DISHES YOU NEED TO TASTE WHEN VISITING FINLAND

From Graavilohi to Korvapuusti Marinated reindeer might be more suitable for people with a strong stomach – other types of preparation stewed and dried can be found in mainstream Finnish cuisine.

One example of this is Poronkaristys – sauteed reindeer – it is served with sugared lingonberries, mashed potatoes and cucumber pickles. The diverse cuisine features fresh ingredients such as mushrooms, berries and other herbs which can be found in the forests of Finnland. Karjalanpiirakka is a very popular pastry from the region of Karelia, which you can get at every corner if you feel the need for a quick breakfast or snack on the go – it is a rye or wheat crust which is traditionally filled with barley and tarlkkuna, later with potato and buckweed and today also with rice and millet. It is all topped with butter often mixed with choppedup boiled egg. Speaking of Rye – Finland has had a strong bread culture which goes back thousands of years. Rye bread is one of the local staple food and is often consumed cut into thin pieces and tried with butter.

The dish is so popular that there is an annual kalakukko baking constest in Kuopio, the capital city of the Northern Savonia region. If you have ever been to IKEA you know the famous köttbullar – the Finns have their own version of it – the Lihapullat. This dish contains less spices and herbs than the Swedish counterpart. Traditionally the meatballs are served with mashed potatoes, gravy, lingonberry jam and cucumber pickles.

As a dessert you could eat Korvapuusti which is the Finnish equivalent of a cinnamon roll or Leipajuusto which is often consumed with coffee and jam – even though the name “bread cheese” would suggest otherwise. It is produced from the rich milk of a cow that has recently calved. In the summer months Finnish forests are filled with bilberries, the Nordic cousin of the blueberry.

Berries and pie go together around the globe – it is not different in Finnland. The Mustikkapiirakka is a pie filled with yogurt and berries, served with a glas of cold fresh milk.

EUROSPINE DIPLOMA IN INTERPROFESSIONAL SPINE CARE

EDISC is EPIC! Evidence-based Patient-centred Interprofessional Collaborative

EDISC (EUROSPINE Diploma in Interprofessional spine care), the non-surgical management of spinal disorders is rapidly evolving and moving away from an “intervention-centric” approach to a “patient-centred” approach. With EDISC, EUROSPINE is taking the global lead to change the

nature of the management of spinal conditions.

Finalised last year, this education programme will be evidence-based, patient-centred, interprofessional, and collaborative (EPIC). EUROSPINE is the first spine society in Europe and even beyond to introduce such an educational programme.

Four of the overall seven EDISC modules were introduced during the 2019 EduWeek, with participation from a wide range of professionals from various backgrounds, including surgeons,

physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopath and other health care practitioners involved in the treatment of spine disorders. In order to obtain the EUROSPINE Diploma in Interprofessional Spine Care, practitioners must complete all 7 EDISC modules. Next opportunity will be at EduWeek 2020 taking place from 29 June to 3 July 2020.

FINNISH EDUCATION SYSTEM

How Finland‘s Education System works Finland is known for many things – one of the things it is admired for is its education system.

The Finnish school system is very different to traditional western school systems. Learning and studying should be a joy not an unwanted chore for children. An equal education system has helped Finland progress from austere conditions to global cutting edge.

Compared to many other systems Finnish children start quite late at the age of 7. Also, the hours are a lot adapted a lot more towards shorter hours and a later start. Students usually start between 9:00 - 9:45 AM and school ends by 2:00 - 2:45 PM. Each period is longer, but there are also longer breaks between classes. For their first six years of school they are not measured at all and even after that they rarely take exam or even do homework until they are well into their teenage years. There is only one standardized test in Finland that is taken when children are 16. Also, after high school Finland has top-performing students. After 93% of Finns graduate from high school, 66% move on to tertiary education, which is the highest percentage in Europe. All stages of education are completely free as it is in many countries in Europe which helps with student numbers and social permeability. A strong focus is also put on the education of teachers. All teachers need to have a master’s degree in their respective field.

The profession is extremely selective, but also better paid than in most countries with fewer hours of work.

EUROSPINE AMBASSADOR AYMAN ASSI NOMINATED PRESIDENT-ELECT OF ESMAC

Bringing movement analysis to EUROSPINE Ayman Assi from Beirut, Lebanon, eUROSpine member and Ambassador, has been nominated President-Elect of ESMAC (the European Society for Movement analysis in adults and Children).

Keynote Lecture: “Syringomyelia” Friday, 18 October 08:30–10:00 Adult Deformity, Growing Spine Keynote lecturer: andrew Brodbelt, MD PhD Topic: Syringomyelia Syringomyelia is characterised by fluid filled cavities forming in the spinal cord. Untreated, syrinxes can cause progressive neurological deterioration and deformity. Theories abound

regarding the pathophysiology, but none fully explain this enigmatic condition. Treatment of the syrinx should be directed at the cause, which can sometimes be challenging to identify. There are many controversies in this area, but a logical approach to the assessment and management of these patients is possible.

Short bio Andrew Brodbelt is a consultant neurosurgeon at the Walton Centre in Liverpool, England, and an honorary clinical senior lecturer at The University of Liverpool.

His PhD entitled ‘Investigations in post traumatic syringomyelia’ from The University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, led to a life long fascination in this condition. His main interests include trying to understanding the underlying pathophysiology, fluid dynamics, and biomechanics, and looking at ways to improve outcomes for patients.

Andrew lives near the beach with his wife and three children, and enjoys active mountainous activities with his family.

Great Support for Spine Care

The second EUROSPINE Foundation (ESF) Charity Run broke records in registration numbers, as well as donations. The runners and walkers resisted cold temperatures and rain in the early morning hours to support spinal education and research. The winner of the race was Mr. Kristian Soegaard, Denmark, with an excellent time of 21 minutes and 04 seconds, closely

followed by Mr. Christoph Siepe, Germany.

The real winner of this great event is the good cause: The EUROSPINE Foundation will support the advancement of knowledge of spinal disorders, the improvement of the standard of care and the recovery and well-being of patients with back and neck problems.

THE GREATER HELSINKI REGION HAS MUCH MORE TO OFFER

Awesome Nature and Quiet Medieval Witnesses Art and Forest Bathing – Hyvinkää brings together the best of both Worlds

The small city located only 45 minutes from the capital will woo you with nature trails, glacial ridges and rich cultural history.

The small town of Hyvinkää is located approximately 50 kilometres north of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The highways and rail connections make it one of the suburban commuter centers of Greater Helsinki. Hyvinkää, the home of Finnish technology moguls Konecranes and KONE elevators, also features The Finnish Railway Museum.

Hyvinkää offers some of the most incredible nature trails Finland has to offer. The area around Sveitsi has been since the 19th century known as a place for recreation and restoration.
