EIGHT companies will compete for the contract to install video surveillance in strategic parts of Marbella.

A total of nine bids were received by the council’s Contracting Committee this month, but one was excluded for not meeting the deadline.

The contract will be worth €1.5 million to the winning company, with a timescale of five months to complete the works.

As it is part of the budget’s Financially Sustainable Investments programme, it must be completed by the end of this year.

The installation of cameras around Marbella has taken more than a decade to deliver, despite being one of the business community’s strongest demands (for security purposes).

However, 85 new cameras have been authorised and are to be distributed between Puerto Banus, Puerto Deportivo Virgen del Carmen, as well as the La Canada and Elviria shopping centres.

Local and National Police have recorded a high volume of crimes in these areas (eg damages, thefts, and assaults) in recent years, and so the project will be popular with businesses and residents alike.

Suspected killer of Lisa Brown arrested in London

by John Smith BRITISH fugitive Simon Corner who is wanted in Spain for the suspected murder of Scottish mother Lisa Brown who lived near Soto g rande h a s b e e n a r re s te d at Heathrow Airport.

He f led from the Spanish Authorities in the latter part of last year after being extradited from Denmark but was allowed free on bail.

Crimestoppers UK and the British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley hosted a press conference in southern Spain on March 28 of this year appealing for infor mation on his whereabouts and offering a £100,000 reward.

A new international arrest warrant was only issued earlier in the year and Cor ner was arrested this Monday when he arrived at Heathrow on a flight from South America.

Painting contest celebrates coast

He made it!

FURTHER to last week’s front page about Chris Grenfell and his trek along the Marbella coast with a fridge, we can report that he completed the walk safely.

He took a little while to recover, but the 47 people who took part in the 20 kilometre walk are delighted that they smashed their €3,300 target by a huge margin, raising €11,600 for brain tumour research.

MAYOR of Marbella Ángeles Muñoz performed a formal ceremony laying the first brick in the building of an all-inclusive family resort.

Club Med, which first came to the Balearics in 1950 has teamed up with property owner Magna Hotels & Resort in order to bring the Club Med brand up to date and back with this new development in Marbella.

Magna secured the famous Don Miguel hotel in 2012 and working with Club Med anticipates spending more than €70 million to refurbish and renovate the existing building which will offer 486 rooms when the new resort opens in 2019.

To complement the ceremony, a pair of synchronised swimmers showed off their skill in one of the remaining pools to the delight of those attending before the mayor embedded the ceremonial first brick.

Representatives of Club Med and Magna Hotels & Resort thanked Marbella for the support and welcome they have received and explained that the new resort would be aimed firmly at families and will offer a wide variety of sports, wellness and cultural activities with dedicated child care available during the 11 months the resort would be open each year.

The project will bring additional jobs into the city, firstly as the reconstruction takes place and then an expected 300 staff will be needed to supply direct services to guests with additional support employment also likely.

ENTRIES for a competition entitled, ‘The south of Marbella: How do you imagine the city with its breakwaters?’ were displayed at the Marbella Recreational and Cultural Society.

Mayor Muñoz visited the exhibition which was organised by the Marbella Breakwaters Association and was joined by the association’s president, Jose Miguel Lima, and the Councillor for the Environment and Beaches, Manuel Cardeña.

An array of prizes were awarded in different categories: toddlers; children up to 15 years old; and adults, the winner of the latter receiving a cool €7,000.

A total of 55 paintings are on show until this Sunday.

The winner of the adult category will be able to exhibit their work in the exclusive Wanson Art Gallery, as well as enjoying a luxury hotel stay and a meal at Marbella Club.

The Last Supper gets just desserts ESTEPONA’S Route of Artistic Murals will soon be joined by one of the most iconic religious depictions in history.

T he ar tist Curro Ley ton is in the process of recreating Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting on one of the facades of the Church of San Jose.

Curro is a painter from Malaga who represented Spain in the New York Hispanic Parade with his Quixote in the

21st century collection.

He is aiming to interpret the scene in his own style, producing a more contemporar y and minimalist work through the use of perspective and colour arrangement.

T he mural will be larger than the original, which was painted in the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent between 1495 and 1497.

In commissioning the work the council wants to pay homage to the legendary figure of Leonardo da Vinci, and next May will be the 500th anniversary of his death.

There are now 53 paintings on Estepona’s Route of Artistic Murals, which is a project designed to transform urban neighbourhoods into open air museums.

LAST Saturday Collegium Musicum, directed by Annemarie Philipps, offered an extra spring soiree of light music in Fuengirola.

The audience was delighted to see different sides of the choir and orchestra as their musicians, from so many countries, performed a wide range of music from Vivaldi to Lloyd Webber, showing their individual talents and playing in chamber groups.

The concert ended with all voices and instruments together in a rousing finale of ‘Granada’.

After a delightful evening and a standing ovation they are now back to preparing for their concerts featuring music from Vienna during the 18th century on May 27 in Guadiaro and the yearly concert in aid of Concordia on May 29 in Marbella.

MANY EU countries have yet to begin planning for issues likely to affect their UK nationals after Brexit according to a new report.

This report by MPI Europe and Goldsmiths, University of London assesses the progress that has been made in rapidly evolving EU-UK negotiations, then turns to examine the challenges national and local governments across the European Union are likely to face in implementing a Brexit deal on citizens’ rights.

It draws on interviews with Member State officials to explore what planning if any - is already underway, and on interviews with British residents of the EU-27, many of whom have

been unsettled by the negotiations and received limited or conflicting advice from authorities.

A particularly large question mark hangs over what systems and processes EU-27 countries may put in place to adjust the legal status of their British residents from that of mobile EU citizens to a new, to-be-decided status.

Whatever form these systems may take, the authors write, they should aim to balance inclusiveness with fraud prevention, and to employ smart and ongoing outreach to British communities, including before a final agreement is reached.

Strangled woman rescued in police drugs swoop

by Tom Woods OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil have rescued a woman being strangled and arrested three members of an international drugs cartel.

As part of their ‘Orbaneja’ operation, police had placed two semi-detached houses in Mijas under surveillance because several members of the criminal organisation lived there.

At one stage the Guardia Civil heard the screams of a woman from inside one of the houses, so they burst in to find her allegedly being strangled with a steel wire by one of the criminals.

The woman was found to have numerous bruises on her body with a deep wound in her neck due to the attack, and was unsurprisingly traumatised.

