British Ambassador speaks at Brexpats meeting in Mijas

by John Smith APPROXIMATELY 100 people filled the Avanto Restaurant in La Cala de Mijas yesterday (Thursday) to attend a Brexpats in Spain meeting.

Guest speakers were Juan Carlos Maldonado, mayor of Mijas, His Excellency Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain and Charmaine Arbouine British Consul for Andalucia.

Guests and the audience were welcomed by Anne Hernández, President of Brexpats who explained that hers was a voluntary group with no political affiliation that was committed, now that Brexit was a reality, to ensuring that

British citizens in Spain and their Spanish counterparts in the UK were treated fairly.

The mayor confirmed his council’s continued support for

British expatriates in the area and that he and colleagues were not only committed to helping visitors and those living in the municipality but wanted to en-

sure that they were treated fairly and with respect.

The Ambassador spoke briefly about the fact that there appeared to have been a signifi-

cant breakthrough in negotiations between the UK and the negotiators for the EU and the fact that many of the stumbling blocks had been resolved.

He was pleased that those British passport holders living in Spain at the time of Brexit (and the subsequent transition period which will run from March 2019 to the end of 2020) would generally continue to enjoy the rights that they have now (subject to the 27 states accepting the proposed deal).

When questioned however, he did accept that the government was disappointed that

Town on the rise wins big on Monopoly THE hotly tested competition for towns and cities across Spain to get a spot on the next Monopoly Spain has a clear winner - Estepona.

After two months of public voting , a total of 16.6 million votes were counted with Estepona storming to the top of contenders with 571,778.

It will be joined on the

Disabled daughter is drug dealer TH E Pro vi n ci a l C o u r t of M alaga has convicted a woman for usi n g h e r d a u g h t e r, w h o s u f f e r s f r o m a d i s a b i l i t y, t o h e l p s e l l narcotics at their home in Fuengirola.

Also implicated in the court ruling are the woman’s husband and their four children.

An investigation was started b y t h e N a t i o n a l P o l i c e ’s U n i t o f Specialised Crime (UDEV) in 2015, when they began a surveillance operation of the family’s house.

It did not take long before

they started to see drugs transactions going on in the home, carried out not only by the mother, but by her husband and their disabled 17 year-old daughter.

Officers then launched a raid of the premises, where they found quantities of heroin, cocaine, related equipment and €2,300 in cash.

The mother has been sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in jail and fined €6,000, while the father has received four years and €6,000.

MARBELLA Council has installed orange rescue points on three of its beaches to boost safety for the public.

Beaches Councillor Manuel Cardena commented that the move is “in line with the action we are taking to keep the beaches in good condition throughout the year.”

The new contact areas will provide a direct telephone line with emergency services and will be functioning all year round on the beaches of San Pedro Alcantara, La Venus (Marbella) and Cabopino.

Fake policeman arrested after highway robberies OFFICERS of the National Police have arrested a 33 year-old man in Marbella for committing three violent robberies while posing as a policeman.

The police sprang to action as soon as they heard of the havoc that the Spanish suspect was wreaking on a public highway.

In one of the incidents, a woman was forced to stop her car and produce her belongings while a torch shone in her face.

The detainee, dressed as an officer, then threatened the woman with a butcher’s knife before making off with all the valuables.

Officers managed to locate the defendant in the Las Albarizas area and arrested him before he could return to his car.

WHILST Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy visited Marbella last Saturday in order to support PP electoral candidates, there was quite a demonstration just a few kilometres down the road.

As the current mayor of Marbella Ángeles Muñoz was delighted to meet up with Mr Rajoy and receive his unconditional backing at the Congress Palace in the centre of Marbella, an estimated 500 people demonstrated against the PP and their pension plans in San Pedro Alcantara.

Former mayor from the PSOE Socialist party, Jose Bernal, was there demonstrating with the pensioners over the pension increase of just 0.25 per cent, although ironically it was the defection of the councillors from San Pedro which saw his coalition council in Marbella fall apart just seven months ago.

Pets not at risk MARBELLA Council is to review what many considered to be a controversial policy to slaughter certain abandoned animals 10 days after their collection.

Mayor Angeles Muñoz clarified, after liaising with the Triple A animal charity, that it was already contracted to care for dogs, cats, ferrets, and Vietnamese pigs until their adoption.

There has been some speculation that a review of contracts concerning other abandoned animals could be taken to assume that the Triple A arrangement could have changed. This however appears to be far from the case.

