Banderas lifts curtain on dream city hopes Malaga: The city that Banderas adores

By Jimmy Grayling ANTONIO BANDERAS makes no secret of his love affair with Malaga, the Costa del Sol´s increasingly vibrant capital. And the leading man is anxious that while he may be a global star, moving forward he wants to be very much a part of Malaga and its exciting future plans. Banderas has announced that he will back the winning bid for redevelopment of the Astoria and Victoria buildings in Malaga´s historic centre, with the proposal including a cutting-edge cultural centre with spaces for art exhibitions, live music, theatre and fine-dining. There are also reports that the Hollywood star is set to invest in Malaga’s port,

which continues to undergo a stunning transformation. A strip of bars and restaurants and a marine museum already sit alongside Malaga’s Pompidou Centre which is topped by an eye-catching glass box, and Banderas may lend his name to a new theatre project on a disused dock. No longer viewed as more of a port town that a glitzy modern city, Malaga opened its doors last month to a grand new first class hotel following a €65 million refit of the 1920s Gran Hotel. Malaga continues to cement its burgeoning reputation as one of Spain’s most vibrant cultural hubs with the city council investing millions of euros revitalising numerous areas tin recent years.

The 56-year-old actor - who already has a deluxe home in Marbella - recently bought a new penthouse in Malaga city centre, and since arriving to collect an honorary award at the Malaga Film Festival in March has made a series of public appearances. Having participated in the city’s Semana Santa celebrations, an annual pilgrimage for the heart-throb, Banderas also visited the School of Performing Arts, where a theatre bears his name. He also attended a number of events with his 37-year-old partner Nicol Kimpel. Even so, after suffering a heart attack in January, Banderas has quit smoking and publicly said he intends to work at a slower pace.

The face of RTN... Welcome to the new edition of the RTN Costa Del Sol. This brand has been one of the leading newspapers in the Costa Blanca area for the past 18 years. After spending quite some time on the Costa Blanca with my partner in crime Nicki Burgess building on the already successful Euro Weekly News, the RTN was always there running a close second and when the owners decided it was time to move on we were delighted to conclude the purchase of the title some three months ago. Now it’s time for the RTN to SHINE on the Costa Del Sol! The RTN is a more community-based newspaper with local news in its original form distributed from Benalmadena to Sotogrande by the EWN Media Group. This makes 13 titles for the EWN Media Group with another one on the way imminently, making the EWN Media group the largest English-language newspaper publisher in Spain. €750 for mobile chat at wheel by Staff Reporter DRIVERS face fines of up to €750 for using a mobile phone while at the wheel from tomorrow (Saturday). The fines are to be introduced following a controversial change to law that will allow all EU authorities to even trace overseas drivers for fines. The new laws outlined cover eight offences including speeding, failing to stop at a red light, failing to wear a seatbelt and using a phone while driving. Until now, foreign motorists could be fined in Spain only if they were stopped by police at the roadside or were in a hire car (where the company holds drivers´ personal details). Under the new laws, from tomorrow Spain and all other EU nations will be able to obtain drivers´ details. The Department for Transport in the UK has said it will seek to revoke the rules following Brexit in two years.

Horror crash

THREE Germans have been killed after their small aircraft crashed in the Sierra Tejeda above Alcaucin, killing all those on board. The three were in the penultimate stage of an air rally when they lost contact with air traffic control over Nerja. Agents initially checked whether the plane had landed in Granada, as expected, but despatched rescue workers when they found it had not. Workers eventually found the wreckage in the Los Pradillos area, at around 1600 metres above sea level, using Guardia Civil helicopters normally used to extinguish forest fires. The victims have not yet been named and investigators are now working to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Life’s a beach

RESIDENTS of Torremolinos have been angered by works to expand Hotel Don Pedro, which have cut off access to the pavement, forcing visitors to walk the long way round. Locals are now demanding the council take action to reinstate the path, which is used to access the popular Playa el Bajondillo. They say the works are causing pedestrians to cross between parked cars, and present a safety hazard.

Brit tries to bribe police A BRITISH man who was arrested in Mijas for money laundering allegedly tried to bribe the arresting Guardia Civil officers. The police had stopped a car carrying a Spaniard and two Britons due to their suspicious behaviour. On searching the vehicle, they found €345,000 in cash in the trunk. When questioned about the amount, the man said he was intending to buy a house locally but could not offer "in any way the legal provenance of that large a sum of money”, according to police. When the officers started to arrest the man for money laundering, he “repeatedly” tried to bribe them with the cash, they say. The money has now been handed over to the Judicial Authority.

RTN expands to the Costa del Sol Third edition launched today after EWNMG takeover. THE RTN newspaper welcomes you to its first-ever edition specifically produced for the Costa del Sol. After firmly establishing itself over the last 18 years as a popular free weekly newspaper with two editions throughout the Costa Blanca, the Costa del Sol now also becomes part of our circulation, readership and advertising area. Just three short months ago the RTN brand, with a reputation throughout the Costa Blanca for community news, was taken over by Euro Weekly Media Group (EWNMG). Since then the RTN staff – under the leadership and direction of the bigger EWNMG with headquarters in Benalmadena and offices throughout southern Spain – has been laying the foundations to publish its own Costa del Sol edition. So today is an historic day for the RTN - with colleagues now also based on the Costa del Sol – as it looks forward to providing the same high quality local and regional news coverage, feature articles and more that it has built a reputation for on the Costa Blanca over so many years. With the added strength being provided by EWNMG management plus its larger and more experienced support infrastructure, RTN is already benefitting from increased circulation, better distribution points and more local representatives. It’s no boast to say that advertising clients are already being offered a fuller, more rounded service, and now Costa del Sol based newspaper readers can look forward to experiencing exactly what RTN has only been able to offer Costa Blanca-based families previously. Michel and Steven Euesden, who head EWNMG and who have been involved at the highest level of newspaper publishing in southern Spain for almost 25 years, said “The launch of the RTN Costa del Sol issue further cements our ongoing expansion plans. Despite challenges throughout the global media industry, these are extremely exciting times for us all within EWNMG.” Meanwhile with the launch the RTN team looks forward to receiving feedback as well as hearing from anyone with local news, information on clubs, societies and general items of interest, including unusual local photographs.

As a company we are delighted that the Round Town News has arrived on the Costa del Sol and as such have booked a full page every week. The main reason being that we have advertised since offering our products across Spain in the RTN on the Costa Blanca, to where it’s been a leading ex pat newspaper title for many years. A leader in both local news, local guide as well as professional in the commercial side of the title creating a desired read for the news reader and a good advertising tool for local and national businesses to get the message across to the reader of their products and services available. It’s clear to us that those same set standards are now to spread to the Costa Del Sol and something we wish to be apart of and extend into our marketing portfolio and reach out to a further target global audience as our products and collections now cover not only here in Spain but as well as the UK the US, Portugal, France with more target Countries pending. Whilst myself arranging much of the marketing across these fore mentioned countries I come across many types of media & press institutions and Nationalities, to where I personally must say I find the management and staff at the RTN and it’s sister titles to be very friendly, helpful as well as totally professional and prompt, taking the stress out of the day when arranging the Spanish marketing side of the business. We as a Company wish the RTN every success in it’s new home on the Costa del Sol and that the new readers find it as interesting as those who have enjoyed it on the Costa Blanca over the past few years. And we are pleased of course that you have another medium to find out about our latest offers and new products as well as our 100% solid oak established ranges of furniture and hardwood framed quality Sofa’s! We look forward to seeing Reporting The News readers in-store soon or online at www.oaklandfurniturespain.com All the best RTN although we already know you will deliver!

Michel and Steven Euesden

Reaching the world

Malaga airport is flying high. by John Smith MALAGA Airport is becoming more globally friendly to travellers. With the choice of direct flights already in place to New York, now local international travellers are set to benefit from further new routings connecting the Costa del Sol´s own airport to key global flight hubs. From the end of this month travellers will be able fly directly to Tel Aviv from Mlaga in five hours with Israeli national carrier El Al introducing a new flight. While initially scheduled until the end of October, and expected to be used predominantly by Israeli tourists who flock to the Costa del Sol, the flights will additionally provide business travellers with an important new option, as well as national and locally based tourists seeking new holiday options.

In addition Qatar Airways’ is planning a new direct route between Malaga and Doha, the Qatari capital, starting in 12 months’ time. The carrier already services Madrid and Barcelona, but local travellers wishing to use the airline will in future be able to cut out lengthy connections. The Qatar flight plan will also be welcome to football fans hoping to attend the 2022 World Cup, set to take place in the Gulf state. With Qatar Airways huge global network, this will also give Costa del Sol travellers easier flight connections to the Far East including China, the Far East, as well as to Australia and South Africa. Malaga airport opened in 1919 and in the last 13 years has expanded immensely servicing more than 14 million passengers a year to around 60 different countries.

Drug baron nabbed A 51-YEAR-OLD Latvian man has been arrested in Torremolinos for drug trafficking. The man was subject to a European Arrest Warrant, put together by police in France, due to his alleged involvement in transporting drugs between Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and France, where he lived until September 2011. The accuses, who is originally from Latvia’s capital, Riga, was nabbed by police in Torremolinos after it was learnt he was running a restaurant near Calle Dean Juan Espino.

Two arrested for falsifying passport A 58-YEAR-OLD man and a 19-year-old have been arrested in Marbella for allegedly falsifying a passport in order to gain a residency permit. The National Police arrested the men, both originally from Senegal, after they tried to use a manipulated passport to claim to be father and son. The pair had turned up at Marbella’s National Police Station to falsely apply for family residency when officers became suspicious. Agents checked out the older man, who received citizenship in Spain two years ago, and believe he is using his children’s passports to help other Senegalese youths gain residency. Police are still investigating and the two men have been handed over to the Judicial Authority.

Smuggled cigarettes worth €50,000 seized by National Police by John Smith OFFICERS from the National Police stopped four cars in La Linea de la Concepcion and discovered 26,600 packs of smuggled cigarettes. The officers were convinced that there was something underhanded going on when they saw the four vehicles leaving La Linea and heading towards San Roque in what appeared to be a convoy and all of the drivers were using mobile phones. When all four cars were stopped and searched, the cigarettes which had no customs seals and are valued at €50,000 were discovered. All four who were arrested were Moroccans living in Spain and are believed to be part of a group involved in tobacco smuggling.

Storm damage BEACHES in Marbella have suffered extensive damage following recent storms on the Costa del Sol. In addition to sand loss, the beaches have suffered damage to pipes, showers, footbridges and seawalls. With only a few weeks to go until the tourist season, the town’s council has swung into action. Experts have been on the coastline assessing the extent of the damage and have already reinstated key services such as showers. While all Marbella’s beaches were affected, La Fontanilla and La Chapa were hit hardest, with storms even bringing water into coastal restaurants and bars.

Officers save five hikers FIVE hikers have been rescued by the Guardia Civil in two separate incidents in the Serrania de Ronda. The first incident involved a family of four who became lost for several hours while climbing in the area of Pujerra, Cartajim and Juzcar. Officers made contact with the family, who had two children with them, asking them to send a GPS location using a mobile phone app. Police were immediately dispatched to the area, finding the four within an hour. Both the adults and children were said to be well, although tired, and police gave them a lift back to their accommodation in Pujerra. Another hiker, a 67-year-old man, was also rescued in Sierra de Montalate, after injuring his leg. The man’s walking companions phoned the authorities after the man caught his leg in a crevice, injuring his ankle and sustaining cuts and bruises. Officers located the group within minutes and transferred the hiker to a medical centre in Benaojan, where he was later evacuated to Ronda Hospital.

Costa is swamped by Sally Underwood The Costa del Sol looks to have sufficient water to meet normal demands this summer. While some reservoir levels are still causing concern, La Concepción reservoir that supplies Torremolinos to Manilva is 97 percent full, almost a third more than last year. The reservoirs supplying Malaga Province are only just over half full, and despite last weekend’s heavy storms, water authorities say further boosts are needed to ensure

steady supplies throughout the summer. Conde Guadalhorce levels are at 64 percent, a marked improvement from the 40 percent levels earlier in the year. Demand for water varies throughout the year and there is obviously a higher demand during peak tourist season. The last official drought, from 2005 to 2008, when heavier water restrictions were imposed, was declared when reservoir levels reached 35%. At the current levels, it is too soon to tell if the recent rain has provided hope for a drought-free summer.

