by Tom Woods THE Prime Minister of the Spanish government, Mariano Rajoy, will be making a visit to Marbella to support Mayor Angeles Muñoz’s candidacy campaign.

He will be in attendance alongside Malaga’s PP President Elisa Bendodo, at an event held at Congress Palace this Saturday to appoint Andalucian PP candidates.

Mr Rajoy will then head on to a meeting of the Forum of Innovation and Tourism Promotion, having praised Marbella as a popular city that “fills us with pride.”

A FREE workshop in Los Boliches called ‘Take care of your pet’ will take place this month, aimed at young people.

Registration can be made at Fuengirola Council’s Youth Department and the initiative will be held on March 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25.

Participants will learn basic training for urban pets, and the course aims to establish a close relationship between owner and animal.

Commands to be taught include sitting, lying and returning, and a free veterinary assessment of every pet will also be provided.

Print museum’s outlook no longer sketchy JUST IN TIME: The fugitive threatening to jump.

Police save suicidal man on roof edge OFFICERS of the National Police have saved the life of a man who tried to throw himself from the roof of a building in Fuengirola.

The 31 year-old from Senegal was apprehended on Calle Camino de la Cantera, at midday on Tuesday.

He had failed to obey a restraining order against him involving a woman,

an d h ad f le d f ro m p o lice when he went to a prohibited area.

The man was in a heightened state of aggression and hysteria, threatening to throw himself off the building when the police approached.

In the circumstances the officers kept their distance and tried to calm him down for 20 minutes.

At one point the man sat on the edge of the roof and seemingly began to p ray, b e fo re d ro p p i n g off the edge and hang ing on with his hands.

The policemen then r u s h e d t o w a rd s h i m a n d managed to pull him to safety just in time.

T he man was taken for medical treatment before being arrested for breaching his restraining order.

M A R B E L L A’ S b e l o v e d s k e t c h a n d print museum has launched a new programme of activities after three years of troubles.

The Museum del Grabado in the O l d To w n h a s a r o u n d 4 , 0 0 0 e x hibits and is considered the best of its kind in Spain.

Having celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, the museum is kicking off its programme with a temporary exhibition of work by Axarquia artist Evaristo Guerra, until May 5.

H o w e v e r, t h e s i t u a t i o n h a s n o t always looked so bright as the museum’s foundation has struggled with debts that at one point led to an embargo on its accounts.

The building that was earmarked for the expansion of the museum,

and €1 million of central government funding, was made available in 2015.

But the council at the time did not develop the project, and criticised the Junta de Andalucia for stalling on archaeological studies.

As a result, the funding that had been allocated expired and heated political arguments ensued.

Nevertheless, the council and the museum’s foundation have now reached an agreement in which the building will be added to the former ’s historic buildings collection, in return for cancelling the debt owed by the foundation.

The Evisato Guerra exhibition includes 90 pieces from a 40-year c a r e e r, a n d t h e r e w i l l b e t h r e e more temporary displays in 2018.

OFFICERS of the National Police have arrested two members of a drugs ring in Marbella for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking and possession.

The suspects are a Swedish man and a Dutch woman, who operated within a fake leisure centre that was instead used to sell and distribute marihuana, hashish and hashish resin.

An investigation was opened after officers heard about the leisure centre which had aligned itself to a campaign to legalise marihuana.

After several inquiries the police launched a raid and the two suspects were RECREATIONAL CENTRE: The leisure club was only a front for a drugs network. arrested.

Woman injured in apartment block blaze A FIRE broke out in the Las Palmeras apartment blocks in Fuengirola on Monday morning, and a woman was injured trying to escape a building.

Firefighters from both Fuengirola and Mijas went to the scene, as well as officers from the Local and National Police, and health professionals.

The woman has been transferred to the Costa del Sol Hospital, while 50 other residents of the hotel had to be evacuated.

According to reports from the fire department, the blaze started in the meter compartment of the building and the smoke soon drove people out.

The woman who injured herself in the rush was on the first floor, but is believed to be recovering well in hospital.

Those who were evacuated were transferred to the hotel next door for treatment and meals.

The Las Palmeras apartments were without power and water but this was expected to be rectified within a few days.

THE recent storm meant that the sea engulfed nearly three metres of the sand dunes in Marbella, and significantly eroded the Las Chapas beach.

In fact this year’s storm is one of the strongest to have hit Marbella since records began.

The force of the gales and rain across the Costa del Sol left a trail of damage in their wake, and waves reached the

walls of some houses.

Produnas, a non-profit organisation with three decades of experience in protecting the Ecological Reser ve, laments that the region had not fully recovered from the storm of December 2016.

New ways of coping with similar incidents in future are being investigated, with different ideas being

proposed.

In 2016, the national government’s Environment Ministry approved its Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the coast, with the aim of mitigating the effects of global warming.

However, studies have not yet covered the Costa del Sol, and the eastern side in particular is growing in concern.

TWO British men have been arrested for abusive behaviour at Malaga’s airport.

