by Michael Cano WHEN a middle aged couple and their daughter became lost due to fog whilst climbing on La Concha above Marbella they knew what to do.

Although disorientated and unable to find their way down, they called 112 emergency services who in turn contacted the Marbella Fire Brigade.

Two firemen and two officers from the Guardia Civil Mountain unit were dispatched to the general direction in which they

thought they had become lost and quickly found them.

The father who is British and his German wife and their daughter who travelled to the mountain from Estepona were not injured, just tired but were afraid to wander around without being able to see where they were going.

They were given food and water as well as directions and as the fog cleared, so they decided to continue walking so that they could safely from the mountain.

The glass lift TORREMOLINOS COUNCIL is building a 30metre high lift to Parque La Bateria.

The €277,000 project is designed to be a tourist attraction as well as provide access between the park and Avenida Carlota Alessandri.

The lift will be partially enclosed by glass, allowing passengers a view of the surrounding areas and will have room for 8 people.

The project was finally approved after an agreement was reached between the governing PSOE party and Costa del Sol Podemos.

Works have already begun to Avenida Carlota Alessandri, with bollards removed and the road narrowed from four lanes to two. It is hoped even more people will now be able to visit the park after it received 310,596 visitors last year.

The park was described by a technical report as, “a natural resource with conditions and attributes that make it different for tourists. It is a space for visitors which in addition to its beautiful landscape, offers a historic value and an insight into the military systems on the coastal area of the Costa del Sol.”

Looking up NEW business in Estepona is booming as the council has reported that it granted 267 licences for new ventures in the first nine months of 2017.

Sharp drop in jobless

by Staff Reporter THE number of unemployed has decreased in Malaga province by almost 40,000 people but this allegedly due to the decrease in working population.

A recent Spanish Labour Force Survey (EPA) revealed that the number of unemployed workers now stands at around 160,000, which amounts to 20.8 per cent of the region’s population eligible to work and is the lowest the figure has been since 2008.

However, the drop in employment is allegedly not linked to the creation of jobs but a significant increase in those who have retired or are no longer capable of working.

The region’s fall in employment

was the third highest recorded in the whole of Spain, beaten only

by Madrid, whose unemployment levels have dropped by 92,600, and Barcelona (54,400).

However, the increase in people working again has only increased by nearly 14,000. On the other hand, the number of people entering retirement has increased more than 14,000, the number of students has increased by 2,300 and the number of self-declared homemakers has increased by 13,500.

The summer months typically bring positive employment numbers due to the impact of the tourism industry, and led to an increase of more than 6,000 new jobs in 2017.

ment rate is currently four per cent below the Andalusian average (25 per cent), but is still more than four per cent above the national average (16 per cent).

Spain’s unemployment numbers on average were also down 20 per cent, with the number of those in employment exceeding 19 million for the first time since 2009, and the number of those out of work had dropped by almost 600,000 since 2016.

Fatima Bañez, the Minister of Employment and Social Security, declared that there are still "a million reasons” to push for more opportunities in the job sector and reach the Government's goal of 20 million in employment in 2019.

Mother ‘burgles homes’ while children are in school A WOMAN has been arrested after allegedly leaving her children at school to go on a crime spree.

The Guardia Civil identified the woman after four months of investigations under “Operation Reja 2017,” after becoming convinced a family was behind a spate of robberies in Malaga.

They said two men and a woman belonging to the same family “had been committing these crimes since March,” concentrating in the west of the municipality. All three are now in prison awaiting trial.

Officers claimed the woman would carry out surveillance on the intended houses after leaving her children at school. Apparently she and her two relatives would then use hydraulic jacks to break bars on property windows and gain access. Police believe the family are

behind a series of robberies in Fuengirola, Mijas and Benalmadena between March and August.

They explained a fourth person from Ghana was also arrested on suspicion of selling the goods stolen by the family on the black market. He has since been released pending further investigations.

On searching the family’s homes, officers allegedly found a pistol, cash, items stolen from the burgled houses, jewellery and 200 grams of marijuana. Police say they may still uncover more robberies committed by the group and confirmed they have now returned any stolen items found to their rightful owners.

The three face trial for belonging to a crime group, illegal weapons’ possession, crimes against public health and armed robbery.

Fresh fears over dog safety

by Jemima Roberts A WOMAN in Mijas has told the council a group of wild boar came into her house and attacked her dog.

Opposition politicians have now asked the council to consider proposals to control numbers of the animals after similar reports of sightings and attacks on golf courses and in residential areas. Mario Bravo, Deputy Spokesman for the Partido Popular (PP), explained, "a resident from Rancho de la Luz told the PP that a group of wild boars entered her house on October 16 and attacked her dog, which was badly injured and is currently fighting to save its life. This same English resident says she has seen herds of up to 27 animals in her residential area, where dozens of families live, many of them with children.”

The council responded to the request explaining it was working with the Junta de Andalucia’s Department for the Environment to work on a solution. Jose Antonio Gonzalez, Mijas’ Councillor for the Environment, said the issue, which has been a problem for several years, was this year exacerbated by low rainfall, forcing boars to enter residential areas to seek water. He said, "this situation is complicated by the lack of rain and lack of food, as well as the fact that they lack any natural predators in the area which would normally control population numbers.” He added a census was now being undertaken to ascertain the number of wild boars in the area.

German fugitive held POLICE have arrested a fugitive wanted in Germany for attempted assault.

The 55-year-old from Cologne fled the country in June this year after getting into a heated argument with his neighbour and throwing an axe at her.

Police located and arrested him in Malaga City and he will soon be sent back to Germany where he could face up to 10 years in prison for attempted aggravated assault.

Cleaning up Mijas, dog poisonings last month killed 10 pets in one week. In Marbella last month one dog was killed after eating poison found in a children’s playground, causing safety concerns among parents.

Police closed the playground in La Campana after finding the poison. The play area on Avenida Miguel de Cervantes is used by residents with and without pets, as well as children.

One resident, Francisco Montijano, told a publication, “in addition to animals, it could affect some of the children who play there every day.” Other neighbours told media

outlets the poison comes in a “barely perceptible” liquid form, and have speculated the poison may have been left in three locations.

Police have collected samples of the liquid but residents remain concerned, telling one publication, “we are afraid to take our dogs out and have to walk them with our eyes peeled to stop them from going into the undergrowth and eating something which could kill them.” Mr Montijano added, “we are checking the area on a daily basis to make our walks safe we but are frightened someone will start spreading the poison further afield.”

IN anticipation of potential heavy rain later this year, the Estepona council has started work on clearing detritus from rural roads in the municipality and so far has covered 80 kilometres on 12 roads.

Minor found REPORTS from family members that a 15-year-old had disappeared from Torremolinos have now been proven groundless as the minor has now been found in Romania in the company of their mother.