MARBELLA’S Council has held an event among primary school children to teach the importance of recycling. The event is in its third year and sees 1500 pupils from 22 schools get involved in a scheme called, “Your City Cleaner”, which makes recycling fun buy rewarding participating children with gifts. The youngsters will also be taught about the importance of cleaning up after pets and ensuring adults put their cigarette butts in bins. Francisco Garcia, the Council’s spokesman for municipal cleaning explained the annual campaign was a success, saying, “through educating these children, we have also managed to reach their parents too.”

End of play

TORREMOLINOS Council have taken down children’s play areas on the town’s beaches following recent storm damage. A spokesman for the council said they could not guarantee the safety of children using the facilities in their current condition and have decided to remove the swings and play areas rather than replace them. The move came as a surprise to parents who turned up on the coast to play with their children, and means there are now no free children’s activities on the town’s beaches.

15 minutes with Lorraine at a Positively Pink ball

Hotelier and charity-fund raiser extra-ordinaire Lorraine Palmer gives an insight to the the Positively Pink and Positively Blue charities while family members spotlight life running the stunningly-located El Oceano Hotel at La Cala de Mijas. John Smith reports.

A true charity queen FOR Lorraine Palmer, raising money is part of her DNA. So much so that over the last 11 years two cancer charities she founded have raised hundreds of thousands of euros. Lorraine founded the Positively Pink charity locally after having a cancer scare herself. She did not know how to best cope with the need to undergo tests in Spain but after returning to the UK to see a specialist, she was horrified by how long it took to get the test results. Realising she would not be the only expatriate to face such a challenge - or delay - the Positively Pink Charity was founded based on the concept that British women on the Costa del Sol would be provided with help to have free breast cancer tests here, with guaranteed speedy results plus ongoing support should the initial tests not be good. Thousands of women since 2006 have taken advantage of the charity, with a Positively Blue charity service since additionally set up offering men free screening for prostate cancer.

While Lorraine sees herself as a busy but typical working mother looking after guest relations and keeping a close eye on overall service at the familyrun El Oceano Hotel, she admits often devoting more time to her Positively Pink and Blue cancer charities. Q – What made you set up Positively Pink? A - When my husband John and I returned to Spain we were delighted I was not suffering any form of cancer, but I knew I had to do something to help others. So 11 years ago when John asked what I wanted for our wedding anniversary I said a Pink Ball. My idea was that I would purchase equipment for a hospital with proceeds but I then realised machines break down while tests constantly need to be undertaken. Q – How is the charity funded? A – All of our money comes from generous donations from supporters and various events and as the charities employ no staff, every cent earned goes towards paying for the screenings.

The right spot

EL OCEANO Hotel situated on the seafront in La Cala De Mijas has become a popular destination for British travellers. In the 14 years that the Palmer family has owned and run what used to be an almost empty hotel with a small restaurant, it has been transformed into a popular haven which boasts that more than 50 per cent of its guests have returned on more than one occasion. Although much overused, the term ‘boutique hotel’ describes the 55 room El Oceano perfectly as it offers upscale accommodation, top quality service and is small enough for all of the staff to be able to recognise and interact with all of the guests. There is a restaurant with panoramic views of the Mediterranean that can accommodate 200 covers and the hotel is so popular with wedding parties that the owners have decreed that they will only accept one wedding a week in order to ensure that holiday guests are not disturbed. There are four family members (mother, father, daughter and son-in-law) totally involved in running the hotel and each has a specific role although they regularly discuss changes as they all live on the premises. Each year the hotel closes from January until Easter so that annual refurbishments can take place and the re-opening this year saw a complete facelift for every single room and suite. The hotel has a number of bright public rooms, bars inside and out, two swimming pools, access to the beach and a first class restaurant for which they employ three head chefs to ensure that every service is presented immaculately. The Palmer’s book some of the best local entertainment with live musicians playing every night except Sunday when two different acts perform for the almost always sold out Sunday lunch. Some suites have external hot tubs overlooking the Mediterranean and the Elemis Spa and Hairdressers in a separate building attract guests as well as external visitors. The Spa building also contains a small number of self-contained apartments for guests who like to make their breakfast and snacks. El Oceano attracts and keeps guests due to the exceptional surrounding coupled with attention to detail and excellent service.

Q – Does the Pink Ball still continue? A – It has become an annual event at the hotel with tickets normally sold out a year in advance. As well as a fantastic meal and top musical entertainment an auction by a celebrity guest flown in from the UK is held. Last October´s Pink Ball boosted funds by more than € 26,000. Individual tickets cost €100 per person and the hotel charges food and beverages at cost so that the maximum benefit goes to the charities. This is further boosted by raffle tickets for incredible and kindly donated prizes. Q – And what about the special Diamond Ring competition? A – Our wedding anniversary falls in October and each year now, John gives me a beautiful diamond ring. But I never seem to keep hold of it and every year we offer sealed ring boxes for a fee to ball guests with one box containing my ring. Q – What was your most recent big fund raiser? A – A super lady, Diane, in 2008 suffered from ovarian cancer which was cured, but in 2014 after regular Positively Pink screenings she discovered she had breast cancer. Thankfully she survived and as a gesture of thanks to us, her husband Steve arranged for a sponsored walk with 200 taking part. We are still counting proceeds but they are close to an unbelievable €14,000. Q – How much does a screening normally cost? A – We recently contacted Helicopteros Sanitarios after they had opened a new facility in Puerto Banus, thanks to advice from EWNMG owner Michel Euesden. As a result a special discount from their normal €180 fee has been agreed so that we can now offer this service to women in the Marbella area as well as our existing service in Fuengirola. Last year we helped more than 3,000 women and a smaller number of men but ran out of funds as demand outstripped our income. Q- Is there anything further you wish to add? A – Cancer can hit anyone at any time; a partner, daughter or grandchild. So if you can help in any way raising funds, promoting the charity or making a donation please visit http://positively-pink.com/.

Then and now from Manchester to the Costa del Sol by John Smith IT was almost 21 years ago when the IRA detonated an enormous explosion in Manchester causing considerable damage but happily no loss of lives. One couple who were caught up in this terrible event were Duquesa residents Lisa and Perry Hughes who were shopping at the time. The couple had gone in slightly different directions when the explosion occurred and Perry was with his 11-year-old daughter Heidi whilst Lisa was pushing their seven-month-old son Sam in his pushchair when the window of the Habitat store imploded. Whilst Perry was tending to his daughter who was covered in blood, Lisa instinctively grabbed Sam from the pushchair and thought that she was passing him to her husband, but instead she gave him to a security guard who shot off down the street with her son. A terrified motherIn hindsight, it was an act of kindness by the ‘shell shocked’ guard who was scared that there might be another explosion and thought that he was rushing Sam to safety but for Lisa it was yet another nightmare and she ran screaming after the pair desperate to hold her son again. The photograph of the stunned security guard holding Sam and the distraught Lisa made headlines around the world although the family was soon re-united though each suffered long-term effects from that traumatic day. Physical scars heal. The cuts from the flying glass healed leaving some scars but the mental scars lasted a lot longer and having had a second child two years later, it was another seven years before the couple could go out and leave their children with a baby sitter. Lisa had to give up a very successful career and the couple found solace in regular visits to the Costa del Sol which was quieter and much more laid back than living in the UK and eventually, two years ago, they moved full time to their property in Duquesa bringing son Sam now 21 with them.

The move to SpainSam is a very intelligent young man who has studied philosophy and Japanese at University but he is uncomfortable in crowded places and has easily settled into the life in Spain, taking a gap year so that he could set up his own internet business with the help of his parents. Like a number of young people he is fascinated by on-line games as well as sports generally and he has come up with an idea that the family believe could become the new social platform for sports fans. With a significant financial outlay and a company now registered in Gibraltar, he has created a free App, GameDay Xtra which is available on PC and in all App stores which is undergoing Beta testing at the moment. The family has sold their property in the UK and invested all of their money in this new concept which has now been reviewed positively by both the BBC and Daily Telegraph with other media including radio and TV interviewing the family.GameDay Xtra Starting initially with Football, Basketball and Cricket, the App has breaking sporting editorial and video news stories coming in throughout the day but one of the key features especially for ex-pats is that you can also follow all major Premiership football, Champions League and European competitions as well as lower league games and local matches live in their Play By Play section. The intention is to expand this option to include a whole range of different sports and to allow supporters of different clubs from major and minor leagues all over the world to interact with each other and the aim is for this to be recognised as the Facebook plus of sports fans.Puerto SiliconAlthough he has more than one string to his bow, his family and an international investor believe

that GameDay Xtra has the potential to take the cyber world by storm and perhaps in the not too distant future, the name Sam Hughes will rank alongside the founders of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Google as Puerto Duquesa becomes Puerto Silicon.

A TOTAL of 70 companies have submitted tenders for works to the La Lobilla urbanisation in Estepona, which has a budget of €738,599.85. The successful company will be tasked with creating two new roads, as well as a green space of around 9,185 square metres. They will also install pavements, signage and waste facilities, as well as street lighting and furniture. Construction has been pending completion since 2008, and is financed by bank guarantees from the first developers who worked on the site. Estepona’s Councillor for Development, Infrastructure and Tourism, Ana Valesco, explained, "after a drawn-out administrative procedure, the town has finally managed to use the guarantees given by the initial developers to carry out the works necessary to complete these facilities.”

Press pack AROUND 30 members of the Costa del Sol Press Club (CPC) have taken a tour of Torremolinos to see firsthand the regeneration projects being carried out throughout the town. The event, entitled "Torremolinos in focus, the rebirth of an icon", saw journalists divided into two groups and given a guided tour by tour members of the town’s tourist office. The Costa Press Club, a non-profit organisation, celebrates its 15th anniversary on June 8 and has more than 50 members from nine different nationalities, and organises activities for foreign journalists in Spain.

Missing girls to get married by Sally Underwood MARIA JIMENA Rico, a 28-year-old woman from Torrox who went missing in Turkey proposed to her 22-year-old girlfriend, Shaza Ismail, after the two were dramatically rescued by the Spanish authorities. The girls, who is said to be “in shock”, has returned with her partner from Istanbul, where they had been held for several days The couple had initially been reported missing a week ago after travelling to Dubai to visit 22-year-old Miss Ismail’s mother, who was supposedly sick. It turns out the invitation was a ruse though and that Miss Ismail’s family, who are originally from Egypt, wanted her to go to jail for her sexual orientation. The two women fled to Georgia where they were confronted by Ms Ismail’s father, who tore up their passports and visas. They managed to escape, however, travelling to Turkey. One there, the two were held by the authorities without access to phones or consular assistance due to their lack of documents. The Spanish girl’s frantic family alerted the authorities here, after receiving a last voice mail saying her girlfriend’s family were “going to try to kill us.” Spanish diplomats worked to secure their quick release and the pair have now been allowed to leave the middle eastern country and return to Spain. Ms Jimena Rico now says she wants to wed her partner as soon as possible so she can stay in Spain.

Coming clean EL PUERTO Sports Society has brought together a group of volunteers to clean Fuengirola’s port. The day, which was supported by the town’s council, saw locals giving the port a good scrub with the aim of “promoting it and trying to make society aware that we cannot continue to dirty it”, according to a representative from El Puerto Sports Society, Rafael Lebron. He added that waste in the port, “gets onto our beaches and ruins marine life”, before thanking the council for its support of the scheme.

Costa Women a free group that helps to make friends by John Smith ONE of the most difficult things for some newly arrived expatriates in Spain is a feeling of alienation and loneliness. In many cases they don’t speak the language and have no close friends to turn to so they have difficulty in adapting. When Ali Meehan who describes herself as a ‘digital nomad’ first arrived in Fuengirola with her partner (who is now her husband) in 2002 she has had travelled a great deal but still found it a little daunting to cope with. The couple left from Spain and undertook in the Middle East and Thailand but when they returned in 2010, Ali decided to found Costa Women, the largest community for women living in or moving to Spain. Birth of Costa Women Her concept was that there was a real need for those new arrivals to be able to make friends, ask for advice and share problems and ideas. Just like other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter she wanted to make this a free online members club which English speaking women could join and enjoy. Although this is far from being a ‘vanity project’ it has become a major part of Ali’s life and she has funded it since its inception six years ago from the work she undertakes running a social media marketing consultancy on a global basis. At last however she has attracted three major sponsors Caser Seguros, My Lawyer in Spain and International FX who now assist in ongoing running costs.

