by Michael Cano BOATING Is increasingly popular in Andalucia with the 17 marinas belonging to the Andalucian Marina Marinas Association seeing earnings of â‚Ź7 million.

Average occupation at these 17 private marinas reached 85 per cent during the summer months and according to the association, this popularity is thanks to the high quality of service and standards reached by its members

which attracts increasing number of tourists.

Group members provide 60 per cent of all of the berths along the Andalucian coastline and the busier they are, the more work that is generated both directly and through support services.

Marinas which are members of the association comprise some of the best known in the Costa del sol including Cabopino, Duquesa, Estepona, Fuengirola Marbella, Puerto Banus and sotogrande.

€100,000 education boost WORKS to improve Arroyo de la Miel’s IES Cerros del Viento school have now finished.

The town’s Mayor, Victor Navas, visited the school alongside Patricia Alba, a delegate from the Ministry for Education. Mayor Navas explained, “the Board has made an important investment effort in improving our educational infrastructure, as demonstrated by the nearly €100,000 invested last summer, and a future investment of €1 million in IES Arroyo de la Miel.”

Councillor Alba added, “thanks to last summer’s investment, IES Cerros del Viento has a new classroom designed for the Baccalaureate of Arts.”

The works, which were funded by the Ministry of Education, were completed over the summer holiday, increasing the school’s size and capacity. A space measuring 90 square metres previously used as a reception space was converted to create a classroom. An outside space measuring 150 square metres was also converted to be used as a classroom.

Mayor Navas explained investment from the Ministry for Education last year allowed Benaldadema Council to open specialist school,

the Poeta Salvador Rueda school.

He concluded, “taking advantage of this visit, we have again told the delegate about the urgent need for a new institute in Benalmadena.

The Town Hall continues to work to buy the plot in Retamar to make it available for the Board and create a new school, which we hope will be a reality in the academic year 2019/2020.”

Police tribute POLICE wILL have two roundabouts dedicated to them in Fuengirola. The National Police and Guardia Civil will be paid tribute as two town roundabouts are named after them on Avenida Alcalde Clemente Diaz Ruiz. Amidst the turmoil of the Catalan referendum, a mass rally was held in front of Fuengirola town hall in an effort to show unity and support for the country’s police forces.

Women’s rights A WOMEN’S CENTRE has organised a workshop on legal rights following separation or divorce.

The class will be given by legal counsel from the Delegation of Equality and Women and will deal with procedures surrounding separation and divorce.

Arroyo de la Miel’s Women’s Centre on Calle Guerra Valdenebro will organise the event, which will also deal with custody of children, alimony, visitation rights and co-parenting, as well as shared custody agreements and access to justice.

Diploma day for youngsters

by Richard Johnson BENALMADENA COUNCIL has handed out certificates to young people who took part in an employment drive.

The town’s Mayor, Victor Navas, gave out the diplomas alongside the Councillor for Employment, Beatriz Olmedo, to the scheme’s participants. Mayor Navas commented, “the council is fully satisfied with the work of the 200 participants in working to improve their professional experience and facilitate their return to the labour market.”

Councillor Olmedo added, “thanks to the contribution of these workers we have been able to tackle projects and initiatives that could not have been undertaken by the council’s human resources department.” She told the participants, who were aged 30 and under, “on behalf of the council I thank you for the willingness and enthusiasm with which you have faced your tasks, and I encourage you to continue with your training and taking advantage of the tools offered by various organisations to start businesses or improve your pro-

fessional training.”

She added, “the objective of this project was to improve the employability of jobseekers in the municipality, acquiring professional skills through work experience carrying out social and community projects in Benalmadena.”

The project, which lasted for 15 months, saw 200 people employed in five or six month contracts. Councillor Olmedo concluded, “the Employment Department will continue working to increase the employment opportunities for residents.”

SPOTTED in Puerto Banus whilst attending the Marbella international Film Festival, was the very cheerful and smiling Michelle Collins who left with the Best Actress Award.

The actress is very busy at the moment as she hopes that her short film Black Road in which she plays a caring prostitute will be picked up by TV for series and is also in the process of launching her own beauty range.

Beach improvement works have already begun

STARTED: Works between La Cala and El Bombo beach

WORKS to improve beaches ahead of next summer’s high-season have already begun in La Cala de Mijas.

Jose Antonio Gonzalez, Councillor for Beaches, has visited works to maintain the SenderoLitoral which runs between La Cala beach and El Bombo beach.

The councillor explained the works would see the area levelled, adding, “once the number of tourists on our beaches decreases, we continue to improve our coastal path. This time the work is focusing on the leveling of concrete slabs in this stretch. Since their installation they had not had any maintenance work.”

The works, which will last approximately five weeks, will cover

around 650 meters of SendaLitoral in which more than 1200 tiles that will be moved by operators. Councillor Gonzalez explained, “we are talking about slabs that weigh about 400 kilos so it is necessary to use machinery to move and reposition them.”

The area’s coastal path was this year given the Blue Trail award, in addition to several other quality awards handed out to Mijas’s beaches in 2017. Councillor Gonzalez explained, “throughout the year we work to make our beaches look their best, which is the only way we will maintain and increase these certificates of quality that are undoubtedly a great tourist attraction.”

€171,948 road works begin

by Pippa Harris WORKS HAVE begun to Mijas’ El Juncal road linking Santiago and Molino de Viento.

The multi-thousand Euro project will connect the main roads as well as offering access to four others; Virgen de Monserra, Virgen de la Cabeza, Virgen del Pilar and Virgen del Rocio.

The works were awarded to company Fernndez and Lind Construcciones and are expected to take around 90 days. The town’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, explained, “we continue to bet on El Juncal by giving it new infrastructure which will improve the quality of life of residents. This will bring value to the area and give fluidity to traffic, as well as improving pipelines and eliminating architectural barriers.” He added, “this will bring a main artery to the neighbourhood, offering greater security and mobility to neighbours.”

The stretch of road has a

length of 155 linear meters and the current paving and finishes, both on sidewalks and on roads, are in poor condition, requiring full remodelling.

