by Jimmy Grayling THE number of passengers using Costa del Sol Airport and the AVE high speed train service during the first six months of 2017 has broken all records.

By the end of June a total of 8,394,937 voyagers had flown in or out of Malaga province, beating 2016 figures by over a million, or 13.7 per cent.

There were 62,468 flights, a 12.5 per cent increase, while 49,243 of these and 7,252,943 passengers were of non-domestic origin, a growth of 15 per cent.

Domestic travellers numbered 1,118,537, an in-

crease of 5.5 per cent.

Although peak season for tourism began on July 1, the number of flights increased by 12 per cent in June, indicating an early start to the summer frenzy.

Saturday June 24 was the busiest day, when 73,038 visitors arrived, and the airport looks set to beat last year’s record-breaking totals of 16.67 million fliers and 123,700 takeoffs and landings.

Airport bosses say that the new Terminal 3 building can in theory handle 30 million people per year, with big ambitions for the future.

The AVE train service has also continued its up-

ward trend, with a 3.1 per cent increase in passengers from January to June.

A total of 1,189,000 travellers hit the rails, 36,000 more than during the same period in 2016, with 71 per cent heading to or from Spanish capital Madrid.

Spanish rail network manager Renfe this week announced that it is to offer 970,000 AVE seats on its Malaga line between the end of June and beginning of October.

The number of services between Malaga and Catalan tourist stronghold Barcelona will be increased to three per day during this period.

by Jemima Roberts THE MAYOR of Estepona, Jose Maria Garcia Urbano, has said the recent filming of India’s Fear Factor show in the town has provided huge amounts of publicity.

The programme, which will begin to air over the next few days, is watched by around 40 million people in India, following 90 celebrities over 45 days as they race around Estepona, participating in challenges. The stars, who are housed in hotels around the town, take in some of the area’s most famous

attractions, including the bullring, old town and Parque San Isidro Labrador.

The show, which is produced by Endemol, the Dutch-based company responsible for programmes Big Brother and Deal or No Deal, amongst others, is one of the most successful in India.

Mayor Garcia Urbano believes the promotional potential of the show will boost tourism, providing millions of Euros in free advertising given the programme also has millions of followers on social networks.

Rodriguez, confirmed if the show receives another series, Estepona would have an even greater role, explaining, “thanks to the facilities provided by the town’s council, and the number of locations available here, we will do everything possible to re-record in Estepona.”

Mayor Garcia Urbano thanked the production company for choosing Estepona and said in addition to the publicity gained from the programme, filming also provided an important economic boost to hotels and restaurants across the town.

€151,562 in housing aid RESIDENTS on the Costa del Sol are set to benefit from thousands of Euros in rent relief.

by Jemima Roberts Velez Malaga’s Council, which gives away the second highest amount of housing aid in Malaga province, is offering up to €200 a month to help families pay their rent, or up to €500 for those who are “especially vulnerable and at risk of social alienation.”

Applications, which can be submitted until July 15, will be considered from anyone on a limited income, or considered to be “vulnerable”. Those eligible “must be the leaseholder, or have the right to use the property, and be registered in the municipality.”

Zoila Martin, Councillor for Social Services, explained those covered would include people “who were unemployed, disabled or dependent, as well as victims of domestic abuse or terrorism.” She added the council received 147 applications in 2016, 109 of which were accepted, and explained “all citizens of Velez Malaga have the right to a decent home.”

Until July 28, the council will also be taking applications for assistance in adapting and improving the safety of houses for those over 65, or who have reduced mobility. Those interested in applying for funding can do so at the Community Social Services building on Calle Hojaleteros.

MARBELLA’S Council has put together a fire prevention plan ahead of the hot, dry summer months.

Miguel Diaz, Councillor for Sustainability, has announced, “one of our main weapons in preventing blazes is to check land to make sure it is in the best condition.”

He added the council has looked over 225 hectares of land to ensure no waste or dry vegetation has built up which could easily ignite.

He explained, "this figure reflects the importance we place on different fire prevention tools, especially given that Marbella has many built-up areas which are close to woodland and are therefore a greater fire risk.” Councillor Diaz sought to reassure locals and visitors, though, saying Marbella’s temperatures did not climb too high in the summer months, while also asking them to “collaborate” with the council’s prevention plan.

The subject was a source of some contention in the council chamber, however, after the opposing, rightleaning Partido Popular (PP) accused the council of a lack of transparency. Councillor Diaz was quick to hit back over the claims, claiming, “the PP is trying to generate alarm on a subject as sensitive as fire.”

Clear waters

by Jemima Roberts BENALMADENA and Torremolinos are set to benefit from cleaner swimming water this summer thanks to three new waste collection boats, costing €380,000.

Encarnacion Cortes, Councillor for Tourism, Beaches and Ports, explained the vessels, “will help to improve the look and quality of the beaches and bathing water.”

The service, which is provided in a collaboration between Acosol and the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Eastern Costa del Sol, will continue until September 15.

The new boats were launched at an event attended by councillors from Benalmadena, including Councillor Cortes, Javier Marin and Enrique Garcia, as well as several others from Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Mijas and Manilva.

Councillor Cortes explained, "they will dock in our port, which will benefit us.” While Javier Marin, Councillor for Security, said the scheme "improves Benalmadena’s image as a tourist destination, helping us better one of our main resources; sand and sea.” He reminded locals, "it is very important to be aware there are a number of products we cannot put down drains because purifiers are not able to absorb them and this forms a slick on the sea.”

A total of eleven vessels will clean the coastline across Manilva, Estepona, Puerto Banus, Marbella, La Bajadilla, Cabopino, Fuengirola and Benalmadena.

Unemployment plummets UNEMPLOYMENT has fallen for the sixth month in a row to 2255 in Almuñecar, with almost 800 people finding employment since this January.

The council’s Department for Development and Employment reported the largest change has been seen in those aged between 25 and 44, where unemployment fell by 475. Those aged over 45 saw the second highest growth in employment with 223 finding jobs. Eighty-eight people aged under 25 also found work.

The council explained according to the latest statistics, of the three most populated municipalities of the Costa Tropical, Almuñecar has the lowest unemployment rate in the region.

The town’s Mayor, Trinidad Herrera, said "the data invites optimism because between June 2013 and June 2017, unemployment has fallen from more than 1000 people. The downturn is a trend which has consolidated and been sustained over time, which is very significant.”

Mayor Herrera said she was pleased with the figures as "the statistics show that we are on the right track, although the figures are not what we want; reaching full employment is our commitment. So much remains to be done and we must continue working from all sides to further reduce the unemployment rate in Almuñecar.”

WORKERS from the Costa del Sol maritime rescue service sprung into action after a semi-sunk boat which slipped from its mooring was spotted off Nerja’s Burriana Beach.

The two-man rowing boat, “O terror dos mares” (O terror of the two seas) was initially thought to be a shipwreck. Following investigations, rescue workers, who are based in Caleta de Velez, realised it had simply come adrift and alerted its owners, who came to move it.

by Jemima Roberts DOG-LOVERS are flocking to Motril’s Playa del Cable, after the council decided to reopen its animal-friendly beach for another year.

The well-known PlayaCan (dog beach), which opened for the first time last year, is only one of the ten that are in Andalucia.

The councillors for Tourism and Beaches, Alicia Crespo, and Health and Consumer Affairs, David Martin, explained "an area of more than 1,500 square meters has been set aside for pets, a space that is fully equipped so

that dog owners can take them to the beach without any problems.”

Alicia Crespo said the council decided to reinstate the beach this summer after the town’s tourist offices received multiple queries about the unique area. She added, “one in three pet owners choose their holiday spot depending on whether they can take their animals with them,” explaining, “half of them would not consider travelling without their pets.”

