Norwegian Airline is causing some consternation.

It is not unusual for airlines to withdraw or curtail certain services to areas which are popular sunshine tourist des-

tinations, but this is normally done with plenty of advance warning, whilst Norwegian literally withdrew the flights with just a few days notice.

Domestic abuse tackled

by Jemima Roberts MIJAS COUNCIL has launched a scheme to prevent gender abuse among foreign residents.

The initiative has seen members of the Red Cross, National Police, Guardia Civil, Local Police, La Cala Lions Club and Soroptimist International join forces with the council to combat the problem.

Roy Perez, Councillor for Foreigners, explained the scheme would, “respond to and create a protocol of action in cases of gender violence among the foreign population,” adding 40 per cent of the population was made up by foreign residents. He commented, “it is really important to put out information in several languages to help us remove language barriers and fight this social scourge which does not discriminate between nationalities.”

Councillor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona, added, “these meetings go one step further in facilitating communication between the council and foreign residents when there are cases of domestic abuse.”

She explained the meeting had discussed helping women by providing food stamps of care packages. She commented, “we are here to help women who are going through this situation and protect victims when they take the first step of reporting the incident so they feel looked after

The initiative is part of a series of schemes by Mijas Council to reduce levels of violence and inequality in the municipality after it last month held its first diversity conference to support the LGTBI community.

The event, which aimed to “move forward in terms of diversity,” brought together groups from across the province and Andalucia to learn how public bodies should deal with LGTBI people.

Mari Carmen Carmona, Councillor for Equality, explained, “the main objective of the department is to draw attention to those people who suffer hate crimes because they have a different sexual orientation or because they were born with a gender that does not belong to them.”

The same council also organised an event to teach local police about dealing with hate crimes. The course was designed to “improve the knowledge and treatment of people who suffer from these types of crimes and teach the state security forces how to deal with them,” according to the council.

The mayor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona explained the initiative, which is particularly aimed at crimes against the LGTBIQ community, was created in collaboration with the Andalucian Rainbow Federation, whose president, Gonzalo Serrano, was in charge of teaching

Mijas Council also aims to create a database revealing the statistics of hate crimes in the municipality. Councillor Carmona explained, “we want to know how to act in every situation and for that we need to know how many cases we have in Mijas, and thus improve.”

by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA COUNCIL is encouraging residents to put forward their suggestions for what they want EU funding to be used for.

The town is applying for up to €10 million of funds for its Urban Development Strategy and has asked locals what improvements they would like to see around Fuengirola.

A questionnaire is available on the town hall’s website at www.furngirola.org which is taking suggestions. The council is looking for specific ideas surrounding finding more intelligent and transparent management solutions for local bodies, sustainable urban mobility, energy efficiency, improving deteriorated areas and cultural heritage and reaching out to vulnerable groups.

Fuengirola’s Mayor, Ana Mula, has spoken about the scheme alongside Isabel Gonzalez, Councillor for New Technologies, saying, "I have always said that the way I manage is by including the people of Fuengirola. In fact whenever I do anything I always make the point that our residents are my best team because the important cooperation of locals is the best source of ideas to develop projects and it is residents who can best help us de-

cide what is best for our town.”

She added, “so we are once again reaching out to the people of Fuengirola to ask them to participate and collaborate in a survey put together by the council.” She explained the answers received would help to inform the Urban Development Strategy which in turn will be used to seek EU funding. She commented, "this funding could be worth up to €10 million and we think it is worthwhile that we work together… for this I need your information, collaboration, participation ... we will ask about various subjects so that you can say what you believe is needed.”

The online questionnaire will assess the problems, resources, challenges and potential of Fuengirola and form an initial diagnosis of the city’s issues. Through a series of surveys residents will be able to give their opinions and ideas, explaining what advantages and problems they think exist, as well as commenting on any strengths and areas for improvement.”

Participants will be asked to identify issues surrounding tourism, mobility, culture, training, employment. A total of five questionnaires will be published online and will be open to responses until May.

Not so mobile THREE people have been arrested in Marbella after allegedly being involved in several crimes of violent robbery. A 19-year-old man has been arrested alongside two minors aged 16 and 17 for allegedly stealing six mobile phones.

The plot thickens WITNESSES CLAIM that a man who disappeared from Benalmadena more than a month ago had breakfast in the headquarters of a Malaga charity organisation on Thursday.

Jose Romero Benitez, aged 64, went missing from his home in Benalmadena more than a month ago. Police scrapped search efforts following a manhunt that lasted nearly a week and involved more than 500 people.

However, several volunteers from the ‘Angeles Malagueños de la Noche’ organization claim that Mr Romero had breakfast on their premises in Malaga capital and seemed “disorientated” but otherwise well.

The police tried to locate him the following day without success, and were not convinced that the man who appeared in the charity shop was in fact Jose Romero. However, his family showed the staff photos of their missing relative who confirmed that it was definitely him.

Mr Romero reportedly left his house on September 17 without money or credit cards. His car was found at a local petrol station and authorities searched the area for six days before giving up hope.

Machete killer faces 22 years in prison

by Jemima Roberts A 63-YEAR-OLD man faces 22 years in prison for allegedly killing a 74-year-old with a machete in Torremolinos.

The accused is standing trial for murder and possession of an illegal weapon after supposedly killing his victim in February 2016.

The victim died of hypovolemic shock after being stabbed 16 times in the head, neck, chest, stomach and back The accused, who has not denied the allegation, supposedly “surprised” his victim at his home in Torremolinos before killing him. The suspect allegedly waited on the doorstep next to his victim’s body before telling police officers, “he did not keep my secret.” It is not known what secret the man is referring to.

Police believe the suspect killed the deceased, who was believed to have

been his friend, in a “repeated and surprise” stabbing to the man’s head, neck, thorax, abdomen and back. When asked by police why he was carrying the 25 centimetre long machete, the man supposedly said he always had it on him.

Witnesses say they saw the accused “loitering” outside the victim’s house on Calle Boscon before stabbing him. One driver honked his horn at the attacker several times to get his attention before giving up and calling the police. Prosecutors now claim the suspect went to his former friend’s house “with the evident purpose of causing him death.”

CCTV footage allegedly shows the accused trying to remove the machete from his victim’s body, sustaining a cut to a finger on his right hand which required surgery. Prosecutors are now seeking €150,000 in compensation for the victim’s daughter in addition to jail time.

SMASHED: Indoor cannabis plantations dismantled and 13.3Kilos seized

by Staff Reporter THE Guardia Civil, in association with the Belgian authorities, have dismantled a Belgian criminal organisation ‘dedicated to the cultivation of marihuana’ In total, 10 people of Belgian, Spanish and French nationalities, including the alleged head of the organisation, have been arrested.

The head of the organisation, of Belgian origin, has been detained in Mijas following a move to the province of Malaga due to fleeing the authorities of his native Belgium.

According to sources, the Belgian authorities had informed the Guardia Civil that a well-known delinquent had fled the country

and could possibly have settled in the province of Malaga.

After several weeks of investigating, the individual was located in an urbanisation in Mijas.

Once the ringleader was located and detained, the Belgian authorities proceeded to arrest the remaining members of the criminal network in Belgium.

