The company hopes to set an example which can see their conservationist ideas spread to other parts of Spain.

The campaign was launched on Verkami, one of Europe´s biggest and most successful crowdfunding sites, with the aim of re-launching a project which started three years ago to conserve and revitalise the vineyards in the area.

THE MIJAS DISABILITIES ASSOCIATION (ADIMI) has been given a €15,000 seven-seater van by the IPV Palace Hotel to transport children to the charity’s new care centre.

The handover event was attended by the Mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado, as well as the Councillor for Social Services, Mari Carmen Carmona.

Mayor Maldonado commented, "we, and all the people of Mijas, must thank the hotel’s owner for his commitment to our community. These children will now be able to attend their therapy without transportation being a problem for their families. Without this fantastic donation, many of them would not be able to get to the care centre to get involved in these activities.”

The good deed went ahead after the owner of the IPV Palace, Ignacio Perez, contacted the council explaining he wanted to give something back to the community. After several meetings with the Mayor and Ms Carmona, ADIMI was chosen to receive a donation.

Mr Perez commented, "there is nothing better than helping those who need it and it is a pleasure to be able to contribute dsomething to such a gresat cause.”

He added, “seeing them receiving there van today gives us a sense of happiness you cannot put a price on.”

Neighbourhood noise THE Torremolinos council have launched a new police patrol in the Los Alamos area tasked with ensuring environmental and noise compliance after numerous complaints from local residents.

Paving the way MIJAS Council has announced a further €330,000 investment into public infrastructure for resurfacing and maintaining local roads, many of which haven’t been conditioned for over 30 years.

The van is able to be adapted to carry wheelchairs, and the president of ADIMI, Cristobal Moreno, has explained the charity will do this, saying, "we are going to carry out this upgrade so we can easily transport those with reduced mobility and we will also add more

routes and collections points so we can include all our users.”

The new 2,000 square metre care centre, which has been open since January and cost almost €2 million, will serve 200 users, including many who were previously one the organisation’s waiting list. In addition to early care and occupational workshops already on offer, ADIMI now hope to use their new, larger premises to help adult users, as well as children and young people.

Protests over fire station delay Following a spate of fires across the Costa del Sol, the opening of Nerja’s fire station has been pushed back again, prompting outrage from firefighters.

The station, which is almost fully completed, will now be opened after the summer. The building has been promised since 2009, and was most recently delayed by a disagreement between Nerja’s Council and the Junta de Andalucia. Fire workers have now shown their anger at the latest postponement by hanging banners on the site.

In March, following protests over the delay the town’s Councillor for Civil Protection and Firemen, Oscar Jimenez, provided an update on the building’s progress.

Mr Jimenez explained it was caused by a €90,000 bill for modifications to the building’s original design.

He added a conflict had broken out between Nerja’s City Council and the Junta, who are sharing the costs, over who should pick up the additional bill.

The councillor insisted Nerja’s own government had done everything it can, explaining, “we are waiting for the government in Malaga to open the new Park,", and that "the council has done its duties and our priority is for the new station to be inaugurated and to be able to give provide a good service for Nerja”.

The latest delay comes following a series of recent fires on the Costa del Sol, with two firefighters injured after a warehouse fire in an industrial estate in Malaga last month.

by Jemima Roberts The move is expected to assist around 26,200 families in total, 1,893 of whom were previously ineligible, with aid capped at €500 per home and €1,500 for multiple properties.

Juan Carlose Marquez, Councillor for Finance, said "this Government has made a particular effort to fit this aid into our budget”. He added, “we have put aside €4.3 million for assistance in 2017, including to help those who previously lost their eligibility, but we are prepared to consider increasing this amount to deal with demand if necessary.”

Once the measure is approved in full, it will be published in the Official Province Gazette, after which “the council will set out the deadlines by which residents must make their applications,” according to Marquez.

Those eligible for the aid are those who rent or own a home in the Velez Malaga area who missed paying their tax in any year between 2012 and 2016. The Council is prepared to pay up to 100% of a person’s property tax.

By Jimmy Grayling AN INNOVATIVE Local Police Mediation Service on the Costa del Sol is set to go from strength to strength after exceeding expectations during its first nine months in Benalmadena.

Security Councillor Javier Marin said: “The police mediation service is committed to energise and bring the police force closer to Benalmadena residents, getting involved in resolving neighbourhood conflicts that might affect residents’ peaceful lives.”

It comes as an assessment of the work done by the mediation team to date has been submitted to the town hall, which is delighted with the results.

Clients using the service filled in anonymous satisfaction surveys, with an overwhelming positive response.

The mediation team includes five specially-trained officers who are split between different operational units of the local force.

Their objectives include facilitating resolu-

tion of local disputes to avoid them going to court, thus reducing the use of municipal and police resources, to build better relations between residents and the police, and to encourage communication between both groups.

An analysis of the completed surveys revealed that citizens are more than happy with the new service, which was introduced in November 2016.

Of those questioned, 95 per cent highlighted the rapid response of the system, with disputes typically resolved within a fortnight, with 70 per cent considering the time frame to be “more than adequate.”

Of the cases tackled, 65 per cent were settled in such a way that left both parties happy,

while 35 per cent were “partially resolved.”

A massive 85 per cent of respondents were “very happy” with the service received with the remaining 15 per cent “satisfied.”

Mr Marin added: “These results even came as a shock to the officers themselves, who are now more motivated to keep working to improve the service and the attention that citizens receive.”

Improvements have also been made to the way in which the local police operate based on observations of the mediators, and the council is so happy with the scheme that it has drawn up plans to expand the number of officers trained as mediators.

Animal sanctuary in jeopardy TORREMOLINOS’ troubled Parque Animal’s future is unclear after a recent tender to find new managers for the sanctuary failed to attract any offers.

by Jemima Roberts The council will now reopen the application process, with the building’s current managers, Animal Home, continuing to take in animals in the meantime.

Torremolinos’ Environment Department had offered up to €67,000 to the successful applicant for taking over the shelter. Three companies were invited to take part in the tender, which would see the successful firm collect, transport and shelter the town’s lost and abandoned animals, but not one chose to submit an application. The Council is now said to be considering upping its offer to attract more companies.

Parque Animal had been run from 1998 to 2010 by Carmen Marin, until she was sen-

tenced to nearly four years in prison after Guardia Civil officers found the bodies of dozens of animals in rubbish bins and freezers. The judge found Marin had made a “lucrative” business out of the charity, which benefitted from zero tax, and carried out “culling sessions” on a “massive and unjustified” scale. Marin currently faces further charges of using the charity’s money to fund luxury travel, restaurant trips and cars.

Animal Home have managed the site since the investigation concluded in 2012, although the property continues to be owned

by Parque Animal after it was given a 50year lease in 1998. The fate of the site is now unclear, although a source at the council has reportedly said it is “not unusual” for these types of tenders to receive no applications.

Fighting poverty A PROJECT by La Caixa´s Social Work Project has allocated €103,000 to five projects fighting poverty to help with development and give equal opportunities. The money will be directed to children, young people and families.

Lost at sea

MALAGA Maritime Rescue has launched a rescue mission following the disappearance of a ship carrying 52 immigrants from Morocco. Authorities have deployed several boats and air support to search for the missing vessel.

GREGORIO SERRANO, Andalucian Directorate of Traffic, has announced that by 2018 all Guardia Civil patrols will be equipped with alcohol and drug detectors in a bid to improve road safety.

TWENTY-SEVEN Infoca firefighters spent over two hours taming a wildfire that broke out at the Cerro de la Aljiba in Coin, so far investigators have been unable to identify the cause.

by Jemima Roberts BUDDING entrepreneurs are in luck after free coworking office space has openend up in Rincon de la Victoria.

Around 20 entrepreneurs will benefit from the initiative, which aims to develop businesses through training, personalised mentoring and workshops.

This second edition is expected to attract 20 businesses, which will be innovative and show potential for growth, and is designed for entrepreneurs who have not yet formed their company or are in a very early stage of development.

During the five months from July to December 2017, participants will receive support in starting up of their companies, including work space, training, mentoring, workshops and events.

The Mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, Josefa Carnero, explained the objective of the project is "to promote employment and training, supporting new entrepreneurial initiatives so that they achieve success." He added, "we will continue working to develop schemes that will promote an entrepreneurial culture whose economic benefits directly impact our municipality."

A minimum of 16 and a maximum of 22 entrepreneurs can get involved in the project, each business hosting between one and three people in the space. Registration will remain open until all the places are taken.

MAYOR of Fungirola, Ana Mula, has held a ceremony to recognise the vital work that local police officers have played in the town’s security.

Alongside Joaquin Rueda, Chief of Local Police, the mayor presented awards to several officers for increasing public safety and going above the line of duty.

Mula opened the ceremony by saying that “the Local Police always have a hand extended to help the people of Fuengirola and we want to thank you.”

“Without your collaboration, our society would not function as all of you are an indispensible part of it,” she added.

Organizers reserved a special mention for recently deceased officer Luis Francisco Jimenez, by awarding him with the esteemed white cross award which signifies extraordinary service.

