Global gathering

by Jimmy Grayling COUNCIL representatives from 30 countries united in Mijas to discuss the issues that most affect expatriates living on the coast.

The Costa del Sol expatriate community is made up of more than 125 different nationalities, although most of the councillors who attended the meeting came from other European countries.

Juan Carlos Maldonado, the Mayor of Mijas, led the meeting of local representatives held in a restaurant in La Cala. On the table for discussion were topics such as security issues, the fight against gender violence and

the change in local tax policy.

The councillor of foreigners, Roy Perez, who was also in attendance, said “Local councils can act as bridges that connect expatriates to both their new home and their countries of origin”.

“In this meeting we were able to discuss the concerns of our residents about issues such as security, the town census or the important work the council carries out which targets foreign residents in particular.”

It was also reported that Mijas council has reduced taxes both for current expatriates and those looking to move to the area.

Lap of luxury TWO five-star Benalmadena hotels have received awards.

The Hotel Vincci Selección Posada del Patio was handed a Puerta Nueva (new door) award by the Malaga Designations of Origin and Mountains of Malaga Regulatory Council.

The authority aims to assess the work of companies, professional bodies and individuals committed to promoting these sectors in the province, and the hotel

was selected for its “firm commitment to first quality products and an excellent gastronomic offer,” a report said.

Meanwhile, the Hotel Vincci Selección Aleysa Boutique & Spa was chosen as the best five-star lodging in Spain by accommodation search engine Trivago.

The website offers lists of the ten best Spanish three, four, and five star hotels, and no others in Malaga province made any of the rankings.

Millionaire’s row MALAGA CITY’S calle Larios is among the most expensive shopping streets in Spain, a report has revealed.

by American real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield lists the 451 most moneyed streets in 68 countries.

Fifth Avenue in New York topped the global ranking, while in Spain Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca and Zaragoza all featured.

Calle Larios was placed ninth, with an average rental price of €1,920 per square metre, a rise of 3.2 per cent on 2016.

The costliest Spanish streets on which to rent commercial property were Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel in Barcelona and calle de Preciados in Madrid.

Safety first MALAGA Council has installed various large concrete bollards and plant pots in the city centre to protect pedestrians from possible terrorist vehicle attacks.

The council agreed to the new measures during a meeting held after the recent Las Ramblas vehicle attack in Barcelona. Authorities also agreed to increase the police presence on the streets and public areas, and strengthen systems which help police cooperate with other branches of law enforcement.

These measures will also be adopted in the other main towns on the Costa del Sol. The council will also hold meetings on a regular basis to present any new ideas which could improve public security when faced with such incidents.

Spain has kept the terrorist alert at level 4, the second-highest level, since the Barcelona attack in August.

While the main pedestrian zones in Malaga centre are now protected from unauthorised vehicles that try to enter the spaces, the council also declared

CONSTRUCTION of a giant shopping centre in Torremolinos has moved a step closer.

British firm Intu, which already has three malls in Spain, received approval from all council departments with the exception of the roads team.

The centre is set to become the biggest shopping and leisure centre on the mediterranean coast.

that they aim to make better use of the video surveillance system.

There are currently 16 cameras installed in locations across the city centre, in locations such as the Plaza de la Constitucion square and the Larios

There is also a fixed police checkpoint in Plaza de la Constitucion, one of the city’s main pedestrian and commercial hubs, with squad cars routinely on patrol there.

A NEW section of the senda litoral coastal footpath will be built from December, the town hall has said.

The â‚Ź1m stretch will link the El Caprichio and El Juncal beach bars and should be ready for April.

OPPOSITION politicians in San Pedro de Alcantara have demanded that the council install a fence around a dangerously-sloping plot of land in the Fuente Nueva district, where only a few metal bars from the previous fence remain.

Drought a reality not a threat

by Jemima Roberts THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA is drafting legislation to improve the water shortage affecting the Guadalhorce reservoir.

Jose Fiscal, Minister for the Environment, explained the move was going ahead because “it does not seem the weather is going to change in the short term.” He added some of the proposals included “using certain wells that are not currently being used and water efficiency measures,” explaining,” all measures will be carried out in coordination with users.”

Fiscal added, “in all Andalusian regions where there is a major problem of supply, a plan is pend-

ing,” explaining drought was “not a threat, it’s a reality.”

The news comes after irrigators last week met with the Junta to discuss measures to avoid further water shortages.

As several reservoirs near their drought threshold, irrigators waited anxiously to find out what proposals would be put in place to reverse the current situation, as well as what watering bans they expect to face next year.

La Vinuela us at its lowest level since 2008, currently at only 23.7 per cent capacity, while the Guadalhorce reservoir is also at its lowest level in many years.

Benjamin Fauli, president of the Asaja farming group, told one publication his group was prepared to consider industrial

action if no improvements were made, “since we have been warning about this for several years and practically nothing has been done to avoid it.”

Jose Fiscal said if more rain does not fall it is “probable” a drought will be declared. While the Junta has met several times this year already to discuss the water shortage, very few of the proposals put forward by irrigators have yet been put into effect.

Since the beginning of the year, irrigators have been banned from watering their crops one day per-week in a bid to reduce water use by 10 per cent. In July the Junta admitted the plan was not doing enough to prevent water shortages.

New fire facilities

by Pippa Harris REFORM works to Malaga’s central fire station will begin next month.

The €3,242,065 project will see equipment at the Paseo de Martiricos station upgraded and improved from December 1 onwards.

The works, which are expected to take around 24 months, will be carries out in six stages and will include improvements to the building’s structure and design. The building covers a total of 5,448.86 square metres, including 2.955,48 square meters on the ground floor, 433.97 square meters of mezzanine and 2,059.41 meters squares on the top floor.

Further improvements will include work to the firefighters’ sleeping and rest area, as well as the creation of a new emergency staircase.

The news comes following a series of firefighter strikes in Malaga, with the city council now agreeing to new work conditions.

The council has said it is prepared to negotiate with the fire men to redraft a document regulating fire workers’ conditions, dating from 1959. The document will see issues including training, shifts and fire stations renegotiated.

The strike had been ongoing in the province for nine months, leading to a potential criminal case for 60 firefight-

The Malaga prosecutor’s office has referred the matter to a judge who will now decide whether the workers are guilty of abandoning their office, a matter punishable by up to two years’ suspension from work and fines.

According to reports, on June 27 five fires broke out simultaneously around the province. Sixty-one firemen were all called and asked to come to work but only one turned up. Twelve said they could not because of child care or doctor’s appointments, three said they were out of the area, one refused to go,

two were on leave and the other 42 did not pick up their phones or return the call.

In the end, Provincial firefighters and Infoca workers were left to tackle the blazes in La Corta, Campanillas, Asperones, Monte Dorado and Atabal.

A court will now decide whether the men broke the “minimum services” conditions of their strike terms, in which, “in the event of an extraordinary situation (fire in buildings, activation of the Emergency Plan or any other incident), it may be necessary to take up the necessary personnel reinforcements to deal with such situation.”

He will be hosted by representatives from the Brexpats in Spain group and will be discussing the latest developments connected with the negotiations on the UK leaving the EU alongside members of the Alicante Diputación. The British Consul, Sarah-Jane Morris, will also be present and there will be an open question and answer session.

Playground hygiene concerns go on

by Richard Johnson PARENTS have complained a playground is becoming overrun with rubbish.

Residents say plastics and paper are left scattered around the park in Puerta Blanca and are complaining about “increasingly worse conditions.”

According to media reports, one local claimed, “on Saturday I passed by and the situation was horrible.

There were two rubbish bins with rubbish scattered throughout the park,” adding, “for a long time this park has been neglected and very dirty. I have never seen cleaning or maintenance personnel in the area and it is totally unhealthy for children.” The resident also complained, “the floor is artificial turf

and is literally covered with bags ... etc. And around the park there is natural grass that is also full of garbage and dog poop.”

