MANY English people don’t understand the fascination that the Spanish have for roundabouts which become major landmarks in roads around the country.

They may not know how to drive round them (and more of that later) but they like them so much that not only do they name and decorate them, but they even have different words for them so you could be approaching a Glorieta, a Rotunda or even La Circulación Giratoria.

It is almost impossible to find a roundabout which doesn’t have some form of decoration on it and it’s not just a few shrubs or an electrical conduit, but councils have spent a huge amount of time and energy in ensuring that each roundabout is better than the next.

Back in 2016, the mayor of Estepona on the Costa del Sol reportedly spent €50,000 on a statue showing a couple - possibly copulating - and stuck it in the middle of a roundabout without

The range of different designs is quite incredible, obviously in older cities there are classical statues and fountains, but roundabout designs cover the whole gamut of human experience with ships, anchors, submarines, aircraft, cars, modern sculpture, abstract sculpture, windmills, buildings, animals, the odd Picasso and possibly a genuine Dali.

There’s even a roundabout with a roundabout on it plus hundreds decorated with bright flowers which are changed on a regular basis. What’s more, come Christmas or special Saints Days, then out roll new designs including Nativity Scenes, Reindeer and Santa Claus.

So the roundabout is an important icon within the Spanish psyche and this is why so many councils issue press releases

every time they produce a new decoration to appear within their territory.

The only real problem with Spanish roundabouts however is that they are dangerous for road users!

Apart from the fact that the majority of Spanish drivers think that they get charged every time they indicate, those who were taught to drive some time ago were given different instructions to those

who have learned recently.

The old concept was that the driver should remain in the inside lane (that nearest the roundabout itself) and then move out into the outside lane to exit.

As the number of cars increased so dramatically, it became apparent that this was potentially dangerous and the Guardia Civil issue diagrams advising drivers to stay on the outside lane where possible so that they don’t cut across other cars.

It can be quite daunting as a foreigner to attempt to drive on and off of roads circulating Spanish roundabouts but after a while (and perhaps a few ‘close shaves’) one tends to develop a sixth sense and judge which car is likely to cut you up without indicating.

The only problem then is deciding which hand signal would be the most appropriate and understood by the culprits. My wife who is Gibraltarian tells me that some of my favourite would not make sense to the average driver, so I am in the process of working out a number of new ones.

Either that or fit a bull horn behind the radiator so I can shout ‘cabrón’ if my opponent is a man.

Town promotes its natural charms

NATURAL BEAUTY: There is more to Estepona than its beaches.

E ST EPONA Council has announced that it has completely revamped its website ‘Estepona Natural’ to raise awareness about the environmental attractions of the town.

Councillor for Tourism, Ana Velasco, explained that the site was launched in 2014 to spread the uniqueness of the area’s natural enclaves, and to

publicise the need to preser ve and care for that green heritage.

T he design of www.es tepona-natural.es has been improved to make navigation easier and to show off some of Estepona’s beautiful natural spaces.

In addition, users of the website will be able to go to a section where there is a list of 10 excellent hiking

trails in different areas.

The hikes have been categorised according to their difficulty, and there are also bicycle and horseback routes.

Hikers will be able to discover unique areas like Los Pinsapos promenade, Los Reales peak or Casa del Guarda, a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century.

PARTY PEOPLE: The San Juan party is one of the highlights of the year.

San Juan to light up La Salida beach RAFAEL PIÑA, deputy mayor of San Pedro Alcantara, has given an introduction to preparations for the San Juan festival in Marbella.

Celebrations are set to start at 7pm on Saturday June 23, continuing until 4am with an extensive programme of live music performances.

There will be a mix of popular local artists like Juan de Lola, We are not

DJs and 29seis70, with national groups like Sex Museum.

“We encourage both sampedreños and residents from nearby areas to enjoy this party that we are holding on the beach of La Salida,” said Mr Piña.

Along with the many bars there will be a bonfire on the beach, an increased number of toilets and a bigger security presence.

Trapiche del Prado granted a facelift

TAINTED TRAPICHE: The mill will be restored to its former glory.

T H E A n d a l u c i a n re g i o n a l g o ve r n ment ’s Depar tment of C ulture has given the green light to emergenc y and restoration works to the Trapiche del Prado mill.

T h e m i l l w a s o n ce a n e m b l e m o f Marbella’s flourishing local sugar industry, but has recently fallen into a state of ruin.

As the 17th centur y monument is included in the Catalogue of Andalucian Historical Heritage, and so permission from the Junta was required.

An archaeological survey has been carried out and so planning for the works can now begin.

A contract for €120,000 has been drawn up and it will immediately be put out to tender.

Marbella’s councillor for Historical Heritage, Carmen Diaz, said that the administrative process for bidding for t h e co n t ra c t wo u l d l a s t fo r t h re e months.

It is estimated that the works will begin in September and will be completed by the year’s end.

Beach boost for disabled FUENGIROLA Council has announced that plans underway for a new structure on San Francisco beach will improve accessibility.

The objective is to help elderly and disabled people to enjoy the sea with reduced difficulty.

Facilities will include new lanes in which those with reduced mobility can swim safely; ropes to pull to call for assistance; and handrails which will be securely fixed into the sea floor.

New developments will also feature 22 seats which will stand on the shore at a depth of 40 or 50 centimetres.

The council predicts that the structure will require an investment of €21,500.

Town wins space race WORKS have been completed by Estepona Council in the northern part of Huerta Nueva, by the Ramos Cazorla pavillion, on a new 80-metre long two-way street with 40 new parking spaces.

The new road connects Calle Ortega y Gasset and Calle Cristobal Ruiz Mendez, which will improve the flow of traffic in one of the busiest parts of town.

The road is already open to traffic, although one of the pavements will remain closed while the old fire station is extended.

Charity gets the keys to council

CHAMPIONING CHARITY: The most vulnerable will benefit from the move.

MAYOR of Estepona, Jose Maria Garcia Urbano, has handed over the keys of one of the council’s offices to the char ity Estepona Solidarity.

He explained that the charity has stood out in re ce nt ye ars for the actions it has taken to help t h e m o s t v u l n e ra b l e i n

society.