Drought ‘taking its toll’ JOSE FISCAL, Velez Malaga’s Councillor for the Environment, has said the increasing lack of water supplies in La Viñuela reservoir are “beginning to take their toll.”

by Jemima Roberts The Councillor acknowledged recent irrigation cuts, preventing farmers watering their crops one day a week, with the aim of reducing water use by ten per cent, are not working. Councillor Fiscal has said he will now commission a report to ascertain whether the scheme is viable, and if not, will do away with the watering ban.

Farmers are now claiming the drought facing the Costa del Sol is being “aggravated” by the lack of infrastructure to import water from other

areas.

The underground network, which was promised ten years ago, is now said to be started in October. This is doing nothing to quash drought fears over this summer, however, with Malaga city forced to use 1.5 hectometres from La Viñuela reservoir, and 47 hectometres from Guadalhorce.

Following three years of scarce winter rainfall, farmers and politicians are calling on the Junta de Andalucia to sign on off on the plans, which would see three pipelines installed. The first would run from Concepcion to Viñuela),

the second from Iznajar in Cordoba and the third from and Rules in Granada.

Farmers do not believe help will be forthcoming however, with the spokesman from an agricultural group in Antequera saying, "there has been much talk about a water highway, which would connect up the network from Manilva to Nerja. But there are no deadlines.”

The Junta’s General Director of Planning and Management of Public Water, Juan Serrato has said there is enough water to last until the end of the summer.

Caught red-handed

LOCAL POLICE in Motril have dramatically intercepted two men attempting to burgle a house in the town’s centre.

The men, who have now been taken to court, were arrested after officers received a call from a home-owner claiming someone had broken in.

Finding the locks forced and the house turned over, with draws and cabinets emptied of their contents, police heard neighbours shout the suspects had made their way onto the roof. Pursuing the men, they caught one as he fled, finding the other man hidden amongst the roof tiles shortly after. It is reported the alleged thieves both had previous arrests for similar crimes.

Maria Angeles Escamez, Deputy Mayor for Public Security, commented, "once again, thanks to the speedy and diligent work of our Local Police, we have been able to arrest the alleged perpetrators of a burglary in our city.”

Out and proud

by Jemima Roberts THE COSTA DEL SOL came alive with rainbows at International LGTBI Pride Day. While town halls in Marbella and San Pedro Alcantara waved multi-coloured flags from their buildings, Velez Malaga’s Council went a step further by decorating one of its pedestrian crossings with the colours of the rainbow.

The crossing, which is located on Plaza de los Reyes Catolicos, delighted locals and visitors, highlighting the plight of those who suffer homophobia and promoting tolerance. A reading of the council’s manifesto on equality also took place in Plaza de las Carmelitas, where a series of coloured balloons were later released.

Councillor for Social Welfare and Equality, Zoila Martin, and Councillor forYoung People, Maria Santana, were among the crowd, with Councillor Martin commenting, “we are committed to equality policies and to creating a tolerant town, aware of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex people.”

While Councillor Santanaexplained, “the council has joined in with the commemorative events of Pride Day because we believe in a town that promotes equality and individual freedom,” adding, the council “has created an information leaflet that has been handed out to locals and visitors alongside multicoloured bracelets.” She also pointed out Velez Malaga was one of the first municipalities in Andalucia to open an LGTBI information point, located in the town’s Department for Young People.

According to reports by Amnesty International, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersexual rights are stillbeing violated across the world, and in around 80 countries same-sex practices are condemned.

Illegal dump remained open despite fines

by Jemima Roberts NERJA’S illegal dump at Rio de la Miel reportedly attracted fines since its opening in 2000, but this did nothing to bring about its closure.

Alberto Armijo, Deputy Chief of Employment, European Resources and New Technology at the Provincial Government, says he was “never” ordered to close the site by the Junta de Andalucia. Officers from the Guardia Civil have now arrested 12 people, are investigating 25 others and have confiscated 170 items worth €5 million following the scandal.

The investigation, which began in August last year, has also uncovered a potential fraud worth €2.5 million case to cover the costs that would have been incurred if the waste had been disposed of legally. The council say the costs to return the site to normal could now amount to over €10 million.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has labelled the landfill “a genuine environmental disaster” and has been investigating the matter following complaints filed by the Association of Construction and Demolition Waste Management

Companies of Andalusia (AGRECA) and by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Construction Waste Management Companies and Demolition, for illegal and uncontrolled dumping of construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste, pruning waste as well as vegetation, plastics.

The site, which is located in the National Park of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, to the East of Nerja, was previously a working quarry owned by the

council. The area was later used as a dumping ground for 16 years, between 2000 and September 2016.

So far it has been discovered the site was used and managed by a group of companies in Nerja’s construction sector in breach of council rules. These companies were engaged in major collection and transportation of construction and demolition waste, including hazardous wastes, which were subsequently dumped at the illegal landfill site.

Siblings seized TWO SPANISH men, aged 26 and 41, have been arrested in Malaga for trafficking 35 kilograms of marijuana.

The brothers, who were driving separate vans, were stopped by National Police in plainclothes after driving down a restricted road on an industrial estate in Guadalhorce. Apparently, when officers approached the vans they detected an intense cannabis smell.

According to police, when they identified themselves as policemen, one of the drivers attempted to flee the scene. Agents detained the traffickers, and brought the vehicles to the police station for further examination.

Once at the station, police, with the assistance of sniffer dogs, located drugs and €2,030 underneath the floorboards of the vehicle.

The courts have ordered the arrest and detention of the brothers in connection with a drug trafficking offence.

It’s a dog’s life MALAGA CITY COUNCIL has finished its €54,517 dog park in Cortijo Alto after three months.

by Jemima Roberts The works, which were carried out by Delta Ingenieria Infraestructuras y Servicios, were managed by the Municipal Management of Urbanism, in coordination with the district of Teatinos, the Environmental Sustainability area and with the agreement of the Neighborhood Association of Cortijo Alto.

Councillor for the Environment, Raul Jimenez, and the spokesman of the Municipal Citizens Group, Juan Cassa, have visited the dog park, accompanied by the Councillor for the district of Teatinos, Teresa Porras.

The new site is located on a triangular plot measuring 4,500 square metres, located to

the south of the A-357 road. Water supplies, irrigation and a new drainage system have all been installed, as well as new street furniture, signage and landscape gardening.

A new pavement and pedestrian crossings make the park user-friendly, while a gravelled access road improves accessibility for those in cars. For canine companions, waste bins and drinking fountains have been installed, as well as colourful tunnels for their play area.

The work has involved coordinating with the Department of Parks and Gardens, who contributed €18,150 to create the site and install a concreted access road, and new landscaping. The park now also benefits from a new irrigation system and planting scheme.

Historic neglect BENALMADENA council has come under fire by residents for the neglect of three watchtowers after proposing a leisure space within the protected historic area and failing to maintain the early fourteenth century structure.

RONDA residents, merchants and officials were outraged after the city councillors claimed the only shaded part of the town hall public car park for themselves, whilst instructing visitors to park in full sun.

Watching workers maintain the parks

by Jemima Roberts MIJAS’S parks and gardens are in full bloom with the recent addition of more than 1,000 new plants.

The works are part of the Department for Green Spaces’ Beautification Plan which seeks to enhance these areas with various species and colours of flower.

Councillor for Complementary Services, Laura Moreno, has checked out the ongoing work in the area of Doña Ermita. She commented. "this type of work beautifies our green areas in each and every one of the municipality’s gardens, which are there for the enjoyment of locals and visitors.” She added, “we undertake the work we believe is essential for our town to look its best and we have had around 30 people car-

rying out the task.”

Moreno wanted to thank the work done by all the staff who have made these improvements possible, explaining, "we must remember that we are talking about people who are not qualified and who are training at the moment, so I would like to congratulate them for their work. We want to continue training all the staff that use Mijas Complementary Services.”

Among the plants are native species which adapt well to the area’s climate, including adelias, daylily and rosemary, among others. Carmen de Paz, coordinator of Mijas Complementary Services, commented, "this work takes us a little longer than a professional gardener, we are hoping to hire qualified staff and also train others.”

The Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Roy Perez, said some of the tasks, "complements the work carried out throughout the year by our department, which has included, among other actions, the improvement of green areas located at the town’s points of entry, including roundabouts, as well as installing planters in Mijas Pueblo.” He added some of the works, “we continue to carry out are a very important part of the quality of life of our residents.”

The council team have called on everyone to respect the town’s green spaces, saying, “it is very important locals get involved and help maintain these areas. We ask for your collaboration so out parks look the same as when they were first planted out and can be enjoyed by everyone.”

Forty evacuated in blaze

TENS of people on the Costa del Sol have been evacuated from their homes following an early morning fire in Torrox’s Barranco de Perez and Loma de Paniagua.

Firefighters rushed to the scene, battling the flames which were rapidly spread by the wind. After covering three hectares of land, the extinguished the blaze, after removing people from six houses in the area. Home-owners were allowed back into their properties at around 3pm, although one house is reported to have been very badly damaged. It is not known how the fire started.

Elsewhere on the Costa del Sol, a recent forest fire in Benagalbon was extinguished with the help of two helicopters and 27 infoca workers after five hectares of scrubland and olive grove caught fire. In Velez Malaga another fire broke out in a rural area but was quickly extinguished.