Port project pushed back

by Staff Reporter THE ex-mayor of Marbella has condemned the decision of the Andalusia High Court of Justice (TSJA) to delay work on the La Bajadilla project.

The project, valued at more than €80 million, was originally proposed by a company belonging to Qatari Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani and would have transformed the La Bajadilla port in Marbella. The proposal included building more than 850 moorings for fishing, leisure or sports boats, two mooring for yachts up to 125 meters in length and a new dock for cruise boats.

The renovation was estimated

to have created around 3000 jobs altogether and should have started in 2012.

Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani, who is also president of Malaga Football Club, was meant to take on 97 per cent of the shares through his company Nasir Bin Abdullah & Sons while the city council provided the remaining three percent.

However, after five years of delays, the Sheikh missed the final deadline to present his final plans to Marbella’s port authority (APPA) and lost the contract.

The APPA then entered into talk with other companies in the hope of finding a new investor.

Pensioner left with €11,000 tax bill

A LEGAL complexity has led to an 85-year-old woman being left with a property tax bill of more than €11,000 each year.

The widow, who lives in Senda del Pilar, only owns 0.13 per cent of the land she pays tax on but is forced to pay the whole bill due to various administrative complications.

Her family has called on Torremolinos Council and the Provincial Council to help fix the problem several times. However, while the council accepts there has been a “moral injustice,” it can only add the bill is “within the law.”

Her family says it has now referred the case to the relevant Ombudsman and add her account has now been blocked by her bank since she cannot pay the bill. They add the situation is “inexplicable,” and cannot believe it has continued, “without anyone solving it.”

Other families have also written to Torremolinos Council demanding the failed Senda del Pilar urbanisation be reorganised since works to the planned development have not gone ahead.

The site was originally designed to house a golf course and other facilities, attracting families to buy in the development. However, the plans never went ahead, leaving families with high property tax and maintenance bills for resources they have never received.

by Richard Johnson SPAIN’S Supreme Court has ruled people who have already renegotiated their mortgages with their banks can still reclaim their money in court.

The decision means anyone whose bank has agreed to lower their interest repayments can still reclaim excess interest payments made in previous years.

While the move may mean lower monthly repayments and lump sum pay-outs for thousands, it seems they may have years to wait for court settlements. In September it was revealed thousands more people than expected had submitted floor clause mortgage claims since a specialist court opened in June, leading to significant delays.

Just one court in Malaga city was assigned to deal with the banking claims from across the entire province, however, and has now received 2000 cases, double the amount expected.

After a European Court of Justice ruling last December, people who believe they were sold a floor clause mortgage have been able to claim the money back. Lawyers, prosecutors and judges had voted unanimously against forcing one court to deal with so many claims. It now seems their concerns were well-founded as the court has since received twice the expected annual amount in just two months.

According to one judge, Jose Maria

Paez,"unless more resources are allocated, it will be very difficult to process this number of demands without incurring big delays.”

Belen Rincon, a lawyer specialising in bank claims, explained claimants have been forced to take their cases to court after banks have been reluctant to pay out. He claimed as a result, "it is estimated that the limit of cases that can be treated by a standard court a year is 1,700 or 1,800; after that it collapses.”

He added this will affect how long it takes to deal with each case, explaining, "taking into account that in two other courts, which have four judges, they are looking at settling claims in 2021, it is clear that claimants will have to be patient.” He added banks are taking advantage of the backlog and offering smaller compensation packages for early settlement, explaining, "many consumers end up accepting even though it is unfair because they cannot afford to continue paying the interest for four more years more.”

A second specialist court to deal with these claims is planned for Malaga but no date has yet been announced. Jose Maria Paez believes at least another four may be necessary to deal with the weight of cases.

Floor clauses were the fixed interest rates hidden by banks in the small print of mortgage contracts. The European Court of Justice ruled in December last year that Spanish banks must pay back the money they made from consumers, the bill for which is expected to run to billions of euros.

Three armed robberies rock the Costa del Sol

by Pippa Harris THREE violent burglaries have taken place within less than 24 hours.

The string of assaults, which police have not said are related, began when a gunman held up a pharmacy on Calle Infantes in Huelin. The assailant allegedly wore a ski mask before hitting an employee and threatening him for money.

The next day at 8.40am a man wearing a balaclava and motorcycle helmet robbed a branch of Unicaja in Calle La Hoz, just 50 metres from the pharmacy.

The man apparently pulled out a gun and told staff to give him money before a woman ran out into the street and raised the alarm. The man escaped before police arrived. According to one publication, a witness explained a bank employee was injured in one hand.

Minutes later at 9am an assailant wearing a motorcycle helmet and wielding an axe held up a Unicaja in Benamargosa. At the time of the robbery only the bank’s two staff members were in the building. The man threatened the staff and made off with around €18,000 in cash, some of which fell onto the

street as he made his escape. Passersby apparently returned money they had found on the street to the bank.

The Guardia Civil has now located the alleged perpetrator and recovered the money. They are now investigating whether he was working with an accomplice.

The spate of burglaries are not the only violent crimes to hit the Costa del Sol in recent months. Last month, five people were arrested after shots were fired at a nightclub in Marbella,

leaving four wounded.

Local Police in Estepona found the burned-out vehicle belonging to the shooter after the incident at the Casa Masa club on Calle Victor O’hayon Taplero. One of those injured was left in intensive care after being shot in the chest and stomach, while three others remained in hospital with bullet wounds to their legs or stomachs.

The National Police are now investigating what caused the incident, which took place at around 9pm.

Four seized in cannabis club probe THREE men and one woman, aged between 24 and 30, have been detained by police in Benalmadena for allegedly selling on marijuana outside of the confines of a cannabis ‘association’.

The president and secretary of the association have both been held, along with two other members of the group. The accused allegedly used the association as a cover up for their drug trafficking activities.

During the investigation, officers seized 2,600 grams of marijuana, 300 grams of hashish, a vehicle and more than €2,300 in cash, among other effects.

Malaga’s Anti-Drug Prosecution Office had been investigating four separate cannabis clubs in Malaga province for months for allegedly distributing the drug illegally. The association in Benalmadena had already been shut down several times in the past by police.

On paper, cannabis associations are required to have a limited number of members, who are all identified in the books, and are forbidden from selling the drug for profit or donating it to non-members.

Pirate cabs

by Jemima Roberts POLICE in Malaga are searching out illegal taxi drivers operating in the city. So far they have unearthed 118 vehicles, made up of 53 “pirate” cabs and 65 rental cars using a driver, none of whom had a licence to carry passengers. Local Police officers foiled 44 of the “pirate” taxi drivers as they entered Malaga Airport, eight were found near the city’s bus station and one was located in the Alameda de Capuchinos.