As well as hosting meetings, the office will also be able to store goods and food for Estepona Solidarity’s campaigns.

Mayor Garc i a Urbano said that Este pona is a city with a “great capacity for charity” and revealed that the council has of-

fered spaces to a range of other non-profit organisations to help in their work.

President of Estepona Solidar ity L aura L opez , thanked the council for donating the office, as it will allow the charity to improve its ser vices for those most in need.

Plush plaza planned REFURBISHMENT works to be carried out on the Plaza de la Iglesia in San Pedro will begin shortly, according to sources from the mayor’s office.

The plaza is a major square in the town centre where both the town hall and the main church are located.

The modernisation of this central part of the town will be carried out by the construction firm Guamar SA. It was chosen over 10 competitors because it managed to lower the budget of the bid by over 25 per cent, to €1,024,659 and reduce the time frame of the project from 10 to six months.

These works will be carried out as part of the financially sustainable investments plan,

(funds which were assigned in 2016), and will begin in the coming days, once the act to confirm the works is signed.

This is the most ambitious project planned in the current political term, as it aims to modernise and refurbish the entire central plaza.

Works will be undertaken to provide new surfacing, access, lighting and underground parking.

There will also be efforts made to create shaded areas and to improve the functionality of the space so it can better host events.

A new focus on nature will be notable, with new species planted and efforts made to preserve the existing trees in the area.

PARK LIFE: The works will soon be completed.

New park to rest and play FUENGIROLA mayor, Ana Mula, has revealed that work on the new Los Boliches park is nearly three quarters completed.

She visited the site along with Councillor for Beaches, Pedro

Cuevas, and they an nounced that the park will be ready by the end of this month.

“We always have pro jects on the go and this time the northern area of Los Boliches is bene fiting,” said Ms Mula.

“We thought this new park would be welcomed by residents and cater to their needs.”

Among the park’s fea tures are a playground, table tennis tables, a basketball court and resting areas.

Railing against inaction BENALMADENA Council will request authorisation from the Ministry of Finance to use its own surplus to build a new Cercanias stop in Nueva Torrequebrada.

At a meeting on May 31 a proposal was unanimously approved to commission the Ministry of Development to carry out the works.

This would allow the authorities to respond to the demands of residents, who currently have to travel several kilometres to catch the train, which connects Malaga and Fuengirola.

A recent petition collected 1,400 signatures in favour of the new stop, and at the moment Benalmadena only has two: Arroyo de la Miel and Torremuelle.

Adjoining towns Torremolinos and Fuengirola have five and three stops respectively, and Mayor Victor

Navas said the addition would be “beneficial to the local economy.”

The central government, which has jurisdiction on matters like these, said in December that it had no plans for a new stop and that further cost-benefit analysis was necessary.

This is not the first time that this issue has been discussed by the council.

Nueva Torrequebrada is currently undergoing development and has a population of 4,000 people.

Recent development projects in the area resulted in the construction of a new school, funded by the regional government, and an extension to the dam, whose budget came out of central government.

The council says that a new train stop would mean a “considerable improvement to quality of life.”

RAFAEL PIÑA, deputy mayor of San Pedro Alcantara, has announced that plans to build a new secondary school have been approved by the Junta de Andalucia.

“It’s great news for the whole area, as it has been many years since we have had the green light for such a project,” said Mr Piña.

As well as a new school, the site will also include sports and social facilities.

It will have to adhere to regulations around accessibility, the environment, sanitation, irrigation, the electrical network and communications cables.

HOME AND DRY: The investment will put the company in a new stratosphere.

SPOTAHOME, the company set up by Estepona entrepreneur Alejandro Artacho and three partners, has just secured €34 million of financing from a firm in Silicon Valley.

This is the fifth round of financing in just four years for Spotahome, a platform for renting houses, apartments and rooms for stays of longer than one month.

One of Malaga’s start-ups with the

highest exponential growth, the Spotahome Group is now the leading intermediary for online rentals, with a portfolio of more than 130,000 properties in 450 locations.

Three million people a month visit the site to look for somewhere to stay, and the platform is known for providing exhaustive information about the properties and their locations, maps and quality videos.

Spotahome was founded in 2014 by Alejandro Artacho Bruno Bianchi, Bryan McEire and Hugo Monteiro.

Its visibility among international investors soared two years ago with a stall at South Summit, the biggest entrepreneurs fair in southern Europe.

The new injection of capital will be used to invest in new products, better technology, and further improve customer service.

PRISON PENDING: The defendant is likely to receive a heavy jail sentence.

A DETAINEE was due to be sentenced yesterday (Thursday) on the charge of shooting dead a man in Mijas, as part of an ongoing feud between two criminal groups.

According to the prosecution’s findings, the defendant, an Irish man, entered a residential area carrying two weapons, and waited for the

victim (also Irish) in a parking lot.

When the man arrived and approached his vehicle, the suspect, who had put on a ski mask to disguise himself, reportedly rushed up to him and began firing.

The victim then tried to flee the scene but his assailant shot him 15 times, including two

The defendant was then picked up by a waiting car, which was later set on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence.

He is believed to be part of an international criminal organisation that was involved in drug trafficking, and lived a luxurious lifestyle.

Jesús Carmelo Padrón Gordillo, a Facebook friend who lives in Gran Canaria, responded by saying: ‘Handsome? He is so stupid!!!’

Gordillo, when asked to explain just why he thought Pedro Sánchez was stupid, never responded, so I began trawling the Internet to see what evidence, if any, there was to suggest that Spain’s Prime Minister might be in the same league as established imbeciles in Western politics, such as Donald Trump, his VP Mike Pence and hard-line Brexiteers like Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and Jacob ReesMogg.

Nothing came to light. Indeed, everything I’ve read about Sánchez suggests that he is a man who stands a very good chance of propelling Spain into a new era of economic growth and social stability, despite the fact he

That’s certainly not a sign of stupidity.

He then delivered on a promise to pick a socialist, feminist and pro-European cabinet. Spain now has a centre-left administration with a record number of women.

With 11 women and six men, Sánchez’s cabinet is 65 per cent female.