The pair, aged 32 and 35, were drunk and spilling liquid on the floor while throwing airline check-in paperwork on the floor.

And police stepped in when they started to shout at fellow travellers in ‘an aggressive and threatening way.’

They refused to show their passports when approached by the officers, before one made a cut throat gesture with his finger while his other hand remained in his pocket.

When frisked a knife was found on him, while his friend was carrying a syringe.

They were eventually subdued when one pushed an officer in the chest, before being charged with assaulting a police officer.

BUDGET BACKTRACK: The council’s financial plans have not been smooth.

Budget woes cost council A FULL 75 days have elapsed since Manilva Council approved its budget for 2018, and it has now added a budget modification of €382,000.

Finance Councillor Marcos Ruiz pointed out that although this this is an “important” sum of money, it only represents 1.5 per cent of the budget, which amounts to €26.4 million.

Ruiz explained that the change is a response to new expenses that have arisen and that

€200,000 has been allocated to renovate the church of Santa Ana. It also provides for a new tourism campaign, renting of public transport vehicles, the purchase of containers and litter bins, the rental of parking lots and new towers on the beaches.

The budget modification will be largely taken from a resurfacing plan, as well as the acquisition of equipment for the municipal gym.

€4 million allocated for town makeover BENALMADENA Council will be putting out to tender four construction works with a total value of €4 million.

Mayor Victor Navas said: “The fact that we can undertake these extensive works is the result of sound economic management.

We have reduced the debt we inherited, paid suppliers on time, drafted the projects and started the bidding process.”

Mother of missing man pleads for assistance THE family of the missing man in Torremolinos, Antonio Ortega , has appealed for the search to continue.

Batten down the hatches STRONG winds are forecast to batter the Costa del Sol this weekend.

State weather office AEMET has revealed that orange weather alerts - the second highest level - will be in place for the coast throughout the day tomorrow (Saturday).

And a yellow alert will be applied to the remainder of Malaga Province.

The buffeting is expected to be accompanied by rain, and is set to reach its peak between 8pm and midnight, with force 8 gusts reaching 75 kilometres per hour.

Woof justice for dogs MARBELL A Council is under f i re fo r i nv i t i n g b i d d e r s fo r a contract to ‘deal with’ abandoned animals.

According to opposition group Izquierda Unida , a similar privatisation scheme in Malaga City sees 80 per cent of rescued animals slaughtered if new owners for them are not found.

And in Marbella the contract repor tedly gives the winning company permission to kill after a period of 10 days.

IU official Victoria Moraless said: “By making this decision t h e Po p u l a r Pa r t y h a v e c o n demned most of the abandoned animals in Marbella to death. “ The life of these animals has been left in the hands of a private firm that is only interested in money.”

According to critics, the move has taken the city back three decades “ when the council last carried out this practice.”

Ms Morales added: “ T here is no specific mention of how a Marbella owner mig ht recover their lost pet should it be found in the proposed contract.”

2,500 bottles of fake booze seized THE Guardia Civil has dismantled a criminal network in a raid that saw it seize more than 2,500 counterfeit bottles of vintage rum in Marbella.

An investigation began in March 2017 when officers conducted several inspections in retailers where they found a range of drinks that did not meet labelling standards.

A businessman in Sevilla had been introducing fake drinks into the city, at prices much lower

than the real brands.

Since the illicit bottles looked almost identical to the genuine ones, it was necessary to carry out laborator y tests on the alcohol to confirm the fraud.

The ‘Precintado operation’ was carried out by Estepona’s Guardia Civil in tandem with Sevilla investigation teams and the judicial police of Cordoba.

Justice for courts with new building

Housing sales through the roof in province MARBELL A has again shown its strength in housing sales, accounting for 13 per cent of the total transactions in the whole of Malaga Province.

The region as a whole has enjoyed an upward trend according to data published by the Ministry of Development.

In the final four months of 2017, the province’s sales were up by over 15 per cent on the previous year.

However, the supply of new buildings remains scarce and of the total of 4,285 transactions involving Marbella, 4,043 were second-hand, and only 242 were brand new.

THE Junta de Andalucia and Marbella Council have reached an agreement with the Justice Department to provide a building that will house the court and judicial offices of the city.

The building is located next to the Costa del Sol Hospital and is one of the assets seized from the disgraced former Urban Development Manager Juan Antonio Roca.

Remodelling works will take place to adapt the property for the purposes of its judicial needs.

“It is a moment of enormous satisfaction for the council, because it is an essential outcome for Marbella which can finally have the judicial facilities it needs,” said Junta representative Rosa Aguilar.

TOURIST TRAP: Evidence suggests the woman was drugged before the rape.

by Tom Woods THE National Police are investigating an alleged rape of a Swedish woman in Fuengirola, who may have been spiked with drugs.

According to the victim, she lost consciousness and on recovering realised that she was being sexually assaulted.

The woman was transferred to the Costa del Sol Hospital where protocols were activated for cases that show signs of chemical interference.