She had been in an on-off relationship with the assailant, but when she tried to finally end things with him he reacted with rage and violence.

The man was arrested for attempted murder, and though two other members of the drugs ring tried to flee the scene,

HASH STASH: Police found themselves with a major drugs haul. they were soon apprehended.

Their narcotics operations had been based in the garage of one of the houses, and they hid the drugs in secret compartments underneath cars before transporting them across Europe.

During the raid police seized 313 kilos of hashish, €12,500 in cash and two cars.

The three detainees are all Polish and are awaiting a court summons to be charged with belonging to a criminal organisation and drugs trafficking (and one man with attempted murder).

Although the project requires final approval from the Junta de Andalucia’s Ministry of Public Works, especially on new access

routes, some removal of trees has begun.

Due to their poor condit i o n f ro m d i s e a s e , 2 3 7 trees are in line to be destroyed, while 716 others (which are healthy) will be t ra n s fe r re d to a n o t h e r part of the site.

One hundred olive trees will be given to the coun-

cil to be planted in public parks around Torremolinos.

Intu has assured that all the trees being destroyed a re i n a p o o r s t ate , a n d that their workers have received environmental training to cause minimal damage to the surrounding vegetation.

United Nationalities of Marbella TUESDAY sees the third United Nationalities of Marbella Summit organised by local media personality Nicole King.

It will be held in a new venue, Velvet Marbella, Avenida Del Prado local 2, 29660, Marbella from 10am to 2pm and all are invited to take part in the discussions concerning how expatriates can work together to make Marbella a better place for everyone.

This year’s event is being organised in collaboration with local consuls and other community members due to the importance of the matters in hand.

Nicole King, said “We implore school directors, presidents of charities and associations, press, restau-

rants, bars, clubs and discotheque owners, and anyone in a position to offer their services to our community and one another, to register for this event as Marbella community members, with each other’s wellbeing in mind.

ARABIAN KNIGHT: Councillor Marchena will promote San Roque’s many attractions.

A Middle Eastern voyage SAN ROQUE will represent itself at the Dubai International Fair for the second year running.

Tourism Councillor Dolores Marchena will attend the event, which takes place from Sunday to Wednesday and is renowned in the Middle East.

The financial cost to the council to promote itself in this way will not be taken out of its budget,

but will be borne by tourist agencies in San Roque who see great potential in the Arab market.

Ms Marchena said: “We have the profile to be at this prestigious fair and it is an excellent opportunity to promote tourism, heritage, environmental and cultural sectors.”

Horse riding will be added to San Roque’s list of attractions at the fair,

alongside its usual staples of golf courses, sailing, luxury hotels, and expansive shopping centres.

Last year the Dubai International Fair attracted nearly 40,000 visitors, with 2,800 exhibitors and 68 countries involved.

The fair brings together country representatives, airlines, hotels, and a wide variety of tourism services and travel agencies.

13 arrested in cannabis bust

by Tom Woods OFFICERS of the National Police have raided a building in Fuengirola which was advertised as a private club to promote the therapeutic qualities of cannabis derivatives.

Instead however, the premises were reportedly used for a full-scale hashish trading business.

When they arrived at the scene the police found 12 people there smoking these drugs, whereupon they were arrested.

Eight of the group were Spanish,

there were two Germans and two others who did not have documentation.

In addition, a Moroccan man has been detained for alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

During the raid the police seized 432 grams of marihuana, 345 grams of hashish, a cutting knife, containers for the drugs, scales, documents, and a range of cannabis components.

The premises have been sealed off with the approval of both Fuengirola Council and the Malaga police.

NEW BRIDGE: To open soon.

Bridge over untroubled water A NEW bridge between the Valle Romano and Santa Maria Golf resorts in Estepona is nearing completion and should be finalised next week.

The works have involved the construction of the bridge over the serene Rio Enmedio and the remodelling of another road which had been left unfinished by the building project.

Councillor for Development and Infrastructure, Ana Velasco, has stressed the importance of the work that will link two golfing areas which have been isolated from each other, despite the development that has been seen there.

Around 2,000 residents will have much improved mobility, and will also enjoy improved access to the new local hospital.

The cost of the project is €275,000 and will be paid for by the owners of the golf resorts.

Ms Velasco also pointed out that there will be further works in the area including the installation of new lighting, water and gas piping, and telephone cables.

€20 million budget bonanza for city T H E m ayo r o f M a r b e l l a , A n g e l e s Muñoz, has announced that the council will allocate more than €20 million from its budget surplus for improvement works this year and in 2019.

She said that the investment “will improve the infrastructure of the city and will bring about a qualitative leap in public services.”

More than €6 million will be spent on sports facilities, while the remainder of the funding will go on environment and security projects.

Marbella , L as C hapas and Nueva Andalucia will receive €14.9 million and €5.3 million will go to San Pedro Alcantara.

A new € 3.8 million Fuente Nueva sports centre will be constructed in San Pedro which will include the construction of an underground car park.

In addition, the Santa Maria stadium will get new astroturf with other improvements, and the athletics track of the Antonio Serrano Lima stadium will be refurbished.

There will also be a range of infrastructure improvements in Marbella including street remodelling , ne w pedestrian routes, and pavement renovations.

Golfing for children’s charity

by John Smith A CHARITY founded in 1950 to look after disadvantaged children in Malaga Province has benefited from the generosity of the members of Sala Group Golf Classic.

Following their monthly tournament members met at the Oak Garden & Grill in Nueva Andalucia to present prizes and to donate €4,100 to the Ciudad de los Niños charity last Saturday.

Chairman of the Sala Group Ian Radford handed over the cheque for this generous amount raised by the members of the club to local fundraiser and restaurateur Rita Feti representing the charity.

The Malaga establishment which is part of a larger organisation which has a presence in

Granada, La Linea de la Concepcion and Sevilla was founded by los Hermanos Obreros de María, a group of Catholic priests with the aim of assisting underprivileged children.

It is not an orphanage but looks after the well-being of children and teenagers from families who are experiencing difficulties, helping to educate them, to train them for work and to obtain jobs once they leave school.

The make-up of those being helped has changed over the years and now the bulk of the children come from immigrant families of all types and are able to attend thanks to daily buses that are laid on by the centre.

Since the Sala Group first opened on the Costa del Sol in 2008, it has been heavily involved in raising funds for a wide range of different charities and to date has raised almost €150,000 for mainly local causes.