The area, which provides bins for waste and showers for dogs, gives Motril “a competitive advantage over similar sun and beach destinations,”

according to Councillor Crespo.

Councillor Martin added Motril “takes into account dog-lovers,” and “is not only a pioneer in being sensitive to their needs but also appears on websites as being one of the best beaches in Spain for dogs.” He confirmed, “we will continue working towards becoming a destination for those who want to travel with their dogs.”

Finally, Martin encouraged those who enjoy taking their pets to the beach to consider coming to Motril and having a splash with their furry friends, “which many people consider a part of their family.”

€5.9m property bonus THIRTY-THREE publically owned buildings on the Costa del Sol are to be sold off to fund millions of Euros of projects set out in its annual budget.

Velez Malaga’s Mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, and the Councillor for Contracting and Patrimony, Antonio Moreno Ocon have been responsible for identifying valuable plots in the town, as well as in Torre del Mar, Chilches , Benajarafe, Lagos and Trapiche, totalling more than 27,600 square meters.

Mayor Ferrer said the sales would fund 40 initiatives; “important projects which will help develop the town.”

He added, “it is important to have the money to pay for these investments and over this month we will see this happen and we should be able to start selling in September,” stating, “seventy per cent of the legal technicalities are already finished.”

Councillor Ocon confirmed, “we have sorted out the legalities of the plots, dealing with any charges on them and registering everything properly.”

Within the town’s budget, €13.4 million have been earmarked for investments, €5.9 million of which will be funded by the sale of property.

Under the initiative, the Mercovelez building will be reformed for administrative use, a social centre will be completed in the Romeral area, and improvements will be made to the Casa Cervantes, the Centre for Drug Addiction, Casa Larios, Caleta Tenure, Palacio Beniel and Local Police station.

Commercial premises are also planned for the San Francisco market, as well as refurbishments to Plaza de la Constitucion, Lope de Vega theatre and Benajarafe’s day centre. Councillor Ocon added funds will also be put aside for the town’s air show, Maria Zambrano park, Torre del Mar’s cleaning service, the parks and gardens department, Torre del Mar’s scenic arts space and to improve the Local Police’s communications services.

Lifeguard saves three from drowning

‘Drug addict’ arrested for stabbing own mother to death A THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested for stabbing his mother to death in the home they shared in Caleta de Velez.

The alleged killer, identified only as Piero, remains in custody and is reportedly awaiting examination after claims he has a drug addiction. Police are as yet unsure why he attacked his sixty-three-year-old mother, Maria Ines.

The woman was found with a stab wound to her chest when her ex-husband, Elio, came to collect to work at the supermarket business they still shared. After getting no reply ringing the building’s buzzer, Elio entered, finding his ex-wife in a pool of blood, before calling the police.

On finding Elio on the building’s steps, covered in blood, officers initially thought he had committed the crime before learning Piero had handed himself in at a police station shortly before the find, telling officers, “I think I’ve killed my mother. The knife is on the sofa.”

Maria Ines was from a well-known local family, with six siblings who own businesses in Velez Malaga. She had been living in the home she was killed in for over 30 years and neighbours were quick to pay tribute to the well-regarded woman, with one describing her as 'extraordinary, polite and kind. She never bothered anyone'.

The incident has now rocked the neighbourhood, with one resident commenting “you would never think something like this would happen.”

Baywatch buoy: Dani used the device to save two lives

by Staff Reporter THREE swimmers who ignored a red flag prohibiting going in the water on El Saltillo beach, Torremolinos, have been rescued.

Two of the trio were taken to a medical centre to be treated for seasickness after they were spotted by a passing beach patrol vehicle at around 5.46pm, which raised the alarm. The flag had been put in place at 4.30pm after the current had changed because of an incoming storm.

Dani, the lifeguard who answered the call for help, was faced with rescuing all

three people alone, choosing to attend to French woman, Anne N, aged 30, first, as she was nearest to the shore. Reaching Anne, he found she was not in danger of drowning and the woman was able to make her own way out of the sea.

The lifeguard then turned his attention to the other two, one of whom was floating on a life ring thrown from a nearby bar. As he made his way to the swimmer, he realised the third person was also in serious difficulty and daringly rescued both at once, using his red Baywatch-style buoy, and saving the lives of Vincent C.A., aged 48, from

Norway, and Patricia O.G., aged 46, from Spain.

Once on the beach, the pair, who were showing signs of having swallowed water, were put in the recovery position until an ambulance arrived.

Torremolinos’ Council has now expressed its appreciation to all those who helped that day, as well as everyone who continues to protect the town’s coastline. Councillor for Beaches, Maribel Tocon, also called on beach-users to “respect the flags which are placed on beaches to show the condition of the sea, which help avoid risk.”

Dog pounds criticised over mass deaths

by Jemima Roberts AN ANIMAL charity on the Costa del Sol has spoken out against the high number of dogs being put down by perreras, Spanish dog pounds.

Sue Whewell, President of Tail Torrox, a dog shelter, has said it is time the Spanish Government intervene in the situation, subsidising and encouraging neutering.

Ms Whewell, who set up the charity in 2009, explained she routinely takes in dogs from pounds to save them being killed. She added the facilities, which receive state funding for taking dogs off the streets, make little effort to rehouse the animals unless a dog is chipped, and sometimes put animals down within days of bringing them in.

Sue claimed dogs in perreras unfortunately also often show signs of disease, which mostly go untreated until they reach Tail. She alleged, “in January we took in 11 puppies from the Don Animal perrera in Rincon de la Victoria. Sadly, three died due to parva virus they had contracted earlier.” Sue said, “if these facilities must exist, they should look after the animals they take in,” asking, “how can this happen in a country which has animal cruelty laws?”

Ultimately though, she accepts the perreras are fighting a losing battle, with more dogs abandoned than people willing to take them in. She believes in addition to compelling pounds to look after the animals they receive, the government should introduce a law encouraging and subsidising neutering. She said, “in some European countries, the government has helped lower the price of neutering to €15, an affordable amount which helps stem the problem of unwanted and mistreated animals.”

Sue added the problem goes beyond animal cruelty and also serves to give a negative impression to visitors. She explained the shelter often receives abandoned dogs which have been found by tourists, shocked at seeing so many animals on the street. Ms Whewell said Tail will now be writing to Oscar Medina, Torrox’s Mayor, pointing out the potential negative impact on the town’s tourism trade, and asking for his support in her neutering campaign.

Tail has a dog shelter, which sees dogs walked and cared for by volunteers, as well as two charity shops, all located in Torrox Costa. The charity is always looking for animal-lovers to give their time, “however much or little they can do,” as well as fosterers and permanent owners. Heavy machinery spoils beach

by Jemima Roberts SUN-WORSHIPPERS on Torrox’s Ferrara Beach have complained about the presence of heavy machinery being used to repair storm damage.

The council’s left-leaning opposition party, PSOE, is calling on Torrox’s Mayor, Oscar Medina, and Sandra Extremera, Councillor for Beaches, to resign after works were carried out to 300 metres of the beach, which was battered by bad weather.

Following complaints by tourists, who called the sight “lamentable,” both the PSOE and IU parties said the council’s management of the situation was “disastrous,” claiming more should have been done sooner to prevent damage.

Councillor Mari Nieves Ramirez said, “there are no excuses for summer visitors to have to deal with bulldozers and trucks on the middle of the beach. The entire Costa del Sol has suffered from these storms but nowhere looks like Torrox does.”

The governing, right-wing Partido Popular (PP) has apologised for the disruption, saying it had spent €200,000 on restoring the beach so far this year.