Mayor Maldonado added, “we are going to improve all our infrastructures and, in this case, we are going to create ones. There will also be for the first time separate networks for sewage and rainwater, as well as public lighting, electrical and telecommunications networks and paving to join roads together like Virgen del Rocio and Virgen del Pilar, which used to have only pedestrian access, and will now be equipped for road traffic.”

Construction works for a new parking lot on El Juncal are now also in the planning stage, with a tender having been drafted and offered out. The contract will now be awarded in the next few days. Mayor Maldonado explained, “by the beginning of next year we will be able to put out to tender the execution of works that, in turn, could begin to take effect around May 2018.”

Caught AN ALLIGATOR garfish released into an artifical lake in Marbella has finally been caught.

The animal, which was sighted last week, has been the subject of a fish-hunt to capture it and move it to the Bioparc centre in Fuengirola.

The animal now joins three other examples of its species at the Bioparc’s aqauarium.

Town’s tourism strategy MARBELLA’S MAyoR has met with local hotel owners to put together a tourism strategy.

Angeles Muñoz, held a meeting with hotel managers, explaining, “the objective is to agree with them the whole town’s tourist policy and get across that our presence at national and international fairs goes hand in hand with the hotel sector and then we can combine everyone’s interests.”

He emphasised, “if they have a good hotel occupancy it will mean a significant income for the town and better resources,” while explaining the importance

of having “such a powerful and competitive sector,” with more than 15,000 hotel rooms available.

The Mayor also praised the “excellent quality,” of the hotels on offer, adding, “I am grateful that we have had this day of debate and a meeting.”

For his part, the director of hotel Los Monteros and member of the Association of Hoteliers of the Costa del Sol, Fernando Al-Farkh, explained thanks to this type of meeting, “we can convey to the mayor our concerns and work together to improve the town.” He also advocated the importance of “maintaining the image of quality and exceptional offerings” Marbella has.

by Richard Johnson MIJAS COUNCIL has been chosen to represent Andalucia in attracting Japanese tourists.

The town was selected alongside Malaga, Ronda and Nerja to take part in an initiative to improve the Japaregion’s competitiveness in the Japa nese market.

With more than 12,000 visitors in provthe last year, Mijas is one of the prov ince’s preferred destinations among the Japanese, according to Mijas’ Councillor for Tourism, Fuensanta Lima, as well as manager of the Costa del Sol Tourism Promotion Division, Antonio Diaz.

The plan is expected to last apinproximately two years and will in clude promoting how to interact with Japanese tourists, including translatcustomer service, etiquette, translat ing signage and cultural differences.

Councillor Lima explained, “we are very happy to announce that Mijas muis once again at the head of the mu nicipalities of the province in terms of tourism,” adding it was, “the result of the effort made by the council, thanks to collaboration with other essenentities and agencies, which is essen tial for further progress in this area.”

Whodunnit POLICE havE launched an appeal to find out who shot an endangered Iberian lynx at close-range in Jaen province, andalucia, Spain.

Agents from Seprona, the Guardia Civil´s animal protection unit, have turned to social media to further their investigation after confirming that the animal’s death was no accident.

The Guardia Civil posted on Twitter: "Do you know who shot a lynx in Sierra Morena?”

An autopsy confirmed that the female lynx, who weighed 9.5 kilograms and was just over one-year-old, was shot at close range, approximately five to ten metres.

An x-ray showed more than 100 fragments of lead were inside her body.

The Andalucian Hunting Federation has condemned the act, they said in a statement: "Those who carry out these types of acts are furtive delinquents.

“The hunter can only be called a hunter when he respects the law and loves the countryside and nature."

Taekwondo World Championships BENALMADENA’S COuNCILLOR fOR SPORTS has met with the town’s taekwondo representative ahead of the world championships.

Joaquin Villazon met the athletes alongside the manager of Benalmadena Port, Manual J Jimenez, explaining, “the council is willing to do everything possible to help high-level athletes spread Benalmadena’s name across the world.”

The pair met with Maxi Montiel, instructor and director of the local taekwondo club Doyang, and the sportsman Artur Ababii, days before leaving for Dublin where he will participate in the World Championship until October 16.

The event, which was held in the courtyard of the marina of the Port of Benalmadena, allowed Villazon and Jimenez to show their support for elite sport in the area, delivering promotional materials to the club and announcing grants to help the club travel to the world championships.

Manuel J. Jimenez wished the best of luck to Maxi Montiel and ArturAbabii, and praised the “extraordinary

Maxi Montiel thanked the institutional and economic support of the council and the port and explained he wasconfident in the ability of Artur Ababii, the only representative from Benalmadea in the Spanish team. The group is made up of a total of 26 athletes who were previously crowned Champions of Europe and the world. He explained, “we are very well trained and have loads of enthusiasm. If we don’t suffer too many injuries, I’m sure we can play a big role.”

The Doyang Benalmadena Sports Club already has more than 15 medals gained in various editions of the European and World Taekwondo Championships. This year’s edition will bring together over 1,500 athletes from a total of 59 countries.

European Council supports Spain EUROPEAN COUNCIL President Donald Tusk urged Catalonia’s regional leader on Tuesday not to declare independence, calling on Carles Puigdemont personally not to take a decision that would thwart dialogue.

Tusk, a former Polish prime minister who chairs EU summits and seeks to reflect of the European Union’s governments, said during a speech to an EU regional forum in Brussels: “I ask you to respect, in your intentions, the constitutional order and not to announce a decision that would make such a dialogue impossible.

Diversity should not and need not, lead to conflict, whose consequences would obviously be bad for the Catalans, for Spain and for the whole of Europe.”

Tusk, who noted his own ethnic minority background and personal experience of being hit by police batons as an anti-Communist activist in the 1980s, said he had also urged Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to “look for a solution to the problem without the use of force”.

by Richard Johnson THE NATIONAL POLICE have intercepted a huge shipment of cocaine and marijuana making its way from Marbella to the UK. Miguel Briones, a delegate from the Junta de Andalucia explained agents found the stash hidden inside a second-hand furniture truck. The drugs are believed to have a street value of around €4 million.