Three “indoor” marihuana plantations have been dismantled, with 13.3 kilos of the drug, along with €230,000 in cash, 3 vehicles and 3 firearms have been seized.

The man has been placed at the disposal of the Central Court of Guard Instruction of Madrid, which will decide on his repatriation to Belgium to be tried for the crimes committed there.

THE City of Torremolinos has extended the deadline to pay the receipt of the Tax on Real Estate (IBI) for those who applied for a municipal grant. The deadline will now be April 2018.

THE BRITISH CONSULATE and the University of Birmingham launched a new website for older and more vulnerable foreign residents with useful information on how to get extra support and help last Wednesday.

At the well-attended event there were over 60 people from the different charities and voluntary groups that provide unstinting support for British nationals who are resident in Spain as well as those of other nationalities.

The launch was held in the district council offices in La Cala de Mijas and was led by British Consul - Andalucía, Charmaine Arbouin and Dr Kelly Hall of the University of Birmingham.

It was also an important opportunity for those present to hear about the latest news from the British Consulate in Malaga and network with other people working with older and more vulnerable people in southern Spain.

The project, called Support in Spain, is the result of a close cooperation between the British Consulate in Malaga and the School of Social Policy at the University. The project set out to research the issues older and vulnerable British people face while living in Spain and to suggest possible solutions to help prevent them becoming socially isolated in the future.

One of the conclusions of the study was the need to develop a website that includes all the contact information of the different voluntary groups and Spanish statutory authorities

Dr Kelly Hall, Neil Hesketh (Project Coordinator), Roy Perez (Mijas Council) and Charmaine Arbouin available, as well as helpful advice on common questions, such as how to secure extra social care, help for a disability or assistance with paperwork in Spanish.

Dr Kelly Hall of the University of Birmingham, who led the project, said: “Our research showed that many people on the Costa del Sol are facing the need to secure support and welfare as they get older while coping with limited finances and little understanding of the Spanish social security system.”

Kelly continued: “This website helps put all the information in one

place and we can add to it and expand its coverage over time. We hope that everyone can use it, including even friends and family back in the UK and the charities working in Spain.

“We also wanted to publish the website in Spanish as well as English so that doctors, social workers and people’s Spanish-speaking neighbours can access information on English-speaking assistance for their patients or friends for the first time.”

Charmaine Arbouin, British Consul - Andalucía said: “It is exciting to see this project come to fruition. The challenge of an ageing population is

as relevant to Britons living in Spain as it is to those back in the United Kingdom, although there is not always as much access to information here in Spain.

I recognise the incredible work done by so many volunteers across southern Spain to support foreign residents who are in need and I hope that this website is a useful support tool for them in their work.”

Charmaine continued: “Our message from the British Consulate in Malaga to UK residents is clear: Plan ahead for the future as you get older and know what you will do if something unexpected happens, for example when you lose a partner. Anyone can become vulnerable at any time and it is better to be prepared.”

Representatives of the groups attending the event were very interested in the website and also in meeting colleagues from different local charitable organisations.

There was lively discussion and debate on the challenges of an ageing population and what people can do to help themselves, such as the need for all UK residents, whatever their age, to stay registered on the local town hall ‘padron’ register in order to access benefits in the future.

The project was funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

High speed chase ends in arrests

A HIGH speed chase in the waters off of Gibraltar resulted in the arrest of two local men and the seizure of a Spanish registered semi-rigid inflatable speed boat.

The operation was undertaken by officers from the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) Marine Section and HM Customs after both were alerted on Wednesday that the vessel had been spotted off the east side of the Rock in Gibraltar Territorial Waters.

Working together, the two enforcement departments started the chase and eventu-

ally stopped the speed boat off of Rosia Bay arresting two 26-year-old men who have been charged with operating and importing a prohibited item.

Good teamwork resulted in the satisfactory conclusion to the chase and the two local men have now been released on police bail.

New research may help children in Spain

by Staff Reporter BUTTERFLY SKIN (Epidermolysis bullosa) is a rare and incurable condition characterised by extremely fragile skin up until the point that even a simple hug or daily activities like walking and eating can cause blisters and wounds.

Little is known about the cause or treatment of the disease but a decision made by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, La Paz University Hospital, Madrid, Sant Joan de Déu-Clinic Hospital, Barcelona in collaboration with the Provincial Hospital Clinic of Barcelona will introduce first Reference Centres for Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) in Spain.

A Reference Centre is a health centre that ded-

icates its work fundamentally to the care of certain recognised conditions and has the mission of providing multidisciplinary team care.

This news is a breakthrough for all those affected with Butterfly Skin in Spain, and was revealed at an official ceremony at the La Paz Children's Hospital, Madrid.

The presentation took place in the meeting Room of La Paz Children’s Hospital, Madrid where Dr Raul de Lucas, Head of the La Paz Paediatric Dermatology department and Head of the Reference Centre explained the characteristics of the condition, the current situation and the ongoing research taking place at the Institute of Investigation (IDIPAZ).

De Lucas believes that “it is fundamental that the patients receive multidisciplinary support and that it is done in close collaboration with

the Debra-Butterfly Children Charity.”

Nieves Montero, herself a resident of Marbella is President of the Spanish Association of EB Debra-Butterfly Children Charity and was delighted to attend the ceremony.

Attending alongside a number of medical professionals, was Princess Elena of Spain, project Director of the Mapfre Foundation which has been collaborating with the charity via the ‘Donate a Euro’ campaign involving more than 4,600 employees of Mapfre.

It is believed that the establishment of these reference centres will not only help to highlight the needs of the children so badly affected but will also lead in the long term to an extension of knowledge in how to treat the condition and bring some relief to those who suffer from its debilitating effects.

Licence to print money MARBELLA’S COUNCIL has granted 685 trading licences to market stall owners around the municipality.

The move is designed to offer, “legal security” to the traders, according to Jose Eduardo Diaz, Councillor for Commerce. He added the licences will also allow the council to organise the various market places better.

Councillor Diaz explained an investment of €60,000 would be made to put Marbella on the gastronomic map, by improving the Divina Pastora market with repairs to its ceiling and loading and unloading area. He added other markets would be cleaned and have paving replaced.

In addition, the council will now hold monthly meetings with traders to discuss any issues they want to raise.

The project comes after councils on the Costa del Sol have been trying to find solutions to the problem of illegal traders selling fake goods.

In August it was revealed Benalmadena Council had launched a campaign in collaboration with the Department of Commerce to prevent illegal street vending.

The town’s Mayor, Victor Navas, revealed a series of leaflets in several languages had been distributed in the most heavily visited tourist areas raising awareness of the problem. He explained, “we are aware that illegal

street vending is a social problem and we think it is vital to involve residents and tourists in finding a solution, because illegal vending does not benefit the seller or the buyer.”

Mayor Navas said the council is considering a series of proposals to counteract the practice, including setting up legal markets.

The same month, Malaga Council installed an authorised tobacconist to crack down on the problem of illegal to-

bacco vending. The retailer, located in the Real de la Feria, has attracted large crowds of smokers, although some illegal street vendors continue to trade, according to media reports.