A crafty way to trade REGISTRATION for spots in the Paseo Maritimo craft market in Fuengirola this summer is still open.

Located between the Virgen del Carmen statue and the Yaramar hotel (on Los Boliches promenade) the market will run from June 15 to September 9 from 2pm to 8pm.

A total of 10 spots are available and traders will have all manner of products on display.

The initiative is being overseen by Public Roads Councillor Pedro Vega, and the intention is both to promote trade and to support the work of local craftsmen and women.

The cost of a trading place in the market is ₏489 for the entire threemonth period and applications can be made at Fuengirola’s Department of Public Roads until Monday.

World Book Day comes to town MAYOR Ana Mula has announced that she will participate in shared readings in Fuengirola’s schools as part of a wide programme of activities in the town to celebrate World Book Day. T here will also be stor y telling sessions; book presentations; a reading of Don Quixote in the Lope de Vega library; and a n i n a u g u r a l a u t h o r ’s c o n fe r e n c e to be held at the Plaza de la Constitucion on Saturday.

World Book Day is celebrated every year internationally on April 23, with the intention of promoting and celebrating reading , wr iting , and literature in general.

The day also coincides with William Shakes p e a re ’s d e at h , w h i l e

Miguel de Cervantes’ was a day earlier on Sunday.

It will also provide writers with an oppor tunity to present their work to the public, and to engage with them.

€70,305 boost for children in need JAVIER MARTIN, Councillor for Social Welfare in Benalmadena, has announced a policy which will see €70,305 allocated for families with children at risk of social exclusion.

The Junta de Andalucia regional government has approved the plans which form part of the Family Financial Aid programme which caters for those who lack the economic resources to provide food and clothing for their children.

This funding is aimed at the prevention and reduction of factors that generate situations of social vulnerability for children.

THE entrepreneurs of La Carihuela, Torremolinos, have created an association to discuss and progress their plans for the area more effectively.

The group already has more than 50 members and includes the Association of Hoteliers of the Costa del Sol (Aehcos).

One of the major issues which it wants to raise is the need for renovation work along the local coastline, and a robust cleaning operation before tourist season hits its peak.

Mayor Jose Ortiz recently met with several of the entrepreneurs, along with Councillor for Urban Development and Beaches, Maribel Tocon.

The president of the association, Miguel Sierra, said

that the aim is to have the involvement of all entrepreneurs and business owners ‘from the Plaza del Remo to the Rincon del Sol.’ Another issue that the group wants to see action on is the installation of breakwaters to protect beaches and beach bars.

These would be made of rock and prefabricated concrete, placed inside in the sea to reduce the waves and avoid dangerous displacements of sand.

THE Junta de Andalucia regional govenment will allocate €3.5 million of regional funding to Estepona Council this year.

Federal Committee member Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo said: “This payment strengthens a financial collaboration that solidifies the commitment of the Junta with local authorities and will help the performance levels of the services they provide to the public.”

Mr Espejo highlighted that the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration has already transferred €886,991 in the first tranche of quarterly funding to Estepona for 2018.

Councillor for Estepona’s Treasury department, Manuel Aguilar, believes that a significantly higher figure is due given previous commitments made by the Junta, and negotiations relating to that are ongoing.

PARTY TIME: The popular festival is a big draw for many people.

Starlite staff face the music

by Tom Woods STARLITE will begin the selection of its staff next week in preparation for its festival.

The interview process will take place between Tuesday and Thursday in the Congress Palace, Marbella, and it is likely that the Nagüeles quarry will once again be the venue of choice.

It is believed that Starlite organisers are planning to hire 400 people for the 45-day festival (July 11 to August 25), including waiters, hostesses, bar managers, ushers and logistics staff.

Marbella Council’s Public Roads department is currently drawing up the regulations for the

use of the quarry, which must be completed before any agreement can be reached.

Last year approval was only granted two days before the festival, and all involved are eager not to repeat the situation.

So far, 29 acts have been booked to perform at the event, including Sting and Jamiroquai, but the line-up is not yet finalised.

The Starlite festival attracts around 60,000 people a year and provides an economic boost of more than €40 million, while the publicity surrounding the concert is expected to be worth €20 million.

Olvera is considered the Door of the White Villages, located northwest of the Serranía Gaditana and on t h e b o r d e r with Ma la g a a n d Sevilla.

It is a town with Arab history but was conquered by Alfonso XI in 1 3 2 7 , j o i n i n g t h e ki n g d o m o f Castile. Since 1983 it has been declared a historic site, and a number of architecturally impressive religious and civil monuments can be explored by visitors.

Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most striking and picturesque towns in Andalucia, with its houses and cafes built under and over protruding rock faces.

Pupils on the visit were able to ask councillors a range of questions, and

even make proposals of their own, one of which involved the construction of a water park.

T h e s c h e m e i n te n d s to i n c l u d e a l l schools in the locality and will run until the end of May. Ms Jimenez explained: “It is at this age when they beg in to learn in school about local councils.

“In this initiative we want to complement their learning by allowing them to see up close what the mayor and councillors do, where meetings are held, and what the police do.”

A-7 crash injures six SIX people have been injured in a collision between three cars in Fuengirola, in an incident on the A-7 motorway.

T here were several witnesses to the accident which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning, and they alerted the emergency services.

The six men aged between 24 and 61 years old were taken to the Costa del Sol hospital.

T hankfully, no one was believed to be seriously injured.

GOING GREEN: More than 500 professionals from across the sector will attend.

ESTEPONA has been invited to the National Congress of Public Parks and Gardens for the beauty of its green areas and the success of its ‘Garden of the Costa del Sol’ project.

Mayor Jose Maria Garcia Urbano will join Francisco Bergua, president of the National Association of Parks and Gardens, at the conference which will take place on Saturday.

Mr Urbano praised the im-

pact of the town’s ‘unique and pioneering’ initiative which has seen the beautification of around 100 streets with new plants, trees, and comprehensive cleaning and renovation work.

Green areas have increased by 25 per cent in Estepona to 700,000 square metres, and new species of plants and trees have been introduced.

Other projects in the town have included the restoration

of the old town, which has seen a marked rise in visitors, and the distinctive Botanical Orchid Park with its exotic collection.

Mr Urbano commented: “The invitation of Estepona to this national congress will allow us to showcase all our cultural, historical and environmental heritage, without forgetting the social and culinar y delights of our town too.”