REAL MADRID star Isco Alarcon has bought a sizeable chunk of the historic San Juan shopping centre in Arroyo de la Miel, where he grew up.

The Benalmadena born player has purchased the upper floor and several lower floors of the building which is a symbol of his former neighbourhood.

Although the business plan is not yet final, Isco is keen to reinvigorate the economy of the town where he first learned and played football.

His representatives are in talks with Benalmadena Council and the Board of Andalucia to examine whether the height of the San Juan shopping centre can be extended.

There are plans for a gourmet market and two retail areas, one which is yet to be built , and Isco has also shown interest in an adjoining car park.

It’s a masterpiece HOLLYWOOD heavyweight Antonio Banderas has unveiled his new TV series on the Costa del Sol. The world premiere of the second season of Genius, which focuses on the life of Pablo Picasso, took place at the Cervantes Theatre in Malaga.

Partially filmed in the city, the Zorro star plays the legendary painter in the 10-part National Geographic series.

Both men were born in Malaga, and Antonio was keen to have the premiere take place in his home town after appearing at a photocall for the show a day earlier in Spanish capital Madrid.

Filming only finished a week ago, and the heartthrob revealed how tiring the schedule has been.

“It was an exhausting job,” he told Spanish media. “Not only the filming, but because of all the documentation and research… the number of days and the speed at which we had to work.

“I had to play the character at different stages in his life from 1927 until his death in 1973.

“This meant five hour make-up sessions starting at 3am, with shooting from 8am to 8pm.

“The biggest challenge for me was learning to wear the mask; I had to become a canvas on which we could paint Picasso.”

The actor also revealed that he convinced the producers and director of the series to shoot scenes in the city where the artist grew up.

British Ambassador in Mijas continued there was no agreement yet on movement in pursuit of work for expatriates who wanted to leave Spain and work in another member State. He made it clear however that this had not been dropped by the British negotiation team and would be on the agenda alongside some of the more controversial areas such as the Irish border and Gibraltar.

Overall, he believed that meetings such as this which

had been ongoing since the Brexit vote had helped him considerably in his personal role of feeding information back to the Foreign Office and he believed that the FCO understood the fears and expectations of expatriates in Spain more clearly than those expressed from other countries.

The majority of the audience attending this meeting (as

for other meetings in the past) were generally nearing or past pension age but whether this could be considered as a lack interest from younger residents or simply reflected that many would be working.

From Mijas, the Ambassador was due to travel to Manilva for a similar meeting and then on to Cadiz Province for a further meeting which is not connected with Brexit.

Prowler gropes three women in 15 minutes

by Tom Woods IN a period of only a quarter of an hour, a young man approached and inappropriately touched three women on the streets of Torremolinos.

The man, 22, is believed to have no teeth and this physical feature enabled Local Police to arrest him on a charge of sexual abuse.

He has been fined €2,520 having been ‘guided by a libidinous spirit,’ according to

the court ruling.

All the incidents involved the detainee following the women from behind before making a sudden groping attack.

The first of the victims asked for help from a Local Police patrol and it did not take long for them to locate the man, who was in a bar, and who became visibly agitated when he saw them.

As he did not have any documentation, the suspect was escorted to a police station where he was identified.

Man stabbed in horrific home attack OFFICERS of the National Police are investigating an assault on a 37-yearold Irishman who was stabbed and beaten in his own home in Benalmadena.

Having suffered multiple stab wounds and a severe head injury, the man is now in a stable condition in Xanit hospital.

The incident happened shortly before 10.30pm on Wednesday evening, in the basement of the victim’s house in Torremuelle.

His wife arrived at the scene to find him in a pool of blood, and immediately sought the help of a female friend to help transfer him to hospital.

The man was urgently treated by physicians for his injuries, and the hospital activated a protocol to notify the Benalmadena police force to investigate the case.

Officers visited the emergency room and interviewed the victim’s wife to learn more details of what happened.

Although initial inquiries indicate it was a violent robbery, the Local Police are ruling no theories out at this stage.

Some neighbours reportedly saw a white van moving away from the house in the corresponding timeframe of the attack.

A COMPLET E remodelling of Calle Romeria del Rocio, near Fuengirola fairground, has begun this week.

The project has a budget of €632,000 and involves a comprehensive replacement of infrastructure, covering drainage, drinking water, electricity, telephone lines, lighting and street furniture.