Costa Women now boasts 5,600 members based mainly on the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca but there are regular contributions from members in Almeria, Barcelona, Ibiza and Tenerife and because it offers free membership, more and more women are discovering it. Aspects of help Ali and a small group of volunteers organise regular networking meetings so that members can put names to faces and make new friends whilst costs to attend are minimal, generally just café or restaurant prices. When asked what she considered the most important aspect of Costa Women, Ali responded “Being able to connect, inspire, enable and support women from 60 different nationalities during their move to and around Spain. “Whilst we don’t know the outcome of Brexit, for our British members, this is a time of great uncertainty. To have a community where you can come and ask questions, get support, share experiences, and find likeminded souls to me is what Costa Women is all about.” To summarise, everybody has a different way of using the community so it has a different value depending on what you want from the community. It could be just as an online resource, or it could be as a place to make new friends, business connections, or attend events on and offline, or post requests for work, create your own events, write and share blogs and even sell, swop or give away unwanted possessions. If you would like to learn more or apply to join please visit www.costawomen.com.

‘The Big One 2017’ Largest collection of classic Jaguars ever in Spain. by Tahnee Wright After 18 months of planning, ‘The Big One 2017’ took place across Saturday April 22 and Sunday April 23 in Parador de Leon, Northern Spain. A joint event between The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain, The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, South of France, plus some very enthusiastic members from the JEC in the UK, the result was 97 classic Jaguars, (100 prior to three breakdowns) cleaned and polished to ‘within an inch of their lives’ with 201 very enthusiastic owners congregating at the Parador de Leon Hotel. The main event took place across the Saturday and Sunday, however many of the participants took two to three days or more to travel to and from their homes to the event. Cars and owners came from all over Spain, France and the UK and on the way up, many members from The Costa Blanca region stopped off at Segovia - World Heritage City, for a spot of sightseeing. Members from the UK came from as far as Plymouth, Lancashire and North Wales – those opting for the scenic routes covering approximately 3,500 miles over many days. Having received prior special permission from Leon Town Hall, the outstanding collection of cars parked on St. Marco’s Square in front of the hotel and as expected, attracted much attention. On the Saturday evening, members gathered for predinner drinks in The Cloisters to the sounds of classic guitar before proceeding to one of the medieval halls and enjoying a masked ball with three-course dinner and wine. As the Grand Draw was announced, winners took home cash prizes, starting at €500 for the first prize. A prize was also awarded for the best mask, won by Andrew Honour in his classic venetian mask.

Each table was issued with an envelope for a charity donation, raising in total €2,214 which will be donated to Cancer Research UK. After the final announcements, members enjoyed much music and dancing into the early hours. After a leisurely start on Sunday, members were delighted to meet with the Mayor of Leon at 11.00am before starting their engines at 11.30am and snaking through the city, out into the Spanish countryside and pulling up in Villafranca where a 21-course cocktail lunch was savoured. The JEC in Spain is organised by Eric Arnold and Ian McMenemy. Ocean Clinic surgeons ‘give back’ in Kenya Operating on Africa’s poorest. by Tahnee Wright Ocean Clinic Marbella recently collaborated with two local charitable organisations to carry out life-changing surgery on 25 children and adults in Kenya in April. The clinic sent a team of six medical staff, led by Head Surgeon Dr. Kai Kaye, as part of its on-going mission to ‘give back’. Dr. Kaye said - ‘it is necessary to give back and I have the skills and means to do so. At some point in life you have to put things in perspective and ask yourself if you can plant your own little grassroots to help, even on a small scale.’ ‘I can change lives in Kenya and have much more impact than I can here in Spain, where nobody lacks basic medical services or care. I call it part of our social responsibility.’ The five-day Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Camp, follows a similar mission organised in Lamu, Kenya last year and a trip to Peru in 2013. This year, the team assessed 70 patients with medical conditions ranging from congenital malformations, tumours, burns and scars. They successfully treated a total of 45 patients, with 25 surgeries carried out. Dr. Kaye added - ‘one of the highlights of this year’s camp was giving back extended leg mobility to a young girl called Maryam, who had a contracted knee after a burn. Now she will get physiotherapy and may have a chance of learning to walk again.’ The camp was made possible thanks to support from several partners and supporters, including two local Spanish organisations working in Lamu; Anidan, which runs a shelter for orphans and abandoned children, and Foundation Pablo

Horstman, which operates a hospital and two preschools. Dr. Kaye extended his greatest thanks to all those who donated to the mission, including Ms. Gisela Steinhoff and her husband for their generous donation of €1,000. Ocean Clinic intends to run the camp again next Easter. People can support the 2018 campaign through financial donations, providing medical equipment and/ or personal involvement. The Association of AVOI needs your help! The Association of AVOI is an association of voluntary workers from Malaga who, since 1993, have been helping children in the Malaga Hospital. The association is made up of approximately 150 volunteers who, day-in day-out, amuse and entertain the children and their families with games, workshops and activities. The association also arrange excursions for the children to enjoy time with others who are going through similar treatment. AVOI’s aim is simple: • To make the children’s stay in hospital more enjoyable, through games, workshops and activities. • To transform the vision of a hospital where education, culture and social coexistence converge. • To ensure that children are not afraid of the hospital environment. • To promote workshops for parents. • To organise excursions. • To train volunteers to make their work as effective as possible for the children. • To collaborate closely with the hospital to provide an excellent quality of service. AVOI are currently working on a big project as they propose to build a new Bone Marrow Transplant Chamber for the Malaga Hospital Children’s Oncology Ward. They plan to completely refurbish the isolation chambers, creating a new, child-friendly environment in which all the children can feel at home or, at least, comfortable throughout their stay (which, for a transplant patient, usually averages at around 21 days). AVOI We have already started organising various events to raise funds for the project - on June 3, 30 parties will be celebrated across 30 different towns in Malaga with the theme ‘’VERBENAVOI SONRISAS POR BANDERA’. Quiz trophy comes home to Coin On Wednesday April 26, a team of six dedicated quizzers from the Coin branch of the Royal British Legion travelled to Loja to try and regain the coveted Michael Taylor Trophy. Michael and his wife Jo, now Chairman of the Coin branch, bought the trophy many years ago and offered it as a prize for the Spain South Annual Quiz. Loja managed to win the trophy from Coin three years ago and every year Coin has tried to win it back but failed narrowly each time – except this year. Against strong opposition from Loja, Torre del Mar, Molina and Mijas Costa, the Coin A team claimed an outstanding victory seven points clear of the field. Congratulations go to team captain Russel together with Heather, Frances, Bob, Rayah and Perry. Coin also fielded a B team to run interference for the A team and they came a creditable second just three points behind the winners of the B group. The challenge is on; can Coin retain the trophy in 2018?

Blooming marvellous Costa del Sol residents plus many tourist visitors are flocking to Cordoba´s annual patio festival which runs until May 14. by Sally Underwood More than 200 homes have opened their patios and courtyards in a contest that sees awards given including for the most colourful display. The patio festival has been running in Cordoba for almost 100 years with homes frequently collectively built around a central courtyard with a fountain or well positioned to collect rainwater. This Roman design, which reduces exposure to high summer temperatures, was later adapted by Moorish conquerors who added features including a direct street entrance, along with flowers in beds or pots. During the patio festival it is also possible for visitors - many from overseas - to marvel at not only huge and colourful blooming flower displays, but also stone mosaics, water features, antique furniture and ceramic. Flamenco dancers add further atmosphere throughout the city, as tapas and drinks are consumed. Entrance to the home patios is generally free, although owners often place a collection box for donations. Visiting hours are from 11 am - 2 pm and 6 pm - 10 pm. Follow their slime trails British media is full of let’s incinerate the Russian Federation and teach Putin a lesson bombast. He did something wrong? Seriously, just what illegal substances are government officials and tabloid editors on? Like the other 220 nations Russia doesn’t threaten the UK or its interests. However, this much provoked state has the means and the will to turn the UK into a glass-strewn parking lot if it feels threatened. Russian parliamentarian Frants Klintsevich doesn’t mince his words. “Britain’s threat deserves a tough answer.” The First Deputy of the Russian Defence Committee adds: “Russian cannot conquer Europe or the US through invasion or occupation. It is absolutely evident and thus pointless (to do so). It is high time to remind (London) of the vulnerability of its territory, which could be literally wiped off the face of the earth.” Russia is perfectly entitled to react to British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon threatens to use nuclear weapons pre-emptively. This privately educated idiot never held a proper job, ran a business and never wore anything but a school uniform. Yet, without feeling it necessary to give reason or consult the people, he absurdly threatens the annihilation of the world’s second most powerful nuclear-armed superpower. Britain’s infamous ‘if it bleeds it leads’ red top tabloids took up the cry. The Daily Mail, ‘So how do you like it, Vlad?’ This newspaper had earlier confused Latvia on the Baltic Sea with landlocked Mordovia 1,500km distant. war rhetoric is to drive up arms sales. Sardonically, he alludes to taxpaying Britons paying for war with their incinerated ashes or their tax obligations. Until they are elected British MPs are a run o’ the mill lot who aren’t particularly wealthy. However, after their being elected, 78% of MPs are millionaires. Why? Because MPs and the Lords pass legislation that favour corporate interests. Then, having made trading conditions favourable they invest in corporations including

the taxpayer subsidised armaments industries. Senators who voted to attack Syria received 83 per cent more campaign money from military contractors than lawmakers voting no. The West’s legislators and corporate media should have their investments carefully scrutinised. I would put money on it that their slime trail leads straight to their stockbroker’s office. The fact is, every time we vote for politicians we vote for war.

May 1st –A Wellington Day by

Colin Bird

An anniversary that went virtually unnoticed his week was May 1st 1769, the birth of Arthur Wellesley Duke of Wellington. Born in Dublin to aristocratic British parents, his first love as a boy was music. But his widowed mother anxious for her son not to be labelled a wuss, insisted he join the army where he was commissioned as a major, serving as the aide-de-camp to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. A bloke about as popular with the Irish as St George at a dragon convention. At age 26 he became Lieutenant Colonel in the 33rd Infantry Regiment of Foot, a rank he purchased with a loan from his brother, and was first bloodied in the disastrous Flanders campaign. In spite of this failed attempt to put paid to the First French Republic, Wellesley acquired a taste for war and obviously thought to himself: “I’ll have some more of that”. After returning home he soon left again for India where he covered himself in glory, not to mention curry sauce, and was awarded a knighthood for his efforts along with a promotion to the rank of Major General. In fact he was the very model of a modern major general. A year after returning to England, he became the M.P. for Rye, and shortly after was appointed Chief Secretary of Ireland. But he continued with his military career despite his parliamentary duties and took part in campaigns in the Peninsular War where he was made army commander and promoted to Field Marshall. But Waterloo is the one name above all others that is synonymous with Wellesley, who had by this time been granted a Dukedom. The Prussians under the command of General Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher - a name that if mispronounced sounds like someone trying to cough up a fish bone – played a decisive role in the battle, and along with other coalition forces under the command of Wellington, they finally defeated Napoleon’s army on the evening of Sunday 18th June 1815.If anything, Wellington is perhaps under appreciated. Apart from Waterloo and his status as Commander-in-Chief of the British army – a position he held up until his death – he also became Prime Minister twice and later a leading figure in the House of Lords. He is still regarded as one of the finest military tacticians of all time and is truly one of the greats of British history. Happy birthday Arthur.

Trust is what makes a success of digital workplaces Trusting employees by giving them autonomy is the key to making a success of the digital workplace, according to research conducted by Nick van der Meulen of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) and MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research (CISR). In an era where digital workplaces are quickly becoming the norm, the study found that organisations that invest most into these digital workplaces – in employee connectedness and responsive leadership – performed above their direct competitors in their respective industries. This was assessed on a basis of five indicators, including growth in market share, profit growth and employee satisfaction. The survey of 313 organisations showed that the high-performing organisations have an integrated and company-wide approach to greater employee connectedness. They achieve this by designing physical spaces, digital technologies and social networks specifically focused on enabling more collaborative work. ‘Connectivity built across silos rather than in an isolated fashion is critical to empowering employees to provide seamless customer experiences,’ van der Meulen explains. In other words, a physical and digital work environment

designed for a collaborative, integrated employee experience enables the delivery of more complex customer solutions. In terms of leadership style, high performers adopt a facilitative approach in which managers trust their employees to decide when, where, and how best to work. Management typically encourages employees to share mistakes and failures, but is also interested in their innovative ideas. Staff are allowed to be flexible, while enabling the entire organisation to learn, innovate and remain competitive. In addition, these leaders articulate a vision that links workplace design to the organisation’s strategic objectives. They encourage experimentation with new approaches to work, have a high tolerance for failure of new workplace initiatives and provide continuous learning opportunities. These companies also tend to have cross-functional digital workplace leadership teams. The research emphasised that responsive leadership - which is critical in getting full value from the digital workspace - requires a shift in mind-set. Leaders in highperforming companies facilitate workplace design rather than direct it. ‘The end result is that they empower employees to make decisions in the best interest of customer experience and their work,’ Nick van der Meulen added.