Letters best unopened by Michael Walsh

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com I HAD long wanted to go through the family’s old letters; the debris of half-forgotten times.

If I had been reluctant to do so it was because Memory Lane is more emotionally potholed than a Latvian farm track. Hesitantly, I paused before picking up a bundle of letters penned by my late father.

Dad passed away in 2021 and my calendar marked today’s date as 2053. He and my stepmother had lived their last days on Spain’s Mediterranean Riviera. I preferred living in Paraguay as it has kept its old values; securities and anyway is far removed from geopolitical fault lines.

With heaving heart I read dad’s letters. The eternal optimist, his lines told of how good the weath-

er was compared with the climate of his native England.

The happy until death couple enjoyed café society, the company of dear friends, and dad and his wife also travelled a fair bit.

Dad’s lines seemed to grin as he wrote about their having won the lottery of life.

This pleased me greatly. Having been born during the catastrophic Second World

War he often told of an austerity that few can imagine.

Admittedly, all wasn’t well in Europe in 2018. In one letter I asked him about repression but his follow-up had dismissed my fears.

“As long as you keep your thoughts to yourself, which applies to everyone, especially the professionals,

life is just an aquarium and we are content with our lot.”

His letters sometimes touched upon issues such as Europe being overrun by non-Europeans, a refugee crisis and a stand-off between Russia and the western powers. Sardonically, he said that each NATO war turned the refugee taps on.

CLOSED CASE: Not always a good idea to open it.

Dad had expressed concern that the United States was in debt to the tune of $21 trillion. The then euro was unstable and a number of EU states were unable to repay or refinance their government’s debts.

“Yes, there is a massive imbalance to the advantage of Russia and China. No longer self-sufficient we have lost our former supremacy. But, to be honest, son, it is all a bit over my head.”

Being something of a history buff I knew that in such circumstances war was always inevitable. But, I kept my thoughts to myself. Why trouble my parents with what they didn’t wish to hear.

Then in 2018 the West had tried shooting its way out of the corner. Outgunned and outmanoeuvred the United States and the EU had been left desolate.

There were no rich pickings for the vultures that afterwards overran Europe. Placing the packet of letters back in their box I knew I shouldn’t have opened it in the first case.

The property owner is responsible to the Tourist Authority and is obliged to complete and sign a form issued by the Junta confirming they wish to rent their property to tourists, declare the property is appropriate for rental and that it complies with the requirements set out above.

Once this form is completed the owner and property will be registered with the Tourist Registry of Andalucia. In addition copies of passports of the users of the property have to be provided to the Local Police station.

NOT a lot last month piqued my curiosity, except one intriguing, but not altogether surprising story about the killer whale in an aquarium in Antibes, France trying to mimic human speech.

It can now say the name of its keeper, Amy, hello and bye-bye and count to three, it’s also very good at blowing raspberries! These aquatic mammals are not orcas (whales) but the largest member of dolphins which seem to have some affinity or empathy with human beings.

Over the years numerous people on the point of drowning have reported being pushed to shallow water by a friendly dolphin. In the third century BC the city of Tarentum in Sicily struck a small silver coin depicting a boy riding on the back of a dolphin.

Their brains are almost the size of ours and as we all came from the sea originally, perhaps dolphins are one of our far distant ancestors. The most successful of all species to imitate us is the African grey parrot, some of which have a surprising vocab-

ulary despite not having a voice box like us.

I was taken with the story of mice and (old) rats. It seems that a Frenchman, Paul Bert, in the mid 1800’s actually sewed together young mice onto old rats so that the blood mingled.

Sure enough, the old rats became rejuvenated, more frisky and alert. Recently a lab-

oratory in America has repeated the experiment successfully injecting young mouse blood into old rats. Could it work with human beings?

Astronomers tell us that an asteroid the size of a double decker bus passed between the earth and moon on Friday February 10 at a distance of 63,000 km (39,000

miles, but one, 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) across will pass earth much closer in 2029, get ready to duck!

This month’s story comes from just a few weeks after we moved into our new home here in Calpe.

A friend in the art auction business in London rang to say that a painting called ‘The Royal Calpe Hunt’, by George Cole (1810-1883) was coming up for sale the following week and suggested I should bid for it.

It depicted the start of a hunt with the men in scarlet jackets and women in voluminous skirts riding side-saddle. I couldn’t believe there was fox hunting anywhere in Calpe!

No Google back then to help but I did have an old atlas published around 1850 divided between ancient and modern times. Sure enough, nothing where Calpe ought to have been, but Gibraltar, yes, was called Calpe!

The hunt was established in 1812 when a pair of English foxhounds were sent to Gibraltar. The hunt took place just across the border into Spain. The master most closely associated with it was Pablo Larios, Marquis of Marzales. Initially, mostly civilian membership, this changed when officers of the Gibraltar Garrison joined. Why ‘Royal’? In 1906 King Edward VII and King Alfonso XIII of Spain became joint Patrons.

The hunt continued until1939.

“YOUR life,” said my friend Tom, “reads like a soap opera.” “Yeah,” I replied morosely “one scripted in a padded cell by someone who’s taken too many hallucinogens and thinks he’s Franz Kafka… or maybe Frank Zappa.”

I had just filled him in on the latest twist in the saga over my passport which went missing last May. Readers may remember my ‘Gatwick airport ate my passport’ piece. If not, here’s a quick recap: I was due to fly back to Spain and was putting my suitcase on the

My passport flew to Greece, I didn’t checking-in belt when an over-zealous assistant, assuming I was a fragile crumbly in need of assistance, seized the case to re-align it and in the process knocked my passport out of my hand.

The moment I realised it was gone, I informed another assistant, whose atti-

tude suggested I was several baubles short of a Christmas tree and had inadvertently put it in my case.

After I convinced him that I would never do something as stupid as that, an alert was issued, but the passport was never found. Clearly it had disappeared into Gatwick’s north terminal’s luggage conveyor system.

The airline refused to let me board with an encapsulated copy of the passport which I always keep in my wallet along with my Spanish residencia certificate and, in an off-hand manner, said I would have to wait for my suitcase to be returned to me. It came back SIX HOURS later! Only after a week of being marooned in the UK could I get home with a new passport.

I wrote to complain to easyJet and demand compensation for expenses, loss of income and stress. After they ignored two letters, I made an official demand for compensation through the UK’s Centre for Effective Dispute

Resolution (CEDR).

