Since the Middle Ages he has been associated with a tradition of love and marriage, but most likely the association of love is mostly fictional.

So at The Little Geranium in La Cala we are celebrating a week of love (running from next Tuesday to February 17﴿ and this year I

Sleeping problems could be serious NOT getting enough sleep? Join the club as nearly half of all women are sleep deprived and constantly tired.

It can be a side effect of getting older, as sleep is a problem as women approach the menopause, but it could also be a sign of a more serious underlying medical condition, sleep apnoea.

A disturbed night is often caused by the disorder sleep apnoea,

which causes snoring and dangerous pauses in breathing. The chances of getting the disorder can be increased during pregnancy, and the menopause increases a woman’s risk of suffering from the disorder.

It is thought around 1.5 million adults in Britain suffer with sleep apnoea, yet many do not talk to a doctor about the problem, and if left untreated it can lead to a

stroke or heart attacks.

As well as snoring and insomnia, symptoms include restless legs, fatigue, depression, headaches and muscle pain.

A survey of 4,100 British adults found that 46 per cent of women have trouble sleeping, compared with 36 per cent of men, with women also more likely to wake during the night. Six in 10 women said they become irritable during the day because of lack of sleep.

The state-of-the-art technology helps to identify changes that might be associated with certain eye conditions such as diabetic changes, hypertensive retinopathy, macular degeneration, optic nerve disease and retinal holes or thinning. The ability to save images creates a lasting record for ongoing monitoring. If necessary the optician can refer patients directly for further medical examination to their hospital or general practitioner.

Can it really identify health problems too?

In addition to helping opticians identify sight-related problems, digital retinal photography can also highlight the signs of a range of other conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, risk of a stroke and symptoms associated with brain tumours.

This allows patients to seek medical help before symptoms become noticeable in many cases.

LAST Monday optical group Specsavers announced that they have raised € 6,107.30 for the charity Fundacion ONCE para la Atencion de Personas con Sordoceguera (FOAPS﴿ between July and December 2017.

Jose Angel Moral-Tajadura, Retail and Business Development Manager for Specsavers Spain, presented a cheque to Marcelo Rosado, ONCE representative for Andalucia, Ceuta and Melilla and Jose Miguel Luque Gomez, Director of ONCE for the areas of Malaga, Cordoba and Melilla at the ONCE offices in Malaga.

This will fund 407 hours of interpreting for deaf and blind people in Spain in 2018. As well as funds, the campaign raised awareness of

the issues that the deaf-blind face and the excellent work that FOAPS does. Specsavers are delighted to have been able to support the charity in this way.

FOAPS is a charitable organisation, formed in 2007 by leading Spanish charity ONCE, to develop programmes to help deaf-blind people. They are particularly interested in helping with education and employment, improving the quality of life and encouraging integration and development.

FOAPS provide interpreters, who can help the deaf-blind communicate and interact with the world.

FOAPS Director Esther Requena Olea expressed her gratitude by saying “We would like to say thank you for the € 6,107 donated by
