Reporting The News

Global gathering by Jimmy Grayling COUNCIL representatives from 30 countries united in Mijas to discuss the issues that most affect expatriates living on the coast. The Costa del Sol expatriate community is made up of more than 125 different nationalities, although most of the councillors who attended the meeting came from other European countries. Juan Carlos Maldonado, the Mayor of Mijas, led the meeting of local representatives held in a restaurant in La Cala. On the table for discussion were topics such as security issues, the fight against gender violence and

the change in local tax policy. The councillor of foreigners, Roy Perez, who was also in attendance, said “Local councils can act as bridges that connect expatriates to both their new home and their countries of origin”. “In this meeting we were able to discuss the concerns of our residents about issues such as security, the town census or the important work the council carries out which targets foreign residents in particular.” It was also reported that Mijas council has reduced taxes both for current expatriates and those looking to move to the area.
