Hotel strike threat COSTA DEL SOL hotel staff are set to meet to discuss when to strike during the summer.

The talks will be chaired by leaders of local trade unions CCOO and UGT ahead of a planned march in Malaga next Friday, with employees up in arms over low wages and a rise in outsourced services.

Provincial secretaries of the groups’ hospitality, tourism and services branches said in a statement that they regret their position but have been left with no choice.

It follows a recent gettogether at which the unions say AEHCOS president Luis Callejon “refused to speak, got very angry and decided to cancel what had been agreed previously.”

The strikes will take place in July, August and September and will not be single days, but several in a row, it was said.

PEDRO SANCHEZ: Is sworn in as president of the government.

IN last week’s RTN, I looked at the situation in Italy and Spain and in just a few days, things changed dramatically seeing the ousting of Mariano Rajoy and the appointment of Pedro Sanchez as Spain’s leader.

The old, supposedly Chinese, proverb of ‘Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true’ could well apply to ‘Mr Handsome’ as the new Prime Minister is known, as he has had to choose a series of interesting bedfellows in order to take over the reins of power.

He now has to rely on the somewhat erratic Podemos party under the supposed ‘pupp e t ’ o f I r a n a n d Ve n e z u e l a , Pablo Iglesias as well as the Catalan Separatist parties (when PSOE opposes independence).

In fairness to Mr Sanchez, he had to quit as leader of the party a year ago because he accused Mr Rajoy’s Partido Popular of corruption and having

returned to lead the party, his words appears to have come true and he has had the PP kicked out of government.

Time will be of the essence as if he can talk to the Catalan Separatists and come to some form of negotiated agreement that goes further than the old government but does not break up the country, then he could, on a tide of approval, call a new election as he has even fewer guaranteed votes in the Cortes than did Mr Rajoy.

Whilst Spain at least has a new lease of political life, things are not exactly rosy over in Britain with Brexit.

The EU chief negotiator Barnier made a very telling statement in an interview saying that basically, he is fed up with Britain and the negotiations as he believes that Britain wants to leave, so effectively stop asking for concessions and just leave!

There seems to be no likeli-

hood of an acceptable agreement for the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic and now the Labour party has reinforced its support for a United Ireland (subject to approval of the electorate) and also wants to see new laws concerning abortion in Ulster.

Let us not forget that the

A MAN has been sentenced to three years in prison after transporting hash on a jet ski to a Manilva beach, and then crashing into a jetty.

The incident happened on September 12, 2017 when the defendant and an accomplice, each on a jet ski, headed to playa de Tubalita.

They deposited 12 packages of hash, while other people waited in the sand to pick them up.

This was the moment in which the police sprang into action, although the accomplice managed to flee the scene on foot without capture.

The defendant tried to escape on his jet ski but collided with a breakwater and was seriously injured, requiring hospital treatment.

The haul of hash amounted to 346,018 grams, worth €2 million on the black market.

AN Iranian couple and their 13-year-old daughter have been held for using false passports at Malaga Airport as they tried to fly to the UK. The pair, aged 38 and 49, were stopped just before boarding a flight to Leeds-Bradford as they handed over the bogus documents claiming they were Belgian citizens.

Police said in a statement that the passports showed “clear signs of manipulation” and that some of the holograms and watermarks had been partially destroyed.

The adults have appeared in court but it remains unclear whether they have been remanded in custody, while the child has been placed in a home.

Uber and Cabify driving dangerously RAPPED UP: Rap against Harassment was made by students from Benahavis STUDENTS from a secondary school in Benahavis have bagged a prize in a music and film competition for a rap video dealing with cyber bulling.

The pupils, from the Daidin School in the town, won in the Compulsory Secondary Education category of the Audiovisual in School awards for their video Rap against Harassment.

The awards, now in their fourth edition, are organised by the Audiovisual Council of Andalucia (CAA), with the ceremony set to be held in Sevilla on June 20.

The students from Daidin decided on the topic for the video which deals specifically with how pupils cope with having being bullied.

The lyrics of the rap also stressed the importance of communicating about bullying through media and using music as a means of expression.

A total of 74 schools submitted entries for the competition this year for six categories covering primary and secondary education.

The award includes €1,000 in prize money which schools are able to spend

on audiovisual equipment for students.

The ceremony is set to be hosted by Malaga theatre producer Fran Perea.

Other winning entries to the competition included ones from Granada covering the 15th centur y Reconquista of Spain and relations between Christians and Muslims. Students from a school in Sevilla also made a film based on the life of women’s education advocate Malala Yousafzai who currently lives in Britain.

All the winning videos will be available to watch on the C AA’s YouTube channel after the ceremony on June 20.

