Councillor Javier Garcia highlighted the progress achieved by the new council team in improving access to the A7 in the area of Las Chapas, as well as the creation of a third lane between San Pedro Alcantara and Puerto Banus. The politician went on to blast opposition party Izquierda Unida (IU), however, for criticising the project’s budget.

Councillor Garcia said the party “cannot give lessons in executing a budget,” adding, “it is surprising that IU pretends to be a model in this area when the budget execution of some of the areas they managed, such as mobility, did not reach 15 per cent.”

He explained, “the municipal council has got to work from day one and we have met with the delegate for roads of Eastern Andalucia from the Ministry of Development to promote these important projects which have multi-annual budgets and which will be without doubt executed.”

by Richard Johnson MONARCH AIRLINE’S shock decision it was going into administration have affected thousands of UK passengers in Spain.

The British Embassy in Spain has announced it is now helping affected travellers fly home after hundreds of flights have been cancelled. Between five and six Monarch flights were scheduled between the UK and Malaga Airport every day, each carrying around 180 passengers.

Embassy staff are now supervising travellers onto charter planes at Malaga Airport after the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) organised planes to return travellers to Britain.

The British government has described the process of bringing passengers back to the UK as the "largest peacetime repatriation operation,” while Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said the CAA will charter aircrafts until October 15 to fly travellers from Spain to

the UK, “regardless of the nationality of the passengers.”

The British Embassy in Spain has recommended those already here "continue to enjoy their travels, since they can return home when they finish without any additional cost.” However, those still in the UK waiting to come to Spain have been urged "not go to the airport, since all flights have been cancelled.”

The British Government is now encouraging all affected passengers to contact Monarch’s administrators KPMG for compensation or use the ATOL (Air Travel Organisers’ Licence) scheme to reclaim their money. Meanwhile the Spanish Air Safety Agency (AESA) has said Spaniards in the UK who have been affected will have to contact Monarch and the CAA for compensation and should tell the Spanish Embassy in the UK about their situation.

Passengers and travel professionals have expressed their shock after the UK’s

fifth largest airline went into administration at 4am on Monday morning. The president of the Association of Andalucian Travel Agencies, Sergio Garcia, told one publication, “it caught us by surprise.

We did not expect it. Today we have had to relocate customers, some of whom only made their reservations last week.”

One passenger, Dawn Lashley, told a publication she had been given a flight to Manchester but had not been told how to connect to her eventual destination of Birmingham. She told a media outlet, "I've been told that they will inform me in Manchester. I am very angry. I have not received any notice until I get here to the airport. Also, I had another ticket with Monarch to return to Malaga in a few days. I come frequently, for work. I was not expecting this from this airline.”

Spain's High Court said on Tuesday it had granted a U.S. request to extradite Russian citizen Peter Levashov, who is accused of U.S. hacking offences including operating a network of infected computers used by cyber criminals.

Levashov, 36, was arrested while on holiday in Barcelona in April.

U.S. prosecutors have accused him of running a network of more than 100,000 infected devices used by cyber criminals to distribute viruses, ransomware, phishing emails and other spam attacks.

They are seeking a 52-year jail sentence against Levashov, who denies the charges against him.

A Russian news agency reported Levashov, who is fighting extradition, told the Madrid court last week that he had worked for President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party for the last 10 years.

He told the court that investigators in the United States would torture him for information about his political work if he was sent there to face the charges.

"If I go to the U.S., I will die in a year. They want to get information of a military nature and about the United Russia party," RIA quoted him as saying. "I will be tortured, within a year I will be killed, or I will kill myself."

The Spanish court ruling said that Levashov's lawyers had also alleged a political motivation behind the U.S. request for his extradition and that the real reason behind it may be that he was a programmer who might have "hacked the U.S. elections".

All present agreed that the matter of gender violence was a serious problem which had to be tackled by all parties.

by Jemima Roberts A MALAGA Councillor has condemned firemen for not taking part in new training courses while on strike.

Councillor for Security, Mario Cortes, said the men had other ways of taking industrial action “without endangering the safety of residents.” He added, “how do you explain to the public who have asked for flood specialists for years that they will not attend the training sessions a month after the rainy season begins.”

He claimed the firefighters had crossed “a red line they thought they would not cross,” adding unions should, “ask for reason.

These are courses other cities want to join in on. Let’s hope they handle this so that the security of citizens in not affected.” A spokesman for the firemen hit back, however, saying, “we do not want to be criminalised. This is the only opportunity we have to strike without citizens being harmed.”

The city council has since agreed to new work conditions, saying it is prepared to negotiate with the fire men to redraft a document regulating fire workers’ conditions, dating from 1959. The document will see issues including training, shifts and fire stations renegotiated.

Tight race THE Mijas Town Council is currently working against the clock to save the Las Lagunas Sports Center in La Rioja. The club employs around 80 staff and around 6,000 people use the space annually. The centre is in danger of closing due to budget cuts that will remove the club’s funding.

WATER restrictions have been proposed by the Ministry of the Environment in a bid to prevent crops being ruined by drought.

Parks, gardens and pools could be denied water.

Farmers and the Junta de Andalucia have discussed emergency measures to use water from sewage treatment plants to aid irrigation efforts.

Alejandro Clavero, president of the Drafting Committee of the Statutes and Ordinances of the Central Irrigation Board of the Axarquia, highlighted the problem of investment, he said: “The problem is that all of

this leads to investments.

Thousands of litres of water are thrown into the sea every month but putting them at our disposal requires money and time.”

The management of Costa del Sol Occidental, Guadalhorce-Limonero and La Viñuela-Axarquia systems will meet this week with a view to discussing the most effective water-saving measures and how they will be implemented.

The Agrarian Association of Young Farmers in Malaga claim to have called for such measures for more than three years, general secretary, Benjamin Fauli, said: “You can´t take measures

to deal with a drought if they can´t be carried out due to lack of investment. What it does is delay the inevitable when we need an immediate solution.”

Some of the emergency works that the Junta de Andalucia has put in place include the desalination of the Rubite tunnel, the connection of the wells of the Chillar to the supply network of the La Viñuela system and the use of recycled water from VelezMalaga and Algarrobo.

Subtropical crops and trees struggle the most in July, August and September and these vital measures taken have helped to salvage the mango and avocado harvests which were almost lost.

was made into a film, and looks at how new technologies in daily life have changed the way in which couples function.

A sexologist and specialist in sexuality, Tasso will discuss a number of subjects covered in the book, including whether women are more sexually liberated now than in the past.