Summer sales THE Consumer Union of Andalucia (UCA) has reported that Malagueños spend an average of €67 in the summer sale, putting them at €7 above the national average.

The hotel chain’s mascot will be the protagonist of the campaign, which last year saw 1,259 drawings submitted. The lucky winner of first prize will receive two nights’ stay in a double room for them and their parents and siblings in any of the group’s hotels, while the second prize winner will be given a one night stay. The child receiving third prize will be given a series of Delfi products.

Servigroup’s children's clubs are well-known for providing their young guests with a variety of activities and will provide all the materials necessary to enter a painting or drawing in the competition. Entrants are asked to fill in a form with their name, the name of the competition and a signed authorisation form from their parent or guardian.

Creativity kids have until September 15 to submit their artwork. Participants must be aged between two and twelve-years-old and can submit a maximum of two artworks each. Those wishing to get involved can send their entry by email in JPEG format, with a maximum size of 1 MB to clubdelfi@servigroup.es. Alternatively, they can drop them off at any of the group’s 16 hotels, or send them by post.

Killer cop faces jail Couple try to buy baby

by Jemima Roberts A MEMBER of the Guardia Civil, known only as Sergeant Miguel, faces four and a half years in prison for killing three and injuring seven in a car accident.

Three people remain in a serious condition in hospital after the policeman, who is accused of driving at high speed and swerving between lanes on the A7 outside Torremolinos, hit two cars. The officer, who was previously the subject of six internal police investigations, and who was fined €650 in 2015 for threaten-

ing his neighbour, claims he was driving at a normal speed.

Sergeant Miguel is also accused of trying to flee the scene of the accident, hurdling the central reservation and escaping into a pine forest. Two passing members of the National Police chased and caught up with him. He allegedly told the officers “I wasn’t driving, I was with another member of the Guardia Civil. The accident had nothing to do with me.” When asked in court why he fled, Sergeant Miguel said at that moment he “just wanted to die.”

He then allegedly tried to resist arrest after being breathalysed and found to have 0.47 and 0.50 milligrams of alcohol per litre of air in the two tests carried out. Once at the police station, Sergeant Miguel also tested positive for cocaine in a drugs test.

The accused, who protests his innocence, says he had drunk one beer at a bar before driving and swears on the loves of his three children he did not take cocaine, blaming the false positive on several coca colas and red bull drinks he had consumed before the test.

The trial continues.

Car accident victims hospitalised TWO CHILDREN, aged nine and twelve-years-old, are in hospital after two vehicles collided head on at kilometre 10 of the A-387 in Mijas.

Two adults, aged thirty-six and thirty-nine-years-old also remain in the Costa del Sol Hospital after one of the cars fell three metres at around 8pm. Passers-by called the emergency services, with Guardia Civil and health workers arriving quickly at the scene and transferring the injured to hospital.

Round-the-clock FIVE OFF-DUTY firemen, relaxing with relatives on Cabopino beach in Marbella, used two garden hoses to extinguish a house fire after seeing smoke rising from a beachside property.

Tobacco traffickers TWO MEN have been arresting in San Roque after the Guardia Civil discovered 11,500 packets of contraband tobacco on board two separate vehicles. Both men are to be charged for the crime of smuggling.

Death in Malaga A WOMAN, aged 77, died on La Malagueta beach, La Caleta last Friday. Civilians rescued her from the water and attempted resuscitation but upon arrival medical personnel pronounced her dead.

A COUPLE in their seventies have been arrested for allegedly handing over €100,000 to a young Russian woman in exchange for her eight-month-old baby.

The child has now been placed in the care of child protective services in Malaga after the man and woman tried to take it in, reportedly because they wanted an heir to their fortune of several properties.

A lawyer and a Russian interpreter have also been arrested for their crime of allegedly helping to disguise the child’s paternity.

National Police officers started investigating in May when the couple took the child to a doctor to test for a congenital disease. The doctor asked to see the baby’s biological mother and became suspicious, alerting child protection services.

It was found the real mother was a thirty-year-old Russian woman, who had travelled to Spain a month before giving birth in a private clinic and falsely registering the child’s father. She was said to be living in one of the couple’s properties, in a converted garage measuring around 25 square metres.

Two arrested over assault NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested two men, aged 37 and 31, over the alleged assault of two brothers fleeing a stabbing outside a nightclub in Torremolinos.

The accused have now given statements at a police station and been released pending a decision by the judicial authority.

The alleged assault came after two brothers, aged 39 and 48 fled after the stabbing of two bouncers in Los Alamos club in Torremolinos. The older brother is said to have slashed the doormen with a razor blade after his younger brother was thrown out of the club, leaving both bouncers in intensive care in Hospital Clinico Universitario.

The alleged perpetrator was watching motorcycling racing with his brother on June 11 when the younger man supposedly became disruptive and was asked to leave at around 8pm. Both brothers exited the club and as the bouncers turned to walk back inside, the 48-year-old stabbed them in their backs, slashing one guard once and the other twice.

The men fled towards the beach where they were surrounded and assaulted by a group of around 50. Following investigations, police managed to identify two members of the mob and placed them under arrest.

The National Police saved the brothers from the attack before arresting them for attempted murder. The younger sibling has been released pending charges.

BA cabin crew begin 16-day strike

by Tahnee Wright Some British Airways cabin crew began a 16-day strike on Saturday in a prolonged pay dispute.

Members of BA's ‘mixed fleet’ cabin crew - those who work on both long-haul and short-haul flights - have been in conflict with the company since last year over wage offers which the Unite trade union has described as ‘poverty pay’.

Despite the pay dispute being resolved, Unite said the walkout is in response to sanctions on union members

involved in previous industrial action - 1,400 mixed fleet members who had been on strike previously having seen bonus payments and travel concessions removed.

‘Customers will take a dim view and a great British brand risks being further tarnished. We call on British Airways to drop the threats and drop the sanctions and resolve this long-running dispute,’ Unite national officer Oliver Richardson said in a statement.

The mixed fleet staff make up about a third of the BA's total cabin crew of

around 16,000, although not all members of the crew will take action.

BA again warned of ‘consequences’ for those who went on strike, but said all customers would reach their destinations.

‘We have set out the consequences for crew if they take strike action,’ they said in a statement, adding ‘the purposes of these consequences are to encourage crew to come to work.’

A full schedule will run from Gatwick and London City, while a small number of Heathrow services will be merged, BA said.

William and Harry re-dedicate Diana’s grave British Princes William and Harry attended a private service last Saturday to re-dedicate the grave of their mother Princess Diana on what would have been her 56th birthday.

The service took place at Diana's resting place on the Althorp Estate, her family's ancestral home in central England, where the princes were joined by William's wife Kate and members of Diana's family.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion conducted the ceremony.

With the 20th anniversary of her death approaching, both William, 35 and Harry, 32, have spoken publicly about the impact that losing their mother has had on their lives.

Both princes have become prominent mental health campaigners and William said in April the shock of losing his mother still lingered.

‘You never get over it, it's such an unbelievably big moment in your life that it never leaves you. You just learn to deal with it,’ he said.

Meanwhile, Harry said he had come close to a ‘complete breakdown’ on several occasions and had sought counselling in his late twenties to help deal with the grief of losing Diana.

Second Marbella meeting for plastic and aesthetic Surgeons doubles attendance

Marbella’s assets proved a big draw forplasticand aesthetic surgeons, attracting 110 specialists from around the world to attend the second edition of the Marbella International Plastic Surgery Summer School (MIPSS).

The number is more than double the amount of delegates that attended last year. The medical meeting, organised by Ocean Clinic Marbella, mixes high-level knowledge sharing with a vibrant social programme.

It took place from June 22-24 at the H10Andalucia Plaza Hotel, with live surgeries broadcasted into the auditorium from Ocean Clinic’s in-house operating theatre, located on Av Ramon y Cajal.

Ocean Clinic Medical Director, Dr. Kai Kaye says: “We have been blown away by the success of the summer school, which, after one year, has doubled in size and attracted participants from over 20 countries.

Some travelled from as far away as America.

“The meeting has also been endorsed by five separate professional associations, including the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, which is testament to the high scientific level of the education.”

MIPSS’ education track included 35 lectures and three live surgeries from an international panel of speakers representing more than 10 countries. Topics included new concepts in facial rejuvenation, body contouring, breast augmentation, reconstructive and transgender surgery.

Because the meeting was sold out, it was necessary to move from previous venue Hotel Fuerteto a new larger venue. H10Andalucia Plaza Hotel played host to the conference sessions as well as a poolside drinks reception and gala dinner.Other social activities included partying at Pangea Club in Puerto Banus to celebrate San Juan.

Says Dr. Kaye: “Everyone had a wonderful time; experiencing the fireworks and bonfires of San Juan was a particular highlight.

“We already have lots of interest in next year’s MIPSS, although we are limiting places to 125 to maintain the intimate atmosphere, that we believe best facilitates collaboration between peers.”

If you have lost a deposit when a property developer went bust, help may be at hand A COMPANY set up to act for those who have lost money due to Spanish construction company liquidation expects to recover millions of euros for clients.