TAXI drivers of the Costa del Sol have decided to take action against rival companies like Uber and Cabify.

There has been a marked recent increase in the fleet of digital platform Cabify, which now boasts two hundred cars between Malaga and Sevilla.

Uber has also waded into the market itself, with 200 cars between Malaga and Marbella now in service.

Representatives of the Taxi Confederation of the Costa del Sol have agreed to raise formal complaints about ‘bad practice’ with Aena, the Junta de Andalucia, the Guardia Civil, local councils and the Local Police.

FLAG FLYERS: A mass of revellers lines the streets.

MORE than 45,000 people have taken part in the celebrations of Pride 2018 in Torremolinos, exceeding everyone’s best hopes.

According to the calculations of local business, the economic boost to the town is likely to be in the region of €15 million.

Every year a sea of revellers defend and promote the values of equality, diversity, visibility, respect and coexistence with the LGTBI community.

The three-day event last weekend averaged around 15,000 people per day in a festival of culture, protest, music and partying.

Torremolinos is known for being a flagship for the LGTBI community on the Costa del Sol, opening the first gay bar in Spain and being a beacon of resistance to the Franco regime.

According to the president of the Gay Merchants Association of Torremolinos, Carlos Roman, there was a significant increase in Pride attendees from the autonomous communities of Madrid, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, and from across Andalucia.

A PRE-ROMAN settlement has been found in Mijas in an excellent state of preservation.

The main piece discovered in the Finca de Acebedo is an oven that comes from ancient Carthage.

The oven is in surprisingly good condition and is the find of a team of archaeologists hired by Mijas Council.

Several months ago the council began a series of excavation works in 16,000 square metres of protected land in Las Lagunas.

The intention is to uncover the archaeological richness of the area, as a cultural and potentially tourist attraction.

Councillor for Heritage, Juan Jose de la Rubia, explained that only part of the site marked out by a geophysical study

A second oven was also found in good condition, along with artefacts from the earliest presence of the Romans.

Councillor Juan Jose de la Rubia said:

“We are discovering more and more ancient items under the ground.

“We do not know what period they will date to or what their condition will be, but this is something really exciting.”

Drugs busts NINE people have been arrested in connection with a drugs, cash and weapons haul in the Las Albarizas area of Marbella.

More than 50 National Police officers

took part in raids on three sites in the area as part of Operation Triana. Police claim the sites were used as sales points for drugs.

Officers claimed they seized some

four fake guns, 10 knives, 150 grams of hashish, cocaine, heroin, 100 pills and €4,650 in cash. Police have also visited four homes linked to the suspects as part of the operation.

Deep clean revealed

by Tom Woods FUENGIROLA will boast a boosted fleet of boats this year to monitor the quality of the sea water during the summer months.

The mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, attended the presentation event held at Fuengirola’s port alongside delegates from Acosol water supply company, which is funding the €436,500 service.

The maritime cleanliness squad began work on June 1 and will continue until September 15.

Its main objective is to prevent contamination of bathing areas and to collect floating objects, oils and other residues up to six miles out to the open sea.

“The boats will play a special role analysing the waters, especially in areas near to sewage pipe outlets,” according to Margarita del Cid, president of both Acsol and the group of benefiting municipalities.

The new fleet consists of 13 boats. Four will be coastal vessels, and nine will be used to pick up floating or semi-submerged objects from Torremolinos to Manilva.

Workers will analyse samples of contaminated water to develop techniques to guarantee the best possible water quality on the Costa del Sol, Del Cid added.

Experts from the University of Malaga will collaborate with the effort.

They said the data collected last summer showed the water quality was excellent and hoped the results continue this year.

Del Cid said she will ensure constant communication with associated town halls in order to streamline the service and provide users with real time water quality information.

But she highlighted how important it is to raise awareness of protecting coastal settings and said: “Last year 14,000 kilos

of rubbish were collected from our coastline. Practically a quarter of which were plastics and another quarter wood.”

It is “in our hands” to make sure rubbish does not make it into the seas, she added.

Fuengirola’s mayor said governments need act like the ‘Jiminy Cricket’ on residents’ and visitors’ consciences.

Everyone needs to know the sea is a common good which we need to look after because beaches are our “most precious good,” she added.

MORE than 70 beach bars and restaurants of Torremolinos took part in an initiative called ‘Fish and Fresh’ from Wednesday until today (Friday) to showcase local cuisine.

Local eateries offered fish dishes for €6, with an additional beer for €1.

The most popular specialities were on show, including fried anchovies, fried squid, sardines and whitebait.

Torremolinos Council organised the scheme in collaboration with the Association of Merchants and Businessmen of Torremolinos and San Miguel.

