I do not think anybody is very fond of changes; I guess it is inherent of human nature. This explains why we see so many people longing for the past nowadays. Somehow everything seemed better at any given point of time in the past, and they are becoming somewhat melancholic when looking back.

They desperately try to alter the present to a nostalgic illusion they have created.

I end this editorial with a personal note. After three years at the editorial staff, I have decided to resign as editor-in-chief. I know EuroVisie will be in good hands, but I still wish my successor all the best as the new editor-in-chief. My last quote of the year is from my favorite TV-show of all time: House M.D. People don’t change.

SES study trip 20 From the 29th of April until the 8th of May, the annual SES Study Trip took place. This year SES went to explore the Balkans again, and this time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia, where the group visited Sarajevo, Mostar, Kotor, Split and Zagreb.

Here Marlieke Ruiter tells you all about their experiences.

Friday, 29 April - Sarajevo After we arrived safely at Zagreb Airport, we still had a long bus ride ahead of us to reach our first destination, namely the capital of the beautiful country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although it was a long ride, we were luckily able to enjoy the idyllic landscape and nature this region has to offer. But finally, after arriving at our hostel in the middle of the city centre (and after conquering some stairs), we were able to enjoy Sarajevo’s nightlife.

Saturday, 30 April – Sarajevo On the second day, we went to visit the Tunnel Museum, just outside the city.

This museum contains a small part of the tunnel that was used during the siege of Sarajevo – the longest in modern history – to transport people and goods to free Bosnian territory. During our spare time in the afternoon, a part of the group went up the Trebević mountain to set eyes on the bobsleigh and luge track from the 1984 Winter Olympics. During the siege,

the track was used as an artillery position

by Bosnian Serb forces. Even though the venue is now being renovated for the 2019 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival, we could still see some sniper holes.

Sunday, 1 May – Sarajevo On this National Labour Day the city was a bit rainy and quite peaceful, and after a great night of dancing to the beats and tunes of probably Sarajevo’s best techno DJs, we enjoyed a city tour. Due to the movable recent history of the city, most of the stories told by our guides were stories they had experienced themselves – though they were not much older than us. Even twenty years after the Bosnian war, the city still holds quite some reminders of war, where the shrapnel holes still mark high-rise apartment blocks. In the afternoon we went back to the picturesque old town, which was largely untouched, to fill our stomachs with cevapis and burek. Afterwards,

we went to see the Gallery 11/07/95, where the impressive exposition and documentaries displayed the cruel happenings of Srebrenica.

Monday, 2 May – Mostar, Kotor On our fourth day we hit the road again, heading to a smaller town this time.

Before we traded Bosnia for the beautiful country of Montenegro, we made a stop of a couple of hours in Mostar – which is famous for its quite touristy, but still very pretty bridge and is also the most important city of the Herzegovina region.

In the evening we arrived in the pouring rain and for a moment the hostel seemed as though it did not want to be found, but after that it could only get better. We dried up, got ourselves a proper meal and enjoyed our evening.

Tuesday, 3 May – Kotor The next day in Kotor the weather was unexpectedly good and we went on a boat through the bay of Kotor, where we

016: sakosplitza! visited Sveti Đorđe and Perast, a small island and town near Kotor. As you can see, the bay of Kotor was the perfect location to do some photoshooting.

With its nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovćen, Kotor and its surrounding area form an impressive and picturesque Mediterranean landscape.

Moreover, Kotor has one of the bestpreserved medieval old towns on the Adriatic coast.

Since there were not many places to go out, we ended up spending our nights drinking beer and playing games in our hostel, to the displeasure of our host (we are truly sorry). And while most folks spared their energy, a small and daring group went up the hill and watched the sunrise over Kotor.

Wednesday and Thursday, 4-5 May – Split Late in the afternoon we arrived at our third destination, the sunny – and unfortunately very touristy – city of Split. The weather was great and due to our flexible schedule, we were able to recover from our journeys with a beer

on the beach. On the second day, we enjoyed a tour through the Diocletion Palace and the emperor’s private quarters; also used as Game of Thrones filming locations. Altogether, Split gave us the complete holiday package, with good weather, nice clubs, beautiful sights and delicious food (wine and fish in particular).

Friday, 6 May – Zagreb While arriving in our last capital to visit, we were in a big rush to be on time for our first activity. After freshening up quickly, we went straight to the Dutch Embassy in Croatia. Here, we did not only meet the Embassy staff, but also EuroVisie’s designer Emiel, who paid us an unannounced visit as well! He took a few days off his intern life to join us in Zagreb. At night we went to probably the most edgy clubbish place of our trip, but then again, it was quite awesome as well.

Saturday and Sunday, 7-8 May – Zagreb On our last day, we explored Zagreb in a city tour and we paid a visit to

the interesting Museum of Broken Relationships. Since we would be leaving early in the morning the day after to catch our flight, the Board and Committee thought it was a responsible idea to go to bed early. Though we kept our group together with a collective dinner and game, the spirit of going out was too strong. Even on our last night, we stayed up late to enjoy every hour we had left of this trip.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank all our participants for joining us.

We hope you have had a great time as well. For us, I can say that we loved your stories, dances, funny (or less funny) jokes, grumpy morning faces, energy – in other words: we loved getting to know you a little bit better.

