WORLD SPINE DAY

EUROSPINE AND EUSSAB Equivalence and a European certificate in spine surgery On 10 September 2016 the participants from 14 countries met for the education workshop ”EUROSPINE and EuSSAB“ in order to discuss issues of common interest in aligning the educational curriculum and consequently the spine surgeons diploma throughout Europe. The main goal was to work towards a common understanding of a core curriculum across Europe. Concretely, the workshop intended to achieve the following objectives: 1. Discuss pertinent spine surgery educational issues in respective countries

profession include different education levels, escalating staff costs, changing legal frameworks and the change of the health sector in general.

EUROSPINE introduces two organisations that it officially endorses to raise awareness on spine related issues as well as helping actively where there is need.

All countries represented agreed that the diploma equivalence of the European Spine Course Diploma is a way forward in addressing these challenges through education and training. Represented societies expressed that their organisations will open the discussion to work towards the development of parallel programmes for training in spine surgery. This would mean that their programmes will have shared learning outcomes within the EUROSPINE’s European Spine Course Diploma.

Everyone agreed that a European certificate is the goal and will be one of the steps towards a recognized specialty in spine surgery.

World Spine Care – an innovative organisation that works to provide high-level musculoskeletal care to people with limited access to health care in developing countries. In many of these countries if people can’t work, even due to medical reasons, they

are left destitute and unable to provide for themselves or their families. Let’s help them stay strong, healthy, and able to work. EUROSPINE further more supports the call of The Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health‘s on health policy makers at national and regional levels and the WHO for explicit plans to deal with the large and growing burden of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries on individuals and society. THE ULTIMATE BRIDGE TO FUSION

TI-LIFE TECHNOLOGY Spineart developed a specific algorithm to enhance the classic additive manufacturing process resulting in a unique bone-like matrix: Ti-LifeT ECHNOLOGY. Ti-Life TECHNOLOGY achieves a geometry that would not be possible through classic manufacturing processes. The result is a Titanium porous structure similar to natural trabecular bone. MATERIAL Over the last decade, Titanium biocompatibility has been demonstrated and accepted by the scientific community. Unlike polymer materials (PEEK), the Titanium porous structure and roughness facilitate bone tissue ingrowth1-2-3. ARCHITECTURE Additive manufacturing produces highly cohesive device which differentiates the Ti-Life TECHNOLOGY from non-porous surface treatments and coating techniques4. The micro-porous scaffold mimics the cancellous bone structure and features interconnected pores (diameter between 0.6 and 0.7mm), with an average of 70-75% overall porosity, that enables cell colonization6. As a comparison, natural bone features around 60% porosity with pore diameter ranging from 0.3 and 1.5mm5-6-7. PROPERTIES Ti-Life TECHNOLOGY contributes to a unique osteoconductive environment designed to promote bone in-growth. Ti-Life TECHNOLOGY allows to design devices featuring an overall reduced density to optimize the medical imaging performances and post-operative evaluations. Ti-Life TECHNOLOGY features a rough surface for primary stability within the endplates. 1. In Vivo performance of selective electron beam-melted Ti-&Al-4V structures - Ponader, S et al., 2010 2. Evaluation of biological properties of electron beam melted Ti6al4V implant with biomimetic coating in vitro and in vivo. - Li, X et al., 2012 3. Porous titanium-6 aluminium-4 vandium cage has better osseointegration and less micromotion than a poly-ether-ether-ketone cage in sheep vertebral fusion. - Yang, J. et al., 2014 4. Does impaction of titanium-coated interbody fusion cages into the disc space cause wear debris or delamination? - Annette Kienle, MDa,*, Nicolas Graf, Dipl-Ing (FH)a, Hans-Joachim Wilke, PhDb 5. PATIENT DAY On Tuesday, 4 October 2016, EUROSPINE’s public information event – the Patient Day 2016 – took place before the grand opening of this year’s annual conference. The Patient Day was organised in close cooperation with the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery of the Charité and the Department of Neurosurgery of the Charité. Renowned spine specialists from Germany presented treatment methods, gave expert advice and answered the countless questions of a very interested audience. There were two main focuses during these 14 presentations: On the one hand, the degenerative changes and tumours of the spine were discussed – on the other hand, injuries of the spine – the bent back, was debated extensively. Overall the patient day was well perceived by the citizens of Berlin and the attendees seemed to enjoy an excellent information programme.

WELCOME FROM THE INCOMING PRESIDENT Dear EUROSPINE Members, Colleagues and Guests, It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you to the EUROSPINE Annual Meeting, here in the beautiful and vibrant city of Berlin. EUROSPINE is now one of the largest spine societies in Europe, having grown from 452 to over 1000 members since 2010. What’s more, in the past two years, 25 national European societies have joined EUROSPINE through the European Spine Societies Advisory Board (EuSSAB), further increasing our membership base by approximately 6850 associate members. Thank you to Christoph Siepe and the Membership Committee. This success is testament to our strength as a Society on an international level, with an important impact on clinical care, education, research, communication and knowledge transfer. It is also a testimony to all working EUROSPINE members who dedicate numerous hours to make the Society a success.

ESF: RAISING FUNDS FOR SPINE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION 2016 has been a year of transition for the EUROSPINE Foundation (ESF). Having transferred all operational educational activities back under the auspices of the Society, the Foundation will once again be focussing on its original mandate and primary goal: raising funds for spinal research and education in Europe and beyond.