Officers at Malaga Airport have carried out 120 vehicle check stops this year, checking a total of 2,035 vehicles and finding 173 which did not carry the correct licence.

The news comes after protest over private hire vehicles turned ugly in August, leading to 10 arrests.

Following a taxi strike in Malaga, a number of people were arrested by the National Police on suspicion of coercion, property damage and assault. According to media reports

at the time, the National Police was keeping an investigation into incidents during the industrial action open and did not out further arrests.

The five-day strike over the proliferation of private hire vehicles cause travel chaos in the city at one of the busiest times of the year. Taxi drivers refused to work at Malaga Airport, instead sitting in the vehicles to protest the success of private taxi firm Cabify. Holidaymakers were forced to seek alternatives means of transport to their hotels and rental homes, leaving some stranded late at night when their flights arrived after buses stopped running.

The strike came to an end after the Junta de Andalucia agreed a series of temporary proposals to control numbers. Union leaders explained they want the ratio of private hire cabs to taxis to reach 1:30, a figure the Junta described as “impossible.”

tained were held over their alleged role in attacking Eduardo Martin, president of the VTC (private hire licence) association, who claimed he was attacked by taxi drivers at

Malaga Airport where he was giving a television interview about the strike. According to media reports, one of the five is considered to be the main insitigator of the attack,

while the other four are suspected to have joined in. According to media reports, among those arrested, several supposedly already hold criminal records.

THE Malaga representative for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party claimed that the province has been more affected by the driving examiner’s strike than any other region in Andalusia, with nearly 4000 tests cancelled since June.

A SPECIALIST company is proposing that it should be allowed to develop a nature reserve in the Princesa Sofia Park in La Linea which would include a wildlife area.

Corpse found on mountain

by Jemima Roberts THE BODY of a missing 69-year-old man has been found in Benalmadena.

Jose Romero Benitez had been missing since leaving his home on the morning of September 17. According to his family he had been taking medication for depression before finally being found dead on Mount Calamorro.

The grisly find is the fourth of its kind on the Costa del Sol this year after Guardia Civil officers unearthed two dismembered corpses in the countryside in Arenas and Mijas in August.

Agents are looking at lists of missing people from the last several years to try to identify the bodies, which were found on the same day in two different towns. Police believe the corpses were dismembered after death by animals and explain they do not show any signs of violence prior to dying.

A worker found the first body in Mijas after noticing bones and alerting the authorities who were able to confirm the skeleton was human and was missing part of its skull. Scientists at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Malaga performed forensic tests on the body, ascertaining the deceased had died at least two or three years before.

Later the same day, a resident in Arenas found a human head, calling the Guardia Civil who sent officers to find the rest of the remains, which had been broken apart by animals. An autopsy at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Malaga was performed, finding the man had not been dead long, due to his state of decomposition.

An investigation showed the bodies had not been subject to any violence and there was no

In June it was reported officers from the Civil Protection Service were investigating whether the death of a 70-year-old Norwegian man found in the woods in Mijas who

was killed by multiple bee stings caused by negligent beekeeping.

The man’s body was found by a female dog walker a day after he went missing. He was said to be wearing a t-shirt and shorts, and was found with his top covering his head and multiple bee stings to his body.

Investigators are not sure why the man was stung but say it is certain he walked past a hive, was stung, tried to flee but died about 400 metres down the path.

Pathologists said they cannot be certain whether the man suffered from an allergy but say he was stung enough times that a lethal amount of apitoxin entered his blood stream, prompting anaphylactic shock.

A WOMAN in La Linea has been arrested for reporting that she had been attacked and her purse containing €250 was stolen when in fact she had lost the purse and wanted to make an insurance claim.

THE ANDALUCIA COMMISSION FOR GUARANTEEING DEMOCRACY is investigating two Benalmadena councillors for taking bribes.

The Podemos party is looking into whether its own councillors Enrique Garcia and Juan Ramon took bribes from the governing council team while in opposition. It has been claimed the politicians took the sums in exchange for backing council policies between June 2015 and May 2016. The commission explained it believes “very serious infractions” could have occurred.

Garcia and Ramon last year eventually entered into coalition with councillors expelled from party Ciudadanos and the PSOE party, giving Mayor Victor Navas an outright majority. If the two councillors are now expelled from their party the coalition could come unstuck, however.

The investigation is considering whether Garcia signed “a pact with the PSOE and always doing whatever the mayor wanted,” as well as “having refused to oppose,” the mayor.

The three councillors who were expelled from the Ciudadanos party have joined new group, Contigo.

Bernardo Jimenez, Oscar Ramundo and Beatriz Olmedo, were removed from their original party after coming to an agreement with left-leaning

COALITION: Council accused of bribing opposition councillors PSOE, “signing a covert pact.” They have now joined the new party, which is an offshoot of Contigo Somos Democracia (CSD).

According to media reports, the three have already held their first few meetings as Contgio and begun promoting the party on social media.

The group say their policies will be centrist and are gearing up for the next municipal elections in two years’ time with the aim of taking votes from Ciudadanos. They are also preparing to hold their

first national conference in Granada in October.

Since being expelled, the councillors have held council roles in urban planning, personnel and mobility, while Bernardo Jimenez is Contigo’s new spokesman.

Massive cocaine stash discovered

by Pippa Harris POLICE are investigating a company in Malaga after finding 1,109 kilos of cocaine hidden in cargo containers.

The drugs, which have now been seized, were discovered concealed among an order of plasterboard panels being shipped from Colombia to the Malaga-based construction company.

The tax office, National Police, German customs office and Spanish branch of the American Drug Enforcement Administration began working together in August thanks to a tip off about an international crime organisation.

Their investigations led them to the construction company, whose headquarters are in Seville, and the discovery of the

shipment.

Spanish police have been cracking down on drug trafficking across the Costa del Sol. In August the leader of Estonia’s largest drug trafficking gang in Russia was arrested in Mijas following a joint operation between Spanish and Estonian police.

Three members of the criminal network, named Kemerovo, which operated out of Estonia, were also arrested in Tallinn, under operation Fulcrum-Carinatus.

The Estonian authorities began investigating the gang more than two years ago but stepped up their work after the leader of the Russian criminal world in Estonia was assassinated by an accountant in September 2016, sparking a violent turf war.

ficers searched the man’s house and found accounting documents, hidden cash, computers, an axe and a large knife hidden under his pillow.

The organisation’s other leaders, which include the group’s chief lieutenant, a martial arts expert who recruited “soldiers” to the gang, were arrested in Tallinn. Ten of the “soldiers” have been arrested over the last year and various computers have been seized from their homes.

International Day Against Domestic Abuse

by Jemima Roberts MARBELLA COUNCIL has put together a programme of activities to honour International Day Against Domestic Abuse.