The existing network does not comply with regulations and Infrastructure Councillor Jose Sanchez , said: “This restructuring, in addition to the expansion of pavements and the conversion of the road into a oneway street, will almost double parking capacity. “ We hope that within two months the entire area will be transformed.”

OFFICERS from the National Police have arrested a man in Estepona for growing and selling marihuana from his house.

A raid on the house saw police seize 1,058 grams of marihuana buds of the ‘psychedelic’ and ‘widow’ variety, over €50,000 in cash and equipment related to the cultivation, collection and sale of the drug.

An investigation and various inquiries led officers to the house in question, and the detainee has been charged with drug trafficking and the misuse of electric power.

Growing calls to scale up Fish Alley FISH ALLEY, or Calle del Hambre (Hunger Street) to locals, has been offering up a wide variety of quality food for over 45 years.

This area is a concentration of restaurants and narrow streets parallel to the seafront in the old town of Fuengirola, and its beloved status has led to calls for it to have a sign put up and to feature on town maps.

Citizens party councillor, Javier Toro, met with restaurant owners recently to launch his campaign for the official recognition of Fish Alley.

Mr Toro points out that many people have heard of it but have no way of finding it easily, and a glance at queries on TripAdvisor appears to prove him right.

One million tonnes of waste will need to be moved to a new location, although the destination remains unclear.

The positive plans for this area of Torremolinos were initially announced in 2017, and the recent confirmation on the investment is welcome news for residents.

Derelict hotel to go to auction for €14.3 million TO R R E M O L I N O S Council is to auction off the Los Alamos Hotel and the adjoining land for €14.3 million.

The process will involve the sale of an area of around 80,000 square metres, and will take place on April 18 at the local treasury office.

An auction last November for the building was cancelled in order to provide more time for the entry of bidding documents.

Los Alamos Hotel is located at the entrance of To r r e m o l i n o s from the east, a few metres from the beach, and has two sports fields, a warehouse and a parking lot.

However, it has been in a state of disrepair since the company that managed it filed for bankruptcy in 2014.

Residents have voiced their concerns over the safety of the building, due to the flammable material within and the proximity of a petrol station nearby.

Beach bar breakthrough THE beach bars of Mijas are to be officially recognised after almost 40 years of waiting.

Around 30 establishments will benefit from the legal changes, and Town Planning Councillor Andres Ruiz said: “ The process has been long but it had to be done thoroughly to provide guarantees to these coastal entrepreneurs.

“In addition to generating employment, these businesses enrich

the environment of Mijas and attract tourists to our shores.”

T he beach bars will now have legal protection from the council t h a n k s t o t h e a m e n d m e n t o f A r t i c l e 1 3 5 o f t h e G e n e ra l U r b a n Plan.

T hey will also have the freedom to invest in and improve their premises without the need to jump through administrative hoops on an annual basis.

Current plans have the opening of the new res o r t s c h e d u l e d for M ay 2020, and the project will also represent the i n a u g u ra l I ko s I n f i n i te Lifestyle experience.

Ikos Andalucia will have more than 400 rooms and suites distributed in seven buildings, with 70,000 square metres of facilities and gardens for guests to relax in.

It will feature eight restaurants as well as a theatre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sports facilities, and a spa.

Mijas walkway at risk of collapse THE dangerous deterioration of the pedestrian walkway on the A-7 in Mijas has caused consternation in the area.

Mijas’ councillor for Infrastructure, Jose Carlos Martin, commissioned a report on the condition of the walkway a few months ago, but it was not a thorough study.

“No one says that the walkway will collapse tomorrow, but if restoration work is not undertaken now, we do not know what will happen in the medium term,” said Mr Martin.

He added that a pedestrian bridge in a tourist area needed to

be in a healthy condition, and that immediate action was therefore necessary.

As a result, Mr Martin will be writing to the central government’s Ministry of Infrastructure to request the necessary funding.

The walkway is located at the entrance to Fuengirola and the town’s C i t i z e n s C o u n c i l l o r, J a v i e r To r o , wrote to the State Highway Unit and said: “This overpass has the same deficiencies, which has worsened over time and may present a dangerous situation for locals.”

NAT IONAL POLICE have dismantled a suspected international group of alleged drug traffickers in Malaga Province that are believed to have been operating between Spain and a number of other European countries.

T here modus operandi was to use what has been described as the ‘Go Fast’ system of transporting the narcotics. T his involves the drugs being transported in a small convoy of vehicles, with one containing the illegal substances while the other escort car goes ahead to check for possible police patrols fur ther along their route.

and 20 kilos of marihuana.