Investigations are now b e i n g l e d b y t h e Fa m i l y a n d Wo m e n ’s C a re U n i t (UFAM), who are looking into the victim’s account of waking up completely n a k e d i n a s t ra n g e r ’s

apartment.

The woman, a Swedish tourist, had gone out with friends for dinner, and afterwards decided to have a final drink in a bar on her own.

From then on, everything for her is a blur and she remembers nothing of how she ended up in a stranger’s flat when she was supposed to be staying in a hotel.

El Dia del Padre NEXT Monday is Father’s Day in Spain and some regions will be celebrating with local holidays.

€10,000 EU grant awarded to transform council bookings ESTAPONA Council is to put out to tender an online system where residents can book appointments from their mobile phones, tablets or computers.

The new service has been included in the Strategic Plan for Technological Modernisation, which will provide the opportunity to request an online appointment for administrative procedures like tax management, and registrations.

In addition, it will improve communication lines between locals and the different departments of the council.

The changes mean that residents will not need to head in person to the waiting rooms of the municipal Citizen’s Service Office, and they will know

FUENGIROLA Council’s commitment to the defence and promotion of children’s rights has been shown once more in its involvement in the Child Friendly Cities programme.

The town was honoured several years ago by UNICEF for its work in this area, and now it is looking to promote the Convention of Child Rights at a local level.

As par t of the Child Friendly Cities initiative, Fuengirola will network with

other towns and cities in the project to develop strategies for the welfare of children.

This includes defending their rights, making urban areas as accessible as possible, and encouraging them to participate in local activities and games.

Last week a working commission was held to discuss the issue, and councillors from education, youth, beaches, culture, parks and gardens, and sports were all present to share their ideas.

Council homing in on housing estates PLANS to include 200 independent housing estates and residential blocks in the street services provided

by Mijas Council are gaining ground.

The council has finished its audit of the condition of each district, and is now preparing for the implementation of road maintenance and street cleaning.

It is a move that will reduce costs for residents although the services will only be provided if the estates are

in a good enough state, and if all the paperwork is in order.

The audit will allow public officials to calculate how much it will cost to run each estate, and the extent of work needed for those in a failing condition.

In order to meet the cost sustainably, the council intends to spread it out over several years, but has already moved ahead with the asphalting of some roads.

Teachers tackle battle of sexes MIJAS has launched the initiative ‘Vamos a medias’ (Let’s go halfway) to promote equality in school classrooms.

Councillor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona, has announced a set of progressive workshops which will be taught to almost 900 students in the town.

“We have developed awareness workshops on reconciliation and co-responsibility

as we have to start building a society free from stereotypes and roles,” said Ms Carmona.

“We must ensure an egalitarian future, and that is achieved above all, through education.”

The training is aimed at fifth grade students in every school in Mijas, covering 36 classrooms and 900 pupils.

It is part of efforts to normalise the idea of shared responsibility in domestic tasks, caring for others, and making decisions based on the well-being of the family.

“We have to fight it from the beginning,” added Ms Carmona.”

The workshops are designed to be dynamic, active and collaborative, where students are encouraged to reflect on their family and school environments, and where they are given the tools to challenge sexist stereotypes.

Themes include: the learning of roles at home and at school; gender stereotypes and tasks assigned by sex in society.

The purpose was to discuss updates on the poisoning of Sergei Skripal.

The British spy was sentenced by a Russian court to 13 years for espionage. Based in Spain he passed the Russian Military Intelligence phonebook to MI6 and much else.

Needless to say there wasn’t a shred of evidence to suggest Russian involvement. But, media dutifully presented speculation as 100 per cent proven facts and it was ignored that the victim was found only a few miles from the MOD exotic weaponry laboratories at Porton Down.

Slipstream media had the scoundrels bang to rights; everything printed or broadcast about this story was 100 per cent fake.

The Sun headlined screeched, ‘Our lads beating Vlad’. This was reference to DS Nick Bailey, a

thing. The comment was made by a solitary TV presenter speaking on one of Russia’s hundreds of broadcasting channels. The anchorman’s inference did not imply Russian responsibility.

It is claimed that western media is independent. How odd that throughout this affair orchestrat-

ed media sung to the same song sheet.

Cui bono or who benefits: A false flag, anyone? The headlines followed: ‘Theresa May could send more troops and jets to Russia’s border’. The blood-soaked arms industry and its vampire political shareholders can now throw the funeral wake of the century.

Good timing too; the convenient incident occurred three weeks before the Russian presidential election. Boris Johnson, UK Foreign Secretary, raised the prospect of some form of boycott of this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Tom Secker, an analyst on espionage, says state apparatus has the means to assassinate in ways that are untraceable. This suggests a prepared hullaballoo with opportunity to damage Russia at a critical period without Russia benefiting from the incident.

Secker adds that there were many victims of the British agent who had a motive for his attempted murder. Skripal betrayed many people, not just in terms of agents but criminal organisations too.

The analyst reminds us that Israeli Mossad agents assassinated a Hamas politician whilst travelling on British passports. The British government speedily dropped the matter, which suggests complicity and culpability.