The fracas comes after Mayor Medina announced in June a second breakwater would be built off the town’s coast to prevent further sand loss.

A first, measuring 115 metres, was built last year, costing €307,000 in the hope this would protect Ferrara Beach against yearly storm damage. While the structure has improved the annual problem, the beach’s width was greatly reduced again this year, particularly along a 300-metre patch near to the children’s playground.

The Ministry of the Environment has now committed to building the second structure, which Mr Medina says he hopes will provide a “definitive solution” to the problem.

Ferrara Beach: is often damaged by storms

Worker injured after being trapped in lift A MAINTENANCE worker has been taken to hospital in Malaga after becoming trapped and injured in a lift in Rincon de la Victoria. The man, who was fixing the machine on Avenida Mediterraneo when his legs became stuck in the mechanism, called for help at around 11.20am. Firefighters from the Provincial Consortium rushed to help him, alongside members of the Guardia Civil, Local Police and Public Enterprise for Health Emergencies (EPES), and successfully freed the man.

The incident has now been reported to the Centre for the Prevention of Occupational Risks and Labour Inspectorate.

Temple of doom ARCHAEOLOGISTS are set to carry out a study of three necropolis in Andalucia; Puente Noy, Monte Velilla and Laurita.

by Jemima Roberts A group of archaeologists from the University of Granada, led by Ivan Sanchez, could begin work as soon as August on the research project, which will “try to verify archaeological evidence” from the sites. Mr Sanchez explained, “the works will initially involve Georeferencing and a topographical survey of the terrain that occupies each of the areas already studies in Puente de Noy, and then we have to study Monte Velilla and Laurita.”

Once the first stage is finished, a superficial survey will be carried out at Monte Velilla and a radar sturdy of Laurita.

“The last phase will depend on the results of the previous work and would involve excavating a few tombs and providing an archaeological record. A fourth stage would involve disseminating what we have learned.”

The project is sponsored by four public bodies; the Council of Almuñecar the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology at the University of Granada, the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa Tropical and the Bastetana Centre for Archaeology Studies, based in Baza, which is supplying most of members of the archaeological team.

The group requested authorisation for the trip some weeks ago and hope to begin by the end of August.

Reaching out Help wanted THE MAYOR of Torremolinos, Jose Ortiz, has met with representatives from 14 countries to establish stronger links with ex-patriates.

The conference, which took place at the Palacio de Congresos, helped “create a communication channel and dialogue with foreign residents,” as well as addressing commons problems which arise day-to-day during a holiday of residency in Torremolinos, according to Mayor Ortiz.

Torremolinos has over 15,000 foreign residents from across 170 nationalities, representing almost 22 per cent of the town’s population. Mayor Ortiz explained, "We are an open and multicultural city, with a strong European vocation," adding, "We are like a small UN, a multicultural city that is enriched by this coexistence and tolerance," The town attracts around 1 million visitors each year, with an average of 30,000 people visiting Torremolinos’ tourist offices during the busiest months. The Mayor explained this showed the potential for foreign investment, which the council are currently trying to encourage through the Torremolinos General Urban Plan, designed to “change and evolve our town.”

Members of the National Police and Local Police were at the event, alongside consuls from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Israel, Armenia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Peru, Senegal and Uruguay.

Among the issues discussed were security, residency cards, help for foreigners at police stations, housing and investment opportunities.

BENALMADENA has hosted three workshops aimed at helping the unemployed find a job.

Beatriz Olmedo, Councillor for Employment, explained, "these courses will support participants in gaining the skills to find a job in an ever-changing workplace.”

The first class, How can I improve my CV, focused on the different types of resume, as well as how to create an original and unique CV. The second workshop, How to use social media to find work, taught participants how to use the web and connections to find a job, while the third, How to be successful in group interviews, prepared attendees for interviews at large companies, as well as how to stand out.

The workshops, which were initially only planned for 36 attendees, were widely successful, attracting 48 people in the end, forcing the organisers to expand the course.

The event was put on by the the Employment Department of the Benalforma Municipal Training Centre, as well as the Junta de Andalucia.

Alleged sex attacker caught

by Jemima Roberts THE NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a thirty-one-year-old Spanish man on suspicion of sexually assaulting four girls in Fuengirola over the past six weeks.

The alleged perpetrator is said to have threatened all his victims with a screwdriver before attacking them. The man, whose name has not been released by the police, is said by the victims to have driven to and from the attacks in a white van and is described as having short, dark hair, an athletic build, a tattoo on his arm, and as being between

five foot five and five foot seven.

The first assault came on May 31 when the alleged assailant is said to have approached a young Spanish girl, following her through the door to a building and then into its lift with her.

Once inside he allegedly threatened to kill her before forcing her to take down his trousers. The man fled before carrying out his assault however, after being disturbed by a noise.

Another victim was assaulted as she walked home along a street alone after a night out with friends. The man tried to make the Spanish girl touch him be-

fore one of her friends caught her up and started screaming. Reportedly the man did not flee but simply walked casually back to his parked white van.

In his final attack, the alleged perpetrator targeted a British girl in her twenties at around dawn as she was leaving work. The man is said to have jumped into the back of the girl’s car as she sat in the driver’s seat, and threatened to kill her with a screwdriver, saying it was not the first time he had murdered someone. The man allegedly forced the British girl to perform several sex acts before leaving in a white van.

Smoke inhalation victim hospitalised A SIXTY-YEAR-OLD woman has been taken to the Hospital Virgen de la Victoria in Malaga to be treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire in Torremolinos.

The blaze, which took place on the sixth floor of a building in Calle La Colina, also caused damage to the woman’s property. The source of the fire is as yet unknown.

Emergency workers rushed to the scene after receiving several calls at around 11.15am.

Firefighters, Local Police and National Police officers, as well as health workers, battled the flames and attended the woman.

by Jemima Roberts LAURA MORENO, Mijas’ Councillor for Employment, has handed out 20 diplomas to people who attended the council’s forklift driving course.

The programme, which was offered in collaboration with company, Autoescuelas Urbano, was free for those attending. Ms Moreno explained, “it is very gratifying to see how wellreceived the course has been because our goal is to give people the resources they need to get a job,” adding the

council’s commitment to training, “is one of our main priorities because it is essential for finding work.”

The course was taught over three days, with students given theoretical and practical training, obtaining a qualification at the end. Ms Moreno described the diploma as “essential for working in warehouses and construction companies.”

The course, which was taught by Patricia Urbano, was “very much focused on safety,” with Ms Urbano adding, “the students have been very attentive and have taken maximum

advantage of these classes.”

The scheme was the first of its kind, although according to Ms Moreno. “because its was so well-received, we hope to offer it again before Christmas. We are in continuous contact with the East Andalucia employment services, finding out which course would most meet the needs and wants of the people of Mijas and therefore have the biggest impact on employability.” She added, some courses benefit both the unemployed and entrepreneurs and we would encourage them all to participate.”

Emergency measures to tackle drought THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT is considering a raft of emergency proposals to deal with the ongoing drought threat on the Costa del Sol. In addition to continuing the current irrigation ban one day a week, several measures are being discussed.

The first is to connect the Chillar river to La Viñuela reservoir, which would bring in around 2.5 cubic hectometres of water a year. The project is now awaiting an agreement between the Environment Department and Tragsa.

Farmers are also calling for further connections with reservoirs in Velez Malaga, Algarrobo and Torrox, which they believe would bring in a further 10 cubic metres of water, costing €800,00.