La Termica opened the sex office due to the important impact it has on modern culture and society.

It is designed as a place where experts and specialists can give workshops and talks on different sexual perspectives and ideas.

The event takes place tonight (Thursday) and entry is free.

A local residents’ association has claimed the current facilities at the town’s health centre are insufficient to deal wth the influx of tourists and visitors during the summer season.

President of La Cala de Mijas Residents’ Association, Francisco Sepulveda, explained the centre is only open between 9am and 2.30pm, tell-

ing one publication, "we do not want more deaths in our town and nearby urbanisations because of a lack of medical assistance.”

He added, "we are going to go through all the ordinary procedures to achieve this priority, in order to protect the most important heritage we have, our lives and our health…” claiming this is not protected “when people in emergency situations at maximum risk (go to a) huge and magnificent health centre dedicated only to administrative tasks and consultations arranged during part-

Cop killer faces 22 years in jail AN EX-CONVICT could die in prison after being accused of killing a retired police officer.

The 64-year-old suspect is on trial for allegedly stabbing the 74-old-former National Police Chief Inspector 16 times with a machete. The prosecution is now seeking 20 years in prison for murder and 2 for weapons offences.

The accused, who has not denied the allegation, supposedly “surprised” his victim at his home in Torremolinos before killing him. The suspect allegedly waited on the doorstep next to his victim’s body before telling police officers, “he did not keep my secret.” It is not known what secret the man is referring to.

Police believe the suspect killed the deceased, who was believed to have been his friend, in a “repeated and surprise” stabbing to the man’s head, neck, thorax, abdomen

and back. When asked by police why he was carrying the 25 centimetre long machete, the man supposedly said he always had it on him.

Witnesses say they saw the accused “loitering” outside the victim’s house on Calle Boscon before stabbing him. One driver honked his horn at the attacker several times to get his attention before giving up and calling the police. Prosecutors now claim the suspect went to his former friend’s house “with the evident purpose of causing him death.”

CCTV footage allegedly shows the accused trying to remove the machete from his victim’s body, sustaining a cut to a finger on his right hand which required surgery.

Prosecutors are now seeking €150,000 in compensation for the victim’s daughter in addition to jail time.

THE Marbella City Council has received criticism for failing to put in measures to stop the recent plague of mosquitoes.

The recent surge in the biting parasites is causing concern among Marbella residents, and has caused schools to recommend that parents apply repellent on their children before bringing them in. The number of people going to the emergency room as a result of mosquito bites has also risen.

According to local media sources, schools asked the city council to take action but were met with the response that it was “impossible to eradicate them.”

The city council’s reaction has prompted the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to demand the authorities immediately launch “an awareness campaign and an urgent action plan to mitigate the plague of mosquitoes “.

PSOE councillor Ana Leschiera remarked the phenomenon is not uncommon given the time of the year and recent high temperatures, but agreed the council must act “as quickly as possible” to prevent it from becoming a problem for locals.

She stated that special measures should be put around swimming pools, which are the responsibility of the council, and citizens must be informed of the dangers of being in areas that have a high-concentration of water.

Leschiera also emphasised the importance of an awareness campaign and has advised household to get rid of containers that accumulate water in homes and gardens.

Crocodiles come to the Costa del Sol THE ARTIFICIAL lake in Marbella’s La Represa park has seen an unusual addition take up residence, an alligator garfish.

Experts are baffled how the non-native fish came to the lake and are working on the assumption the animal was bought online and moved to the area after it grew in length. The fish will now be transferred to the Fuengirola Bioparc aquarium.

Native to North America and the Caribbean, the animal can grow up to 3 metres long in the wild and eats frogs and other small fish, although it poses no threat to humans.

Despite the risk to local ecosystems of releasing crocodilefish into the wild, the animal is easily available online. An employee at specialist fish shop Acuario Malaga told one publication, “it is a fish like any other. They are sold legally in our country, in fact we sell them.”

The long-nosed fish, which has two rows of teeth in its upper jaw, can be difficult to maintain, however, growing vastly over the course of their lives. Starting out at around between 6 to 15 centimetres long, they reach around 1 metre in length in captivity, needing a 600 litre tank of water to contain them. Rather than buy an appropriate-sized tank, some owners choose to

release the fish into the wild, which is how experts believe this latest alligator garfish found its way into La Represa’s.

Although the fish are omnivorous, Acuario Malaga say the fish can be given commercial fish food and even dead fish from a fishmonger.

Costing from €13 online, although the fish can be bought legally, experts say potential alligator garfish keepers should be prepared for them to grow in length and that releasing them into a non-native environment can disturb delicate ecosystems.

Preventing domestic abuse

by Jemima Roberts MIJAS COUNCIL has announced a project to prevent gender violence.

The initiative, titled Make love worth it, is being taught as a workshop in local school IES La Vega de Mijas with the aim of promoting and raising awareness for gender equality education from a gender perspective.

The Councillor for Youth, Tamara Vera, visited the school where the course was being taught over a week. She explained the workshop seeks to raise awareness among young people about possible discrimination, encourage the change of beliefs and attitudes, as well as promote teamwork, volunteering and creativity.

Councillor Vera explained, the Department of Youth is in constant contact with other administrations to offer Mijas as many resources as possible to benefit of our young people," adding the workshops, "are

part of the council’s work throughout the year to prevent domestic abuse and promote respectful and healthy relationships.”

The workshop will focus on the concept of romantic love, gender roles, types of gender violence, types of relationships, emotional education, self-esteem, conflict resolution and nonviolent communication. One of the group’s monitors, Sole Enciso, explained, "this time we are focussing on positive aspects and letting someone know what they want in a relationship and what a healthy relationship is." She added, "one of the aspects which we work most on is jealousy, how to identify it and understanding it is not a good thing, as well as aspects such as the right to privacy and social networks, so relevant today among young people.”

Tamara Vera sits in on a workshop and "keep in touch with the department for information on healthy leisure activities,” adding, “prevention is essential to eradicating domestic abuse, especially amongst young people.”

The class is not the only one teaching tolerance in Mijas. The council has put on two courses promoting LGTBI rights in the

last several weeks, one aimed at council workers and the other at police officers.

Mari Carmen Carmona, Councillor for Equality, explained, “the main objective of the department is to draw attention to those people who suffer hate crimes because they have a different sexual orientation or because they were

born with a gender that does not belong to them.” She added, "it is essential to train police or state security forces, as they see hate crimes and discrimination, which is what we will focus on. The Department of Equality is placing special emphasis on the LGTBIQ community because it is most affected by these cases.”