Isabel Cintado, Councillor for Social Rights, explained the council would organise workshops throughout primary schools in Marbella and San Pedro Alcantara teaching about gender violence. She added sex education workshops would also be put on for secondary school students as well as a poster competition designed to promote equality.

The contest, entitled International Forum of Equality and Tourism in Marbella will raise awareness around equality.

Meanwhile, Mijas Council has also been putting together a series of events to prevent gender or homophobic violence in the municipality.

The council started last month with a scheme to prevent gender abuse among foreign residents. The initiative has seen members of the Red Cross, National Police, Guardia Civil, Local Police, La Cala Lions Club and Soroptimist International join forces with the council to combat the problem.

Roy Perez, Councillor for Foreigners, explained the scheme would, “respond to and create a protocol of action in cases of gender violence among the foreign population,” adding 40 per cent of the population was made up by foreign residents. He commented, “it is really important to put out information in several languages to help us remove language barriers and fight this social scourge which does not discriminate between nationalities.”

Councillor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona, added, “these meetings go one step further in facilitating communication between

the council and foreign residents when there are cases of domestic abuse.” She explained the meeting had discussed helping women by providing food stamps of care packages. She commented, “we are here to help women who are going through this situation and protect victims when they take the first step of reporting the incident so

they feel looked after by the council and the community.”

Last month the council also held its first diversity conference to support the LGTBI community. The event, which aimed to “move forward in terms of diversity,” brought together groups from across the province and Andalucia to learn how public bodies should deal with

LGTBI people.

Mari Carmen Carmona, Councillor for Equality, explained, “the main objective of the department is to draw attention to those people who suffer hate crimes because they have a different sexual orientation or because they were born with a gender that does not belong to them.”

SPLENDID SIGHT: The New Bridge is one of Ronda’s top attractions

by Staff Reporter RONDA Town Council will block off the road around the New Bridge to traffic for a month and a half to repair structural damages.

From Monday November 6, traffic will no longer be permitted to drive across the New Bridge so that local authorities can repair the sinkholes that appeared follow-

ing recent spells of heavy rain. Improvements will also be made to the sanitation system and the area will be made waterproof to help prevent this kind of wear and tear in the future.

The renovations are estimated to go on for around 40 days, but the council has promised that it will make sure the work is finished as quickly as possible. The proj-

ect has been estimated to cost around €100,000 to complete.

The council has also warned that parking will not be allowed in the surrounding areas during this time and that some bus services will be slightly affected, as not even emergency services vehicles will be allowed to cross the bridge while it is under repair.

Fire station finally handed back to Mijas

by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA COUNCIL has handed a fire station it had been using back to Mijas following prolonged negotiations.

Mijas Council has called the move a “new victory,” after it was given back after more than 20 years. The town’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, explained, "it was our intention from when we first arrived at the town Hall to unlock this situation and recover this site; the same policy we have followed about the Hippodrome, which we have also seen returned to the people of Mijas, adding around €30 million in value.”

He added, "I would like to thank the mayor, Ana Mula, for this final meeting point that has allowed the people of Mijas to recover this outstanding enclave at the entrance of the road to Las Lagunas.”

The keys to the €2 million building were officialy handed over to Mijas Council, which is now deciding what to do with the space since the area already has another fire station. Councillors now say they not want the building to be used for “social and cultural” purposes.

Francisco Martniez, a local politician, said "the council will evaluate whether the building can be immediately used for residents of needs works. Meanwhile, the council team is studying options to use the site for a sociocultural building which would meet the demands by associations and groups in Las Lagunas as well as providing space for shows of the Peña Flamenca El Gallo.”

The 762 square metre building, located on the border of Fuengirola and Mijas, could offer ample space for leisure activities, according to Mijas’ Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado.

He explained, "one of our main goals today is to get residents involved, not only through debate forums such as the social council, but also through the physical spaces provided for locals so they can carry out work locally through associations and groups.”

Fuengirola Council has said it will hand over the fire station it had been using to Mijas Council within the month following protracted legal wrangling. Mijas’ Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, commented, "the station is set to return to the arms of Mijas, which it should never have left.”

The dispute looked set to reach eviction proceedings until Ana Mula, Fuengirola’s Mayor, wrote to her Mijas counterpart, Juan Carlos Maldonado, saying her council would vacate the building, which is located in Mijas.

Fuengirola’s firefighters had been using the building for several years but have since built one within their own municipality, prompting Mijas Council to ask for the site

back, even resorting to legal threats. According to media reports, Mijas’ request “was denied by former mayor and now Partido Popular member, Esperanza Oña, and by the current mayor, Ana Mula.”

Fuengirola Council took the issue to court, requesting the building be gifted as payment for €4.5 million worth of services its says have been provided by its firemen. The court sided with Mijas Council, stating nothing was owed to Fuengirola Council and it did not make sense for Fuengirola’s firefighters to remain in a building not belonging to the council.

Mijas Council says it made numerous written and verbal requests to Ana Mula, asking her to vacate the building, sending a formal

request on September 14, 2016, saying it wanted the building back within a month. A source says the letter went “ignored and unanswered,” prompting Mijas Council to begin eviction proceedings.

Four months later, Ana Mula wrote back saying she would return the building but claiming she and Mayor Maldonado have “different interpretations” of the ruling, since it “does not contain any order imposing the building’s return and does not determine the legal status of the property,” adding the ruling only dealt with a “cost claim” between the two councils.

She finally agreed she would hand back the property on the proviso a document was signed clarifying the agreement.

LOCAL WONDER: The Nerja Caves were rediscovered in 1959 by hunters searching for bats

THE Nerja Foundation has launched a new campaign to help make the Nerja Caves a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On Tuesday, to coincide with the eleventh anniversary that the caves were declared a site of Cultural Interest (BIC), the organisation presented the project 'Nerja Caves: a Giant Poem'.

The 120-metre-long poem stretched out around the Balcony of Europe, and was influenced by the Poetopia organisation’s ‘Giant Poem’ project, in which 150-metre-long poetry reels were placed in the streets and squares of dozens of cities and have so far accumulated to more than 9000 metres of verse across the globe.

It was hoped that the project would help boost the campaign to promote the Nerja Caves to UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

The Nerja Caves are considered one of the region’s top attractions.

They are home to the world’s largest stalagmite at 32 metres high and also contain the first Neanderthal cave paintings to ever be discovered, which are also allegedly some of the oldest drawings in the world sketched by humans.

Changing from “you” to “he or she” sentences (2) In our last lesson we started to look at how we change verbs to refer to “he” or “she”, in other words to put them into the “third person singular” form.

Having established that in all verbs except one we do this by dropping the letter “s” from the end of second person singular (you) form, we can now go back once more to some previous verbs and see how this works in practice.