WE live in a ‘pass the buck’ society.

Whenever a politician fouls up, which let’s face it is hardly a rare occurrence, it’s never their fault and is blamed on a predecessor or some unfortunate underling who is forced to fall on his sword.

And of course that familiar old chestnut: offload the blame on the previous administration, is always a good standby.

If a human error occurs in a hospital because of overwork and exhaustion, then it is inevitable that a doctor or nurse must be shot at dawn, and if someone is stupid enough to take a sip of hot coffee in a restaurant resulting in a burnt mouth, then of course the restaurant is negligent and damages are demanded.

Whether we walk into a tree in the park because it is not looking where it is going, twist an ankle whilst legging it from the house we have just burgled, or are sacked by the boss for peeing in the coffee machine, then look out, it’s not our fault and someone has to pay, and usually

and unaccountability.

Time and again we hear from the present generation that it is us old ‘uns who are the architects of today’s problems, and that all of the ills of the 21st century - both real and imagined - are directly attributable to our actions and those of our predecessors.

We stand accused for the failings of modern society.

But they should get their noses stuck into the history books occasionally instead of playing games on their expensive smartphones and then ask themselves this: When was Britain at its strongest and when in its history was it the most respected country in the world with many of its institutions like justice, education and democracy adopted by others and still practised successfully across the world today?

In fact, if the experience, sagacity and wisdom of the elderly were utilised today, then the morally corrupt and inept figures in politics and society generally, who think they know it all but possess not an ounce of common sense or real courage between them, might learn something.

AS it was such a spring-like day on February 24, I ventured out late in the afternoon wearing a light jacket over a tshirt.

Half an hour later, after the sun had set, the temperature dramatically plummeted and I stood shivering at a bus shelter, wondering whether I should return home to get warmer gear, or continue my planned journey to La Marina shopping centre on the outskirts of Benidorm.

Mercifully, just before hypothermia set in, a bus came along, and it dawned on me that a sure-fire way of staying warm for the rest of the evening was to head for the nearest Chinese outlet and buy a chunky hoodie.

Why a ‘Chino’? Everyone who lives in Spain knows that whatever one needs from dog poo bags to paella pans, carpets to cup hooks, watch batteries to water jugs - are to be found on the shelves of ubiquitous Chinese stores.

They are everywhere.

And because the Chinese proprietors would sooner stick their heads up a d e a d b e a r ’s b u t t t h a n s h u t t e r t h e i r shops during siestas, you can get anything you need at silly prices at any

Which explains why the Spanish have a saying to describe labouring oneself to a standstill: trabajando como un Chino (working like a Chinese.)

Unfortunately the only hoodie I could find in my size on a sale rail was beyond hideous. Black with white and green speckles, it looked as if it had been hauled out of the rubble of a paint factory that had gone boom after being hit by a dynamite lorry.

What the heck, I thought, it’ll be invisib l e b e n e a t h m y j a c k e t , a n d i t ’s o n l y €14. It was only when I reached the checkout did I realise its ghastliness was doubly compounded by the fact that it came with a pair of matching jogging pants. When I got home and tried on the ensemble, I looked like a mutant frog with an unsightly rash.

The incident set me wondering why so many Chinese shops - ranging from gloomy little corner outlets to vast em-

poria - exist in such huge numbers in Spain. The answer was easy to find.

Others before asked themselves the very same question, and, reading various blogs and Wikipedia, I discovered that the first large wave of Chinese immigrants came to Spain in the 1920’s and 1930’s, working as itinerant peddlers. After the Second World War, they branched out into the restaurant industry, and later into textiles and trade.

However, the vast majority of Chinese residents in Spain started arriving in the country around the 1980’s. According to Xu Songhua, President of the Association of Chinese in Spain (Asociación de Chinos en España), established in 1985, there are around 13,000 Chineseowned businesses in Spain, including 4,000 restaurants, 3,200 ‘euro shops’, 1,500 fruit and veg outlets, and 600 wholesale warehouses.

Nowadays, Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands are home to Spain’s largest Chinese communities.

One blogger revealed that a third of the 200,000 or so Chinese in Spain are officially sole traders. Their businesses are family-run and their motivation for working as hard as they do is tied in with family pride.

Present perfect negatives and questions

THIS is the last of the articles about the ‘recent past’ or present perfect tense before we move on to pastures new. Here is a text written a while ago (and at a different time of year!) which exemplifies the use of the tense along with a few other bits and pieces. ¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? ¿Qué habéis hecho desde la semana pasada?

Yo he descansado un poco, ¡por fin! Fui a la ciudad de Almería durante dos días, incluyendo Nochevieja. Es una ciudad pequeña y tranquila pero tiene sus cosas interesantes. Tiene un castillo enorme que se llama La Alcazaba y que domina la ciudad. También tiene un refugio subterráneo de la guerra civil que es único en España por su extensión. Como me gusta mucho la historia, era muy interesante para mí.

Mi gata ha descansado mucho también.