POLICE are investigating after finding a dead body under a car in Malaga’s Plaza de la Victoria.

A neighbour raised the alarm after finding the man underneath a car and initially thinking he was trying to find or fix something. Passing by again a few minutes later, and seeing the man in the same position, he realised he was not moving and called police.

National and Local police attended the scene, as well as health workers who declared the man dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the death are as yet unknown.

Road rage Firemen claimed the smoke cloud was wide and dense

by Pippa Harris AN 87-YEAR-OLD man has died in a house fire in Torremolinos.

Two others were affected by the blaze, with one 77-year-old woman remaining in a serious condition in hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters attended the fire after several neighbours raised the alarm at around 9am. Finding the apartment’s doorway blocked, the rescue workers were forced to smash a window to gain

entry. Inside they found a 77-year-old woman lying on the floor conscious and moved her to an ambulance. Searching the property’s rooms, firemen found the breathing but unconscious 87-year-old man lying in bed. Paramedics performed CPR before transferring the man to the Carlos Haya Hospital where he later died.

One Local Police officer was also received medical attention after suffering from smoke inhalation and dizziness when National and Local police went to the property to cordon off the area. The 43-year-old officer was

helping workers when he began to feel it, according to media reports.

Firefighters told one publication the blaze originated from one of the property’s rooms although they are still uncertain what caused the fire. According to the firemen involved, although the flames were small, the cloud of smoke “was very wide and dense.” Police are now investigating the cause of the fire.

Nine firefighters carried out the rescue operation, using two vehicles and a long-length ladder to extinguish the fire.

THE mayor of Alhaurin de la Torre has accused the Andalusian authorities of downsizing the town’s new access road.

Allegedly the large access road that was originally planned, and was estimated to cost around €36 million to complete, has been reduced to a “mini road” after the Housing and Development Department scaled back the size of the project.

De la Torre added that those in charge have reduced the budget by 64 per cent which will mean many of the town’s neighbourhoods are excluded

from the development.

The Minister of Housing and Development, Felipe Lopez, announced last week that €13 million will be now invested in the project - which has thrown all previous plans into confusion.

De la Torre laments that no work has been carried out on the developments in the eight years since the original plans were authorised and fears that the council will have to reapply for the original road project, even though it was already approved, as it is not clear what new plans the regional authorities have in place.

Autumn cleaning

by Pippa Harris MARBELLA’S COUNCIL has undertaken a project to clean up the muncipality’s playgrounds.

The plan will cover 34 children's playgrounds and Councillor for Cleaning, Diego Lopez, explained, "we are cleaning with non-harmful disinfectants and pressure hoses,” adding, “we intend to carry out the work regularly,” and explained, “over the last two years they had not been properly cleaned which poses a risk to the children using them.”

The playgrounds being cleaned are located in Vigil de Quiñones, Nagueles, La Constitucion, Terrazas del Puerto, Edifico Belmonsa, La Represa, Miraflores, La Torrecilla, Xarblanca, Maria Auxiliadora College, River Huelo, Las Albarizas, Corazon Sagrada, Manuel de Falla, San Enrique, Calle Los Naranjos, Avenida Jose Iturbi, Calle Vazquez Clavel, Calle Antonio Lizarza, I and II Bullring, El Calvario, El Capricho, Bello Horizonte, La Patera , V Centenario, La Torrecilla, Calle Salduba, Calle Manuel de Falla, Calle Fernan-

do VII and Calle Juanar.

Last month, alleged poor conditions at a playground in Torremolinos prompted outrage from locals after three people were injured when a swing collapsed in La Bateria Park.

Two girls and one woman were hurt in the incident, which left one of the girls in hospital with two leg injuries, while the other girl, aged 5, was treated for back pain. Her mother was hit on the arm as she tried to stop the structure falling on the children and is now unable to move three of her fingers.

The woman explained, "it was a good thing I had instinctively put my arm up because the bar went directly towards the girls' head.”

Police tape now seals off the swing-set while the girl’s mother says she is considering denouncing the town hall, claiming the set "was rotten inside", adding, "after it came down we could see the condition of it and it is a shame. If I had known before I would not have taken my daughter to the park.”

The council, however, claim

Reportedly there are no signs in parks in Torremolinos warning of

weight limits for the rides.

A trampoline was also sealed off by police, leaving the condition of several children’s parks up for debate at the council’s next meeting amid claims of splinters, rust and uneven ground. Margarita del Cid, a spokeswoman for the Partido Popular (PP), said the "the deterioration

of the parks" and says her party will ask "again a comprehensive review of all elements" of the facilities.

She claimed municipal workers "have on many occasions asked for tools to carry out the necessary work to keep the parks in perfect condition but have not received a reply.”

A SPATE of dog poisonings on the Costa del Sol continues with more than 10 dying in a week.

One dog was killed after eating poison in a playground in La Campana, forcing police to close the park. The play area on Avenida Miguel de Cervantes is used by residents with and without pets, as well as children.

One resident, Francisco Montijano, told a publication, “in addition to animals, it could affect some of the children who play there every day.” Other neighbours told media outlets the poison comes in a “barely perceptible” liquid form, and have speculated the poison may have been left in three locations.

Police have collected samples of the liquid but residents remain concerned, telling one publication, “we are afraid to take our dogs out and have to walk them with our eyes peeled to stop them from going into the undergrowth and eating something which could kill them.” Mr Montijano added, “we are checking the area on a daily basis to make our walks safe we but are frightened someone will start spreading the poison further afield.”

In July it was revealed The Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (Seprona) was investigating the appearance of

pesticides disguised as dog treats around Torremolinos.

The officers warned the crime, which was reported by residents, carries a fine of up to €300,000 and up to two years in prison. Police also warned dog and cat owners the poison, which has been strategically placed in areas frequented by

animals, could be lethal and also poses a threat to children.

Two of the pesticides used, aldicarb and carbofuran, are banned by the European Union due to the danger they pose to public health, according to the Ministry for the Environment, while Torremolinos Council warned the colourful chemical

which comes in a powder form could look like candy to children.

Aldicarb, which has been banned since 2007, is described as a “deadly weapon” by animal activists as it stops the respiratory system, while carbofuran is one of the deadliest pesticides and can kill a bird with a single grain.

