YOUNG FILM-MAKERS TO LOOK OUT FOR FUTURE FRAMES: The initiative for young directors by EFP and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival enters its second year Spot on for the next generation of young film-makers to make an impression on the international film community. Ten film students and graduates have been selected for this year’s edition of European Film Promotion’s (EFP) FUTURE FRAMES programme at the 51th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) in the Czech Republic (July 1-9, 2016). In close cooperation with the festival, EFP will introduce the young directors and their films – 4 international premieres and 6 Czech premieres – to the public, film industry and press during the two-day event running from July 4 – 5, which will be rounded off by a master class. The EFP initiative is supported by the Creative Europe – Media Programme of the European Union and the respective EFP member organisations. The FUTURE FRAMES participants have been nominated by the EFP member organisations according to artistic quality, content and international appeal. KVIFF made the final selection out of the 26 entries. And the new line-up has already achieved a lot: from Switzerland's Julia Furer whose documentary “Julian“ received various awards, including three for Best Documentary at film festivals in London and the US, to Romania's Roxana Stroe whose film “A Night at Tokoriki“ was awarded the Special Prize for Best Short Film at this year’s Berlinale Generation plus14 section. Joining the winners is Davit Pirtskhalava from Georgia. His directing debut “Father” was awarded the prestigious Golden Leopard of Tomorrow for Best International Short Film at the Locarno Film Festival in 2015. These newcomers are following last year’s very successful group of young filmmakers whose work received special attention thanks to FUTURE FRAMES’ extensive media coverage and contacts made during the festival. PRVNÍ PODÁNÍ PODRUHÉ – European Film Promotion a MFF Karlovy Vary opět představí nadějné mladé filmové režiséry Nová generace mladých filmařů dostane příležitost oslnit mezinárodní filmový svět. Deset studentů a absolventů filmových škol bylo evropskou organizací European Film Promotion (EFP) vybráno do druhého ročníku programu První podání, který je součástí 51. MFF Karlovy Vary (1. – 9. 7. 2016). V těsné spolupráci s festivalem představí EFP divákům, odborné veřejnosti a novinářům mladé režiséry a jejich filmy – během dvou festivalových dnů 4. a 5. července je na programu 10 premiér (4 mezinárodní a 6 českých), zakončených setkáním studentů s předními filmovými profesionály. Iniciativa EFP je podporována programem EU Kreativní Evropa – Média a příslušnými členy EFP. Účastníci Prvního podání byli nominováni členskými organizacemi EFP na základě umělecké kvality, obsahu a mezinárodního přesahu jejich filmů. MFF KV vybral finalisty z 26 přihlášených. Noví reprezentanti mají už v této chvíli na kontě řadu úspěchů: Švýcarka Julia Furer obdržela za dokument Julian několik ocenění, včetně ceny za Nejlepší dokument na festivalech v Londýně a Spojených státech. Rumunka Roxana Stroe byla oceněna za svůj film Noc v Tokoriki speciální cenou za Nejlepší krátký film na letošním Berlinále v sekci Generation 14plus. K vítězům patří i Davit Pirtskhalava z Gruzie, jeho režijní debut Otec byl oceněn prestižním Zlatým leopardem zítřka za Nejlepší mezinárodní krátký film na Filmovém festivalu v Locarnu 2015. Tito nováčci následují velmi úspěšnou skupinu loňských účastníků, jejichž filmová díla vzbudila zvláštní pozornost díky rozsáhlé medializaci Prvního podání a kontaktům navázaným během festivalu. Martin Schweighofer, prezident EFP a výkonný ředitel AFC Austrian Films, popisuje sekci slovy: „První podání, které je zaštitováno EFP, je především o zachycení záblesku budoucnosti evropského filmového průmyslu. Loňský výběr filmů byl výjimečný, snímky vzbudily rozruch na mnoha mezinárodních festivalech, vyhrála spoustu ocenění a jeden dokonce dosáhl i na nominaci na Oscara. Druhý ročník Prvního podání tedy rozhodně patří mezi naše nejzajímavější aktivity a já doufám, že z něj budete nadšeni!” MFF Karlovy Vary, patřící mezi nejstarší filmové festivaly kategorie A s pověstí neúnavného podporovatele mladé kinematografie, je pro EFP ideálním místem, kde mohou mladí filmoví profesionálové navázat kontakty na mezinárodní úrovni. June 7, 2016 ---------------------- NEWS EMBARGO 8 am CET ----------------------------- Oscar‐nominated director Felix van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”) to share his experience with FUTURE FRAMES participants European Film Promotion and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival are thrilled to announce that the acclaimed Belgian director Felix van Groeningen – fresh from receiving the Directing Award: World Cinema Dramatic for his new feature film “Belgica”at the Sundance Film Festival – has agreed to be this year’s mentor for the young filmmakers taking part in FUTURE FRAMES at the KVIFF from June 4 – 5. The director will share his wide‐ranging experience in film‐making – including a masterclass on occasion of the KVIFF premiere of “Belgica”. His exceptional commitment is part of an intensive programme introducing the emerging professionals to the media and the