Only then did I get an e-mail from easyJet, apologising for not having responded to my letters.

Someone called Thomas, from the laughably named customer services department, said how sorry he was about my experience but …

“With regards to this issue, when a customer books a flight with us, or any other airline, all baggage becomes the responsibility of the airport… easyJet as well as all other airlines, pay the airport for the use of their facilities, these include baggage handling as well as security processes in place at all airports… this is not only to give a fair and consistent standard throughout the airport, but also to ensure the security of all passengers and visitors to the airport.”

The airline flatly refused my claim and said it was up to me to take up the matter with Gatwick.

Then something utterly bizarre happened. I recently received a telephone call from a London woman who told me that she had my passport. She’d found it in an

outer pocket of her suitcase when she returned from a holiday in Greece.

So, my passport was never actually LOST. It was found by some imbecile working in the baggage area who, instead of handing it to the authorities, simply tucked it into a stranger’s luggage without thinking what grief this might cause.

This was a cut and dried case of dereliction of duty. So much for ‘ensuring the security of all passengers and visitors to the airport.’

I then received a notification from the CEDR that easyJet could not be held responsible for the mishandling of my passport, but it should have allowed me to board the flight with the documentation I had. They awarded me €250.00 in compensation which I’ve yet to receive.

I have now written to Gatwick to demand the rest of the compensation I believe is owed to me, and if they try to stonewall me I will make another claim through the CEDR. Hopefully this matter will finally be put to rest before I die of old age.

THE subject of mental health; its recognition and treatment, has been at the forefront of much discussion in the media over the last 12 months and rightly so.

But there are signs already that the momentum is lessening and that the media may be looking for the next hobby horse to get its teeth into.

A close friend of mine in the 70’s was a manic depressive, which in line with today’s politically correct need for readjustment, is now called bipolar disorder.

Of the six of us who hung out together, he was the best looking; had a good income as an engineering draftsman, and was popular with everyone. In other words he pretty much had everything a young man in his 20’s could wish for.

The other side of him, when it raised its ugly face, was a deep depression that could sometimes engulf him so quickly, that from a laughing, joking, life and soul of the party, he could become morose and withdrawn.

pened he immediately disappeared, not wishing to inflict himself on the rest of us. One minute he could be dancing with an attractive female, and the next making for the door.

Depression was not understood and we could never comprehend how someone with so much going for him

could possibly get himself into such a state, and at times we told him so. It was bewildering, but understanding can be painful.

Depression is nothing to be ashamed of, but the toughest barrier is first admitting it to yourself, then later finding the courage to explain it to others.

Putting simple things off until another time and encountering an invisible barrier that is as solid as a brick wall when trying to put into effect important projects; waking in the early hours of the morning with the hard stone of dread lying in the pit of the stomach for no apparent reason: these are things that only the sufferer experiences and because they make no logical sense, are kept to themselves.

On the face of it they can still be the usual happy, affable individuals that everyone expects and have come to know, but sometimes this is simply a cover for a seething irrational mass of anxiety.

Occasionally the mask slips, and manifests itself by way of short temper and rudeness.

Aggressive self-opinionation is also a trait, but this is only an over compensation for self-doubt.

It is important that people begin to recognise what depression really means and they try to look beyond the mask.

Understanding leads to discussion and discussion is a vital part of therapy.

www.thelittlegeranium.com THE history of pizza goes back a long way. Various ancient cultures produced flatbreads with toppings thousands of years ago.

I n S a r d i n i a , I t a l i a n a r c h a e o l o g i s t s found traces of pizza-style bread baked over 7,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks made a flatbread which was flavoured with toppings like herbs, onion, cheese and garlic.

The precursor of pizza was the focac-

cia bread, a flatbread known to the Romans as panis focacius, to which toppings were then added. Modern pizza developed in Naples when tomato was added to the focaccia in the 18th century.

So nothing new about pizza but how can we successfully evolve it?

Last week I had a yearning to make a pizza, Michelin style so I made a pizzetta (a small pizza)!

I created a simple flat bread base and t h e n m a d e a t r u ff l e c r e a m s a u c e . I added wild mushrooms, truffle shavings and truffle oil as the topping and then added some grated parmesan and baked it in a hot oven until crispy. Finally I topped it with some pan-seared foie gras, a drizzle of honey, some micro cresses and basil oil then served it.

The reaction was amazing. But I can hear you say that all sounds complicated and expensive. But using that basic formula you can add what you like onto the cream sauce base and the results are fantastic.

The cream sauce without tomato is

the key. At home I top these pizzas with slices of cooked chicken breast, mushrooms, red onions and good mozzarella, simple but tasty.

Pizza is probably the most variable of all foods. It can be vegetarian, pescatarian, for carnivores or even surf and turf (fish and meat). You can produce a little pizzetta starter for a dinner party topped with prawns, scallops or lobster for example. It’s a great base for anything exotic or casual. No wonder the Romans

fell in love with pizza!

Of course you can buy pizza and add t o i t b u t i t ’s j u s t n o t t h e s a m e . T h i s recipe is easy. It tastes home-made, fresh and kind of sexy! Bought pizza just fills a gap.

One client told me that she would never have time to make the base and this is where the idea of a no yeast pizza base came from, simple and quick to do.

Have a go at making your own and let me know how it went down!

Delicious pizzetta Ingredients for the base (Makes four small pizzas) 350g plain flour (or flour with grains and cereal optional) 170ml of water 3 teaspoons of baking powder 1 teaspoon of salt A drizzle of olive oil

Ingredients for the cream sauce 250ml of cooking cream (Nata cocina) 1 small onion peeled and chopped 1 clove of garlic peeled and chopped A small glass of dry white wine or dry sherry 1 flat tablespoon of truffle oil 1 teaspoon of truffle pieces (sometimes found in the supermarkets) Maldon salt and white pepper to season

Method for cream sauce • Pour the wine/sherry into a saucepan and add the onion and garlic and cook on low heat for a minute. Now add the cream and cook on low heat for two to three minutes.

• Pass sauce through a sieve into a clean saucepan • Finish with truffle oil and truffle pieces and season and serve.

Method for pizza dough 1. Heat the oven to 200C/fan/gas 6. Mix the dry ingredients together in a small bowl, add the oil and 170ml of water then stir until it forms a ball. If too stiff, add more water, it should be soft but not sticky.