Spanish Legal Reclaims has used a number of highly experienced lawyers and financial experts to study the effects of a law which gives those who have lost money when making deposits on properties a possibility to recover their losses.

During the boom years, many expatriates from all over Europe as well as Spanish nationals flocked to put down deposits on properties before they were built, anxious to ensure that they would own a brand new apartment or house.

When the depression hit, one of the biggest areas of loss was in the property construction business and many companies all across Spain went under without completing the work and leaving individuals out of pocket from any amounts from €20,000 to €200,000 or even more.

When this happened, many of the people affected took legal action against property developers. Most of them won the court cases but, as developers had no money left the claimants received nothing except lawyer’s fees.

Most were convinced that these - in many cases devastating – losses were final and there was no chance of ever recovering any of the money involved, but the Spanish Supreme Court which can work slowly, recognised the problem and a relatively recent ruling has opened the door to the possibility of obtaining refunds from the banks involved which do have the funds to pay claimants.

It has been decided that if a bank accepted a deposit in respect of a new build property, they had a responsibility to protect those funds by way of bank guarantees, separate insurance policies or placing the funds in escrow accounts.

If the bank did this, then money would be safe but if they

didn’t -as happened in most cases -then they can be sued for a refund of that money.

This is where Spanish Legal Reclaims comes in as they are prepared to review each case on its merits and if there appears to be a good chance of recovering funds, they will take on the case on a no win no fee basis.

Their legal experts and financial advisers will have to undertake a great deal of work to establish liability, especially as many as 60 per cent of all who lost money paid their deposits to lawyers rather than directly to the banks.

This company however has established an almost fool proof method of tracing the funds- even if deposits were made more than 10 years ago - and actually establishing which bank was involved in the transaction.

As the legal system in Spain is slow, they can’t show large numbers of cash refunds although they have had a small number when the banks overlooked making an appeal but they are confident that in the majority of cases, a first decision by a court will be upheld on appeal.

They must be confident as all of this work has been done without any charge to customers!

Banks are rich and they generally employ the best lawyers but if the law is in favour of the victim and those acting for that victim know what they are doing, the likelihood of success is great.

Barbecue day raises €1,000

Red carpet event LA CALA DE MIJAS LIONS continue to celebrate their 2016/2017 centenary year with an awards ceremony celebrating school children who give back to their communities.

The charity has created the Legacy Project, a scheme aimed at helping as many young people as possible, both in schools and in other organisations providing sporting and playgroup activities.

As part of this, the two high schools in La Cala, IES La Cala and IES Torre Almenara, were invited to select one student from each of their four classes who had contributed the most to school life during the past year in a non-academic way.

The prizes were presented to the eight students during a ceremony at the Casa de Cultura, with each of the young people receiving €100 and a specially made individual plaque, produced by the Encina Laura Establishment in Alhaurin de la Torre, a centre for young people with learning difficulties.

Following an introduction by President of the La Cala Lions Club, Paul Butler, the two head teachers, Marilo Castillo, Head of IES Torre Almenara, and Alberto Bermudez Fernandez, Head of IES La Cala, made short presentations explaining the reasons for selecting the prize-winners.

Councillor Laura Moreno Marin then gave a short speech thanking the Lions for their contributions to life in La Cala, before presenting the prizes and plaques. Attendees then enjoyed the rest of the evening with drinks and tapas.

THE MOLLINA branch of the Royal British Legion have cooked up a storm at their fundraising Armed Forces Day barbecue, raising hundreds of Euros for charity.

David and Heather Grey planned and prepared the event, which was attended by more than 100 guests, who were entertained by the Saydo Singers, a male voice choir which was performing its first concert since taking on female members.

After the entertainment, the barbecue was served and an afternoon of fun and fundraising ensued, which involved receiving a very generous donation from the Mollina Park Neighbourhood Association.

Anne Roberts, presenting the trophy to the winner of the accosiation’s photographic competition, said,“this trophy was commissioned to remind us of the seven years dedicated service Christine Watson gave to the British Legion, before her early demise 3 years ago. It also serves to remind us that many British Legion Activists are not ex-military but spouses, families and friends.”

Though officially on summer break, the Mollina branch is already planning its next event, a Falklands Memorial Dinner on September 14. Chicano actor and director loves to be in Spain

by Michael Cano WITH homes in New York and Marbella, American actor and film director Damien Chapa seems to have escaped the celebrity limelight despite long term success.

He agreed to give an exclusive interview to RTN and to explain some of his achievements which include four starring roles in films which between them have earned $250 million (€220 million).

In addition, one of those films, Blood In, Blood Outwas for a while the highest grossing Latin film of all time.

Born in Ohio in 1963, he explained that his father was, in his words considered to be a “small time gangster” whilst his mother was a “very beautiful woman yet had a drinking issue who left when I was quite young”.

From the age of 15, Damien looked after himself and eventually joined the US Navy.

“The first time I visited Spain was when I was a petty officer in the 80s, I will never forget coming in on the ship USS Suribachi anchored about by Palma de Mallorca. I heard a song in French playing on the radio which I will never forget.

“Nor will I forget how the beautiful Spanish people made me feel. It was truly paradise on the Islands. I always wanted to come back and promised I would. The feeling in Spain is like no other.”

As well as acting, Damien who writes and directs documentaries and features explained “The last film I made was with Angus MacFadyen and the brilliant actress who has her roots in Spain Paz De La Huerta.

“It was calledVatos Locos 2 (Crazy Dudes), after a Los Angeles street gang. It’s a gangster picture and I am now writing a script called Luz which is about an American blue collar postman (Iraq war veteran who suffers PTSD) who by chance meets a beautiful Spanish aristocrat as he delivers mail to her home and they find themselves in a peculiar friendship.

“I will be filming Luz in Spain in October and I am looking for the lead, a beautiful charismatic Flamenco dancer with an aristocratic background.”

When asked about his current life, Damien was very open and responded “I travel from New York, to LA, to Spain and other parts of Europe now. I have a lot going on and if I don’t have things going on. I make things happen as I cannot stand idle time.

“I guess I am a workaholic. Someone asked me what I do for a living. I guess they asked me that because I do so many things, direct, act, produce, distribute and yes even cinematography.

“So when they asked me what do you really do I just said I make things happen. Which is really all a producer does.”

Damien, of mixed heritage including Italian, Mexican and Native American has so many stories that this interview will be run over two weeks in order to allow him to expand on his love for Spain and the Spanish people and to give more details of his fascinating life.

Valentina Radu, dedicated to the cause of Marbella residents

VOLUNTEER, business development executive, former politician or just Valentina Radu, which is the best definition of a local expatriate who decided to integrate in the multi-cultural Costa del Sol community?

Born during the communist era in Bucharest, Romania, Valentina studied foreign languages, graduated from two universities and found work with Martinez Echevarria Lawyers, a company based in Puerto Banus and set up in 1983.

She is fluent in three languages (English, Romanian and Spanish) but the journey to Spain did not end in Banus, as in 2012 the Manilva council gives her ‘a politician’s position’ at the town hall heading the departments of Town Planning and Foreign Residents.

For four years she was involved in helping local expatriates to integrate in Manilva and by doing so she was probably the best integrated expatriate of all. A politician´s job is never easy, but she remembers it with a smile and believes she left her mark on the community.

In her spare time -if she finds any - she is a volunteer in the local health centre as an interpreter, volunteer for Civil Protection either assisting locally or undertaking mountain rescue and is the coordinator of the Puerto Banus Business Association, all this after doing her day job of business developer at Martinez Echevarria Lawyers.

“A day in my life is never boring, I can advise an expat client on the details of purchasing a property or recovering a lost off plan deposit, I can translate at the police station for a robbery case and then I can record my TV show with Nicole King on RTV Marbella and in the afternoon, I will probably have a meeting with one of the local Banus businesses” she told RTN. “I love to give back something to the community that took me in. That is why I always try and help as many people as possible and most importantly, integrate other expats into the wonderful Spanish culture.”

Unfortunately, the financial crisis, the bureaucracy in Spain and other factors sometimes gave a bad impression of Spain or the Costas, but for Valentina it was a wonderful world of possibilities.

Also, in her work with the Puerto Banus Association the members are all trying to work together, to keep Marbella and the Port safe and clean and to the high standards expected.

Valentina would like to see all of the local businesses who are not a part of the Association to register as there is free membership and working together it should be possible to provide a great service to the community.

She also collaborates with the National Police through their Marbella office by delivering information and talks to local residents about safety measures and precautions to take to prevent robberies.

Valentina also give talks in high-schools regarding bullying, drugs or domestic violence and holds periodical meetings with the citizenship participation office of the police to explain resident´s concerns.

The world has changed beyond recognition in my lifetime. The English novelist L. P Hartley penned those immortal words, “The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.” My generation journeyed in a time machine to a foreign country. Frankly, it is a bewildering place. George Orwell’s novel, 1984, is no longer in the library’s fiction department. In 1949 the prophet accurately described the all-seeing Big Brother mediamanipulated nightmare world we have inherited.