He also made it clear that he is absolutely committed to the EU. Polico magazine quoted him as saying: “This is a decisively proEuropean government. Europe is our new homeland.”

Add to that the fact that he has voiced his determination to introduce new environmental protection policies and has promised to help pensioners, the unemployed and those with insecure jobs. He also vowed to fight child poverty.

PEDRO SÁNCHEZ: With his new, mainly female cabinet. has chosen for his team. The new government features a number of high-profile technocratic appointments such as astronaut Pedro Duque, who will be Spain’s new Science Minister.

Duque is a vocal supporter of science. “If we keep failing to invest in our future, this country will sink forever,” he said in 2013, during protests against cuts to science effected by the government of Mariano Rajoy.

The new minister is also an outspoken critic of pseudoscience, homeopathy in particu-

lar, which he described as “candy”. He insists: “It doesn’t work. It doesn’t do anything.”

There’s good news too for Spain’s gay communities. The new Interior Minister is Fernando Grande-Marlaska, an openly gay former judge at Spain’s top-level National Court. Each year the daily newspaper El Mundo reveals the top 50 most influential Spanish homosexuals. In 2016 Grande-Marlaska headed that list.

In 2010 he made public his homosexuality and encourages all gay individuals ‘to help others.’

All the new ministers broke with tradition by taking their oaths on the constitution rather than the Bible, following Sánchez’s example.

On the day Sánchez took over from Mariano Rajoy, he received a congratulatory call from the UK’s utterly inept Prime Minister Theresa May, who could give masterclasses on how NOT to govern a country.

When her fool of a Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson recently referred to the EU as ‘the enemy’ and said he believes that Trump would make a better job of handling Brexit, she should have instantly sacked him. But May is utterly incapable of imposing discipline and just stands around wearing a frightened bunny face as her team members fight one another like cats in a sack over the catastrophe that’s Brexit.

While Sánchez has chosen ministers who are all experts in their respective fields, Tory top guns are mainly mega-wealthy self-serving toffs who aren’t even qualified to push a shopping trolley. Oh, they wouldn’t, even if they could. They’re far too posh to push anything other than policies guaranteed to make themselves richer and everyone else a damn side poorer.

DERELICTION OF DUTY: The suspects are awaiting sentencing.

18 year-old woman allegedly raped by two policemen TWO Local Policemen in Estepona have been arrested for the alleged rape of an 18-yearold woman.

The officers, aged 37 and 38, have been charged with sexual assault, threatening behaviour, prevarication and a crime against public health.

The victim had arrived in Estepona with two friends on Saturday night, to have a few days of relaxation after finish-

ing their exams.

Their car was stopped by the two officers, who asked the person driving if he had been drinking alcohol, to which he admitted he had, as they were celebrating.

The three teens were then instructed to get out of the vehicle, take a taxi, and the policemen would return the car at the end of their working day.

According to the report from

the complainant, moments after the three friends arrived at their home, the two officers turned up in the car.

They were allegedly carrying cocaine and the attack happened shortly afterwards, with one of the friends managing to call the National Police.

The victim was transferred to a hospital and statements were collected from all possible witnesses.

THE Ortega Bru Art Gallery in San Pe d r o i s h o s t i n g a n e x h i b i t i o n called ‘Plastihistory of Science’ until June 29.

Through 20 different displays of plasticine figures, key scenes of scientific progress in histor y are shown.

The exhibition combines education and fun, and is likely to be appealing for the whole family.

Mayor Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix was joined by Councillor for C ulture, Dolores Marchena at the inauguration yesterday (Thursday).

P u p i l s f ro m t h e S a n t a M a r i a l a Coronada school were also in atten-

dance, and the exhibition is by the Educa Foundation which is touring throughout Spain with great success.

Councillor Marchena explained t h a t t h e i n a u g u ra t i o n c o i n c i d e d with the renovation of the exhibition hall, and invited the public to visit it and enjoy this amalgamation of art and science.

Mayor Ruiz Boix thanked the council of Cadiz for its support of San Pedro in cultural activities.

The exhibition will run from June 14 to 29 from Monday to Friday at t h e fo l l o w i n g t i m e s : 1 0 . 0 0 a m to 2.00pm and 8.30pm to 10.30pm.

THE Sotogrande Camerata is organising another Charity Gala evening, this year on Saturday June 30 at the Sotogrande Puente de Hierro Polo Ground.

They are supporting two local charities, La Fundación Santa Maria Polo which helps young disabled riders and Centro Contigo in La Linea which works with disadvantaged and at risk young people.

Costa del jobs THE latest unemployment figures for Malaga Province show that 4,238 people found work in May. This represents a reduction of 2.8 per cent in unemployment compared with the same month last year.

Train time for town MIJAS Council has announced that it has provisionally reserved land in the El Ensanche de la Cala area for a coastal train.

Councillor for Urban Development, Andres Ruiz, explained that the objective is for an extended Cercanias train to run through the town.

Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado said: “We want the line to connect the city of Malaga with the rest of the towns on the Costa del Sol, with at least four stops in the Mijas area.�

By Ali Meehan ONE of the many charities which operates in Spain is the Samaritans. I talked to their former CEO and now Change Management Specialist Lynda Brettle about the services the charity offers and how loneliness can affect anyone, even people living in the sunshine.

Hello Lynda - where are you from originally and where do you live now?

Born and brought up in England but worked overseas all my adult life - over 20 years with the British Diplomatic Service on postings worldwide and then once I had a young family, I settled in Spain in 2003. I initially set up a small language academy and then worked in various teaching / training roles - more recently I have been involved in coaching, and counselling and social care.

Did you choose Spain, or did Spain choose you?

I think Spain must have chosen me as a chance visit led to us deciding to move here as a family and leaving the FCO lifestyle behind! No regrets and we had a fabulous place for kids to grow up; if not a great place later to find work.

My son is now in the UK planning to join the Royal Navy and my daughter is a modern languages teacher in France You have been CEO for the Samaritans and now tackling Change Management; tell us what the organisation is and how you got involved?