An animal charity, Animal Liberation, has said there is often a rise in poisonings in residential coastal areas during the summer months, with El Pinillo being one of the worst affected. They commented, “the pools open and some cats start to go near them. Dogs also come out more and people complaining.” The Guardia Civil have also criticised people for putting sulphur down on roads in an effort to keep animals away, saying it is illegal, as well as “useless, toxic, dangerous and polluting.”

The authorities recommend anyone finding a poisoned animal to not touch it and instead call the police or Seprona and ask for the area to be cleaned in case of further poison. The Ministry of the Environment has also collaborated with Seprona to launch the Andalucian Strategy Against Poison (EAV) to raise “social awareness and encourage the prevention of poison use as well as promoting police action.”

by Michael Cano THE Marbella International Film Festival was formally unveiled at the Marbella Town Hall by representatives of the council and organisers.

Councillor for Nueva Andalucía, Cristóbal Garre, the head of Culture and Education of Marbella Council, Carmen Díaz, the director of the festival, Mac Chakaveh, and the president of the Goya Theatre Group, Luis Miguel Martín discussed all of the planned events.

The programme opened last Wednesday but there will be plenty of films to see (as well as celebrities to spot) with a range of films being shown in two of the comfortable Teatro Goya Banus screening rooms.

The director of the festival thanked the

support of the City Council and the Goya Theatre Group confirming that entries had come in from the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Iran, Argentina, Japan, India, Ukraine, Brazil, Austria, Holland, Italy and Georgia. Tickets, which range between €8 and €15, may be purchased on the website www.marbellafilm.com.

Friday and Saturday sees visits from several popular artists including Craig Fairbrass, star of the film Rise of the Footsoldier 3, much of which was shot in Marbella. Also due to appear is Timothy Spall, known for many films, most recently Turner and the Harry Potter franchise whose one man 16 character film Stanley, Man of Variety will be presented as well as Calum Best, who will present a documentary about his father, footballer George Best.

MIJAS COUNCIL has extended its La Muralla botanical route by adding more than 140 new types of plants.

The Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Roy Perez, visited the area to see the new additions and the results of reforming the parks’ information mural as well as the new information panels.

Following the park’s expansion, 141 types of plant cover the space, 55 further than before the works, with examples from every continent. Councillor Perez encouraged all residents and tourists to visit the are, explaining, “we have completely renovated

the park by increasing our catalogue of species, as well as impriving our information points and explanatory mural in front of the bullring.”

New information boards tell visitors the origins and scientific names of the plants giving nature-lovers an educational outing.

Councillor Perez said the space was “recommended for those who are fond of botany but also for all people who want to enjoy this unique enclave.”

The route expands on the municipality’s botanical heritage and reflects the town hall’s commitment to preserving its nature and leisure spaces, according to

the council. Councillor Perez adds, “among the objectives of the department is this expansion of the botanical heritage of the municipality ensuring that nature is integrated into all areas around Mijas,” emphasising, “on the recommendations of technicians we have looked for species whose needs and maintenance are as similar as possible to our native plants while also having species from all continents.”

The councillor concluded by encouraging all locals and visitors, “to visit this route which is sure to Roy Perez: surprise them and to get shows off to know the municipality the new mural through its natural spaces.”

Popular Indie Band in Costa del Sol debut

by Michael Cano WHEN YOU grow up in Liverpool with your mother a member of the Small Faces fan club and professional musician uncles playing with bands like Eurythmics, your future course is set.

Terry Shaughnessy started playing drums without any lessons apart from banging on his mother’s pots and pans in the kitchen and hung around with the musician relatives, learning about music, performance and the guitar.

He describes himself as a singer songwriter and producer who performs with a band The Universal when on tour but plays all instruments and records himself when writing and then passes the result to the band members.

20 months ago, he decided that he needed more than a small UK studio and with his wife, moved to Coin where he could afford a bigger property on the Campo to rehearse and record without bothering the neighbours.

As the band had been obtaining a lot of bookings at European festivals, he didn’t need to be based in the UK anymore and when the time comes to rehearse new material, then he flies back to the UK as he has just done.

Modern technology makes it much easier to record from a distance and because Terry and the band have been together for so long, they can quickly pick up new numbers and work on updating old favourites.

There is no doubt that this is a cheerful, bouncy guy in his mid-thirties who says “We all leave our egos at the door when we work together. I may be writing the songs and music but my ego isn’t allowed to rule either.”

When asked to describe his music, his response is “I have many influences but whilst we don’t like to be put

in a box, we are playing indie rock and sound a lot like ourselves but also a little like Ryan Adams, Foo Fighters and my absolute favourite Neil Finn (formerly of Crowded House and Split Enz).”

The Universal’s latest single Volcano entered the iTunes charts at number 15 and peaked at number 9 and is available through all of the internet platforms as well as on CD, with the video included on YouTube.

Terry’s wife introduced him to the owners of promotion agency Diamonds and Pearls and he helped out by looking after the sound at their recent Lamar concert in Estepona and it was then a natural decision for them to promote The Universal in their first ever concert on the Costa del Sol which takes place tomorrow(Saturday) in Estepona.

The band is flying over from the UK to join up with Terry who returned earlier this week and they will be accompanied an interesting line up of former Belle Star Jennie Matthias and local 15-year-old singer songwriter Amalia Estradas as backing singers and Benalmadena based classical violinist Alison Harling.

The performance which will include DJ Steve Goodey will be held at the Teatro Auditorio Felipe VI in Estepona with doors opening at 8pm.

Tickets cost €25 each and may be obtained from the Auditorium or by calling 600 873 147 or 722 120 065.

The last time I saw scenes like the recent ones in Barcelona, was old news footage from Berlin filmed in the late 30s. Policemen and soldiers wearing swastikas on their arms, sacking shops and business office’s, piled books up and set light to them. They herded people like animals, away from government offices to eradicate themselves of Hitler’s opposition; often using excessive force, they beat people with clubs and rifle butts, as blood flowed freely.

Not quite so bad, the activity of the guarda civil swooping on the pro-independence offices to seize papers and funds pledging support for the referendum campaign in Barcelona. Now please don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has any disposition of being another Hitler, or that his Government is Nazi orientated, however I am slightly worried about what is going on In Catalonia with the planned but banned referendum on October the 1st.

What I don’t understand is why the European Union have not intervened? The European Union legal system are the main instigators of the human rights laws. Certainly, in Britain when Scotland asked for a referendum Britain complied, the referendum was held, and Scotland voted against independence.