Overall, this dedicated operation against drug trafficking has so far seized 2,760 kilos of hashish, the 20 kilos of marihuana, and €17,000 in cash. Four vehicles have also been impounded.

A total of eight Spanish and French men aged between 22 and 54 have been arrested, not only for suspected drug trafficking but possessing fake documents and for the offence of belonging to a criminal gang.

Costa del Rain fills water reserves

by Tom Woods MARBELL A will head into Holy Week, the first big tourist event in the calendar, with its water reser ves in rude health.

The La Concepcion reservoir which serves 11 towns of the western coast including Marbella, Fuengirola and Torremolinos, is currently at 94 per cent of its capacity.

Only a month ago emergency measures were being put in place in the event of a drought in the region.

In what will be welcome news for all across the province, current water reserves are sufficient to cover the entire summer season regardless of future weather conditions.

Springs, streams and rivers have been brought back to life, enriching parks and attracting visitors.

Built in 1972, the La Concepcion reservoir has been earmarked to be expanded in size, but plans remain in their early stages.

• Equally, some of insurance or pension providers have never been regulated to operate in Spain (Old Mutual Isle of Man, Premier Group Isle of Man, Generali Worldwide Insurance Guernsey, RL 360º etc.), thus falling foul of Spanish laws that declare all such policies in violation of national laws and consequently, null and void.

• Very often, investments are carried out via ‘life-insurance/assurance companies’ that provided wrappers, whole-of-life or unitlinked policies. These policies are linked to an investment portfolio.

• Whether offered validly in Spain or not, life insurance policies linked to an investment are being declared void by the Spanish Supreme Court because they do not consider them life insurance policies. The reasons? Well, the calculation of the premium and payout lack ‘actuarial’ methodology, there is no transfer of risk from

insured to insurer and it is irrelevant for the insurer if the insured party lives over a certain date, or dies.

• Courts ruling on the nullity and voidness of a life insurance policy will order the company to reimburse the premium in full (minus any surrenders made), plus annual legal interest and without detraction of fees or commissions charged.

• Financial or insurance mis-selling can be said to be automatic where the agents are not regulated (nobody can provide valid advice if not regulated). This violation of mandatory laws implies the responsibility of the principal (i.e. insurance or pension providers).

• Claimants should aim for Insurers, Investment Funds and Pension Providers.

• Lawyers should be able to identify the best way forward, always aiming for compensation (and not retribution).

Caring for the vulnerable M A I T I N E PA L i s a n o n profit organisation in Katmandu, Nepal, founded by Anurada Koirala in 1993.

The organisation's main objective is to provide a comprehensive prevention for children and young women being trafficked by awareness p ro g ra m m e s i n t h e v i l la ges and collaborat ion with police and authorities along with rescuing and rehabilitation as well as taking legal actions a ga i n s t t h e t ra f f i c k e r s .

So far Maiti Nepal has rescued over 35,000 children and young women.

It is estimated that between150,000 and 3 0 0 , 0 0 0 Ne p a l e s e c h i l dren and women are held as sex slaves in captivity i n I n d i a t o d a y. A g e s ra n g e f ro m s e v e n t o 2 4

and they are forced to ser ve up to 50 men each d a y. M o s t o f t h e m a r e kept in cages.

Most popular are the young girls between nine and 12 years of age. Human trafficking is a fast growing industr y and c l o s e to o v e r t a k i n g t h e arms trade.

Anuradha K oirala has w o n s e v e ra l aw a rd s fo r her heroic work: CNN Hero of the year 2010, M o t h e r Te r e s a A w a r d 2014, PADMA Shri award 2017 and she has just last week been elected governor of the third district which will give her a g re at p o s i t i o n to i n f l u ence.

Her refuge in Katmandu is home to close to 500 children and young women today and if they had more funds and

space she would take in more. T he refuge provides more than just a home - medical care, rehabilitation, schooling and an HIV centre for those returned infected with the decease.

Maiti Nepal also operate 12 border transit homes along the Indian Nepali border.

The volunteer workers patrol the b o r d e r, where they manage to intercept approximately 120 people per month before getting trafficked out of Nepal.

All medical and scientific reports and photographs of Dr Kelly’s body were classified for 70 years by Lord Hutton after the death, for reasons unspecified.

In 1984, Hilda Murrell, a British anti-nuclear campaigner was abducted and found murdered five miles from her Shropshire home.