The initiative is celebrating its third year and its aim is to ‘value the professionalism, quality and uniqueness of the restaurants of Torremolinos.’

A total of 12 districts in Torremolinos took part in the promotion, and El Pinillo joined in for the first time.

Rising from the ruins THE Junta de Andalucia has given the go ahead for emergency works to Trapiche del Prado historical sugar refinery site in Marbella.

Authorities in the city had to get permission from those in the region to begin the works due to it being a heritage site.

Carmen Diaz, a culture and heritage spokesperson for Marbella Council, said the authority had tendered the contract for the works.

A deal is expected within the next three months, putting the start date for the works at September with their completion estimated for the end of this year.

The renovation of the refinery will aim to improve safety and hygiene at the site, with technicians set to survey it.

Graffiti is also set to be cleaned from the walls of the structure and some parts of it will need to be reinforced to prevent their collapse, according to reports.

Further phases of works to the site are due to feature a restoration of the site with a view to opening it to the public.

Marbella’s council said on its website the site had a long history of sugar production beginning in the 17th century.

“The current building is in an advanced state of ruin, although it retains a good part of its original structure,” the authority said.

MY conversation at the weekend with a 60-something Brit, on his first visit to Spain, was going swimmingly well until he dropped two words into the conversation guaranteed to send my blood pressure into the stratosphere: ‘gateway drug.’

He’d just told me that, in the two days he’d been in Benidorm, his nostrils had been assailed by the ‘stench’ of cannabis smoke in at least four different locations, and he thought the police ought to ‘get their bloody fingers out’ and come down hard on dope smokers.

Through gritted teeth I explained to him that Spain had decriminalised cannabis for personal consumption, and that a 2013 report published by The Local showed that more Spaniards were using the drug than smoking cigarettes. Furthermore, Spain had overtaken the Netherlands as a cannabis smoking nation and is third in the world behind Iceland and the US. “Well that’s just terrible,” he huffed. “Don’t the Spanish realise

Prayers answered MARBELLA Council has approved a €1.8 million project to restore and refurbish the cloisters and chapel of the old Trinidad convent.

Mayor Angeles Muñoz said that the works are part of “a wider cultural revival in the old town,” including the Museo del Grabado (print museum) and the Hospital Real de la Misericordia.

The convent is in the centre of the old town, on the corner of Calles Salinas and Viento, next to the Hospital Bazan.

The plan for the building is to create a reception area, an exhibition and multi-use space, stairs and a lift.

€3m boost FULL WORKS: The restoration is due to begin in September.

The Trapiche del Prado was a refinery that extracted the juice from raw sugar cane to get granules then used to make other products such as confectionary and liquor.

The first reference to the site comes from 1644 when it was owned by Mateo Marco and Gaspar Pompes.

The Inquisition of Granada acquired it

in 1720 and increased the number of mills on the site to meet the growing demand for sugar.

A businessman called Fernando Alvarez Acosta took over the plant in the 19th century and converted it to brew wine and brandy. This continued into the 20th century until the site was closed, after which it fell into disrepair.

TORREMOLINOS Council has announced that it has awarded the contract for the second phase of its flagship project to pedestrianise its centre.

The company Sorigue will carry out the work as part of a €3 million deal that is expected to be finished by December.

The area has been closed to traffic since 2015 and now that further funds have been found and the drainage and utility alignment work has been finished, work on the landscaping can begin.

Local architect Salvador Peralta Moreno has designed the project and it will cover the Plaza Costa Del Sol, the Avenida Palma de Mallorca and other streets in the centre.

I asked. He looked aghast. “I don’t smoke dope. I then pointed out that, in 2014, the US magazine Psychology Today reported that the science shows ‘overwhelmingly that for most people marihuana is not a gateway drug and that, in fact, most drug use begins with alcohol and nicotine.’

I then contrasted the behaviour of young Spaniards with that of Brits in the same age group. Here it is incredibly rare to see Spanish youngsters abusing, or even drinking alcohol, but each time I return to the UK I see drunkenness and booze-induced aggression EVERYWHERE. In 2015 the Global Drug Survey, an online survey of 100,000

Meanwhile, the UK government’s resistance to liberalising laws that currently make the use of drugs other than alcohol illegal is compounding the problem. For example, at the weekend, two people died and another person was in a critical condition after taking dodgy drugs at a dance music festival in Hampshire These sort of deaths - A total of 3,744 people died of drug overdoses in 2016 alone - could easily be avoided if the authorities would just act on expert advice

by legalising and regulating drugs. Not only would this put criminal dealers out of business, but would generate millions in tax revenues.

In August 2017 The Independent reported that the UK government was spending £1.6 billion a year on an anti-drugs policy, and it quoted Martin Powell, the head of campaigns at the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, as saying that this strategy has “little effect on street prices or availability.