Police began investigating after learning of a drug trafficking ring specialising in transporting drugs between Spain and other European countries.

Officers were able to discover a shipment was intended to leave in a truck travelling from Marbella to London, leading to the drugs being intercepted and two people arrested. Francisco Lopez Canedo, the provincial commissioner, explained two men were arrested in Marbella and Estepona on suspicion of storing and preparing the drugs.

The Spanish man, aged 39, and a Canadian man, aged 46, are now in prison for organised crime and drug trafficking. The investigation also led to the discovery of luxury cars and weapons transported by the gang. Mr Lopez Canedo explained investigators are still looking into the extent of the

organisation’s dealings and have not ruled out further arrests.

In total, 59 packages of cocaine, weighting 101 kilos were intercepted, as well as eight bales of marijuana weighting 258 kilos. One of thos arrested was found to have seven mobile phones, three luxury vehicles, 100 grams of marijuana, a gun, a Taser and a submachine gun in his possession.

The arrest comes following a spate of similar events in which Spanish police have foiled foreign criminals hiding out on the Costa del Sol. Last month, the leader of Russia’s largest drug trafficking gang in Estonia was arrested in Mijas following a

joint operation between Spanish and Estonian police.

Police believe the man moved to Spain to avoid falling victim to assassination in the wake of increasing gang violence in Estonia, as well as to establish a power base there for drug trafficking, money laundering and other crimes.

The Spanish and Estonian authorities soon started working together, investigating the gang’s activities in Spain, and ascertaining its leader was issuing orders to members in Estonia. Officers searched the man’s house and found accounting documents, hidden cash, computers, an axe and a large knife hidden under his pillow.

Squatters spark clean up

by Jemima Roberts POLICE HAVE now learned the identities of squatters living in a building in Las Lagunas’ Calle Clavel.

Officers from the Local Police and Guardia Civil visited the building to identify the 15 people living there, as well as to tighten security and carry out a cleaning operation.

The Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, visited the site accompanied by the councillors for Industry and Cleaning, Andres Ruiz and Jos Carlos Martin to inspect the building.

hood and provided extra cleaning services in an attempt to solve the issue.

The issue of squatters affects many municipalities in Spain and “is a problem for councils that are limited when it comes to taking action. On several occasions this has led to areas becoming run down or unsafe,” according to Mijas Council. In Mijas, the council has already dealt with another squat in the Solaris Building which ended in the squatters being evicted.

The Local Police will continue to reinforce the Las Flores neighbourhood and “guarantee” the safety of residents while the situation is being resolved, according to the council.

AFTER REcEiving a grant of €1.5 million from public funds, the San Roque council has transformed a relatively run down industrial estate into a modern business park.

them to trade. He has undertaken to ensure that the paperwork is as easy as possible and the council will be producing new procedures shortly which

will make it easier for new businesses to open.

Thanks to this latest initiative, Manilva has new restaurants, offices, a garage and a pharmacy.

Catalan residents flock to other regions to open accounts

by Staff Reporter AUTHORITIES In Cartama raised the alarm after local water supplies dropped to dangerously low levels. According to the town council, the wells are running scarce, and are at similar levels to those recorded in 2006 when the town council was forced to import water with tanker trucks.

The mayor of Cartama wrote a letter to the Andalusian regional authorities demanding that they take necessary measure to “ensure that the local population has enough drinking water”.

This is the latest in several reports sent from the council to Andalusia’s Environment Department warning of "a severe period of drought that is affecting the existing water resources".

Andalusian authorities affirmed that the wells in the area are at minimum levels and the water could become unsuitable for human consumption if it does not rain soon.

They claim that several districts, not just Cartama, may be forced to bring in water with trucks again if the situation doesn’t improve. The Cartama town hall has been wary of water shortages since 2015 following a dramatic increase in the town’s population and has since urged the authorities to put more water-saving measure in place.

The authorities remarked that while they have been analysing the situation in Cartama, the council must also take out their own measures to help preserve water on top of any initiatives the Environment Department puts in place.

LOW LEVELS: Water supplies are dropping dangerously low

A NUMBER OF Catalan residents were shifting their bank accounts to branches and lenders in other regions of Spain on Monday, hoping to safeguard their savings should Catalonia declare independence and fall out of the European Union.

In Fraga, a rural town just across the border in neighbouring Aragon, dozens BBVA andCaixabankclients arrived early in the morning and queued for hours to open accounts.

The Catalan parliament may unilaterally declare independence as soon as Tuesday following the banned referendum last Monday October 1, which a majority of voters boycotted but that Catalan leaders say produced an “overwhelming majority for secession”.

Such a move would not have any immediate legal effect because it would be blocked by Spain’s constitutional court.

But an eventual break

from Spain would leave Catalonia outside the European Union and the consumer protections it offers - a source of uncertainty and fear in the minds of some depositors.

Even if an independent Catalonia were to persist in using the euro, as nonEU members Kosovo and Montenegro do, its lenders would cease to be supervised by the European Central Bank.

Catalonia’s biggest banks, Banco Sabadell and Caixabank moved their legal bases to other parts of Spain following the October 1 referendum, ensuring they would remain under ECB supervision even if the region does decide to secede.

Caixabank said last week it was transferring its legal base from Barcelona to Valencia to reassure clients in Catalonia that their deposits were safe.

Sabadell says it has moved its legal base to Alicante.

TORREMOLINOS haS opened its first LGBTI information point.

The council-run initiative, which has the support of the andalucian Rainbow Federation, will offer information to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex people. advice will also be available for workers including teachers and police officers.

Open from Monday to Friday in the Department for Social Empowerment, the centre will be staffed by two people who were given training by the andalucian Rainbow Federation. Councillor for Equality and Social Empowerment, aida Blanes, explained, “the measure is part of our plan for equality and for training the council’s staff.”

Meanwhile, Mijas Council last month held its first diversity conference to support the LGTBI community.

The event, which aimed to “move forward in terms of diversity,” brought together groups from across the province and andalucia to learn how public bodies should deal with LGTBI people.