film industry and presenting their work to the festival audience. The EFP initiative is supported by the Creative Europe – Media Programme of the European Union and the respective EFP member organisations. About the director: Born in 1977, Felix van Groeningen studied Visual Arts at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schöne Kunsten (KASK) in Ghent, Belgium. Following his master‘s degree in 2000 he started working for the stage as well as a director and an actor. His passion for the cinema made him return to directing films, and he has realized five feature films with his producer Dirk Impens since 2007. His second feature “The Misfortunates“ (2009) was selected for the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, but it was the following film, “The Broken Circle Breakdown“ (2012), which brought him international recognition. The musical drama received an Oscar Nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, among many other awards, and was released worldwide. His latest film, „Belgica“ (2016), premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Na Oscara nominovaný režisér Felix van Groeningen bude sdílet své zkušenosti s účastníky Prvního podání European Film Promotion a MFF Karlovy Vary s radostí oznamují, že uznávaný belgický režisér Felix van Groeningen se stane letošním mentorem mladých filmařů v sekci První podání – na MFF KV od 4. do 5. července. Felix van Groeningen, který si z letošního festivalu Sundance odvezl cenu za režii za svůj nový film Belgica, se podělí o své obsáhlé zkušenosti s přípravou a realizací filmů. Počítá se nejen s jeho aktivní účastí v sekci První podání, ale na programu je také setkání a diskuse se studenty a filmovými profesionály při příležitosti české premiéry filmu Belgica na MFF KV. Výjimečně intenzivní osobní zapojení věhlasného režiséra je součástí speciálního projektu, představujícího začínající filmaře médiím a zástupcům filmového průmyslu a prezentujícího jejich práci festivalovému publiku. Iniciativa EFP je podporována programem EU Kreativní Evropa – Média a příslušnými členy EFP. O režisérovi: Felix van Groeningen (1977) vystudoval obor vizuální umění na Královské akademii múzických umění (KASK) v belgickém Gentu. Po zisku magisterského titulu v roce 2000 začal pracovat také jako divadelní režisér a herec. Vášeň pro kinematografii ho přivedla zpět k filmové režii, od roku 2007 natočil pět celovečerních filmů s producentem Dirkem Impensem. Jeho druhý celovečerní film Psanci osudu (2009) byl vybrán do nezávislé sekce Patnáctka režisérů na festivalu v Cannes. Dalším filmem, Broken Circle Breakdown (2012), dosáhl světového uznání. Hudební drama se promítalo po celém světě a získalo řadu mezinárodních ocenění, včetně nominace na Oscara za nejlepší zahraniční film. Nejnovější snímek Felixe van Groeningena Belgica (2016) měl úspěšnou premiéru na festivalu Sundance, kde vyhrál i cenu za režii. Partnery sekce První podání 2016 jsou Sundance Channel a Nespresso. On the invitation of European Film Promotion (EFP) and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF), ten European film students and graduates present their films in the framework of the programme FUTURE FRAMES - Ten New Filmmakers To Follow during three festival days, July 3 - 5. FUTURES FRAMES is financially backed by the Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme of the European Union and the respective EFP member organisations. Acclaimed Belgian director Felix van Groeningen will arrive in Karlovy Vary July 4th to act as mentor for the young filmmakers. INSPIRING DAYS AT THE 51st KARLOVY VARY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FUTURE FRAMES 2016 impresses audiences and filmmakers alike The second edition of FUTURE FRAMES at the 51 Karlovy Vary International Festival 2016 has successfully wrapped. All soldout screenings of the FUTURE FRAMES films were followed by very lively Q&A’s with the fantastic KVIFF audience. Highlights of the busy programme for the young filmmakers were a masterclass by Oscarnominated director Felix van Groeningen and a very informative lecture by Katriel Schory, Executive Director of the Israel Film Fund. The EFP initiative – a close and very fruitful cooperation with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival – is supported by the Creative Europe – Media Programme of the European Union and the respective EFP member organisations. In his masterclass Felix van Groeningen contributed invaluable input on the various aspects of filmmaking, sharing very openly his rich experience and urging the young filmmakers to start as quickly as possible with their first feature film projects in order to keep up the energy. As the mentor of the emerging filmmakers, he took great interest in their work, went to all the screenings and was impressed by the quality and craftsmanship of the films. Together, they also attended the Czech premiere of Felix van Groeningen’s latest film “Belgica” which screened at KVIFF’s “East of the West” Competition and had additional time to share impressions afterwards. The inspiring day was rounded off by a press event at the FUTURE FRAMES’ partner NESPRESSO Lounge for all participants, who afterwards rocked the “Belgica”Party together with Felix van Groeningen until the early hours .