I

t is undebatable that the recent influx of refugees into Europe has created a rift within our societies. If it really produced a new one, or merely highlighted one that was slumbering beneath the surface of everyday discourse already, only time can tell. But what is clear is that we have been forced to split into two camps, the pros and the cons, the train station applauders and the angry moustachioed protesters, the good and the evil, the left and right. Both are staunchly defensive of the complete truth of their argument, and both are, in a comically religious way, almost fanatically opposed to each other. But have we been unfair to dismiss the opposition’s position right away? Today, let us try to have an unbiased look at what the New Right fears. Let us talk about the ghost of their sweat-soaked night terrors. Let’s talk about Political Islam.

To gain the necessary knowledge to tackle this complex issue within the confines of a two-page article, EuroVisie had a chat with Parvez Alam. Parvez hails from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and is currently taking a few courses at the UvA to complement his professional career as a writer, after having to leave his home country due to the lifethreatening situation that secular writers experience there. His topics include the history of Islam, religious violence, and the political situation on the Indian subcontinent.

To begin with, it might be a good idea to remind ourselves of the basics: Political Islam as we understand it today is a modern phenomenon. A really new thing in fact, only really becoming a political force of its own in the last sixty years, and after, when the failure of Panarabism paved the way for it to take over the vacated space of Arab nationalism and similar ideologies. It has since grown to become a dominating factor in world politics, shaping policy from California to Indonesia. But where does its power come from?

Parvez attests at least some of Islam’s political potential to the origin of the religion itself: “There is a specific dilemma still unresolved. Muhammad was not just a religious leader, he was also a political one, ever since he

established an Ummah in Medina.” For centuries, Muslim leaders and monarchs related their power to him and derived their political legitimacy from alleged blood ties or tribal affiliation with the Prophet. The concept of intertwined religious and worldly authority emerged most prominently in the great schism after the death of Muhammad, leading to the enduring partition into Sunni and Shia. Other than the schisms of Christianity, this partition was about politics, not religion. Despite Muslim infighting and the loss of centralised authority after the first caliphate, ideas and dreams of unity under one righteous caliph prospered throughout history.

In our discussion, Parvez mentions an interesting point in time during the seventeenth century, when the vast majority of Muslims was ruled by one of a triumvirate of caliph-emperors. The

Ottoman sultan, claiming the caliphate until their deposition in 1923, the Safavid Shahanshah of greater Persia in the centre, claiming the Shia equivalent of the Imamate, and the persianate Mughal Emperors of India, who also assumed the title of caliph on select occasions.

“The most common title that all of them used was The Shadow of God on Earth”, tells Parvez. It stands to reason that the Muslim world, much like medieval and early modern Europe, shared a yearning for the figure of a universal supreme ruler, who would unify the realm both worldly and spiritually. This desire for the unity of powers in the hands of one ruler became the staple of power consolidation

throughout the Muslim world, with almost every new ruler from Morocco to Persia declaring himself not king, but caliph.

During some parts of the twelfth century, as much as three parallel dynasties claimed the caliphate for themselves.

Despite the last self-declared caliph Abdülmecid II losing his throne and his title in 1923, the idea never left the minds of the people. Muslim Brothers and groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir have called for a renewed caliphate. Most recently, an Iraqi mercenary named Ibrahim al-Badri took the mantle and was declared caliph al-Baghdadi, not just of Daesh, but also as a claimant to the throne of the world.

It is interesting to note that Abu Bakr states himself to be Qurayshi, another alleged blood tie to the prophet.

This legacy of political entanglement is what complicates the West’s relationship with Islam, and with the people following it. It is the source of the Right’s ludicrous accusations that Muslims aspire to world domination, and that they will start in Europe, which they are now colonising. Above all, however, it complicates something else entirely: the relationship with their own religion of modern Muslims, those who live in a mostly secular world and are liberal themselves. Parvez summarises the dilemma they face in simple terms: “They do think that religion and politics can be separated without devaluing Islam,” he says, referencing the strong commitment Muslim societies have made to secularism in the past century, “but they cannot simply deny the dual characteristic of Muhammad’s life, a political and a religious one.” It is this paradoxical gap within religion, states Parvez, that allows modern Political Islam to prosper. This is an Islam not dominated by individual followers of the faith, but by staunchly political parties, often organised and led much more according to modern standards than to the ideals of the early Islamic Ummah.

Groups like Jamaat e Islami in India, Pakistan and, very visibly, Bangladesh are organised according to strong ideals and are focused on a tight and loyal group of leaders supporting one head.

“You will find in their texts that they were influenced by Mussolini’s Fascist Party.

According to Maududi, the true Islamic State looks somewhat like Fascism,”

states Parvez. They claim the same as caliphs or sultans did, which is God’s sovereignty on earth. Purely incidentally, this is also their own sovereignty. Much like Christianity, the many variations of Islam show an extensive potential to strengthen political power. They serve as an excellent support for autocratic rule and were used effectively to bolster more than two dozen dynasties in their time, consolidating power more efficiently than Christianity, and more quickly than violence. Until this point, no real difference exists between the political components of the religions and their spheres of influence. The various sects of Islam were never really confronted though, like organised European religion was confronted by the people in the wake of the Enlightenment.