Head of Security at Malaga Council, Mario Cortes, said although not many police officers are brought in to deal with the problem, more measures have been put in place to stop the sale of illegal tobacco this year, leading to 200 packets of cigarettes being confiscated.

Beware the pension scammers THE PENSIONS REGULATOR (TPR) has launched new online messaging urging consumers to keep their eyes and ears open for pension scams.

by TPR via YouTube reminds viewers to watch out for scam sites that dress themselves up with anti-scam messaging to pose as legitimate businesses.

The second focuses on the need to hang up immediately on pension cold callers.

Mike Broomfield, TPR’s Head of Intelligence, said: “Scammers are always developing new ways to try to get their hands on people’s pensions so everyone needs to be on the

lookout for potential traps.

“Calling pension scheme members out of the blue and creating impressive-looking websites to snare potential prey are two methods they use to separate victims from their funds.

“We need consumers to help us find and stop scams. We can all use our eyes and ears to spot the scammers before they can profit at our expense.”

Urgent work to begin on playgrounds

by Pippa Harris MARBELLA COUNCIL is carrying out a series of works to improve the town’s playgrounds after several incidents of vandalism.

The project will see 15 play areas in Marbella, San Pedro and Nueva Andalucia upgraded after “neglect over the last two years,” according to Javier Garcia, Councillor for Parks and Gardens.

Councillor Garcia added once the works are complete, the playgrounds will “comply with the current safety regulation. For this new accessories and parts will be installed to maintain the areas properly.”

The €21,479 project is expected to take around two months and will include cleaning and re-fencing Parque Maria Auxiliadora, Centro Marbella and Parque Antonio Lizarza.

In San Pero, flooring will be replaced in Las Granjas and Marioano Diaz parks, while a swing will be replaced in Parque Fuente Nueva. In Nueva Andalucia a swing will be replaced in Parque Colonia El Angel.

The move comes after the council said it would clean up 34 playgrounds earlier this month. Councillor for Cleaning, Diego Lopez, explained, “we are cleaning with nonharmful disinfectants and pressure hoses,” adding the project,” we intend to carry out the work regularly,” and explained, “over the last two years they had not been properly cleaned which poses a risk to the children using them.”

Last month, alleged poor conditions at a playground in Torremolinos prompted outrage from locals after three people

were injured when a swing collapsed in La Bateria Park.

Two girls and one woman were hurt in the

incident, which left one of the girls in hospital with two leg injuries, while the other girl, aged 5, was treated for back pain. Her mother was hit on the arm as she tried to stop the structure falling on the children and is now unable to move three of her fingers.

The woman explained, “it was a good thing I had instinctively put my arm up because the bar went directly towards the girls’ head.”

The girl’s mother says she is considering denouncing the town hall, claiming the set “was rotten inside”, adding, “after it came down we could see the condition of it and it is a shame. If I had known before I would not have taken my daughter to the park.”

The council, however, claim the swing came down “because ten children were on it at the same time,” something which the mother denies, saying, “there were only four children on the attraction, it seems outrageous that they want blame them.”

A trampoline was also sealed off by police, leaving the condition of several children’s parks up for debate at the council’s next meeting amid claims of splinters, rust and uneven ground. Margarita del Cid, a spokeswoman for the Partido Popular (PP), said the “the deterioration of the parks” and says her party will ask “again a comprehensive review of all elements” of the facilities.

She claimed municipal workers “have on many occasions asked for tools to carry out the necessary work to keep the parks in perfect condition but have not received a reply.”

Having a blast FUENGIROLA COUNCIL has begun works to blast and clean the areas surrounding trees in the neighbourhood of San Cayetano.

Pedro Vega, Councillor for Cleaning, explained the works began to other areas around Fuengirola municipality in June, including Los Boliches, the neighborhood Los Marineros, Miramar, Camino Coin, El Boquetillo and Los Pacos.

He commented, "Today we are in the neighbourhood of San Cayetano where work has been done to improve, clean and treat these areas. Specifically, we are applying a special treatment of granules which will clean and improve the look of tree surrounds around 2,000 other areas in Fuengirola. The work was carried out by cleaning and urban waste collection company Urbaser.” He went on, “in view of the good results achieved through this initiative, we thought it would be interesting to launch it across other areas of the municipality where it has never been carries out before. These works took place over a month in Los Boliches and El Boquetillo, where more than 520 were cleaned and treated, as well as in Calles Benahavís, León, Navarra, Periana and others. This project cost around €21,000.”

He concluded, "this work offers another advantage by levelling the area around trees which improves safety for pedestrians, preventing trips and

falls.” Councillor Vega explained the work does not damage any of the area’s trees or harm their irrigation systems, commenting, "the trees will not suffer at all and in addition we are aesthetically improve all areas. It's a very positive project.”

FUENGIROLA COUNCIL has announced it is running a food handling and allergy awareness course for the unemployed.

Carmen Diaz, Councillor for Promotion and Development, and Ricardo von Wichmann, Councillor for Employment, explained the course will be held on October 30 and 31 with room for 15 students.

The workshop, which will be taught in a classroom of the third floor of the Mayor’s office in Los Boliches, will run from 9am to 2pm each day. The requirements for those wanting to take part are to be registered in Fuengirola and be enrolled on the Municipal Employment Exchange.

The Council explained the course is designed to

improve training amongst the unemployed, offering them their Food Handler qualification as well as training them about allergens. It is hoped the workshop will improve the CVs of those attending, as well as giving them the necessary qualification for working in certain jobs in the hospitality and food sectors.

The course will provide students with the knowledge and skills for handling food, as well as teaching them the appropriate hygiene techniques to prevent contamination and prevent allergic reactions. It is hoped the qualification will allow participants to gain jobs in catering, nursing homes or school canteens.

Celebrate Guy Fawkes Night and help charity

by Jemima Roberts THE much regarded Villa Tiberio on the Golden Mile in Marbella will once again open its doors to raise funds for the Red Cross and Cudeca Hospice.

Every year, long time restaurateur Sandro Morelli shows his commitment to charity by hosting a number of special events and this year’s winter gala will take place on Sunday November 5.

Although not all of the guests will be British, the majority will be, so the or-

ganisers are taking the opportunity to include a fireworks display in memory of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.

It promises to be another great evening as there will be no less than 10 outstanding musicians and entertainers, many from Marbella giving their talents to the evening and ensuring that it will be a night to remember.

Cost of tickets which includes a champagne reception and a three course dinner with wine are €75 per person which is very reasonable when one considers

all that is being offered with a proportion of the price going to the charities involved.

These are two good causes and additional funds will be raised through a raffle and grand auction.

A FALL FESTIVAL aimed at the elderly will take place at 6pm on Wednesday, November 8 at Fuengirola’s Palacio de la Paz. The event, organised by the council’s Department for the Third Age, will feature live music, dancing and food.

Francisco Jose Martin, Councillor for the Third Age, explained the festival forms part of the activities organised by his department for the last few months of the year.

He commented, "this is a party which we are organising for the third time and which will offer dancing, live music,

drinks, snacks and lots of surprises for its attendees.”

He went on to encourage, "the elders of Fuengirola to attend this party because it is designed for them and they are going to have a great time. It will be very lively and they will be in good company.”