In August, alleged poor conditions at a playground in Torremolinos prompted outrage from locals after three people were injured when a swing collapsed in La Bateria Park.

Two girls and one woman were hurt in the incident, which left one of the girls in hospital with two leg injuries, while the other girl, aged 5, was treated for back pain. Her mother was hit on the arm as she tried to stop the structure falling on the children and is now unable to move three of her fingers.

The woman explained, “it was a good thing I had instinctively put my arm up because the bar went

Police tape now seals off the swing-set while the girl’s mother says she is considering denouncing the town hall, claiming the set “was rotten inside”, adding, “after it came down we could see the condition of it and it is a shame. If I had

known before I would not have taken my daughter to the park.”

The council, however, claim the swing came down “because ten children were on it at the same time,” something which the mother denies, saying, “there were only four children on the attraction, it

seems outrageous that they want blame them.” Reportedly there are no signs in parks in Torremolinos warning of weight limits for the rides. The condition of children’s parks to be debated by the council’s next meeting amid claims of splinters, rust and uneven ground.

What squatters’ rights?

by Jemima Roberts MALAGA CITY COUNCIL is waiting for a court to decide whether they can remove squatters from an empty building.

Commercial Court Number One is due to make a decision over whether the council can brick up the building’s entrances or take up any other measures which would see its squatters removed. The court will also consider whether the building, a housing block on Avenida Juan XXII, could be bought by a third party who would reform it.

Following a series of fires at the property, Local Police have been forced to visit the site around 25 times this year, identifying those squatting in it.

The building’s current most recent occupiers were evicted after a latest fire on Sunday.

Residents claim the spot has become a target for thieves since a construction company which owned the building declared bankruptcy. Up to one hundred people have squatted in the building since then, including some families and children. Despite police efforts to evict the occupiers, many have returned.

In October it was revealed police have now

learned the identities of squatters living in a building in Las Lagunas’ Calle Clavel.

Officers from the Local Police and Guardia Civil visited the building to identify the 15 people living there, as well as to tighten security and carry out a cleaning operation.

The Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, visited the site accompanied by the councillors for Industry and Cleaning, Andres Ruiz and Jos Carlos Martin to inspect the building.

The council has now reinforced police surveillance of the Las Flores neighbourood and provided extra cleaning services in an attempt to solve the issue.

The issue of squatters affects many municipalities in Spain and “is a problem for councils that are limited when it comes to taking action. On several occasions this has led to areas becoming run down or unsafe,” according to Mijas Council. In Mijas, the council has already dealt with another squat in the Solaris Building which ended in the squatters being evicted.

The Local Police will continue to reinforce the Las Flores neighbourhood and “guarantee” the safety of residents while the situation is being resolved, according to the council.

Emergency rescues can cost you money

THE COSTS to the public for using the emergency services have been highlighted, especially in the aftermath of the number of rescues from the sea that took place during the recent summer.

Every time a rescue boat is launched, it costs €500 and an extra €300 for each additional half an hour it’s in operation and these costs are passed on to individuals should their deployment be caused due to their negligence. This includes needing to be rescued after entering the sea when a red flag is flying.

Charges are also applied for the use of a helicopter (€236.50) in the case of moun-

tain rescues – especially in the Vega Baja area – when people stray away from official paths or don’t have the correct equipment with them.

Insurance companies tend to cover these costs for the majority of people; however, the publication of these amounts may just make some think twice about putting themselves, and their rescuers, in danger.

65 kilo cocaine haul

MALAGA: Large quantity of cocaine seized in Malaga

by Pippa Harris A MAN has been arrested in Malaga for importing large quantities of cocaine.

The man has been handed over to a court in Alegciras and police have not ruled out further arrests after they discovered the drugs at Algeciras port.

Officers from the Tax Agency and Guardia Civil seized the narcotics after becoming suspicious of a shipment.

Using a non-intrusive scanner, officers discovered the cocaine had been hidden in eight small metal cylinders covered in lead.

The scanner showed officers the shipment’s contents did not match their description and they began to examine the objects. Looking into the cylinders, they found pills which, when tested, where found to be cocaine.

Police tracked the shipment back to a company on an industrial estate in Malaga and discovered the property did not seem to be used for commercial operations.

The drug bust is one of many made

by Spanish police this year. In October, police began investigating a company in Malaga after finding 1,109 kilos of cocaine hidden in cargo containers.

The tax office, National Police, German customs office and Spanish branch of the American Drug Enforcement Administration began working together in August thanks to a tip off about an international crime organisation.

Their investigations led them to the construction company, whose headquarters are in Seville, and the discovery of the shipment.

In August, the leader of Estonia’s largest drug trafficking gang in Russia was arrested in Mijas following a joint operation between Spanish and Estonian police.

Three members of the criminal net-

work, named Kemerovo, which operated out of Estonia, were also arrested in Tallinn, under operation FulcrumCarinatus.

The Estonian authorities began investigating the gang more than two years ago but stepped up their work after the leader of the Russian criminal world in Estonia was assassinated by an accountant in September 2016, sparking a violent turf war.

Police believe the man arrested in Mijas moved to Spain to avoid falling victim to assassination in the wake of increasing gang violence in Estonia, as well as to establish a power base there for drug trafficking, among other crimes, as well as to launder money.

Lack of staff threatens schools

by Jemima Roberts A UNION is claiming lack of education personnel in Malaga is leaving gaps in schools.

The Comisiones Obreras union said 76 vacancies in administrative positions are affecting leave cover as well as schools’ abilities to hire effectively.

The union said cleaners and kitchen staff are in short supply, leading to high competition for staff. While the most urgent positions began to be filled at the beginning of the school year in September, other positions remain unfilled.

The news comes following complaints of a lack of teachers across Malaga province, leading to arguments over hiring decisions.

In September, teachers in Torremolinos complained potential jobs were being filled before interviews had even taken place.

UNION: Lack of personnel leading to gaps in school system

THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA regional authority has announced that work on Mijas access roads is complete.

The confirmation comes after several weeks of renovation on the A-368 which connects the A-7 motorway to Mijas Pueblo.

The project follows earlier schemes to improve the A-7053 from Las Lagunas and A-387 between Alhaurin el Grande and Fuengirola.

The town mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, visited the freshly-resurfaced road, where he said: “We continue working to improve local infrastructure since Mijas is a tourist town, so this will allow residents to allow better security as well as enhancing connections for those who want to visit us.”

Big spender demanded the hiring system be suspended, claiming selection committees were made up of friends of certain applicants.

The town hall, however, claimed the irregularity was down to “human error,” saying the teacher had been at the school last year and “the names of teachers from last year were copied and pasted.” The council had not revealed whether the hiring process will be suspended or cancelled.

Earlier in the summer, it emerged a music teacher who allegedly sexually

assaulted an 8-year-old pupil could still be teaching.

According to media reports, the 35year-old man, who was arrested on September 4 in Fuengirola, could have been transferred to another school after his suspension.

National Police are now analysing the man’s mobile phone and computer after the girl’s mother claimed he touched her daughter when alone in a classroom together one day, before showing her pornographic videos and threatening to kill her if she told anyone.

MALAGA PROVINCIAL COUNCIL is to invest €18.3m into a series of projects in and around Antequera over the course of 2018, an official has revealed. Roads, water supply networks and swimming pools are all on the agenda.

Petty crime A SMALL scale drug-dealing operation has been busted in the Las Albarizas neighbourhood of Marbella, after detectives obtained search warrants for two addresses, seizing heroin, cocaine, cannabis and a hand gun, with four people arrested.

Sex scammers seized A SPANISH woman from Malaga has been detained for allegedly making a fake sex advert offering the services of her boyfriend’s exgirlfriend.

The 29-year-old woman allegedly posted photos of the victim, as well as her contact information, on the online advert which listed her sexual services without her consent.

The woman’s boyfriend was also arrested for his alleged involvement in the incident.

by Richard Johnson RESIDENTS IN Miraflores del Palo are hoping their supply will be reinstated by the end of the week after workers allegedly poured detergent into a well causing foam to pour from taps across the town.