Using the Indian subcontinent as an example, Parvez summarises the situation as follows: “So, you see, in Europe the monarchy was broken by the people. And in what you call the Muslim world, by colonialism.” He sees secularism as an integral part of that confrontation of ancient systems of power. While Europe went through that development more or less organically, it was harshly taken away from most of the “Muslim World” by developments beyond their control. Now, a good sixty years after direct colonialism, it is still struggling with the effects of that interrupted development. Parvez often refers to his home country of Bangladesh as an illustration. There, secularisation has been slowly rolled back over time since independence. “The situation in Bangladesh is more like late eighteenth and early nineteenth century Europe,” he says as he describes Bangladeshi Islamists using and strengthening laws

that have their discursive roots in the country’s British-created penal code to further their control of society. One such law specifically concerns the “hurting of religious feelings”. It was written

by Lord Mackle, a British legal and educational reformist, and adherent to the then-mainstream philosophical idea

of Sentimentalism. “No Sharia law exists that I know of that protects people’s sentiments,” comments Parvez, “that is one of the reasons why I call the current Bangladeshi mainstream Islamist political trend ‘Sentimental Islamism’. Mainstream Islamists in Bangladesh do not talk about apostasy or blasphemy. They talk about protecting their feelings.” Parvez then goes on to describe how this creeping assimilation has allowed Islamism to grow even under the country’s distinctly secular constitution, and how the secular bourgeoisie similar to that of the early nineteenth century Europe as champions of secularisation only recently appeared in the Muslim world. “They are very recent in our history, you have also seen

them in Tahrir square. Žižek called them ‘salaried bourgeois’. And they are not doing very well at this moment.” Maybe this is what Political Islam is all about: a society, torn from the intellectual development of the early nineteenth century, tossed back into a world of poverty, international influencing and the Internet, struggling to make sense of what they see with what they have. But Muhammad did not leave a political heir, just an explicit religious legacy. From the mouth of a servant of God, should that not be enough of a sign?

Political Islam is not inherently evil, nor is it inherently good. It can, however, cause a lot of evil, like in the case of my friend Parvez, who was forced from his home after his friends were brutally murdered. He will have the last word: “A poor country like Bangladesh cannot survive as a secular country, as long as there are monarchies in Saudi Arabia and in the Gulf States, where a large number of Bangladeshi live as slaves, providing bloodlines to the country’s economy.

They bring remittance, but they also bring a very different form of Islam back to the country, a salafist version of Islam that provides legitimacy to Saudi monarchs, and also the caliphate of ISIS. The bargaining power these countries have over us, or their flow of funding for the Islamists and the Jihadists is immense. It is as simple as this: as long as the Western world supports medieval monarchies that have oil money, the most modern weapons in the world, and funds global jihadism, how can we successfully remain a secular democracy? Even after giving a lot of blood for it for decade after decade.”

esterday my mobile phone suddenly, out of the blue, broke into a loud, wailing howl. It was as if a goldfish leapt out of its bowl, morphed into a massive rottweiler and hurled itself at my jugular; or a blackbird flipping its merry warbling into full-blast Rammstein. I mean, I have set my ringtones to inoffensive yet recognizable, tasteful signatures: piano chords from John Coltrane’s “My favourite Things”, the mandolin intro to “Maggie Mae”, a subtle xylophone whisper, a windchime at dawn... And here we get a chorus of, what, twelve police squad cars chasing Darth Vader?

I frantically tried to stifle the offensive wails, which made it sound as if I was roasting toddlers in my office, then checked what the heck was going on.

It turned out to be an incoming text message from some sociopathic outfit calling itself NL-Alert, merrily telling me that this was just a test of NL-Alert, no reason to worry, everything hunkydory and more information at wayway-way NL-Alert puntanell.

The website cheerfully explained that NL-Alert, out of the kindness of their heart, will warn me in case of a catastrophe, and they do this by means of cell broadcasts to all mobile phones. Boy did that make me feel good. Next time a terrorist bomb goes up in the neighbourhood (and we all know that this can, no WILL happen

IMMINENTLY!). I will not only hear the blast but also the demented howling of my mobile phone. In addition there will be test blasts on selected Mondays and – get this – on 5 December. I kid you not! All of Holland will be haunted by shrieking banshees as kids prepare for St. Nicholas!

Mobile phones are a very intimate part of our bodies. When they ring or buzz, our hands reach for them instinctively, without thinking, like a kneejerk when someone paws your crotch or taps your meniscus: it is a reflex. As a colleague pointed out: we are all of us, functionally, cyborgs already, because our ringtones are wired directly into our neural pathways. Now, NL-Alert’s website does not provide a believable explanation how they transmitted, not only that text message, but also remote-programmed my phone to break out in that demented blaring sound that went with it. Someone messed around with a very intimate part of me. Some engineering nerds feel free to administer us the equivalent of an electroshock a couple of times a year because – erm… because what? Ah… security!

Yes, folks, this is for our security. I am not quite sure how that works.

Accompanying a catastrophe by cartoon noises and megawatt whoopee-cushions does not seem to make the world a safer place, somehow. But then, that is security for June 2016

you. That word has turned into one of the most Orwellian, sinister pieces of mendacious bullshit in the language.

If you tamper with your iPhone, Apple will brick it with the infamous “error 53” message, out of concern for “customer security”. Racism masks itself as a “security” concern for women and kids, eternally at risk from predatory immigrants and Muslims.

Cops and bullish bosses tell us to move away because they “cannot guarantee our security”. In short: security is a way of scaremongering, and scaremongering is a way of messing with people’s freedom.