I saw an ad in the local paper for people with my skills and experience to join the Board of Trustees. Having applied and been successful I was asked to take on the CEO slot. I am pleased

In your experience, what do people find hardest when they move to a new country Leaving family and friends behind who may or may not have been in favour of your move.

Feeling homesick and out of their depth when confronted with a strange environment, culture, language and so many new things to learn about. Unless you are on a fixed posting with an employer from home finding work and schooling, medical care or whatever you most need can be daunting and frustrating Loneliness can affect anyone, even people living in the sunshine. Do you have any tips for counteracting?

Number one; make an effort to learn the local language as not only will it give you confidence and independence but joining a class will help you meet other newbies. Look in the papers or online and find a social club that might interest you where you can meet other like-minded folk and get involved.

Our Friends of Samaritans fundraising and social group offer the chance to get out and about and meet people too if people would like to support us.

What advice would you give to women thinking about moving here?

Do your homework before you come on requirements for working or retirement possibilities and learn Spanish!

Rent first before you buy into a property make sure the area / lifestyle is right for you.

Have some emergency funds for a rainy day they do say the only way to make a small fortune in Spain is to arrive with a very large one!

More about Lynda, when you aren’t working for the charity where would we find you?

I enjoy travelling and take off on trips around Spain whenever I have chance. It is such a country of variety with plenty to enjoy from beaches, to the mountains to city breaks. I also like to keep fit with pilates and zumba - without good health we have little. Money cannot ever buy you that or an extra few years of life. My partner runs a motorsport company in the UK and a need for speed so we are often at Cartagena or other local race circuits. I always do my best to catch up with lots of old friends frequently.

Running against cancer EACH year the Mijas House Harriers support a local charity and this year they have chosen a local Spanish Children’s Cancer charity in Malaga.

The Harriers are hoping that they will get the Association of Volunteers of Children’s Oncology (AVOI) the valuable expat exposure they deserve.

Jacqueline from Mijas House Harriers visited AVOI and was truly touched by the work volunteers do for the children.

A red dress charity run/walk will be taking place from Malaga Port on July 22 at 2pm, and there will be plenty of singing along the way.

Paella will served at 1pm and snacks and refreshments will be served en route.

There will be a good turnout of charity volunteers at the event and Mijas House Harriers are hoping to encourage as many people as possible to come along and have fun.

The 30th anniversary of the Mijas House Harriers will be in May 2019, and more than 300 people are already signed up for a week’s worth of celebrations and more fundraising for AVOI. The Harriers are also looking for sponsors to raise exposure and welcome any advice and assis-

tance on this.

AVOI is dedicated to helping children of the Mother-Child Hospital, which needs a new Bone Marrow Transplant Wing, and will benefit from any donations the public can provide.

Participants will help raise much-needed funds for AVOI.

Diabetes advice THE endocrynologist (Diabetes Specialist) Dr Gomez Trujillo will be coming to speak to the La Cala de Mijas Lions Diabetic Group at the next meeting on Friday June 29 at 10.30am.

This will be in their usual venue the Hogar, Calle Blanca Paloma, Fuengirola in the restaurant area.

As some will know, Dr Gomez has been an enormous help to the group since it began in 2003 and he is always ready to answer any questions on diabetes.

If you intend to go to this this important meeting, remember to bring details of your medication and tests results.

GENEROUS: Presentation of €5,000 to Cudeca.

Giving a helping hand THE La Cala de Mijas Lions Charity presented the IES School in La Cala with a cheque for €1,506 to enable them to purchase much-needed books and sports equipment.

The school has also benefited from earlier generosity of the Lions Charity who are keen to help further the education and development of pupils. The presentation was made by the President of the Lions, Julie Barry, who was accompanied by Vice President Maggie Bobowicz and several other members of the Lions Charity.

Also on hand to receive the cheque were members of the school staff, and pupils.

The lights will stay on in Cudeca now after the President of the La Cala de Mijas Lions Club, Julie Barry, presented a cheque for €5,000 to Marisa Martin, Medical Director and CEO, and Rafael Olalla Martinez, Financial Director.

They were both very pleased to receive the cheque on behalf of Cudeca and explained how the money is to be put towards the purchase of a backup generator for the inpatient unit.

Having experienced so many electricity cuts the new generator will now help the inpatient unit carry on with its vital work.

What a haven this unit is for anyone on

the coast who needs their vital care at such a traumatic time in their lives.

Funds, donated by the Lions Club, are raised through many Lions’ events and by the wonderful work the volunteers perform in the shop at 12 c/ Torremolinos, La Cala de Mijas.

The next fundraising event will be at the Hotel Tamisa Golf on Thursday June 28.

The Costa Soul Singers and A Touch of Class will be providing a really entertaining evening so do not miss out. The Costa Soul singers 7.30pm, three-course dinner at 8.30pm followed by the Touch of Class revue, all for only €25.

QUALITY: Origins of cocktails not always known.

Health risk of beach cocktails BENIDORM City Council has issued a series of warnings about certain drinks being sold by street vendors on the municipality’s beaches.

They believe that some pose ‘a serious risk’ to health on the basis that some of the cocktails on offer have not gone through any form of quality control, and has been included in a report from the Ministry of Health. They state that the sale of such cocktails should not be permitted.

According to the Spanish media, the report states that the drinks on offer to tourists on the beaches - with or without alcohol - would be within the definition of food and so must com-

ply with overall food production and handling documentation... something that the street sellers are unlikely to possess.

Not only are there concerns as to the origin of the basic ingredients used - such as the alcohol, fruit juice and even the ice - but also whether the preparation areas of the cocktails are hygienic enough.

The overriding concern from the council is the health of the people that consume them.

Although Benidorm has taken the lead on this matter, the potential problem exists wherever there are beaches and tourists.

IT takes a lot of hard work and tenacity to host an annual gala that has raised almost half a million euros since it began 11 years ago.

The wine flowed, 200 guests danced and more than €40,000 were soon on their way to a London charity from the 11th Children With Cancer UK Gala at Marbella's Villa Tiberio. “It is amazing, people are always so supportive and I am very grateful,” stated Sandro Morelli, who hosts the event ever y year at his Villa T iber io Restaurant in Marbella.