Less well known is Edgar Cayce (1877 – 1945). The American mystic’s prophecies were so many and accurate they simply cannot be dismissed as coincidence.

His readings accurately foretold the Great Depression of 1929, events relating to both world wars; even the deaths of two U.S Presidents. As these foresights are now in the past they can only be a source of wonder to us. But, it should be a matter of interest that Cayce foretold of events yet to occur. During his readings the seer correctly described our ‘brave new world’. Remember, back then, everything we now take for granted was the stuff of science fiction and fantasy.

It was a time when no one could have predicted the collapse of the Soviet colossus. When in 1932 Cayce was questioned about political and economic trends in future Europe he zeroed in on Russia.

He saw Europe as a disintegrating region.

Cayce also foretold of nations controlled by a manipulative cultish global elite and their banking cartels.

The American described a post-Communist Russia as being ‘a thorn in the side of financial powers that were organising themselves against the good of humanity.’

He described a Europe of electorally neutered people mismanaged ‘for the gratification of a few, irre-

spective of any other man’s right’. Can anyone better describe the European Union today?

Anti-globalist Marine le Pen sums it up; “the divide is no longer between right and left, but between the patriots and the globalists’.

Cayce talked of Europe being reborn phoenix-like and in his prophecies Russia plays a pivotal role. Without question, post-Communist Russia has reinvented itself.

Independent and forging the world’s greatest trading blocs Putin’s Russia outmanoeuvres and outguns the West. Meanwhile, Washington and its European vassals are asphyxiated by perpetual bondage to banks and receivership whilst their trading options diminish by the day.

There is nothing that is happening today that wasn’t accurately prophesied by Edgar Cayce. He did predict that a Third World War

was possible. But, without elaborating, he said before he passed away, “In Russia there comes hope in the world not as that as sometimes termed of the Communistic, or Bolshevik, no; but freedom, freedom.”

The lack of courtesy and service in some of the business establishments on the Costa is appalling. But there is a rudeness that offends and a rudeness that can sometimes be regarded as amusing and eccentric behaviour, and it reminded me recently of some pub landlords I have encountered in the UK. One landlord in Falmouth had a hatred of Londoners, but nobody seemed to know the reason why.

An acquaintance of mine had a friend visit him from London and took him for a meal at the establishment in question and because of his obvious cockney accent, he was warned about engaging the publican in conversation.

After they had eaten, their host made his way over to ask if everything had been to their satisfaction, at which point the Londoner, in spite of his friend’s advice, asked why it was that he disliked people from that city so much.

The place went deathly quiet as the landlord, a large man, rested his meaty arms on the table, and almost nose to nose, hissed, “Do you see this”, pointing to his bald head. “Your lot were evacuated here during the war and brought their head lice with ‘em. I had nice curly hair in those days, but I had to have it shaved off and it never grew back. Does that answer your question?”

Another publican of my acquaintance in Fowey, had a particular aversion to anyone he termed ‘La-di-da’.

He had one of those pie warmers on the counter, the ones with a slowly revolving rack, and when a customer hailed him thus: “I say my man, are those pasties hot?” back came the reply: “They ought t’be boy, they’ve bin in there for three weeks!”

Years later in a neighbouring village in Suffolk, there was a character that had become infamous with a Basil Fawlty type reputation. Nevertheless people would come from miles around to eat and drink at his establishment, a very pretty olde worlde inn.

We took some friends one evening who had never visited the pub, then having perused the menu one of them asked what the sirloin steak was like.

Having just served an adjoining table, the landlord pirouetted and without a word, whipped the plate away from under the startled diner’s nose and plonked it down on our table. “Like that” he said smoothly, before returning the plate to the disbelieving customer.

I had the weirdest of dreams last night. More of a nightmare really. In it, the RTN team decided they wanted someone to answer questions they were receiving in ever-increasing numbers from people visiting the Costas. After much debate, it was decided that I should be the one to deal with them.

Reluctantly, I agreed. After trawling through a bunch of barmy queries, I bashed out my first “Ask Uncle Barry” column.

Tracy, Blackpool: My mum, dad and I got on a bus heading from La Cala to Benidorm central, but the driver refused to take a €50 note.

Then a pushy little man with a white goatee shoved us out the way, paid our fares with some sort of travel card, and told us that we could repay him at the end of the journey by buying him tobacco.

When we got off the bus, he marched us to a fag shop and made us pay almost €9.00 for a pouch of Golden Virginia. As the total bus fare for the three of us would have been €4.50 we reckon we were ripped off by a conman.

Uncle Barry: The “pushy little man”, Tracy, was me. Your dad was holding up the bloody bus, and it didn’t help that he was being extremely rude to the driver. Only an imbecile would tender a €50 note on a bus.

Getting your dad to buy me the tobacco was my way of teaching him a lesson.

Kayleigh, Bolton: We came to Benidorm at Easter and could not believe how packed the streets were with foreigners. Is there a good time to come to the resort and not have to mix with people all waffling in foreign?

Uncle Barry: The last time I checked an atlas, Kayleigh, Benidorm was in Spain. So, not surprisingly, the streets, bars and restaurants were full of SPANISH people. If you only want to hear English spoken I suggest you go to Scarborough for your holidays. Or the Falklands.

Tony, Southend: When we were in Torremolinos, the missus threw a shoe at my head as I was standing on the first floor balcony of our holiday apartment. I ducked. It flew into the street and hit a fella with a white goatee on his bald bonce. Instead of throwing it back to me, he walked off with it. It was one of a pair of brand-new loafers. Are all people in Spain so rude?

Uncle Barry: The “fella with a white goatee” was me, Tony. That shoe hurt. I carried it half a mile down the road, and dropped it in a garbage bin. If you feel compelled to have drunken rows with your “missus” in public, expect to suffer the consequences.

Chantelle, Barking: I was walking with some friends along the beachfront when a tree came out of nowhere and I was knocked on my butt by a low branch. Can I sue Benidorm council for allowing dangerous impediments to take root in public places?

Uncle Barry: You can try, Chantelle, but you’ll find that Spain does not have the same compensation culture as the US and Britain, so you have

as much chance of getting a pay-out as the Pope has of falling pregnant.

In future, watch where you’re walking!

At this point I awoke in a cold sweat, and vowed that if anyone ever asks me to become proper “agony uncle” I’ll take a dive off of my 31st floor balcony.

She’s a day tripper LUX MUNDI Fuengirola has announced its upcoming excursions, taking in the best of Spanish culture from across Andalucia.

The famous white-washed mountain village of Frigiliana is the setting of Lux Mundi’s next trip, to the town’s Festival of three cultures on Friday August 25. The charity invites participants to “come and enjoy the large market of the three cultures,” adding, “you can buy from local craftsmen, listen to the concert and visit the two tapas routes whilst enjoying the theatrical street entertainment.”

Tickets cost €20 and proceeds go towards fundraising. The excursion departs from the Fuengirola Feria Ground at 6.25pm or the bullring at 6.30pm and returns from Frigiliana at 1am.

From Monday, September 25 to Friday 29, explorers will have the chance to check out Caceres, Badajoz and Merida on a four-day trip.

Departing on Monday from the Fuengirola Feria Ground at 7.55am or Bullring at 8am, the group will stop for breakfast and coffee en route, arriving at the hotel at approximately 2.30pm, before enjoying a free afternoon in Caceres.

Tuesday will also be spent with free time in Caceres, before leaving for Merida on Wednesday, where the grop will

enjoy three hours to explore, as well as time for lunch. The afternoon will see them head off to Badajoz for a two hour guided visit.

On Thursday, participants will set off by bus to Guadalupe Monastery, as well as an afternoon visit to Trujillo. Heading back on Friday, the group will leave the hotel at 10.30am, stopping for lunch and coffee, before arriving back in Fuengirola at approximately 6pm.

The tour will be staying at Hotel AH Agora, Caceres, costing €348 pp for a double room or €398 pp for a single room.

A deposit of €100 is required when booking and the final payment is due before the first week of September.

On Wednesday November 8, history buffs are in for a treat with a visit to the Alcala la Real and Fortress of Mota, located between Granada, Cordoba and Jaen. Considered the last fortress of Al Andalus between the Nazari kingdom of Granada and the Christian kingdoms, it is an important city in Spanish history.

Tickets cost €39, with proceeds going towards fundraising,

and include transport, travel insurance, a guided visit inside and outside the fortress, a visit to the cheese factory and sampling. Lunch is also included. The trip departs from the Fuengirola Feria Ground at 8.20am or bullring at 8.25am and returns from Alcala la Real at approximately 5pm.

With the festive season in mind, Lux Mundi have put together a trip to Montefrio and the Monumental Nativity on Wednesday December 13, where participants will have the chance to visit one of the top 10 National Geographic views.

Tickets cost €39 and include transport, travel insurance, tourist train, a guided visit to Montefrio, a visit to olive museum and lunch.

After lunch, there is a stop in Huetor Tajar to visit the Monumental Nativity. The trip departs the Fuengirola Feria Ground at 8.25am or bullring at 8.30am and returns from Montefrio at approximately 5pm.

Mijas nights MIJAS is set to host a summer of fun in its IX edition of Vive Mijas de noche (live Mijas at night.)