Pilar Gutierrez, manager of the Miraflores del Palo conservation entity, said the community’s deposito was now being emptied and refilled with drinking water before water can be restored. She confirmed, “we will not supply it until we are totally certain it is not harmful.”

National Police started investigating after receiving reports from concerned residents and soon established three people had thrown the liquid down a well after cleaning a storage room in the Calle Pintor Enrique Florido building.

Police believe the incident was unintentional and explained the product was non-toxic and had a PH of zero, although it does have a strong smell. Officers were able to find the alleged culprits quickly after eight empty containers of sodium sulphate were found in the trash near to the well.

Police were able to take fingerprints from the containers, allowing them to identify the workers. The chemical, which is used for foam parties, is the base detergent in many household products including shampoo and toothpaste.

Felix Benitez, president of the Miraflores del Palo Urban Conservation Collaboration Entity, said he began receiving calls from confused residents at around 10.30pm. He explained, “several residents told us they were having problems with the water in their homes which had a strong smell and contained a lot of foam.” He added the organisation soon put their “hands to work to try to find out what happened.”

On investigating, Benitez discovered, “a lot of foam in the water, which also gave off a strong smell.” He said he believed the mistake had been made because “they have recently changed the pipes which move the water which is pumped around and there are some small openings around them. We think that is where the spill occurred.”

Officers from the Local Police went door to door telling residents not to use their tap water before officials then turned off the water supply. The council and Emasa were then notified and sent out nine field technicians who analysed samples and ascertained the water contained, “high concentration detergent.”

Rough going FOAM: Residents hoping to regain their normal water supply soon

Rocking into town THE Hard Rock Cafe will open its first restaurant in Malaga capital at the Muelle Uno open-air shopping centre next to the port.

The new restaurant will occupy a large space, or roughly 1,500 square meters, opposite the entrance to the Pompidou Centre, according to local media sources.

It was rumoured that the chain would take the space known as the ‘golden corner’, the largest space in the shopping centre where the Artsenal cultural project is based.

However, executives eventually decided to take over the space where the ‘100 Montaditos’ restaurant is currently located, which will move to a different site

in the complex.

The work looks set to take nine months to complete, and the restaurant is scheduled to open in autumn 2018.

The opening will mark the second establishment for the restaurant chain in Malaga province, as they already have a site in Marbella.

The Hard Rock Cafe chain is one of the most renowned restaurants brands in the world, and already has eight restaurants in locations across Spain, including Seville, Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid.

The restaurants are known for featuring memorabilia from pop culture icons, including musicians and film stars.

Officers started the investigation after the victim, based in Alicante province, filed a complaint that she was being harassed by strangers who were demanding her sexual services.

The police were able to trace the advert back to the original author, the new girlfriend of the victim’s exboyfriend, and made the arrests.

It is believed the culprits created the advert out of spite towards the victim.

A MOTHER from Mijas has been sentenced to six months in prison for assaulting a teacher.

€20,000 new vehicle gift

by Pippa Harris THE RED CROSS Estepona have been gifted a new vehicle.

The van will be used to transport people with reduced mobility after it was given to the charity by Estepona Council and La Caixa bank’s Obra Social fund.

The town’s Mayor, Jose Maria Garcia Urbano was on hand to deliver the vehicle to the Red Cross, taking time to thank La Caixa for helping the council raise €20,000 for the van.

The remaining amount was given by the Red Cross Malaga and the local association.

Earlier this year, The Mijas Disability Association (ADIMI) was given a €15,000 seven-seater van by the IPV Palace Hotel to transport children to the charity’s new care centre.

The handover event was attended by the Mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado, as well as the Councillor for Social Services, Mari Carmen Carmona.

Mayor Maldonado explained, “we, and all the people of Mijas, must thank the hotel’s owner for his commitment to our community. These children will now be able to attend their therapy without transportation being a problem for their families. Without this fantastic donation,

The van is able to be adapted to carry wheelchairs, and the president of ADIMI, Cristobal Moreno, has explained the charity will do this, saying, “we are going to carry out this upgrade so we can easily transport those with reduced mobility and we will also add more routes and collections points so we can include all our users.”

by Richard Johnson BUS USE has increased by 9.4 per cent in Mijas.

The Coucillor for Transportation and Mobility, Nuria Rodriguez, explained, “there are 18 bus lines, of which four have been created this year. I want to highlight the very successful M-119, which was born in 2016 and which shows our concern that any resident on Mijas, wherever they live, can use public transport.” She added, “the route links Calahonda with La Cala and Fuengirola and has gone from 823 passengers in 2016 to more than 4,500 passengers in 2017.”

The councillor also highlighted the 118 taxi drivers licensed by Mijas and pointed out the “notable increase” in the use of bus lines both by residents and other citizens who travel to Mijas.

Rodriguez added the council was not considering implementing new routes where there is demand because “the service reaches everyone,” and explained studies have shown people prefer to use public transport to private when given the chance. She concluded, “using public transport has many benefits for everyone, as we make the municipality more sustainable by reducing CO2 emissions and helping, for example, to reduce the stress levels of people who travel in private vehicles.”

gether a series of proposals to benefit residents after discovering it had a €30 million underspend this year.

The council will now pass on some of its good fortune in the shape of tax break from 2018.

As of next year, property tax (IBI) will be reduced from 0.508 per cent of a property’s value to 0.44826 per cent, while capital gains tax (Plusvalia), tax on some vehicles, inheritance tax and administrative fees will be lowered.

Capital gains tax will be lowered to 22 per cent, while inheritance tax will soon only apply to houses worth more than €100,000; double the previous

amount of €50,000. Fees for auctions, contracts, administrative forms and competitions will also be waived if they are under €6.

Mari Carmen Gonzalez added, “in the last quarter of 2016, we announced the beginning of a review of a significant number of taxes to benefit residents… after the study process, we approved the motion to lower taxes in 2018.”

Non-polluting vehicles, including electric and solar cars, will receive a 75 per cent tax reduction from next year, while vehicles which minimise pollution, including hybrid vehicles, will see a 50 per cent reduction.

Caught red-handed TWO MEN have been detained in Malaga capital for allegedly being members of a drug trafficking network.

The men, aged 23 and 28, are accused of selling drugs both in the house of one of the accused and in the street. One was reportedly caught in the act while trying to sell drugs

in public.

Officers seized various illicit substances during the operation, including cocaine, MDMA and marijuana, as well as more than €500 in cash.

Police also revealed that there confiscated various tools used to traffic drugs in the house of one of those arrested.

Further armed robbery rocks the coast

by Pippa Harris A TOBACCONIST in Malaga has been held up at gun point.

The National Police are now investigating after a gunman robbed the kiosk on the city’s Calle Juan de Asturia. Sources say the man dumped the gun, which turned out to be a fake, a few metres from the crime scene. It is not yet known how much money was stolen and no arrests have yet been made.

Meanwhile, police have arrested two people in Fuengirola for robbing two pharmacies at gun point.

Another man, aged 21, has also been arrested for blackmailing one of the robbers to commit the crime in exchange for settling a €300 debt.

The alleged robbers are accused of stealing €2,940 from the pharmacies and police searches of their three

homes also revealed a further €27,000 in cash, nearly half a kilo in marijuana and several mobile phones.

The first man was found after a pharmacist complained of being robbed for €700 and officers found the culprit lived near to the shop.

Another robbery took place on October 30 in another pharmacy in Fuengirola, this time involving two men who made off with €2,200.

Police soon arrested the man they had already been investigating for the first robbery as well as a 17-yearold they believe was involved in the second.

The RTN last week revealed three violent burglaries had taken place on the Costa del Sol within less than 24 hours.

Park made public MIJAS COUNCIL has announced that they are to build a new public park in the La Cala Hills area.

Infrastructure councillor Jose Carlos Martin delivered the news alongside his Parks and Gardens counterpart Roy Perez.