The event always attracts large crowds because it is a fun evening that raises important amounts of money for a worthy cause; almost half a million euros so far.

The exact figure raised was not available at the time of going to press, but is said to be over €40,000.

David Sullivan, the billionaire joint owner and major shareholder in West Ham United Football Club was unable to attend, but sent a £5,000 (€5,600) cheque to the London charity in the Gala’s name.

Children With Cancer UK started after Eddie and Marion O’Gorman lost their son and, shortly afterwards, their daughter to cancer. Pr incess Diana heard of the tragedy, arranged to meet The O’Gormans and at that first meeting it was decided that the three would co-found a charity.

Or ig inally known as C hildren With Leukaemia and later changed to Children With Cancer UK which is based at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, it has helped an enormous amount of children and their families through what is probably the most difficult moment of their lives. It also funds research centres such as the new £40 million Paul O’Gorman Biomedical Research Lab at UCL Cancer Institute.

It wasn’t necessary to count the cars in the car park to know the 11th Children With Cancer UK Summer Gala was a resounding success. People showed their solidarity and had a wonderful time.

Lewis Macleod the Scottish character actor and voice over specialist made a return visit to Villa Tiberio to act as compere and auctioneer for the Children With Cancer UK Gala.

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com THE Spanish Legion is an elite unit of the Spanish Army and was founded as the Tercio de Extranjeros.

The Legion was formed by royal decree of King Alfonso XIII on January 28, 1920 and its five battalions filled primarily by natives of Spain and Cuba.

It was created as a corps of elite troops that could replace conscripts in colonial campaigns. The Spanish Legion’s first major celebrated campaign was in North Africa.

In 1920 Spain was facing a major rebellion in the Protectorate of Spanish Morocco. King Alfonso XIII conferred command on Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry José Millán Astray. The Spanish officer’s style and attitude would become part of the mystique of the Legion.

During an earlier defence of San Rafael in the Philippines, the 18year-old commander had fought off a rebel force of 2,000 with only 30 men. He subsequently served

Astray habitually wore an eye patch and a white glove on his right hand when appearing in public.

Millán Astray provided the Legion with a distinctive spirit and symbolism intended to evoke Spain’s Imperial and Christian tra-

ditions. The commander depicted his troops as crusaders on an extended Reconquista against Islam, and later as saviours of Spain by their thwarting Communism and democratic liberalism.

In 1934, units of both the Legion and the Regulares were brought back to Spain by the Republican regime to help put down a Spanish workers revolt. Asturias striking miners were mercilessly slaugh-

tered by the Stalin-backed régime; 3,000 workers were killed and 35,000 strikers taken prisoner during the terrible Stalinist repression that followed.

During Spain’s Civil War (1936 1939) the proficiency of both the Legion and Regulares gave Franco’s anti-Communist forces a significant advantage over less well trained Republican forces.

When Morocco gained its inde-

pendence in 1956 the Legion continued as part of the garrison of the remaining Spanish enclaves and territories in North Africa. After 1987 it changed its name to the Spanish Legion.

Regardless of rank, Spanish Legion troops are titled Caballero Legionario (Knight Legionnaire). Legionnaires are known as Novios de le Muerte (Bridegroom of Death).

Contrary to usual military practice, Spain’s Legionnaires are allowed to sport beards and can wear their shirts open on the chest.

From its establishment the Legion was noted for its plain and simple uniforms. This was part of the cult of austerity favoured by a unit that considered itself on more or less continual active service.

During the Holy Week processions, the Paso carried by Legionnaires is held not on the shoulders but on their extended arms to show their faith, toughness, strength, and endurance.

by Brian Deller I RECENTLY watched on our flatscreen TV - which is really too big for our salon so it looked as if we were also on the parade - the Trooping of the Colours.

This is where the Queen’s official birthday is celebrated with a magnificent, colourful and musical spectacle and I thought back to my days in the Royal Air Force where, wanting to be a fighter-pilot and after three years in the Air Training Corps (ATC) being told by the retired, ex-WW2 pilots and aircrew that I was very suitable, I decided after researching the possibilities, that my best course would be to take a Technical Course and transfer to Aircrew at the end of the three-year course.

My findings showed that in 1953, eight years after the Second World War, a war that as a small child I could remember with great clarity, aircrew especially were leaving the RAF and finding that there were no jobs available for people with their unique skills, and many were having to accept jobs that, after their responsibilities, often with senior officer ranks, were menial and a big waste of their talents.

So, I reasoned, I would try and take a course in electronics as an Instrument Technician Apprentice, and then apply for aircrew duties.

I passed all the written exams, first at the local council offices in Croydon and then at the No 1 School of Technical Training, Royal Air Force, Halton:

ON PARADE: Trooping the Colours

The memories prevail except for one flaw.

I knew I was incredibly fit as I walked or cycled everywhere including one Sunday each month, riding to Brighton and back on my sports bicycle, a total distance of 100 miles or 160 km, but when I was tested for colour perception, I was informed that I was red/green colour-blind. This I found amazing because I had never had any

problems before and at age 80, and I can still tell the difference, but I could not pass the tests as demonstrated in their test-book.

So I accepted a place on the Propulsion Systems Trade (engines) and was duly installed on the three-year course in January 1955.

One offer was that if anyone played a musical instrument, they gained extra

privileges. I had learnt to play a B-Flat trumpet in the ATC so I was told I qualified and the big benefit was that, each month, we were given a free weekend to leave camp, but the others received a 36-hour pass, and us privileged ones, a 48-hour pass, which meant that we could leave camp, Friday evening from 5pm and the rest endured a Saturday morning of drill, physical exercises, etc.

Also our means of travel was ‘Shanks Pony’ or hitch-hiking, and the roads were much busier on Friday evenings than on Saturdays as far as getting lifts were concerned. Being 10 years after the Second World War, and we had travelled in uniform called the ‘best blues,’ getting a lift with so many ex-Service People in their cars on the roads, never took more than 10 minutes.

But watching the Trooping ceremony, reminded me that we Apprentice Trumpeters had the honour of playing the Last Post at the annual Cenotaph ceremony each November so we had to assemble with the massed Brigades of Guards inside the Buckingham Palace quadrangle and then march down the Mall to the Cenotaph, marching back afterwards.