Last week, Jose Fiscal, Councillor for the Environment, said the increasing lack of water supplies in La Viñuela reservoir are “beginning to take their toll.” The Councillor acknowledged recent irrigation cuts, preventing farmers watering their crops one day a week, with the aim of reducing water use by ten per cent, are not working.

Despite increasing fears over water shortages, the Junta de Andalucia has still not begun work to clear the Rubite tunnel. In April, the Ministry of Environment promised the works would begin "imminently" and were expected to take four months, saving around two cubic hectometres of water in the La Viñuela reservoir each year.

Ending with a bang

by Staff Reporter THE GUARDIA CIVIL have seized 8546 fireworks and 22 air pistols from a booth at the Archidona dog show.

It was found the vendor, who was giving away the explosives as prizes in a shooting game, lacked the relevant licences and safety measures to handle the products. Officers also discovered 390 of the fireworks had expired in 2015.

The agents, who were carrying out an inspection of several stalls at the fairground, found the 22 airsoft branded pistols, which were given away to mainly young customers, did not have corresponding serial number. On inspecting the storage space under the vendor’s counter, they found two boxes containing thousands of fireworks, and quickly discovered the stall owner did not have the necessary security measures in place to sell and market the products, and deeming the expired pyrotechnics to be a risk to humans.

Ever wanted to be a pilot?

ANYONE dreaming of learning to fly can do so at a drone piloting course in Almuñecar from July 24 to 28.

The workshop, which is currently open to applicants, will be taught by Alberto Prieto Espinosa, Emeritus Professor at the University of Granada, and will provide an introduction to the “theoretical and practical basics of remotely piloted drones,” at IES Puerta del Mar. Vanessa M. Martos Nuñez, the school’s academic deputy director, explained the course, “will be very well taught, and will involve practice runs under supervision, with one drone each per group of four students.” She said the classes would provide “an overview of remotely piloted drones, addressing basic concepts of their structure and various elements, basic navigation, custom-made designs, applications and regulations,” showing attendees “how they are structured and assembled, as well as how they are flown and controlled.”

The initiative has already generated interest given drones’ potential use in sectors including agriculture, energy, communications, logistics, major civil works inspection, or civil protection.

Almuñecar’s Council say the course could benefit engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs who want to add to their professional skills “in a field that is in great demand.”

Apple surveys Spain

Since 2015, Apple has been using LIDAR-equipped mapping vehicles to capture street-level imagery for the Apple Maps app.

Apple has expanded the areas where it is collecting data several times over the course of the last two years and according to the latest update to the company's support page, Apple Maps vehicles have recently made their way into Spain.

Apple regularly highlights the countries and cities around the world where its vehicles are located, and between July 3 and August 13, Apple will collect data in the Biscay province of Spain, in Arratia-Nerbioi, Busturialdea, Durangaldea, Enkarterri, Greater Bilbao, Lea Artibai and Uribe-Kosta.

According to Apple's support page, the information collected by the mapping vehicles will be used to improve Apple Maps, but just what Apple plans to do with the data remains unclear.

Because Apple promises to blur faces and license plates ahead of publication, there's been speculation that the company is working on a ‘street view’ addition to Apple Maps to mirror Google Maps.

Specsavers Opticas launch campaign to support the deaf and blind Specsavers Opticas have announced that they will be supporting the Once Foundation for the Deaf-Blind (La Fundación ONCE para la Atención de Personas con Sordoceguera - FOAPS) over the next six months.

They will be offering free comprehensive eye tests at all eight of their opticians and asking patients to donate 1€ to FOAPS after their test until the end of the year.

All funds raised will be donated to FOAPS to fund interpreters who are crucial to allow deafblind people to lead a full life and communicate. This is part of FOAPS’ 10 year anniversary campaign to raise awareness of the issues that deaf-blind people face and boost funding so they can help more of these vulnerable people who are totally isolated without their help.

Specsavers Opticas are committed to supporting charities and protecting sight. They have chosen FOAPS to support because of the huge difficulties that the deaf-blind have with interacting with the world and communicating.

“Most visually impaired people are able to rely on their other senses and can still communicate easily with the outside world.

Whereas the deaf-blind experience the world through touch and need someone to connect them with the world.” explains José Ángel Moral-Tajadura from Specsavers Opticas.

“The FOAPS interpreters are the eyes, ears

and often voice of the deaf-blind and have a crucial role to play. We hope that through our campaign we can raise enough money to fund an extra 400 hours of an interpreter.

This costs 6,000€ so we need 6,000 people to come in and have their eyes tested and make a donation before the end of the year.”

Esther Requena Olea, Director of FOAPS commented, “We are very happy that an international company such as Specsavers has decided to collaborate with our cause. The needs of the Deaf-Blind people are very specific and requires a lot of resources. With the funds raised from this campaign, we can offer more support to them to break the isolation and communication problems with the outside world that is a common problem for the Deaf-Blind.”

Heat-waves – how to protect your health Recent heat-waves have caused serious health and social problems in the WHO European Region. These effects can be prevented. To protect your health when temperatures are extremely high, remember to keep cool and use common sense.

The following tips are important.

Drink plenty of fluids During hot weather you will need to increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait to drink until you are thirsty. During heavy exercise in a hot environment, drink 2–4 glasses of cool fluids per hour.

Warning: If your doctor usually limits the amount of fluid you drink or you take diuretics, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot.

Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine, or large amounts of sugar; they may actually cause your body to lose more fluid. Also avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.

Replace salt and minerals Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body.

These must be replaced.

If you must exercise, drink 2–4 glasses of cool, non-alcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals lost in sweat. If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage or taking salt tablets.

Wear appropriate clothing Wear as little clothing as possible at home. Choose lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing. Sunburn affects the body’s ability to cool itself and causes a loss of body fluids.

It also causes pain and damages the skin.

If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (which will also keep you cooler), along with sunglasses and protective but light clothing.

Schedule outdoor activities carefully If you must be outdoors, try to limit your activity to morning and evening hours. Try to rest often in shady areas so that your body’s thermostat will have a chance to recover.

If you are not used to working or exercising in a hot en-

vironment, start slowly and gradually increase the pace. Remember to drink before you get thirsty.

If exertion in the heat makes your heart pound and leaves you gasping for breath, stop all activity. Get into a cool area, or at least into the shade, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, confused, weak or faint.

Stay cool indoors Stay cool indoors, take frequent cool showers or a foot bath, or wet your hands, face and back of neck or use wet blankets. Use your stove and oven less to maintain a cooler temperature in your home. Try to cool the home at night.

If necessary, find a cooler place than your home and spend a few hours there.

Take care of those at risk Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and watch them for signs of heat illness. Check on infants and young children much more often.

Adjust to the environment Be aware that any sudden change in temperature, such as an early summer heatwave, will be stressful to your body. You will have a greater tolerance for heat if you limit your physical activity until you become accustomed to the heat. If you travel to a hotter climate, allow several days to adapt to local temperatures before attempting any vigorous exercise, and work up to it gradually.

Remember common sense Limit sun exposure at mid-day and in places of potential severe exposure such as beaches. Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car.

Provide plenty of fresh water for pets, and leave water for them in a shady area.

What do the beach warning flags mean?

Red Flags: The most serious of all beach warning flags, red flags warn swimmers of serious hazards in the water. One red flag means that the surf is high or there are dangerous currents, or both. It means that the water is closed to swimming, as conditions are too dangerous for even the strongest swimmers.

Yellow Flags: When ocean conditions are rough, but not life-threatening, you might see a yellow flag on the beach. A yellow flag indicates potentially high surf or dangerous currents and undertows, and means that swimmers should exercise extreme caution. If there is a yellow flag, swim only near lifeguards and heed all lifeguard warnings. If you're swimming with children, or you aren't a strong swimmer yourself, wear a life jacket when swimming on yellow-flag days. Some beaches have a permanent yellow flag because of rocks, a sudden drop-off or a high population of bait fish that attracts predators.