Neither am I defending the Catalonia Government rights to hold a referendum or against it, as it is supposedly against the Spanish constitutional laws, however the Catalonian’s should not have their human rights banned by Spain’s total denial of the Catalonians peoples wishes.

Recently, 14 officials and business owners were arrested after court orders, not before 4,000 extra Guardia Civil officers that had been drafted in seized 10 million voting slips.

With street scenes that are reminiscent of unstable South American countries, such as recent events in Venezuela, the populace of Barcelona turn out to demonstrate against the Guardia Civil raids. Thousands of Catalonians waving regional flags and chanting slogans against the Rajoy Government while police continued their raids on the offices of the regional economy ministry. The searches continued through the night as protesters attempted to block the exit of Guardia Civil officers as they tried to leave the offices, some of police vehicles were damaged.

Catalonia and Spain have been at odds for more than 500 years, When Franco died, Catalan nationalism was revived and eventually Catalonia was granted autonomy again under the 1978 constitution. A 2006 statute granted even greater powers, boosting Catalonia’s financial clout and describing it as a Nation, however Spain’s Constitutional court reversed much of the statute in 2010 this angered the regional authorities greatly.

The historic problem results from, as one Spanish man told me “Catalonia is rich, probably the richest region in Spain, but they don’t want to share their wealth with the poorer people.”

Many protesters claim that Rajoy has banned the referendum owing to his own political machinations, But Rajoy says the banning was on the orders of the judge and had nothing to do with the Spanish Government, Rajoy went on to say, “that he doesn’t have to explain the rules of the law.”

The Catalan President Carles Puigdemont insists “that no court or government body can suspend his government” and says Spain has de facto suspended the self-government of Catalonia and has applied a de facto state of emergency.”

This as Pro-independence MPs, walked out of the debating chamber in disgust, and the Pro-left wing Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said he was against the arrests and sugested the Government was taking political prisoners.

Prime Minister Rajoy continued to say, ‘the Catalonians cannot hold a referendum, it was never legal or legitimate, it was just a pipe dream, it had been banned by the Spanish courts and it is against the constitution”, last week over 700 pro-independence local mayors were placed under house arrest for allegedly using council’s resources to arrange votes.

So now it is back to the European Union and their Human Rights laws. Is the E.U. non-interference denying the Catalonian People of voting, YES. Have the E.U. asked the Spanish government about how they feel on denying the Catalonia’s human rights laws? NO, The E.U. believe the Spanish government have the right to do what they like in their own country as it does not contravene the E.U. laws. However, those scenes of the police raids in Barcelona of the guarda civil and the protesters facing up to each other are reminiscent of mid-late 1930’s Berlin, and I thought the news footage from Barcelona was very unsettling.

During a BBC Question Time debate, Julia HartleyBrewer parried verbal blows with presenter David Dimbleby. The broadcaster said she was used to being the only Brexiter on the show.

The liberal-left caucus claim that Nigel Farage constantly appears. In fact, the celebrated Brexiter has been invited once on the 42 programmes since the referendum was held. Since Brexit the Remain panellists have been outnumbered by Leavers 137 – 72.

British media spin and bias is notorious. Insider Greg Dyke in his autobiography says; “When it

came to discussing the war in Iraq staff found it so difficult to find any member of the public prepared to speak in favour that they ended up planting people in the (Question Time) audience.” The former BBC Director-General is far from alone. Matthew Pariss was voted British Press Awards Columnist of the Year. On April 21, 1996, the Daily Mail columnist was damning in his criticism of television debates. “Television lies.

All television lies. It lies persistently, instinctively and by habit. Everyone involved lies. A culture of mendacity surrounds the medium and those who work there live it, breathe it and prosper by it. I know of no area of public life, no, not even politics, more saturated by a professional cynicism. If you want a word that takes you to the core of it, I would offer ‘rigged’.

It is dishonest for the presenter to imply that the pundit in the chair is free to offer any opinion, when the truth is that 50 pundits were telephoned but only the fellow prepared to offer the requisite opinion was invited?”

Gerry Hines is an unashamed publicist for the racial diversity collective. The former BBC Programme Organiser penned a col-

umn for Race Today, which is published by the Institute of Race Relations.

“Newspapers have to sell in order to live, so do commercial T.V. That leaves the British Broadcasting Corporation as the only truly public service medium in this country disseminating information, entertainment, and, in the case of race relations propaganda.

We are unashamed to admit it is what we are doing.”

His comment would have pleased the aforementioned Greg Dyke infamous for his offensive remark that “The BBC is hideously White.” June 21. 2007.

Most fair minded people consider much of British media as hideously biased. I would suggest a future BBC Question Time panel to be independently selected. The topic I suggest, should a blatantly biased corporation be funded by the taxpayers.

“You’re grumpy this week”, the Princess admonished me yesterday, and she was right, It’s been one of those weeks when little annoyances that would normally have passed over my head have for some reason, stopped off and got up my nose.

I cut my finger whilst chopping some onions; not an unheard of occurrence.

I put a plaster on to the injured finger, only to have it slide off later when I washed my hands. So I hurriedly applied another.

I reckon I had to repeat this procedure at least five further times during the day, so the obvious question is: why don’t they make all plasters waterproof?

Then it was the European football on TV. Players crossing themselves before the game with the ref. doing the same at the final whistle. But only when he knew the cameras were on him I noticed.

It seems God has become a fashion icon.

I realise that the average professional footballer is not noted for his brain capacity, but puleese, could you be more original in celebrating a goal. Here’s an idea, try shaking hands with your team mates. How refreshing that would be.

Then there was some idiot being interviewed in Oxfordshire about Brexit (how sick I

am of that word).

What is this nonsense where it seems fashionable to abandon the Queens English in favour of some quasi Jamaican dialect?

It’s great if you come from that exotic region, but ridiculous if you are a natural blonde and born in Banbury.

Dey has got dis weird way of walkin’ too, sorta like a swagga dat da Noo Yawk pimps do, know what ah meen. An dey wave dhere hans abaht like dey is all rappers or sumfin, innit.

To cap it all, I bought a new shirt – one of the boxed jobs, not something off the rail.

Look you guys, this is the 21st century, could you please stop putting those damned pins in everywhere, because having carefully removed them all, or so you think, there’s always one lurking in some dark place, painfully revealing itself when you slip the shirt on.