Let’s look at our original expressions of intention, obligation and need, for example.

Vas a – you are going to Va a – he or she is going to Puedes – you can Puede – he or she can Quieres – you want Quiere – he or she wants Prefieres – you prefer Prefiere – he or she prefers.

You can see clearly from these examples that all that is required is the dropping of the letter “s” to make this change from second to third person, and that is true of

every single verb in Spanish in the present tense with only one exception, as I mentioned, which is the verb SER (to be). This is an irregular verb and changes from eres (you are) to es (he or she is).

I’m now going to state the obvious yet again, because sometimes it is the obvious that we don’t think about! When we are forming a sentence in the third person we are suddenly at liberty to name the subject of the sentence in a way we cannot do with the first and second person.

To explain what I mean in English, a first person sentence can only start with “I” and the second person sentence can only start with “you”. In Spanish, as we know, these words yo and tú are optional extras.

However, when we come to the third person, we can use “he” or “she” or many other possible subjects – my husband, your friend, the teacher, Mr. Smith, that man over there, the person who lives in that house, Mary, Bill, my cat – I think you’re getting the idea.

So, without further ado, let’s see what new sentences we can form – there are of course thousands of them!

Mi marido va a trabajar mañana.

Tu amiga puede pasar cuando quiere.

(Here the verb pasar means “to call in”) El profesor quiere hablar con tu madre.

El señor Smith prefiere comer pescado.

Remember as well we can form our negatives and our questions from these very easily.

Mi marido no va a trabajar mañana.

Tu amiga no puede pasar cuando quiere. ¿El profesor quiere hablar con tu madre? ¿El señor Smith prefiere comer pescado?

Notice in particular the way we would translate these last two sentences. In English they would start with “Does” – “Does the teacher want to speak to your mother?” “Does Mr. Smith prefer to eat fish?” These words such as “do” and “does” when forming questions are called “auxiliary verbs” and only exist in English.

In Spanish they are not needed. When we are forming simple closed (yes/no) question, we simply make a statement sound like a question with our voice and write it with the upside down question mark. In other words, it is as though we were saying: “The teacher wants to speak to your mother?” “Mr. Smith prefers to eat fish?” It is noticeable as well that some Spanish people speak English in this way, translating directly from their own language, which is actually a lot more straightforward anyway!

Pride comes before the fall It remains to be seen how long it takes for much of the world to recover from the NATO West’s catastrophic foreign policies. My primary interest in a truly free press is my looking forward to watching wretched former government ministers squirm as they are grilled by TV presenters who aren’t PR apparatchiks for the political elite.

It seems that in this deceitful world we have good and bad terrorists. Sir Robert Mugabe was another career politician who came up smelling of gold ingots. However, Mugabe is no better at running a country than William Hague is at running Britain’s foreign policy.

Zimbabwe, which until Pigminster’s betrayal boasted a world-class economy, is now destitute. On a par with the Horn of Africa Zimbabweans today starve in what was once the bread basket of the Dark Continent.

Rewind: Zimbabwe is now begging many of the 4,000 European farmers they forcibly evicted to return and reclaim their farms. This move comes fifteen years after the Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwean government seized large swathes of the farmers legitimately acquired and nurtured ranches.

Before 1979 these prosperous farmlands provided a surplus of wealth, food and employment opportunities. The only problem was the influx of Africa’s non-Rhodesians desperate for a slice of the cake. The evictions and slaying of ethnic-European farmers and their families led to an exodus – and famine.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again: I don’t get this obsession with the whole Halloween thing.

My first experience of this weird festival was in Philadelphia in the early seventies, before it was exported on leathery bat wings from America to British shores.

Mini Draculas, wolf men and zombies arrived at the house throughout the evening, demanding treats which were kept in readiness in a bowl by the front door.

However, I never discovered what the consequences would be if candy was not forthcoming.

Regarded as All Saints Day in the Christian calendar, All Hallows Eve is steeped in the pagan belief that the spirits of the dead re-visit the living, and if offerings are not made, then all sorts of dire consequences are forthcoming in the form of extreme bad luck.

Hence trick or treat.

Admittedly there are other interpretations on offer, but the fact remains that its origins are preChristian and a belief that every October 31st, spirits of the dead walk the Earth.

I’m a fun loving sort of bloke and at the risk of sounding stuffy, I don’t see how this sits easy with the church, especially when you consider that October 31st ranks second only in importance to April 30th, or Walpurgisnacht as it is also known, in the Satanist calendar.

Yes but these devil worshippers are just a lot of loonies looking for an excuse to get their kit off and have a party.

The vast majority perhaps, but a frightening personal experience in 1971 brought home to me in no uncertain terms, that a small but influential hardcore

element exists that carries out unholy rites under cover of the generally held belief that Devil worship is just a load of hokum, and merely an excuse to indulge in a bit of harmless fun.

Many young Catalonians are become more and more angry with the President Puigdemont failing to call the vote on democracy, this may endanger his position and his party which would suit Rajoy, on the other hand Rajoy position could also be challenged by the Popular party for failing to take action against Catalonia sooner, is it because of the financial support Spain receives from that Region?

did play his card, and told Catalonia that they now were an Independent Region from Madrid, immediately the Rajoy played his trump card asking his parliament to vote, this they did and as expected they voted to take over the governing of Catalonia, and removing Puigdemont and his government.

Is that the end, now the dust has settled I do hope so, with all my heart, without the hundreds of deaths as the Spanish people over the years have suffered enough, and that the people of Catalonia accept the penalty decision, and direct rule, and don’t take to the street having strikes, and causing disruption.

It was a political football game between Barcelona and Madrid, a game of two halves, I do hope that there will be no extra time when one of the two teams try score again, in the December elections? Now full time it should be called a draw for peace sake, with one man sent off, ex Catalonian President Puigdemont, after a yellow, then a red card, (also the colours of Spain). The man of the match I suppose you could say, was the Prime Minister Rajoy. For me it was a nerve twitching spectacle.

Other questions you need to ask your solicitor to check are if the property has a licence of first occupation, this proves it was inspected once built and has been completed in line with the planning permission, if it is registered with the Town Hall for local rates known as IBI, if there are any charges or mortgages against the property and ask to see copies of the water and electricity bills.

They also advise to be cautious when buying off plan and said: “As a result of the Spanish economic downturn, buying off plan can be risky so make sure that your builder

has a long verifiable history.” Open a bank account as soon as you can as it will help funds and transfers run smoothly, prepare a Spanish will to cover your assets in Spain and consider the tax implications. If you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year, then

legally you will have to become a tax resident and should present annual tax returns to the Hacienda tax office.

WAY back in 1965 a young local priest came up with the idea of a Song Festival to be held in Gibraltar to raise funds for a community centre.