Here is the paradox of the 2010s: The state is abdicating its public duties, privatizes and deregulates, delivers essential public services and civic welfare to the invisible hand of the marketplace (and to the geeks of NL-Alert). We are told to embrace a risk society. It is called freedom: the freedom to let the market do its work, the freedom of neoliberal economics, the freedom to troll hate speech in social media. And at the same time our freedom is being curtailed by lots and lots of busybodies invoking our “security” and telling us, not to embrace risk, but to be very, very afraid. All I can say is: take your noisy, intrusive bogus security out of my bloody phone.

the copperdick owl

and other ways to scare kids to death EuroVisie’s Levente Vervoort takes a look into the magical world of children, and the mythical creatures used to scare the living daylights out of them.

D

id your parents tell you any scary stories to keep you from staying up late, not finishing your plate or masturbating?

They might have, and they would certainly not be the first parents to do so. Take, for example, the DutchGermanic Nikker, that has been recorded as early as the fifteenth century. He is a black water devil that lives in ponds, rivers and lakes, that might grab you if you come too close – and God knows what may happen next. Surely, we would not want our kids to drown, so why not personify that horrible death by inventing a malicious kelp monster. Most parents (and scientists) nowadays agree that rewarding children for positive behaviour is a much more effective way of influencing their choices and

ideas. This is a relatively modern phenomenon, but the opposite

pacifist parents that use Jesus Nikes what they are actually meant for (not hitting children, that is) happily evoke a long tradition of folkloric mythical creatures that exist solely to scare the pants off their ignorant kids. This unknowingness comes in handy as well - young children would not really care for the morale of a fairy tale if they knew it was a fairy tale, would they? Thus, past generations have ingeniously cooked up a wide range of things, people, creatures, beings and places that only really exist if you believe in them. Now, the odd elf seems a rather harmless forest fairy, but if you take a closer look into the history of baby-scaring, humanity’s true vicious nature comes to light. I would like to think the first scare-creatures were very much

purpose-built. Scary as this water devil is, it probably prevented many innocent children from drowning.

But in Hungary, children have to fear the Rézfaszú Bagoly, who is – I am sorry to say – a Copper-Dick Owl. Now, I have never (been blessed to have) seen an owl’s private parts, so I have a hard time believing children would even recognize the metal penis if the bird presented its genital bling. Differently from the Nikker, the Copper-Dick Owl has no specific set of tasks, so he can conveniently be summoned to prevent children from doing, pretty much, anything.

“You better brush your teeth, or the Copper-Dick Owl might come visit you while you’re sleeping!” – and that is not the kind of ooh-hoo you would want that time of day. Tracing

back the origins of the Copper-Dick Owl is difficult, but some say it might be a representation of medieval

So, for hundreds of years children were to be scared and violated by kidnapping water devils, nudist predator birds, bogeymen, trolls, witches, kobolds, gnomes, ghosts, Krampuses and Black Petes. This scary line-up puts the latter in some perspective. Because sadly, children are now also rewarded for their good behaviour by Santa Claus or Sinterklaas, which makes conservative adult believers think the mythical characters used to frighten, should still exist. But the next time you hear people say tradition should prescribe our choices, just think about the Copper-Dick Owl and hope he will give them a thorough birdjob at night.

Vanwege de globalisering waar ook de verspreiding van democratische principes een onderdeel van is, is er een proliferatie van taal en talen waar te nemen, ook in Europa. Er gaan stemmen op om dit alles te vereenvoudigen en over te gaan op een taal, bijvoorbeeld ‘world’ of ‘global’ English. Maar is een dergelijk streven wel te verenigen met het principe van rechtvaardigheid in de zin van John Rawls?

D

e Europese Unie erkent 24 officiële talen. Dit betekent dat deze talen in principe als taal van communicatie in de Europese instellingen in Brussel kunnen worden gebruikt. Dit is slechts een fractie van het aantal talen dat in Europa gesproken worden. Er zijn ruwweg vier hoofdgroepen te onderscheiden, namelijk (1) de officiële talen van de lidstaten van de Unie; (2) de regionale- en minderheidstalen, die in de verschillende lidstaten van de Unie worden gesproken; (3) de migrantentalen die tot op heden niet of nauwelijks worden erkend en (4) de internationale communicatietalen, zoals het Engels, Duits en Frans maar ook het Russisch, Chinees, en Spaans.

Laten we bij ieder van deze vier groepen een aantal opmerkingen plaatsen.

(1) De officiële talen van de lidstaten zijn dat vaak geworden vanwege de opkomst van het moderne nationalisme dat gestuurd werd door het gidsprincipe “een volk, een natie, een taal”. Hoewel dat principe in de huidige globaliserende wereld niet langer houdbaar is, zijn de zogeheten nationale talen robuuste constructies die wel tegen een stootje kunnen. Ze doen dienst als lingua franca binnen de nationale staten in Europa. We moeten er vanuit gaan dat deze talen nog lang niet afgeschreven zijn en belangrijke dragers zijn van cultuur. Nederlands recht en nationale geschiedenis zijn zonder het Nederlands een lege dop en het functioneren van onze samenleving zou zonder het Nederlands ernstig ondermijnd worden.

(2) Regionale en minderheidstalen hebben de afgelopen decennia meer erkenning gekregen als onderdeel van universele mensenrechten en verboden op het discrimineren van personen

vanwege de zogeheten moedertaal die ze spreken. Vooral de Raad van Europa heeft zich daarvoor sterk gemaakt.

Met de instelling van het Taalcharta zijn opeens zo’n zestig regionale of minderheidstalen erkend door de staten waar ze gesproken worden.

Vaak is het gebruik van deze talen aan restricties gebonden, zoals een territoriale verankering, of een minimum aan sprekers, maar toch zijn er ineens flink wat meer officiële talen in Europa.