We 10 trumpeters marched behind the Royal Air Force Central Band and behind us were the massed bands of the Guards just as they still are on the Trooping the Colours parade last week.

I can still remember the strident tones of the trombones sending shivers down my spine, playing The Thunderer immediately behind us.

When we are in our senior years it is wonderful if you have such memories to enjoy as I do, and when I finished the three-year course, we had a smaller version of Trooping the Colour at our ‘Passing out Parade’ in December 1967. Next time, how I leaned on real hydrogen bombs!

I HAD now been playing in Bermuda Triangle, the pop trio for 10 years, it was 1974 and I was now 25 years of age and although the gigs were keeping us busy it was mainly in Working Men’s Clubs.

It was our main source of income but like the name of the trio the Bermuda Triangle, we were being sucked down into this mythical devils triangle in the North Atlantic Sea (Readers of this great rag the RTN newspaper please note, John Smith the editor is on tip toes with me because of my John Bull vocabulary, but I couldn’t care a monkeys).

Well here we go! We were now playing in these clubs all around the Midlands and to be honest the money was good, but times were changing. The small Working Men’s Clubs were slowly closing down and bands had to travel further which was a drag, but the show doesn’t end until the fat lady sings as the saying goes.

We had to start looking at travelling into the sticks and had to go through a test called ‘Shop Windows.’ It was always on

CHUBBY CHECKER – still doing the Hucklebuck. a Sunday lunchtime. This allowed the gaffers of their clubs an hour or two at a table on their own to let’s say to get half hissed.

These middle-aged men with red pimpled snot boxes and beer guts that flowed over their waistline like the Niagara Falls looked like lorry driver’s mates or a Russian shot putter but were in a position of power.

They sat with a stack of business cards with their Woodbines glowing and puffing fag smoke that rose to the roof. The acts was given a 10-minute slot and at the end of show the performers wandered around the club to hopefully top up their

diaries for future work.

Entertainment secretaries at that time worked for their clubs for nothing. Oh boy! I am now coughing up blood while laughing! Please excuse me! Just had a sip of my favourite tipple (red wine) That’s better and I’ve calmed down now and lit up my fag.

Right let’s get straight to the point. A few and it was a few of these so-called volunteers that represented the working class people (cough cough, wink wink) were skimming a few quid from the act’s fees and to be honest in the day we couldn’t care less.

The dance nights at the clubs were a rave

and the clubs used to put up signs outside saying full house on a blackboard at 8pm and some nights we had to play the Hucklebuck by Chubby Checker three times!

Funny story: We were playing one night at the West End club in Coventry, There was a lightning strike for the night shift at the Chrysler UK car factory, it was about 10pm, and the gaffer of the club came on stage to announce it!

The dance floor was packed then within seconds of this announcement, the young and middle-aged women were grabbing their coats and legging it before their husbands came home.

These dance nights were nicknamed by bands ‘Grab a granny nights.’ Cor blimey I was standing on stage playing my bass and watched this debacle, it was so funny, just like a dust cart following a wedding!

Our trio after 10 years had now hit stony ground and my great friend John Clarke the guitarist and singer announced to us he was leaving. It was a bomb shell because in music terms we were a marriage and he was the king pin, but it was the best thing that could have happened to me because I finally ended up in a six-piece band which had a brass section including trombone, trumpet and saxophone.

Wow, the brass section in a band when blowing gives the rhythm and percussion a thrill that blows your brains out.

Shoulder shrugs. You don’t even have to leave your desk. To prevent back ache, try shoulder shrugs, which work muscles of the back. Sit upright in a chair, pull your abs in tight and turn the palms of your hands upwards as you feel your shoulders roll backwards.

Scientists say a study has revealed how much another person’s genetic t r a i t s a ff e c t o u r o w n lifestyles, particularly those we live with. It has been previously known that other people influence your own behaviour and well-being, but it was not known that there was a genetic basis for this.

The study was carried out at the European Bioinformatic Institute (EMBL-EBI), and looked at social genetic effects between mice in the same cage.

It is hoped studying this sort of social genetic effect will help researchers to learn more about the mechanisms behind how people influence one another and this could also be vital information for doctors in helping treat illnesses.

Could pistachios help improve impotence?

MEN, could pistachios improve your sex life? Yes, according to a study by the University Hospital and AtatĂźrk Research Centre Ankara, Turkey.

Their study, published in the International Journal of Impotence Research, showed that 17 men who added 100 grams of pistachios to their diet for three weeks, perceived significant improvements in sexual function, sexual satisfaction, orgasms, sexual

arousal and overall satisfaction.

Pistachio nuts are rich in unsaturated fats and mono-unsaturated fats that help maintain a normal level of blood cholesterol. Pistachio also has a high thiamine content, which contributes to normal cardiac func-

tion. These protective properties have encouraged scientists to investigate the effect of pistachios on erectile function as the problem may be related to heart disease or vascular problems.

Although more research is needed to confirm the results, initial research suggests that eating pista-

chios may improve circulation to the penis and therefore improve sexual performance of men suffering from erectile dysfunction.

According to studies, more than half of men over age 40 have some degree of erectile dysfunction according to the World Health Organisation.

Brevas, Higos or Figs?

www.thelittlegeranium.com EVEN some of the locals here do not know that a higo and a breva are not the same fruit! Maybe because there is only one English word to refer to both fruits, which is a fig!

Both higos and brevas do come from the same tree, but they come in different months (brevas come at the beginning of June and figs at the end of July).

The main differences between them: Brevas are bigger and a bit less sweet than figs. Brevas are commonly more expensive too.

But when they arrive I want to use them immediately and one of the most popular dishes using the brevas is my little tartlet with truffle sauce, glazed with Gorgonzola cheese.

To keep it vegetarian you can just serve them like that with a teaspoon of rosemary honey over the top, but I love to eat them with the combination of crispy bacon which gives the dish

great flavours and textures.

Figs can be a useful food to include in the diet for those watching their weight. High fibre foods provide feelings of fullness and can reduce hunger and cravings. Figs also contain prebiotics, which helps support the pre-existing good bacteria in the gut and are a source of calcium, a mineral good for bone density. With high levels of potassium they can also lower blood pressure.