All the while fuelling drug market violence, and harming the young and vulnerable through criminalising them.

“And for what? Drug use hasn’t fallen for eight years. More importantly, drug deaths have hit record levels for four years in a row. This proves the ongoing commitment to drug war enforcement is not about new evidence it is serving other political and ideological interests. It’s truly scandalous that the poor and vulnerable are dying as a result. The government are responsible, and must be called to account.”

He is absolutely correct, but I’ve given up hope of ever seeing a British government doing the right thing in regard to safeguarding it citizens

A TOTAL of 76 lifeguards will be on hand to watch over swimmers on the beaches of Mijas, the most in the province according to the town’s council.

Josele Gonzalez, the authority’s beaches spokesperson, said the town’s coastline would be the “safest” in Malaga Province as a result.

“For another year we will keep the beaches of Mijas safe by providing locals and visitors with a large number of lifeguards who will patrol the 14 kilometres of our coast,” he said.

The town’s lifeguard service is set to place nine watch chairs across the coastline as well as using three boats as part of patrols.

Gonzalez said the town’s beaches, which include three awarded blue flags and nine given quality status were a “benchmark” for providing services.

New tourism office comes ashore

TOURISM TRANSFER: The new seafront location will be more accessible.

PLANS for a new tourism office in Fuengirola are progressing, and the Plaza Theresa Zabe is the likely location for it.

Tourism councillor, Rodrigo Romero, is overseeing the process, which requires the approval of the Junta de Andalucia.

“We have been working on this initiative for more than a year, with the current tourism office remaining as the administrative centre,” said Mr Romero.

“The new tourism service will be located in a much more accessible area on the seafront, more in line with public needs.”

Charity exposes cat cruelty THE Estepona-based charity Cats and Friends has reported that stray cats are being poisoned in different parts of the town.

Among the locations is El Angel beach, next to a shopping centre, where the president of the association, Laura Montes, suspects that paint stripper and Industrial adhesives were used.

One cat was found covered in a yellow sticky substance that caused hair loss and seizures.

“We will never understand what drives someone to wish this suffering on an innocent creature,” said Ms Montes.

“There is no humanity in this type of crime.”

The association has also discovered that some of the strays in the Rio La Cala area have been found with noose traps around their necks.

Although it was able to remove the noose and save some cats, in other cases they died.

The association wants to raise awareness that animal cruelty is a criminal offence and encouraged the public to report cases to the Guardia Civil, which can be done anonymously.

Water works MAINTENANCE has begun on water supply pipelines in Fuengirola on Calle Violeta and Arroyo de Las Presas.

The works, costing some €100,000, are being carried out by the Costa del Sol-based Acosol, a water supply and sanitation company.

Margarita del Cid, president of the Commonwealth of Western Costa del Sol municipalities, said the improvement of water cycle management had been a priority since 2011.

THE mayor of Torremolinos has collected a blue flag beach award in Cadiz this week, the first such honour awarded to the town in more than 20 years.

Jose Ortiz collected the banner which has been awarded to the Los Alamos beach in the town. The Junta de Andalucia’s tourism spokesperson Francisco Javier Fernandez presented the mayor with the flag, which is given to beaches on the basis of their high environmental and quali-

ty standards.

Mayor Ortiz said the town’s authorities were committed to improving the quality of its beaches which were the main draw for tourists visiting Torremolinos.

“We are positioning ourselves in Europe with our beaches and we are very happy about the positive effect this blue flag recognition will have on tourism,” he said.

“The work we are doing is just bearing fruit. This is not the end, but the beginning so

that next year we can continue adding more blue flags in the rest of the our town’s beaches,” the mayor added.

Torremolinos Council said in a statement it had applied for blue flag recognition with the awarding body the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC).

ADEAC then took into account Los Alamos’ water quality, environmental management, security and amenities when judging it for the award.

SINK OR SWIM: The swimming events promote an active lifestyle.

ESTEPONA’S Councillor for Sports, Adrian Trujillo has been joined by the president of the Estepona swimming club, Mari Angeles Diaz, to announce that registration for the annual charity swim is open.

The event will take place from La Rada beach on July 14 and the council is encouraging everyone to take part.

Another swimming challenge that will take place this Saturday is called ‘24 hours Sports’ and is not for the faint hearted, as it involves continuous swimming for that period.

It is being held at the Santo Tomas de Aquino sports centre and registration is free.

A GROUP of singers from Estepona is set to perform in the town this Sunday.

The Good Vibrations Sing Sessions is a mixed ability, multi background and multi genre ensemble of performers, including an up-and-coming teenage expatriate singer.