Een aantal van hen probeert een plek te verwerven onder de Brusselse zon. Denk maar eens aan het Catalaans.

(3) Met de komst van migranten naar Europa in de laatste decennia worden er heel veel nieuwe en soms ook onbekende talen gesproken. Bekendere voorbeelden zijn het Turks en allerlei vormen van het Arabisch. Deze talen worden echter nauwelijks erkend, hoewel ze een wezenlijk onderdeel uitmaken van de (transnationale) identiteit van hun sprekers. In het huidige neoliberale klimaat wordt vaak geredeneerd dat sprekers van migrantentalen zo snel mogelijk de taal van het land van aankomst moeten leren om succesvol te zijn op de arbeidsmarkt. Het vasthouden aan de eigen taalidentiteit zou een obstakel daartoe vormen. Dit laatste is overigens nooit in serieus wetenschappelijk onderzoek aangetoond. Het huidige maatschappelijke klimaat leidt er wel toe dat dergelijke (ongefundeerde) opinies de overhand krijgen en er geprobeerd wordt migranten talig te assimileren wat (zonder dwang) weinig kans van slagen heeft. Ook de migrantentalen zijn en blijven onder ons.

(4) Soms wordt beweerd dat de verspreiding van internationale communicatietalen zoals het Engels de oplossing is voor de talenpuzzel in de wereld en misschien wel voor Europa en de Europese Unie. Het is ontegenzeggelijk waar dat de opmars van het Engels in de Brusselse instellingen doorzet. Dat geldt ook voor de academische wereld en andere domeinen van het maatschappelijk leven, zoals handel en ICT. Maar een onderzoek van Eurobarometer uit 2012 laat zien dat de verspreiding van het Engels in de Europese lidstaten minder hard gaat dan

aangenomen wordt. Slechts iets meer dan 51 procent van de EU-Europeanen spreekt Engels en mijn inschatting is dat het gros van deze sprekers het Engels slechts op een basisniveau beheerst: ‘hello, goodbye’. Of dat een goede uitgangspositie is voor de invoering van het Engels als mondiale of Europese lingua franca waag ik te betwijfelen.

Er zijn ongetwijfeld dwingende argumenten om de meertaligheid in Europa te willen afschaffen en te vervangen door een eentalig regime.

Voorstanders verwijzen met graagte naar rationaliseringslagen, modernisering, het efficiënter maken van de samenleving, het voordeel voor de economische groei en handel, etc. Voorstanders van meertaligheid, dat wil zeggen het uitbreiden van de vier categorieën zoals hierboven uiteengezet wijzen erop dat

meertalige samenlevingen en individuen hoger scoren in creativiteitstesten.

Hoewel al deze argumenten in het wetenschappelijke debat een belangrijke rol spelen, is er een nieuwe discipline opgekomen die wortelt in de politieke filosofie van de Amerikaanse filosoof John Rawls en zwaarder gaat wegen in het debat. Het is simpelweg een daad van rechtvaardigheid om je eigen taal te spreken in een meertalige context en je verwacht van een rechtvaardige omgeving dat dat gerespecteerd wordt. Het assimileren van anderstalige sprekers is simpelweg ‘not done’.

amala legde met haar lied 1944 de vinger op de zere plek. Met haar persoonlijke lied refereert ze aan de deportatie van Krim-Tataren, die meer dan honderdduizend mensen het leven heeft gekost. Het Sovjetregime beschuldigde Krim-Tataren van collaboratie met Nazi-Duitsland en als consequentie daarvan werd een groot deel van de populatie gedeporteerd naar Siberië. In werkelijkheid zou Jozef Stalin de wil voor onafhankelijkheid van de Krim de kop in willen drukken. Het bezit van de Krim was een strategisch sterke plek vanwege haar ligging aan de Zwarte Zee en Stalin wilde voorkomen dat een onafhankelijkheidsbeweging roet in het eten zou gooien. Hoewel de deportatie door meerdere partijen is erkend als genocide, heeft het Hooggerechtshof van de Sovjet-Unie in 1989 verklaard dat de deportatie van de Krim-Tataren kan worden gezien als een zware misdaad.

Het woord genocide is echter niet in de mond genomen door de Sovjets.

Wie had gedacht dat het Eurovisie Songfestival de eer van wellicht de grootste natie in Europa zou aantasten? Rusland was not amused toen Jamala, een Krim-Tataarse zangeres, namens Oekraïne won met haar nummer 1944. Dit relletje heeft veel te maken met eeuwigdurende conflicten tussen Oekraïne en Rusland over hoe omstreden beleid van het voormalige Sovjetregime beoordeeld zou moeten worden.

De vraag hoe men misdaden van Stalin zou moeten benoemen, is niets nieuws.

Stalin zou namelijk een paar jaar voor de vermeende genocide van 1944 al een genocide hebben gepland en uitgevoerd in Oekraïne in 1932-1933. In deze jaren heerste er een hongersnood. Hoewel het gebrek aan voedsel op het eerste gezicht te wijten leek aan misoogsten en wanbeleid, zou Stalin toch een hand hebben gehad in uitvergroten van de gevolgen van de hongersnood. De schattingen lopen zeer uiteen, maar feit is dat miljoenen slachtoffers zijn gevallen als gevolg van honger of terreur.

beheerst door het Sovjetbewind. Stalin gebood dat alle voedselbronnen ter beschikking aan de Russische bevolking werden gesteld. Een groot deel van de Oekraïense bevolking had daardoor geen toegang meer tot eten. Daarnaast werd de bevolking sterk onderdrukt. Mensen konden door het Rode leger onmiddellijk gestraft worden als bleek dat ze voedsel achter de hand hielden of als ze, uit pure wanhoop, mensenvlees op het menu hadden staan. Ook in deze zaak zou Stalin Oekraïense nationalisten de das om willen doen. En ook in dit geval lijken de Sovjets de hongersnood te hebben gebagatelliseerd door te verklaren dat ‘moeilijkheden met voedsel’ ten grondslag lagen aan deze hongersnood.