Years ago at The Pink Geranium I remember offering this dish to Rod Stewart when he was with Rachel Hunter. I said that we had fresh new season figs and I explained my dish with enthusiasm finishing by saying well it’s a tart really.

Rod smiled and said I have had my

fair share of tarts, I will have the scallops! It made me laugh out loud and every time I serve these little tarts I think of Rod and especially R a c h e l ’s f a c e w h o w a s a m a z e d a t Rods comment in front of her!

I deal f or lunc h t im e, an ev ening starter or a special dinner. You can vary the dish by changing the cheese.

It works well with Stilton, Roquefort and if you don’t like blue cheese try it with good quality mozzarella.

One of the most famous cookery writers of all times from the 20th cent u r y E l i z a b e t h D a v i d w r o t e ‘ To e a t figs off the tree in the very early morning, when they have been barely touched by the sun, is one of the exquisite pleasures of the Mediterranean.’

Brevas tarts with Gorgonzola, rosemary honey, truffle and crispy jamon INGREDIENTS Serves Six • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil • The leaves of 4 fresh thyme sprigs • 200ml of thick kitchen cream (Natar cocinar) or double cream • 4 teaspoons of truffle pieces (found in some supermarkets) • 50g of unsalted butter • Approx. 375g good-quality puff pastry made with butter • 100g gorgonzola crumbled • 2 tablespoons of walnuts crumbled • 6 fresh brevas • 1 tablespoon of rosemary honey (or good honey) • 6 slices of thinly cut serrano ham or similar • 1 small punnet of rocket leaves • Olive oil and juice of 1 lemon to dress the rocket • Maldon salt

olive oil and then use a fork to pierce the pastry so that they don’t rise up. Ideally place them in the fridge for 20 minutes to rest.

Step 3

Pour the cream into a small saucepan and add the butter and the truffle pieces and reduce and season until you have a tasty truffle tasting thick sauce. Cool.

Step 4

Cook the pastry rounds in the oven until very lightly brown for 5/7 minutes.

Step 5

Cut the figs into 1cm thick slices. Spread the truffle sauce over the pastry bases thinly to cover the base. Slice the figs into 1cm pieces and place at least 4 slices on top of each pastry disc. Sprinkle the top with the gorgonzola and the walnuts. Bake for a further 10 minutes or until pastry is golden and the cheese is melted.

Preheat the oven to 200ºC if fan. Roll out the pastry on a sheet of baking paper lightly dusted with flour to produce 6 x 10cm rounds.

Intro to root-changing verbs Basic Spanish for everyday needs

THERE is a substantial group of verbs in Spanish which behave differently from the standard verbs we have looked at so far in these articles. They are called root-changing verbs. Some people call them radical-changing verbs which is just a posher name for the same thing.

The reason they have this name is because, as well as the ending changes which are exactly the same as with standard verbs, they make some small but significant changes to their roots.

As a quick reminder of what roots are, they are the bit of verb that’s left once you take away the -ar, -er, and -ir endings. This could be one letter, as in the case of the verb ‘to see’ - ‘ver’ (ending er; root - v), or several syllables, as in the verb to reorganise’ - ‘reorganizar ’ (ending -ar; root - reorganiz).

We divide all verbs in this way for all sorts of different reasons, so it is a very important principle.

AFTER 12 years of Spanish sun and good living, we had a hankering to return to the Greek Islands.

In the late 70’s, when we had just about got back on our feet after buying our ancient Suffolk cottage and spending all our available cash on renovations and refurbishment, we decided it was time to treat ourselves to a cheap holiday in the sun.

We had seen in the press that the island of Kos was experiencing a typhoid scare.

I delved a bit deeper and found that it was just two unconfirmed cases in one particular hotel, but nevertheless the booking figures had been reduced to almost zero as a result.

It didn’t seem much of a risk to us, at least not if we avoided that particular hotel, so for the princely sum of £120 each including flights, we had ourselves two weeks in what was then, one of the islands yet to be spoiled by mass tourism.

The added bonus was that our friends gasped at our adventurous spirit, braving the threat of a deadly disease.

‘Typhoid? We laugh in the face of danger,’ I told them.

dictable patterns. There are in fact three types of root changing verbs, and once we have learnt what they are, and a few basic things about them, there really are no more mysteries.

So, let’s get started straight away on our first type of root changing verb and look at how it works. The most common group is what is called the ‘e to ie’ group. This refers to certain verbs that contain the letter ‘e’ in the root. For example, the verb ‘cerrar’ which means ‘to close’ and is an -ar verb. The -ar endings are exactly the same as all other -ar verbs. They are completely regular, and have to be so, because they tell us who is performing the action of closing.

So, let’s refresh our memory about the -ar verb endings. These are: a as a

Now let’s look at our root, in this case ‘ c e r r. ’ We a r e l o o k i n g a t t h e ‘ e t o i e ’ group, so this means that the root ‘cerr’ changes to ‘cierr.’ However, it only does so in four out of the six forms, as follows: cierro cierras cierra

cerramos cerráis cierran

(which mean, just in case we’ve forgotten: I close, you close, he/she/it closes, we close, you close, they close).

So, if we look at this pattern carefully we will see that all the singular forms change from cerr to cierr, as does the third person plural ‘they’ form, but the first and second persons plural (we and you forms) do not make this change.

The reason for this is to do with where the beat of the word goes when we are speaking. Where the changes occur, the beat goes on the root, and where the changes do not occur (cerramos, cerráis) the beat goes on the endings.

Grecian yearn

Over the succeeding years we visited many of the lesser known islands: Skopelos; Lesbos; Paros; Cephalonia, Kalymnos et al, always avoiding the tourist hot spots, and we grew to love the Greek way of life.

Leisurely days spent on a remote beach, then relaxing in a harbour side taverna, happy to wait an eternity for our souvlaki or kleftiko whilst we watched the world go by, contentedly sipping our ouzos.

Then came the new millennium, and

with the prospect of retirement hurtling down the track, we decided to acquire our own place in the sun.