Among the activities on offer will be a tapas route in Mijas Pueblo, a handicraft fair, as well as live music and culinary events.

Fuensanta Lima, the town’s Councillor for Tourism, explained, "today we are launching the return of this event which seeks to boost our municipality’s economy in its various areas.”

The various live performances will take place in Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo, Parque de la Butibamba in La Cala and Parques Maria Zambrano and Andalucia in Las Lagunas. Ms Limas commented, "we have this year started to host performances in two different parks in Las Lagunas because we hope these talent-filled nights will boost commerce in different areas.”

The events will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Mijas Pueblo, Fridays in Las Lagunas and Wednesdays in La Cala, so "each area has its own day for evening music and leisure activities, which is important for visitors.”

In addition to live music, locals and tourists will be able to enjoy a craft fair in

the Plaza Virgen de la Peña every Tuesday and Thursday, where they can visit 20 craft stalls and try typical local fritters.

The musical events, beginning at 9.30pm, will offer flamenco, jazz, pop, ballet and salsa, while on some evenings 35 groups and artists will get involved.

In total, 70 performances will take place over the summer.

Ms Lima thanked “all the members of the department for helping these intiatives go ahead, as well as all the artists and talented people of Mijas who will join us on these nights in July and August.” She concluded by encouraging “everyone to enjoy Mijas at night in these unique settings with local artists.”

Negatives, questions and “you” forms

First of all we need to check last week’s homework. Here are the sentences I asked you to translate, with the right answers.

I don’t want to speak English.

“No quiero hablar inglés” I’m not going to open the door.

“No voy a abrir la puerta” I can’t cook very well.

“No puedo cocinar muy bien” I need to work a little.

“Necesito trabajar un poco”.

The first three sentences are negative and therefore start with “No” despite the fact that in each of the English sentences the negatives are formed in three different ways. Obviously in these articles we can’t hear the spoken sentences, but one thing to point out here is that when one word ends in a vowel sound and the next word begins with a vowel sound, they run together when spoken. So “quiero hablar”, would sound like “quieroablar” (as the letter H is silent) and “voy a abrir” would become “voyabrir” with the two “a” sounds merging together. It’s important to get practice at tuning in to spoken Spanish so that you can start recognizing these features of the language.

Now let’s see what else we can do

with the words we have covered so far.

We have learnt that “I words” (QUIERO, PUEDO, NECESITO, VOY A) can go in front of infinitive verbs to form really useful sentences about what we want, need, can or are going to do. We have also seen that by placing the word “no” in front, we can make these sentences negative.

Now we are going to see how these same basic forms can be turned into questions. This is incredibly easy; in fact it’s so easy people are inclined not to believe it and try to complicate things. To make these sentences into questions, all you have to do is give your voice a questioning intonation.

When writing we place a question mark at the end and an upside down question mark at the beginning of the sentence, to indicate the same thing. For example: PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA means “I can open the door”.

If I say exactly the same sentence making my voice sound questioning, I’ve changed it to “Can I open to the door?” which is written in Spanish ¿PUEDO ABRIR LA PUERTA? Yes, it really is that simple! Let’s see what else we can do.

“PUEDO VOLVER MAÑANA” “I can return tomorrow.” “¿PUEDO VOLVER MAÑANA?”

“Can I return tomorrow?”

Obviously in the case of ¿Quiero?

(Do I want?) and ¿Voy a? (am I going to?) it is more difficult to find sentences that make sense, so as a special little bonus today we will learn the words for “You want” and “You are going to” – which can instantly be used to mean “Do you want?” and “Are you going to?”

“You want” is “QUIERES” and “you are going to” is “VAS A” so therefore: “Do you want to cook?” is “¿QUIERES COCINAR?” “Are you going to sleep?” is “¿VAS A DORMIR?” Just to recap what we have just done – QUIERO means “I want”, and by changing the final letter we can turn

it into QUIERES meaning “you want”.

Something similar happens with VOY A “I’m going to”, we can turn it into “VAS A” to mean “you are going to”. I think I should mention as well, that these refer to an informal “you”, as in Spanish we can be formal and informal in the way we address people. However nowadays in Spain these distinctions are not so important so we’ll talk in more detail about that later.

This all might sound rather simple, but you may not have yet realized just what potential we have opened up already, just by learning these small changes. It is not necessary to learn all the whys and wherefores of how verbs change in order to start forming all kinds of sentences! So far we have only used six verbs and six “I” or “you” expressions so I think next week we’ll need some more verbs and other simple words to spread the net even wider. In the meantime though – here’s your homework: What do these mean in English? No quiero volver a casa hoy. ¿Quieres bailar conmigo? Voy a hablar con mi amigo. ¿Vas a beber vino? No necesito comer ahora. ¿Puedo aprender más?

Lou's Homecoming by Stephan A. Onisick "Sometimes, art echoes life. The uncanny death of the guest actor in the episode (Remember Me from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman)resonated deeply within me. It paralleled the deaths of my father and half-brother, Lou." Stephan works as a Sharepoint Developer with Analytical Mechanics Associate contracted to NASA's International Space Station in Huntsville. This story goes back twenty years to 1997 when the first episode of "Lou's Homecoming" was written. Twenty years down the line the draft was revisited, expanded and finally published as an ebook.

It was January 1989. Our author was 38, married and living in Birmingham, Alabama when he received an unexpected call from someone called Lou Onisick claiming to be a relative. Stephan's father had been born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania in 1912. He had worked down the coal mines. His parents had come from Ukraine and they lived in a Polish community. It seemed that the father had been married before and Stephan was aware of having a halfbrother called John.

The father had Parkinson's disease and dementia and was living in a nursing home in West Virginia in declining health.

Lou had been trying to contact his father. He was 8 when his father left home. He was now 54. Father had provided some child support for Lou and his brother Bill which "could never have satisfied a boy's need for his father." plant engineer for a valve company and worked in the same factory as his brother Bill, outside of Charlotte.

Stephan was protective of his mother initially who he described as a worrier and a doom and gloomer. He didn't want to mention his newly acquired half-brothers until they had made further contact and planned a visit which was arranged weeks later. Photos were exchanged and a few calls made.

The meeting of this extended family caused nerves and anxiety as well as excitement for Stephan and no doubt the others. Although Stephan describes his family in a positive way he seems more at ease with the family pets. "Dogs may be the best part of our shared hereditary." He informs us of his preference for dogs rather than people. Perhaps it's just this: "Their needs are simple, and their agendas are hilariously obvious."

We are told about Lou's "uncanny" resemblance to his father, although he was slightly taller and more gentle. He was reserved but also described as being a devoted father and husband which Stephan states was not an Onisick inherited trait! We are told that he was loved and well-respected in his community.

As you might expect, the family reunion proved to be an emotional experience considering that Lou had not seen his father for over 45 years. Father was "conscious in spurts" but seemed to recognize Lou who he described as a fire-

cracker which made Lou cry and the others were choked up emotionally. Peggy, his daughter told Stephan that Lou was a forgiving person and very even-tempered.

"He didn't have a father model, but yet he became a model father." The ending is inevitably sad but there is a sense of closure and with that, a feeling of satisfaction and forgiveness when we are told that he "had made peace with his past."

"Lou had the magnanimity to forgive a father who abandoned him." Perfectly readable but short.

It is difficult to engage with Lou sadly because he seems flimsy and it would have been better to have discovered much more about the reasoning behind seeing father before he died and making his peace after such a long time.

Protorexics: men obsessed with protein INSTAGRAM, snapchat and even facebook are full of photos and selfies of half-naked, ripped, muscle guys, now high summer is well and truly upon us.

The pressure on the rest of us mere mortals to achieve that perfect ‘Instabody’ is immense and something which can often make us go to extremes to get it.

Steroids are one of the obvious ways to get instant results, but for those of us who prefer a more natural approach, a high protein, low carb dietary regime is our weapon of choice.

So, are you one of those guys who carries a protein shake around you wherever you go during the day?

Well you may be suffering from ‘protorexia’, a term coined to describe an unhealthy fixation with protein-heavy foods and supplements, such as protein shakes and chicken.

When eaten as part of a balanced diet, protein allows our body to grow and repair itself. But is there a risk of becoming obsessed with protein to the extent that behaviour becomes symptomatic of an eating disorder?

The term has been linked to orthorexia - a condition defined as an “unhealthy obsession with healthy eating”, which has yet to be formally recognised as an eating disorder.

According to eating disorders charity Beat, much like ‘orthorexia’, protorexia is not a recognised eating disorder and we should be careful how we are using the term.

Speaking to The Huffington Post UK, a spokesperson from Beat said placing severe restrictions on diet “is obviously not healthy and may be an indication of an eating disorder”.

Studies suggest body-conscious individuals often begin consuming high levels of protein believing those with ripped torsos must be “healthy”, without realising the internal impact this may cause.

But how can you recognise if your gym buddy is using protein shakes to simply improve their workout or if they’re part of a more serious, underlying issue?

“Secretiveness around or preoccupation with food, becoming withdrawn, mood swings, low self-esteem, tiredness, and distorted perceptions of weight are some of the signs that someone might be developing some

form of eating disorder,” the spokesperson said.