Everard Munting Chair EUROSPINE Foundation 2016 NEW ROLE AS FUNDRAISER There is a desperate need to improve the outcome, rehabilitation and recovery for spinal patients. There are many

EUROSPINE WAY FORWARD STRATEGY – ON TRACK FOR THE FUTURE The EUROSPINE Annual Meeting attracts several thousand participants from more than 80 countries who want to learn about improving spine care for patients through the latest advances in research and clinical findings and network with the best and the brightest in spine care. Here in Berlin we have created a forum where you can mingle with colleagues, friends, clinicians and researchers from different fields. Learn about: • The European Spine Course Diploma (ESCD) education programme • Our advanced Spine Course Diploma for lifelong learning (launched in 2015/2016) • Applying for a EUROSPINE Task Force Research (TFR) Grant (deadline January 1, 2017) • Applying for a EUROSPINE fellowship to improve your clinical or research skills • Spine Tango: a Europe-wide voluntary Spine Registry • And so much more! Talk to your colleagues, make new friends and form new networks. Talk to the Executive Committee members and committee deserving projects in the world of spine today, particularly in education and research, however obtaining the financial resources necessary to ensure best-practice spine care in Europe and further afield is becoming increasingly difficult. As MedTech budgets become tighter and more monies are needed, fundraising drives will provide an important source of funding. To answer that need, the EUROSPINE Foundation will continue the role of a non-profit, charitable organisation dedicated to the advancement of our knowledge of spinal disorders, improving the standard of care, and the recovery and well-being of patients with back and neck problems. ESF will support the development of new treatments, evaluation of existing ones and the education of care providers at the highest level. The Foundation plans to raise funds from: • Patients and families • Companies and organisations • Philanthropists We will also be sponsoring a variety of charity events to promote spine health, such as walks, running events, swimming,

members of your interest – this is the opportunity to do so! Above all, enjoy the presentations, posters, abstracts, and debates on controversial issues. The agenda is set by the EUROSPINE Programme Committee based on surveys and direct membership feedback and careful screening of abstracts. Visit the exhibition for a first-hand experience with stateof-the-art tools and the latest technological advancement. We are shaping the EUROSPINE Society and meetings together with you – our members – our Society’s strongest asset. A warm ‘Thank you’ to our local Hosts Hans-Joachim Wilke, Peter Vajkoczy and Michael Putzier. As your incoming president, my strongest wish is to continue the excellent work of my predecessors Michael Ogon, Haluk Berk and Phil Sell and so many more. I am committed to continuing their work of growth, improvement, scientific rigour – and above all – receiving our members’ requests, suggestions and novel ideas. During my very enjoyable Vice Presidency, we decided to move forward with a European Diploma for non-surgeons. We will be working with a multidisciplinary taskforce to expand a model cycling etc. ADVOCACY The EUROSPINE Foundation is committed to fostering excellence in spine care in Europe and other parts of the world through education, research and advocacy. It is our goal to: • Support research and education-related spine projects across Europe • Act as a think tank to come up with bright ideas on how to improve spine treatments for the benefit of patients • Support the establishment of infrastructure in 3rd world countries • Furnish education and training for care providers from less-favoured areas of the world, with the ultimate goal of giving the population of these countries access to premium, evidence-based spine care. SPONSORSHIP ESF plans to sponsor the education of care givers, research, audit, registries and patient support and information. Among others, we’ll provide funding to the education and research programmes of EUROSPINE, the Spine Society

from the German Spine Society to Europe. We have reviewed and assessed the EUROSPINE Spring Specialty Meetings, which are smaller and more specialised. We will continue to hold Spring Specialty Meetings in response to high demand from members and excellent evaluations. We are networking with industry to increase awareness of our Society’s excellence and growth and collaborating with our counterparts to garner support and ensure that we meet new regulations in the industry environment. We’re aware that the future holds certain financial challenges, as belts are tightened and funding becomes scarcer. We will address these issues with careful budgeting, prioritisation of activities and expenditures. To that end, we’ll ensure that we function efficiently as an organisation and explore creative ideas for new sources of funding. We are also working closely with the new Chair, Everard Munting, and Board of the EUROSPINE Foundation to improve fundraising for the Society and support Education and Research – our most valuable activities.

Berlin’s eventful history from the Nazi regime to the Berlin Wall has impressed itself upon the soul of the city and, simultaneously, forms part of its appeal. Numerous memorials in the city remind one of these moving events.

Strasse is a place of remembrance of the Berlin Wall (1961-1989) and its victims. Between the districts of Wedding and Mitte, an example of a section of the Berlin Wall has been rebuilt on the former border strip.

With more than one million visitors per year, the “Topography of Terror” documentation centre is one of the most frequently visited places of remembrance and museums in the city. From 1933 to 1945, the most important centres of national-socialist terror were located on this site: the headquarters of the Secret State Police with own “in-house prison”, the SS High Command and the Security Service of the SS and, during the Second World War, the Reich Security Main Office.

The memorial also includes the Berlin Wall Documentation Centre and the Chapel of Reconciliation. The site which is 1.4 km long is visited annually by nearly a million people. The German Resistance Memorial Centre, the former Stasi prison at Hohenschönhausen or the Tränenpalast, at the former border crossing between East and West Berlin, show the story of a city that was once divided.