PRESS RELEASE In order to provide even more insight into the international film business and the festival circuit, the emerging directors met with various festival representatives and enjoyed a lecture by Katriel Schory – one of the most respected figures in the international film industry – who spoke in a very lively and inspirational way about the very important and complex relationship between director and producer and how to select the right team for each film project. Christian De Schutter , General Manager of Flanders Image, the EFP member who suggested Felix van Groeningen for the role of mentor, is especially happy with this year’s edition of FUTURE FRAMES: “By promoting exceptional European directing talents at the start of their professional career, FUTURE FRAMES is a great addition to the EFP portfolio. Inspirativní dny na 51. MFF Karlovy Vary – První podání 2016 oslnilo diváky i filmaře Druhý ročník sekce První podání na 51. Mezinárodním filmovém festival Karlovy Vary (MFF KV) je úspěšně zakončen. Všechny vyprodané projekce filmů z této sekce byly provázeny velmi živými diskuzemi s nadšeným publikem. Mezi vrcholné okamžiky na festivalu byla pro mladé filmaře diskuze s jejich mentorem a režisérem Felixem van Groeningenem nominovaným na Oscara a neméně poučná lekce s Katrielem Schorym, producentem a výkonným ředitelem Izraelského filmového fondu. Iniciativa European Film Promotion (EFP) – v úzké a plodné spolupráci s MFF KV – je podporována programem EU Kreativní Evropa – Média a příslušnými členy. Felix van Groeningen přispěl do diskuze se začínajícími filmaři vstupem o různých aspektech výroby filmů, velmi otevřeně sdílel své bohaté zkušenosti a naléhal na mladé tvůrce, aby co nejdříve začali s přípravou svého prvního celovečerního filmu, aby využili té energie. Jako mentor začínajících filmařů projevil veliký zájem o jejich tvorbu, navštívil všechny projekce a byl ohromen kvalitou a řemeslnou dokonalostí filmů. Společně také navštívili českou premiéru jeho posledního filmu Belgica, která byla promítána v rámci soutěžní sekce Na Východ od Západu a poté měli možnost sdílet své dojmy. Inspirující dny byly zakončeny setkáním všech účastníků Prvního podání s novináři v prostoru partnerského Nespresso Lounge a nakonec si až do pozdních hodin užili i s Felixem van Groeningenem večírek k filmu Belgica. Pro ještě lepší vhled do mezinárodního filmového průmyslu a festivalového koloběhu se začínající režiséři potkali s několika zástupci festivalu a užili si lekci Katriela Schoryho – jedné z nejrespektovanějších postav mezinárodního filmového průmyslu – který mluvil velmi živě a inspirativně o důležitém a celistvém vztahu mezi režisérem a producentem a jak si vybrat správný tým pro svůj filmový projekt. Christian De Schutter, generální manažer společnosti Flanders Image, člena EFP, který navrhl do role mentora Felixe van Groeningena, je s letošní sekcí Prvního podání obzvlášť spokojený: “Podpora výjimečných evropských režisérských talentů na začátku jejich profesionální kariéry je skvělý příspěvek do portfolia EFP. Flanders Image má velkou radost, že může prezentovat svého absolventa jako
zástupce Belgie v zatím obou ročnících Prvního podání a mimojiné jsme ohromeni tím, jak tento program poskytl mladým filmařům ještě více profesionálního obsahu, speciální dík za to patří Felixovi van Groeningenovi a Katrielu Schorymu. Projekce filmů byly skvělou ukázkou, jak dychtiví a otevření jsou karlovarští diváci při objevování nových filmařských hlasů z celé Evropy. Je to inspirativní zkušenost jak pro festivalové publikum (mezi nímž je mnoho filmových studentů), tak pro vybrané filmaře, z nichž mnozí poznali, že jejich práce je poprvé po absolvování respektovaných filmových škol brána vážně.” Při zpětném pohledu na druhý ročník Prvního podání uvádí Anna Purkrábková, programová koordinátorka MFF KV toto: “Druhé vydání Prvního podání přivedlo do Karlových Varů dalších deset výjimečně talentovaných mladých filmařů. Měli možnost sdílet zkušenosti nejen se zavedenými profesionály, ale také sami mezi sebou a prozkoumat “co to znamená být evropský filmový tvůrce na začátku kariéry”. Dělá nám radost vidět rostoucí zájem médií a profesionálů z filmového průmyslu o program Prvního podání a těšíme se na to, jak budeme hostit další ročník tohoto vynikajícího projektu .” Jedna z účastnic Prvního podání, Maria Luz Olivares Capelle, která studovala u Michaela Hanekeho na Vídeňské filmové akademii a představila svůj cenami ověnčený absolventský snímek “Les ozvěn”, uzavírá celou zkušenost takto: ”První podání představovalo tři dny plné obohacující a příjemné komunikace s velmi rozdílnými mladými režiséry, kteří prochází podobnou fází vývoje se svými filmy. Debata s Felixem van Groeningenem a Katrielem Schorym byla také velice zajímavá. Oba dva mají tolik zkušeností, mluvili s námi velice upřímně a otevřeně o příznivých i nepříznivých okolnostech při vzniku filmů.