Green Flags: The ocean is always unpredictable and even on clear and calm days, hazards still exist. Still, there are days when the threat of danger is lower than others. A green flag on the beach is an all-clear sign, indicating that it's safe to swim. Even when the flag is green, though, exercise caution in the ocean, listen to lifeguard warnings and keep a close eye on children.

Concordia charity working for the Costa del Sol H.R.H. PRINCESS Marie-Louise of Prussia, Countess Schönburg the great grand-daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II has lived in Marbella for many years.

by By Michael Cano She was associated with the UNICEF charity for 20 years but had to reduce her involvement in order to spend more time with her two growing children but with her husbandRudolf Graf von Schönburg who has been on the board of the Marbella Club Hotel since 1993, she has been at the centre of Marbella style and culture.

With her children ‘leaving the nest’, Princess Marie-Louise who is cousin to Queen Sofia, decided that she could return to charity work and was inspired by Diana, Princess of Wales who espoused the concept of dispelling the myths surrounding HIV/AIDS. Without financial help from any council, she managed to raise funds to set up a day centre for sufferers in San Pedro de Alcantara and she is still president of Concordia Anti-Aids Asociacion (ACAS) working tirelessly to keep the centre going and to educate the young in particular about the dangers of unsafe sex.

Things are so different today compared to two decades ago and the virus can be kept under control with the taking of a single pill each day but what the charity also does is arrange for those who think that they may be at risk to have a simple saliva test which will give the results, positive or negative within half an hour.

The princess realised at a very early stage that the impact on any individual who finds that they are positive has potential horrendous mental effects and therefore not only are the possible sufferers taken to the clinic for the test but they are accompanied by a trained psychologist to help comfort them if the news is bad.

Local Spanish residents seem to have taken this charity to heart and they are very supportive with generous donations to not only keep the centre open but also to allow regular visits by volunteers to local schools in the area from Estepona to La Cala de Mijas to give talks and to educate potentially vulnerable youngsters.

There has also been tremendous financial support from the German speaking community but English expatriates who have a wonderful reputation for getting behind all sorts of charities including animals, cancer, children, the elderly and poverty, don’t seem to be so interested in supporting this worthy cause, perhaps because they feel that it is a self-inflicted illness and that there are better causes.

Apart from education and testing, Concordia believes in helping the relatives of those who are infected and at the day centre, arrange to assist the young with different regular events such as learning to cook and being helped with English lessons.

Princess Marie-Louise works tirelessly to raise funds for the charity founded in 1994,to allow it to keep functioning and helps many of the local street people by feeding them, doing their weekly washing, offering them showers as well as driving them to health centres for tests and medication.

One of the means of raising funds is from the annual full colour Concordia magazine which receives magnificent support from many major companies not only based in Marbella, but across Spain and even as far the USA and the charity has just unveiled its 20th Anniversary edition.

This is a very dedicated lady who perhaps because of her aristocratic background devotes so much time to helping others who are in a less privileged position than herself.

THE CIRCUS is coming to town in Mijas until Friday August 11 in three locations across the municipality.

by Jemima Roberts The free Cabaret Circus Mijas will fill the city's parks with acrobatics, magic and clowns in Mijas Pueblo’s Plaza de la Constitucion, La Cala’s Plaza del Torre on Sunday July 30 and in Parque Andalucia in La Laguna on August 11. Acrobatics, tight-rope walkers, unicyclists, contortionists, jugglers and clowns will all delight audience from 9.30pm on all three dates.

As Gonzalo Payo of Wadaba Promotions, the show’s organiser, explains: "we are talking about a really dynamic event, in which we will interact with spectators, who will enjoy diverse entertainment.”

The town council’s Department for Young People is responsible for bringing a free outdoor leisure activity to the municipality. Tamara Vera, the councillor in charge of the department, explained, “once again we are putting on an activity designed for all audiences, and especially for our young people," adding the event, “will be different and involve audience participation. We want locals to be the stars of this outdoor, family-friendly show.”

The American movie star who loves to live on the Costa del Sol

by Michael Cano The interview with Damian Chapa, the actor and director continues with some more insights into his life and achievements.

When asked what he likes about Spain, Damian was full of praise and went into some detail about his love of the country and all things Spanish “Well I have travelled the world as an actor/director and I have heard of this ‘aristocracy’ thing as a kid.

I’m not one of those fortunate ones. I grew up as tough as they get. But after meeting so many different types of people in this so called ‘Aristocracy’ I have found that the Spanish are truly regal people.

“Not only the so called ‘aristocracy’ but even the people you meet in general. I have never met such an elegant and giving people. They are very very kind, considerate and warm. The warmth I was used to, having Mexican and Italian roots.

“However this real regalness and mannered ways I have only seen in the Spanish. They are truly in general the most classy folks I have met. I have also noticed money is not a ‘god’ to them. They know how to live and they know how to rest and they know much about passion and love and poetry. I feel right at home.

“Not only as I have Latino roots but I also feel more alive as an artist here. Some people think Hollywood would be more conducive to that type of feeling. However on the contrary, Hollywood is a cesspool of fake people and the last place on earth I want to be or to film in.

“I am an ultimate optimist. I always make lemonade out of lemons. I have never had any other choice.”

“I have made better quality films in Europe not only Spain France and Holland and even Ireland, but also in Germany. I mean there is so much history and great architecture in Europe. I see more talent walking down the streets of any European city then I ever have in a Hollywood cast session.

“I have recently studied a bit of Orson Welles history here in Spain. I understood right away his feelings on why he left Hollywood.

There are some very gifted people in Hollywood and I promise there are some very good people. But In general it’s like a poker table when people have a million dollars up for stake. You don’t get the best of peoples personalities when so much money and ‘fame’ is involved.

Damian then spoke a little more about his upbringing but clearly bore no grudge against his parents even though he was left to look after himself at an early age.

“As a result of my strange ‘not normal’ upbringing, I was able to meet so many interesting people as a result of what they gave me which was the ability to be sensitive from pain and suffering as a child. “I am an ultimate optimist. I always make lemonade out of lemons. I have never had any other choice. As far as ‘education’I taught myself everything I know- how to direct, how to act, how to edit. I went as far as the ninth grade (leaving aged 15). Meantime I did learn a lot about how to direct by watching Federico Fellini films over and over and over again.”

Damian has a number of children, one of whom has the middle name Scorsese and works as a producer on some of his films.

In last week’s article, he said that he is never still or idle and to go with his new movie Luz which is due to start filming in October, he has also finished his first book My Chicano Story which will be coming out on Kindle worldwide in November.

Quietly spoken this actor, director and writer is welcome in Spain, his favourite European Damian Chapa and Spanish actress Anna Martin who will appear in Luz country to live in.

A Sense of Déjà Vu by

Massive demonstrations and anti-government violence sweeping many European cities fill me with a sense of déjà vu. Western media was muted in its coverage of the massive anti-G20 protests in Hamburg during which nearly 111 police were injured. Ironically, Russia media gave the best coverage.

It was then I thought of events in the Soviet Bloc during the 1980s.

Little did we know back then where these civil disturbances were going? All we could do was watch and wait. Eventually, the dysfunctional Eastern Bloc crumbled. Perhaps the 22 nations surrendered to Stalin by Churchill and Roosevelt at Yalta in February 1945 was bound to collapse anyway.