Mari Carmen Carmona, Councillor for Equality, explained, “the main objective of the department is to draw attention to those people who suffer hate crimes because they have a different sexual orientation or because they were born

with a gender that does not belong to them.”

The same council also organised an event to teach local police about dealing with hate crimes. The course was designed to “improve the knowledge and treatment of people who suffer from these types of crimes and teach the state security forces how to deal with them,” according to the council.

The mayor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona explained the initiative, which is particularly aimed at crimes against the LGTBIQ community, was created in collaboration with the andalucian Rainbow Federation, whose president, Gonzalo Serrano, was in charge of teaching the classes.

Councillor Carmona explained, “it is essential to train police or state security forces, as they see hate crimes and discrimination, which is what we will focus on. The Department of Equality is placing special emphasis on the LGTBIQ community because it is most affected by these cases.”

The course taught officers to identify hate crime, learn about which laws regulate these crimes, famous cases, and how to deal with the situation. Gonzalo Serrano explained, “society has changed over the years, and it is much more respectful but it is true that there are still some people who are not. We need to learn to treat people according to how they identify, not what their birth certificate says, because transsexuals feel a particular gender and there are protocols for that we have to follow.”

Mijas Council also aims to create a database revealing the statistics of hate crimes in the municipality.

Councillor Carmona explained, “we want to know how to act in every situation and for that we need to know how many cases we have in Mijas, and thus improve.”

The council points out most victims of hate crimes for not report the offence for fear the police will not help. It explained it hopes the course will allow this perception to change.

Animal sanctuary opens AN ANIMAL sanctuary in Malaga has opened its door to the public to raise funds.

The Malaga Animals Society has hosted a day of activities including children’s workshops, a market, paella, cocktails and tours to help pay for its animals after collecting 1,251 between January and September.

The organisation took in 873 dogs, 291 cats and 89 other types of animals in that period, with food bills reaching more than €5,000 a month according to its president, Carmen Manzano. Veterinary treatment, medicines and staff salaries also add up, brining the charity’s total monthly outgoings to more than €30,000.

Eighty dogs were returned to their owners this year after having their chips scanned, while 153 dogs and 40 cats were rehoused. More than 900 animals remain in the shelter however. Carmen Manzano praised volunteers for their “immense social work” in helping the charity, as well as explaining Malaga was “increasingly empathetic and respectful to animals.”

She also thanked Malaga Council for signing an agreement to help fund the shelter, increasing its funding by 40 per cent to €50,000 a year.

Meanwhile, in August a Torremolinos court granted the town council’s request to take part in the trial of Carmen Marin, former president of charity, Parque Animal.

EXPENSIVE TASTE: The charity spends more than €5,000 per month on food and document forgery, faces a new trial accused of using charity funds to pay for a luxury lifestyle.

Parque Animal was run from 1998 to 2010 by the accused, until she was jailed after Guardia Civil officers found the bodies of dozens of animals in rubbish bins and freezers. At her trial, the judge found Marin had made a “lucrative” business out of the charity, which benefitted from zero

tax, and carried out “culling session” on a “massive and unjustified” scale. Marin currently faces further charges of using the charity’s money to fund luxury travel, restaurant trips and cars.

At her latest trial, the judge said he believed Parque Animal paid out €104,382 to department stores, using the funds to reform and decorate her daughter’s beauty centre. Marin is also accused of using public

Car death ‘not criminal’

NATIONAL POLICE officers have said the death of a man found under a car in Malaga is not suspicious.

The agents have ruled out a crime and instead believe the man’s death was accidental after he was found underneath a car in the Plaza de la Victoria.

Police are still investigating after finding the corpse last week.

A neighbour raised the alarm at around 9.30pm after finding the man underneath a car and initially thinking he was trying to find or fix something. Passing by again a few minutes

later, and seeing the man in the same position, he realised he was not moving and called police.

National and Local police attended the scene, as well as health workers who could do nothing to save the man’s life and declared him dead at the scene.

The police announced in a statement the circumstances surrounding the death are as yet unknown but they believe the man’s death was an accident.

They say they hope the results of an autopsy will establish what caused the man’s death.

BODY: Man’s body found in street not suspicious

by Jemima Roberts A 28-YEAR-OLD Moroccan man has been arrested after stabbing a Guardia Civil officer in Fuengirola.

The agent was allegedly trying to prevent the man intimidating three elderly people who were sitting on a park bench.

The alleged attacker is said to have pulled out a knife when confronted by the officer, stabbing him multiple times in the chest and arms. The accused now faces trial for attempted murder.

The incident occurred at around 9.30pm on the Avenida de Mijas as the officer was on his way to work. The agent is not said to be seriously injured.

In similar events, it was last week revealed an ex-convict is facing 20 years in prison for stabbing a retired police officer in Torremolinos.

The 64-year-old suspect is on trial for allegedly stabbing the 74-old-former National Police Chief Inspector 16 times with a machete. The prosecution is now seeking jail time for murder and 2 for weapons offences.

The accused, who has not denied the allegation, supposedly “surprised” his victim at his home in Torremolinos before killing him. The suspect allegedly waited on the doorstep next to his victim’s body before telling police officers, “he did not keep my secret.” It is not known what secret the man is referring to.

CCTV footage allegedly shows the accused trying to remove the machete from his victim’s body, sustaining a cut to a finger on his right hand which required surgery. Prosecutors are now seeking €150,000 in compensation for the victim’s daughter in addition to jail time.

Today, in a few minutes spent at the keyboard, I can avail myself of much more detailed information from many sources. Last year, I had it in mind to write a book about the european mercenaries drawn into a score of African conflicts as result of Premier Harold MacMillan’s ‘Winds of Change’.

Making a start on The Last Gladiators the book was selling worldwide within 10 days. on another occasion, but never to be repeated, I wrote and published from scratch two books in one month. yes, it was good going but I now enjoy internet aids and online publishing well beyond the wildest dreams of past writers.

I enjoyed reaching a milestone birthday; many don’t make it this far. My family was gathered around me, which was good as I would otherwise have had much to reflect upon. My classmates lived a life that later generations can only read about. our generation was born to parents born before the House of Windsor (1917). I recall a daily Telegraph study that revealed that adolescents of edwardian england were far better educated than were 1980s university students and it is far worse today.

