaningless, and the same is true of speech.

Often, even in our own language, we don’t hear every word someone says, but we understand them because we recognise the tone and rhythm of what they have said.

Tone can tell us things like whether we

are being asked a question or not and it also gives us other information including underlying messages in the phrases uttered.

We have all heard someone saying something as apparently innocent as: ‘give that to me’ in ways that really mean: ‘I’d like to help you’ or ‘I’m in a hurry,’ or ‘I think you’re an idiot!’

This is a whole realm of study in itself, and extremely interesting too, but before I get too carried away, what I’m really getting at here is that every sentence, and also every individual word in a sentence, has its own beat or rhythm that makes it comprehensible.

This happens in English, whether we are aware of it or not. Let’s take a word from this article, for ex-

ample: idiot. When we say this word we place the emphasis on the first ‘i,’ like this I-diot. Now try moving the emphasis to the second ‘i’ like this: id-I-ot. Now place the stress on the O, like this ‘idi-Ot.’ I hope you can hear the difference, and haven’t offended your partner whilst you’re engaged in this activity. Maybe it would be best to wait until you’re alone with your cat or dog, I find they don’t tend to take this sort of thing personally.

This ‘stress’ or ‘beat’ issue arises with English words like ‘refuse,’ ‘present,’ ‘record’ or ‘desert.’ Depending on where we put the beat, they change in meaning.

In Spanish words stress is equally crucial for understanding but the difference is that it is controlled by

very specific rules.

On my website I have some videos which go through these rules thoroughly in relation to all words in the language.

However, for our purposes here we can say that in the case of root-changing verbs, it is when the beat of the word falls on the root (eg CERR) that the sound splits from ‘e’ to ‘ie’ (almost as though the pressure of the beat breaks the sound into two). Look again at the conjugation of ‘cerrar’ and you will see what I mean. cierro cierras cierra

cerramos cerrais cierran

The change occurs in the first, second and third persons singular and the third person plural. In the other two forms (first and second person plural) the beat goes onto the ending, so the root returns to one, rather than a split, sound.

Therefore in our example, ‘cerrAmos,’ and ‘cerrÁIs’ behave exactly as they would if the verb was not rootchanging as the beat, or pressure, is on the endings.

This is a golden rule for all root-changing verbs, so if by any chance you found my explanation a little unclear we will be looking at many more examples, which means that we will be learning to pronounce them all properly and therefore making sense when we speak.

www.thelittlegeranium.com HAVE you noticed the huge increase in gluten-free products in the supermarkets and shops?

The gluten-free diet is sometimes promoted as a way to lose weight, or as a ‘healthier’ diet for the general population.

On the packets it often says healthy, free of gluten and colourants etc. These

healthy claims are unfounded. The glutenfree diet is healthier for people with glutenrelated disorders (celiac disease or gluten sensitivity), but there is no evidence that it is beneficial for people who do not have these conditions.

In fact gluten-free processed foods often contain more sugar than products with wheat so it is by no means any healthier.

You could easily substitute gluten-free breads, pastas and cookies into your diet, without increasing your intake of healthful gluten-free foods like vegetables and fruits.

In this case you may actually experience a reduction in diet quality, since many gluten-free processed foods are lower in fibre vitamins and minerals than their gluten-containing counterparts.

This type of gluten-free diet may also be higher in calories, since many processed gluten-free foods contain higher levels of fat and/or sugar to compensate for flavour and texture changes which result from the

removal of gluten. Any diet that is higher in calories is likely to promote weight gain, not weight loss. So it’s a myth that glutenfree is healthier.

Fancy labels on gluten-free foods have the potential to be used as a marketing tactic, even on products that traditionally don’t have any gluten in them anyway.

Misinterpretation by consumers, especially of junk foods, that gluten-free means they are healthy is a real concern as it is simply untrue.

We are all susceptible to the power of mass-marketing and ultimately that is often what this is. I know people might say “How can you dismiss a gluten-free diet as a fad?” But for the vast majority of people, that is exactly what it is unless you are strictly wheat intolerant (celiac), gluten-free has no advantage.

There are millions of people who claim that they are wheat intolerant and we see so many more clients these days on a

gluten-free diet in our restaurants and we have all seen a huge increase in glutenfree products in the shops, but to be honest only very few people have been diagnosed celiac.

One of the changes you could make if you want to be healthier is to simply avoid processed foods and replace them with natural foods like more fruit and vegetables and natural grains. One of the things we like to eat at home is quinoa, an ancient grain which is totally gluten-free and actually makes a nice change from pasta or rice. Quinoa is like a sponge and it soaks up flavours so whilst the cooked product may seem bland when you drench it with fresh fruit juices it really comes alive!

At the moment we have fantastic oranges from Sevilla and juicy cherries for example as well as fresh asparagus in abundance. Combine them with quinoa and you will have great flavours and no concerns about fat, sugar or gluten!

Gluten-free and healthy Quinoa salad with local Asparagus Ingredients more than enough for 4 For Quinoa • • • • •

250g Quinoa (Bags usually come as 500g) water 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon of white wine vinegar A little olive oil

To finish Quinoa • 4 tablespoons orange juice • 1 orange, sectioned into segments • 2 tablespoons of toasted pistachio nuts roughly chopped (optional) • 2 tablespoons fresh cherries destoned and chopped • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley • 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon good honey • Maldon salt to taste • Squeeze off 1 fresh lemon • Squeeze off 1 fresh lime • Juice of 1 fresh orange

For Asparagus 2 bunches of fresh asparagus

2 tablespoons of truffle cream sauce Maldon salt

Method Start by boiling the quinoa grain in at least three times water to the grain and then add the other quinoa cooking ingredients like the vinegar and salt to assist flavours. Boil for about 15/20 minutes.