Ahora estamos todos en casa otra vez para empezar lo que los españoles llaman ‘a cuesta de enero’ Apart from the abundant use of the recent past tense there are a few other things to comment on. Firstly the final expression: ‘la cuesta de enero’. This means something like ‘the uphill struggle of January’. ‘Cuesta’ normally means a slope, but ‘la cuesta de enero’ is a particular kind of difficult upward slope

which those of you who work will identify with and those who have retired can perhaps vaguely remember. As well as the psychologist effects of returning to work in the middle of winter, it also refers to the economic problems left by overspending over the Christmas period. My cat finds January particularly arduous with people coming in and out of the house at all different times of day.

Finally, I would like to link back to things we looked at some time ago, namely for the for-

mation of negatives and questions. We saw that to form negative sentences all we need to do is place the word ‘no’ before the verb. The same principle applies to all verb tenses, including this one. For example: ‘No he hecho los deberes’. (I haven’t done my homework) When we name the subject, the word ‘no’ stays in front of the verb. ‘Mi hermano no ha vendido su casa’ (My brother hasn’t sold his house).

Similarly when we are forming closed questions, that is questions that require ‘yes’ or ‘no’ as an answer, we simply make statements sound like questions with our voice, without any change in word order. ‘Tu hermano ha vendido su casa’ (Your brother has sold his house) ‘¿Tu hermano ha vendido su casa?’ (Has your brother sold his house?).

Una ha ido con un grupo de amigos a un pueblo cerca de Albacete. Dice que es una zona muy bonita. Mi otra hija ha visitado a sus amigas en Asturias. Ha viajado desde Alicante a Gijón en tren y ha visto mucha nieve a lo largo del camino.

Digging these good vibrations R E C E N T LY t h e G o o d V i b r a t i o n s Singing Sessions performed a concert in aid of Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva at the Huber Plataforma de Arte in Calle San Antonio, Estepona.

T h e c h o i r, u n d e r t h e d i r e c t i o n o f Clarice Williams, is newly formed and this was their first public appearance.

They were excellent and all who attended were impressed by the standard they had reached in a short space of time.

Thanks are due to Gabriella for the use of the venue. The choir is a m i x e d a b i l i t y, m u l t i - c u l t u r a l , m u l t i genre singing group, which meets in Estepona. The emphasis is on learning to sing in a variety of styles and harmonies in a fun environment, expressing one’s self through song and connecting to a lyric, hence the programme had something for everyone.

Songs from the shows, and top hits were two of the styles on offer and it ended with an ABBA sing-along for all present to join in.

Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva, are delighted to be linked to the choir in helping older people in the community and are grateful for the support shown.

More elderly people are requesting advice and help than ever and the money raised through ticket sales and the raffle will go to support the volunteers working in the field.

Age Concern shop open for business The Age Concern shop is in Calle Zaragoza, Estepona and is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 1.30pm plus the first Saturday in the month. The road works in Estepona are ongoing in Calle Zaragoza but access to the shop has been maintained. If you want donations collected please call 951 318 234 and speak to the Duty Manager.

Treading the boards THESPA will hold their monthly meeting at the Masonic Hall, Los Boliches on Wednesday March 28 at 7.30pm.

This month they are presenting Effie’s Burning by Valerie Windsor starring Shirley Knauf and Julie Payne, directed by Geoffrey Stansfield.

The play takes place in a hospital in the present. Effie seems a simple soul but Dr Kovac is shocked by her story. Was she injured in an accident? How will the revelations affect the doctor’s future?

Tribute to Roy Alan THE Sailing Club in Benalmadena held a special concert in tribute to Roy Alan with performances by the Costa Soul Singers and A Touch of Class Choirs.

Two of the best choirs on the coast livened up and gave good cheer to the public on a cold winter’s evening in Puerto Marina in Benalmadena and the organiser, Debbie Geater, gave a heartfelt speech in tribute to Roy Alan.

Also a charity raffle took place with some wonderful prizes.

This special concert has raised €1,025 in aid of Cudeca Hospice.

Food fit for 007

www.thelittlegeranium.com SAINT PATRICK was a fifth century British Christian bishop in southern Ireland.

Known as the ‘Apostle of Ireland’, he was the primary patron Saint of Ireland.

The dates of Saint Patrick’s life cannot be fixed with certainty, but there is broad agreement that he was active as a missionary in Ireland during the second half of the fifth cen-

tury. Early medieval tradition credits him with being the first bishop of Armagh and they regard him as the founder of Christianity in Ireland.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, the supposed date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday. It is like a celebration of Ireland itself.

We have a lot of Irish clients, we love them as they are generally foodies, they love my creative cuisine and they love to drink! We have a lot of stock so they are always welcome!

So this week in preparation for the special celebration we will be dressing the restaurant with a little green, which has become associated with Catholics in Ireland, and we will also have some classic Irish dishes on the menu.

So what do you eat on Saint Patrick’s Day? Irish stew, corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, champ potatoes and colcannon.