She had planned to present a paper on radioactive waste management at the Sizewell B Inquiry, the first public planning inquiry into a new British nuclear power plant.

Her car, in which she was kidnapped, was discovered in a country lane five miles away and her body was found in a field nearby. A police investigation failed. It was proposed she was killed by British Intelligence as part of a cover operation against nuclear protesters.

Andrew George a 16-year-old local labourer was charged with her killing and sentenced to life imprisonment. His nephew, Robert Green, decided New Zealand might be a safer place to live.

Dr David Kelly was an expert in biological warfare and a UN weapons inspector in Iraq, who it is claimed committed suicide in July 2003.

Kelly strongly disagreed with government spin that Iraq President Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. After being pilloried by a parliamentary court the scientist told friends that ‘many dark actors are playing games.’

Later that day he was found dead with a cut to his wrist. At the time of his death, he was writing a book.

Dr Kelly intended to reveal his warning to then Prime Minister Tony Blair, that such weapons didn’t exist, weeks before the Iraq War. His computers were later seized by police.

An official inquest was started but suspended. Experts believe Kelly may have been murdered and demanded a full inquest into his death.

A Scottish Sunday Express frontpage article alleged he’d uncovered evidence of a paedophile ring in Westminster during the 1980’s, and he may have been murdered to prevent him going public.

Airey Neave, MP died on March 30, 1979 when a magnetic car bomb exploded under his car as he drove out of the Palace of Westminster car park. The Irish National Liberation Army (INLA), a republican paramilitary group, dubiously claimed responsibility.

Insider journalist Kevin Cahill suggested INLA did not kill Neave. It was instead an inside job carried out by MI6 agents working with the CIA. He cited Neave’s attempts to prosecute senior figures in the intelligence establishment for corruption as motivation. Ulster Unionist MP Enoch Powell claimed in a 1984 interview with The Guardian the American deep state had killed Neave.

Also every Thursday they meet at the Oasis bar in Mijas Pueblo, located at the entrance to the village from 11am to 1pm and every Friday they meet at the La Cala Grill in La Cala de Mijas also from 11am to 1pm.

The Age Concern ethos that they are an extended family - and family look out for each other. They have weekly get togethers where

YOU need to be of a certain age - practically a fossil, dare I say it - to remember comedian, musician and radio star Jimmy Edwards. His most outstanding feature was one of the most prodigious moustaches on the planet.

His facial equivalent of Japanese knotweed went way past his ears and would have engulfed his friend’s faces if they remained motionless for long enough.

His name came up during a recent conversation I had with a UK holidaymaker, who reckoned, given a year or so, I could be sporting a moustache every bit as luxuriant as Jimmy’s. “Possibly,” I replied, “but I’d much rather have one like Salvador Dali’s. And, as you can see, I’m almost halfway there already.”

The next question was “what do you use to get your ‘tache to such perfect points?” I replied that there are so many products on the market that one is spoiled for choice. It’s difficult to keep up with the number of waxes, oils, balms and gels being produced to satisfy an escalating demand.

This was confirmed by Alun Withey, a British academic and a self-styled beard historian who recently said that beard care toiletries are among the fastest selling products

Withey reckons this is part of a historical cycle, but the current incarnation is different from its predecessors.

“In the 18th century they disappeared and around 1850 they were back with a vengeance,” Withey said. Victorian-era beards lasted five decades, and the current beard wave has been the longest for at least 30 years, he added.

Many of the products on offer don’t come cheap. For example, there’s a fella who trades on eBay who is currently selling one ounce of Layrite Super Hold for £99.99, plus £8.00 postage. I think he might be having a laugh because I use this gunk, and, via other

eBayers, have never paid more than £16.00 (postage included) - and that’s for four-ounce tubs.

But does one really need expensive waxes and gels to sculpt the perfect handlebar moustache? Certainly not. Members of the Handlebar Club, launched in London by Jimmy Edwards in April 1947 - two months after my birth - offer a variety of suggestions.

One tells of a man who used - titter ye not! peanut butter! Another writes “I am a Canadian handlebar moustache sporter. Have not found moustache wax, but have been using toilet bowl seal wax. This wax has no odour, spreads colourless, and does not cause potty mouth. Best part about toilet bowl wax is the price, less than a Canadian looney [dollar]

and you get about half a pound.”

Someone from Pennsylvania suggested bog standard soap, but a Brit responded: “The trouble with it, in England at least, is that it is completely useless if you have to go out in the rain. One of our members used just soap when he ran out of wax but when the rain came down it foamed up and made him look as though he was rabid!”