The town is looking to make a name for itself in the wine industry and is to hold the festivities on July 13 and 14 in the Plaza del Reloj.

Two days of wine tasting are planned for a combined total of 400 people, accompanied by live musical performances by the Chamber Quartet of the Garcia Fajer Foundation.

Mayor Jose Maria Garcia Urbano praised the gastronomic development

of the town, with the renovation of the centre and the emergence of a variety of new restaurants.

Mr Garcia Urbano emphasised that the wine tasting event will enable people to discover new wines that are limited editions and normally not available.

Winemakers at the event will also offer descriptions of their wines, for those who are not necessarily well versed in them.

THE San Roque Moto Club has closed its 2017/18 season that involved a comprehensive initiation and improvement course approved by the town’s Municipal School of Motocross.

Almost 100 trainee riders have been on the course, which is taught by former Motocross champion Manuel Morillo Rasero.

There was practical, theoretical and technical training that taught position, technique, traction, terrain and jumps and obstacles.

Leader of the San Roque Moto Club, Nono Ayora, said that “we will always try to go from the simple to the complex, from the overview to the analytical, trying to end up with situations similar to the real ones.”

Other aspects of the training include physical and mental preparation, and strategy.

THE first stage of renovations of La Cala’s Boulevard pavements are due to be completed today.

“It is one of the most used roads in the town centre,” according to the Mijas mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado who visited the works with the operational services minister, Jose Carlos Martin.

Film screenings A SERIES of summer films has launched in Estepona with new movies set to be shown in the town’s bullring throughout July and August.

The programme, which began yesterday (Thursday) begins with a screening of Jurassic World 2: The Fallen Kingdom which will be screened until this Sunday.

Estepona’s council said the screenings were being put on in response to an interest from locals.

It is reportedly one of the few towns of its size not to have a cinema. Previously summer film programmes took place in the Felipe VI Auditorium.

Age Concern Fuengirola y Mijas is a fast growing charity dedicated to making a positive difference to the lives of the expat community.

The charity’s mission statement is clear. To ensure that each client’s later life is a fulfilling and enjoyable experience, reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the right support at the right time.

Charity offers hope AT the beginning of the month, the Aloha Golf Club transformed into a hotspot for solidarity and hope.

A massive €46,646 were raised at the 16th Butterfly Children Golf and Ball, funds which will be dedicated to improving the quality of life of sufferers all over Spain.

Aloha Golf Club has been holding the event for 16 years, thanks to a group of club members who decided to contribute to a Spanish charity by raising the funds needed to reach out to families. DEBRA, the Butterfly Children Charity, with headquarters in Marbella, is celebrating its 25th anniversary since its foundation.

Thanks to the support of players, diners and sponsors, DEBRA is able to provide essential healthcare support to 260 families.

More than 200 players took part in the golf tournament, and enjoyed a great day filled with the wonderful prizes donated by generous sponsors such as hotels, restaurants, golf clubs, etc.

The evening of the charity gala was entertained by the guitarist David Cale and the great band of Mr Maph and Simone Elisa. A raffle full of amazing prizes, being drawn by two young EB sufferers, together with a very exciting auction, were one of the highlights of the evening.

A mother of twins who passed away from the condition when they were only a few weeks old, gave an incredibly heartfelt speech about the support she had received from DEBRA, which deeply touched the audience. She said: “DEBRA came to our lives and it was as

ON August 17, 2015, a European Regulation on inheritance law came into force. This regulation allows European citizens to choose for their inheritance to be regulated by either country of residence or country of nationality.

Therefore if you are currently a Spanish resident but you have a different nationality that will provide you with better conditions for your heirs, you can choose this by simply stating it in your will.

This came into effect in 2015 along with the European Certificate of Succession (ECS). This document has

been designed to make international probate procedures easier in Spain as it will be a valid title to enter the land registry.

As a result of this legislation those EU nationals residing in Spain will need to have a Spanish will if they decide to choose their country as the country that will govern their inheritance affairs after they die.

You can also opt to have a Spanish title of will with regards to your assets in Spain. This does not mean that Spain will govern your inheritance, this is simply a tool to make probate easier.

Testators can either specify properties or assets to be destined to specific individuals, or simply make a general statement on who their heirs are.

Under Spanish law it is also possible to designate one or more people to deal with the inheritance as executors. You can also appoint guardians if there are minor children. It should also be noted that the will is always revocable which means you can change it at any time.

He was examining a 375-million-year-old fossil of a fish from NW Australia when he suddenly realised that the collection of little bones in its stomach was not the remains of its last meal, as had always been supposed, but a tiny embryo, even the fossilised umbilical cord was visible. What was so remarkable was he had discovered live birth in fish through copulation some 25 million years earlier than previously known. In effect, he had discovered sex!