I recall cooking for Pierce Brosnan at The Pink Geranium around 1991. His hometown

was Navan in Ireland although he has lived in the US for many years. He was with his adorable wife Cassandra and she announced to me that night that he was going to be the next James Bond 007, “but don’t say a word” she said!

I always felt privileged that I knew about him becoming James Bond years before it actually happened. He didn’t get the role of 007 until 1994. His wife (who sadly died a short time later) told me that he was destined for 007 and it was her dying ambition. It hadn’t occurred to me then that she was being quite literal.

So what does 007 like to eat? Well with Saint Patrick’s Day looming Pierce said …. “any chance of colcannon?” “Yep sure!” I said having no clue what colcannon actually was. I went into the kitchen and I called a friend who is a well-known Irish chef, Richard Corrigan. I couldn’t get hold of him but I spoke to one of his chefs who knew the dish and explained it to me.

A little embarrassing but as an English chef

Traditional Irish colcannon COLCANNON is unique and has become popular on many chefs’ menus worldwide.

The word colcannon is from the Gaelic ‘cal ceannann,’ which literally means ‘white-headed cabbage’.

In the past, charms were mixed in with the colcannon.

Depending on what charm you found it was seen as a prediction for the future. A button meant you would remain a bachelor and a thimble meant you would remain a spinster for the coming year. A ring meant you would get married and a coin meant you would come into wealth.

Others filled their socks with colcannon and hung them from the handle of the front door in the belief that the first man through the door would be their future husband!

Colcannon Ingredients serves approx 4

Approx 2kg potatoes (or about 8 large potatoes) 1 head of green cabbage or kale 250ml cream 150g unsalted butter, cut into cubes 4-5 scallions (spring onions) chopped (optional) Salt and pepper Fresh parsley to finish

Method

Peel potatoes and boil in seasoned water with a little olive oil.

While the potatoes are cooking, remove the core from the cabbage, and slice the leaves thinly. Put a pan of boiling water on and keep at a slow-rolling boil ready to cook the cabbage.

When the potatoes are soft and a knife can ride through

them, drain the water and return the potatoes to the saucepan.

Leave them on a low heat with the lid off so that any excess moisture can evaporate and they can dry out.

When they are perfectly dry, add the cream to the saucepan, along with a third of the butter and the chopped scallions. It is ready when the butter has melted.

Now drop the cabbage into the boiling water and cook for about one minute, keeping it nice and green and a little al dente.

When the cabbage is cooked, drain it well, squeeze to get any excess moisture out, then return to the saucepan. Add one-third of the butter to the cabbage. Leave it covered in a warm place, but not on a burner, with the butter melting gently into it.

With a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes thoroughly into the butter/cream mix.

Now mix the buttered cabbage thoroughly through the mashed potato, along with the spring onions (optional) Before serving, season with a little salt and white pepper and sprinkle with lots of fresh chopped parsley. Irish crispy garlic potatoes

A favourite on The Little Geranium menus, these crispy little potatoes are finished in a pan with loads of garlic and butter.

I had not come across it before and in 1991 we had no Google!! So I prepared some colcannon and served it up with his beef fillet and then went out to see him. He was holding his wife’s hand. He looked up and said …

“Hey that colcannon was the best I’ve had.”

“My pleasure” I said acting as though I had cooked it many times before!

A few years later I was at an event in London and George Best was there. He was Northern Irish but the Catholics celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in Northern Ireland as well. I was with some other well-known chefs and we were all in awe of George.

He came over to our table and said, “hey chef… I like to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World.” We laughed out loud and I raised a glass to him.

Later we met at the bar and he said … “You know in 1969 I gave up women and alcohol. It was the worst 20 minutes of my life!” With happy memories like this it’s hardly surprising that I love the Irish!

Here is my colcannon recipe but it’s also worth noting that you can make a colcannon soup using the same ingredients. I have included one other favourite Irish potato dish that is also great. Enjoy St Patrick’s Day! Colcannon good enough for 007!

Ingredients for 4 8 potatoes (choose ones that are good for chipping) peeled and cut into 2cm cubes 4 cloves garlic peeled and sliced thinly per person 2 cloves garlic chopped and crushed per person Maldon salt White pepper Chopped parsley 125g soft butter Olive oil

Method

Very simply blanch the potatoes in a low fryer approx 120/140c until tender for approx five minutes.

Remove and allow them to rest. They should be tender and pale looking, check with a knife and if not tender put them back for a few mins.

Heat the fryer to about 190C. When at temperature put the potatoes in the fryer and cook until golden brown and crisp.

Meanwhile heat a non-stick frying pan on the stove and pour in two tablespoons of oil and add the sliced garlic (not the crushed) cook gently so that the garlic doesn’t colour.

Remove the crisp potatoes from the fryer and drop them into your frying pan and toss and stir well Now add the soft butter and allow it to bubble and cover the potatoes, at this point add the crushed garlic and cook for 30 seconds. (The reason we don’t add the crushed garlic earlier is because it will burn if too hot) Season well and drain onto tissue paper. Toss over loads of chopped parley and Maldon salt and serve in little bowls. in the centre of the table. Yum!