Luxury property on the Costa del Sol

Sales transactions for luxury property in Spain rose by 31 per cent in 2016 with a reported price increase of 4 per cent, signalling the significant recent uptick in demand for high-end Spanish properties. Spain's economy has recovered strongly since the Eurozone crisis and in 2016, Spain's GDP growth of 2.6 per cent exceeded that of both the UK (1.9 per cent) and Germany (1.5 per cent) and is expected to remain well ahead of the Eurozone average over the next three years. According to a recent Knight Frank report, two key property market trends stood out in 2016 which will shift the profile of Spain’s luxury property buyers. Firstly, the rise of the nonEU buyer – ‘Latin Americans now have a strong presence in Madrid, Middle Eastern buyers are active in Marbella plus Swiss purchasers in Ibiza.’ Secondly, according to the report, most prime markets now consider the €1m-€3m price band to be their most active market segment. The demand for luxury properties in Spain has increased by 80 per cent over the last 3 years. On the Costa del Sol, the Spanish property market segment has grown at such a rate that 75 per cent of properties in the country that exceed 1 million euros are now situated in just four regions in Spain; Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and the Balearics. Average prices for luxury properties along the Costa del Sol range between 600,000 to 2,000,000 euros, many of which are situated in Marbella, La Zagaleta and Sierra Blanca. In Marbella, rising sale volumes and price growth suggest confidence is returning to the market, particularly with a shift in focus on newly-built modern villas in prime locations, beachfront properties along the Golden Mile and gated communities such as Sierra Blanca, Camojan and La Zagaleta, according to the Knight Frank report. Interest from Middle Eastern buyers has also had a significant impact on the

popularity of the market in comparison to other neighbouring regions. The number of online property searches by Middle Eastern buyers on Knight Frank's website in 2014 and 2015 surged by 164 per cent. The profitability of buy-to-let properties also remains a critical point of departure for new investors of Spanish property,

particularly in prime coastal areas and popular holiday destinations such as the Costa del Sol. Spain is the third-most visited country in the world with around 60.6 million annual arrivals as well as a positive potential for further growth, thanks to a current influx of tourists from emerging markets such as China, Brazil and Mexico. 2017 is expected to be another record year for Malaga airport and it has got off to a flying start: 1,782,303 people have already travelled on 14,650 flights in January and February.

Studio living in style Studio living has become a necessity of modern life. With property prices, particularly in cities, soaring to levels preventing younger people from taking that first step on the property ladder.

Sometimes a tiny studio is the only affordable way to live and work in a City, when people are tired of flatshares and room renting. However, if you think tiny spaces are a headache, think again. There are so many inspirational examples of just how harmonious and stylish the smallest studios can be. With several rooms miraculously compressed into one, every centimetre needs to be cleverly used to its greatest effect. Here, in this newly renovated Manhattan apartment, Russian architect Peter Kostelov, has featured tucked-away furniture and used 'versatility' as his watchword for all the available space. Originally the pint-sized apartment had two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen, but this layout boxed in each space. Instead Kostelov wanted to make the whole apartment more adaptable: the living room can easily be switched around into a dining room, while a working studio turns into a guest

bedroom in no time at all. A bed slides out into the bedroom, while a table and two benches on wheels draw out to just over two metres in length into the living room. The narrow kitchen faces a brick wall across a tiled corridor, where wooden shelves fold out to form a breakfast table or extra counter space. Kostelov also paid attention to providing brighter living spaces, quieter sleeping areas away from the street, more ventilation in the living room by the large windows. Living in small quarters doesn't have to mean sacrificing style for drab storage solutions and "it's the only thing that will fit" furniture. It just takes a little creativity. There is no need to paint an entire small apartment bright white; colour can add real drama to small spaces and the addition of a mirror can cleverly mimic a doorway, creating the illusion of grander space. Forget cumbersome wardrobes. Instead go for separate storage

crates (Ikea is a one-stop mecca for storage solutions) and hanging rails, which can be hidden behind a decorative curtain. Studio rooms are often used for everything from dining and entertaining to reading and watching television. A flexible, well-planned lighting scheme can give the impression of extra space and create handy areas for different activities within the room. Well-positioned lights highlight your prized possessions and as you will not have space for many, make sure they are really important to you. Effective lighting can evoke so many different atmospheres depending on what kind of statement you want to make. Remember, these small spaces can be the bane of any studio dweller or owner's life, but they can also be a blessing in design disguise. Awkward, small spaces are often a catalyst for change, forcing you to a) clear the clutter and b) come up with clever design ideas you may never have thought of otherwise.

How to grow Alcochofas (Globe Artichokes') Here in Spain, there is not just one globe artichoke variety or even two; there are many. Of course, there are many: there’s a variety for every region and a season that extends from early spring to early summer. Here, as in France and Greece, artichokes are often eaten young, tender and raw, sliced into salads. Or when they are the size of a walnut, they are briefly fried in olive oil. Then a little water goes in and they cook until just tender. These can be marinated, used in pasta sauces or enjoyed whole. When artichokes are picked young, the stems are not hard or pithy and it’s possible to snap rather than cut them off the plant. Even the stems can be eaten by peeling off the stringy outsides and eating the soft, crisp insides with salt, like you might celery. It’s bitter and nutty. You’ll love it or people will think you're mad. I hear a lot from people with rotting clumps. These are getting too wet over the winter and rotting off; they may also be too shaded. My plants are grown on heavy clay, but in full sun.On wetter ground they need to be sheltered from the worst of the winter weather and on a slightly raised bed to aid drainage. I mulch them now to give them a boost of nutrients, lock in moisture and keep weeds down. Sow globe artichoke seeds around April indoors, hardening off in May to plant out in June. If you are in the south or somewhere warm sow outside in April, but these plants won’t flower till next year. Or buy young plants from garden centres, which can go out from mid-May onwards.Rare, heritage varieties tend to be easiest to source as seed; 'Romanesco' and 'Violetta Chioggia' from Chiltern Seeds are two fine purple-headed varieties. Artichokes need moisture over the summer. If the roots are deep, they will often find their own, but young plants will need watering in.Artichokes do best in deep, rich fertile soil that is well-drained in a sunny position. A healthy plant will have a root system 90-120cm deep. Perennial crops are grown for five to 10 years, though they can last much longer. Commercially the plants are divided every four to five years to keep up vigour. Some growers do something called stumping to their crops: cutting back hard to force the plant to produce a new flush of offshoots. If done towards the end of August and provided you can keep the plants frost-free (either covering with fleece or low cloches) over the winter, you’ll get a much earlier crop the following year. It’s also a great method to get new offshoots from an old plant without having to divide the whole thing.

Small garden? Plant vertically In a small garden, all your ways are on show. There are often no hidden bits, particularly in a terrace garden; if not from ground level, then from upstairs, where you are definitely confronted with your lot. This can be delightful and frustrating all at once. It’s hard to hide the ugly bits in a small space: the lopsided shed, the old barbecue and the weed buckets. One solution is to have aesthetically pleasing barbecues and buckets, and to recycle plastic pots and old labels. Another is to distract. Who cares if your kitchen is a bit of a mess if you create a fantastic meal? All is forgiven and forgotten as you fight over the leftovers. The garden is no different. You need to lift the eye away from the offending object; no one is drawn to a barbecue if there’s something better to look at. The best thing to do is come to think of this as the spires and saucers trick. Spires – tall, elegant flower spikes – lift the eye upwards, connecting the earth with the sky. If planted in pleasing clumps and loose drifts with the right rhythm, they introduce a clean line, a little clarity into the planting around them. Foxgloves (digitalis), dark pink verbena hastata, pale pink culver’s root (Veronicastrum Verinicum var incarnartum) white willowherb, Chamaenerion angustifolium 'Album' (which, be warned, self-seeds everywhere) and white wild indigo (Baptisia lactae) will all add elegant upright notes. Bugbane (Actae simplex Atropurporea Group), with its tall, gently bending spires of white fading to dusty pink, works well in deep shade, as long as it never dries out. Broad beans, elephant garlic, Babington leeks, and brussels sprouts do a similar thing in a mixed vegetable and flower garden. Once you have your top notes, you need to think about the rhythm section. Fill in the rest with umbels and other flat or saucer-shaped flowers such as orpine (Sedum telephium), achilleas and perennial phlox (Phlox paniculata). Herb fennel, either the green (Foeniculum vulgare) or bronze-leave (F. 'Giant Bronze') forms, is delightfully relaxed and a little dishevelled in the right way, though fennel works best towards the back of the border, because it’ll get to 2m. Or try the biennia Angelica sylvestris 'Vicar's Mead' with heads of rounded umbels above dramatic dark foliage. You can allow a little self-seeding and use the rest as slightly bitter and perfumed spice. For something delicate that likes shade, lime green perfoliate alexander (Smirnium perfoliatum) flowers in early summer before the foliage. Perennial hairy chervil (Chaerophyllum hirstum 'Roseum' is shamelessly pink and fluffy, evoking countryside hedgerows: growing to 75cm tall, it prefers partial shade and is over by early summer. If you want white flowers, Baltic parsley (Cenolophium denudatum) will do a similar job in partial shade; it likes it a little damp and flowers much later and gets taller – up to 150cm tall. Parsley, chervil, par-cel (looks like parsley, tastes like celery), caraway and sweet cicely are edible choices: eat the leaves, then leave them to flower for the bees. It’s also worth leaving a few carrots, celery and parsnips to stand over winter and flower the next spring, where they may self-sow and certainly will be much admired.

Sammy Kruz reporting for duty. A few quick tip-bits about myself to get us started. I have been living in Benidorm for the last 10 years, having tried my hand at many things from karaoke host to Radio presenter I finally found my true place in this wonderful and diverse seaside town in the Costa Blanca North! I currently manage a fabulous bar in the Old Town, Benidorm and guest DJ at a Night Club. On top of that, I am very proud to be a part of the committee that are responsible for Benidorm Pride, taking charge of the entertainment and staging of this wicked event! Enough about little old me! Let the entertainment gossip commence!

The Eurovision Song Contest 2017 will be the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It will take place in the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev, Ukraine, following Ukraine's victory at the 2016 contest in Stockholm with the song "1944", written and performed by Jamala. This will be the second time the contest takes place in Kiev, after 2005. The contest is expected to consist of two semi-finals on 9 and 11 May and the final on 13 May 2017. Celebrated TV comic Graham Norton will host the event in the UK. He has been the UK’s ESC commentator since 2009 and become increasingly popular since Terry Wogan retired from the gig. Forty-two countries will participate in the 2017 contest. Portugal and Romania are to return to the contest, both having been absent from the 2016 edition. After returning in 2016, Bosnia and Herzegovina has withdrawn again due to financial difficulties. Russia announced their withdrawal on 13 April 2017, after their singer, Yulia Samoylova, was banned from entering Ukraine after the government said she had illegally travelled directly to Crimea from Russia, a region that was annexed by Russia in 2014, to give a performance. Blooming politics, cant it just be about the music? Lucie Jones will be representing the UK with her track “Never Give Up On You”

The money Living is Spain I rarely get a chance to watch British telly. However, the one show I adore is The Graham Norton Show. The host is OK! The guests he has on the sofa are mind-blowing! A bit about him. Graham William Walker, better known by his stage name Graham Norton, is a famous Irish comedian, actor, commentator, TV presenter and writer-columnist. In 1998 he established a production company “So Television” with Graham Stuart. This company still produces Norton’s chat shows, such as the famous “So Graham Norton” and “The Graham Norton Show”. When Norton decided to sell this company in 2012, he received about $28 million! He also earns millions of dollars thanks to his acting and writings; today Norton’s income reaches well over $5 million per year!

Charity golf day to raise money for vulnerable children

El Paraiso Golf Club, Estepona, where the Spence & Clarke charity Golf Tournament takes place on June 3

A charity set up to help vulnerable children and young adults throughout Andalucia, is set to benefit from a charity tournament taking place in Estepona next month. Proceeds raised from the Spence & Clarke Charity golf tournament, being held on Saturday June 3, will go to the Malaga based Children’s charity Aldeas infantiles SOS. Venue for the tournament, now in its ninth year, is the spectacular course at the El Paraiso Golf Club on the Ctra Malaga-Cadiz 174, Urb. Benavista, Estepona and the competition is open to golfers of all abilities. In addition to the day’s golfing, the competitors will also have the opportunity to enter a raffle with some spectacular prizes and enjoy a first class lunch cooked by a top local chef. In addition, organisers are holding an auction offering the chance to bid for some great items kindly donated by the local businesses sponsoring the event. Auctioneer for the afternoon proceedings, as in previous years is Talk Radio Europe presenter, Giles Brown.