2. Knead on a floured surface for three to four minutes. Roll into balls, then flatten out and cut into 4cm x 12cm (4.5 inch) rounds about 2mm thick. Add the white sauce and the toppings and bake.

Toppings As discussed in the article above the toppings can be anything that you really desire. I love to make an exotic pizza so I top the cream sauce with wild mushrooms (slightly pre-cooked) some finely shredded sweet onions and a little grated parmesan.

HOME-MADE PIZZA: Tasty and easy.

Spain’s ‘ cheap’ GPs heading for the UK SPANISH doctors are headed to the UK to fill surgery shortages. Britain’s largest general practice recruitment firm plans to hire 1,000 doctors over the next four years from across Europe, mainly Romania, Hungary, Portugal and Spain, to ease the shortage of family GPs. They will be loaned out to understaffed surgeries on long-term contracts and will cost far less than UK-trained GPs. The NHS also announced it is launching a pilot scheme which will bring doctors from Poland, Romania, Spain and Italy to fill practices in Lincolnshire. Up to 25 GPs will arrive within the next six months and if the strategy is successful, neighbouring areas will adopt the same scheme.

It comes as more GPs are retiring early in their 50’s and not being replaced by

younger trainees.

Despite the need for more doctors, the idea has raised safety concerns as the General Medical Council (GMC) cannot check basic competency of doctors from the EU as this would impede their ‘freedom of movement’ rights.

The watchdog can test their English language skills and all European doctors will have six months of training to improve their English and knowledge of the NHS. Ministers have promised to train more UK-born doctors, but they will not start coming through for another 10 years and they are needed now.

One in four suffer mental health issues ANXIETY is one of the most common mental disorders and one in four Spaniards will suffer a mental disorder at some point.

Despite this high number, Spain invests in mental health €5.5 per €100 of total health expenditure, to mental illness, lower than the EU average of €7. This results in a lack of resources and affects people with mental disorder.

Head of Psychiatry at the Gregorio Maranon Hospital in Madrid, Ceslo Arango, said much of the population will suffer from a minor mental disorder such as anxiety, but there are many cases which are much more serious such as schizophrenia, bipolar or autism spectrum disorder, among others, and they have a greater impact on those affected.

Arango, mourns the investment in mental health saying there should be more. He said there are many areas which are not being covered by low investment, such as the lack of preventive measures, shortage of resources for early intervention appropriate to the patient’s age, develo p m e n t assistance to children and adolescents or the lack of intermediate resources, such as hospitals and day

centres for these people.

He also wants to see more support in the workplace: “With support and supervision those with mental disorders could have access to a protected employment. The percentage of people with severe mental disorders working in Spain is much lower than in other countries and that makes them have a very low self-esteem.”

The President of the National Confederation of Mental Health, Nel A Gonzalez, believes the lack of resources ‘is very noticeable’ and notes because of the ‘meagre investment’ waiting lists for patients are ‘extraordinarily long.’

MENTAL HEALTH: Needs funding.

Firm and crisp foods like raw carrots, popcorn, and celery help clean teeth naturally.

If you don’t have the opportunity to brush your teeth after a meal, try capping the meal off with one of these tooth-friendly foods.

Meanwhile, gargling with apple vinegar has been shown to remove stains, whiten teeth, and kill bacteria. And as is so often the case, fruits are our friends: strawberries, lemon juice, and the insides of banana peels have been shown to have good results when it comes to whitening teeth.

Also the tried and tested brushing with baking soda once a week gives a natural dazzling smile.

Palliative care is slowly improving around Spain EACH year in Spain around 125,000 patients with terminal diseases require specialist palliative care to help in the best way possible during the final phase of their illness.

However, despite the need, many do not get this care. That’s according to Dr Javier Rocafort, member of the European Association of Palliative Care, to mark the World Day of Palliative Care.

He said: “The barriers to access care have more to do with the type of disease. If you have cancer it is easier because the advanced stage is easier to be distinguished.”

However, in the case of non-cancer diseases, which have a more variable course, professionals have more trouble distinguishing the most advanced stage and that’s the main reason why patients do not have access to palliative care.”

Dr Rocafort also said “There is great inequality of end of life care between the regions in Spain.”

Around half of those who need palliative care will not receive it. Pain is not the most important of the symptoms

Games give brain a boost

NEXT time you tell the kids off for playing too many video games, just think twice as playing could actually boost brainpower.

Researchers have found that spending time in these virtual worlds can actually enhance your perception and attention skills, for people who play between one and five hours a week, being able to process visual information 5 per cent more accurately than those who don’t play at all.

The findings, from a study at Nottingham Trent University, suggest those who play video games are faster and more efficient at processing rapidly presented stimuli.

The news comes after years of video games receiving bad press with studies finding they led to obesity and other health risks, but now, a team of psychologists say they have found some ‘positive aspects.’

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

I HAVE been asked many times to teach people the ‘little words’ in Spanish. However, tackling ‘little words’ as a subject in itself this is much easier said than done for several reasons.

Firstly, many ‘little words’ have multiple meanings depending on the context which means that secondly, it is not possible to find a single translation for them out of context and thirdly, even if we do manage to explain and translate them, they rarely stick in our minds - you’ve guessed it - unless we learn them in a context.

Having said all of that, I now propose to write a summary of just one group of little words, namely single-word ‘prepositions’, and give at least some examples in context to give us a basic idea of each one. I will leave the translations up to you - I have tried to keep them simple.

Let’s start with one of the most common words in the language, that single letter ‘a’.

This has multiple meanings which include ideas related to place, time, manner, distance and price etc. Here are a few examples: Mañana iré a Zaragoza. Tengo mi clase a las seis y media. Lo hago a mi manera. Está a cien metros. Los vendo a cinco euros cada uno.

VALLI SEASONS: Big boys don’t cry.

Just a few little words preposition ‘de’. This can refer to possession, origin, material amongst other things el coche de Juan; Nuria es de Alicante; las sábanas son de algodón.

Another two-letter preposition is ‘en’.

Again this is mainly, but not exclusively, used to refer to place and time. Here are two examples: Mi marido está en casa; lo leí en dos minutos.

Then we have a pair of opposites: ‘con’ and ‘sin - with and without. ‘Con’ refers to company, instrument and manner. If you have no idea what that means, here are the examples: Trabajo con Pedro; corto la tarta con un cuchillo; me lo dijo con mucha alegría. ‘Sin’ on the other hand merely refers to ‘lack’ - una camiseta sin mangas; un rebelde sin causa.