“The execution of the work has an initial budget of €232,000 which has already been tendered,” said Mr Martin.

Companies interested in submitting their offers can do so until December 7, and “once we get this administrative step out of the way, work could start at the beginning of next year,” he added.

The new space will be designed for family use and will be located on a plot of around 800 square metres. It will be equipped with proper drainage, a water supply, electricity and lighting, and a cushioned floor will be installed in the childrens’ play area. There will also be picnic tables, benches, and litter bins.

A budget for everyone

by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA COUNCIL is reaching out to residents for ideas for its 2018 budget.

Locals will be able to decide on a special project with funding of up to €1 million. The initiative, put forward

by Mayor Ana Mula, is aimed at allowing residents greater control over how council money is spent.

An online suggestion submission app has been created and all ideas will be analysed for their viability. Mayor Mula explained, “like I always say; My best team is the residents themselves. And in that sense, we have put in place different tools that have allowed us to work as a team with the people of Fuengirola so that they can also send us their requests, their concerns, their complaints, ... and in short, that they participate as a

team to improve our city.”

The news comes after Fuengirola Council last week announced it has reduced its debt by 75 per cent to €10.1 million.

The amount has gone down considerably from the €42 million owed at the end of 2014. The town’s Mayor, Ana Mula, has said the council’s economic policies were responsible for the achievement, claiming they were “above all transparent.”

She added, “I have a plan which is reflected in our yearly budgets and how we manage them. The approach is paying off.” Mayor Mula explained, “thanks to good economic management we even have the opportunity of running a surplus,” which allowed the council to pay off some of its loans.

In September, Fuengirola Council was forced to use €1.8 million from a contingency fund to cover a fine for delays

in paying for works to the Elola Sports Centre.

A court in Malaga passed the judgment after the council delayed paying the €6.5 million bill for the project, which took place between 2005 and 2008. Opposition parties have criticised the governing team for using funds for other projects to pay the fine, although the council says it is “absolutely normal.”

The contingency fund, which was put aside to support families, is said to be running at a surplus, with a source saying, “we have made sure the money will not be needed for its original purpose and all the aid for our residents will be covered.”

Opposition party Ciudadanos said the situation was “disastrous and catastrophic,” while the governing team said the party had shown “no interest” in the issue in the council session.

MIJAS COUNCIL has granted 1,900 construction licences this year.

The building boom has seen 300 more licences granted in 2017 than in 2016, totalling €150 million worth of investment in the municipality.

Andres Ruiz, Councillor for Urbanism, explained the increase showed, “investors feel safe in Mijas. If the pace remains the same, at the end of the year we will have a large number, and we must balance growth with respect for land and a commitment to sustainable development.”

Of the figure, 300 licences were for major works and 1,600 were for minor ones. Councillor Ruiz explained of the smaller projects, “this fact is very significant because they generate enormous activity for the self-employed and the small entrepreneur who are key to the

development of the local economy.”

Earlier this year, the council announced it expects to receive around €200 million of investment from Britons buying up property locally in the next 10 years following Brexit.

Juan Carlos Maldonado, Mijas’ Mayor explained, “this council team has managed to instil confidence in British buyers to come and spend their money in our municipality.”

He added the first €10 million have already hit Mijas, explaining, “the number of licences for building work in Mijas is growing and this real estate development reveals the confidence the town generates.”

Mijas is also attracting substantial investment in its hotel industry. Juan Carlos Maldonado recently announced the council has approved a building permit to refurbish luxury hotel, Byblos, with works beginning after the summer.

Maldonado commented, “the dead-

lines are being met and, if everything continues to go to plan, once the summer season ends, this tourist attraction will have a green light to start refurbishments.” He added, “Byblos is a yearround quality attraction which draws in crowds in the golfing sector and most importantly boosts our town’s economy and generates employment.”

The hotel is located on a plot of 50,873 square meters in the Mijas Golf urbanisation, offering sports equipment rental, a private green, hotel and small public green. Works will include adding 300 parking spaces below ground and 230 rooms.

The hotel’s spa takes up an impressive 5,293 square metres, the hotel 35,424, the private green 15,056 and the private sports area 1,915 square metres, with costs expected to reach €60 million to buy and refurbish the huge space. The investment will involve employing 200 staff directly, and 500 others indirectly.

Crackdown on domestic abuse

by Jemima Roberts MALAGA PROVINCIAL COUNCIL is clamping down on gender violence.

The initiative, which is being publicised on three radio stations, aims “to overcome inequality between men and women, one of the biggest outstanding issues in our democracy.”

Elias Bendodo, President of the Provincial Council, said 27.4 per cent of young people see domestic abuse as “normal,” a figure which he explained was “very alarming.”

Malaga is not the only city taking steps to deal with the issue. In October, Marbella Council put together a programme of activities to honour International Day Against Domestic Abuse.

Isabel Cintado, Councillor for Social Rights, explained the council would organise workshops throughout primary schools in Marbella and San Pedro Alcantara teaching about gender violence. She added sex education workshops would also be put on for secondary school students as well as a poster competition designed to promote equality.

Councillor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona, added, “these meetings go one step further in facilitating communication between the council and foreign residents when there are cases of domestic abuse.” She explained the meeting had discussed helping women by providing food stamps of care packages. She commented, “we are here to help women who are going through this situation and protect victims when they take the first step of reporting the incident so they feel looked after by the council and the community.”

MARBELLA COUNCIL has transplanted 48 specimens of plants to Real de Zaragoza.

The specimens, which come from five plant species, were taken from the La Adelfa coastal path. Councillor for the Environment, Manuel Cardeña, the delegate of the Tenencia de Las Chapas, Carlos Alcala, the provincial deputy of Environment and Promotion of the land, Marina Bravo, and the president of Produnas, Fernando Piquerm visited the project.

Cardeña explained, “the works aim to preserve the specimens that were affected by the work of the Coastal Path in La

Adelfa, responding to the demands of the Produnas association, which does a commendable job in the protection of the dunes, and thanks to the support of the Provincial Council, which has taken on the cost of the action.”

Marina Bravo added, “the dune system of Marbella has a fundamental ecological value in the province and it is necessary to protect it,” explaining, “all these specimens would be lost if the works of the Litoral Path start in a time that is not suitable for the transplant and that is why we have decided to carry it out as soon as possible.”

Stowaway found AN IMMIGRANT has been found in the port of Malaga after reportedly spending up to three days in a shipping container According to reports, workers of the ship known as the ‘festive’, which had come into the port of Malaga from the Moroccan port of Nador, heard noises coming from one of their containers.

Upon inspection, they allegedly found the man, who was reportedly weak and showing signs of dehydration.

After National Police were called, the man was transferred to hospital to receive treatment but procedures have now reportedly been initiated for the man to be returned to his native country.

The town’s Mayor, Angeles Muñoz, thanked everyone who helped the town be picked for the event which will see Spain face the UK from February 2 to 4 next year at the Hotel Puente Romano.

The Mayor explained, “this news fills us with satisfaction and joy because

it confirms the power that Marbella has,” adding, “we present a great and very well planned candidacy.”

She went on, “we have a magnificent city and we have shown that we have enough experience to organise events on a scale of the Davis Cup.” Muñoz, also thanked the confidence shown by the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation in the contest.

MIJAS COUNCIL has visited London to promote the Costa del Sol. The town’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, and Councillor for Tourism, Fuensanta Lima, have placed photographs of the Costa del Sol on 200 London black cabs as part of their drive to unite Britain and Spain.

Mayor Maldonado explained, “the union between the different towns makes our destiny stronger, we complement each other and, in this way, we are more competitive, we continue working to place Mijas as a reference within the British market and with events like these we gain publicity in the middle of the street in one of

the cities where tourists come from around the world.”

Westminster Abbey was the stage for the stunt in an event called street marketing.

Under the slogan Always warm, the images of the Costa del Sol will be present in 200 taxis, not only the exterior of the vehicles, but also the seats.