The competition format is a Texas Scramble for teams of four golfers and the cost of entry is just 85€, which includes a shared buggy. The shotgun start to the day’s golf is at 9.30am prompt. Also included in the entry fee is a Southern Indian influenced lunch cooked by local chef Paul. Anyone wishing to join just for the lunch and auction is very welcome for the price of 35€. Both prices include an automatic donation which will be paid directly to Aldeas Infantiles SOS. Organisers are also holding a putting competition and the perennially popular ‘keepy-Uppy’ competition, which have both proved extremely popular in previous years. Hoping to make the event run smoothly, organisers are requesting all green fees to be paid for in advance and full details will be sent on booking.

Designed in 1973 by Gary Player, El Paraiso is one of the most established courses on the Costa del Sol. The course is set out in the peaceful El Paraiso valley with the backdrop of the majestic 'La Concha' mountain to the north and the sparkling Mediterranean to the south. El Paraiso has the envious reputation of not only providing one of the best championship course layouts on the coast, which draws players back time and time again, but also being the friendliest international club on the coast. Anyone wishing to enter a team for the tournament or requiring more information, should contact event organizer mark Bruce on 952 834 642 or by email at mark.bruce@sevacard.com or visit www.golfthecosta.com

White Night in Malaga Spring has sprung

The White Night, the annual event promoting participatory culture, reaches its tenth year in Malaga and offers more than 200 activities across the city. Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre accompanied by the Councillor for Culture, Gemma del Corral, representatives of the participating institutions and sponsors Unicaja and Ingenia Foundation, present the programme with special activities to mark the tenth anniversary. Locals and visitors can enjoy around 220 free cultural activities in 92 areas of the city. It will begin at 7pm and end around 2am on May 20. The theme for this year has been very inspiring resulting in the proposal called “The Sensory Box. Dreams'. This is the first sensory outdoor show held

in Spain by Isaac Dospuntos. It will take place on the street Molina Patio incorporating a new location with great potential and visibility. Three passes will be held at 11pm, midnight and 1am and attendees will experience them through the senses – immersive sensations in a magical, dreamlike atmosphere. It includes decorative elements and staging with music, dance and multiple effects. For the first time, the White Night will feature a mobile application allowing visitors to know the different activities available, times and locations. On its 25th anniversary, the company Ingenia wanted to join the great cultural festival contributing as sponsors of the app “Personal Dreamer. White Night”. The app will soon be available free for Android and IOS smartphones.

Thrills and spills A HORROR film course aimed at young people is set to take place in Estepona. The workshop, entitled, “Cult Horror Films of the 21st Century”, is aimed at those over 15 years old and takes in horror films of the last twenty years which, while not positively received in their day, have achieved “cult” status over the years. The class will be led by Antonella Montinaro, Director of Exhibitions at the GACMA art gallery in Malaga, as well as by Manuel España Arjona, a director of the Literature and Cinema Conferences at the University of Malaga. The event, which takes place on May 18 from 5 to 8 pm at the Centro Cultural Padre Manuel, costs €5. Those interested can register at www.latermicamalaga.com

With this app, participants can track activities on the map of Malaga and find their location. Once they have chosen the activity of interest, they can access a page with all the details. A very useful option, especially for visitors and tourists, is that the app provides the directions finding the shortest route on the map from your location to the activity. Users can also activate their own alerts and will be able to see what is being said on social networks that night and receive instant messages with information of interest. Some of the proposals of the White Night 2017 require registration so anyone interested in attending the event can check the official website (What’s on at Lux Mundi Fuengirola) and follow the signs that have been published.

EL BOQUETILLO is to host a fun-filled festival to welcome Spring on Saturday, May 6. The event, which takes place from 12 pm, will bring in kid’s activities, music and craft workshops, paella and drinks for everyone, all for free. The festival, which is in its third year, will take place on Calles Valle Inlcan and Perez Galdos, which will be festooned with flowers to celebrate the new season. Isabel Moreno, Fuengirola’s Councillor for Festivals, explained, "we want it to be an enjoyable day for residents”, confirming there will also be rice tasting and a charanga, an ensemble playing traditional Cuban music. She added, the day will, “celebrate the arrival of spring as is fitting, and that is why we want El Boquetillo to have a real party. I take this opportunity to encourage all the residents to join in all the fun."

The art of war

What’s on at Lux Mundi Fuengirola Lux Mundi is a Diocesan Foundation with offices in Fuengirola and Torre del Mar. An Ecumenical Centre is a place where Christians of different denominations (Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, etc.) come together to promote prayer and reflection. In 1969, Father Ramon E. In September of 1994, in order to provide the same facilities that are offered in Fuengirola, a new headquarters was opened in Torre del Mar and in 2003 Lux Mundi became a Diocesan Foundation whose patrons are the Diocese of Malaga and the Jesus company. Code Breaker

Each number in the Code Breaker grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. In this week’s puzzle, 8 represents N and 18 represents H, so fill in N every time the figure 8 appears and H every time the figure 18 appears. Now using your knowledge of the English language work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you discover the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and the control grid.

Kenny, a fortune teller told me that I had the evil eye on me. It scared me and I didn’t take up her offer to remove it. I just walked away and have been having troubles ever since. What can I do? Esme G. Esme you were right to just walk away. Such people working with what they call the evil eye will offer you a solution to the problem of the evil by you paying a sum of money to remove it. Since the evil is their creation in the first place, then it is simple to remove since it doesn’t really exist! This con, which is what it is, scares many; and like you have experienced, anything subsequently negative happening to you gets blamed on the,”evil eye.” I have never ever worked in this way and never would; but I have heard of large sums quoted to remove something that just does not exist! Worry not!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

The Cosmos favours those who are able to help themselves. Consolidate your inner strengths but keep your eye on what's really on offer right now; and so look before you leap!

Aries: There is something rather wonderful in the air, as you finally realise that your patience and persistence is about to be rewarded. The midweek conjunction of Mercury and Uranus heralds enterprise and communication and finally shows you the missing link in your scheme.. Do what you are about to do with love in your heart and a spring in your step!

Leo: The Sun trines on Pluto and there will be illumination but not just yet! This annoying aspect of Pluto heralds a slowing down, when what you feel that you need right now is to accelerate. Whatever you do take your time to consider that an alternative may very well be your next move, but weigh up the pros and cons, just in case, because you can.

Taurus: The wisdom of Saturn boosts your great powers of intuition and starts the ball rolling. Why you are waiting for something to happen right now? You have to make something happen to enable you to tune into all the right channels; as this is a time to consolidate your motivation and belief. Forget what others are saying, they are only jealous

Virgo: Spend time with those who you love this week! Not only do you need the rest and relaxation; but it is time to focus on those whom you take for granted. Life may be busy, but there should always be a time to reflect and share together with those who seem to have your genuine interests at heart. Find your way of celebrating in your inimitable style

Gemini: As Mercury and Saturn tryst there comes a time when you would be wise to look fully before you leap. There are choices and you are now no longer bogged down by guilt and regrets anymore. Take what’s on offer and decide to make plans to integrate and share rather then to sit and watch, because, more than ever, a strong leader is needed.

Libra: Mars squares up to Neptune and Mercury trines with Saturn. Both these actions shake your resolve and see the balance you thrive on under some threat. Its all about loyalty. Will you stay or should you go? Personally you are not a quitter and now things are explained in greater detail you know where your heart lies and just what you have to do!

Aquarius: You need the co operation of others and may well find that if you consult with them they will be able to nip something in the bud before a drama becomes a crisis; for no good reason. You are preoccupied with the work front at the moment, where the time comes to open your eyes and take a good look around at all the alternatives that exist around you

Cancer: The energies of the Third Quarter of Moon focuses on personal development. Facing a turning point you are starting to look within to see your inner self, and it is quite surprising to you that you like what you see. Working with inner emotion is the keynote to making that much needed love connection; since, yes, two hearts can beat in tandem.

Scorpio: Change is an ever inspiring element that allows you to fearlessly face new beginnings whilst facing up to the realities of life around you. You are far more than you think that you are, and are about to find out the depths of your soul with a new project that really grabs your attention and which shows you more then ever that the future is of your making!

Pisces: Money is going nowhere and the time to pull your belt in has arrived. Your planetary leader Neptune connects with Mars midweek and this action involves the tracking of expenses and a need that all those concerned pay their share, as that’s only fair, after all! Keep finances in check because your money should be working for you, not you for it!

Sagittarius: Temper, temper! You are right to be angry but see to it that this inner anger is harnessed and that it goes no further. Pluto brings up a host of minor irritating things that have to be dealt with, not brushed under the carpet and ignored. Jupiter trines with Mars next week and all will be well, so whatever you do, hang on and shelve any decisions.

Capricorn: Saturn’s over reaction to current events may be traced to positive actions by Mercury that reveal things before you are really ready. Communication has closed down as of late and your silence is for a definite reason, though it is not one that you wish to share. You either csn or you can’t but it seems the way you play this will see someone else win!

Colours

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

Jane Cronin

I thought we could start back with a subject that wasn´t too taxing, although I did struggle a little to think of something that I haven’t written about before. I mean, I have written in the region of 300 articles about the Spanish language, and sometimes I accidentally write the same one twice. Anyway, inspiration came to me earlier on in the shower – I’ve never written about colours! I presume you know the basic ones – “rojo”, “azul”, “amarillo”, “verde”. Some people are surprised by the word for brown – “marrón” as they assume it means “maroon”. “Marrón” is also used colloquially to mean “a mess” or “a pain” (the mental association, for me any way, is “a heap of ..” something). “Blanco” obviously means “white” but it also means “blank”. “Tener la mente en blanco” means to have a blank mind, or “to go blank”. Next time this happens when you’re speaking Spanish, maybe you could remember to say “tengo la mente en blanco” – except that then it would be true – never mind! In English we say “black and white” but the Spanish put the words in the opposite order “blanco y negro”, abbreviated to B/N when discussing photos and adverts. In between those two we have “gris” which has a pronunciation closer to the English word “grease” that the first half of the word “gristle”. Orange is the same word as the fruit “naranja”

and pink is the same word as the flower “rosa”. Both of these colours, along with “crema” end in the letter “a”. Remember that colours are adjectives and as such change their endings to agree with the nouns they describe. This means that those which end in “o” change four times – “libro negro, silla negra, libros negros, sillas negras”. Those that don’t end in “o” can only change twice – “libro verde, silla verde, libros verdes, sillas verdes”. Also, remember that if the adjective ends in a consonant (e.g. azul) we add “es” to make the plural, as in “ojos azules”. Anyway, going back to “rosa”, “naranja” and “crema” these also only change twice – that is, they retain the “a” ending for both masculine and feminine singular “vestido rosa” “papel naranja” but add the “s” as usual for plurals. The word for purple varies according to shade. “Morado” is dark purple and there is also “violeta”, “lila” and “malva”. Amongst the reds is a popular colour called “granate”. We actually don’t have a common single word in English to describe this colour but I think the closest equivalents are “burgundy” or “claret”. I find that when I get students to describe

their furnishings they very quickly find the need for the word “beige”. Interestingly the Spanish have had to import this word and until recently have retained the spelling “beige”. They have now officially changed the spelling to “beis” so it is pronounced similarly to the English word “base”. Here’s one more thing about colours – how do we say “-ish”? Well, “bluish” is “azulado”, “greenish” is “verdoso” “reddish” is “rojizo” and “yellowish” is “amarillento” –good for those more imprecise moments.