Two words that are sometimes confused, although they are fundamentally different are ‘hasta’ and ‘hacia’. ‘Hasta’ refers to a specific limit of space, time and quantity, for example: Caminé hasta el centro del pueblo; hasta ahora no le he visto, tengo hasta diez camisas distintas. Hasta is often used with ‘desde’ as in: ‘París hasta Dakar, desde mañana hasta el viernes que viene’.

‘Hacia’ however means a little more vaguely ‘towards, or ‘in the direction of’ so ‘caminé hacia el centro del pueblo’, means that I walked in that direction, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that I actually arrived.

A word already referred to is ‘desde’ usually translated as ‘since’ or ‘from’. It can refer to both time and place, as in ‘desde Alicante hasta Madrid’ or ‘desde las siete hasta las nueve de la tarde’. A word which

refers only to concepts of time is ‘durante’. This is directly connected to the idea of ‘duration. ‘He estado enferma durante toda la semana.

‘Entre’ is a word that we usually translate as ‘between’ in terms of either time or place, but we shouldn’t forget can also mean ‘among’ or ‘amongst. ‘Albacete está entre Alicante y Madrid’; ‘estás entre amigos’.

Another tricky pair of prepositions is ‘por’ and ‘para’. I have actually produced a video tutorial on my website www.janecronin.eu about the use of these two words. However, here are some brief indicators. Both have multiple meanings with ‘para’ expressing objectives, destination, direction and use, for example: ‘Voy a Murcia para comprar un sofá’; ‘el cuchillo es para cortar’, ‘el tren va para Barcelona’, ‘el regalo es para mi madre’. ‘Por expresses duration, cause or motive, price, exchange and means.Here is a simple example of each one: ‘Estuve en Londres por dos semanas’; ‘llegué tarde por el tráfico’ (because of); ‘lo compré por diez euros’; ‘contéstame por email’.

There are quite a few more of these prepositions, but we’ll look at just one more - ‘sobre’. Just like all the others, sobre can mean a number of things, though as a preposition mainly ‘about, ‘around’, ‘on’ or ‘over’. ‘Nos vemos sobre las dos’ (about two o’clock). ‘Estamos hablando sobre el problema’. El florero está sobre la mesa.

Disappointed theatregoers who had already booked will naturally have their ticket money refunded but with so little time to rearrange the date, no new venue could be found for that Saturday and it has left the promoter out of pocket and the performers without a gig on what is probably the busiest night of any week.

It is the English grammar to which I refer, where you mention questions about a third person.

You wrote ‘How many children have you got?’ and ‘How many children has Pedro got?’

Surely they should read ‘How many children do you have?’ and ‘How many children does Pedro have?’

I’m sorry but ‘GOT’ is a pet hate of mine as I was taught never to use it if at all avoidable.

As you are aware, my intention is not to teach English but Spanish and I prefer to use forms that are used in everyday speech. In British English I think it is quite common to say ‘Have you got?’ as an alternative to ‘Do you have?’ and I don’t think it is regarded as grammatically incorrect. In American English it is true that they only use the ‘Do you have?’ form.

I understand what you mean about the sound of the word ‘got’ and certainly things expressions like ‘I got’ as opposed to ‘I bought’ or ‘I collected’ etc could represent a limitation of vocabulary, but phrases such as ‘I’ve got a new car’ or ‘Have you got any money?’ to my ears at least, do not sound incorrect.

Sorry to offend your ears! As I said at the beginning, my main intention is to help people use everyday Spanish by comparing it with everyday English usage.

Mijas Bowls Club LAST week, the Mijas Bowls Club hosted the Ladies and Gents 2 Wood Pairs with the first day starting with the gents.

Ten teams started in the morning finishing the day with four winning teams ready for the semi-final the next day.

Friday 13 lived up to its reputation unlucky for some and it certainly was unlucky for the competition as it poured with heavy rain and bowling was cancelled to the next day.

On Saturday however the ladies played their games in the morning in

lovely sunshine followed by the semi-finals of both ladies and gents.

Later in the afternoon saw the finals between Tom Rogers and Bill Gregory from the Santa Maria Club against Peter Allard and John Wilson Mijas Bowls Club.

A very exciting game really good bowling, touch and go each end with Tom and Bill winning on the last end.

The ladies final was between Linda Hall and Dine Warn of Santa Maria Club against Sheila Wilson and Pat Baker of Mijas Bowls Club. It was a

good game but Linda and Dine found the green better with Sheila and Pat retiring on the 17th end.

Malaga Hash House Harriers THE next MHHH run (number 351) takes place at 1pm tomorrow (Saturday) and will be a first as it will be going in to the Malaga Mountains.

For those who have not participated before, you need to take a preferably reusable water bottle and there will be a fee of just €4 to cover drinks and nibbles.

In order to find the starting point, take the MA 20 towards Malaga and turn off towards Granada/Cordoba on the A 45.

After only a short distance, take exit 140, marked Jardin Botanico/Pantano del Agujero and follow the signs towards the left and under the road.

Go across the next roundabout and then take a left at the second roundabout, marked Jardin Botanico. After about 50 metres, turn right into the car park. There will be arrows to guide you from the second roundabout.

The On On will be at a venta with a selection of local specialties: game, migas, etc. The ventas in that area only open at midday, which explains the starting time of the run.

Total driving time is just 20 minutes from Benalmadena, in case anyone thinks this run is ‘a timer por culo’.

Flying high in San Pedro

Squash is popular in Fuengirola THE fourth round of the Andalucian squash competition is to be held at the Elola Sports Complex this Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament which starts at 10am is important for those taking part as results add to their Andalucian ranking.

“Squash is one of the sports that stands out in Fuengirola and one more proof of this is that this weekend we will have the fourth round of the Andalucian circuit and for the Department of Sports it is a great satisfaction to celebrate sports like this in Fuengirola,” explained Councillor for Sport Pedro Cuevas.

For his part, Pedro Rios, President of the Andalucian Federation said he wanted to “thank Fuengirola and the Department of Sports because it makes a very big effort for the sport in general and thanks to that squash is growing and achieving important successes, like the one achieved by Augusto Ortigosa, who has been runner-up in the junior Superseries played in Germany, and recently has also been champion of Spain in the U-17 category.