Greece came into the reckoning obviously, but Spain seemed to tick all the right boxes: direct flights of relatively short duration with no ferry connections to worry about, and a choice of two airports nearby.

But having looked again at our favourite of all the islands, Naxos - the largest island in the Cyclades - we were disappointed to find that it now has its own airport and is therefore attracting more tourists.

This is actually a very important point which we will explore in more detail next week.

Just to finish off this initial foray into the fascinating subject of root-changing verbs though, I will answer straight away the question that comes to everyone’s mind sooner or later, which is: ‘How do we know which verbs are root-changing and which ones aren’t?” The answer is quite simple: ‘We don’t!’ We just have to get used to each one as we go along.

Well, I think that’s enough excitement for one week, but at least we have made a start.

motoring MERCEDES-BENZ has been forced to recall some 238,000 cars across Germany after they were suspected of containing unauthorised defeat device software.

Germany’s Transport Ministry said a total of 774,000 Daimler vehicles across Europe were affected by the potential scandal.

The ministry is only able to demand the manufacturer recalls cars within its own borders - meaning more than half a million vehicles across the continent could also be affected.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Vito, and GLC diesel models were allegedly found to be the main cars with the fault.

The transport ministry said in a statement: “The government will order 238,000 Daimler vehicles to be immediately recalled Germanywide because of unauthorised defeat devices.”

Daimler, who also owns Mercedes’ AMG arm and SMART, has pledged to work on removing the software and to cooperate with authorities.

Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche, the carmaker had found a technical solu-

tion for updating the software on its vehicles, so they expected to avoid a fine.

Treasure trove of classic car parts found AN amazing collection of rare classic car parts, valued at well over €1 million, has been discovered in shipping containers.

The treasure trove of parts includes many valuable spares and items from the great Italian brands like Ferrari, Maserati and Abarth.

Incredibly, many of the parts are still in their original wooden packing cases dating from the 1960s, or in their original boxes and wrapped in oiled paper.

Chris Routledge, managing director of Coys, the auctioneer which unearthed the intriguing find, said: “Something of this scale, and with the importance and rarity of the cars they are related to, is unprecedented.

“It’s an Aladdin’s cave which is going to excite people all over the world. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

In amidst the treasure trove is a hoard of wire wheels, carburettors, exhaust pipes, radiator grilles and dashboards.

“I feel a bit like Howard Carter uncovering Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922,” added Routledge.

“Every time we remove one box or item, there is something else of huge interest hiding behind.”

The items were part of a private collection, the owner of which passed away many years ago.

They will be auctioned by Coys on June 29 at Blenheim Palace, and will all be offered without a reserve price, meaning that there could be some real bargains.

Cup fever!

IN IT TO WIN IT: The World Cup is underway.

The top two countries from each group will then enter the round of 16 to be played between June 30 and July 3 and will feature the winners of group A against the runners-up from group B; Group E winners v second team in group F; group C winners v second in group D; group B winners v group A runners-up; winners of group D v group C runners-up; group G victors v group H runners-up; winners of group F v runners-up in group E and winners of group H v group G runners-up.

The matches will be played at 12 venues, spread over 1,800 miles, the largest being the Luzhniki Stadium, followed by the Krestovsky Stadium in St Petersburg (68,134). The smallest is the Kaliningrad Stadium (35,212). Those in Novograd, Kazan, Sochi and Samara will stage the four quarter-finals on July 6 and 7… St Petersburg and Moscow will host the two semi-finals on July 10 and 11… the third/fourth place game will also be in St Petersburg on July 14… with the final taking place in the Luzhniki Stadium on July 15 (5pm).

World Cup Facts: 64 matches will be completed including the final on Sunday, July 15.

1 joint favourites with the bookies’ to win the trophy but Spain and France (both at 7-1), Belgium (quoted at 101 with their array of Premiership stars) and England (12-1) all have a chance.

Germany - who have surprisingly left PFA Young Player of the Year, Leroy Sane out of their squad, are seeking to become the first country to retain the World Cup since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Brazil, with five final victories behind them, are the only country to participate in all 19 World Cup tournaments and the last to appear in successive finals (1998 and 2002).

‘Young England’ Gareth Southgate’s England’s 23man squad is the youngest and least experienced since 1962 with just over 450 full caps between them… an average of barely 20 per player.

In fact, only one other country Brazil back in 1958 - has gone to a World Cup finals tournament with a younger overall squad.

Chelsea’s Gary Cahill is the most experienced with 59 caps, followed

by Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling all with 38 each.

Goalkeepers Jack Butland (Stoke), Jordan Pickford (Everton) and Nick Pope (Burnley) have won only 11 caps between them.

The average age of the squad is 24, with Manchester United’s Ashley Young (33 on July 9) and Cahill (32) the oldest. The youngest is Liver-

pool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold at 19.

He and Pope are the only uncapped players in the squad.

The 23 players come from 11 different clubs with Tottenham supplying five - Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Captain Harry Kane. There are four from each of the two Manchester clubs.

Harry Maguire and Jamie Vardy are the first Leicester players since Gordon Banks in 1966 to make a WC squad.

Butland is the tallest squad member at 6ft 5ins; Sterling is the shortest at 5ft 7ins.

Also in the squad are Fabian Delph, John Stones and Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) and Ruben LoftusCheek (Chelsea/latterly Crystal Palace loanee).

Regarding their 2018 group opponents, England have won 15 and drawn four of 20 games against Belgium; won one and drawn one v Tunisia but have yet to meet Panama.

Will England do well? I think they’ll reach the semi-finals. Then we’ll see what transpires. England has never been favourites to win a World Cup tournament. In fact, they were underdogs in 1966 but inspired by Messrs Moore, Stiles, Ball and Hurst, Alf Ramsey’s wingless wonders lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy for the first and so far only time.

Spain Hopeful There are some experienced players in the Spanish squad, including

goalkeeper David de Gea, defenders Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nacho Monreal and Jordi Alba, midfielders Andreś Iniesta, David Silva and Sergio Busquets and striker Diego Costa, plus Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez.

Spain, for sure, will qualify from their group, and possibly reach the semis… but after that who knows!