Ook Naiman maakt een bruggetje met de Holocaust en verklaart dat de erkenning van de genocide door Nazi-Duitsland snel werd bereikt doordat de Duitse regering wetenschappelijk onderzoek heeft verricht naar de misdaden die zijn gepleegd door het voormalige Naziregime. In het geval van de vermeende genociden die zijn gepleegd door het Sovjetregime zal erkenning door In Oekraïense literatuur wordt naar deze middel van wetenschappelijk onderzoek gebeurtenis verwezen als ‘Holodomor’, nog een lastige opgave blijken. De oftewel moord door middel van Russische regering voelt weinig druk georganiseerde hongersnood. Het woord van de internationale gemeenschap, Holodomor heeft iets wat wel het geval weg van het woord was bij Duitsland na Holocaust. dwerghomo’s in discretie Hoe is het om homo te zijn in een microstaat? Eind mei publiceerde ILGA-Europe haar jaarlijkse rapport over de bescherming van LHBTI’ers. Men vergeet het bestaan van de Europese microstaten nog al eens. Dat geldt echter ook voor de lokale LHBTI-rechten – de dwergstaatjes bungelen namelijk onderaan de lijst.

et rapport van de Europese tak van ILGA (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association) brengt de ontwikkelingen op het gebied van LHBTI-rechten van 49 Europese landen in kaart. De microstaten Andorra (25), Liechtenstein (37), San Marino (41) en Monaco (45), scoren vergelijkbare posities als Rusland, Georgië en Oekraïne (bekend wegens anti-homowetten, georganiseerde gaybashing etc.) en breken daarmee de West-Europese trend van progressieve wetsverschuivingen.

Volgens Björn van Roozendaal, programmadirecteur van de Rainbow Map, is de ranking een juridische meetlat - geen sociale acceptatiemaatstaf. ‘‘Het ontbreken van wetten in een land die LHBTI’ers beschermen, wil niet zeggen dat men last heeft van discriminatie. Maar het feit dat ze

niet kunnen aankloppen bij de staat en LHBTI-rechten niet tot nauwelijks op de politieke agenda staan, maakt wetgeving een belangrijke indicator voor het meten van leefbaarheid, tolerantie en acceptatie,’’ benadrukt Van Roozendaal in een telefoongesprek.

Volgens de LHBTI-lobbyist mist in deze landen het draagvlak om een actieve beweging op touw te zetten. In Monaco is geen enkele vereniging actief. In Andorra, Liechtenstein en San Marino maar één - al hebben ze weinig leden en niet het bereik dat bijvoorbeeld het Nederlandse COC heeft. Zichtbaarheid, hét sleutelwoord voor acceptatie en tolerantie, is daarmee vaak te marginaal om een politieke discussie te openen.

Ook is er geen druk vanuit hogere hand - de microstaten zijn geen lid van de Europese Unie. Het initiatief moet dus

vanuit de landelijke politiek komen. De lokale gemeentebesturen (zo noem ik de staatjes even, gezien hun vergelijkbare grote met een gemeente als Heemskerk) zijn echter aartsconservatief en veelal strenggelovig.

In het alpine microvorstendom Liechtenstein is prins Hans Adam II sinds 1989 aan de macht. Tijdens de nieuwjaarstoespraak van dit jaar sprak de regent zich fel uit tegen het homohuwelijk en adoptie voor homoseksuele mannen. Volgens Amos Kaufmann, bestuurslid van FLAY, dé gayvereniging in Liechtenstein, vergeleek hij homoseksualiteit met pedofilie. ‘‘De vorst zei letterlijk ‘ik vind het onverantwoordelijk om kleine jongens naar twee mannen te laten komen’.

Iedereen wist wat hij daarmee bedoelde,’’ zegt Kaufmann in een chatgesprek.

Hoewel de Liechtensteinse politiek sterk wordt beïnvloed door ontwikkelingen in naburig Oostenrijk en Zwitserland (waar adoptie is toegestaan), zijn dit soort uitspraken meer dan zorgelijk, omdat meneer Adam II zo ongeveer het gehele bestel domineert. In 2003 werd een grondwetswijziging aangenomen waarin de vorst meer macht werd toegekend.

Zo mag hij zich sindsdien bemoeien met de benoeming van rechters, mag hij de door het parlement aangenomen wetten blokkeren en de regering zonder opgaaf naar huis sturen.