It started off in a small way with local talent and most years, Joe Carseni backed by local singers and musicians was the winner but with the closure of the border with Spain it petered out although he never forgot his excitement when competing In 2007 he revived the concept and extended it to become the Gibraltar International Song Festival(GISF) and it has gone from strength to strength.

THE organisers of what will be the IX Gibraltar International Song Festival which will take place on Saturday June 2, 2018 are calling for entries to be submitted by January 12 next year.

New rules have only recently been announced but entries have already come in from Gibraltar, UK, Spain, Chile and Argentina and last year there were more than 100 entries received from 22 countries with the event being streamed live to Europe, Latin America and via YouTube.

The Gibraltar band Jetstream performing Starlight composed by Stuart Whitwell were the 2017 winners and special guest entertainer was Spanish singing idol Bustamante.

One of the important things about the GISF

Jetstream Gibraltar International Song Festival 2017 winners is that reputations count for nothing, since the panel of judges who select the songs that will feature at the Finals Gala on June 2, do so ‘blind’ without knowing the identity or country of origin of the songwriters.

The prizes on offer are: £4,000 (First

Prize), £2,000 (Second Prize), £1,000 (Third Prize) plus a special award for best interpretation of a song but for many of those participating, the honour of winning far outweighs the value of the prize.

The organisers are encouraging songwriters

to submit their entries which will be judged impartially and on merit alone but as time is relatively short it is important that potential contestants study the rules of entry which can be viewed at www.gibraltarsongfestival.com.

Ricky is Freddie as the show goes on

He has his own kind of magic

By Michael Cano ORIGINALLY a dedicated amateur singer, the Welshman now known as Ricky Lavazza was persuaded to come to the Costa del Sol as a professional and has worked ever since.

His wife laughingly says that he thinks himself an Italian Stallion but in fact he’s a bit of a pussycat who loves performing and entertaining people.

Over the years, he has built up a strong fan base, with a number of ‘ladies of a certain age’ thinking of him as others think of Tom Jones whose numbers he loves to perform.

He’s not a tribute singer but an allround entertainer who puts his own spin on the songs of his favourites which include Michael Bublé, Tom Jones, Freddie Mercury, Robbie

Williams and the ‘King’.

His next solo performance will be at the Moonlight Bar in Benalmadena on Monday November 20 with doors opening at 8pm and the show kicking off at 9pm.

THERE are to be four free concerts by different bands at Que Bowling, Plaza San Rafael 49, Las Lagunas de Mijas organised by Big M Promotions.

All are on succeeding Fridays at 9pm, starting tonight with Los Thunders with their AC/DC tribute.

The following Thursday welcomes Rolling Stones tribute Honky Tonk Cats who play regularly around their home city of Malaga.

Then on November 17 Queen of Magic are booked to appear, a Malaga based band formed in 2015 who regularly play along the Cost del Sol presenting their tribute to Queen. Finally on Friday November 24 Metal Gods another Malaga band who play heavy rock covers will make their appearance.

If you prefer something a little more melodic, there is also an Abba tribute playing on Sunday November 12.

This is a great opportunity to see spend five great musical evenings in a good sized venue with the added bonus of also enjoying some 10 pin bowling before or after the performances.

A night of cello music FOLLOWING the highly successful Salida del Sol II Festival, Project, Music Management is hosting the Scandinavian Cello School on Sunday November 12.

Starting at 8.30pm at

the Avanto Beachside Restaurant in La Cala de Mijas an ensemble of seven cellos lead by Jacob Shaw will entertain whilst the maximum number of 75 guests can enjoy welcome drinks, canapés

and interval drinks.

The perfect dish for my Dad! beef should be cooked then after cooking for Her Majesty, my feelings changed and hence this dish has been celebrated in my restaurants ever since! Enjoy.

DAUBE OF BEEF, red wine and star anise juices.

You know how it is with beef, everyone wants it cooked in a different way! My father is a typical example of someone who will ruin the best beef I can buy in Spain by ordering it well cooked.

I buy my beef from a small village in Galicia (north-west Spain) where the weather is usually a bit wet and therefore just imagine the lush green grass and the quality of the beef, expensive but amazing!

Christmas is coming and at this time of year my Dad loves to visit me. I hide away the Galician beef and cook him this dish because when fillet of beef is well cooked it can be dry and when featherblade or topside is slow cooked in stock it is the most succulently soft slow cooked beef dish you will ever eat, tender but moist and its dead easy to do!

It can also be prepared in advance which is ideal for a dinner party. Add roasted chestnut puree to make it more seasonal (optional) and you will be hailed God of the kitchen!

The dish originates from Provence where traditionally it was cooked with herbs de provence lots of garlic and a little orange.

There are many variations some not so good but this one is exceptional so cut it out from this paper and use it at some point! Failing that we will have it on the menu in both The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas and in Marbella (Golden Mile).

Regular readers love my little name drops of who I have cooked what for, so here we go! I cooked this dish for Her Majesty The Queen in 2000 in Manchester. Her Majesty (like my dad) likes her meat well cooked.

If there was ever a time that I was a little snooty about how

Daube de boeuf (serves about 6) • 1kg of feather blade of beef(0r Topside .see your butcher) trimmed a little and cut into 250g to 300g pieces • 50g of plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper • 1 litre of red wine, full-bodied • 2 carrots, roughly chopped • 1 onion, roughly chopped • 8 sprigs of fresh thyme • 4 garlic cloves • 200g of button mushrooms • 200g of pancetta, cut into lardons • 1 litre of meat stock • 2 pieces of star anise • 2 oranges (juice) and their zest • 1 tbsp of butter • 2 tbsp of vegetable oil • salt &black pepper to season Garnish Vegetables (to finish dish) • 100g of carrots, turned or cut into small batons • 100g of baby onions • 100g of button mushrooms cut into quarters • 100g of pancetta cut into 1 cm pieces • 1 tbsp of butter • 1 tbsp of vegetable oil 1 Preheat the oven to 150°C 2 Season the beef with salt and pepper and dust with the seasoned flour to coat it well 3 Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over a medium heat.

Gently sear the beef for a couple of minutes on each side until golden 4 Remove the beef from the frying pan and set aside in a warm place.

5 Put a deep saucepan over a medium heat and add 1/2 tablespoon of oil and 1/2 tablespoon of butter. Once hot, add the roughly chopped carrots, onions, garlic and thyme and

cook to colour 6 Add the flour covered beef chunks and then add the red wine and all other ingredients including the stock but excluding the garnish vegetables.