The Real Mystery of Jack the Ripper. The Untold Investigation. by Darren Mark Wright

This is a plausible account by Wright using his research from casebook.org and I am assured that every fact of the case is actual fact and that these facts can be traced to their source. The investigators are a creation of the author and the conclusion made by Lieutenant Davis who has "weird, unique and imaginative ways of recreating crime scenes." Essential for interesting storytelling. His techniques are theatrical, using improvisations and revisiting scenes like a time traveller. The murder victims are included adding to the story-telling and characterisation. Multiple narration is a device used well by Wright as he seamlessly moves from 1888 to 1900 or 1905, from Whitechapel, London to South Africa during the Boer war. The story moves backwards and forwards constantly with lots of overlap and repetition. There is a purpose to this. As the investigation develops Davis uncovers more facts which develop into theories of who was responsible for committing these gruesome murders. What is satisfying is that when you finally reach the end and it is a long haul, so be warned, Wright presents you with the murderer(s) and the evidence. Lieutenant Christian Davis tells the story to a company of soldiers in the South African Republic before fighting commenced, twelve years after Jack the Ripper committed his murder spree. It was believed that an "intriguing, unsolved murder story" would distract them from the "throngs of the Great Boer War." After the war, Captain Arthur Phillip Hughes sat with a psychologist, Doctor Schultz who wanted to know about the Ripper killings. This was in 1902. The Captain has been suffering from insomnia which he assumes are connected to the info@bookworldpuertobanus.com www@bookworldpuertobanus.com | 952 816 084

war although the doctor believes it has more to do with the Ripper investigation. He retells the story explaining why the Ripper was never caught. We move into 1905 where a Doctor Brown is a tour guide taking tourists around the sites of the murders and other related locations giving his expertise to the Whitechapel murders, accompanied by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The main narrative details the murders committed during the 1888s in the East End of London. The social setting reminds one of Dickens with streets full of prostitutes, drunken binges with people passing out in the street and police patrolling the area. Bayonets were so common that you could buy them in the market for a penny. Murder was cried out so often just like the child crying wolf story. George Street was considered the most dangerous street in this locality even though the police were always patrolling the area. Emma Elizabeth Smith nee Jones was the first victim. We are told that she was beaten and raped with a blunt instrument. It had been alleged that she was savaged by a gang who had stolen her money. The truth revealed later in the story is more shocking. "They shoved some blunt instrument up her vagina. Destroyed her insides, then left her to die." She was depicted as a drunken prostitute, always getting into brawls. Her peritoneum was ruptured. The Coroner referred to the crime as being barbarous, a "brutal and dastardly assault." Hughes and Davis were very drunk when the next murder took place close to where they passed out in a stairwell in George Street. The doctor described the act as one of overkill because of the excessive number of stabbings, 38

stabs using a pen-knife and the fatal blow was a bayonet rammed through her heart. Martha Tabram. Another prostitute who had been drinking in the same public house as Hughes and Davis: The White Swan. We are told that she had been drinking with Mary Connolly and a Corporal and a Private. Several more murders followed, more destructive. There is an indication that the murderer was practising his mutilations and there would be a climax before the murders stopped. Intriguing. Worth a read if you have the stomach for it! Publishers: D.M.Productions. Adelaide. ISBN: 13: 978-1517707804 REVIEW it by Carol Naylor naylorcl@hotmail.es.

food & drink

Have an aperol spritz summer On a recent sunny weekend in Southern Austria, I spent an awful lot of time sitting around in pavement cafes, shady squares and cool, trendy bars. by Andy Mansell Fascinated by a bright orange drink in a tall, stemmed wine glass, that everyone appeared to be consuming in great quantities, I decided to try one …... an Aperol Spritz. Now, I love a Campari, which makes me rather strange I know. Campari is like Marmite to most of us. You either love it or hate it and I sit firmly in the camp of the former. However, Aperol, is like the baby cousin of the bitter Italian queen. So much sweeter, fruitier and lighter, without the heavy accent and alcohol content. And I am hooked on her. Originally produced by the Barbieri brothers in Padua, Italy, Aperol is now part of the Campari family. It’s made with typical amaro botanicals like bitter orange, gentian and cinchona, as well as rhubarb, the sour stalk that just screams summer. With less than half the alcohol of its darker, more bitter kin, it’s perfect for allday sipping and acts as a perfect mixer with stronger spirits. Hugely popular throughout, Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, Aperol is now getting a foothold into Spain and is widely available in supermarkets. Here are a few ways to try this Italian sweetheart this summer: APEROL HIGHBALL You really don’t need more than a couple fingers of Aperol, a soda top and a lemon twist. But you can always embellish this simple cocktail with some fresh citrus juice and simple syrup or even make it as you would an Americano. The ever-popular Italian aperitivo that you can still order in just about every bar in Italy is made with — one-and-a-half parts Aperol (instead of the traditional Campari) to one part sweet vermouth, topped with soda and garnished with an orange twist.

ON THE ROCKS This one is pretty self-explanatory. Aperol is perfectly tasty on its own, especially with an orange twist. Drink it outside — it’s such a pretty color in sunlight. Like an orange popsicle with a bittersweet bite. VODKA APEROL Everyone will love Aperol’s low alcohol, but sometimes you want some kick to your cooler. And you can’t always wait all day to get the buzz off Aperol spritzers. With its odourless, flavorless profile, vodka is perfect for adding a little sauce to your sipper. You may be a lush …... but no one will ever know! THE CLASSIC APEROL SPRITZ This is the classic afternoon and early evening drink I tried in Austria. Think of this one as a highball with an extra twinkle in its eye. Top a couple fingers of Aperol with bubbly instead of club soda. Prosecco is the natural sparkler for Aperol, but Cava will work just as well. Hell why not top it with Dom Perignon if you're feeling flashy. And serve it in a champagne flute with a strawberry sunk to the bottom. Perfect way to feel sexy this summer.

Turmeric health scare

Brightly coloured turmeric has been used in Indian, Asian and Moroccan cookery for centuries as an integral part of the spice mix of curries and other spicy dishes. Now, this rising star of the spice aisle has also developed a following among holistic wellness practitioners and the health conscious amongst us. However, it's safety is now in question following the death of a young San Diego woman, Jade Erick, who died after receiving a turmeric treatment intravenously as a treatment for severe eczema. NBC news in America, reported that the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death an accident. The American National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NIH) explains that turmeric has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine for breathing problems, pain, fatigue and rheumatism. Today, the spice is also used to help with inflammation, arthritis, stomach, skin and liver problems as well as cancer. A type of chemical named curcuminoid present in turmeric is thought to be the reason for its health benefits, especially with inflammation-related diseases. However, the NIH says this claim is not supported by strong studies. The organization does say that research indicates curcuminoids could reduce heart attacks in bypass patients after surgery, help with osteoarthritis pain (as well as ibuprofen) and decrease skin irritation. While generally viewed as safe, too much turmeric (as with anything) can have its dangers and certain medical conditions, like gallbladder problems or diabetes, can be exacerbated by the spice. Mixing it with other medications is not advisable. The safety of administering turmeric through an IV aren’t well known as the practice is less common. Mark Stengler, a naturopathic doctor who offers turmeric orally, told NBC News, “It hasn’t been well studied. It’s more theoretical, so it’s more investigational.” However, we should not stop using this flavourful spice in our curries and tagines, as like most things in life, a little bit of everything is good for you.

Perfect in every way! The Little Geranium By John Smith Two years ago on May the 1st 2015 Steven & Michele Saunders opened The Little Geranium in La Cala de Mijas. Originally intended to be an early retirement project for Steven but the restaurant turned out to be one of the costa´s busiest and most successful restaurants, hitting the mark bang on with its modern, sophisticated cuisine produced by Steven a Michelin chef and a Fellow Master Chef. Not only is it the talk of the Costa del Sol but the speed of its success has caught this happy couple by surprise. “What we want,” says Michele “is for when you visit our restaurant to enjoy the whole dining experience rather than just visiting to eat. We are much more than an eating place. Steven is constantly creating new arty dishes on the menus like our Scallops Seashore which is served in a wooden box with shells and stones from the beach and the scallop is cooked in its shell in pastry. We also have a new pastry chef (Elliot) who is making some amazing desserts, pasta and breads and so we have really raised the game this year. We hope that when you arrive you will feel the energy, enthusiasm and feel immediately comfortable as this little place is like a home dining room only with professional chefs on display to cook for you personally! It´s like a chefs kitchen experience and that is what I love about it being so small Steven says . Steven has a tremendous amount of experience, Bib Gourmande award, Michelin star and three Rosettes, owned a number of well known restaurants in the UK and was one of the first of the new breed of celebrity chefs appearing on TV on shows like Ready Steady Cook and writing a number of top selling cook books (more than 800,000 copies sold worldwide) as well as being one of just 30 Master chef Fellows throughout the world. Michele comes from the world of Ballet having been a professional ballet dancer and owned her own ballet schools in UK and Ireland. That’s what makes the business work says Steven ¨I cant add up , I can only cook! ¨However when you meet them both, they seem so grounded. Steven says ¨Being a chef is like being an artist sometimes you cant sell the work but you have to stick with it and believe in yourself. I was rather hoping that I wouldn’t have to die to get noticed (he jokes) and so I am trying my hardest to stay on top of the game and be continually inspirational which is what gets me out of bed every morning! Michele sums up the philosophy behind the Little Geranium as “Fine dining but not too fine. We like it to be a casual and accessible experience not too snooty but very professional and creative. We also include some of Steven ́s signature

dishes from some of his earlier work, like the slow cooked Duckling which is massively popular.” Some restaurants offer privileged guests the opportunity to dine at the ‘chef’s table’ inside the kitchen but this restaurant wants every guest to feel as if they are sitting at such a special table and every evening not only does Steven prepare each main dish, he will visit each table and give some background to his food. As the restaurant goes from strength to strength, so the couple are too and they now plan to open a new Geranium in Puerto Banus sometime this year. Michele says ¨It wont mean that Steven will leave The Little Geranium, on the contrary he will stay and keep improving it and I will take on the new one with a chef that Steven trained years ago who is working at a well known Michelin star restaurant in Belfast. Every month the menus are changed with some very interesting twists and lunch tapas menus and lunch tasting menus get changed too with a strong focus on local and organic ingredients. “Our lunch tasting (5 courses + homemade breads, including dishes like Green Gazpacho, Peruvian Cerviche, Chicken Tagine, Galician Beef Café de Paris) and is just 29€¨ It’s a fab and experimental way of dining at lunchtime especially on their sun drenched terrace. The Little geranium is an open air restaurant and takes bookings for inside and outside. Bookings pour in Michele says but we are never complacent. It’s a full time job replying to bookings but omne that Michele takes in her stride as well as looking after the company accounts, wages and looking after Steven! ¨He is a big kid and takes a lot of looking after! she jokes. The restaurant is able to accept private party bookings for up to 26 people seated at one table and for small weddings and anniversaries and other special events it can take up to about 50 people if the terrace is included. There is quite a collection of wines, many from Malaga and some from Mijas Pueblo and Ronda plus organic wines are all available. Service is important to the couple. Michele says Many restaurants focus too much on the food and not the service or the other way around. The two go hand in hand and are as equally as important. None of our clients are table numbers. We (and our fantastic team) know all of their names and many on first name terms. We look forward to welcoming people back to The Little Geranium. With an amazing amount of passion and experience Steven and Michele have very quickly become local celebrities and their wedding day was even featured on Spanish TV news and Steven´s daughters wedding was featured on a Channel 4 documentary TV show, the story of the family. Go and visit them if you haven’t already been, for an unbelievable dining experience and I am talking first hand experience here! For details on the restaurant and to make reservations visit

One in two UK kids refuses to eat veg Almost half (46 per cent) of British children REFUSE to eat vegetables, according to a new study of parents. Researchers surveyed UK parents about the eating habits of their children - and revealed a staggering 75 per cent have worries or concerns about their fussy eating. A further 52 per cent claimed their child's refusal to eat healthy foods is a major issue, according to the study. According to the report, 66 per cent of parents say trying to get their children to eat healthily is a stressful experience. Overall, 82 per cent of the parents who took part in the study claimed there are some foods that their child simply will not eat – including veg, salad, meat, fish and dairy – however according to data, vegetables are the main cause for concern, with 46 per cent of children refusing to eat them. Greens such as cabbage (43 per cent of children will not eat it), spinach (39 per cent) and broccoli (39 per cent) were among the main vegetables the nation's parents struggle to feed their children. Mushrooms (39 per cent) and beetroot (35 per cent) were also revealed as foods kids are highly likely to refuse, while 13 per cent said their child would not eat any red meat - and a further one in ten said their children will not eat an apple. A desperate 38 per cent said the stress of

mealtimes with their children has led to rows with their other half – with 59 per cent saying they often feel at the wits end with the problem. The research revealed one of the major reasons children are picky with food is because they don't know where it comes from, with 64 per cent of parents saying their children have never grown any kind of vegetable at home - compared to just 36 per cent who say they have. And of the 36 per cent who said they had tried to grow their own food, 32 per cent said it made their children more willing to try new foods. More than half of those who took part in the study (53 per cent) say they are embarrassed when at other people's houses because their children refuse to eat anything, while 64 per cent admitted they have caved in and given their children something high in sugar, salt or fat – simply to avoid a scene. The study also revealed 48 per cent of parents say they feel pressure from other parents posting pics of their children eating adventurous foods on social media. A further 60 per cent say they find family mealtimes stressful and a further 47 per cent say they avoid going to restaurants with their children because they know they won't be able to find anything on the menu their kids will eat.