WHEN I was 13 years of age, a Glasgow musician started to arrive in sound on a simple transistor radio I owned.

His name was Lonnie Donegan and he had finally broken the back of music in Britain that was accepted as the norm. The music was called skiffle.

Skiffle was adapted from country blues groups in the pre-war American south with improvised instruments.

I was just 13 but knew I had to get into this music so made myself a tea chest bass.

Tea chests in the 50’s and 60’s were the most common way of transporting materials by sea or land and were lined inside with silver foil which was ripped out and given to various charities.

I got hold of a tea chest, painted it red, bought myself a sink plunger and replaced the small handle with a broom stale. Then I drilled a small hole at the top of the broom stale and inserted a

length of heavy cord, tied a knot then drilled in the corner of the tea chest another hole, inserted the other end of the cord and secured it.

Got myself a tea chest bass...

Yippee.

My mate at the time owned a washboard, which his Mum used for washing clothes in the dolly tub. The washboard which was another tool that was used for washing at the end of the 20th century was made of galvanised steel in a wooden frame, but in the early 21st century manufacturers made them of ribbed glass with a rust resistant frame in brass.

Anther instrument was born to skiffle. Players of the washboard, with the aid of a thimble, used to skiffle up and down the board to make a percussion sound.

With the help of an acoustic guitar player who could play three chords we performed at church halls and community centres.

I was just a young lad who wanted to pursue my future in music, the tea chest bass never matched the root note of the chords of the guitarist, but for some reason the audience loved it!

I then formed my own folk group but that’s another story.

Our minds are surprisingly busy when we sleep. Memories can be strengthened, and learnt skills cemented in place, a process called consolidation.

Stem cell hope for premature ageing SCIENTISTS say they have successfully grown functioning pituitary cells in the lab from stem cells, which could treat premature ageing disease.

They said when the cells were transplanted to rats with a damaged pituitary gland, they restored hormone levels and helped to treat the rare

premature ageing condition known as hypopituitarism.

They hope these results will pave the way for treating the human form of the disease.

The pituitary gland helps keep us on an even keel and regulates growth and metabolism, producing hormones

which control other glands in the body.

People with hypopituitarism have problems with this ‘master gland’ which means their brains are unable to produce or release enough of certain key hormones, and this can lead to dwarfism in children and premature ageing in adults.

RUNNING may not be as good for your health as you think. Research by the College of Podiatry found that running typically leaves people nursing injuries for around 26 days each year.

Their study found that ignoring foot or leg pain meant 13 per cent were forced to give up sport or running completely because it got worse, and half of people who take up a new sport or running get injured by wearing the wrong footwear.

Two-thirds of those asked admitted they do not replace trainers or running shoes until they fall apart, and 43 per cent confessed they’ve carried on using uncomfortable footwear, because they look good, despite the pain.

Wearing the wrong shoes for running can lead to injuries such as shin splints, calf problems, lower back pain and hamstring strains. One in four had to get hospital treatment for their injury which

The average Brit has two pairs of trainers, but only 19 per cent had a proper fitting before buying and 33 per cent never tried them on having bought them online.

The College of Podiatry recommends shoes are professionally fitted, should be at least 1cm longer than the longest toe and should be fitted in the afternoon or evening when feet are at their longest.

Experts say that 15 minutes of daily exercise is enough for older adults to see big benefits to their health, with this activity being linked to a 22 per cent lower risk of an early death.

Researchers carried out a study on two groups of people to see if lower levels of exercise could be as beneficial as the recommended 150 minutes each week.

One group of 1,011 French people aged 65 in 2001, were followed over a period of 12 years while the second, an international group, of 122,417 people aged 60, was followed over 10 years.

Participants’ activity was measured in Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) minutes each week, assessing the amount of calories used per minute of physical activity.

The recommended levels of exercise equate to between 500 and 1,000 MET minutes every week.

Facial colouration seems to be the most important in determining how healthy someone looks.

Research has identified that faces with lighter, redder, or yellower skin were seen as the healthiest and there are some biological processes associated with these colours.

Lighter skin is associated with the ability to absorb more vitamin D. Greater redness may indicate more efficient circulation and blood supply to the skin, and people with yellower skin tend to have healthier diets, rich in fruit and vegetables.

Tanning also increases skin yellowness and makes faces appear healthier, but the yellowness brought about from a healthy diet is obviously preferred to tanning.

What makes us able to see colours?

Our ability to see colours depends on the lightsensitive cells in the retina, called rods and cones.

The rods are arranged around the edge of the retina and are sensitive to dim light. The cones are sensitive to bright light and, importantly, colour.

They are positioned right in the centre of the retina. That’s why when you want to see what colour something is, you look directly at it. It’s much more difficult to tell what colour something is if you can only just see it out of the corner of your eye.

Why are some people colour blind?

Some people’s cones don’t work properly, which means that they can’t see colour at all. Fortunately, it’s quite rare. Much more common is a form of colour-blindness where reds and greens get mixed up. About seven men in every 100 and four women in every 10,000 have this kind of colour-blindness.