7 Bring to a simmer on the stove. Cover with a lid and place in the oven for 15 mins and then turn down the oven to 120c and simmer for 3 hours 8 Once the beef is soft and juicy (test it) remove the meat and carefully pass the cooking liquid through a sieve into a clean saucepan. Boil on a high heat until reduced by half or until the sauce has a smooth, silky consistency 9 To serve, heat half the garnish oil and butter in a pan over a medium heat and cook the turned carrots and baby onions etc for a few minutes until soft 10 In a separate pan, heat the remaining oil and butter and fry the pancetta and button mushrooms for 2 minutes. Add to the cooked vegetables (9) and carefully drain any excess liquid from the pan.

11 Put the cooked pancetta, mushroom and vegetable mix around the pieces of beef. Pour over the reduced red wine sauce. Serve immediately with creamy mashed potatoes or any seasonal vegetable puree www.thelittlegeranium.com

Twice baked potatoes

A great side dish for entertaining, these mitt–warming potatoes can be made several hours or even a day in advance. After filling, cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Try a variation with mushrooms and truffle oil or chives.

INGREDIENTS 6 Medium baking potatoes, scrubbed and pierced lightly 1/4 cup Butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup Sour cream, at room temperature 1/4 cup Buttermilk, at room temperature 1 tsp Kosher salt 2 Scallions, green and white parts, minced 3/4 cup Grated cheddar cheese, plus more for garnish 1/4 cup Grated parmesan cheese 1/4 cup Cooked and crumbled bacon, plus more for garnish Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Butter, for dotting the tops DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake the potatoes directly on the oven rack until tender, about 1 – 1 1/4 hours. Cool 15

minutes.

2. Laying the potatoes on their sides, cut off the top 4 and reserve, and gently scoop out the flesh with a spoon, leaving 1/4” thick shells.

3. Force the scooped flesh through a ricer, or mash with a masher in a mixing bowl. Add the remaining ingredients, and gently mix with a fork or a wooden spoon. Taste to adjust the seasonings.

4. Spoon the filling back into the potato skins, and dot with butter.

Replace the cut–off tops and gently wrap with aluminum foil in a way that signals the right–side up. Place on upper rack of a pre–heated barbecue and bake until heated through and beginning to brown, about 30 minutes.

5. If made ahead and refrigerated, bake for 35–40 minutes.

6. To Serve: Open foil, discard tops and garnish with a little extra grated cheddar and crumbled bacon.

SCIATICA is the name given to any sort of pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, running from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet.

The severest pain of sciatica is usually felt in the buttocks and legs, and most people find it goes away naturally within a few weeks, although some cases can last for a year or more.

Symptoms When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, it can cause pain; numbness; a tingling sensation that radiates from your lower back and travels down one of your legs to your foot and toes, and weakness

in the calf muscles or the muscles that move the foot and ankle. The pain can range from being mild to very painful, and may be made worse by sneezing, coughing or sitting for a long period of time.

The fruit of African mango (Gabonensis Irvingia) is native to Western Africa, especially to Cameroon.

What time is it?

The time of day of your surgery could have long-term impacts on your health. That’s according to researchers who looked at the way circadian rhythm - the body’s internal clock - affects the outcomes of a patient recovering from a complex heart procedure.

Patients who underwent open-heart surgery in the afternoon experienced better health outcomes compared to those who were operated on in the morning, study authors found after six years of observing nearly 600 patients who underwent heart valve replacement.

In the subsequent 500 days after surgery, researchers found, those patients who were operated on in the afternoon had half the risk of a major cardiac event - for instance myocardial infarction, acute heart failure, or death - as those who underwent surgery before then.

The team also conducted a randomised controlled trial of 88 different patients who underwent the same surgery, half in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. They found that afternoon surgeries resulted in lower levels of myocardial

ischaemia-reperfusion injury - tissue damage that occurs when blood flows again through the repaired portion of the heart - than did morning surgeries.

Experts say that sort of heart tissue injury can lead to higher risk of short- and long-term mortality.

University of Lille-France professor David Montaigne, the study’s lead author, suggested that the study’s findings indicate that scheduling changes could decrease injury or death.

“There are few other surgical options to reduce the risk of post-surgery heart damage, meaning new techniques to protect patients are needed,” Montaigne said in a statement. “Our findings suggest this is because part of the biological mechanism behind the damage is affected by a person’s circadian clock and the underlying genes that control it.”

The findings are the latest in a growing body of evidence suggesting that time of day plays an important role in how well various medical treatments work. Studies show that the efficacy of some vaccines and cancer treatments may be affected by the time of day when a therapy is administered or medicine is taken. For example, research has found that patients who received a seasonal flu vaccination before 11.00am produced more antibodies than those who received a vaccination after 3.00pm.

Reduce the setting on your central heating, avoid car heaters, especially at face level, and sit away from direct heat such as gas or electric heaters.

Ultimate stain-removal guide Because saving your favourite clothes is always worth the extra elbow grease!

• Dye stains: Fresh dye stains are the easiest to remove but very hard to get out once they've set in. If possible, right when the stain happens, run it under cold water and then wash it on the hottest possible setting for the fabric. Dye stains are naturally occurring vegetable dyes found in many plants and acidic foods. If you can't get the stain out yourself, try the dry cleaner. These same cleaning methods should work for coffee, tea and ink stains — which are also dye stains.

• Protein stains: Organic in nature, protein stains include things like vomit, sweat and blood. Treat them with alkaline stain removal solutions, which will digest the proteins. Enzyme pre-soak products can break down protein and help dissolve fats. Most detergents contain enzymes and can be used to clean protein stains.

• Combination stains: Combination stains are stains from things like sauces (barbecue sauce, ketchup, hot sauce), makeup (lipstick, foundation, eye shadow) and crayons. They are a

combination of the other types of stains. First, rinse off any excess from the stain with cold water.

Gently rub a detergent into the stain. Rinse out the detergent, apply a stain stick and wash.

• Ice cream and other dairy product stains: Dairy stains are protein stains because they are organic in nature (i.e., from an animal). Fresh stains should be soaked and agitated in cold water before washing. If the

stain has dried, scrape or brush off any crusted matter. Soak for up to several hours in cold water with a detergent or an enzyme pre-soak (which breaks down protein-based stains like egg, grass and blood so your detergent can work more effectively). Wash in warm water.

If the stain remains, soak for an additional 30 minutes and rewash.

If a coloured stain remains, launder with a bleach safe for the fabric.

• Fruit and fruit juice stains: Fruit stains are a dye stain. Launder with detergent in the hottest water safe for the fabric.

Do not use soap (bar, flake or detergents containing natural soap) since soap-based products could make the stain permanent. Soak tough stains for 30 minutes in 1 litre of warm water and 1 teaspoon of enzyme pre-soak product.

Removal of old or set stains may require washing with bleach that

is safe for that particular fabric. If all the sugars are not removed, a brown stain will appear when the cloth is heated in the dryer or is ironed as the sugar is caramelized.