A British Diabetic spokesperson also told the Huffpost, that, by focusing on consuming a lot of one nutrient, such as protein, you are likely to be restricting other food groups such as carbohydrates.

“This may lead to you missing out on other important parts of a diet, such as fibre,” she said.

“Fibre is found in fruit, vegetables and wholegrains and is really important for a healthy digestive system.”

She explained that protein may fill someone up so much that they are “unable to eat enough of the other things we need in our diet”.

“Animal protein, often, contains saturated fat, so if people are increasing their protein intake using animal protein it may be detrimental to heart health, by increasing their intake of saturated fat,” she said.

“There are risks of having an unbalanced diet including vitamin and mineral deficiencies and in the long term increasing the risk of developing chronic conditions.”

Most of us get enough protein by eating a well-balanced diet and varying the foods we eat every day, so there is no need to worry too much about getting enough.

Including two to three protein rich foods such as lentils, nuts, beans, meat or fish everyday is what the government recommends for good health.

Don’t shun the white bread Good news for lovers of white bread as a study suggests it may not be as bad for you as previously thought.

Living in Spain we are surrounded by white bread, in supermarkets, panaderias, cafes, restaurants and tapas bars and often we give it a miss believing it is unhealthy for us.

Processed white bread is often shunned by those looking to live a healthier lifestyle, but new research suggests that it may be just as healthy as brown bread.

Researches from the Weizmann Institute of Science analysed the levels of fat, cholesterol and key vitamins and minerals in participants eating different breads and found very little difference between the two.

Surprisingly, the investigators found the bread itself didn’t greatly affect the participants and that different people reacted differently to each bread type.

During the study, 20 healthy individuals were divided into two groups and advised to incorporate a specific bread into their diet.

Half the participants were given whole wheat sourdough bread to consume while the others were given the same portion of processed, packaged white bread. Wholewheat sourdough is a type of brown bread made through the natural fermentation of the yeast and bacteria found in flour. The study participants were instructed to consume a higher-than-usual amount of bread (around 25% of their calories, compared to the average bread consumption of 10%).

The participants ate their first bread type for a week,

before a two-week resting period where no bread was consumed. After this, the breads for the two groups were reversed.

Before the study and throughout the time it was ongoing, many health effects were monitored.

These included wakeup glucose levels; levels of the essential minerals calcium, iron, and magnesium; fat and cholesterol levels; kidney and liver enzymes; and several markers for inflammation and tissue damage.

The investigators also measured the makeup of the participants’ gut bacteria before, during, and after the study.

The initial finding - and this was very much contrary to our expectation - was that there were no clinically

significant differences between the effects of these two types of bread on any of the parameters that we measured,” said Eran Segal, a computational biologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science and one of the study’s senior authors.

“We looked at a number of markers, and there was no measurable difference in the effect that this type of dietary intervention had.”

Surprisingly, the researchers found that different people responded to different breads in contrasting ways.

About half the people had a better response to the processed, white flour bread, and the other half had a better response to the whole wheat sourdough. The lack of differences were only seen when all findings were averaged together.

“The findings for this study are not only fascinating but potentially very important, because they point toward a new paradigm: different people react differently, even to the same foods,” said Eran Elinav, a researcher in the Department of Immunology at the Weizmann Institute and another of the study’s senior authors.

“To date, the nutritional values assigned to food have been based on minimal science and one-size-fits-all diets have failed miserably.”

He added: “These findings could lead to a more rational approach for telling people which foods are a better fit for them, based on their microbiomes [a group of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.”

and do whatever we can to help, it’s also important not to let ourselves become consumed and overwhelmed by distressing news.

Cut down access to technology: The more time people spent watching the news or ‘living in the television world,’ the more likely they were to think of the world as an intimidating and unforgiving place, harbouring more fear and anxiety about the world around them.

Today, our phones and social media keep us connected to a live stream of tragedies as they unfold and it can be much harder to maintain healthy boundaries and take time out from emotionally overwhelming news when we need.

Constant connections to social media and news can keep people feeling like they are well informed and connected to the world at large and a part of a bigger community.

However, you only ever get a certain version of events as reported in any media, which leads to a false sense of knowledge or understanding We think about these negative events more, talk about them more and pay more attention to them, which is very physically and emotionally draining.

Keep a balance: Positive news can be found among tragedy, such as stories of how strangers have helped one another.

To combat the impact of reading sad news, Dr Thomas recommended “seeking out stories of people’s resilience and connectedness after reading distressing headlines, which can help soothe the threat system”.

She also pointed out the importance of staying connected to loved ones in real life and consciously limiting the time you spend reading news and social media, to foster more positive feelings.

It’s “vital that we keep a balanced perspective,” when tragedy hits the news.

“Yes lots of terrible and sad things happen, but the world is full of so many good things too - from major scientific breakthroughs to the incalculable number of small acts of kindness which happen each and every day,” he said “Coping effectively isn’t about naively pretending things are all fine when they’re not. But dwelling excessively on negative news isn’t healthy, especially for events that we have no control over.

“The best approach is to be a rational optimist - by accepting how things really are, but remembering to stay hopeful and to also notice the ways that things can - and do - get better.”

How can it damage your eyes?

Breakfast like a king Poached eggs with broccoli, tomatoes & wholemeal flatbread

Protein-packed eggs with antioxidant-rich broccoli make this a healthy and satisfying breakfast choice.

Ingredients: 100g thin-stemmed broccoli, trimmed and halved 200g cherry tomatoes on the vine 4 medium free-range eggs (fridge cold) 2 wholemeal flatbreads 2 tsp mixed seeds (such as sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and linseed) 1 tsp cold-pressed rapeseed oil good pinch of chilli flakes Method: Boil the kettle. Heat oven to 120C/100C fan/gas 1/2 and put an ovenproof plate inside to warm up.

Fill a wide-based saucepan one-third full of water from the kettle and bring to the boil. Add the broccoli and cook for 2 mins. Add the tomatoes, return to the boil and cook for 30 secs.

Lift out with tongs or a slotted spoon and place on the warm plate in the oven while you poach the eggs.

Return the water to a gentle simmer. Break the eggs into the pan, one at a time, and cook for 2 1/2 - 3 mins or until the whites are set and the yolks are runny.

Divide the flatbreads between the two plates and top with the broccoli and tomatoes. Use a slotted spoon to drain the eggs, then place on top.

Sprinkle with the seeds and drizzle with the oil. Season with a little black pepper and the chilli flakes, and serve immediately.

Breakfast can be a chore, particularly if you’re in a hurry, when a slice of toast as you run out of the door might be the nearest you get to food this side of lunchtime.

Whilst we all love a full English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh at the weekend and it’s not as unhealthy as you may think if it’s grilled instead of fried, what are the healthy, but tasty alternatives, to awaken your morning tastebuds?

Here are a trio of zingy breakfast treats, bringing a fusion of flavours from around the world to your humble table.

Mexican beans & avocado on toast This vibrant Mexican-style breakfast with fresh avocado and black beans will give you a healthy start to the day and please your vegan friends at the same time, as it’s basically beans on toast with a twist.

Ingredients: 270g cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 red or white onion, finely chopped ½ lime, juiced 4 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp chipotle paste or 1 tsp chilli flakes 2 x 400g cans black beans, drained small bunch coriander, chopped 4 slices bread 1 avocado, finely sliced

for 1 min, season well and add most of the coriander.

Toast the bread and drizzle with the remaining 1 tbsp oil.

Put a slice on each plate and pile some beans on top.

Arrange some slices of avocado on top, then sprinkle with the remaining tomato mixture and coriander leaves to serve.

Method: Mix the tomatoes, ¼ onion, lime juice and 1 tbsp oil and set aside. Fry the remaining onion in 2 tbsp oil until it starts to soften.

Add the garlic, fry for 1 min, then add the cumin and chipotle and stir until fragrant. Tip in the beans and a splash of water, stir and cook gently until heated through.

Stir in most of the tomato mixture and cook

Baked salmon & eggs Do something different with your eggs and smoked salmon by baking into a bread roll for an extra special brunch.

Ingredients: 6 crusty white rolls (poppy seed ones look lovely) 25g butter, melted 6 slices smoked salmon or gravadlax 6 medium eggs a few snipped chives Method: Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Slice off the top of each roll, then gently remove the bread inside until there is a hole large enough to accommodate a slice of salmon and an egg.

Arrange the rolls on a baking sheet, reserving the tops.

(If you like, whizz the middles into crumbs and keep in the freezer for another recipe.)

Brush the inside and edges of the rolls with a little melted butter, then arrange a slice of salmon inside each one. Crack an egg into each and season.

Bake for 10-15 mins or until the eggs are cooked to your liking.

Scatter with snipped chives. Toast the tops, brush with the remaining butter, then cut into soldiers and use to dip into eggs.

Mediterranean diet good for mental and physical health Inspired by the traditional dietary patterns of Spain, Southern France, Italy, Greece and parts of the Middle East, the Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower mortality rate and reduced chance of developing chronic illness.

Now, researchers state that is its also beneficial for mental and physical health too.

The diet is characterised by the consumption of fish, olive oil, nuts, pulses, vegetables and fruit.