We change too: As an eight-year old I was totally absorbed by jack London’s novel, White Fang. years later I picked up a copy and I was taken aback at the profound scholarship of the story. My working class mother was born in 1911. Before adolescence and highly numerate she could recite a wealth of english poetry and narrate from heart entire passages from the great english classics.

My youthful appetite for dennis Wheatley (1897 – 1977) novels was insatiable. The novelist’s spy and occult mysteries inspired Ian Fleming’s james Bond series.

Wheatley’s novels offered detailed descriptions of the world’s grandest hotels and their clients in such a way that he must surely have stayed as a guest. His millions of fans couldn’t understand was how he could possibly have such detailed knowledge of such places and know world personalities.

You can’t go anywhere it seems, without bumping into someone you know.

Just last week whilst taking a short break away from a stressful life in Villamartin, I was innocently strolling through the delightful main square in Mojacar Pueblo in almeria, having left my good friend Walt dozing on a bench in the sunshine with the other local pensionistas, when a voice boomed out: ‘My God, colin, what are you doing here?’

I was also conscious of another quieter remark from one of the group in question: ‘there goes the neighbourhood’, but I chose to ignore such immaturity.

It turned out to be four acquaintances who reside in Quesada, and who just happened to be booked into a hotel adjacent to the one we were staying in at the nearby playa it transpired.

What a coincidence and what are the chances of that happening we all agreed noisily and at some length.

My snoozing friend had awoken in the meantime and seeing that the flatulent bloke next to him was definitely not his erstwhile companion, had scanned around, spotted me,

and made his way over to join us.

‘I don’t believe it’ he uttered, sounding a lot like a poor man’s Victor Meldrew. ‘What are you lot doing here? and the whole verbal performance of a few moments before was repeated. att this point, Walt’s wife Eileen and the Princess who had been occupied for an hour doing their level best to boost the local economy by blitzing the jewellery, shoe and handbag establishments to within an inch of their lives, had now emerged from the highly original and artfully named Just Shoes. after fter a few seconds adjusting to the unaccustomed light and the absence of cash registers, they focused on us waving and gesturing for them to join us. there here were squeals of delight (or was it dismay) as they recognised our new found companions, and once again the air was abuzz with more declarations of surprise and astonishment and many cor blimey’s, until the whole gamut of incredulous exclamations about coincidences was exhausted.

We were just discussing why there should be so many boarded up shops and closed business premises,

Part I As 2017 comes to a close, the end of October/ November, we will witness the 100th Anniversary of the Russian Revolution, when Imperial Russia collapsed under the leadership of Czar Nicholas 11.

By late 1917, two revolutions had swept through Russia, ending centuries of imperial rule and setting into motion political and social changes that would lead to the formation of the soviet Union and communism.

Diverse social groups demonstrated their discontent with the Russian social and political system. The protests ranged from liberal rhetoric to strikes and student riots and terrorist assassinations. These efforts, coordinated by the Union of Liberation Led by Leon

In the early part of the 1900s the first revolution took place in a dystopian Russia, social unrest had been simmering for decades, Russia was one of the most impoverished countries in Europe with an enormous peasantry and a growing majority of poor industrial workers. The first revolution in 1905, was instrumental in convincing Czar Nicholas11 to attempt a transformation of the Russian government from an autocracy into a Constitutional monarchy especially after their humiliating defeat in the Russian–Japanese (1904/05 war.

Imperial Russia was no match for an industrialised Germany, and Russian casualties were greater than those sustained by any nation in any previous war. Food and fuel shortages continued to plagued Russia as inflation mounted.

Czar Nicholas left the Russian capital of Petrograd (st. Petersburg) in 1915 to take command of the Russian Army.

(Russia had renamed the imperial city in 1914, because the name “st. Petersburg” had sounded too German.)

In her husband’s absence, Czarina Alexandra—an unpopular woman of German ancestry—began firing elected officials. During this time, her controversial advisor, a so called mystic Monk, Grigori Rasputin increased his influence over Russian politics and the Romanov family.

Russian Nobles eager to end Rasputin’s influence murdered him on December 30, 1916. By then, most Russians had lost faith in the failed leadership of the Czar. Government corruption was rampant, the Russian economy remained backward and Nicholas repeatedly dissolved the Duma, the toothless Russian parliament established after the 1905 revolution opposed his will.

Moderates soon joined Russian radical elements in calling for an overthrow of the hapless czar.

Trotsky that culminated in Russian workers protesting against the monarchy led to the bloody sunday massacre of 1905. Hundreds of unarmed protesters were killed or wounded by the czar’s troops in the square outside the Czars winter Palace in st Petersburg on January 22nd, Much of Western Europe viewed Russia as an undeveloped, backwards society. The Russian Empire practiced serfdom—a form of feudalism in which landless peasants were forced to serve the land-owning nobility well into the nineteenth century, this practice had disappeared in most of Western Europe by the end of the Middle Ages, it was only after that Russia abolished serfdom.

The emancipation of serfs would influence the events leading up to the next Revolution by giving peasants more freedom to organize.

Russia had industrialized much later than other countries. When it finally did, around the turn of the 20th century, it brought with it immense social and political changes. Between 1890 and 1910, the population of major Russian cities such as st. Petersburg and Moscow nearly doubled, resulting in overcrowding with people living in destitute conditions.

gan on March 8, 1917 (February 23 on the Julian calendar). Demonstrators clamouring for bread took to the streets of Petrograd. supported by huge crowds of striking industrial workers, the protesters clashed with police but refused to leave the streets.

On March 11th, the troops of the Petrograd army garrison were called out to quell the uprising. In some encounters, the regiments opened fire, killing demonstrators, but the protesters kept to the streets and the troops began to waver.

The Duma formed a provisional government on March 12th. A few days later, Czar Nicholas abdicated the throne, ending centuries of Russian Romanov rule, the leaders of the provisional government, including young Russian lawyer Alexander Kerensky, established a liberal program of rights such as freedom of speech, equality before the law, and the right of unions to organize and strike. They opposed violent social revolution. As minister of war, Kerensky continued the Russian war effort, even though Russian involvement in World War I was enormously unpopular. This further exacerbated Russia’s food supply problems. Unrest continued to grow as peasants looted farms and food riots erupted in the cities.