Possibly the greatest ‘aha’ moment in history was Galileo’s first look through a telescope pointed at Jupiter and saw the little dots of light reflected from its planets.

www.thelittlegeranium.com I WANT to believe that summer is here, albeit June is not anywhere close to the temperatures of last year. However, I have started working on summer ingredients and something you will see everywhere at the moment is the watermelon, (Sandia in Spanish). Despite the popular belief that watermelon is just water and

sugar, watermelon is actually a nutrient dense food. It provides high levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants and just a small number of calories.

It has also been linked to aid conditions like cancer and asthma. The other great thing about it is the colour. I love deep coloured foods and want to utilise the new season fruits as much as possible.

So while in the kitchen playing with ideas I thought that when you cut the melon thinly, on the plate, it looks a bit like beef carpaccio! So I cut it thinly and served it with some goats cheese and a little chilli and honey and served it as an amuse.

An amuse gueule is like an appetizer or in Spain an apperitivo. It literally translates as… to amuse the throat... and

chefs like me all over the world create little plates of appetizers which refresh and stimulate the taste buds, it’s a great way of starting off a meal and getting the taste buds alive.

Some appetizers can easily double up as starters. For example the melon dish that I am doing makes a great starter served with warm crusty nutty bread or served with a little Spanish ham (jamon) a take on melon with ham only using watermelon and fantastic Spanish ham, its difficult to beat this on a warm day.

A lot of the new creations I make are accidental. We had some watermelon which wasn’t being used, we make our own goats cheese (but I will show you an easier option below) and pulling the two

together was by chance a great find and this dish is up there with its interesting complex but exciting flavours coupled with amazing presentation and it’s really quite easy to make.

So if you are having some friends over for a light lunch this dish served in the centre of the table will be amazing. Even better served as an amuse before a dinner but that’s probably the chef in me talking and it may not be practical because at home we don’t really do an amuse do we!

Watermelon with whipped goats cheese, honey, capers & truffle Ingredients for 4 1 small watermelon or 1 large slice about 3 Euros worth 2 small goats cheese logs approx. 200g each 1 tablespoon of good quality honey 1 teaspoon of truffle oil 4 small green mild pickled chillies 4 tablespoons of thick cream 1 tablespoon of chopped chives Maldon salt Pinch of white ground pepper 4 flat teaspoons of capers approx. 24 pomegranate seeds Microcresses to garnish

Method 1. Firstly slice the watermelon away from the skin and then thinly slice it so that it resembles a rectangle of no more than 2 mm thick approx. 12cm long 6 cm wide 2. Create 4 slices all the same size and thickness 3. Now remove any rind from the goats cheese and put the contents into a glass bowl 4. Whip the cream until soft peaks in a separate bowl

5. Fold the whipped cream into the cheese and then whisk together until it is totally blended in 6. Now add the chives and the seasoning and taste 7. WHAT constitutes true happiness?

We have been slowly but methodically indoctrinated over the last 50 years, into believing that happiness is dependent on material wealth.

The belief that it is essential to own our own homes and fill them with the trappings of 21st century technology and state of the art comfort. To have a smart new car in the garage and undertake exotic holidays in locations that not long ago, were just names on a map.

Smart phones, iPads and gadgets, are all used as badges of honour that are must-have items and have become part of our culture.

If we can believe what we read, then we are all much better off than we were a decade ago and infinitely more wealthy than our parents.

On the face of it this is good news, but only if we are convinced that this comparative wealth is what it takes to bring contentment.

But is our country a happier more joyful place because of prosperity, and do we as citizens feel fulfilled and optimistic about the future?

The pursuit of happiness

HAPPY MEMORIES: Looe, Cornwall.

It’s a rhetorical question for those of a certain age, because we are in a position to contrast today’s world with that of half a century ago.

When discussing this, the Princess and I instantly agreed on what for us was the happiest time of our lives.

We both had seasonal jobs in restau-

rants in the pretty little Cornish town of Looe. This meant long hours for modest pay, albeit with plenty of good food thrown in.

We did not own a car, so on our one day a week off we would take the train or bus and visit other parts of the county. Our rented flat was a small one bedroom affair having a bathroom that was almost bigger than the lounge; with the whole set in a delightful position above the estuary and part of a house called appropriately: ‘The Hazard.’

When we had a rare evening to ourselves, we would spend the time playing cards and listening to music on our small transistor radio. We did not watch TV and there was no chance of being disturbed by the telephone - we had neither.

We laughed a lot, actually enjoyed our work and we indulged in silly but ultimately memorable pastimes like candlelit late nights in our prodigious bath, eating fresh cream doughnuts that would otherwise, as the food and beverage laws prescribed, have been thrown away at the end of the day.