Councillor Martin concluded, "to attend this Autumn Party, older people only have to go to the Social House on Calle Blanca Paloma to receive their invitations.”

He added those wanting to participate have to be involved in Fuengirola and hold a pensioner’s card.

Spooky kids MANILVA council is sponsoring a Halloween party at the Sabinillas sports ground next Sunday from noon until 6pm with children from three local schools enjoying bouncy castles, laser tag, an ice rink and human foosball.

Fishing for a win MORE THAN 120 fisherman are expected to get involved with Fuengirola’s XXVII Fishing Contest on Sunday.

The annual event, organised by the Sport Fishing Club La Baila, will begin at 9am along Fuengirola’s coast line.

Pedro Cuevas, Councillor for Sports, spoke about the competition alongside Dionisio Palencia president of La Baila, and David Sanchez, one of the club’s members. Councillor Cuevas explained registration to enter the contest would be open until Sunday morning and participants, as well as paying an entry fee, must contribute one kilo of non-perishable food to the municipal foodbank.

He commented the event was in its “27th year and in Fuengirola we should be very happy because a sporting event of this magnitude contributes to making this town great.” He went on to “congratulate the management of La Baila for the work it has been doing and for promoting the sport of fishing in our town and exporting it to all parts of the world.”

The event’s organisers explained the competition was a national one with judges from within Spain but would also feature guest fisherman from Portugal and Italy. David Sanchez commented, "the contest will take place on Sunday from nine in the morning to two in the afternoon and a raffle for positions will be held at seven in the

The entrants will fish on a patch of coast between Playa del Castillo and Los Boliches, and "there will be a prize of €1,000 for first place, €500 for second and there will also be prizes for women, for senior participants, for the biggest catch, plus a large showcase of prizes such as reels, reeds and fishing equipment so that no participant leaves without his prize” according to Sanchez.

He concluded, "the weighing of the catch will be carried out at the end of the competition, around 2.30pm at the Third Age booth at the Fairground,

The event, entitled “Mindfulness to live better and sleep well,” is designed to decrease anxiety, reduces stress, as well as change the structure of the brain and promote a more sat-

isfactory sleep. According to the council, “in the workshop, basic practices will be taught out to get rid of mental habits that lead to problems, offering the first step in learning to live a more satisfying life, achieving greater emotional balance and improving your night’s sleep.”

The free workshop will be given by Dr. Georgina Botebol, a specialist in neurophysiology, and an expert in psychodrama, cognitive therapy and mindfulness. Places will be prioritised for those living in Fuengirola.

Don’t suffer in silence by

Seven years ago, in preparation for my move from the UK to Spain, I so drastically pared down my worldly belongings that, by the end of the exercise, what was left fitted neatly into seven large cardboard boxes.

Thus I began my new life on the Costa Blanca with just my favourite cooking utensils, my iMac, some clothes and a lucrative publishing contract with a British company that had agreed to my relocation because everything I did was Internet based.

Blue skies and warm weather for most of year, plus financial stability and friendships made in Benidorm during previous holidays to the resort, would, I imagined, ensure a life of pure bliss.

Then something went drastically wrong around three years ago. The first warning signs occurred when I suddenly developed chronic depression and a fear of flying. This was followed by a series of crippling panic attacks every time I left my apartment, and, after col-

lapsing in the street one evening, I virtually became a recluse, venturing out only to buy provisions.

The agoraphobia had a devastating effect on my work as my contract required me to travel four times a year to London to meet with the company chiefs and discuss future plans.

This became such an ordeal that, after excusing myself from several meetings, I was compelled to explain my predicament. Company board members were sympathetic but made clear that it was in my own interests as well as theirs to get myself sorted out.

That’s when I splashed out more than £400 on a device that sends electronic pulses to the brain, and is meant to cure post-traumatic stress disorder, which I believed I was suffering.

This from The National Institute of Mental Health: “Not everyone with PTSD has been through a dangerous event. Some experiences, like the sudden, unexpected death of a loved one, can also cause PTSD. Symptoms usually begin early, within three months of the traumatic incident, but sometimes they begin years afterward.

“Symptoms may last more than a month and be severe enough to interfere with relationships or work … The course of the illness varies. Some people recover within six months, while others have symptoms that last much longer.

In some people, the condition becomes chronic.”

The device helped somewhat but not enough to cure me, and I reluctantly concluded that I would need to consult a psychotherapist. I say reluctantly because I have never been one for discussing my problems with others, always choosing to bottle my emotions.

So I sought help from Stephen Ashley, a therapist who holds weekly consultations in Alfaz del Pi and other places too, and quickly came to realise that, while I had settled in Spain with a minimum of physical possessions, I had brought with me a ton of crippling emotional baggage.

My first meeting with Stephen took place on September 28, 2016, and by the end of the year I was able, without a trace of anxiety, to board a flight to the UK. I had several more sessions with him, and by March of this year I felt liberated enough to cease treatment. It was with a sadness, though, that I bid Stephen farewell because I went from dreading

our encounters – some of which were extremely taxing – to actively looking forward to them.

Regular readers will know that my columns are normally lighthearted observations of life in Spain, but I felt compelled to write this one in the hope that it may help folk who are suffering problems similar to those that turned my life into a living hell.

FOR SOME weeks now I have banged on about politics, and politician’s. I must apologise, it must be that I have now become a grumpy old man.

However, I want to wave a banner to one of the greatest ideas that anybody has come up with in recent times.

The Invictus Games, where men and women who have survived appalling injuries, compete in an Olympic style sports games, these games have become part of their rehabilitation, some have appalling injuries after losing limbs or sight while serving in the armed forces.

I want to denounce the British Government for the continued attempt to try to show the rest of the world that we are still a great fighting nation.

It has cost us a fortune that we can ill afford, apart from the overseas aid that we have to continue to give to the countries that we have fought in or fight in at this present day.

As our young men and women lose their lives and their limbs, in god forbidden places that we should not have been in, in the first place.

I applaud Prince Harry for his success in bringing the games into the world spotlight, allowing us mortals to see how great these young people can be even with terrible injuries.

I know some Royal Princes can be criticised, after all he was born into royalty. It was not his fault and this young, upright man has succeeded in life in his own way, becoming a soldier and serving in the frontline was his brave choice, he could have joined air miles Andy, his uncle jetting around, winking at pretty girls.

No! Harry did his thing and since he left the services he is paying back his colleagues, using his warmth, humour and kindness. It was good to see him re-

cently with his lovely girlfriend Meghan, who I am a great fan of, after watching her for a long time in the brilliant TV series Suits. I do hope they get married as they look so in love and happy together.

As I am writing about the Invictus games I want to mention one man in particular. He is Corporal Ricky Paul Furgusson, formerly of The Rifles.

Ricky Furgusson went to the aid of wounded comrades in Afghanistan, he smiled broadly as he stepped forward on carbon fibre legs to receive a gallantry medal from the Queen, his bravery on the battlefield helped save the lives of many of his comrades.

wards and forwards four times to rescue colleagues in Afghanistan in January. He has only been on his artificial legs for six weeks, but was determined to walk up to the Queen to receive the Military Cross at Buckingham Palace.