First and second persons singular Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

In an earlier article we took a step forward by changing some of our important “first person” verb forms into “second person” verb forms, in other words to talk about “you” as well as “I”. We have limited ourselves to just six examples so far, because these are ones that give us a chance to building more interesting sentences by combining them with the infinitive or other verbs to express our needs, desire, intentions and obligations: quieres (you want), vas a (you are going to) necesitas (you need), puedes (you can), tienes que (you have to) te gusta (you like).

We can now make statements about the person we are addressing, for example “Vas a aprender mucho español con Jane” (“You’re going to learn a lot of Spanish with Jane” - just thought I’d slip that one in), or “Puedes dormir más tarde” (“You can sleep later” - I’ll leave you to invent your own context for that one). We could also give someone information in the negative, for example “No tienes que volver mañana” (You don’t have to go back (or come back) tomorrow”.)

Perhaps the second person is used most frequently however to form questions. We can think of lots, using the words we have learnt so far. Here are some questions which perhaps you would like to answer yourself. You can send me the answers if you wish.

The second person or “you” form that I have just demonstrated, is actually a form we use when we are being friendly or familiar with the person we are addressing. I prefer to teach this form first so that students can address each other in a friendly way and to open up the possibility of chatting to neigh-

BIO

James Hartley is an author and teacher who spends his time between Torre del Mar and Madrid. He was born near Liverpool in 1973 but has lived most of his life abroad, in Scotland, Singapore, Syria and Thailand, among other places. This year The Invisible Hand, the first novel in a new series for Young Adults about children who get mixed up in the plots of Shakespeare´s plays was published. The second book, Cold Fire, based on Romeo and Juliet, will be published soon. He has also just published a book about Napoleon´s exile and death on St Helena, The Napoleon Diaries. James lives in Madrid with his wife Ana and their children Carmen, 8, and Matthew, 6.

The Costa del Sol Adventures Costa lay in the dirt and heard a scratching nearby. Was it a rat or a cockroach?

Which would he prefer?

What are you doing lying on the floor in a locked cemetery? He asked himself.

The full moon shone bright as bleached bone. The night was cloudless, starless and silent. Costa didn´t know what day it was: maybe Sunday, from the traffic?

Days didn´t happen to him like they did to other people. Time didn’t work in the same way.

He needed to write his memoirs, settle down, live a normal life.

He heard a grinding squeal from the keyhole in the gate and, a second later, the roar and chug of bike being fired up. Off went the groundsman for his dinner.

Costa sat up and brushed himself off. The air was sweet with the sickly smell of dying flowers. He didn’t like cut flowers: sometimes thought he could hear them screaming.

Death was not so bad, Costa thought. It was dying that was awful.

He quickly found the tomb he´d seen the woman in front of. My god, that woman. Burnt into his mind. Never spoken to her but felt he knew her. Why had he come back?

Costa read the inscription and the dates on the tomb. Who was this? The woman´s father? Brother? She´d looked - what? - maybe mid-thirties, forties? Hard to tell.

Costa took out the fake, stolen ring and held it up to the light. He heard a bestial snuffle from behind his back and turned to see a man mountain eclipsing the moon.

“Hey! There you are,” Costa managed before the monster´s knuckle-duster collided with his cheek.

Birmingham goalkeeper enjoys Costa visit

By Michael Cano WHEN iNvitEd to travel to the Costa del Sol with some of his footballing friends, Birmingham goalkeeper david Stockdale was pleased in his words to “come over as cheerleader.”

He attended the official launch of the new luxury housing development The Heights at La Resina Golf and Country Club invited by friends, Ian Radford chairman of La Sala Group Luke Chambers (Ipswich Town) and Rob Segal (football agent).

The 32-year-old goalkeeper first signed with York City aged just 15 and then moved at 21 to Darlington before being transferred to Fulham

and went on a number of loan deals to such teams as Rotherham United and Leicester City before making his debut for Fulham in 2009.

During this time, he was called up for the England squad although he never played a match for his nation, pulling out of one squad because he was due to marry his long term girlfriend one day before a match with Switzerland.

He found it hard to become first choice for the club and was loaned to Ipswich before being recalled by Fulham, but in 2014 he was transferred to Brighton and Hove Albion, where he helped them gain promotion to the Premier League.

David was the first purchase by Harry Redknapp after he became manager of Birmingham City but following a run of bad results he left the club, becoming an advisor to Yeovil town.

“It was a shame to see Harry leave so quickly but such is football and now we have to concentrate on trying for promotion. First however we need a good run in order to get things moving in the right direction” david said.

Although not as regular a visitor to Costa del Sol, he hopes that he and his wife and three children will be able to spend more time in the area.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAGA is hosting an art exhibition celebrating its economics faculty’s 50th anniversary.

The show, “Economists in art,” is “characterised by the multitude of techniques and disciplines used, and includes works by 10 artists with a common denominator; having graduated from Malaga’s Faculty of Economics and Business Studies,” according to Elena Galan, Councillor for Culture.

Curated by Antonio Sanchez, the show was opened by artist Antonio Suarez Chamorro and the dean of the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences of Malaga, Eugenio Luque. Hosting watercolors, oils, acrylics, collages, mixed media, photographs, pencil drawings or felt-tip pens and sculptures, the exhibition presents several themes.

Artists Blanca Alvarez, Cristina Blasco, Daniel Daaz Godoy, Carlos Barcelo, Magdalena Luque, SuarezChamorro, Michelo Toro, Lola Garcia Crespo, Javier Rico and Chico Repullo have contributed more than 100 works on display until December 17.

Open from 10am to 1.30pm and 5pm to 7.30pm Tuesday to Saturday, the show is in its sixth year, “showing the quantity, quality and diversity of these artists,” according to the show’s curator.

Antonio Sanchez added, “it is a difficult collection to curate as there is no artistic theme beyond the fact the artists are all economists.” He explained a series of talks will accompany the exhibition.