Dan is er de rooms-katholieke kerk, waar traditionele familiewaarden hoog in het vaandel staan. Probeer maar eens uit de kast te komen en je baan te behouden in een landje van 30.000 inwoners, in een streng-katholieke ‘ons-kent-ons’samenleving. Neem San Marino, de oudste, nog bestaande republiek ter

wereld – waar in een vagelijke wet staat dat openbare uitingen van homoseksueel contact bestraft kunnen worden met drie maanden tot een jaar celstraf. Deze wordt niet nageleefd ofwel besproken, maar het moge duidelijk zijn dat je moet oppassen met wie je hand in hand loopt. ‘‘Het is een gemeenschap die elkaar goed kent, daarom gaat het verenigingsleven informeel en ondergronds,’’ stelt Van Roozendaal die het dwergstaatje onlangs bezocht - dit terwijl het middenin de meest progressieve regio van Italië ligt. Een woordvoerder van de San Marinese organisatie Associazione Culturale LGBT schreef in een rapport uit 2014: ‘‘Men is bang. LHBT’ers zijn bang hun baan te verliezen als ze uit de kast komen. Er zijn hier veel homo’s en lesbiennes die een dubbelleven leiden. In San Marino zijn ze hetero, maar in de avond gaan ze naar Rimini om zichzelf te zijn.’’

verhaal. ‘‘We zijn niet zichtbaar in de samenleving, behalve met een marktkraampje op de nationale feestdag en als er soms wordt gediscussieerd in kranten of op internet,’’ zegt Kaufmann. ‘‘En er bestaat weinig anonimiteit, waardoor veel mensen hun seksualiteit privé houden of het in Zürich of Wenen uitleven.’’

Liechtenstein bestaat uit elf kleine dorpjes, San Marino uit negen. Het is überhaupt gangbaar voor de jeugd in microstaten om naar de stad te trekken voor studie of werk – wat per definitie in het buitenland is. Laat staan voor LHBTI-ers, die in de stad hun seksuele oriëntatie en/of genderidentiteit kunnen uitpluizen, in de anonimiteit die ze thuis missen. Noem het een gaydrain. Feit is dat velen niet terugkomen, en daarmee de voedingsbodem voor een discussie over diversiteit en gender wegvalt. ‘‘Dat zien we in alle landen die slecht scoren in onze lijst, LHBTI’ers vetrekken massaal. Je ziet dat veel mensen uit de beweging wegtrekken, juist omdat ze gediscrimineerd worden, omdat er geen wettelijke erkenning is,’’ zegt Van

jaren veel vooruitgangen geboekt. ‘‘Het proces gaat moeilijker dan in onze buurlanden, maar we zijn op de goede weg, er is veel minder discriminatie. We werken hard aan de ‘gelijkheidswet’, adoptie en trouwen mag en veel politici hebben zich positief uitgesproken voor de LHBT-beweging,’’ zegt Carles Perea Rodríguez, president van activistengroep Som Com Som (Zoals We Zijn) in een Skypegesprek.

Volgens Perea zien steeds minder Andorraanse LHBTI’ers de noodzaak om naar Barcelona - de gay capital van Europa - te vertrekken.

Waarom zou je als Monegask moeite doen om een samenlevingscontract tussen twee mensen van hetzelfde geslacht op de politieke agenda te krijgen (Monaco is het enige West-Europese land waar dat niet is toegestaan), terwijl je – als je tweehonderd meter noordwaarts loopt – op Franse bodem kunt trouwen?

De grenzen zijn open, werken deed je waarschijnlijk toch al in Frankrijk, je kunt er prima met je partner trouwen en samenwonen kan op een minuut loopafstand van je ouderlijk huis in Monte Carlo – ik noem maar wat.

uber en airbn A

irbnb en Uber zijn twee relatief jonge bedrijven die actief zijn in respectievelijk de hotelsector en taxiwereld. Airbnb startte in 2008 en wordt inmiddels door mensen van over de hele wereld gebruikt in meer dan 180 landen.

Uber, opgericht in 2009, is inmiddels actief in meer dan 60 landen. Beiden winnen aan populariteit en zijn in korte tijd aanzienlijk in waarde gestegen. Wat schuilt er achter dit succes?

Allereerst is er natuurlijk de prijs. Zowel Uber als Airbnb zijn een stuk goedkoper dan de alternatieve, reguliere hotels en taxi’s. Vooral in populaire steden zoals onze eigen hoofdstad kost het al gauw een klein fortuin om een weekend in een hotel te verblijven, om over taxiritten maar te zwijgen. Daarnaast wordt het aanbod door de extra woonruimtes en taxi’s erg vergroot. Dit verlaagt door marktwerking de prijs (hoe groter het aanbod, hoe lager de prijs). Dit aanbod is bovendien makkelijk te vinden met behulp van apps.

Door de technologische vooruitgang van de afgelopen decennia wordt het steeds makkelijker om producenten en consumenten bij elkaar te brengen. Een taxirit is zo geregeld via de Uber-app en een leuke kamer kan makkelijk gevonden worden op de gebruiksvriendelijke website van Airbnb. Bovendien wordt informatie ook steeds transparanter gemaakt omdat de gebruikers de aanbieders kunnen

Steeds meer mensen doen het tegenwoordig: ze bieden hun woning te huur aan op Airbnb als ze op vakantie gaan of pakken een taxi via Uber. Deze twee start-ups lijken een goudmijn, maar er zijn ook een aantal kanttekeningen. Uber en Airbnb: de voor- en nadelen op een rij.

nb beoordelen. Een slechte taxichauffeur van Uber krijgt een lage score en wordt daardoor minder vaak gevraagd. Hierdoor lost het probleem van asymmetrische informatie zich vanzelf op: gebruikers hebben een beter beeld van degene bij wie ze in de auto stappen.