This is a man to admire, many youngsters, who sit around guzzling beer and smoking weed should look to this kind of person as an example of what being British is, this is a part of our culture that we seem to have lost. Must we go on fighting other people’s wars, and losing some of our young people that could be the backbone of Britain, I hope not.

The curse of mankind is unquestioned acceptance of one’s enslavement. Throughout history, humans use fellow humans to war on their foes. Wage-slaves are used to manufacture goods or manage services, to sell on at a profit or to serve the profiteering elite.

The worst century for human slavery was the 20th century and the 21st century may be worse. Virtually everything made is manufactured under battery hen workplace conditions. Workers don’t question their hand to mouth galley slave existence.

The Soviet Union’s only worthwhile achievements were built by slaves. These accomplishments were attained by captives harvested from over thirty nations surrendered to or occupied by the Bolsheviks.

A taboo topic is that virtually every slave in the Soviet Gulag was transported by an infrastructure; ships, cattle cars and vehicles, provided by the Western powers. Average life expectancy in the Gulag was 40 days; there were plentiful replacements. Tens of millions of Europeans died. The true figures will never be known as no one then or now is interested in keeping records.

Soviet ‘Five Year Plan’ successes were dependent upon captives described by Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky as ‘White Negroes’ .

Sub-Saharan Africans plundered and sold other Africans to visiting slave ship owners. Many English exiles, sentenced by the courts for trivial crimes, were sold and bartered en-route by Australia-bound shipowners to African chiefs.

Since biblical times the Arab enslavers of Africa depopulated the coastal regions of Mediterranean Europe. Even England and Ireland were raided to feed the Moors insatiable demand for European slaves.

read it in media or see it on your TV screens.

Another taboo topic: Taxes spent on war in the last 10-years alone could have bought every American citizen an idyllic home in an all-facilities garden community.

The money spent on just interest payable on warrelated loans would provide every U.S. citizen with a two-month paid vacation every year. Do the math: Total cost of U.S. wars over the last 10 years $6 trillion.

The average cost of a small home is $60,000. Number of homes built for $6 trillion 100 million.

The insatiable U.S. and EU economies are war economies dominated by Parliaments, Congress, and Pentagon, corporate and banking interests.

An uncomfortable truth; a high number of wage slaves are indentured slaves to the banking and political systems. Anyone who hates his work but does so for security is enslaved. He is no different from the galley slave or gladiator who wields the state’s sword or pulls the oar knowing that failure to do so results in work, food and water deprivation.

Even under a leaden sky on a December day, the vast flatness of the Norfolk countryside is inescapable.

The distinctive Norfolk dialect is a language encapsulated in its landscape, with long vowels and wide horizons, summing up the county and its people.

Norfolk is familiar to us during the summer months, with its endless skies and fantastic light so beloved by painters, who are as numerous as the wild fowl in the coastal wetlands.

With the sunshine on your back and from the unbroken vista of fields and pastures of the hinterland, to the long sandy beaches and marshland of the coastal regions, there is an other-world-

ly feel to this lovely eastern county.

But what could possibly entice someone here on a bleak winter’s day?

Seven miles north of the town of Fakenham and almost without warning to the unwary, we turn into a narrow country lane, indicating Thursford village. With barely room for two vehicles to pass and with no street lighting, this would appear to be heading into uncharted territory.

The only clue to the uninitiated that something interesting lays ahead is the procession of car tail lights and a discernible glow in the sky that increases in intensity as we progress.

Then after a bare half mile and quite suddenly, we enter a massive flood-

lit car park where fluorescently clad stewards are busily directing the flow of cars and coaches.

Enter the magical world of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular.

To most people, the name Thursford will elicit looks of incomprehension.

In the summer months it is home to one of the most important steam collections in the world, but during November and December it is totally converted and given a Christmas theme; with almost 130 thousand people attending and like us, many returning year on year.

It is perhaps Christmas’ best kept secret and yet paradoxically, the biggest and most breathtaking of all

Christmas shows.

It would take much more space to adequately describe this event, and even then I could not hope to do it justice. The ambience is sheer enchantment and it simply has to be experienced firsthand.

The content is a combination of traditional Christmas and variety, but the genius of John Cushing, Thursford’s producer and director, is to tie the whole package together with a loving festive ribbon and deliver a memorable Christmas extravaganza.

This Yuletide masterpiece is a musthave addition to everyone’s bucket list. But do it soon, some of you are looking peaky.

Halloween – the origins and the traditions HALLOWEEN’S origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.

Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.

On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By 43 A.D., the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead.

The second was a day to honour Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably

explains the tradition of “bobbing” for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition and the return of deceased relatives and friends.

For these friendly spirits, they set places at the dinner table, left treats on doorsteps and along the side of the road and lit candles to help loved ones find their way back to the spirit world. Today’s Halloween ghosts are often depicted as more fearsome and malevolent, and our customs and superstitions are scarier too. We avoid crossing paths with

black cats, afraid that they might bring us bad luck. This idea has its roots in the Middle Ages, when many people believed that witches avoided detection by turning themselves into cats. We try not to walk under ladders for the same reason. This superstition may have come from the ancient Egyptians, who believed that triangles were sacred; it also may have something to do with the fact that walking under a leaning ladder tends to be fairly unsafe. And around Halloween, especially, we try to avoid breaking mirrors, stepping on cracks in the road or spilling salt.

But what about the Halloween traditions and beliefs that today’s trick-or-treaters have forgotten all about? Many of these obsolete rituals focused on the future instead of the past and the living instead of the dead.

In Scotland, fortune-tellers recommended that an eligible young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then toss the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, the story went, represented the girl’s future husband. Another tale had it that if a young woman ate a sugary concoction made out of walnuts, hazelnuts and nutmeg before bed on Halloween night she would dream about her future husband.

Other rituals were more competitive. At some Halloween parties, the first guest to find a burr on a chestnut-hunt would be the first to marry; at others, the first successful apple-bobber would be the first down the aisle.

The event of the Winter Season

By Michael Cano THERE are certain events which take pride of place in people’s calendars in Marbella and this year’s St Nikolaus Ball to be held at the Puente Romano hotel on December 9 is one of them.

Income from the evening which attracts the rich and famous from the Costa del Sol goes to help support the Concordia Anti-Aids Asociacion (ACAS) founded by Princess Marie Louise of Prussia.

The Princess, a long-time resident of Marbella founded the only HIV/AIDS charity on the Costa del Sol in 1994 and has been tirelessly raising funds for the organisation

ever since.

The St Nikolaus dinner is a very important way of bringing the never ending problem of the disease to the attention of the public and is graced each year with a letter of support from Princess Marie-Louise’s cousin Queen Sofia.

Funds are used to run a dedicated centre at Calle Carlota Navarrete, 21 in San Pedro de Alcantara which opened in 1997 and professionals assist not just those who have the virus which is now quite manageable with treatment but spend a great deal of time trying to educate young girls and boys who are now most at risk about the dangers of

unprotected sex.