Councillor Lima added, “it is important to highlight the collaboration between administrations for promoting the Costa del Sol which in turn benefits Mijas. The municipality is collaborating with institutions including the Provincial Council to improve tourism.”

INJURED: Shots exchanged at property suspected to contain drugs

by Pippa Harris A GUARDIA CIVIL officer has been wounded in a shooting in Algeciras.

The agent remains in the Punta Europa Hospital in Algeciras after being shot in one leg in a drugs raid. He is not thought to be in a serious condition.

The Malaga-based officer was injured after shots were exchanged when he approached a property believed to contain narcotics. After a two-hour surveillance operation, officers made their way into the building but found no one. No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, an ex-convict has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing a former National Police Chief Inspector with a machete.

The 64-year-old murderer was on trial for stabbing his 74-old-former friend 16 times. The prosecution sought 18

years’ jail time for murder and two years for weapons offences.

The accused, who did not deny the allegation, “surprised” his victim at his home in Torremolinos before killing him. The suspect waited on the doorstep next to his victim’s body before telling police officers, “he did not keep my secret.” It is not known what secret the man is referring to.

Police said the suspect killed the deceased, who was believed to have been his friend, in a “repeated and surprise” stabbing to the man’s head, neck, thorax, abdomen and back with a machete.

After the attack, the man told a passerby to call the police and sat waiting for them before telling them what he had done.

When asked by police why he was carrying the machete, which was 25 centimetres long and four centimetres wide with a saw blade on the back and

a pointed end, the man supposedly said he always had it on him.

Witnesses said they saw the man “loitering” outside the victim’s house on Calle Boscon before stabbing him.

One driver honked his horn at the attacker several times to get his attention before giving up and calling the police.

Prosecutors claimed the suspect went to his former friend’s house “with the evident purpose of causing him death.”

Prosecutors accepted the accused suffered from bipolar disorder but maintained he was aware of his actions on the day of the murder.

CCTV footage allegedly shows the accused trying to remove the machete from his victim’s body, sustaining a cut to a finger on his right hand which required surgery. The man has now been ordered to pay €100,000 in compensation to his victim’s daughter in addition to his jail time.

I’m getting bloody well fed up, day after day by the mainly so-called actresses, who have had little publicity lately, in the entertainment world, also women in business, politics, even women from normal walks of life, that have all of a sudden remembered that they were raped, or propositioned years ago.

Now let me explain myself, I’m not a misogynist in any way, but it seems that Harvey “Willie Wonka” Weinstein who by all the evidence is a very dirty piece of work, has opened up the flood gates for this barrage of stories from women who claim that they have undergone historic assaults in years previously.

Is it me, or are many of these women who are now making accusations trying to prove something?

Have they had a bad relationship with their partners, husbands, or someone that they took a fancy to in the office or in the pub and were spurned by the man in question.

Many years ago, when I travelled on the underground trains in London, as the train jolted and I accidently brushed up against a female, she did not slap me round my face, as I apologised, nor did she appear in the papers or on TV several years later claiming that I touched her up.

Or the time I called out of my open window from my car, “excuse me madam am I going the right way to so, and so”. She did not call back saying, you’re going the right way, for a clip round the ear.

Has the world gone mad, or have women decided in many cases that they are rightly fed up with men ogling them or smiling at them, oh! how I long for the good old days when men used to doff their hats smile at a woman and say good morning madam, these days if you did that, you would get an earful of expletives from a girl who got so drunk the night before she ended up in bed with some you young oik who looked like

Then again in my research for this column, I have discovered young ladies of today like to take the lead, they stand in groups eyeing up the men, talking amongst themselves of the possibilities of the man’s libido? Or size? Does he have a six pack? Sometimes that is when some of the young ladies of today are still sober enough to stand, or to take their clothes off.

Hang on! now it’s the men’s turn, young men are now coming forward telling how they were assaulted or propositioned by other men, take the latest accusation against Kevin Spacey and Dustin Hoffman both brilliant actors, Spacy was known as having the Rock Hudson syndrome, the handsome actor who died of

aids, who went cruising around Hollywood at night picking up men, sometimes as many as 6 at a time.

And now Westminster has been rocked by the resignation of the Minister of Defence Sir Michael Fallon after he had admitted putting his hand on the knee of a female journalist he had known, when explaining some point, at a party.

What a load of rubbish, what has the world come too, next someone will get arrested for hugging his son, or kissing his daughter on the cheek.

So, when will all this historic nonsense stop? Is it money or fame? A picture in the newspapers or on TV? It may bring you money or notoriety, I’m glad that I’m so ugly no one has ever accosted me.

George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway had much in common with my father, Patrick. The three fought in the same war in the frontlines and in the case of the latter were good friends. So, I suppose all three were qualified to comment on conflicts that occur between men.

The American war correspondent held the view that “No one man nor group of men incapable of fighting or exempt from fighting should in any way be given the power to put this country or any country into war.”

It is difficult to disagree with fellow Republican the English journalist George Orwell. “Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac. One of the most horrible features of war is that all the warpropaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.”

Such were my thoughts when my wife and I spent Remembrance Sunday in Albacete. In this lovely Spanish city was situated the headquarters of the International Brigades during Spain’s Civil War. My Irish-American father fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

The attrition rate was high; of 2,800 Americans 681 lost their lives. The band of brothers comment was; “They gave me a gun and 100 bullets and sent me to fight.”

Used as shock troops the Brigade suffered a 22.5% loss. During the Battle of Jarama, February 27, 1937, the unit lost two-thirds of its strength. Of the 600 men who fought hand-to-hand to secure Suicide Hill only 160 survived.

Today, the Legions’ Albacete headquarters has gone but here and there are the places familiar to my father. The staff at Historico Archivo was friendly and fascinated by father’s letters, photos, documents.

The mementos included a postcard to my mother from the firebrand premier Dolores Ibarruri.

A bit of revision Those of you who have been following this series will have noticed that, bit by bit, we have covered the changes that are made to a Spanish verb depending on who is controlling the action of that verb; that is whether “I” do something, or “you”, or “we” or “they”, and so on.

Just to put all of this into some kind of perspective, I would like to point out three things. Firstly we have been looking exclusively at the present tense, we are not yet talking about the past or future, although we can express the future with our forms expressing intention: voy a, (I’m going to) vas a, (you’re going to) va a (he or she is going to) vamos a (we are going to) van a (they are going to) combining them with an infinitive verb as we have already seen.

Secondly, we have not yet looked in any detail at the exact patterns involved in changing all these verbs.

These are not difficult as such, but

they take a bit of time and effort to explain properly. However, I believe it is more important to start you off understanding the basic principles of why these changes take place and to give you some useable examples to be going on with in the real world.

Thirdly, those of you who know a little bit more grammar will have noticed that I have omitted one of the present tense forms, that is the plural “you” form, otherwise known as the second person plural. Again, this obviously comes

into play once these things are studied in depth, but as this form does not exist in the English language, at this stage of learning it can create more difficulties than it solves and the fact is that we can get an awful long way in communicating without using it at all.

So, before we move on at all to anything new, let’s play around a bit with what we’ve already got. We haven’t done much translation for a while, so here’s a little homework task, the answers to which will appear in next week’s issue. As usual I may throw the odd word in that hasn’t appeared in an article before, but I feel you should cope with this either by using guesswork or, I find that using a dictionary can be extremely helpful! A Lapse in Time by

Every framed print or painting on display in our house depicts a time in our lives that brings back fond memories.

None of the pictures are of high monetary value, but from an emotional point of view, each and every one is a treasure.

One or two represent gifts from close friends here in Spain, whilst there are depictions from our individual past lives and many more since our time together.

In particular we have a number that were painted by a Bermudian artist friend and are representations of scenes from those beautiful islands, where the Princess and I first met.

At this time of year, I take a nostalgic look at the collection of pantomime posters that decorate one side of the stair well – eighteen in all – each with its own mini catalogue of stories to tell.