From frying pan to fire: Those nations for whom World War II occupation dragged on for a further 45 years were to place their briefly freed shoulders in the European Union’s yoke.

Former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev, who did know his hammer from his sickle, wryly questioned why the EU was modelling itself on the former Soviet Bloc. His concerns are increasingly voiced today.

The European Union boasts not one but two presidents, neither of whom is elected

by Europe’s electorate. The EU regime, let’s call a spade a spade, is badly governed by 27 unelected commissioners. The Soviets called them commissars but a privy by any other name remains a privy.

The European Union’s parliament is advi-

sory only. This might explain why only 30 MEPs out of highly paid 751 members bothered to attend an important EU parliamentary session on July 4. At least EU democracy can run on an empty tank.

When on 7/8 July the G20 shindig was held in Hamburg tens of thousands of demonstrators besieged the once-war ravaged resurrected maritime city. Dubbed the ‘Welcome to Hell’ campaign it wasn’t much of a welcome for the heads of state and assorted invitees in attendance.

Apart from the usual largely unelected heads of state who presented themselves at the shindig were some of the most unsavoury figures in modern history, several of whom are under investigation. Others, like U.S President Donald Trump, Britain’s PM Theresa May and Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Finance, have the blood of millions on their hands.

Known by the company one keeps there were also in attendance the presidents of West African despotic regimes, Senegal and Guinea. Other vultures descending on the tax-funded banqueting binge included Christine Lagarde. The head of the International Monetary Fund was recently found guilty of fraud but no charges were levelled.

I am a bit old for street protests but I can’t help but think that on this occasion the demonstrators hold the moral high ground. If you want to see the EU’s future fast rewind to the Soviet Bloc circa 1989.

Symonds Yat Rock in Herefordshire is regarded by many as the most scenic spot in England and visiting it for the first time in May, I can enthusiastically concur with that assessment.

Perched high above the Wye valley, the panorama of meadows; woodland; distant church spires and pretty country houses, is quite spectacular.

But a chance comment from a small group standing close by, caught my attention and went something like this: “They are always going on about our over populated country, but just look”. A young man was lecturing his companions, sweeping his arm expansively across the vista by way of emphasis. It gave me food for thought, and to be honest, it left me feeling somewhat alarmed.

I believe it is happening more and more with this age of equality, when a young women’s fancy and mind turns to marriage.

On this occasion, this young woman in question took her boyfriend’s hand stroked the back of it lovingly, and looked adoringly into his eyes, asking him to marry her, this was witnessed by Sylvia Wayne’s daughter who had been invited to have lunch with the couple.

It had been quite a long courtship by any standards, 44 years to be precise, however the husband to be jumped at the chance to make Sylvia who proposed, his wife.

Sylvia Wayne 93 years young, first met Sydney Altman in 1972 at a social event, and have been together since then, Sylvia a retired shop keeper for lingerie and children’s wear in Barkingside East London.

Sydney originally from Glasgow explains that he had never asked Sylvia to marry him, “It just wasn’t on the cards, but I’m really pleased that she asked me, it really did not come as a surprise particularly after all this time, I just put my hand up, saying “at last”.

Sylvia became a widow 50 years ago after her husband died at a young age, my first husband and myself were married in 1942 when I was 18, “it wasn’t very grand during those war years, we were up all night making and cutting sandwiches for the guests, we did not have any money and we ended 30 pounds in debt, he then went off to war.

Sylvia explains “I invited my daughter Janis over

to have lunch with Sydney and myself, “just on the spur of the moment, I took Sydney’s hand and asked him to marry me, as I wanted to make an honest man of him”.

Surrounded by family and friends the ceremony took place at Enfield register office, “the weather was not great, but this did not deter us come rain or shine it was going to be a glorious day” said Sylvia “then we went off to a celebration tea at a posh Hotel”.

Speeches at the reception were made by Mrs Keen Sylvia’s daughter, her brother Nicholas and the best man, grandson Simon Keen. Sydney says, “when I look

at Sylvia’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, I know that they belong to me in law”.

“We even had a hen and stag night, I had to wear a sash across my chest as I walk along the street saying groom to be”.

Sydney a retired pharmacist aged 87, says “it was a wonderful day, surrounded by family and friends, everyone was so happy, laughing and handshakes all day long, I’ve known Sylvia’s family so long, I’ve been welcomed into the family being married to Sylvia will further strengthen my bond to my bride’s family, they are like my children even her son calls me Dad”.

Daughter Janis 65, organised the nuptials, “it was quite surreal as most of my friends unfortunately have to organise funerals as they lose their parents, so a wedding celebration for my mother is a very happy event”.

The new Mrs Sylvia Altman wore a dusky pink outfit and had three bridesmaids, and page boys her great-grandchildren. After the day’s events had concluded, and the happy couple prepared to go to their home in Brookman’s Park in North London to continue the day’s celebration’s.

Sylvia’s last words when she was asked if they had taken a taxi home, her reply was quite indigent, “My husband does not walk well, but he is an excellent driver”.

Hard Rock plans €2 billion resort in Spain

Hard Rock International has announced plans to open a sprawling, €2 billion resort in Spain that will become one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with including a casino, new concert venue, and 600-room hotel.

To be set in north-eastern Spain in Vila-seca and Salou, Tarragona, Hard Rock Entertainment World will occupy a space of 745,000 square metres.

Anchoring the resort will be the iconic, guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel, which will span 100,00 square metreswith 600 rooms.

The resort casino will include 1,200 slot machines and 100 table games and feature a pool for guests.

Blueprints for the resort also call for a new entertainment venue that can accommodate 15,000 people. The venue will host national and international musical acts.

In the first phase of the project, a collaboration with Port Aventura, another entertainment resort in the area, will see the development of a 500-room hotel catering to families, along with a luxury retail and shopping destination that will feature 75 shops and boutiques.

The overall investment for the project is pegged at €2 billion. The Spanish resort will add to the brand's portfolio of 176 cafés, 24 hotels and 11 casinos in 75 countries around the world.

Like a crazy Caribbean night THERE was a thrill in the warm night air as the Puente Romano Tennis Club welcomed the Crazy 80s gig to Marbella headliner Billy Ocean.

by Michael Cano He and the other main performers, Heather Small and Right Said Fred had their biggest hits some years ago, they still have what it takes to give up to the minute performances.

Piano Man Paul Maxwel opened the evening with his ever popular take on some of the best loved songs from the 80s and he was the ideal performer to be playing as guests were arriving for the gig.

Right Said Fred were first on stage Richard and Fred Fairbrass showing that they still have plenty of energy and longevity as they have just released their ninth album Exactly on their own label which has gained good reviews.

Fred is the quieter of the two brothers and a good guitarist whilst Richard in his long white skirt went through a number of their songs with that trademark deep laconic voice.

When you have fronted one of the most successful bands of the 90s, M People, have hits in your right, one of which was chosen for soundtrack for the UK bid to host the 2012 Olympics then you must be special.

Heather Small is a singer who understands the stage and how to entertain an audience with her strong and powerful voice, presenting a range of her best known numbers and she saw a huge resurgence in her career after Proud played such an important part in the Miranda TV series.

Billy Ocean arrived on stage in his white suit with long dreadlocked tied back grey hair fronting a tight, funky band backed by a trio of great singers.

Probably best known for the singles Caribbean Queen and When the Going gets Tough which was chosen for the soundtrack of the Michael Douglas movie Jewel on the Nile he was still able to go through a back catalogue of 10 albums and numerous singles and it wasn’t just the audience that was enjoying itself as he and the band simply entertained.