Parental smoking linked to genetic changes in kids with cancer Parents who smoke may contribute to genetic changes in their kids that are associated with the most common type of childhood cancer, a recent study suggests. Some previous research has linked parental smoking to an increased risk of childhood leukaemia, but with less consistent results for mothers than for fathers. The current study is the first to link smoking by both parents to specific genetic changes in tumour cells of children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), said lead study author Adam de Smith, a researcher at the University of California San Francisco’s Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Centre. ‘Another way of looking at this is that we are seeing evidence of the toxic effects of tobacco smoke in the genes of the leukaemia cell, a molecular type of forensic pathology,’ de Smith said to Reuters. ‘These deletions are not inherited from parents but are acquired in the child’s immune cells, so we think the more important windows of tobacco exposure are during pregnancy and after birth,’ he added. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is a cancer that starts from the early version

of white blood cells called lymphocytes in the bone marrow, the soft inner part of the bones where new blood cells are made. With this type of cancer, the bone marrow makes irregular lymphocytes with errors known as deletions in their DNA, causing unchecked growth that crowds out healthy cells. For the current study, researchers examined data on pre-treatment tumour samples from 559 ALL patients in a study of childhood leukaemia cases in California. They wanted to see if any of the eight genes that are often deleted in ALL patients were missing in the tumour samples, and whether any of these deletions were associated with parental smoking habits. Roughly two thirds of the tumour samples contained at least one of these deletions, the study in Cancer Research found. Deletions were considerably more common in children whose mothers had smoked during pregnancy and after birth. For each five cigarettes smoked daily during pregnancy, there was a 22 per cent increase in the number of deletions; and for each five cigarettes smoked daily during breastfeeding, there was a 74 per cent increase in the

by Amrik Sappal, Store Director and Optometrist, Specsavers Opticas Fuengirola There was an alarming recent case of unregulated stem cell treatment for macular degeneration in the US going wrong and causing blindness. This has led to increased interest in macular degeneration and how to treat it, so this will be the focus of this month’s column. What is macular degeneration? Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss for people over the age of 55 in the western world. It is a degenerative retinal eye disease that causes progressive loss of central vision. It affects the macula, the part of the retina that enables our most acute and detailed vision for tasks such as reading, driving, recognising faces and watching television.

number of deletions. Smoking of five cigarettes daily by the mother or father before conception also was associated with a 7 per cent to 8 per cent increase in the number of deletions.Boys were found to be more sensitive to the effects of maternal smoking, including smoking that occurred pre-conception. This could be explained by the fact that male foetuses grow more rapidly, leading to increased vulnerability of developing lymphocytes to toxins that cause genetic damage, the authors note. The findings should reinforce how important it is for parents to quit or cut back tobacco use, said Dr. Marte Reigstad, a researcher at Oslo University Hospital in Norway who wasn’t involved in the study.‘ The best thing to do to reduce risk to a minimum is to cut out smoking altogether,’ Reigstad, who wasn’t involved in the study, said to Reuters. For people who grew up with parents that smoked, it’s important to understand that tobacco isn’t the only thing that causes cancer, Reigstad added. ‘Living healthy lives can also reduce cancer risk, especially concerning exercise and keeping a healthy body weight,’ Reigstad said.

Is there anything that makes you more likely to get it? According to the World Health Organisation the only established modifiable risk factor is smoking. People who smoke more than double their risk of developing AMD. Apart from quitting smoking can you do anything to prevent it? Various studies indicate a link between eating a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, particularly carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and vitamins C and E and reduced risk of macular degeneration. Experts believe they can have a positive effect as they work to neutralise potentially cell-damaging molecules called ‘free radicals’ which are thought to harm the eye’s lens and macula. What are the treatment options? The stem cell treatment we mentioned earlier is experimental and has not been FDA approved, so is risky, but there are other approved options such as anti-angiogenic drugs, laser therapy and surgery. The earlier you get a diagnosis of AMD, the greater the chance that treatment will help, so make sure you visit the optician every year if you’re over 65 and that your eye test includes testing for AMD. Specsavers Opticas are currently offering free eye tests. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store and book.

Sleep more to cut down on junk food Getting a full eight hours sleep is the holy grail for most people, but truthfully, how many of us actually reach that goal every night? A combination of work and family commitments, box sets of TV series on Netflix, catching up with friends and in Spain, fiestas, all add up to make sleep deprivation a modern phenomenon. But worse still, a new study which found sleep deprivation increased the brain’s sensitivity to food smells, making us far more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks and junk food. The findings might explain why people who don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis tend to eat more and gain weight, researchers said. For the study, which was shared at the Cognitive Neuroscience Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco, researchers analysed adults who had operated on just four hours of sleep. The participants were asked to inhale food odours such as those from crisps and cinnamon rolls while undergoing MRI scans. They were then asked to do the same experiment, but using non-food smells like fir trees. A few weeks later, the same participants repeated the experiment having had eight hours sleep the night before. When tired, participants showed greater brain activity in two areas involved in olfaction (the sense of smell) in response to food smells. When they were rested, this activity diminished. Additionally, the spike in activity wasn’t seen in response to non-food odours. Researchers said the results highlight a role for modulation in sleep dependent appetite and eating behaviour. So, the answer to losing weight is to get more sleep. Sounds so simple, but we live in the noisiest country in Europe with more fiestas than any other. So unless we want to live like hermits, it looks like the midnight pizza and kebabs and 6am chocolate and churros are here to stay.

A solutions-based service from Costa Care SL

Providing a flexible, high-standard of nursing care. How many of us have come here to live out our retirement, but are finding it increasingly hard to manage on our own? Have you (or your partner) suffered a disability or illness that makes life here increasingly difficult? Do you miss the support network of family in the UK or find yourself wondering whether residential care back in UK may be an ever more likely option? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you might be relieved to know there is an answer. Many people have little-to-no knowledge of the excellent English speaking residential facilities here on the coast providing friendly, competent, and affordable care. Many are also not aware that residential care need not be permanent. Given the enormity of the decision in considering residential care, Costa Care SL offer a trial period for users to ensure it is the right option for them – whilst offering bespoke advice and assistance to suit each user’s needs.

Costa Care SL can offer a flexible service, which includes British-trained nurses to encourage independent living either in full-time residential care or care within your own home. Nurses work to the high standard set by the NMC (the nursing council in the UK) and combine their expertise with a genuine, caring approach. Carelink SL offers a community nursing service for clients in the comfort of their own home. Free assessment is available to determine the help needed prior to the commencement of any care package, with no obligation. The services available are wide-ranging and include interpreting and assistance with doctor and hospital appointments as well as nurses or carers for your home healthcare or practical needs. Whatever your needs, flexibility is the key.

Three steps to glowing skin on the cheap

Transform your hair with one simple trick

Omega-3-rich foods fight inflammation and strengthen the skin's barrier, locking moisture in. Limit inflammation-triggering sweets (less than 25 grams of sugar a day) and alcohol (a drink a day or less); they sap moisture, enhancing fine lines and wrinkles. Put in quality-time with your pillow Don't prioritise a pricey eye cream over old-fashioned slumber. Sleep-deprived women are at higher risk for fine lines, uneven pigmentation, and sagging skin. Sleep helps you recover faster from skin stressors like dryness and sun damage. Aim for seven to nine hours a night, on your back when possible (it keeps pressure off your face) Upgrade your sunglasses Pick shades with a label that says it blocks 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays. These will help to prevent crow's-feet around the eyes, not to mention damage to your retinas. Wear them rain or shine, since rays can penetrate clouds. If you're out during peak sunny hours, double up on protection with a hat.

Your hair is one of the first things other people notice about you, so it's no wonder many of us lust after thicker, stronger, glossier hair. From rinsing your head under cold water to overnight masks, in-salon treatments to SPF sprays, there are all kinds of ways to improve your hair - but it turns out there's one very simple step you can add to your haircare regime to give you shinier, more beautiful hair. According to top hairstylists, adding a second shampoo to your shower routine is one of the best ways to achieve fantastic hair. Speaking to The Independent, hairstylist Ian Florey raves about the benefits of shampooing your hair twice. ‘The hair will become a lot stronger, shinier and healthier,’ he told them. ‘Wet the hair, then wash it twice with a non-sulphate shampoo.’ The first shampoo wash will remove dirt and residue caught up in the hair, while the second wash will help your hair benefit from the nourishing properties of the shampoo. And celebrity hairstylist George Northwood agrees. ‘I say go for two shampoos, it will definitely make it cleaner than you can with one,’ he told us. ‘It will make it feel thicker, and more voluminous – all the signs of healthy hair.’ It also creates a better surface for the products to work and be absorbed.’ So, there you go, it may make you run out of product quicker, but your hair will thank you.

Mens Health

Sometimes it’s tough being a man. Pressures from family, work, friends and social media sites can leave us feeling confused about our role in life. How to dress? Do we need to lose weight? Are we sensitive enough to our partners? Are we too sensitive with our mates? And the perennial male dilemma…..How do we get a six-pack? Well, we’ve got some good news for you. You are now reading our new RTN Men’s Health Column. Every week, we’ll cover subjects which affect us men in our daily lives, not only health related, but also covering relationships and work issues. First off this week, we’re looking at a subject that causes a lot of daily grief, not of course for those of us who have beards, but for men who prefer a smooth, stubble free face. Here are a few tips on how to get that perfect shave. EXFOLIATE - Shaving removes up to two layers of dead skin cells, which is brilliant exfoliation for the skin as dead skin cells, combined with oil and dirt on the skin surface can cause blocked pores. Warm the skin before shaving to open the pores and consider using a shaving brush to spread shave crème evenly and to lift the hairs. Most importantly, always shave with the growth of the hair, never against.

CLEANSE – After exfoliation, it is important to deep cleanse with a face wash containing tea tree oil and witch hazel, with their anti-septic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients. This helps to calm any redness and irritation post shaving. Finish by rinsing the skin with cold water to close the pores. TONE - Men have more active sebaceous glands than women, meaning we often have better nourished skin than women. However the natural oils produced can also block pores. A toning product is key to reducing the levels of oil on the skin. Key ingredients to look out for are Kaolin Clay and Witch Hazel which are both great for removing excess oil. MOISTURISE - The face is exposed to all kinds of elements, which can swiftly result in a loss of moisture in the skin. Moisturising is therefore a key step in the shave/skincare routine. Go for a good quality, unscented product, always applied with clean hands massaging the cream gently into the skin. Fill a small travel container with your favourite moisturiser for re-applying during the day, as your skin dries out after exposure to the elements. Now, if these easy to follow tips don’t keep your facial skin feeling as soft as a baby’s backside we don’t know what will.

Tech

Kick your map into touch with a new phone app It’s not easy being a pedestrian, even more so if you’ve moved to a new city, or are unfamiliar with the one you’re staying in. You can’t help feeling like the world wasn’t built for you, it was built for cars, which are bigger and scarier than you and one false move, can leave you within inches of your life. But you’re just trying to find a coffee shop that isn’t terribly crowded or an ATM that won’t charge you 5€ to withdraw your own money. Why should walking around a city be so difficult? Well, the simple truth is, it shouldn’t be and thanks to a new phone APP called Sidekix, it doesn’t have to be. The three entrepreneurs behind the app – Jenny Drezin, a native New Yorker living in Israel who’s admittedly had one too many traveling misadventures; Miron Perel, a graduate of the Technion Institute in Israel with a background in aerospace engineering; and Eli Baram, a computer science graduate of Tel Aviv University – thought that pedestrians were getting lost in the navigation shuffle and wanted to develop an app dedicated specifically to them.

Sidekix helps you navigate your way around your city using your interests as a guide

Thus Sidekix was born, a GPS platform that uses interest-based routing – suggesting places and things to do based on the user’s passions – to enhance the experience. Or, according to CEO Perel: “It’s an urban navigation app that offers you a personalized walking experience to get you to your destination in a better, more interesting way.” From fashion, food, culture, art and nightlife to simply finding safer, well-lit routes at night, Sidekix is designed to find routes based on your preferences. You can also add specifications to routes, such as stopping at an ATM and grocery store on the way to a friend’s house. And though it was developed in Israel, Sidekix is now available in more than 100 cities worldwide, including Tel Aviv, New York, London, Rome, Barcelona, Boston and San Francisco, and new cities are added regularly. It’s available for free in the App Store and Google Play.