On the other side a collection of prints and sketches of a particular area in Cornwall where I spent two happy years of my life, that include a framed facsimile of a Great Western Railway poster for the town of Looe where I lived.

A portrait in pastels of my wife executed by my best friend, and a very special painting by my late Dad of Dunster village in Somerset, are just two of the other reminders of our past lives.

But in one of our guest bedrooms, there hangs a tiny unprepossessing pencil drawing of a thatched cottage that has a special significance.

Unsigned by the artist, but bearing the legend ‘Wickhambrook 27/6/53’ in one corner.

It was spotted in a junk shop by a friend some years ago, and he immediately recognised it as the house where we had lived since 1976, and he purchased the drawing for a pound.

The 27th June 1953 was a Saturday, I checked, and was the day an unknown artist decided to sketch a pretty little cottage known then as ‘Grimwoods’.

The fascination for me is not so much what the drawing portrays, but what it does not, because as the artist applied pencil to paper, a skinny

seven year boy was probably playing in the back garden on a council estate in Berkshire; artist and boy totally oblivious of the others’ existence.

And yet many years later the boy and his wife would be the owners of that same house and spend three happy decades of their lives there.

So as I look at the picture, I also think of myself and the invisible silver cord that even then linked me and that unknown Suffolk artist.

If walls could only speak, people sometimes say. Ours do. In volumes.

Readers have been following the nail-biting exploits of Jack Reacher since he first loped into town in Killing Floor in 1997, a striking figure standing at 6ft5 all dirty-blond hair, with a chip on his shoulder and a lethal ability.

His creator Lee Child lays claim to the fact that every second somewhere in the world somebody buys one of his novels.

He starts every new novel on the same date, the 1 September, and has managed to keep fans coming back for more every time, he says of thriller-writing “It’s the only real genre and all the other stuff has grown on the side of it like barnacles.”

British Ambassador Simon Manley attends Remembrance Service in Madrid THE BRITISH Ambassador in Spain, Simon Manley, attended and read a lesson at the Service of Remembrance at St George’s Anglican Church in Madrid.

The Ambassador, who attends this service every year, was joined by diplomatic colleagues from across the Commonwealth, EU and other countries, as well as serving members of UK armed forces based in Spain, as part of NATO operations or bilaterally. In addition, a number of British consular teams also attended Remembrance Day events across Spain.

Simon Manley said: “Remembrance Day is a special moment for us all to remember those who serve, and have served, to keep us safe and free. I will remember the members of my own family who served: my father in the Eighth Army in North Africa and Italy, my maternal grandfather with the RAF in Sri Lanka, and my paternal grandfather with the RFC in France. And it’s absolutely right, in these turbulent times, to underline that the United Kingdom’s commitment to Europe’s security remains absolute.”

Lighting up MALAGA capital is switching on their Christmas lights once more, with this year’s display inspired by Malaga Cathedral so expect to see giant domes and stained glass window displays. The event will take place on Friday November 24 between 6.30pm and 9.30pm on Calle Larios in the city centre.

Pine times SIX giant Christmas trees up to 18 meters high will be dotted around Malaga capital’s centre, such as the Plaza de la Constitucion and Huelin Park, to add some festive spirit to the city. The trees will all boast different, eye-catching designs and be lit up during the evening.

Shopping fever

BLACK Friday is set to strike Malaga province again, giving shoppers the chance to get their Christmas gifts at reduced prices. The event will start in stores on November 24 and continue throughout the weekend, with huge discounts offered on clothing, electronics and toys.

TO REALLY appreciate the art of flamenco, you have to see it interpreted in the hands of a master. Sara Baras is one of the most admired and renowned flamenco performers in the world, and has performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall in New York. A dancer, director and choreographer, she has run her own dance

company ‘Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras’ since 1997. She is also a notable philanthropist, having worked with charities such as the John F Kennedy Foundation for the Performing Arts and the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, which raises funds for those living in poverty in India.

Walk this way THE Ann Cullimore 10,000 step walk for cancer will start outside the Yorkshire Linen store on Mijas Costa to raise money for cancer charities Cudeca and Positively pink.

It costs €5 for adults to enter and €2.50 for children. Sponsorship forms are available in the Yorkshire Linen shop. All the money raised will be split 50/50 between the two charities.

The finish line is at the Cudeca Christmas Fayre at St Anthony’s School. The walk will start at 11am on November 19. Sponsorship forms are available in the Yorkshire Linen store. The dress code is bright and bold.

The walk has been organised to remember Ann Cullimore, a friend of the shop who recently passed away.

Beautiful Bouillabaisse (A classic fish stew fit for a rock star!)

A few years ago we were privileged to have Rod Stewart as a client at The Pink Geranium which was my first ever restaurant back in the good old days!

I will always remember that when he walked in, the whole restaurant went absolutely quiet! He had such a presence, nobody bothered him apart from one client wanting to know why he gave up playing football to sing!

I came out of the kitchen and asked what he would like me to cook, he was with his wife Rachel Hunter. He replied that he loved fish to start like scallops and he loved lamb. So I went back to my kitchen and cooked him a mini bouillabaisse with scallops. It’s a sort of fancy fish stew with a sauce made from Lobster and prawn shells, it is delicious. You could serve it with scallops or a mixture of shellfish (as we do at The Little Geranium in La Cala). Its actually a great Christmas dish because it’s a real treat and by adding lobster or prawns and other fish and shellfish makes it extremely decadent as a sharing dish for the centre of the table just like the French serve it.

The other useful thing is that the

sauce which is absolutely delicious can double up as a soup ( Or even an amuse…A pre starter to amuse the taste buds). We often serve it like this in a foamy format drizzled with homemade truffle oil.

Anyway back to Rod because when I approached his table to check everything was OK, he stood up and kissed me on the lips! Id marry you if I wasn’t already married he said. I think you like marriage a bit too much I laughed and Rachel didn’t look amused and so I tried to undig myself and made it worse!

Back to the kitchen Chef Rod shouted out!

So here it is the best Bouillabaisse you will ever eat, it’s a dish that is always on the menu at The Little Geranium with my signature on it.

Not everyone knows the story of why it became a signature dish but when your recipes are endorsed by a rock star, they qualify!

Bouillabaisse sauce Trimmings and pieces from a lobster ( Can be a frozen lobster as its just for sauce) 500g of whole prawns 500g of Lobster shells ( or prawn shells) 125 ml tomato concentrate paste or Frito

Lamb Korma Ingredients 2 & 1/4 pounds cubed lamb meat, 4 teaspoons olive oil, divided, 1 brown onion, chopped. 1 red potato, peeled and cubed, 1/2 cup curry powder, 1/2 cup water, 1/3 cup coconut milk, 1/3 cup drained canned chickpeas Preparation Preparation time – 10 minutes. Cooking time – 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Method 1. Place lamb in a bowl and drizzle 2 teaspoons olive oil over lamb; stir until coated.

2. Heat remaining 2 teaspoons olive oil in a saucepan over low heat; cook and stir

1 litre of fish stock ( You can make this or buy a ready made one) 3 sticks of fresh celery ( chopped ) 1 leek ( cleaned and washed and chopped into smallish pieces) 1 onion ( peeled and sliced) 4 cloves garlic ( peeled and sliced) 2 pieces star anise ½ glass of Pernod to finish 2 glasses white wine 1 glass of brandy 250 ml thick cream 1 dessertspoon of cornflour optional

In a large pan sweat off the shells and fish pieces and add the whole prawns. Now sweat the vegetables and star anise with the shells and prawns until coloured. Now add the tomato paste and then finally the fish stock.

Cook out on simmer for at least an hour.

To finish add the cream and cook and whisk it in for a few minutes then pass the contents through a sieve mashing as much of the prawn and shells to extract the flavor or use a blender and blend the contents and then pass through a sieve into a fresh pan and reduce a little. Finally add the wine, brandy and Pernod whisk in

and taste and adjust seasoning. If you need the sauce to be a little thicker add a little cold water to the cornflour and whisk in. Ensure that you cook the cornflour out for a minimum of 10 mins.