This is an occasion where guests can enjoy an incredibly good meal in luxurious surroundings and know that whilst they are having a good time, they are also helping those who are struggling with this illness which happily - thanks to advances in medical science - is no longer a guaranteed death sentence.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Changing verbs from second to third person singular

We are well on the way to understanding one of the most fundamental things about Spanish verbs and that is that a subtle change of a couple of letters makes a big difference to the meaning. This is so alien to us English speakers and really explains why we develop such a phobia about them. Another reason for our angst about verbs is that unlike the Spanish, who study their own language in a very conventional way at school, most of us have little grounding in English grammar so therefore are at a complete disadvantage if someone starts to teach us Spanish in a grammatical way.

And there’s a third reason! When you are born into a particular language community your brain develops according to the language that you are brought up speaking, so trying to convince your brain to put words together differently is a bit like trying to make a computer use a program that it is not designed for.

These reflections are supposed to encourage you rather than make you want to give up! It is my belief that if someone really wants to learn and has the language explained to them

in a way they can relate to, then they will slowly grasp it and start to make progress. This requires patience and also a certain amount of self-belief and self-confidence. If you say you’ll never learn it, you never will. If you are positive and determined to go forward, you will, in your own way and at your own pace.

So, the fact is that in English we hardly make any changes to verbs. Take a verb like “play” – it can only change to “plays” “played” and “playing” – that’s it! Any other information we want to communicate, about who plays or when they play, has to be done by adding other words, such as people words: I, you, he, she, we, they and other little words like : do, did, does, will, won’t, be, am, are is etc.

So in English we make combinations like: “he plays”, “they will play”, “I have played”, or “she will be playing”.

In Spanish we can indicate the same information of who and when by changing the endings of the verbs themselves. Whereas “play” in English only has four possible forms, its equivalent in Spanish will have about 50 variations!

But the good news is that we have already started to see and accept this gradually, as in the course of these articles we have learnt some of these subtle variations. For example we now know all of this about the verb “speak”: hablar (to speak) hablo (I speak), hablas (you speak – informal), habla (you speak – formal).

But now to what I promised you for today – how to change verbs so that they mean “he” or “she” does something. This is just so easy! All we have to do is take the informal “you” form and remove the letter “s”. If this operation looks familiar to you it should do, as it is identical to the way we produce the formal “you” or usted version.

As usual, some practical examples are needed.

Hablo inglés I speak English Hablas inglés You speak English (informal) Habla inglés You speak English (formal) Habla inglés He speaks English, she speaks English.

Voy a dormir I’m going to sleep Vas a dormir You are going to sleep (informal) Va a dormir You are going to sleep (formal) Va a dormir He is going to sleep, she is going to sleep.

In the sincere hope that you are still with me and that all this is meaning something – I will now anticipate another question that you might ask, as people often do. If the same form is used to mean “you”, “he” and “she”, then how on earth do we know which one is meant in a sentence?

Aha – the answer to this is easy! It is the real life context that tells us. Just as in English, if I say “he speaks English” I assume you know who “he” is, otherwise I would add the person’s name: “Bill speaks English”. Similarly in Spanish, we assume knowledge of the person otherwise we have to add that information: “Bill habla inglés”. If however I am referring to “you” in a polite way and not to a “he” or a “she”, then if necessary I can add the word usted just to make this clear.

Looking forward to a new addition to RTN

CELEBRITY Chef Steven Saunders will soon be a regular contributor to RTN where he will give details of some of his most exciting menus and also chat about his fascinating life.

One of the original chefs in Ready Steady Cook he has lived a life that saw him go from a novice at the Savoy Hotel in London to Chef Patron of The White Hart Great Yeldham when he was just 19.

Since then, he has cooked for many celebrities including Princess Diana (who loved his crispy duck which he still produces today) and Prince Charles and will share some of the stories of what he has seen whilst a successful restaurateur, Michelin star chef and writer of 10 successful cook books.

Deciding to slow down and perhaps retire, he and his soon to be wife Michele a former ballet dancer moved to Spain in 2015 but quickly found that the quiet life was not for them and within a matter of months decided to open a restaurant in La Cala de Mijas.

It’s a small, chic, fine dining restaurant that takes the food seriously but treats customers as friends sitting around a chef’s table and literally in no time at all

it had become one of the top La Cala restaurants in the Trip Advisor guides.

Always busy and serving great food, this wasn’t enough for the couple who married in 2016 and they then decided to open another Geranium but this time in Marbella just across the road from the Marbella Club Hotel.

Michele was in charge of interior design and Steven produced the menu which is now cooked by specially recruited chefs from a Dublin Michelin starred restaurant.

To add to this, Steven has just started to run cookery master classes in LG Marbella and he will be offering RTN readers the chance to win a day with him cooking Michelin quality food and enjoying a three course meal with wine.

method

In a medium bowl, mix together 2 tablespoons olive oil, paprika, oregano, and salt and pepper. Stir in chicken pieces to coat. Cover, and refrigerate.

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large frying pan or paella pan over medium heat. Stir in garlic, red pepper flakes,

and rice. Cook, stirring, to coat rice with oil, about 3 minutes. Stir in saffron threads, bay leaf, parsley, chicken stock, and lemon zest. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a separate skillet over medium

Ingredients

1/2 cup olive oil, 1/2 pound potatoes thinly sliced, salt and pepper to taste, 1 large onion thinly sliced, 4 eggs, salt and pepper to taste, 2 tomatoes peeled, seeded and coarsely chopped, 2 green onions, chopped

method

1. In a large frying pan, heat olive oil over mediumhigh heat. Sprinkle potatoes lightly with salt and pepper. Cook until golden brown and crisp.

2. Once the potatoes are golden, stir in the onions.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions soften and begin to brown.

3. Meanwhile, beat eggs together with salt and pepper. Pour eggs into pan and stir gently to combine.

Reduce heat to low and cook until eggs begin to brown on the bottom.

4. Loosen bottom of omelette with a spatula, invert a large plate over the pan, and carefully turn the omelette out onto it. Slide the omelette back into the pan with the uncooked side down. Cook until eggs are set. Garnish omelette with tomato and green onion and serve warm.

Where men suffer more than women

You might know that some conditions affect more women than men, such as osteoporosis and breast cancer, but did you know that men are at far greater risk of dying from heart disease and cancer?

Heart disease Coronary heart disease (CHD) accounts for the deaths of nearly one-insix men and one-in-10 women each year in the UK. According to the British Heart Foundation, there are currently 2.3 million people living with heart disease in the UK more than 1.4 million men and 850,000 women – and almost twice as many men as women suffer with a heart attack each year (110,000 men, compared to 65,000 women).

Parkinson's disease Parkinson's disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged

over many years. The three main symptoms of Parkinson's disease are: involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body, slow movement, and stiff and inflexible muscles.

Men are 1.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than women, although scientists aren't sure why.

Around 127,000 people in the UK have the condition. Most people with Parkinson's start to develop symptoms when they're over 50, although around 1 in 20 people with the condition first experience symptoms when they're under 40.

Skin Cancer Men are far more likely to die from malignant melanoma – the most serious type of skin cancer – compared to women.

According to Cancer Research UK, death rates amongst men are 70 per cent higher than women,

despite similar numbers being diagnosed with the disease each year.

Some 6,200 men develop melanoma each year in the UK and 1,300 die from the disease, yet only 900 of the 6,600 women who develop it die.