Het extra aanbod zorgt dus voor een prijsdaling. Maar is het niet zo dat er juist een enorm overschot is aan taxi’s in Amsterdam? En zitten hotels ook niet vaak met lege kamers? Dat klopt, maar dit draagt juist bij aan een hoge prijs. Een hotel met lege kamers heeft wel kosten en moet deze verdelen over een kleinere groep mensen. Onder deze kosten worden verschillende dingen verstaan, waaronder huur en onderhoud van het pand, loon van het personeel en vergunningen. Ook taxi’s moeten hun kosten dekken. Zij moeten namelijk voldoen aan bepaalde kwaliteitseisen van de auto’s, welke wettelijk zijn vastgesteld. De kamers en vervoermiddelen van Airbnb en Uber hoeven niet aan al deze eisen en extra kosten te voldoen, en kunnen dus een lagere prijs aanbieden. Het wordt hierdoor makkelijker om toe te treden op de taxi- en huizenmarkt. Iedereen met een auto en een huis kan deze in principe aanbieden zonder eerst allerlei procedures door te lopen.

Dit brengt gelijk het nadeel naar voren.

Een veelgenoemde oorzaak waarom taxi’s en hotels zo duur (kunnen) zijn, is omdat de overheid hen verschillende eisen oplegt. De belangrijkste reden hiervoor is het waarborgen van de veiligheid van de consument. Hotels moeten bijvoorbeeld brandveilig zijn en taxichauffeurs moeten regelmatig hun auto’s laten controleren op eventuele mankementen. Bij Airbnb en Uber kunnen de aanbieders de kwaliteit zelf bepalen en dit zullen ze ook blijven doen zolang er vraag naar is. Er zijn namelijk genoeg mensen die het niet kan schelen dat de woonruimte op hun vakantiebestemming niet volledig voldoet aan de brandveiligheidsvoorschriften als ze daarmee honderd euro kunnen besparen. Of dat ze niet in een Mercedes naar het hotel worden gereden na een avond uit, maar in een bescheiden Suzuki.

Normaal gesproken zorgt een bepaalde toezichthouder (zoals de overheid) ervoor dat de kwaliteit wordt gewaarborgd, maar het hele punt van Airbnb en Uber is juist dat de prijzen zo laag mogelijk gehouden moeten worden door zo veel mogelijk administratieve rompslomp te vermijden. Dit zorgt voor veel ophef onder de taxichauffeurs. Zij zien hun inkomsten dalen, omdat ze worden weggeconcurreerd terwijl zij wel aan alle eisen moeten voldoen.

Een bijkomend effect van de diensten van Airbnb is dat huizenprijzen stijgen.

Het loont namelijk meer om een huis te hebben, omdat je deze kunt verhuren als je op vakantie gaat. Hierdoor stijgt de waarde van het hebben van een huis, en daarmee dus ook de prijs. Ook wordt hiermee de kloof tussen huizenbezitters en huurders groter. Ten slotte kan Airbnb ook bepaalde nadelige externe effecten hebben. Een nette buurt kan bijvoorbeeld last krijgen van dronken toeristen als er goedkope vakantieruimtes worden aangeboden.

Op het eerste gezicht lijkt het dus alsof Uber en Airbnb een gouden oplossing hebben gevonden voor de imperfecte taxi- en hotelmarkten. Consumenten hebben eindelijk het gevoel dat ze iets kunnen doen tegen de hoge prijzen. Door reviews ontstaat er meer transparantie en verdwijnen overbodig dure aanbieders van de markt. De lage prijzen zijn houdbaar door het grote aanbod dat makkelijk kan toe- en uittreden op de markten. Hier zit echter ook een keerzijde aan, die vaak wordt vergeten. Uber en Airbnb kunnen lage prijzen vragen omdat ze ook niet hoeven te voldoen aan allerlei vereisten zoals brandveiligheid. Hierdoor gaat de algehele kwaliteit achteruit. Ook kan er sprake zijn van nadelige maatschappelijke gevolgen zoals stijgende huizenprijzen en geluidsoverlast. Uber en Airbnb zijn dus vooral een uitlaatklep voor frustratie van consumenten, maar een langetermijnoplossing bieden ze niet.

ses events calendar 23 June - End of the year Party with Kleio and Helios End of the year Party with Kleio and Helios This party will be perfect for everyone who feels the need for some romantic beach pictures, because the theme will be LIFE’S A BEACH! Study associations SES, Kleio (History & Art History) and Helios (Dutch Language & Culture and Language & Communication Studies) will be hosting this party together, to make sure we’ll end the year in the best way possible. Be prepared for the hottest party of the year, with lots of summer hits, flower prints and Enrique Iglesias. The party will take place in Akhnaton the 23rd of June and will start at 10 PM.

24 June - fgw football tournament The biggest football event of the summer is coming again! On Friday, June 24 different studies of the Faculty of Humanities will compete against each other in the football tournament of Humanities. The winner will go home with the challenge cup, the losers have the authentic orange experience. Every year it has been a grandiose spectacle. You can sign up via SES.

26-28 June - HITCHHIKE COMPETITION The annual hitchhike competition is coming up! We will hitchhike in pairs from Amsterdam to a secret location, while performing fun tasks. The location will be revealed on the day we leave.

We will hitchhike for one day, and afterwards we will spend a weekend in city we hitchhiked to.

You don’t want to miss this.

30 June - FINAL BORREL! After we come back from our hitchhike weekend, we organise one last drink to toast the year.

30 August - NEXT YEAR’s FIRST BORREL IN INTREEWEEK During the Intreeweek, after preciously one month, there will be Borrel again. We hope to see you then and to hear about all your stories.