When I discovered the existence of the Handlebar Club - cheekily created by the gay war hero Jimmy Edwards for men “with graspable extremities” - I immediately vowed to sign up as a member because the club is a charity that raises money mainly for ex-servicemen.

Maybe I could even start a nest in Benidorm. (Yes, the club’s branches really are called nests.) Currently there are three: in the East Midlands, Sweden and Norway. These nests conduct their own activities whilst keeping a close contact with the main body in London.

But then I discovered that ‘beards’, ‘chin strips’ and ‘soul patches’ are strictly prohibited. As I have spent years nurturing my pointy white goatee, I guess will have to make do and simply become a Friend of the Handlebar Club for an annual subscription of £10.00 (roughly the price of three jars or peanut butter or eight pounds of toilet bowl wax).

I CANNOT help admiring athletes who through sacrifice and self-denial propel themselves to the top of their chosen sport.

I’m not talking about professional footballers of course, who do little to justify their astronomical salaries; sulk like petulant children when an opponent as much as flicks a bogey at them, and often have little between their ears other than muscle and bone.

No I’m talking about the genuine athletes who use the natural abilities they have been blessed with and hone them to perfection in order to become the best in their field.

I also envy them greatly, because not having been born with any semblance of athletic prowess (my nickname at school was ‘galloping hairpin’) I never experienced the excitement of competing in any sporting event, and no matter what any of my football or rugby orientated ex-school chums think now; individuals like me were often sidelined and even picked on by certain teachers because of our failings.

ALTERNATIVE SPORT: If only ‘Fly’ was an Olympic event.

I exaggerate slightly, because having been press-ganged into the interhouse cross country race one year, I came sixth. But that was the zenith of my sporting achievements, apart from wielding the winning conker in the 1957 playground championships.

In one instance, our rugby master, a We l s h b u l l y w h o w o u l d h a v e b e e n more suited working as a border guard in North Korea, gave me a hefty kick in my nether regions because I wasn’t positioned correctly in the scrum.

It hurt and these days he would have found himself in serious trouble and at the very least, looking for another job.

But it was just another incident in the life of the galloping hairpin.

However there was one schoolboy game that, for reasons I still cannot fathom, I found I was very good at. It was called ‘Fly’.

‘Fly’ was a sort of leapfrog with A levels. The ‘stool’, as the kid who had been nominated as bender was called, positioned himself accordingly and the combatants took turns to make the leap, and where each landed, the stool would reposition further away making the next jump more difficult.

The winner was the lad who made the final successful jump without crashing into the stool, and marking a new position that made it impossible or undesirable for the other competitors to attempt.

Built like a pencil and not caring about a bit of blood, the winner was usually me, and bearing in mind that the game was played either on a playground’s asphalt surface or the street, there were many bruises and scrapes.

My only regret was that ‘Fly’ never became an Olympic event.

www.thelittlegeranium.com ABOUT a decade ago I was patron of the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds).

I had to host a conference at one of the nature reserves in the UK and I was going to talk about my love of wildlife and about my new menu called Early Bird, which comes from the old English

proverb… the early bird catches the worm.

True because when I go shopping for fish if I arrive early I get the best choice and prices. Arrive late and demand is greater, price is higher and choice is less.

Anyway to get back to the story I was to announce my new Early Bird menu sponsored by the RSPB and talk about the beauty of natural wildlife. Two stories and only a few minutes to say both, so I started out by saying… let’s kill two birds with one stone, meaning to succeed in achieving two things in one single action.

Well the room was full of older people and their mouths fell open. The atmosphere turned icy as I tried to explain it was a joke, making it even worse! The RSPB never contacted me again.

So on the early bird theme, we have a menu at The Little Geranium in La Cala to encourage early diners to eat great food and save them money. In fact we

don’t promote it by offering it in the restaurant (you have to request it when reserving a table) but that’s because whilst it helps turnover it doesn’t help profit!

It’s an offer to get people in early as otherwise a table might stay empty until say nine’ish. Most early birds have wine and drinks and so I’m happy with that.

It’s a four-course menu with a breadboard selection, chef’s amuse, a choice of starter, a choice of main course and dessert for €35.

At the moment one of the main course choices is beef Stroganoff. Stroganoff, or rather Stroganov, is a Russian recipe made with pieces of beef cooked in a sauce with sour cream (smetana), mustard and onions, originating from the mid 19th century (somewhere around the 1870’s.)