Cancer in general It's not just skin cancer

that men are more likely to die from. A recent US study analysed 36 different types of tumours and blood cancers that affect both sexes and found that men have about a 1-in-2 chance of developing cancer at some point in their lives, compared with 1-in-3 chance for women.

What’s all the fuss about cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a lipid (fat chemical) that is produced by the liver from the fatty foods that we eat.

The level of cholesterol in your blood is an important factor in determining your risk of developing heart disease or suffering a stroke.

Cholesterol is carried in the blood as part of particles called lipoproteins.

Low-density lipoproteins carrying cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) is often referred to as bad cholesterol as this is involved in forming atheroma (see below) which is the main underlying cause of various cardiovascular diseases.

High-density lipoproteins carrying cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) is often referred to as good cholesterol as HDL may prevent atheroma forming.

Atheroma are like small fatty lumps that develop within the inside lining of arteries (blood vessels).

Atheroma is also known

as atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

Should a blood clot (thrombosis) form over a patch of atheroma it can completely block the blood flow causing a heart attack, stroke or other serious problems.

Untreated high cholesterol levels can have such disastrous consequences, it is important that all adults should be aware of their cholesterol level. This is determined by a very simple blood test. Should cholesterol levels be high the patient will usually be advised about diet and life style changes, then cholesterol re-checked in about 3 months time. If cholesterol levels remain high the patient may be commenced on medication to reduce it.

Do not wait for a life threatening condition to manifest and reveal the fact that you have high cholesterol. Early diagnosis and management can save your life.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES: Future health issues linked to diabetes WOMEN WHO have had gestational diabetes may be able to reduce or even eliminate their risk for cardiovascular disease by following a healthy lifestyle in the years after giving birth, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The researchers analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study II following health habits and medical history of more than 90,000 women from before pregnancy through middle age and the early senior years.

The study confirms the links between

gestational diabetes and cardiovascular disease found by other studies. It also provides some of the strongest evidence to date that cardiovascular disease after gestational diabetes isn’t inevitable for women who adopt a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise moderately and do not smoke.

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes, or high blood sugar that occurs only during pregnancy. Although it often disappears after birth, many women who had the condition later develop

type 2 diabetes, usually by middle age.

Some studies have shown women who had gestational diabetes are also at risk for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, hardening of the arteries, heart attack and stroke.

In the current study, the researchers found that women who failed to adopt a healthy lifestyle in the wake of gestational diabetes had a 43 per cent higher risk of contracting or suffering from the conditions listed above.

It’s not only for sportsmen and women ATHLETE’S FOOT (technical name tinea pedis) is a rash caused by a fungus that usually appears between the toes.

The affected skin may be itchy, red, scaly, dry, cracked or blistered. It’s not usually serious, but should be treated to stop it spreading to other parts of the body or other people, and treatment usually involves over-the-counter creams, sprays or liquids and good foot hygiene.

Athlete’s foot most commonly affects the skin between the toes or on the bottom of the feet, and the affected areas of skin may be dry, red, scaly and flaky; white, soggy and cracked; itchy and sore; or covered in small blisters The infection can spread around your foot and to your toenails, and scratching the infected skin and then touching other parts of your body can also spread the infection.

In severe cases, skin damaged by athlete’s foot can become infected with bacteria. This can lead to cellulitis, which causes the skin to become red, hot and swollen.

Athlete’s foot is caused by fungi growing and

multiplying on the skin. The fungi that cause the infection thrive in warm, dark and moist places like feet.

You’re more likely to get athlete’s foot if you don’t keep your feet clean and dry; wear shoes that cause your feet to get hot and sweaty; walk around barefoot in places where fungal infections can spread easily, such as communal showers, locker rooms and gyms; share towels, socks and shoes with other people; have a weakened immune system; have certain other health conditions, such as diabetes.

Athlete’s foot is unlikely to get better on its own.

It can usually be treated using antifungal treatments available from pharmacies without needing to see a GP, although not all types are suitable for children, older people, and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

If your rash is very sore and itchy, a pharmacist may recommend using a mild steroid cream to ease any discomfort, but this should only be used for a short period and in combination with antifungal treatment.

This week, rather than answer a series of questions, I wanted to answer this one important point in more depth, as too many people fail to have regular eye tests. Many problems with the eyes have no symptoms, so you should have a check-up with your optometrist every two years.

More frequent checks are advised for the over 70s or those with a family history of glaucoma or a condition such as diabetes because they are more at risk of certain eye diseases.

While many people know that a routine eye test can identify sight-related illnesses such as glaucoma and cataracts, a relatively unknown fact is that the same eye test could help to detect serious medical conditions that you wouldn’t usually associate with the eyes, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and brain tumours. Optometrists are trained over a period of four years to look out for eye related diseases and these other medical conditions. Recent advances in technology such as digital retinal photography are helping to identify conditions early and save lives by referring patients to the right medical professional quickly to get treatment.

Bicentenary of the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh Celebration of the bahá’í community of Marbella.

Sunday October 22 marked the bicentenary of the Birth of the Prophet-Founder of the world’s youngest and fastest growing religion - the Bahá’í Faith. Exactly 200 years ago Bahá´u´lláh was born, and you may be surprised to learn that there is a vibrant Bahá´í community in Marbella, but you needn't be, as the Bahá’í Faith is the second most widespread religion in the world, after Christianity.

A large celebration was held in the Barceló Hotel in San Pedro, attended by more than 300 people, where a visual feast was prepared by the artistically-minded

and highly-talented organisers who did not let the crowd down.

Bahá’u’lláh was a lover of nature, calling nature the home of the soul, whereas the city was only the home of the body. His favourite flower was the rose, and the stage was majestically prepared as a gigantic rose garden, around which the cultural performances took place.

Thousands of similar celebrations took place on the same day around the world, but the one in Marbella had a uniquely Spanish touch, laced with numerous flamenco dances, highly-symbolic in nature.

The Bahá´í Faiths appeal comes

Free concert TOMORROW night (Saturday) will see Fuengirola’s Palacio de la Paz open its doors for a free music concert starting at 7.30pm.

The Municipal Music Band and the Andalusian Musical Association will be performing Spanish music for crowds on a firstcome-first-served basis. Rodrigo Romero, Councillor for Culture, explained, “This Saturday we again have a concert in the Palace of Peace with the Music Band and the Andalusia Musical Association, which during these years is serving as a very important springboard to all the young people of Fuengirola who wish to continue practicing with a band and certain they are doing a fantastic job that will be reflected in this concert because of the effort involved in playing together.”

He added, “it will be a very fun and entertaining repertoire that will have a little bit of everything, with direct music for band, traditional Spanish music and music of soundtracks; that is to say, a varied concert, fun and with two great bands demonstrating the high level that they have “.

The concert, which will be directed by Juan Crisostomo Subiela Dura for the Andalucian Music Association and Jose Maria Machuca Osorio for the Municipal Band, will begin with a pasodoble Agüero,

by Jose Franco. The first half will end with a selection of compositions by John Williams for the Indiana Jones film franchise.

The second part of the program will start with the pasodoble Yakka, by Jose Rafael Pascual Vilaplana and the Slavic March, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and will close with the Pirates of the Caribbean Symphony Suite by Klaus Badelt.