Back to the TV and my eyes were like revolving cherries on a one-arm-bandit when trying to spot the actors names after a particularly good movie. Why bother to roll the credits if you have to have high speed eyeballs like Clark Kent in order to read that stuff?

I need a cold shower.

Well, who would have thought that in a basic Spanish course we would spend so much time on the meaning of the word lo? It’s one of those fiddly little words that give us so much trouble. In fact if we could abolish any word from Spanish that contained two letters or less, we poor English speakers would be a lot happier!

So, the task at hand today is to look at the word lo when it means “it”, and how it can be tacked on to the end of other words. Lo meaning “it” can stand on its own in many sentences, but they are a bit more complicated to explain, so for now we will just see how it can be linked onto the end of the infinitive of verbs. After that we will see how la, los and las can work in the same way, and what they mean.

In the last article we saw the following sentences: Quiero beberlo “I want to drink it”; Necesito limpiarlo “I need to clean it” and Puedo verlo “I can see it”.

Lo here is replacing something that it already understood. Its grammatical label is a “pronoun”, something that goes instead of a noun. For example if we say: “I want to drink it”, the speaker and listener must already know what “it” stands for otherwise it doesn’t make sense.

In fact the full sentence was “Quiero beber el vino” I want to drink the wine.

Now then, what I haven’t yet told you is that lo in fact refers to things that are masculine and singular (oh no, here we go again!). El vino is a masculine singular word, which is why lo is the correct pronoun to replace it. If we wish to say “it” about something that is feminine and singular, we use the word la.

Here are two examples which should make this clear.

Voy a cocinar la tortilla “I’m going to cook the tortilla” Voy a cocinarla “I’m going to cook it”.

No puedo cerrar la ventana “I can’t close the window” No puedo cerrarla

“I can’t close it”.

And to complete this tale, we can now look briefly at how to make the plural of “it”, that is “them”, using los when referring to masculine plural and las for feminine plural. Again clear examples ought to do the trick.

Me gusta ver las películas “I like watching the films” Me gusta verlas “I like watching them” ¿Necesito firmar los papeles?

“Do I need to sign the papers?” ¿Necesito firmarlos?

“Do I need to sign them?”

I think that is all relatively easy to understand in theory. The big challenge of course is remembering when you’re speaking whether what you are referring to is masculine or feminine, or even singular or plural. This actually takes all of us a very long time and we make plenty of mistakes along the way. You should never worry about this as you will always be understood by using the masculine form lo. Remember the whole point is that both speaker and listener already know what is being referred to!

The Costa del Sol Adventures The only jeweller Costa trusted owned a shop in the old town in Marbella.

To get there he drove to his flat in Malaga and picked up the car. A quick shower and an hour later he was walking through the tinkling door of Emile´s store.

Jenna, Emile´s wife, who made the amber and amethyst jewellery they sold out front, gave Costa a double take. “Oh! It´s you. I didn´t recognise you.” She sighed.

“I never recognise you!”

“The day you do, I´m done. Is Emile in?”

A moment later a thin, tanned, pointy-bearded face appeared through the beads.

“Come, come.”

Emile asked no questions. He bent and examined the jewel after expertly prising it from its golden bed. “It´s a fake,” he declared, holding it up by the culet.

“Sure?”

“Has the stamp on the ring of an old friend of mine from Aix-en-Provence. Always a bad ´un.”

“Sold to a well-known guy, they told me. Hollywood figure.” Costa pocketed the ring and left a note on the counter.

“Yes, I know,” Emile replied, folding up his glasses and the money. “But, you know, Costa, those people sell lies for a living. This type of thing is bound to happen. Karma, you know. Karma, my friend.”

Costa retraced his steps. He called Dan Sanchéz on the way back down the motorway. The ring´s a fake, he said. Call Levy and tell him.

“He´ll want to meet you,” Sanchez replied. “Check you´ve got proof.”

“I´ll meet him at the Molino in Lagos tomorrow morning at first light.”

“He´ll want to meet you before that, Costa. Come to Malaga. He has offices here.”

“Tomorrow. The Molino in Lagos. First light. Beers on me.”

An hour later, as the sun went down, Costa walked back into the cemetery at Torre del Mar.

A small charity which has helped thousands

by Michael Cano POSITIVELY PINK is a Mijas based charity set up to raise the necessary funds to provide free breast screening programmes for women who live on the Costa del Sol. Funds however are the perennial problem for Lorraine Palmer of El Oceano Hotel who set up Positively Pink after suffering a fright more than 10 years ago when she thought that she had herself developed breast cancer.

Happily this was not the case but despite the fact that she had private health insurance, it took several weeks to organise the screening and then additional weeks waiting for the results.

The stress that she, her family and others went through just imagining the worst whilst waiting for the results made her vow that she would do all that she could to make life easier for those in a similar situation and that spurred her on to set up Positively Pink.

It is a small charity that can make a big difference but can only help if it has the money to do so and their Gala Dinner which is being held next Thursday at El Oceano Hotel is the main fund raiser.

This year their target is to raise more than the previous record of €30,000, all of which is devoted to health checks and support of those who are found to be positive.

Although the service is aimed primarily at the British expatriate community, as long as there are funds available, no-one is turned away but this is only possible if the local community gets behind the charity and donates funds.

The Gala Dinner promises to be a really exciting event this year with music and entertainment as well as a high quality three course meal with wine and soft drinks on offer and there are still a few tickets left at a cost of €120 per person if readers wish to become involved.

A significant proportion of the ticket price goes to the charity, although the hotel needs to cover its costs of all of the food and drink plus the staff.

The celebrity guest who will fly in specially (but not from Luton Airport) is actress Lorraine Chase who will be conducting a special auction and the emphasis is on a combination of fun and charitable support.

Autumn schedule

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE has announced its October events’ schedule.

On Monday October 9, a course on opera begins at Lux Mundi in room B3-R4. Group leader Pat Shaw advises those planning to join his group screenings of opera and ballets will be shown at Cinesur until February 2018 and full information and tickets can be found at www.cinesur.com.

He explained while “such big screen shows can in no way replace the experience of attending a ‘live’ show, they have proved extremely popular worldwide and attending some would undoubtedly enhance Group Members’ enjoyment and knowledge of both Opera and Ballet.”

Seven meetings of the course are scheduled for the autumn term, with no classes on October 30 or November 6 and none after December 4 until January 8.

A questionnaire will be forwarded to students shortly after the end of the course to gauge demand for future courses on opera, ballet and theatre.