“Fuengirola is one of the places where people like to come and compete and we have more than 45 players registered and everything is underway so that we can start playing games on Saturday from 10am,” he continued.

SQUASH: On the up.

THIS Sunday, the Carlos Cabezas de Bello Horizonte Sports Centre will host an indoor Fun Fly from 10am to 2pm.

This is the fourth event organised by the Aeromodelling and Radio Control Club Marbella with the collaboration of the Marbella Council and the centre is in San Pedro Alcantara.

Recognised by the circuit of the Andalucian Federation of Air Sports it is considered to be the most important appointment of the year for fans of model airplanes.

The event will have the participation of some 30 federated pilots from all over the province, as well as from Cordoba and Sevilla, who will compete in two scoring events: Pylon and Break the Balloons.

The programme will also include exhibitions, race cars and hydrofoils and a ‘last man standing’ competition where the winner will be the last to remain in the air.

Lions Golf World Cup and European Championship 2018 LIONS from 17 countries and as far as China came to Spain to celebrate the Lions Golf World Cup and European Championship 2018 which was hosted by the Lions Club and Tourist Board of Mijas and took place from March 25 to April 1.

The 72 participants enjoyed in perfect sunny conditions a number of

cultural events and golf on two of the best golf courses - Los Lagos and Los Olivos - Andalucia has to offer.

One of the targets of this event was to generate donations for the Lions Clubs International fund to eradicate the measles virus which causes blindness in children and can even lead to death.

The proud winners of the golf events got rewarded with exclusive handcrafted watches by Carl F Bucherer for the three net categories A/B/C and the gross champion of the Lions European Championship 2018 as an individual event.

The Lions Golf World Cup was a TEAM event (two players from the

same country). The final gala turned into a golden event, thanks to the Bucherer team with all the special prizes and the golden decorations for the delight of over 100 guests.

With the sunny weather, great golf courses, super entertainment and all the friendly people the event became an outstanding success.

BMW Group is to invest more than €10 million in a new Additive Manufacturing Campus in Oberschleissheim, Germany.

The facility will allow the company to continue developing its expertise in this field and Udo Hänle, Head of Production Integration, said: “Our new Additive Manufacturing Campus will concentrate the full spectrum of the BMW Group’s 3D printing expertise at a single location.

“This will allow us to test new technologies early on and continue developing our pioneering role.”

The campus will develop the very latest technologies in the industry and make them available within the BMW Group production network.

Much of the work carried out will focus on manufacturing parts for prototype construction, series production and customised solutions.

There will also be an interdisciplinary training and project area eg for development engineers.

Located in an existing 6,000 square metre building,

Auto China began in 1990 and takes place every two years at the huge International Exhibition Centre in Beijing.

Third of vehicles on road illegal ONE in every three vehicles in the Alicante Province is on the road illegally... because they don’t have a valid ITV (Spanish MOT) certificate.

The highest numbers of the estimated 30 per cent on the roads are vans, motorbikes and mopeds as well as a number of cars that are known to stay on minor roads to avoid detection.

The Spanish ‘traffico’ department have begun to develop a number of ways to flush out the offenders by using cameras to recognise vehicles without the appropriate ITV sticker that must be prominently displayed at all times.

As well as not having an up-to-date ITV certificate, many of these vehicles are also uninsured and thus an accident with a vehicle not covered can lead to a number of consequences for both parties.

The number of vehicles believed to be without an ITV is based on the number registered in the Alicante area when compared to the amount of inspections carried out. An average total of 218,000 should be subjected to the ITV test... in reality only 150,000 attend.

Data from the Provincial Traffic Department shows 1.3 million vehicles registered in Alicante made up of 978,000 cars, 179,000 vans and lorries, 144,000 motorbikes, with the rest made up by buses, coaches, tractors and trailers.

With tighter emissions rules coming into force from June this year, it’s estimated that 72,000 diesel cars risk leaving the road because of them... assuming they go to the test centre in the first place.

Cars, cycles and people

by David Hudson SPAIN’S Interior Minister has been concerned with the number of deaths of cyclists and pedestrians.

The latest incident involved a car driven by a women under the influence of drugs which ploughed into a group of German cyclists killing one and seriously injuring several others. The TV showed her car with the windscreen totally smashed and the front so damaged that it looked like she had hit a lorry.

The number of cycle and pedestrian accidents over the last seven years has doubled. Tough laws and regular police checks have been introduced.

Greater authority has been given to councils to bring in laws and infrastructure for improved co-existence between road users, pedestrians and public transport.

Torrevieja announced that it will have 3,000 cycles for hire with three different cycle routes around the city. In this area there is a large difference on how councils treat this problem for instance Orihuela, unlike Torrevieja, does not have cyclists riding on and off pavements, riding the wrong way in streets or roundabouts or ignoring traffic lights.

Possibly due to the TV coverage cyclists are using flashing LED lights on their saddle stem in the day. The Jocca Company has produced a knapsack, a bag and a jacket which besides being reflective have LED indicators similar to the motorway signs with the indicators controlled by a pad that can be fixed to the handlebars.

Elche’s decisions on safety in the city area by improving the infrastructure and the co-existence between pedestrians and public transport got my interest. New lanes for people and cycles and on some roundabouts a lane was made for cyclists to ride across reducing the danger of cycling amongst traffic.

Some roads were closed to traffic and reduced speed limits. New laws include pedestrians and cyclists having a five-metre width with three-metre free space between pedestrians and cyclists. Also a 1.5-metre distance between pedestrians, cyclists and public transport with a maximum speed limit of 10kph.

The new laws include restrictions on using a mobile phone while cycling or riding without hands on the handlebars.

Cyclists must not occupy the centre of the lane, a problem that always hap-

pens when pedestrians and cyclist are in one area.

Classed as dangerous with a €200 fine is speeding on a cycle track in excess of 30kph, cycling in pedestrian areas, cycling dangerously and not leaving 1.5 metres between cycles and pedestrians, also vehicles not giving way to pedestrians at crossings or obstruction by vehicles and motorcycles in cycle lanes.

A €200 fine will be given to vehicles driven in a manner likely to cause danger to cycles. Vehicles that do not leave the correct distance behind cycles also parking vehicles causing a problem to cyclists. Finally opening a car door to cause a danger to other road users and not obeying the law at junctions.

This is an imaginative decision to address all road users making the roads safer. Now it is in the hands of the Local Police to carry this initiative out.