To determine how much the Mediterranean diet impacts quality of life, researchers examined over 11,000 university students over a period of four years. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Navarra, is published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Patricia Henriquez Sanchez, researcher at the centre in the Canary Islands and lead author of the study, said: ‘The progressive aging of the population in developed countries makes it even more interesting to find out those factors that can increase quality of life and the health of the population.’

At the start of the study, the researchers asked participants to provide information on their dietary intake. To determine whether the diet was followed, consumption of fish, fruit, pulses, nuts, cereals, and vegetables was positively valued and consumption of meat, alcohol, and dairy products was negatively valued. The researchers measured self-perceived quality of life after the four-year monitoring period using a questionnaire.

The researchers found that participants who stuck to the diet more had better physical and mental well-being and significantly better physical quality of life.

Henriquez said, ‘the Mediterranean diet is an important

factor associated with better quality of life and can be considered as a healthy food model.’

According to the diet: • 1.5 - 2 litres of water should be drunk daily • Main meals should always contain three basic elements: vegetables, fruit, cereals, and dairy products • Moderate consumption of wine and other fermented beverages is recommended

• Olive oil constitutes the main source of fat for its nutritional quality • Fish, lean meat and eggs are sources of high quality animal protein. Fish and some seafood are also sources of healthy fats.

Although sweets, cakes, sugar, sweetened beverages and pastries are allowed, they should only be consumed occasionally and in small amounts.

Road Test - Range Rover Vogue SE TDV6

Few vehicles raise a smile in the way that a Range Rover does when you are behind the wheel, I find.

It’s always an absolute privilege to find yourself sitting in the high quality cabin and it is a fantastic experience. Imagine your favourite armchair and then add all the electronic gadgetry that you can conjure up and here is a seat that can be electrically adjusted to your heart’s content providing that ultimate driving position. Then of course there is the sheer height of this luxury off roader, which stands head and shoulders above most other vehicles apart from lorries. This means that the driver and front passenger have a marvellous view of the road ahead, which is perfect for overtaking. Despite its sheer size and weight this 4x4 is pretty quick off the mark and if the accelerator is pushed to the floor it makes safe light work of most opportunities that present themselves on the open road.

Zero to 60mph is accomplished in a little over seven seconds, which is very impressive. There are so many luxuries fitted to this vehicle that it makes a Rolls Royce blush. Shut the door and the Range Rover ensures that the door is properly closed as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The two section boot opens and closes at the push of a button. This is all well and good but ironically, after reading a newspaper article about how a woman lost her arm in the door of a neighbour’s car, I come close to trapping mine in the boot of the Range Rover but thankfully escape with a light bruise. It seems to shut and continues even if a hand is in the way. There needs to be a sensor to prevent this from happening.

I park the beast on my driveway which has a slight incline and on start up the suspension self-levels like Citroens of old; I love it. It’s actually easier to manoeuvre than some smaller vehicles too and even though there are blindspots these are easily overcome by the help of the reversing camera.

However, there are too many beeps for my liking when reversing alongside obstacles which can be off-putting, I cannot find a way of turning these sounds off.

I do like the cool box in the front centre armrest, which fits a good size beaker or bottle together with a few chocolate bars. The full length panoramic glass sunroof is a great addition because when the cover electronically slides back a vast amount of natural light fills the cabin. The sunroof electrically tilts and slides, too.

At night there are some neat touches too especially the light that drops from the bottom of the wing mirror to create a perfect circle, ideal when arriving at your destination in the pitch black.

I put it through its paces with a trip to West Bay in Dorset. It’s only about 80 miles or so away from home which should be covered in an hour and a half but with so much traffic on our roads it takes more than double this time. Not to worry though because any frustration is easily erased in the Range Rover. My two daughters have their headphones on and are watching CBeebies on their televisions which are built into the back of the front headrests. There is a remote control inside the centre rear armrest. In Hampshire the reception is perfect and it is only when we get to the valleys of Dorset where we lose the signal and the little cherubs start to complain. It is helpful that the front passengers can listen to the radio at the same time as the rear passengers watch the TV. However when stationary and I try watching the news, I find I cannot do this but have to watch Mr Maker on CBeebies if I want my daughters to remain quiet. Front and rear occupants must watch the same channel.

Like many an aristocrat, despite its fine credentials, it does feel just a little lethargic when sitting at a roundabout watching the world go by. When, finally, a gap in the traffic emerges and the accelerator is kicked to the floor there is a noticeable delay from the eight speed automatic transmission which is ever so slightly unnerving. But it quickly regains composure.

Inside there are lots of cleverly designed cubbyholes particularly the ones underneath the driver and front passenger’s armrest on the door. Even the rear seats can be electrically adjusted and there are buttons in the boot to electronically fold the rear seats and operate the tow bar, making life very easy indeed.

dial in the front centre console. Simply push it and it rises and then turn to the environment that you find yourself in. The Range Rover is a magnificent vehicle that copes just as well off road as it does on and is probably even happier blazing through a field than a flat motorway.

Externally the vehicle is a design classic that has subtly evolved since its introduction in 1970. With its clean lines and large grille together with a striking side profile it cuts a dashing appearance that demands attention with many gazing longingly and performing double takes.

Whether one is an extrovert or not this is a thoroughly impressive form of transport. Road test one today or regret it for evermore.

Decline in new car sales not a concern The UK new car market has declined for a third consecutive month with 243,454 new units registered in June, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations fell at a slower pace than in the previous two months, by -4.8%, as demand continued to stabilise following a record first quarter and the subsequent market turbulence caused by the recent changes to Vehicle Excise Duty. The market is now more in line with 2017 forecasts.

Demand in the month was down across private, fleet and business registrations, recording falls of -7.8%, -2.4% and -8.3% respectively. Meanwhile, the AFV sector enjoyed notable growth, with demand rising 29.0% to 10,721 units to maintain a record 4.4% market share for a second month. Petrol registrations rose by 2.5% and diesel fell -14.7%.

Compact cars, typically powered by smaller petrol engines, proved most

popular for all buyers, with superminis and small family cars accounting for almost 60% of the market. Small family cars and SUVs were the only two segments to register growth in June, up 6.0% and 11.3% respectively.

Year-to-date, overall performance remains strong, falling slightly by -1.3% to 1,401,811 units and putting the market on track to meet 2017 forecasts.

Fleet and business buyers drove demand across the first six months with registrations up 1.5% and 2.7% respectively in contrast to a -4.8% drop in private purchases, although almost 650,000 consumers have chosen a new car this year.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “As forecast, demand for new cars has started to cool following five consecutive years of solid growth but the numbers are still strong and the first half of the year is the second biggest on record. Provided consumer and business confidence holds, we expect demand to remain at a similarly high level over the coming months. It’s encouraging to see alternatively fuelled vehicles experiencing rapid growth but adoption is still at a relatively low level and more long term incentives are required if this new generation of vehicles is to be a more common sight on British roads.”

Venus tears: Seven times Grand Slam champion walks out on Wimbledon press conference.

TENTH seeded Venus Williams, broke down in tears after being asked questions about the Palm Beach car crash, she was recently involved in, which left 78 year old Jerome Barson dead and police believe she caused.

Williams, making her 20th appearance at Wimbledon, had just completed a reasonably straightforward first round victory over Elise Mertens 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.

The American – at 37 the oldest woman in the draw here – was at her imperious best in the opening stages, breaking Mertens in her opening service game and dictating points with her serve, before Mertens began varying her game, managing to claw her way back into the set.

A five-time singles champion at Wimbledon, Williams needed five set points before taking the first set against 21-year-old Mertens.

A rain delay on Court One then halted the progress of the American after Mertens saved two match points.

Mertens, playing her first Wimbledon, held and saved a further two match points before Williams produced an emphatic shot to secure victory.

In the news conference, Williams said: “Tennis is still the love of my life. It gives me joy.

“Life, you can’t prepare for everything. I prepared for a lot of matches, tried to get ready for whatever my opponent will throw at you, but you can’t prepare for everything.

“I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. That’s all I can say about it. That’s what I’ve learned.”

After fielding a few questions about the crash, Williams became visibly tearful, as she admitted, “There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating and – yeah. I’m completely speechless.

It’s just – yeah, I mean, I’m just …” her voice trailed off, before she rushed out of the

conference.

After taking a few minutes to regain her composure with members of her team, she returned to the room.

Witnesses to the accident told Palm Beach police that Williams ran a red light, which caused the car, driven by the deceased’s wife Linda, to run into her own SUV,injuring Barson, who died 13 days later.

Williams told investigators she entered the six-lane intersection on a green light but was forced to stop midway through because of traffic ahead of her, failing to see the Barsons’ car when she continued through at about 5mph.

But police concluded the driver of Williams’s car was “at fault for violating the right of way”.

Linda Barson, 68, also sustained injuries, including “a cracked sternum, shattered right arm, broken wrist, hand and fingers”.

As one of only two former Wimbledon champions in the women’s field, Williams has a promising draw and perhaps a renewed ambition, plus she is in the form of her life, making her a real contender, even at 37.

Time will only tell whether the added pressure of her private life will eventually take it’s toll.