Over the years it has had many variations, the original recipe serves it

with rice, but I have seen it served with pasta in New York and many recipes now include mushrooms, which mine does too.

My wife (Michele) loves Stroganoff but she doesn’t eat a lot of meat. Last weekend we were out and it was on the menu so she chose it. The meat was chewy, the sauce was over-thick and flavourless and it cost nearly as much as our whole Early Bird menu, just for that one plate!

We left the beachside restaurant and I promised to cook her my Stroganoff the next evening. “Why don’t you write about it” Michele said? “Maybe then other restaurants would read it and copy it and then I can eat it when I’m out!” “Good idea” I said, so here it is, classic Stroganoff with a little twist.

For the Stroganoff (ingredients for two) 75g unsalted butter 2tbsp light olive oil 1 white onion, finely sliced 1 red onion, finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 200g wild or field mushrooms, sliced 400g beef fillet, cut into small strips 1 flat tbsp smoked paprika, a little black pepper and Maldon salt 150ml approx of red wine sauce made from beef stock Juice and zest of half a lemon ½ tablespoon of Dijon mustard 100ml double cream 1 glass of cooking brandy

For the rice: 500g basmati rice Water to cover (see recipe) 25g butter or a little olive oil Chopped fresh green herbs Pinch of salt

Method • Finely grate the lemon zest and prepare the onions and the garlic, clean and slice the mushrooms. Chop the parsley.

• Cut the trimmed beef fillet (ie no fat or sinew) into fingerwidth slices.

• Mix the smoked paprika, lemon zest, and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper together, and use to season the beef,coating it totally and leave the beef raw on the board ready to cook.

• In a large frying pan over a medium heat, fry the onion and garlic in a little oil until soft, remove and reserve on a plate. Now in the same pan turn up the heat and add the mushrooms, sauteing until they are golden brown, then add the butter and season and tip onto a plate with the onions.

• Clean the pan and add a little oil and heat the pan until very hot, fry the beef for two minutes, turning, until browned but still pink inside. Now remove from the pan and allow it to rest on a clean plate.

• In a saucepan reduce the red wine sauce/stock until thickish and while it is reducing whip the cream and add the lemon juice to the cream.

• Now add the mustard to the sauce and whisk in, taste and add the lemon cream mix, still reducing.

• Get a clean frying pan hot, and put in the beef and add the onions, mushrooms and the butter and now pour in the brandy and flame if you have gas. Finally add the hot reduced sauce to the pan and serve. Do not leave the beef too long in the pan in the sauce or it will overcook.

• Finish with the chopped parsley.

• Note: I deconstruct my stroganoff by serving the wild mushrooms separately as part of a design on the plate with various purees and reduced sauce, but the method above is far simpler!

How to cook perfect rice This is the best way!

Preheat your oven to 200C.

• Put the rice in a sieve and wash off the starch three or four times under cold running water.

• Put rice in a saucepan and cover with water so that the water is the thickness of one finger above the rice. Stir in a little salt.

• Heat the rice first on the stove for two to three minutes and now put a lid on the saucepan and cook in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

• Remove pan from oven carefully as it will be very hot. Stir in a little olive oil or butter and the chopped herbs and allow to rest with the lid on the saucepan for five minutes and serve.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

IN the firm belief that at least a half a dozen people have attempted to translate my little text last week, here is my version in English. I say ‘my version’ because translating is never quite as hard and fast as people think and there can often be alternative ways of expressing the same idea.

‘Hello. How are you? What have you done since last week? I have rested a little, at last! I went to the city of Almeria for two days, including New Year’s Eve. It is a small, quiet city but it has some (its) interesting things.

It has an enormous castle called La Alcazaba which dominates the city. It also has a subterranean refuge from the civil war which is unique in Spain. As I like history a lot I found it very interesting (it was very interesting for me).

My daughters have rested as well. One has been (went) with a group of friends to a village near Albacete. She says it is a very pretty area.

My other daughter has visited her friends in Asturias. She has travelled from Alicante

Translation and closed questions to Gijon by train and has seen (saw) a lot of snow along the way.

My cat has rested a lot as well. Now we are all at home again to start what the Spanish call ‘the uphill struggle of January’.

Time for a change of subject and I did promise a look at ‘closed’ and ‘open’ questions, so here it comes.