We have never been happier.

I have been accused of living in the past, but when the world of the past was demonstrably better than the present in so many ways, I make no apologies.

Have a dental check carried out before scuba-diving COULD scuba-diving be damaging your teeth?

It may be a favoured holiday pastime for many, but a study has

found that around four in 10 people who dive suffer dental problems afterwards such as jaw pain

and broken fillers.

This is believed to be caused by the fluctuations in pressure under water that can lead to air

pockets in the roots of teeth causing a condition known as ‘tooth squeeze.’ This can become painful for those with cavities, broken or temporary fillings or an abscess.

This, combined with some divers clenching their teeth against the mouthpiece can cause damage especially as in many cases the regulator is not the correct size for a diver.

The study looked at the more inexperienced who dive for recreational fun rather than professionals or those who do it for a living.

The report, published in the British Dental Journal, concluded that recreational divers should consider consulting their dentist before scuba-diving.

SCUBA-DIVING: Many people suffer dental problems.

Gossip is good OK ladies, admit it, we all like a good gossip right? Well feel guilty about it no longer as a study claims that sharing gossip can actually be good for you.

A study carried out by researchers at the University of Pavia in Italy studied the effects of gossip on 22 women.

They found that gossip can be good as it releases oxytocin, the so-called love hormone.

More oxytocin was released from gossip compared to normal conversations and this hormone helps bring people closer together and gives a feeling of closeness.

Oxytocin is naturally released in the blood and brains of humans and other mammals, during social and sexual behaviours. It is also produced during labour by women to help with the baby bonding process.

Eva, soul of the people

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com OCCASIONALLY, a birthday crops up to give one pause for thought and for me May 7 was no exception. The date is just a year short of the centenary of the birth of Eva Peron (1919 1952), a figure who has frustrated left and right since she inspired belief in the power of women worldwide.

When after the Second World War the United Nations (UN) imposed a trade embargo on Francoist Spain in an attempt to starve it into submission, Juan Peron’s Argentine government came to Spain’s aid. Vital foods and medicines got through.

Spain survived the blockade that targeted not so much the governing power but the people of Spain. For this reason, Eva Peron is still a revered icon for many in Spain.

In June 1947, Eva travelled to Spain at the invitation of President Francisco Franco (1892 1975). Argentina was the only

nation that maintained a diplomatic relationship with Spain following the Second World War and offered aid to the trade embargoed country.

Upon her arrival in Madrid, Eva was welcomed by more than three million people. After 15 days in Spain, Eva went on to tour Italy, Portugal, France, and Switzerland. After becoming well-known in Europe, Eva Perón also featured on the cover of Time magazine in July 1947.

Eva Perón, the wife of Argentine president Juan Perón, was first lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952. Eva Perón, fondly called ‘Evita’ by many, played a major role in her husband’s administration.

She is widely remembered for her efforts to help the poor and for her role in getting women the vote. Eva Perón was adored by the multi-ethnic peoples of Argentina but her government’s anti-Stalinist stance hardly endeared her to the liberal-left.

This was their problem rather than hers for Evita symbolised everything the left claimed to revere. It is difficult to imagine a more humble background than

that of the woman who was to become a fabulous success in her own right long before she met her future husband.

In scanning Eva’s biography one is impressed by the impact made by this dirt-poor daughter of an impoverished single mother before her sad death from cancer when just 33 years of age.

A clue lies in the words of a woman who achieved far more in a shorter period of time than did darling of the left, Spanish Republican pro-Stalinist firebrand Dolores Ibarruri.

When interviewed, the woman who inspired women whatever their political views, said, “One cannot accomplish anything without fanaticism.”

Eva’s socialist credentials were based on her faith in the power of the people if inspired, mentored and brought to believe in themselves.

“There is nothing stronger than a town. All it takes is to be fair, free and sovereign.”

Therein lays the paradox of faux socialism and real socialism; which should give the illiberal-left pause for thought.

Minister praises local expats MIJAS’S foreigners minister Roy Perez attended El Club Danes (the Danish Club) to celebrate Denmark’s Constitution Day and said Spain could learn something from the country’s principal legal paper.

“Today Denmark commemorates its fundamental text enacted in 1953 and dating back to 1949 - making it one of Europe’s oldest,” Perez, of the Socialist Party (PSOE), said.

“The Danish Constitution is an example of social inclusion, universal benefits and above all, transparency,” the councillor added.

Perez highlighted the importance of looking to other national frameworks given the political context Spain currently finds itself in.

He said it is important to learn from other institutions because other countries’

founding laws could help us live together more harmoniously.