Carrot and pumpkin soup YOU CAN tell it’s autumn when the pumpkins arrive in the markets.

This cheerful, warming soup is so bright that you’ll need to wear your sunglasses when you eat it! Roast all the ingredients first, which really intensifies their flavour and gives the soup a natural sweetness.

• 500g fresh pumpkin • 300g medium carrots • A medium onion • Olive oil • Salt and black pepper • 300ml hot chicken or vegetable stock • Thick cream (optional) • Shredded orange peel (optional) METHOD 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees C. 2. Cut the pumpkin into 2.5cm wedges, removing the seeds but leaving the skin in tact. Peel the carrots and cut in half lengthways. Peel the onion and cut into wedges.

Place the vegetables in a medium sized roasting tin and drizzle with a good slug of olive oil. Get your hands in and swirl everything around so all the

vegetables have an even coating of oil. Adjust the pumpkin wedges so that only the skin is in contact with the bottom of the pan. Season generously with salt and pepper then place in the oven for 35 – 45 minutes until the vegetables are soft and begin to blacken at the edges.

3. Remove the vegetables from the oven and, when the pumpkin wedges are cool enough to handle, peel away the skin and discard. Next you need to liquidize everything using a food processor or a hand held blender. To do this, place all the roasted ingredients together with the hot stock and whiz until smooth. Add a little more stock if the soup seems too thick and pass through a fine sieve if you want a smoother texture 4. Pour the soup into a pan and reheat when ready to serve.

Finish the soup with a blob of thick cream and a few shreds of orange rind.

Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes

Pesto stuffed pork chops INGREDIENTS

3 tablespoons crumbled fet a cheese 2 tablespoons chilled basil pesto 1 tablespoon toasted pine nuts 4 bone-in pork loin chops , 1 1/4 thick 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon dried oregan o 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/4 teaspoon ground thym e 2 tablespoons balsamic vin egar

Double tomato bruschetta

Preparation time – 15 minutes. Cooking time – 7 minutes.

INgrEDIENTS 6 plum tomatoes, chopped, ½ cup sun-dried tomatoes, packed in oil, 3 cloves minced garlic, 1/4 cup olive oil, 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar, 1/4 cup fresh basil, stems removed, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1 French baguette, 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese DIrECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven.

2. In a large bowl, combine the plum tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, basil, salt, and pepper. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes.

3. Cut the baguette into 3/4-inch slices. On a baking sheet, arrange the baguette slices in a single layer.

Bake for 1 to 2 minutes, until slightly brown.

4. Divide the tomato mixture evenly over the baguette slices. Top the slices with mozzarella cheese.

5. Bake for 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

1. Preheat oven to 375ºF(190ºC).

2. Mix feta cheese, basil pesto, and pine nuts in a bowl. Use the tip of a sharp knife to cut a 3-inch slit in the side of each pork chop, 2 inches deep and 1/4-inch away from the bone, to make a pocket for stuffing. Stuff pork

3. Mix black pepper, oregano, garlic, red pepper flakes, and thyme in a small bowl; rub both sides of each chop with the spice mix. Place chops into a shallow baking dish.

4. Bake in the preheated oven until chops are browned and stuffing is hot, about 40 minutes. An instant-read meat thermometer inserted into the centre of the stuffing should read 145ºF (63ºC).

Brush chops with balsamic vinegar and bake until vinegar forms a glaze, another 5 minutes.

Preparation time – 15 minutes. Cooking time – 45 minutes.

Many people presume that all dogs are born swimmers and love the water, but that is definitely not the case. Some breeds, whether due to physical build, temperament, or health issues, may not be too eager to dive into a pool or lake.

Here are some dog breeds that often don’t love swimming: dObeRman These dogs are swift and powerful on land, but their muscular bodies and deep chests can actually work against them in the water. maltese These toy dogs often suffer from weakened tracheas as they age, making it more difficult for them to breathe. basset HOund With their long, stocky bodies and short legs, Basset Hounds aren’t streamlined for swimming. Even for dogs with hair, water temperature is an important consideration. Dogs have a higher normal body temperature than humans—about 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit on average —so water that feels warm to us may feel cool to a dog.

GReYHOund Some Greyhounds may thrive in the water, but as a breed, swimming is generally not their strong point.

daCHsHund With their long bodies and short legs, Dachshunds have to work harder to swim and stay afloat than many other breeds. That’s not to say they can’t learn to swim, but they might not initially feel comfortable in pools or lakes where their feet don’t touch the bottom.

Chirps and trills are how a mother cat tells their kittens to follow them. Aimed at you, it probably means your cat wants you to follow them, usually to their food bowl.

Purring is a sign of contentment (usually). Cats purr whenever they're happy, even while they’re eating.

However, in unneutered and unspayed cats, these sounds are part of mating behaviour. And if your cat is elderly, they may be suffering from a cognitive disorder such as dementia and may howl because they're disoriented.

Chattering, chittering or twittering are the noises your cat makes when they're sitting in the window watching birds or squirrels. Some experts think that this is an exaggeration of the ‘killing bite,’ when a cat grabs their prey by the neck and works their teeth through the bones to snap them.

Guinea piGs’ teeth grow constantly so it’s important to provide them with plenty of hay, grass and wooden toys to wear their teeth down. Check your guinea pigs’ teeth at least once a week and take them to a vet if you are concerned.

A vitamin C deficiency can make your guinea pigs very sick so it is essential that this vitamin is provided in their diet. Give a fresh portion of vitamin C enriched food and fresh, leafy greens daily.

Regularly grooming your guinea pigs can also help to highlight health problems early. Groom long-haired breeds daily to keep their coats in good condition. shorthaired guinea pigs can be groomed weekly. Your guinea pigs’ nails will need checking weekly and clipping when necessary – ask your vet to show you how to do this.