To serve add a little warm milk and blend the contents with an electric hand blender until light and foamy.

For a bouillabaisse you can add something like this below per portion all cooked separately then simply pour the lovely sauce over and enjoy!

Bouillabaisse fish ( Approx per person as a main course or half it as a starter) 2 king scallops pan fried 6 large prawns simply grilled ½ tail ( or a claw) of cooked fresh lobster 6 cooked mussels in their shells 4 clams in their shells A small piece of poached fresh salmon ( optional) Serve with warm crusty bread and some Aioli on the side Recipe by Steven Saunders FMCGB www.thelittlegeranium.com

onion until softened, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and add potato to onion.

3. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat; cook and stir lamb, working in small batches, until browned, about 5 minutes per batch. Transfer browned lamb to onion mixture.

4. Stir curry into lamb-onion mixture and cook over medium heat for 1 minute. Add water to lamb-onion mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover saucepan, and simmer until lamb is cooked through and potatoes are tender, about 45 minutes.

5. Mix coconut milk and chickpeas into lamb-onion mixture and simmer until heated through, about 5 minutes.

Preparation time – 15 minutes.

Cooking time – 25 minutes.

Ingredients

2 russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes, 2 cups olive oil, 1 tablespoon salt, 3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 onion, diced, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 clove garlic, finely chopped, 1 red chilli, minced, 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1 (14oz) can whole peeled tomatoes, drained, 1/4 cup mayonnaise

Method

1. Combine potatoes, 2 cups olive oil, and 3 teaspoons salt in a large cold frying pan.

Heat on low and cook until potatoes are softened, 12 to 15 minutes. Increase heat to high and fry until golden, 5 to 6 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

2. Heat 3 tablespoons olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir onion with 1 teaspoon salt in the hot oil until onion has softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Add garlic, chilli, and smoked paprika; simmer for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and return to a simmer. Transfer tomato mixture to a blender, cover, and puree until tomato sauce is smooth.

3. Serve patatas bravas with tomato puree and mayonnaise for dipping.

health Time to change... for the better

ROBERT LANGSTON knew he had to change his life. He was 37, weighed 16.2 stone (103kg) and couldn’t walk down his local high street without losing his breath.

He had diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, and knew that his poor diet and a lack of physical activity had contributed to his condition.

Robert, a painter-decorator from Walsall, Staffordshire, had been unfit to work for several years. He had been in and out of hospital with ill health.

He contacted Time to Change, an exercise advice scheme run by Walsall Council’s Sport and Leisure Development Services in partnership with NHS Walsall, which he had read about. The scheme helps people raise their activity levels gradually.

He began the exercise classes Time to Change recommended. Twelve months later, Robert has turned his life around.

He’s lost more than 3 stone (20kg), improved his health and returned to full-time employment. “I wanted my life back,” says Robert, now 38. “I was on heavy medication for asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure.”

The fitness classes, known as PACE, involved an hour a week of circuit

training, which alternates short bursts of intensive exercise with rest.

“I went to the exercise classes once a week and slowly the weight started to come off,” says Robert. “As I saw the results, I got more and more into it.”

Within weeks of beginning his new active lifestyle, Robert’s asthma improved and his better general health meant he needed less medication.

After six months, he had enough confidence to leave the scheme and go to the gym on his own, and has also stuck with his healthy eating regime, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables.

“I haven’t been on a crash diet or anything like that,” he says. “I’m just eating the right stuff in the right quantities. It’s never too late to turn your health around,” says Robert.

“I was in pretty bad shape before I decided I wanted to change.”

Large babies result of obese mothers

OBESITY during pregnancy, independent of its health consequences such as diabetes, may account for the higher risk of giving birth to an unusually large infant, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health.

Macrosomia - large body size at birth - is common among children born to obese women, particularly those who have gestational

diabetes (high blood sugar during pregnancy).

Macrosomia increases the risk that an infant will experience bone fracture during delivery. It also increases the likelihood that the infant will need to be delivered by caesarean section. Having a large infant also increases a mother’s risk for postpartum hemorrhage, or excessive bleeding at birth.

2. Use a cotton swab to press some of the mixture (it should achieve a pastelike consistency) firmly under the tip of each nail as well as over the top of the nail, covering all the nails on one hand.

3. Allow the mixture to remain in place for about three minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Banish winter tiredness Many people feel tired and sluggish during winter. This is due to the lack of sunlight, which disrupts our sleep and waking cycles.

Eat more fruit and veg When it’s cold and dark outside, it can be tempting to fill up on unhealthy comfort food. However, it’s important to ensure you still have a healthy diet and include five portions of fruit and veg a day.

Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, swede and turnips can be roasted, mashed or made into soup for a comforting winter meal for the whole family. Explore varieties of fruit and veg that you may not normally eat.

Make your porridge with semiskimmed, 1 per cent or skimmed milk, or water, and don’t add sugar or salt.

Artichoke for a healthy digestion of fats The artichoke (cynara scolymus) is a thistle-like plant with big round flowers that can reach a height of 2 metres.

Most of us know the artichoke as a delicious vegetable of which only the heart and the fleshy parts of the petals are eaten. It originated in the Mediterranean area, where it has been known for hundreds of years as a natural aid in the digestion of fatty substances and also as a remedy against flatulence and bloatedness. However, it is not the edible parts of the artichoke that are used as a natural remedy, but its leaves and roots. These contain a bitter substance (Cynarin) that has a stimulating effect on the digestive system and the metabolism, improving the function of the pancreas, gall bladder and liver.

A well-functioning fat digestion and a healthy metabolism is essential for wellbeing and health. Q. Why are my eyes more at risk when I’m skiing?

A. The atmosphere on the slopes is very clear and the reflection of sunlight on the slopes is very strong. These two factors combine to be potentially damaging to the eyes and could lead to long term effects.

Q. How does this affect my eyes?

A. Although people know how important it is to keep skin protected from the sun, few realise how damaging UV rays can be to the eyes. The UVB rays can irritate the surface of the eye, causing a painful form of sunburn of the eye (called photokeratitis). You may not even be aware whilst out in the snow, as the effects can take 6-12 hours to develop. Long-term exposure to UVB can cause cataracts and even ocular tumours.

Q. How can I protect my eyes on the slopes?

A. All you need is good sunglasses or goggles, but make sure you choose the right ones. Always read the label carefully and choose the maximum protection factor available and a wraparound style to avoid light and wind coming in from the sides.

How to make a birdseed wreath Make clever use out of a Bundt pan by creating a pretty gelatine-birdseed feeder for your feathered friends.

MATERIALS • • • • •

3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup warm water 3 tablespoons light corn syrup 1 package unflavoured gelatine 4 cups bird food (such as seeds, peanuts, berries, dried fruits) • Bundt pan or other mould • Non-stick cooking spray

Step 1:

Mix up edible glue Stir the gelatine into the warm water until dissolved. Whisk in the corn syrup and flour. Stir well, until there are no more lumps.

It will make a thick gooey paste.

Step 2:

Stir in bird seed Mix the seeds with the paste in a large bowl, using a spatula to stir and fold until all of the seeds are coated and the edible glue is distributed. The mixture will start getting very sticky. Make sure it’s well mixed to keep the wreath from falling apart.

Step 3:

Mould wreath

Spray the Bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray. Using the spatula, press the seed mixture into the Bundt pan. Be sure to press the mixture down firmly until it’s well packed and even. Set the pan aside overnight.

The mixture will harden and turn white, and the surface will be firm and dry when it’s ready. Test by pressing gently on the surface,

and allow more setting time if it’s at all soft.

Step 4:

Add finishing touches Once the wreath is hard, gently remove it from the mould by turning it upside down onto a plate. Tie ribbons, garnish with sprigs of greenery or berries, and hang it for the birds to enjoy!