“We are grateful to the Danish Club for its participation in Mijas’s society and for being an example of how to integrate with the rest of the municipality.”

The Costa del Sol’s Danish Club has been running since 1981 and has around 300 members.

NO doubt you all romped through the translations that you had to do for homework, but just so you can prove to yourselves that you were right, here are the answers: Mi marido lee el periódico todos los días.

My husband reads the newspaper every day.

Mi hijo sale los sábados por la noche.

My son goes out on Saturday nights. ¿A qué hora coméis normalmente?

What time do you usually have lunch? (more than one you).

Los chicos cocinan cuando están en el campo.

The young people cook when they are in the countryside.

No oigo mi móvil.

I can’t hear my mobile phone. ¿Escribes en español y en inglés?

Do you write in Spanish and English?

No hago las camas siempre.

I don’t always make the beds.

Aprendo poco a poco.

I learn little by little.

Abrimos la tienda a las 9 de la mañana.

We open the shop at 9am. ¿Dónde vivís?

Where do you live? (more than one you).

Answers to translations and explanations I like these kinds of translations because they bring up all sorts of issues and help correct those little mistakes that we tend to make. The main point, of course, is to practise our verbs in different forms in the present tense. They are all standard verbs, as we have been studying, and there are examples of first, second and third persons singular and plural endings of the three different groups (-ar, -er and -ir).

Here are some of the other things you might also have questioned as you’ve done them, or read my answers. In number one, it is also possible to express every day, or each day, as ‘cada día,’ although ‘todos los días’ is a little more common.

In number two notice that when we combine a day and time of day in Spanish we do this with the word ‘por,’ whilst ‘on’ is replaced by the definite article ‘the,’ in this case ‘los.’

Number three might have caught out one or two of you and yes, you are quite right, ‘comer’ does mean to eat, but it is also used to mean ‘to have lunch.’ In this sentence which is clearly enquiring about someone’s daily routine ‘to have lunch’ is the more logi-

cal translation.

In number 4 the word ‘chicos’ could have various translations.

We don’t know if it refers to males only as it could also refer to a mixture of males and females. We could also perhaps say ‘lads,’ ‘kids,’ or ‘boys.’ This is where the discretion of the translator comes into play.

Number 5 is interesting - in Spanish we say the equivalent of ‘I don’t hear’ whereas in English we would always say ‘I can’t hear.’

Hence the translation offers what we would normally say in English.

Number 6 is the only one I can’t think of anything particular to say about (how unusual, I know)… except (!) please notice that, unlike in English, the languages ‘español’ and ‘inglés’ do not have capital letters, as with the same words referring to nationalities.

Number 7 - er… well… this isn’t me by the way, and number 8 - a good phrase to say while you are out and about trying out your Spanish. (I’m beginning to sound like Julie Andrews singing ‘Doh a deer…’)

Number 9 gives us a variation on our usu-

a l ‘por l a mañana,’ ‘por la tarde.’ When we say a specific time in the morning we use ‘de’ instead of ‘por’ as in ‘a las seis de a tarde.’

There is no point in asking why this is, it just is, and believe me English is just as complicated where these little words are concerned.

Number 10 - a standard sort of sentence that can be said to people you are chatting to when there’s more than one of them.

Don’t forget that the accent goes on the second ‘Í’ and that is the part of the verb that is emphasised.

My goodness me, I’ve used the whole article up on the homework. I sincerely hope it has been useful and also encouraging. Next week’s article will be about root-changing verbs, I promise.

Norris has F1 in his sights BRITISH prodigy Lando Norris is on the brink of becoming F1’s next teen star, and he is targeting a big breakthrough in 2019.

Norris, born in Glastonbury on November 13,1999, has enjoyed a meteoric and dominant rise through the junior racing ranks.

On Wednesday, that rise took a dramatic twist when Toro Rosso offered Norris a racing seat for the remainder of 2018, replacing Brendon Hartley in the car.

McLaren rejected the overture, and see Norris as the most exciting product of their young driver programme since a certain Lewis Hamilton burst into F1 in 2007.

Their current driver line up is Fernando Alonso - 36 and increasingly disillusioned with his lack of competitiveness in recent seasons - and Stoffel Vandoorne, who has not set the racetrack alight in a year and a half at McLaren.

Norris’ record so far indicates he would take the leap in his stride, and his career so far compares favourably with Lewis Hamilton’s.

CHUCKLING NORRIS: The youngster has a very bright future in F1.

After beginning his racing career in karting at the age of seven, he became the youngest world champion ever at 14.

He was signed up to Formula 3 for the 2016 season and promptly won the championship in his debut campaign.

As a result, Norris was snapped up by McLaren for their junior driver programme, and he is competing this year in F2, F1’s main feeder series.