A weekly questionnaire will also be emailed to all enrolled students after each class to deepend knowledge and appreciation of this art form.

Students are encouraged to give their answers to the course leader at the earliest possible opportunity and requested to be on time for each session. DVD screenings will start at 11am at every meeting. The DVD shown in the first Class is about an American Soprano, the second about a male Spanish Singer and the third about a female Greek Singer.

Other upcoming University of the Third Age talks include a lecture on one of China’s largest contributions to science and technology, gunpowder, on October 11 at Lux Mundi room B3-R4 from 11am to 12.30pm. The same venue will be hosting a talk on the history of rail transport in Andalucia on October 17 from 11am to 12.30pm, while a debating group will be meeting on Wednesdays from 1pm to 2.30pm in room 3-2.

On Wednesday mornings a series of talks on science and technology will take place at Lux Mundi room B3-R4,

beginning with a lecture on science and the law on October 25, which will explore how science is used to convict and sentence offenders.

The group’s president, Brian Robinson, explained the organisation had had a successful summer with the addition of a new social group made up mainly by residents and hosted by Vice President Rob Edwards. A new website has also be launched at http://u3afuengirolacostadelsol.com/ and an expanded programme of courses and events are planned.

Brian sent a message of thanks to everyone who had a hand in two successful registration days. More than 260 people registered for courses in just two days and it looks like membership will exceed last year’s record number.

Access to the group’s news, Prospectus, forms and programmes of events and courses are available via Facebook and the new website. Brian explained, “a warm welcome awaits those who have already joined and those who will do so in the coming weeks.”

Master class

MIJAS COUNCIL has opened registration for its acting workshops at the Las Lagunas House of Culture.

Between 10 and 20 students will be able to participate free of charge in the workshop, which was announced by Councillor for Culture, Fuensanta Lima and the classes’ teacher, Andres Galvez.

Councillor Lima explained, “we continue to focus on offering quality courses to the residents of Mijas, this time with a workshop aiming to give the necessary skills to actors and actresses in areas such as body language and other basic aspects of an audio-visual shoot.” She added the workshop, “also responds to the great interest in the world of cinema in our town, exploring the key aspects of making a film.”

The course will focus on body language, speech and specific gestures adapted to cinema, memorising scripts, the recording of sequences and editing over 60 hours of classes taught by actor, producer and theatrical instructor Andres Galvez. He explained, “The workshop is aimed at young people and adults who have some kind of knowledge of the world of cinema or theatre or who want to start out in this area. It will be mainly practical and will offer the opportunity to work on different sequences which we will record and can be taken away on a USB stick.”

The workshop will be held at the House of Culture in Las Lagunas on Tuesdays from 8 pm to 10 pm and Thursdays from 5 pm to 10 pm. Applicants can register for the workshop, which will be held from October 17 to December 5, by telephone on 952 59 03 80 or by email to cultura@mijas.es.

How do I practise mindfulness?

Mindfulness is available to us in every moment, whether through meditations and body scans, or mindful moment practices like taking time to pause and breathe when the phone rings instead of rushing to answer it.

The basics of mindfulness practice Mindfulness helps us put some space between ourselves and our reactions, breaking down our conditioned responses. Here’s how to tune into mindfulness throughout the day: 1. Set aside some time. You don’t need a meditation cushion or bench, or any sort of special equipment to access your mindfulness skills—but you do need to set aside some time and space.

2. Observe the present moment as it is.

The aim of mindfulness is not quieting the mind, or attempting to achieve a state of eternal calm. The goal is simple: we’re aiming to pay attention to the present moment, without judgement.

Easier said than done, we know.

3. Let your judgments roll by. When

That’s the practice. It’s often been said that it’s very simple, but it’s not necessarily easy. The work is to just keep doing it. Results will accrue.

Does rubbing fruit on your teeth remove stains?

Strawberries, lemons, even banana peels - we've heard of people reaching for the fruit bowl in an effort to get a shiny smile, but does it work? No. Not only will this not remove stains, but it will also seriously damage your teeth. Fruit acids and acids in the other foods we eat and drink cause tooth enamel

to wear away and teeth can become discoloured and yellow as a result. Brushing after a meal will help, but avoid doing so for 20 minutes after consuming acidic foods.

Acid softens your enamel, and brushing too soon will only speed up tooth wear before the enamel has time to settle again.

Active middle aged to stay active ACCORDING TO a new online study published by the British Medical Journal, active middleaged men are likely to stay active into old age.

The research included nearly 3,500 British men, aged 40 to 59 at the start of the study.

The researchers followed the men’s health for 20 years. Those who were physically active in mid-life were nearly three times more likely to be active at the end of the study period.

Men who played sports in mid-life were more likely to be active in old age than those who did other types of physical activity in mid-life. That was especially true of those who played sports

for many years, the findings showed.

Men who played sports for 25 years or more were nearly five times more likely to be physically active in old age than those who didn’t play sports, the study authors said.

But plenty of men took up high levels of walking as they aged. At the start of the study, just 27 per cent reported high levels of walking.

By the end of the study, that number was 62 per cent.

“Early engagement in sport and structured exercise may be vital for developing the necessary motor skills needed to establish a lifelong

People who bite their nails could be perfectionists Pulling hair, biting nails, picking skin - these behaviours are common, if frustrating, behaviours. But what do they mean for the people who suffer from them? Researchers from the Institut Universitaire en Santementale de Montreal and the University of Montreal, Canada, investigated in a new study.

The researchers found that participants engaged in repetitive behaviours when under stress or when they felt bored or frustrated, but not when they were relaxed.

"Chronic hair-pulling, skin-picking disorder and nail-biting and various other habits are known as body-focused repetitive behaviours. Although these behaviours can induce important distress, they also seem to satisfy an urge and deliver some form of reward,'' said principal investigator Kieron O'Connor.

O'Connor and colleagues studied 24 individuals with these repetitive behaviours and compared them with 24 control subjects who did not have body-focused repetitive behaviours.

The participants completed questionnaires to assess emotions such as boredom, anger, guilt, irritability and anxiety and also took part in a clinical evaluation.

Next, the participants were exposed to different experimental situations, each designed to stir one of four emotions: Stress Relaxation Frustration Boredom

The team found that, during the boredom and frustration experiments, subjects with a history of body-focused repetitive behaviours reported a stronger desire to engage in the behaviours. However, participants were not more likely to pull their hair, bite their nails or pick their skin during the relaxation experiment.