With hundreds of colour, pattern and texture options though, taking your pick can be a confusing process. We’ve detailed the different types of wallpaper below to get you started.

Lining Paper Lining paper pretty much does what it says on the tin. It’s a plain paper which is used to cover imperfections or dark colours on a wall prior to wallpapering or painting.

Lining paper is available in various grades, or thicknesses, with the thicker types being much better at covering imperfections, and also easier to hang, being less likely to tear.

When using lining paper prior to wallpapering, it should be hung horizontally on the wall, so that the joins will never match up with the wallpaper on top.

If you are planning to paint the lining paper, you can hang it vertically as per normal wallpaper.

Polystyrene Sheeting Rolls of thin polystyrene veneer can be used as a wallpaper lining.

This makes the walls feel much warmer and reduces condensation in rooms, so it can be useful in bathrooms and kitchens, or bedrooms that have a condensation problem.

The only problem with polystyrene is that it can easily be dented and marked, so it should be avoided in busy, high-traffic areas.

Wood Chip Wallpaper A leftover from the 1970’s, when it was very popular, woodchip paper is a cheap way of covering imperfect walls, but is best avoided if possible.

Also known as ingrain wallpaper, woodchip is made by trapping small chips of wood in the paper when it is manufactured.

It is available in a variety of grades, and as always, the higher grade, or thicker papers, provide the best coverage and are easier to hang. woodchip comes in plain white and is designed to be painted over with emulsion.

Anaglypta Wallpaper Anaglypta wallpapers are thick, durable papers that are embossed with a pattern. There are a huge number of patterns available.

Sometimes anaglyptas are available in colour, but usually they are designed to be painted with emulsion paint.

The typically high grade of these papers makes them easy to hang, and the embossing means they are suitable for covering slight imperfections in the wall. However, they are prone to stretching, so be careful when hanging.

Supaglypta Wallpaper Supaglypta is, as the name suggests, a super version of anaglypta wallpaper.

Cotton fibres are used in the manufacturing process to produce the embossed effect, making supaglypta particularly tough and durable.

The pattern on supaglyptas is often more complex and raised slightly higher than on an anaglypta.

Their durability means that supaglyptas are suitable for hightraffic areas such as hallways and stairways.

Flock Wallpaper Flock wallpaper is one of the more expensive options. A velvet-like fibre pattern gives a very luxurious, old-fashioned feel.

It is hard to resist stroking a flock wallpaper, so they can easily become marked.

Flock is also a tricky wallpaper to hang, as it takes skill to avoid getting any paste on the flock, which will mark and ruin the texture.

Foil Wallpaper Metalized papers can be very attractive. These reflective patterns can help to lighten up a dark corner, but be careful in your choice as they tend to use a lot of dark colours.

Because of the reflective nature of these papers, foil wallpaper shows any lumps and bumps on the wall so make sure your wall is as smooth as possible before you start, or use a lining paper.

Be careful not to get any wallpaper paste on the foil as it will ruin the reflective coating. Foil papers are often ‘paste the wall’ type papers as this makes them easier to hang.

Printed Wallpaper Printed papers come in a huge range of colours, designs and qualities, from mass-produced, machineprinted designs to high quality hand-printed patterns.

The hand-printed versions are of course more expensive than their machine-printed counterparts.

Do not use printed wallpapers in areas where there is a lot of steam or condensation, as the inks used

are often water-based.

Be careful when hanging printed wallpapers, as the delicate paper can tear easily and the complex patterns can be hard to match up.

Vinyl Wallpaper Vinyl wallpapers consist of a printed skin of vinyl stuck onto a base layer of paper.

Vinyl papers are tough, hardwearing and washable, although some have a thicker layer of vinyl than others so will be more durable.

Vinyl papers are suitable for kitchens and bathrooms as they are resistant to condensation and steam.

Blown Vinyl Wallpaper Blown or expanded vinyl looks similar to an embossed or anaglypta paper, with a raised pattern, but the pattern is coloured. Vinyl paper cannot be painted over.

Washable Wallpaper Although vinyl wallpapers are washable, there are also wallpapers available which are specifically marketed as washable.

These papers are printed with water-resistant ink and coated with a layer transparent plastic.

Washable papers are particularly suited to kitchens, where steam and grease gather, meaning the walls require regular washing.

Traffic lights for motorways plan TESTS have begun this week on an innovative, pilot project designed to reduce congestion along the M62 near Warrington in Cheshire.

Highways England is delivering the project at Croft Interchange - where junction 21a of the M6 meets junction 10 of the M62 – to give drivers smoother and more reliable journeys along the eastbound M62, one of the busiest commuter congestion hotspots in the region.

When the testing is completed in December / January, electronic information signs and variable mandatory speed limits on the M62, will combine with traffic lights on the motorway link roads from the M6, to provide smoother traffic flows.

Andy Withington, Highways England’s programme delivery manager for the North West, said: “This is an opportunity to combine existing technology and traffic management systems in a novel way to

Seatbelt t-shirt wearers warned

THE Guardia Civil have warned of the dangers to your life – and to your wallet – for wearing an increasing popular design of T-shirt when driving.

The shirt’s design includes a diagonal black stripe across a white background that simulates a safety belt and is being used by many safety-last drivers to deceive the traffic cameras.

The T-shirt has been advertised on a well-known website in different sizes and without promoting the price under the phrase of, “Funny anti-fines T-shirt. It simulates the seat belt for those that don’t want the hassle or

are in a hurry. Ideal as a gift, a joke and perfect for parties.”

Guardia Civil officers emphasises that wearing a seatbelt is key to saving lives and warns that 23 per cent of deaths in accidents are caused by people not wearing them. Penalties for not wearing a seatbelt can be as high as €200 and 3 points off the driver’s license.

This fake T-shirt isn’t a new phenomenon however as, back in 2012 there was an increase in the number of fines for people not wearing seat belts following a warning from Chinese authorities of the proliferation of these shirts.

Driven by humans...parked by robots THERE IS no doubt that airport parking can be a significant source of grief on holidays and business trips. As well as being expensive, upon your return you’re guaranteed to forget which zone you parked in, and there’s always a chance that a careless holidaymaker or an overzealous valet parking employee will have dinged your door while you’ve been away. It’s the stuff of nightmares.

Fortunately, the team at Stanley Robotics has come up with a solution that could consign all of that to history. Their robot - affectionately named Stan – automatically collects cars from designated drop-off areas and transports them to the nearest car park until owners are ready to reclaim their vehicles.

The process begins when customers make a booking via the company’s app or website, before parking in a “well lit and spacious” garage close to their terminal. Then once they’ve confirmed their arrival on the accompanying touchscreen, they’re free to leave for their flight, taking their keys with them.

At this point, Stan will step in to collect deposited vehicles, automatically adjusting to each car’s dimensions as it slides underneath and gently lifts the car off the ground. Then, when it has reached the airport’s car park, it uses “the latest sensor technology” to precisely manoeuvre vehicles into rows of five.

The system is being touted as a money-saver for airports, with Stanley Robotics claiming that it can increase the number of cars in a given area by as much as 50 per cent. They also point out that operating costs would plummet without the need for regular cleaning and maintenance.

The fully electric system is advertised as a zero-emissions solution, and while they neglect to mention where the electricity may be generated, each robot is said to be capable of processing between 20,000 and 30,000 vehicles per year, managing up to 400 parking spaces at any one time.

The system’s final party trick is that each booking contains a record of customers’ flight details, meaning that cars can be returned to the easy-access drop-off point in anticipation of their owners’ return.

Stanley Robotics’ valet solution is already in operation at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, and having recently secured millions of pounds in investment, there’s every chance it could become a more common feature at airports across the globe in the very near future.

Akash Choudhary, a 15-year-old left-arm seamer, produced a one-man demolition job while playing for Disha Cricket Academy against Pearl Academy in a tournament in Jaipur.

Choundhary, opening the attack for Disha, finished with 4-4-0-10.