This effect is great for crème brûlée... not so wonderful for your favourite white blouse.

• Coffee stains: A coffee stain is a dye stain, but the cream or milk in the coffee is a protein. Therefore, you will want to treat the stain as both if you like a little cream in your morning brew. If the stain is fresh, immediately rinse with cold water. If you are at home (or once at home), remove the clothing and add laundry detergent directly to the stain and rub the cloth together with cold water. Soak in the water for 30 minutes, rubbing the cloth together every five to 10 minutes.

Next, wash clothing on the hottest setting. Ensure the stain is out of the clothing prior to placing in the dryer. If the stain has not been removed, try repeating the steps.

For older stains, apply white vinegar directly to the stain and mix with cold water. Rub stain with a sponge until removed. You may also use baking soda as an alternative solution, applying with a wet cloth to scrub away the stain.

2. STOP heading straight for harsh cleaning products.

Most jobs require nothing more than gentle, pH-neutral cleaners, which are not only safer for you and your family; they’re easier on your home’s furnishings, fixtures, and finishes. When you must break out the big guns, know that a little goes a long way. When you use bleach, things don’t need to smell of it to be clean.

3. STOP using too much cleaning product.

More doesn’t directly translate to better. Use only the amount of cleaning product required to do the job, otherwise you just waste time wiping up the excess. You’re also wasting the product and therefore money in the process.

4. STOP washing your cabinets each time you clean Cleaning them too often can wear the finish down and cause them to swell, as moisture penetrates the surface. Spot cleaning does the trick, plus it’s faster and easier.

5. STOP dusting last Always dust before tackling the floors. Start at the top of the room, and work your way down and around. That way, your final vacuum or mop will take care of any remaining debris

you’ve knocked to the ground.

6. STOP trying to multitask Doing two things at once may make you feel like you’re getting more done, but you’re only prolonging the cleaning process. Some cats may tear chair arms with their claws, scratch patches of wallpaper off the wall or shred carpets. Most cats do not cause this type of damage, so why do others feel the need to behave like this in our homes?

Scratching also leaves scent marks in a territory. Secretions of watery sweat from between the cat’s pads leave a scent message in addition to the physical marks.

Wood is just the right texture to allow claws to dig in and be drawn down, pulling off the old claw sheath to reveal the sharp point of the new one.

Rabbit and guinea pig winter survival guide Wintertime can be lots of fun for all the family but only if you’re prepared for the hazards that come with it. Read our advice to help keep your rabbit and/ or guinea pig warm, happy and safe from danger during the cold spell…

• Hutches should be positioned so that wind, rain, snow or sleet can’t blow in. If the weather’s particularly bad, move the hutch into an unused garage or shed if it’s possible. For guinea pigs, it’s better to keep them inside in winter, in a conservatory or unused garage.

• If your pets need to stay outside, help keep them snug as a bug in their hutch by covering the front with an old blanket or sacking and adding extra bedding. Don’t forget you need to change their bedding regularly.

• Check their water bottle regularly because the little ball freezes easily. Press the ball every few hours to keep it moving – you can get specially made bottle covers but you’ll still need to do regular checks.

• Your pet still needs to have access to their run during the day so they can get their regular exercise.

• Cold pets need more calories to keep warm so give them lots of good quality hay to nibble on. the little pieces that fall off. It may have the additional benefit that the owners suddenly start to take notice and give the cat attention, albeit angry attention.

Communication with other cats Some cats will scratch more when in the presence of other cats. Exactly what they are trying to convey is not well understood, but this type of scratching may be done as a display and to leave a scent mark to communicate with other cats in the vicinity.

Increasing their feeling of security When cats feel vulnerable, they will try to rub their own scent on prominent places in a room to feel more secure.

While they may not resort to spraying (using urine as a scent mark), they may use the scents produced by scratching to do this instead. If the cat is trying to increase feelings of security, many surfaces may be scratched, particularly those in strategic places such as edges of chairs which are nearest to doorways.

Royal Decree amends Spanish MOT rules THE council of ministers have approved a Royal Decree that amends certain requirements and regulations in respect of the Spanish MOT (ITV).

Until now, if a vehicle failed an inspection it was mandatory to return to the same inspection station for the second test within a maximum period of one month. The new regulation now permits the vehicles to be taken to a different station but within the same time scale of one month.

For those vehicles that pass the ITV test, the mandatory date for the next revision will not be changed if the vehicle passes the inspection in advance, provided it’s not more than one month in advance.

That means that, for example, if the ITV expires on a vehicle in January 2018 and you pass the test in December 2017, the next date will be January 2019. If you were to take the same vehicle in November 2017,

The Royal Decree also forces all ITV stations to have the correct di-

agnostic tools that connect with the on-board computers that many vehicles approaching their first

Well not really! Friday saw a visit to Miraflores by Potters Leisure who operate the largest bowls facility in UK. World No. 1 Greg Harlow led a large group of people from all over the country who were visiting Malaga as part of a bowling/cruising holiday. Sadly, their plans were disrupted by “Storm Brian” resulting in them hiding in a French port for 2 days and changing their itinerary.

They had been due to play 3 matches in Spain but all were cancelled with only Miraflores able to accommodate the change of date. As the only facility on the Costa del Sol with

2 greens we entertained 10 rinks of bowlers for the whole day with a break for lunch which went some way to lessening their disappointment the feedback at the end of the day was that all had enjoyed a fabulous day in unseasonably hot weather.

The largest open bowls competition on the coast the “Miraflores Open” will be starting on Saturday 11th November. There will be events in three disciplines namely Mixed Triples, Mixed Pairs and Open Fours. We are delighted to have 2 major sponsors in place, Ibex Insurance and Currencies Direct who will

England’s teenagers stormed back from 2-0 down to beat Spain 5-2 to win the World U17 championship in Kolkata before the largest-ever crowd for a football match in India: 79,395. This is the first time England has won two World titles in the same year, having lifted the U20 trophy in June.

Andrea Dovizioso won the Malaysian MotoGP ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, Johann Zarco and Marc Marquez. The latter is 21 points clear of Dovizioso and is favourite to win his fourth world title in Valencia this Sunday. Chelsea (4th) won 1-0 at Bournemouth; Arsenal (5th) beat Swansea 2-1; Liverpool (6th) conquered Huddersfield 3-0; Crystal Palace (bottom) drew 2-2 with West Ham and Leicester (under new manager Claude Puel) beat Everton 2-0.

Sheffield United (2-1 winners at Leeds) top the Championship, Shrewsbury and Notts County lead Leagues 1 and 2; Celtic are now unbeaten in 62 domestic games and Barcelona are eight points better off than Real Madrid in La Liga.