Check your guinea pigs daily and take them to your vet for a thorough health check at least once a year. see your vet immediately if any of your guinea pigs are showing signs of pain, illness or injury e.g. loss of appetite, runny eyes or nose, flystrike, diarrhoea, dry or irritated skin, hair loss or changes in behaviour. settlinG in One of the most stressful times for small animals is when they move house. small animals can carry diseases that can be

triggered when moving. always make sure that new animals are allowed to settle in for a few days before interacting with them so that they are rested and feel secure in their new home.

RinGwORm Ringworm is a fungal infection which can affect guinea pigs causing scaly skin and scabs, usually around the nose and ears. it is also found in a range of animals including cats, horses and farm animals. plenty of vitamin C helps to boost the immune system, which may help to prevent this.

Give your guinea pigs lots of dark green leafy vegetables like cabbage and broccoli and keep their home clean.

Ringworm can also pass to people so wash your hands thoroughly after handling guinea pigs. in people, it looks like a round, red area of skin and advice on treatment can be obtained from a doctor or pharmacist.

HealtH and HYGiene all animals can carry diseases, some of which can pass to people. always clean your hands after handling, feeding your animals, or cleaning their home and equipment and ensure children do the same. always supervise children to ensure they do not put the animals (or objects that animals have been in contact with) near their mouths. it is best to avoid kissing your animals.

Washing machine settings and cycles Different types of clothes require different settings to get everything completely clean, without problems occurring in the washing process, such as colour bleed.

Putting a coloured t-shirt in with white tops for a wash will cause the colour to seep into your pristine white fabrics! This is why it is a good idea to separate, then organise your dirty laundry into their setting categories, before “wash day”. It’ll minimise the risk of any damage or discolouration significantly.

It is also important to always check the care label on your clothes, before putting them into a wash.

The label will tell you which

washing machine settings to use, as well as how to dry the item afterwards.

Every washing machine will display their settings in a slightly different way. It’s always a good idea to check the manual to familiarise yourself with the available settings and cycles. But what do these settings mean and what is happening in each washing cycle?

• Normal – Used for cottons and coloured, mixed fabrics. This cycle uses warm water (30 or 40°C) to wash the clothes, followed by a cold-water rinse, with moderate agitation (machine spin) speeds.

Wood chip This is a budget paper consisting of small pieces of wood sandwiched between two layers of paper. The thicker grades are easy to hang and provide good coverage for rough or uneven surfaces but it is not easy to trim to length and can prove difficult to remove. The thinner grades of wood chip are difficult to hang and are easily torn when wet.

relief This paper is imprinted with a raised pattern and comes in lots of different designs. It is easy to hang and provides good coverage over rough surfaces, again the thinner grades can tear when wet. textured vinyls These have a deep embossed surface pattern that makes them ideal for covering uneven walls, they are also hard wearing which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas such as hallways and children's bedrooms. some have nice delicate hints of colour so don't need painting, but you still have the option to paint over if necessary. These are very easy to hang but are usually a little pricier than relief papers. embossed These are heavy duty wall coverings that will cover uneven surfaces and they are extremely hard wearing. Make sure you read the instructions before buying, as some have special requirements and techniques for hanging, also they are usually more expensive than most wallpapers.

Peugeot joins vehicle scrappage scheme to upgrade to vehicles with the latest safety features and preventative technology – such as Peugeot’s autonomous Active City Brake system, lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control and intelligent speed limit recognition.

All vehicles traded in under the scheme will be scrapped to help remove less safe, higher polluting vehicles from the roads.

Diesel car sales dropping Diesel’s market share in the EU-15 fell from 50.2 per cent to 46.3 per cent of new car registrations in the first half of 2017. In absolute numbers, 152,323 less diesel cars were sold. This drop was offset by an increase in the sale of petrol vehicles. Auto makers caution that this shift to petrol engines with higher CO2 values will pose additional challenges to meeting future CO2 reduction targets.

For the first time since 2009, petrol vehicles have overtaken diesel to become the most sold car type in the EU-15. Petrol vehicles now account for 48.5% of new passenger car sales, up from

45.8 per cent a year ago, which translates into 328,615 extra petrol cars sold year-on-year. Electricallychargeable vehicles accounted for 1.3 per cent of total car sales (a market share which remains stable), hybrids for 2.6 per cent, and cars powered by propane or natural gas for 1.3 per cent.

“Alternative powertrains will undoubtedly play an increasing role in the transport mix, and all European manufacturers are investing heavily in them,” stated ACEA Secretary General Erik Jonnaert. “To this end, more needs to be done to encourage consumers to buy alternatively-powered

vehicles, for instance by putting in place the right incentives and deploying recharging infrastructure across the EU.” “In the meantime, however, as diesel cars emit significantly less CO2 than equivalent petrolpowered vehicles, they will have to be part of the gradual transition to low-carbon vehicles, acting as a ‘bridge’ technology.”

Jonnaert added: “Policy makers need to be aware that a sudden shift from diesel technology to petrol will lead to an increase in CO2 emissions, given that the market penetration of alternative powertrains remains low.”

EVERY YEAR we see the swallows migrating north in the spring and south in the autumn, we experience a similar phenomenon in the bowls world with the arrival of visiting teams to play against local clubs. This year is no exception with teams booked to visit the Miraflores Bowls club from the UK (and this year unusually from Spain!).

It is a sign that the competitive season is getting under way, they have already seen the Andalucian Championships, the league starts on 13th October and have their own Drawn Triples Competition starting on 16th October.

Preparations are in hand for one of the largest entry and longest running competitions on the coast, the Miraflores Open, the event will run from 11th-19th November with prize money of €1000 up for grabs. This year’s sponsors are in place namely Ibex Insurance and Currencies Direct and as usual there will be a prize draw for all competitors spectating or playing on finals day with many attractive prizes including luxury restaurant meals.

One thing that is changing is the format of the competition, traditionally there was men’s and ladies’ singles

events and at one time they were the only club offering this, many clubs now do the same, so this year they have decided to introduce a fours competition alongside the triples and pairs instead and hope this will attract a good entry as it will give bowlers in the Malaga area their only opportunity to enjoy competitive bowling at Miraflores this season (we are not hosting any other competitions).

Entry sheets will be circulated soon or competitors will be able to submit entries by email. More information will be published over the coming weeks.