• The imperative to eliminate all forms of prejudice, whether they relate to race, gender, religion or other.

• The need for an international auxiliary language to be taught in all schools to facilitate understanding and world unity etc…

The celebrations showcased, with the help of a lot kids and youth, the activities the Bahá’ís are doing in neighbourhoods around Marbella, and seemed to show that the Bahá’í were definite believers in thinking globally, but acting locally. Although a bubbly Bahá’í community has existed in Marbella for decades, last Sunday showcased the richness of culture they bring to our wider community.

Social workshop LOS BOLICHES has kicked off its season of activities for the elderly with a series of workshops to prevent social-isolation.

Fuengirola Councillor for the Third Age, Francisco Jose Martin, spoke about the events alongside the workshops’ director, Alfredo Martin. How dirty is your casa?

Forget the Spring Cleaning which was a regular task when people lived in the UK. After another Spanish summer which has probably seen many hibernate in their villas and apartments with the air-conditioning full on, more time has been spent indoors and left a feeling of being ‘lived-in’. Many would’ve had visitors and many are perhaps returning to the Costa Blanca to find the results of a season of holiday rentals.

While nobody wants extra tasks to add to the cleaning to-do list, there are a few jobs to do every now and again to keep homes in tip top, germ-free condition.

Here are 10 things that appear, on the surface (!), to be obvious, but you might just be forgetting to clean around your home: 1. Between and under the sofa cushions: anyone who has luckily dug up a handful of euro coins from down the sofa will know what an Aladdin’s cave it can become down there.

2. Under the fridge is a magnet for dust, crumbs and those odd specks of dirt we conveniently kick out of the way when we’re cleaning the floor. Take care and ask for help if you need it to move the fridge slightly to one side and then get under

4. Doorknob and switches: consider how many people touch your doorknobs in a week or a month and where those hands might have been and you may find yourself scrabbling for the disinfectant.

Just a microfibre cloth dabbed with some disinfectant will do the job in no time.

9. The remote control is worryingly one of the dirtiest things in your house so be sure to disinfect it or give it a wipe down with a wet wipe.

10. Your landline phone can alarmingly become home to more germs than your toilet seat so give it a good wipe down (receiver and all) before you take that next phone call.

New Ford EcoSport SUV built in Romania FORD MOTOR Company - taking aim at Europe’s fastest-growing vehicle segment –have started production of the new Ford EcoSport small SUV at its Craiova, Romania, assembly plant.

The decision to build the new EcoSport in Europe rather than continue to import the vehicle from Ford’s plant in Chennai, India, will help Ford respond to rising customer demand.

“EcoSport is another example of how Ford is growing our business on our strengths – including worldclass SUVs,” said Steven Armstrong, Ford group vice president and president, Europe Middle East and Africa. “With demand growing for EcoSport, and compact SUVs in general, now is the right time to localize production in Europe to meet our customers’ needs.”

Total industry sales of SUVs in Ford’s 20 European traditional markets grew by 27 per cent last

year and accounted for more than one in four new passenger car registrations. Ford’s SUV sales in Europe grew more than 30 per cent in 2016 and have risen by 27 per cent in the first eight months of 2017.

SUV growth means more jobs, too. By year-end, Ford is creating another 1,700 jobs at Ford Craiova, bringing the total workforce for both vehicle and engine production to 3,900. Ford’s total investment in its Romanian world-class facility now exceeds €1 billion since it took over the plant in March 2008.

Craiova is the sole source of EcoSport production for Europe (excluding Russia), supplying 56 markets on four continents. This includes markets as diverse as the United Kingdom, New Caledonia in Oceania, Turkmenistan in Central Asia, and South Africa.

Modern cars at risk of cyberattacks IN ORDER to mitigate the risks of cyberattacks that come with the everincreasing connectivity of motor vehicles, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has published a number of principles of automobile cybersecurity, which all its members endorse.

“The digital world offers unprecedented opportunities,” stated ACEA Secretary General, Erik Jonnaert. “Nevertheless, opportunity comes with risks, and one of these is the threat of direct cyberattacks on your car or indeed a whole fleet of vehicles.

Keeping cybersecurity risks for connected vehicles in check is therefore of crucial importance.”

Firstly, countering such risks requires the number of data interfaces within a vehicle to be limited. Secondly, interfaces that are needed for connectivity purposes should be protected with very high cybersecurity measures. Highly aware of this, the automobile industry has taken the lead in designing and producing safe and secure connected and automated vehicles, by following well-established safety and security principles.

Triples feast at Miraflores!

A former player, Tony Matthews is now the world’s most prolific author of football books with 150 published since 1975. He has also been a PE teacher, policeman, radio correspondant and is now a quiz-organiser and fund–raiser, for various charities.

The finalists (From L to R): Brenda, Tom & Joyce (Runnersup) and Nancy, James & Carol (Winners) The Miraflores Drawn Triples competition took place this week in wonderful weather conditions. With a good entry there were some very closely contested matches, but in the end the teams of Carol Frost, Nancy Shaw & James Tyrer and Joyce Carr, Tom Cordner & Brenda Collier won through to the final.

Joyce and her team got their noses in front early on but Carol and her team kept plugging away so that after 12 ends the score was 13-12 to Carol. Carol, Nancy and James then had a run of winning ends to take an unassailable 24-13 lead after 17 ends at which point Joyce conceded defeat.

Both teams received warm applause from the crowd for their efforts. Nancy was defending her title, but this was a first final for both Carol and James who will now take their places on the honours board.

The largest open bowls competition

on the coast the Miraflores Open will be starting on Saturday 11th November. There will be events in three disciplines namely Mixed Triples, Mixed Pairs and Open Fours.

Finals day, Sunday 19th November is normally a very popular event for spectators, especially the presentations and draw with prizes from local businesses for entrants who are present, don't miss it!! This year the guest of honour will be Nuria Rodriguez who is Sports Councillor for Mijas.

Friendly match A FRIENDLY football match has taken place between Fuengirola Los Boliches and the Finnish club, JKB Finland.

Pedro Cuevas, Councillor for Sports, spoke before the event alongside Tomas Medina, vice president of the Sports Union Fuengirola Los Boliches, and Piita Vuosalmi, one of the club’s members.

Councillor Cuevas explained, "fooball fans will this Thursday be able to enjoy a friendly match between the Fuengirola-Los Boliches Sports Union and a Finnish team, an

international match put together to have a good time and enjoy good football, allowing this Finnish team to come to Fuengirola, spend a few days here and also play a match in our town.”

Tomas Medina added, "this is an example of the Finnish twinning with Fuengirola and especially with our club, because they have always collaborated with us every time we have organised a food collection thanks to Piita, who belongs to the board of our club and is a kind of representative of all the Finns living in

Fuengirola. In this case, they will collaborate with us by playing a match to raise funds for sports equipment to help football and sport in general.”

Piita Vuosalmi said the Finnish community in Fuengirola, "has always helped out and we have done a lot to collaborate with the club and this time we are going to play a friendly match to bring together many Finns and Spaniards, have fun with a great atmosphere so that everyone goes away happy and they tighten our bond even more.”