According to the authors of the study, these results confirm that participants engage in these behaviours when under stress or when they feel bored or frustrated, and as such are not simply "nervous" habits.

O'Connor explains the study's findings: "We believe that individuals with these repetitive behaviours may be perfectionistic, meaning that they are unable to relax and to perform tasks at a 'normal' pace.

They are therefore prone to frustration, impatience and dissatisfaction when they do not reach their goals. They also experience greater levels of boredom.”

Mushroom & herb risotto

ING RED IEN TS: Ser ves: 4.

Time: 45min 750 ml chicken stock 1/2 white onion, finely chopped 30g butter 1 clove garlic, diced 200g fresh mushrooms, finely chopped (any type of mushroom will work) 200g arborio rice 250ml dry white wine 80g grated Parmesan cheese 2 to 3 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs of your choice

In a large saucepan, heat the chicken stock over low heat. In a large frying pan, cook the onion and garlic in 30g of butter until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the chopped fresh mushrooms and cook until they give up their juice, add your chopped herbs then Add the rice and cook, stirring until the rice becomes opaque, about 2 minutes. Add the wine and cook until it is absorbed into the rice, season well and stirring constantly. add the hot stock to the rice, a half cupful

at a time, stirring until each addition of stock is absorbed, about 15 minutes in total.

Once the rice is al dente, remove the risotto from the heat. Add the rest of the parmesan cheese and remaining 15g of butter.

Food tip: Smash garlic cloves inside a resealable plastic bag with the back of a knife. That way, your cutting board and knife won’t smell.

Lamb & potato salad

Clams a la marinera...

Clams for me are one of the best seafood products on the Costa Blanca and easy to find in any fishmongers or supermarket.

Clams a la Marinera is a delicious and easy tapa recipe, simple dish made with fresh clams, cooking in a white wine, onions and garlic sauce, you can even add A little chilli if you like a little spice...great for lunch or a light dinner! cooking METHOD Add the clams to a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of salt and cover with

water, and set aside for about 1 hour, this will release any grit they have inside of the clams Chop the onion and slice garlic.

In a large frying pan, add a drizzle of olive oil. When it is hot, add in chopped onion and sautĂŠ until they turn golden. Add 2 tbsp of flour, the pepper, and a clove of garlic. Once everything has turned a golden colour, add a 1/2 cup of water, white wine and the tomato paste. Add 3 slices of lemon and season well, Cook for 2-3 minutes more.

Pour the onion mixture into the saucepan with the clams. Cook on low until the sauce thickens, stirring often for about 4 minutes. When cooked add your parsley and serve in bowls and serve hot. You can serve with a crisp baguette or slices of pitta bread.

Food tip: Cut a fresh lemon into wedges.

After you are finished handling the fish, or seafood squeeze the lemon onto your hands, rub your hands together, and rinse with water, this will eliminate the smell. ingredients 2 lbs. medium clams (cleaned) 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped 8 oz. white wine olive oil 2 tbsp flour pinch of pepper Pinch of Salt 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 lemon 1 bay leaf 1 tablespoon tomato paste Tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

Although the recipe calls for lamb tenderloins, you could certainly substitute left over grilled lamb with excellent results.

3 lb lamb fillets 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup fresh mint, chopped 2 lb baby new potatoes, scrubbed 2 red peppers, roasted and chopped 1 lb asparagus, blanched and chopped 2 tbsp fresh chives, chopped 1/3 cup lime juice 1/2 cup olive oil 4 egg yolks 2 tbsp olive oil

DIRECTIONS 1. Steam the new potatoes until tender, then drain.

If the potatoes are larger than bite sized, cut them into halves or quarters as appropriate. Set aside.

2. Blanch the asparagus, plunge into ice water, then

drain on paper towel lined wire racks. Set aside.

3. Preheat the barbecue on HIGH, and place red peppers on grids. Char on all sides, then remove from the heat. Place the peppers in a paper bag to cool, then slip off the charred skins; seed and chop.

4. Grill the lamb on HIGH for 2 - 3 minutes per side.

Cool, then slice.

5. To make the dressing, place the yolks, garlic, and lime juice in a blender, or in the bowl of a food processor. With the motor running, add the oils in a thin stream. Add the chopped mint leaves. Season with salt and pepper if desired.

6. Toss the lamb, potatoes, peppers and blanched asparagus with the dressing, and garnish with fresh chives.

Waiting times for those wishing for an opportunity to gain their licence have soared as tests are only conducted on two days each week at

present, Thursdays and Fridays.

Many centres are now being forced to turn away new students until they are able to decrease their waiting lists.

Cuts have already been made in a number of centres and the prolonged decrease in income carries the threat of closures if the problem is not dealt with soon.

There are 25 driving examiners in

Malaga Province, each of whom can invigilate up to three tests per day.

With more than 200 driving schools in the province, queues are only increasing, adding to this is the fact that not everybody passes their test first time.

Centres are now calling on the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) to get involved, making direct appeals for both resolution and compensation.

Grand slams CARLOS MOYA, the former world no. 1 tennis player, beat out fellow tennis champion John McEnroe in the final of 2017 Senior Master Cup held in Marbella.

Moya, who is McEnroe’s junior by almost 20 years, beat his opponent by six sets to four after an intense match that saw plenty of competitive banter thrown between the two players.

The final started out neck and neck and McEnroe even caught Moya by surprise with a few of his signature volleys, but age and physique triumphed in the end and the Spaniard went in for the win.

This was Moya’s first time in the competition held at the Puente Romano Tennis Club. McEnroe competed in the first edition of the

tournament last year where he also came second to Spaniard Albert Costa.

Spectators also got the chance to see tennis legends such as Pat Cash, Mats Wilander and Yannick Noah play over the weekend while Manolo Santana, another former Spanish champion, watched on from the stands.

Barcelona consider leaving La Liga after independence vote

Josep Maria Bartomeu the FC Barcelona president has said that the La Liga champions will consider playing in a different league and country if Cataluña gains independence.

Following the illegal referendum vote last Sunday, in which it is claimed over 90 percent voted for independence.

He stated: “This situation does not exist so far but with regards to things that can happen in the future, it is something that the board of directors would discuss.

“If we discuss the subject intensely then obviously we will find the best solution. But if this independence happens, the board of directors will decide.

After being threatened with a six-point deduction if the match was postponed Barcelona´s La Liga match against Las Palmas did proceed.

Barcelona keen to avoid the sanction after losing the title to Real Madrid by only three points last season.