There are basically two different kinds of questions in a language, and in Spanish we have to deal with them in two different ways. A closed question is one that leads to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. For example, if I asked you: “Are you English?” or “Do you like cheese?” you could make several comments in reply, but the most immediate and obvious response is simply ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

This is in contrast with an ‘open’ question which requires us to give information, for example “Where are you from?” or

“What food do you like?” It is meaningless to answer these questions with a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’; to make sense we have to give some information as a response such as: ‘Ireland’ or ‘spaghetti bolognese’.

In Spanish these two kinds of questions are formed very differently. The easiest type to construct is the closed or ‘yes/no’ question. To do this all we have to do is make a statement sound like a question by the change of tone in our voice. For example: “Tienes hijos” means “You have children”.

To make this into a closed, question all we have to do is change our intonation, and when writing we place question marks on either side: “¿Tienes hijos?” “You have children?” or in correct English: “Do you have children?” The

initial answer to this is ‘yes’ or ‘no’, which we would say before we go on to give any more information.

For those of us who are native English speakers, it is worth sparing a thought here for the difficulty foreigners have when learning such constructions in English as we add extra words, and we change our word order.

First of all the word ‘do’ appears out of nowhere for no apparent reason – “Do you have any children?” not to mention the word ‘any’ – why is that there?

Even worse is that we can ask exactly the same question in a completely different way: “Have you got any children?” instead of “Do you have… ” What’s all that about? Basically when we start questions with Do, Can, Will, Would, Have, Does, Did, Has and so on in English, we are forming closed questions.

In Spanish, when we see something that looks like an ordinary sentence with the upside down question mark in front and, without a ‘question word’ such as ‘Dónde’ or ‘cuándo’ we are looking at a closed question.

A better night’s sleep THERE is nothing worse than lying in bed, feeling exhausted, but unable to sleep, tossing and turning for hours.

Limit stress: It can be easier said than done but try leaving your work or any big issues outside of the bedroom. Deal with the day’s problems in the daytime so you can forget them before you go to sleep.

Healthy lifestyle: Exercise and a healthy work-life balance is key to a restful night’s sleep but try and avoid exercise too close to bedtime as it can be stimulating.

Don’t eat late: The Spanish are famous for late-night meals and eating late is preferable during the long hot summer months, but be careful what you eat.

Big heavy meals do not aid the sleep pattern and can cause indigestion too close to bedtime.

Bedroom: Reserve the bedroom for sleeping and marital affairs and avoid watching TV or using electronic devices. This will help programme the brain into knowing the bed is for sleep. Keep the room cool and dark for comfort and a better night’s sleep.

THERE are a range of natural oils that might be worth trying if you are looking to avoid chemical products.

• Marula comes from the tree of the same name and is said to be good for dry skin as it is high in fatty acids.

• Tea tree is better known and many find it helps with soothing skin inflammations such as acne.

• Chamomile oil when used on skin can cut down on redness and irritation and is even said to reduce chances of infections.

• Coconut is good for conditions like eczema which are characterised by rough skin.

• Rosehip oil is high in vitamin A. This retinoid product is said to help replace old skin cells and reduce the effects of scarring and stretch marks.

• Rosemary oil is supposed to thicken your hair, as is castor oil.

• Most larders have olive oil which is supposed to harden brittle nails. Apply last thing at night to allow them to soak.

Doctors say swollen and aching fingers are being caused by texting and excessive use of electronic devices and is leading to cases of arthritis in younger people. Arthritis, inflammation and joint stiffness usually affects only older people.

While there are several causes for osteoarthritis, the degenerative form of the condition is often caused by general wear and tear.

The results found the ‘lowest effec-

tive dose,’ the smallest amount of exercise to make a difference to health, was the equivalent of 105 minutes a week which is below NHS guidelines in the UK of 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.

The scientists said a previous Harvard University study suggested people should undergo 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week, but another 15-year study found it made no difference.

Their study showed short bouts of sweat-inducing activity amounting to just 35 minutes a week were found to reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.

They said that whilst exercise was important and key to better health, people maybe did not need to do as much as they think to see benefits.

SPANISH car giants SEAT have announced plans to launch a brand new car every six months until 2020.

SEAT president, Luca de Meo, made the announcement at the company’s annual results presentation in Madrid while also telling media how the company had had it’s best year on record in 2017.

The first two vehicles to be released as part of the plan will be this year’s SEAT Tarraco and the CUPRA Ateca, both set to go on sale before the end of 2018, while next year the new generation SEAT Leon will be available in dealerships with two variants, the five-door model and the ST family sized version.