How can I tell if my child is colour blind?

We use something called the Ishihara test to identify colour blindness in children. The optician will show them a number of plates which are printed with dots of different colours, brightness, density and sizes, arranged so that the dots of similar colour form a figure (eg a number) among a background of differently-coloured dots. This will give you a clear diagnosis.

A young man who is a devil of a driver EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

by John Smith THERE is a young man who was born in Villajoyosa in 2007 who is making a name for himself as a go-karting champion.

Cruz Wilkes, whose parents moved to Spain from the UK in 2006, lives and works in the area with his father Kevin, a carpenter and his mother Suzanne, a teacher at the bilingual school Newton College in Elche.

Cruz attends the same school and is fluent in three languages, English, Spanish and the regional dialect Valenciano.

Since the age of five, the young man has been in a gokart and he trains four times a week and was so excited when he entered a competition for drivers under

seven and came in second.

Since then he has been entering numerous competitions where he showed real talent, gaining numerous podium finishes in his category.

In 2015 Cruz participated in his first full championship, the Valencian Championship, as the youngest competitor in his category, ending the season in third place.

In 2106 Cruz participated in the Rotax Championship where he had to learn all about a completely different engine which he had never driven before, but still managed to finish in the top 10.

Last year ’s season ended with Cruz securing second in the regional championship and his parents are proud of his achievements, especially as he has been up against drivers of big teams with the best equipment, mechanics and engines. He and his father are a team on a budget which makes it clear that his success is thanks to his driving ability.

championship in Spain in 1998/99, so when Cruz was very small he would go into the garage and sit in his dad’s go-kart and say when he was big he wanted one.

When Cruz first got behind the wheel of his go-kart, he showed no fear; he would drive behind the bigger more experienced drivers to learn the skill. He has had a couple of big accidents and he just gets up, brushes himself off and gets back into it.

Thanks to his fearless racing style he has been nicknamed ‘El Diablo’ and sometimes he chooses to race with the ‘Number of the Beast’ 666.

When he isn’t feeling devilish, he chooses number 44 which is his hero Lewis Hamilton’s number and it is no coincidence that Hamilton started racing go-karts at a similar age and look

Although he is a young man who still has to complete his education, Cruz is very focused and in an exclusive Spanish interview with RTN newspaper he explained his aims and aspirations, but these are coloured by a realism about how much time, dedication and cash will be involved.

“I am reading Lewis Hamilton’s story now, he was just like me growing up, his dad had to work very, very hard to provide him with what he did, just like my mum and dad, but Lewis Hamilton made it to Formula One so one day I want to be just like him, “This is why I use the number 44. I also use 666 because I’m known on the track as ‘el Diablo’ which in Spanish means ‘the devil’ because everyone says I’m a little devil on the track.

“My other racing heroes are Max Verstappen, because he was the youngest Formula One driver and Daniel Riccardo, because he is always happy with whatever result he has.”

Cruz continued “I can’t wait for the weekend to come, when I can be at the race circuit. I love everything about racing, I love to learn about

the mechanics of the kart and not just the racing, I like helping my dad do things to the kart.

“I enjoy being out on the track racing other drivers and just love to go fast and win!”

He has his future mapped out saying “First I want to finish in go-karting when I am old enough, then I want go to the Formula 3, GP3, GP2 and then hopefully to F1.”

In the meantime however this demon driver has his eyes firmly set on the Spanish Championship and believes that this could be his year.

Sponsorship is important as to run a kart is costly, and although as a family hobby it is manageable, with the talent and skill shown by Cruz it is a natural progression for him to compete further and develop as a racing driver.

The maintenance of the kart, tyres, the engine, training, travel costs and general consumables become a recurrent cost as he starts to compete more, so sponsorship enables Cruz to continue to participate in karting and continue to follow his dream.

Rally Comunidad Valencia 2018 THE 2018 Valencian Rally season kicks off in April with Rally Jalon 2018, which is the opening round of the Tarmac Championship of the Comunidad of Valencia.

Car Broker Spain, along with CBS Motorsport EspaĂąa, has announced that rally co-driver Amanda Stephenson will be competing in at least six rounds of the Valencia Tarmac Championship and co-driving alongside Belgian rally expert Yves Cools in his mark I Ford Escort, and rally newcomer Andy Stephenson in his Subaru WRX. Starting with Rally Jalon (Jalon Valley) preparations are underway for making pace notes, the directions which the co-driver calls out to the driver well in advance, to help him to navigate at top speed.

Following Rally Jalon, Amanda will co-drive for Yves Cools in Rally Costa Azahar in May, Rally Ceramica in June and Rally Valencia in December. Amanda will also co-drive alongside Andy in Rally Xixona in September and Rally La Nucia in November.

Rallying in Spain is a well-supported sport with many females participating, and Amanda and Andy have met many world-renowned rally drivers such as Hayden Paddon, Dani Sordo, Mads Ă˜stberg, and even legends such as Tomi Makkinen and Ari Vatanen.