This was an unusual line up, but the sheer excellence of the performers set in the delightful surroundings of the Puente Romano Tennis Club meant that the evening was a great success and bodes well for July 21 when the legendary George Benson arrives from the USA to perform his own brand of smooth electric jazz and soul.

VELEZ MALAGA will be hosting its own guitar legends at the XXVI International Guitar Festival tomorrow night.

The event, which takes place at the Marques de Beniel Palace and the Teatro del Carmen, will include concerts by Ciro Carbone, Hermanos Cuenca, Christian Lavernier and Jose Luis Lastres Escalona.

The town’s Councillor for Culture, Cynthia Garcia, commented "we are once again hosting this festival, which is a cultural benchmark, which gets better every time, and where we can enjoy artists not only from different parts of Spain but also from other countries including France and Italy.”

The director of the International Guitar Festival, Javier Garcia, explained guitar fans will enjoy "a series of master classes,” which “will be taught by these teachers during the mornings."

Today, Ciro Carbone will perform with Pedro Navarro at the same venue, while on Saturday the closing ceremony will take place in the Teatro del Carmen with a performance by the Provincial Symphonic Orchestra of Malaga. Tickets can be bought at the culture area of the Beniel Palace.

Me gusta, pero Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

I trust that those of you who have been following these articles have been discovering all the new sentences you’ve been able to make, and of course going round practising them!

No doubt you’ve got into all sorts of muddles as well, but that’s a normal part of language learning, so no problem there.

First things first, before we learn anything new, let’s look at the answers to the homework. You had to translate the following sentences into English – so here they are with the answers.

No quiero volver a casa hoy.

I don’t want to return home today. ¿Quieres bailar conmigo?

Do you want to dance with me?

Voy a hablar con mi amigo.

I’m going to speak to my friend. ¿Vas a beber vino?

Are you going to drink wine?

No necesito comer ahora.

I don’t need to eat now. ¿Puedo aprender más?

Can I learn more?

This week we are going to add another “first person” expression to our collection.

Here it is: ME GUSTA meaning “I like”.

Now ME GUSTA works slightly differently from the other first person phrases we have learnt so far, because although we translate it as “I like”, it doesn’t strictly mean that literally. It actually means: “it pleases me”. In a way you don’t even need to know that, but some people get themselves in a pickle because they think that the “me” bit means “I”. Also they tend to mispronounce it like the English word “me” and they end up saying things like “me quiero” for I like, and “me necesito” for I need. That is totally wrong!!! We use “quiero” on its own for I want and “necesito” on its own for I need. If we wanted to add the word for “I”, this is “yo”.

So you just have to accept that ME GUSTA is different from the others, and wait for the full explanation to appear later on. Glad we got that cleared up anyway!

Me gusta (it pleases me = I like) can link to a huge range of verbs just as the other

expressions we learn before. So, we can say: ME GUSTA COCINAR I like cooking ME GUSTA BAILAR I like dancing ME GUSTA TRABAJAR I like working or maybe for most of us that should be: NO ME GUSTA TRABAJAR I don’t like working NO ME GUSTA BEBER I don’t like drinking Well – it takes all sorts.

Another thing that has to be said to help us poor confused English speakers – in English we use the “-ing” form of the verb with “I like” – cooking, dancing, working, drinking, but in Spanish we don’t do this. If it helps we can think that what we are really saying is: “I like to cook”, “I like to dance” etc. So, after ME GUSTA we always use the infinitives of the verb (the forms ending in –ar, -er, or –ir) and never alter them anything else, despite how much we may be tempted to do so.

Something else we can do now is make even longer sentences with all kinds of things we already now. Here are two more words that can help us to do this: “but” which is PERO, and “also” or “as well” which is TAMBIÉN. Here is an example of the sorts of things we can do: ME GUSTA BAILAR Y ME GUSTA BEBER TAMBIÉN. I like dancing and I like drinking as well.

NECESITO DORMIR PERO VOY A TRABAJAR. I need to sleep but I’m going to work.

I think next lesson we need to widen our range of words as we’re beginning to get a bit limited, but for now here’s a couple of things you can have a go at at home.

How would we say in Spanish? I like talking but I need to work. Can I eat and drink as well?

The daughter of one of Ragmullin’s criminal head men has gone missing. Exiled in Spain he sends his right-hand man to try to locate her.

Meanwhile the bodies of young girls are beginning to turn up in the trenches of the road works which are being carried out all over the town. Is one of the girls the daughter of the Godfather.

Banded back together with her team, and partnered with her trusty confidante DS Mark Boyd, Lottie is tasked with finding the murderer of the girls in the trenches.

Whilst she is investigating the murders a young woman turns up on her doorstep with a little boy. Who is she and why does she appear to know Lottie’s dead husband?

The investigation leads her to a privately-run detention centre for asylum seekers. The man in charge of the centre served with Lottie’s husband in Kosovo. Was Parkers husband as good a man as Lottie thought? Brian, very often coincidence is the only way that many people have of explaining that which is extraordinary.

Most spiritual people know full well that the influences of Spirit are a true part of our destiny. When something very special happens the explanation may be put down to coincidence or thought to be fate. Are you starting to stress out about a receding hair-line? Then good news may be around the corner as a team of scientists in the US have made a breakthrough that could lead to a new way of growing hair. The method focuses around identifying immune system cells that play a key role in hair growth, and the function of 'hair triggers' that can stimulate hair follicles.

The studies have been encouraging as androgenic alopecia, otherwise known to barbers as male-pattern baldness, accounts for over 95% of hair loss in men and two-thirds of men find themselves adjusting their grooming accordingly by the age of 35; that is unless the new science quickly plays catch-up.

Master Barber, Stel Nicolaou, shares some of his tips and advice to aid with the ‘battle of the baldness’. It could be a hairy trip!

Be vigilant Keep an eye out for hair loss early on, whether that's hair on the pillow, or in the plug hole of the shower. Androgenic alopecia results from a by-product of testosterone blocking the hair follicle, and can therefore strike at an early age when testosterone production is high. “Men can begin to notice hair thinning from the early-twenties,” says Nicolaou. “Sticking to a good routine early on will ensure you create a good environment for hair growth.”

Bad shower habits In and out the shower in minutes? That’s fine if people find themselves late for work or an appointment, but it pays to invest time in a shower routine.

Spend at least a few minutes working the suds into the hair and scalp. “This stimulation improves blood flow directly to the scalp, so make sure you are giving your head a thorough massage,” Nicolaou says.

Don’t delay in taking action When it comes to the best styles for thinning hair, men are often tempted by longer cuts in hope that it will appear fuller. But give these misconceptions short shrift. “Shorter cuts work better because they help to seamlessly blend lengths, making the thinner areas less obvious,” Nicolaou advises. Reconsider shaving your head to disguise balding (otherwise known as ‘the reverse combover’) too – it just isn’t necessary.

Poor haircut choice A good barber will know how to work with whatever hair is presented to them, but it doesn’t hurt to arrive armed with ideas. “If you are losing hair from the crown, a rough crop about 1-2 inches on top, styled with a good matte product can help to disguise thinning. Avoid partings too because they accentuate sparser areas.

Instead, maximise on texture to help give the illusion of thickness and bulk.”

Wrong styling products Oil-slick hair is not the answer. Opt for lightweight, matte-effect products, as they help hair to look lustrous while going easy on the grease. Use no more than a 2p-sized amount of product.

Go veggie to lose weight Any vegetarians, living or visiting Spain up to around ten years ago, will appreciate how much has changed for non meat eaters in those intervening years.

I can vividly remember scanning menus in restaurants desperately looking for something other than tortilla or gazpacho to quell my grumbling, empty stomach.