Drain and let it rest and cool down and rinse under cold water to remove any starch.

Now add all the quinoa finishing ingredients (juices and fruits) and toss well together. Make sure that you season well and continually taste check until you are satisfied. You can add spices like hot paprika to spice it up if you like.

Cut and trim the asparagus so that all pieces are equal.

Blanch in boiling salted water for no more than one minute.

Remove and finish the asparagus on a chargrill or barbecue for two minutes and season with Maldon salt.

Serve a little ring of the quinoa on a plate (preferably moulded into a ring about 6cm diameter) with the asparagus on top and drizzle with truffle cream.

Serve as a starter like this or in the centre of the table

with a crisp herby salad.

For the Truffle cream 150ml of thick cream 4 teaspoons of truffle oil 2 heaped teaspoons of truffle pieces 1 small onion peeled and finely chopped 1 clove garlic peeled and finely chopped Glass of white wine Maldon salt Simply sweat off the garlic and onion gently (don’t colour) and add the white wine. Now add the cream and bring to the boil. Stir well and cook for five minutes on a moderate heat.

Pass through a sieve and now add the truffle pieces and the truffle oil. Season to taste and serve.

Fighting that cat smell!

Here are some tips to reduce cat odour in your home. You can begin by making sure you are using a litter which specialises in deodorising. Generally, the best for this is a litter which clumps together. Not only is this better at absorbing those smells, it is also easier to clean up when your little furball pays a visit to the tray. You should keep the tray in a large, open and well ventilated area, and always in the same place, as cats loathe change and may rebel and choose not to use it.

I know it’s not fun, but it is necessary to scoop their litter daily, ensuring the smells have less time to linger. Finally, embrace the power of baking soda! It is a safe and natural deodoriser which can make a big difference in the smell. Sprinkle some in the litter box and it will really help!

By Andrew Atkinson FERNANDO HIERRO, Spain’s 2018 World Cup unexpected coach in charge of the national side in Russia in the wake of the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, has high praise of ex-England coach Sam Allardyce.

“I don’t know how he did it,” said Hierro, of ‘Big Sam,’ when in charge of Bolton Wanderers.

It was Allardyce who signed former Real Madrid star Hierro at Bolton in 2004: “Sam even made sure there

was tea available to drink,” reflected Hierro.

Hierro has found himself in at the deep end in Russia, after the axe swung on Lopetegui, after taking the vacancy at Madrid when replacing Zinidene Zidane, who quit after leading the club to the Champions League trophy win last month.

Hierro, who made 21 appearances for Bolton, said: “Bolton had shown an interest in 2003, but I had to sort things out at Madrid.

“When I joined them in

2014 I rejected offers from Mexico, Spain and the USA. I had a desire to do well.”

Allardyce initially left Hierro warming the bench following his arrival and the Spain coach said: “It was uncomfortable sitting on the bench.

“But I never went knocking on the manager’s door.”

Hierro managed to break into the first team line up and helped Bolton reach Europe - for the first time in the club’s history.

“We are very excited about this new Trocadero Marbella Ladies Team regatta project. After winning the seventh Circuit of J/80 in Sotogrande and the Andalucian Championship as Da Bruno Marbella, we went to this Cup defending the Trocadero Group with the women’s team,” said Orbaneja, leader of the Marbella Team regattas project.

The Marbella Team, winner of the 35th King’s Cup, is currently finalising its competition calendar, which will include the Mundial and 37th Copa del Rey as well as the Sotogrande Classic Week.

Judges said MINI Yours customised was a “brilliant idea with enormous potential" which takes hands-on configuration well beyond the commonly available choice of colour and fittings.

Best-selling Mazda gets power boost MAZDA’S bestselling roadster is set for an update this summer as a new and more powerful version of the MX-5 hits the market.

A boost to engine power is the headline news for this year’s model among a range of tweaks Mazda made.

Mazda’s masterminds upped the 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine’s revs to 7,500rpm from 6,800rpm, while power increased from 158bhp to 182bhp.

A cheaper 1.5 litre model is also on offer.

The change is said to optimisze MX-5 driver’s ‘Jinba Ittai’ driving experience, a symbiotic relationship between motorist and motor akin to that of a well-acquainted horse and rider. Maximum torque has also been tweaked upwards slightly.

New safety technologies have been added making the Mazda all-the-more suited to city cruising.

The five new i-ACTIVSENSE safety technologies include, Advanced Smart City Brake Support which detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead and helps avoid collisions, and Smart City Brake Support (Reverse) which detects vehicles and obstacles behind, as well as Driver Attention Alert, a Traffic Sign Recognition System and a Rear-View Camera.

And the award-winning KODO-Soul of Motion design is enriched through a darker paint finish for both 16" and 17" alloy wheels, and the availability of a new brown canopy colour for soft-top models.

The 2019 Mazda MX-5 goes on sale throughout Europe from August 2018 onwards.

The firm has yet to announce prices for the new model.

Prices for the 2018 MX-5 ranged between €27,995 and €29,995.