Facebook and Google duped in $100,000,000 scam In March, it was reported that two major tech companies were tricked by a Lithuanian man into sending him over $100m (€91m). Evaldas Rimasauskas, 48, was charged with wire fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft for impersonating Quanta Computer – a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer that includes Google, Facebook and Apple as clients. On 27 April, Fortune reported that the two victims were Facebook and Google. Rimasauskas allegedly deceived the companies from at least 2013 until 2015. ‘Fraudulent phishing emails were sent to employees and agents of the victim companies, which regularly conducted multimillion-dollar transactions with [the Asian] company,’ the US Department of Justice (DOJ) said in a statement. Facebook said in a statement: ‘We recovered the bulk of the funds shortly after the incident and have been cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation.’ Likewise, Google said it had ‘detected this fraud against our vendor management team and promptly alerted the authorities. We recouped the funds and we’re pleased this matter is resolved.’ The case shows just how big an issue phishing and online fraud has become, with phishing attacks conning people and companies all over the world out of significant sums of money.

Mobile children 18 per cent of children aged between six and eight now own their own mobile phone according to research among 2,000 consumers carried out by Peli. Ownership rises to nearly 20 per cent for children aged between nine and 11 - with over 50 per cent of children over the age of 13 now owning a phone. ‘Parents don’t usually share their mobile devices with kids for speaking to someone,’ says Estefania Fenoy at Peli. ‘Parents loan their smartphones to keep their children occupied. Over 20 per cent of parents in the research said they loaned their phones to their children at restaurants; 18 per cent in a

doctor’s or dentist’s waiting room; and 22 per cent generally when outside the home. Only 29 per cent of respondents said they did not loan their mobile to their children, with the majority passing it out for at least a little while.’ In terms of time, parents allow their children to use their phone for a range of time: time ranges from 49 per cent saying they allow use for one hour a week; 33 per cent up to five hours a week; 10 per cent five to 10 hours a week; 2.5 per cent allow 1015 hours a week; and 4 per cent allow over 15 hours a week.

Fake Ferraris Busted In Spain We’re all used to seeing fake Rolex watches doing the rounds for unbelievable prices and Raybeni sunglasses masquerading as Rayban Aviators, but what about knock off cars? Is it possible to fake a Ferrari? Well, you may be surprised to know, the answer is yes and Spanish Police have the evidence to prove it, having recently busted a gang dealing in rip off versions of the supercar. They have just caught a group of fraudsters for the second time in five years, specialising in turning bog standard passenger cars into Ferrari-badged fakes and selling them to unsuspecting punters. According to Spanish detectives, the gang was caught last month in the process of transforming 14 mid-range motors into highly desirable super sports cars. The gang allegedly planned to sell the cars via the internet. Some had already been listed online as second-hand vehicles even though they were still a work in progress. Police said the investigation into the fake supercars kicked off after it became aware of “a vehicle that simulated the appearance of a sports car of the Ferrari brand infringing

the industrial property rights of the aforementioned brand”. “The agents also located the clandestine workshop ... where they found 14 vehicles in different degree of transformation. Four of them were several Ferrari models already ready for sale,” police said. “The records involved a number of parts, distinctive elements of the marques concerned, fibreglass moulds for body parts of the marques concerned, speedometers and vehicle-related documentation.” One of the items seized was a complete blank for the body of a V8-engined Ferrari F430, a mid-2000s coupe and convertible worth more than $200,000 (£160,200) second-hand. The gang appears to have sourced a number of donor cars to run underneath the fake skins. These range from what looks like a V6engined Ford Mondeo to a Pontiac Fiero and even a mystery Peugeot. The trickery didn’t just relate to fairly recent prestige models, either; at one point the vision cuts across a complete outer-skin cast of a Dino, a car potentially worth $500,000 – if it’s the real deal. Now, next time one of our lovely ‘looky looky’ men offer you a Ferrari for a knock down price ….. Look the other way!

What Next!

Flying car goes on show in Monaco A Slovakia-based company unveiled the commercial design for a flying car priced at more than €1 million in Monaco, saying it was ready for pre-orders with first deliveries expected by 2020. AeroMobil said its teardrop-like shaped AeroMobil Flying Car, displayed at the Top Marques Monaco, could switch to flight mode in less than three minutes. The wings fold away for driving on roads and swing out for flying. The company, one of several developing such flying vehicles, aims to make up to 500 units of its first commercially available edition, priced at €1.2 million to €1.5 million. To fly, the car would need an airfield or another approved place to take off, while owners would require driving and pilot licenses, AeroMobil Chief Communications Officer Stefan Vadocz said.

AeroMobil said deliveries to customers of the flying car, which Vadocz said would comply with air and road regulations, was expected to start by 2020. Before so-called flying cars become mainstream, they must overcome a host of flight safety issues to allay public fears. Governments are already studying how to regulate drones and driverless cars, while the auto and aviation industries are working on advances in software and city planning to ensure the vehicles are restricted to travel within safe corridors.

Legal cases fly at BMW over dangerous engine failures There are over thirty pending cases against BMW with regards to unexpected and potentially dangerous engine failures. More cases are expected as hundreds of enquiries about the same issue are flooding in. Faults include total loss of power including power steering at both junctions and at speed. One driver stated that “their car stopped completely in the middle lane of a motorway in heavy 120kmh traffic, leaving them in fear of their lives as vehicles swerved around them “ Another stated that “I lost all power, including his power steering, on a roundabout coming off the M50” A design fault with a chain tensioner in certain N47 engines produced between February 2007 and June 2008 causes the engine to suddenly shut down. Legal cases so far were based on BMW not paying for

repairs for free, which are said to cost about €6,000 per car. A BMW statement said: “The safety of our customers is of paramount importance at all times. Beyond standard warranty, BMW operates a generous goodwill policy and any customer concerns are assessed on a case-by-case basis. It is important that any customer with such concerns speaks to us before commissioning repairs.”” It said that only cars made between February 2007 and June 2008 were affected, as they say the production process was changed after this date. The German carmaker has advised anybody concerned to contact its customer service department or go to one of its retailers.

Both boys have returned to the Costa del Sol club inspired and encouraged by the experience. Benavista bowl for St George Benavista Bowls Club opened their doors to members and visitors last week, for a special St George’s Day celebration. Attendees at the ‘Fun Day’ were encouraged to wear the colours of St George, so it was no surprise to see them all arrive bedecked in red and white clothing, including the odd silly hat. The competitive side of proceedings on the day was a none too serious team 'trips' competition. The winning team would simply be the one being the one scoring the highest number of points. Mike Old, Audrey Shakesheff and Yvonne Paige were the members of the winning team and each received a bottle of wine. Once the serious side of the activities was over for the day, it was time for the fun to start. First on the agenda was the quenching of thirsts. This was followed by a good old traditional English lunch of bangers and mash, followed by strawberries and cream. As always, the kitchen and waiting staff came up trumps and delivered a really wholesome, tasty meal. Benavista Bowls Club are planning many of these 'fun days’ throughout the next few months of summer and they always welcome everyone along to join in with the fun. Bowls and shoes are available for hire and food is served 7 days a week. Call in or ring the club on 952 885 148 for more details.

What next for Joshua?

Last Saturday's thrilling Wembley victory over Wladimir Klitschko, in front of a post-war British record 90,000 fans, leaves former Olympic champion Anthony Joshua unbeaten in 19 fights as a professional now holder of the WBA and IBF world champion. In stopping the most dominant heavyweight of this century, the question now for Joshua is who will he fight next? The champion’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has been hitting the phones since Saturday night to make sense of a complicated landscape, but the odds are Joshua will not fight again until October. Matching an event as iconic as last week’s which delivered an expected pay day of 15 million pounds and finding an opponent capable of competing, looks a tall order in the short-term. However this hasn’t stopped the big names lining up to challenge boxing’s latest hero. First to throw his hat into the ring was Tyson Fury, who tweeted a provocative message after the match from his twitter account @tyson_fury, which read: “Well done @anthony fJoshua, good fight, you had life & death with @klitschko & I played with the guy, let’s dance “ Joshua did hit the canvas hard before toppling Klitschko, whereas Fury ducked, weaved and earned a comfortable points win by comparison in 2015. Fury who would understandably be Joshua’s preferred option stoked the fire a little further on Monday by claiming: “I can beat AJ with one arm tied behind my back. I don’t even need a warm-up.” Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua had already tweeted a message to Fury which read, "Fury, where you at baby?"

The truth remains that, substantially overweight and devoid of a boxing licence, former world champion Fury will likely need time and a warm-up bout before meeting the IBF and WBA champion. Other options are WBC champion Deontay Wilder who warned Joshua not to get "comfortable, I’m coming for you” Wilder's lack of appeal in the UK presents a difficulty, so he would probably needs at least one more fight as he is not at the stage of his career to hold pay-per-view stature yet. Wladimir Klitschko too, confirmed he holds a rematch option, adding that he believes the champion is "vulnerable" at times. "I could have done more to finish him off," said the 41-year-old. However, Joshua beieves the Ukrainian’s elder brother, Vitali, and his partner, the American actress Hayden Panettiere, will counsel against his continuing in the sport at 41 after taking a heavy beating in the 11th and final round. Most boxing pundits agree the champion’s next fight will proably be in Madison Square Garden against a lesser challenger, or at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff against WBC champion, Wilder. Joshua's rise, after being all-but beaten in the sixth round, to administer a devastating uppercut and finish in the 11th, wowed the world of boxing. American viewers tuned in and lapped up the destruction. Legendary boxers Sugar Ray Leonard and Evander Holyfield were just some of those tweeting praise, while promoter Eddie Hearn believes his fighter's profile is now "stratospheric", adding: "He is unquestionably world boxing's biggest star."

His standing as a marketable asset for more than a dozen global brands brings closer his ambition to become boxing's first billionaire, while it also heaps pressure on his broad shoulders. "The win accelerates him to be one of the world's most sought-after major properties," said sports marketing expert Alun James, UK chief executive at Four Sports and Sponsorships. "A YouGov survey showed 20% of the UK population have a favourable view of him. That is a very good number for boxing, which is not a mainstream sport. "Because he's a young black man, he also allows brands to extend into demographics they haven't worked in before. He's already working with brands from Asia to the US, the UK and Dubai. "I think he will certainly be the richest boxer ever and probably surpass Floyd Mayweather, who set the benchmark." The champion himself said The champion said: "I showed that fights are won in the gym. It gets tough and boxing isn't easy. You have to have the whole package." With every passing punch, he looks just that.

After his thrilling victory last weekend, Boxing World Champion Anthony Joshua may not fight again until October

Gold medal winner aged 101

Man Kaur, 101, on the way to her Gold medal winning sprint victory at the World masters Games in Auckland NZ last week

We’re always being told that it’s never too late to take up a new sport, but very few of us imagine we’d become a gold medal winning athlete once we did. However that didn’t deter Man Kaur, from Chandighar India, who took up sprinting rather late in life, at the age of 93 years young, following encouragement from her son Gurdev Singh, 78.Eight years later, the remarkable athlete has just won her 20th medal at the World masters Games in Auckland New Zealand. The World Masters Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years which, in terms of competitor numbers, has developed into the largest of its kind. Anyone can participate in the games so long as they are over the age of 35 though some sports will allow athletes who are younger than that. Participants compete for themselves – there are no country delegations. Beyond the age requirement and membership in that sport's governing body, there are no competition qualification requirements. The 101-year-old Indian athlete said she feels like a hero after picking up her first gold medal at the New Zealand World Masters Games.Man Kaur won gold, and the heart of the crowd, when she completed the 100m sprint at the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland on Monday. Ms Kaur is the only contender in the over 100 age grade, so effectively, unless she falls over and fails to finish, the 101 year old is guaranteed a Gold medal every time she takes to the field. But that isn’t the point, as World Masters Games director Dianne McAteer succinctly pointed out, Ms Kaur is "just everything that World Masters Games epitomises"."It's a sport for life, it's being active, it's about not letting age be a barrier to being active so she's amazing." Ms Kaur completed the 100 metres in a personal best time of, one minute and 14 seconds, but didn’t rest on her laurels, through a translator she told TV reporters she feels like she's "Mother India"She went on to win another three gold medals during the remainder of the week, in the 200 metre sprint, the shotput and in the javelin, competition, where she set a new record for her age group of 5 metres. Speaking to the press afterwards the ecstatic winner of 20 medals said, "I'm going to run again, I'm not going to give up. I will participate, there's no full stop." Speaking to the Canadian Press, her son said: "When she wins, she goes back to India, and she's excited to tell others, 'I have won so many medals from this country.' Winning makes her happy." When training at home in Chandigarh, Kaur runs a number of short distances every evening - and she believes other women should follow in her footsteps. "She encourages them, old ladies, that they should run, they should not eat wrong foods, and they should encourage their children also to take part in the Games," said her son.So, the question is, will Man Kaur be back to defend her titles at the next World Masters Games in Kansai Japan in 2021 at the age of 105? And the answer is rhetorical …… Would you back against it?