Even ordering a sandwich vegetal, had its inevitable pitfalls, when the waiter would ask if you wanted ham or tuna on it, then look in horror and disbelief, like you were from another planet, when you told him you wanted neither.

These days, following a growing trend from younger Spaniards who are eschewing meat in their diet, the choice for vegetarians is whilst nowhere near the same as in other European countries, at least a lot better than it used to be.

More and more people are switching to a vegetarian diet as new research suggests, it could have a whole host of health benefits, including weight loss.

People who go vegetarian not only lose weight more effectively than those on carnivorous low-calorie diets, but also improve their metabolism by reducing muscle fat, a new study has found.

Losing muscle fat improves glucose and metabolism so this finding is particularly important for people with metabolic syndrome - the medical term for a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity - the researchers said.

Lead author Dr Hana Kahleová, director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington DC, also said the finding could have a

significant impact on Type 2 diabetes.

More than 70 people with Type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to follow either a vegetarian diet or a conventional anti-diabetic diet throughout the study.

The vegetarian diet was primarily vegan, consisting of vegetables, grains, legumes, fruits and nuts, with animal products limited to a maximum of one portion of low-fat yoghurt per day; the conventional diabetic diet followed the official recommendations of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

Both diets contained the same amount of calories per day.

The vegetarian diet was found to be almost twice as

effective in reducing body weight, resulting in an average loss of 6.2kg compared to 3.2kg for the conventional diet.

The team then studied fat-storage tissue in the subjects’ thighs to see how the two different diets had affected subcutaneous, subfascial and intramuscular fat (that is, fat under the skin, on the surface of muscles and inside muscles).

They found that both diets caused a similar reduction in subcutaneous fat. However, subfascial fat was only reduced in response to the vegetarian diet, and intramuscular fat was more greatly reduced by the vegetarian diet.

This is important as increased subfascial fat in patients with Type 2 diabetes has been associated with insulin resistance, so reducing it could have a beneficial effect on glucose metabolism. In addition, reducing intramuscular fat could help improve muscular strength and mobility, particularly in older people with diabetes.

Dr Kahleová said: “Vegetarian diets proved to be the most effective diets for weight loss. However, we also showed that a vegetarian diet is much more effective at reducing muscle fat, thus improving metabolism.

“This finding is important for people who are trying to lose weight, including those suffering from metabolic syndrome and/or Type 2 diabetes. But it is also relevant to anyone who takes their weight management seriously and wants to stay lean and healthy.”

The research is published in full in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

1. Feed yourself with positive thoughts.

2. Be aware of your attitude and mental barriers and thoughts

about exercise and change them. You’re in control. If you think you can - or you think you can’t - you’ll be right.

3. Connect to your reason why. Remind yourself on a daily basis why being fit is important to you.

4. Start simple. Break the goal into smaller manageable steps, like a 20-minute walk in the park.

5. Find an exercise partner. Share the same experiences and challenges.

“This is not about doing it alone,” adds the performance psychologist. “There are other people out there in your situation, find them. They have empathy, they know your challenges, they’re in a similar situation to you. When we share those experiences, we find the strength and encouragement from each other to continue and improve.”

Tom also advises that we should remember our past achievements and use them to spur us on, even when we haven’t prioritised fitness for a while.

“Think back to your previous achievements and know how hard you worked to overcome the challenges that you were faced with then. You did it before, you can do it again,” he says.

“Remember the strength and conviction you have inside you. Focus on that. You never give up. When you set your mind to something, you achieve it. No matter what.”

Dream cruise expecting big turnout

FORD IS building on its rich history of iconic cars and community building as presenting sponsor of the 2017 Woodward Dream Cruise, America’s largest annual celebration of automotive history and culture.

This year’s Woodward Dream Cruise takes place on August 19 and is expected to attract more than 1.2 million people and 40,000 cars.

“Dream Cruise is all about the sheer joy and freedom of the automobile, and Ford has always celebrated car culture,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford Vice President, U.S. Marketing Sales and Service. “From Fiesta to GT, we’re obsessed with making driving fun and we’re committed to celebrating that passion with enthusiasts of all ages in the birthplace of motoring.”

In addition to backing the Dream Cruise, Ford is also bringing back Mustang Alley for its 19th year. This year’s Mustang Alley will be the largest ever, featuring even more examples of the iconic muscle car, including the new 2018 Mustang, which hits dealer showrooms later this year. It’s all electric for Volvo

Dream Cruise. In 1995, the Dream Cruise’s inaugural year, the top-performing Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R was noteworthy for its 300 horsepower 5.8-liter V8.

Today, a 2017 Ford Performance Mustang Shelby GT350R features 526 horsepower and a 5.2-liter flat plane crank V8 that is both the most power-dense and the most powerful naturally aspirated road-going engine in Ford history.

VOLVO CARS, the premium car maker, has announced that every Volvo it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, marking the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine (ICE) and placing electrification at the core of its future business.

The announcement represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification and highlights how over a century after the invention of the internal combustion engine electrification is paving the way for a new chapter in automotive history.

“This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars. It will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm. Full details of these models will be announced at a later date.

These five cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models, representing one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker.

This means that there will in future be no Volvo cars without an electric motor, as pure ICE cars are gradually phased out and replaced by ICE cars that are enhanced with electrified options.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said Mr Samuelsson. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.”

The announcement underlines Volvo Cars’ commitment to minimising its environmental impact and making the cities of the future cleaner.

Volvo Cars is focused on reducing the carbon emissions of both its products as well as its operations. It aims to have climate neutral manufacturing operations by 2025.

The decision also follows this month’s announcement that Volvo Cars will turn Polestar into a new separately-branded electrified global high performance car company. Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars, will lead Polestar as Chief Executive Officer.

Root passes first test with Cook’s help NEW ENGLAND cricket captain Joe Root may well have enjoyed his debut as skipper by leading his team to an emphatic 211 run victory in the First Test Match against South Africa at Lord’s earlier this week, but it was his predecessor that enjoyed it even more.

Opening batsman Alastair Cook, who resigned as Test captain back in February after a successful four and a half years at the helm and 59 Tests in charge that included two Ashes series victories, appears to be having the time of his life now the burdens of captaincy have been removed from his shoulders.

After the Lord’s success, England’s Head Coach Trevor Bayliss said that Cook was certainly more relaxed in his new role. “I was having a laugh watching him in the field, running around in the covers,” he said. “He looked like he was enjoying it. For someone at this stage of his career, that’s a good sign.”

Bayliss also commented that new boy Root was nervous before the match began. “Before this test he (Root) was a little more on edge than I’ve seen him before. We spoke about Joe being himself, getting the message across in his way.

He’s proactive and confident and I thought that came across in the way he led the team. Root and Cook are different characters; they go about their batting in different fashion, so the dressing room was a little different. A lot of the mes-

sages were similar, just delivered in a different way.”

Joe Root himself said that is was more than beneficial to him having the former captain in the team during his first Test in charge. “He (Cook) didn’t want to step on my toes and get in the way but it was great to have him around. I think it was nice for him to look at situations without having to make the decisions himself. It was really good of him to offer support and help when I needed it.”

The 26-year-old Yorkshireman was delighted to put in an individual performance of note with his first innings 190, and is keen for his side to maintain their high

standards when the second Test starts at Trent Bridge today (Friday). “It was nice to walk across Lord’s (after the post-match press conference) and have that feeling of pride, accomplishment and relief as well as getting off to a good start,” he added. “But I am fully aware that there is a lot of hard work to come. I had a little celebration (after the first Test win) nothing too big. That was a very untypical English wicket and I thought we adapted to it well. It will be interesting to see what Trent Bridge has in store for us.”
