So much more happening CWA Hall Eumundi CWA Eumundi now has 26 members, the largest membership for many years.

Members are busy making items for the Eumundi State School Chaplaincy program. Colourful cushions and drawstring bags are being sewn by members Annette Craigie and Glenda Marks. Annette has been building up stock for their stall at the Wednesday Markets. ‘Busy Chicks’ is extending its session an hour on the fourth Tuesday of each month: now starting at 6pm.

The CWA branch has donated $2000 to the Clem Jones Research Centre for Research into Aging Dementia. Dementia has touched the families of many of our members and is the focus of health awareness in QCWA during 2020.

SUNDAY 11TH OCTOBER October is Mental Health Month, and Eumundi Rotary invites you to help Australian Rotary Health to “Lift the Lid on Mental Illness” by attending a fundraiser fun walk on Sunday 11th October.

Meet at the bottom markets car park at 10am. The walk will be led by experienced walkers, is suitable for all ages and abilities. A $10 donation for each family will be invited to support research to help one in five Australians who are affected by depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.

This community Hat Day event will conclude with a BBQ for $5 a family at the Sunken Garden, Pacey Street at the completion of the walk, 11.30am approx.

New in town Afi Valizadeh has been a proud Australian for over 40 years. She was born in Teheran, Iran, and moved to California with her parents at age 15. In 1980 Afi decided to move her young family to Queensland to unite with her sister’s family in Toowoomba. She started a career in marketing that led to her becoming a financial planner. Her plan to someday live in the Sunshine Coast was born then.

Lew Soffer was born in Chicago and moved to California at 16 years old. He graduated from Stanford University, and earned graduate law and business degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. In 2020, he retired after practising for 40 years as a litigator barrister in real estate law. Lew’s twin sons, age 33, live in San Francisco. COVID19 pushed forward the couple’s retirement plan.

New face at Eumundi Aquatic Centre There is a new face in the gym at Eumundi Aquatic Centre: Isabel King, a sports and exercise scientist from Austria has joined the team.

Isabel recently relocated to Australia with her husband Dave and two little girls, aged two and four years. They have now made Woombye their home - giving their young family the country lifestyle they love.

Well-qualified, with a Bachelor in Sports and Human Movement Science, Master in Engineering (Digital Healthcare) and yoga teaching, Isabel will lead the circuit classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. She hopes to help class members to improve and maintain their overall health and fitness.

Afi and Lew flew to Brisbane, and came out of quarantine on 12 May and purchased a home in Sunrise Rd. Afi and Lew are grateful to find themselves living in paradise, and appreciate the warm welcome they have received from their neighbours.

Visitors to Eumundi Travelling around Australia in a bus with five children, aged from 18 months to 13 years, sounds to many like a nightmare. But for the delightful Shaw family, well, they would not have it any other way.

Recent visitors to the Eumundi Showgrounds, in their big, blue bus, Tory and Melissa and their children Diesel, Braxton, Maci, Olive and Dawson have been on the road for nearly 4 years. Home school in the morning, then exploring the local area in the afternoon, is just how they like it.

Originally from Ballina, they are now experiencing

Queensland while borders are closed. “We tried living in a house, with the routine of the children attending school for 6 months when Dawson was born,” said Melissa, “but it just wasn’t for us.

We couldn’t wait to get back on the road.”

Business news Chamber AGM The 2020 AGM of Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) was held last Thursday evening. Highlights from David Perez’s President’s Report delivered at the meeting included: • A steady increase in membership from diverse industries despite numerous pandemic obstacles • An increase in the number of businesses participating in the Eumundi Business Awards resulting in a member being one of the joint winners of Eumundi Business of the Year.

• Gains in taking forward common issues have been strengthened by engaging with other regional chambers • Collaboration with Council on a Placemaking Program for Eumundi to commence shortly has been informed by the 2018 work in collaboration with Visit Sunshine Coast.

• The two director responsibilities at Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Ltd (ECCO) have been particularly challenging due to fallout from the lockdowns, JobKeeper issues, and the ‘bombshell’ effect of immediate and continued carpark loss of revenue from market closures • Investment in the Chamber’s internal communications, a new website www. eumundichamber.com.au, a new logo, and the Lonergan Lane project has allowed the Chamber to expeditiously disseminate valuable information from various

Stalemate in the Middle East

Prior to settling near Eumundi in 2010 I had a 32-year career in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). My career included postings to England, Canada, East Timor and Egypt.

My posting to Egypt occurred in 1996 and I was based in the northern Sinai. I was attached to the Multi-National Force & Observers (MFO), which was responsible for managing the peace between Egypt and Israel. I was accompanied by my wife Sue and our two teenage daughters.

Sue and the girls were not allowed to join me in the Sinai, so we set them up to live in Jerusalem.

I lived and worked with the MFO in the Sinai, and commuted across the Egyptian/Israeli border on a weekly basis to see Sue and the girls in Jerusalem on weekends.

Living in Jerusalem was a real eye-opener. We arrived in the Middle East with mixed feelings about the Israeli/Arab geo-political situation.

Given that Israel is a very small Judaistic country surrounded by Arab countries (Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt), it was easy to understand why the Israelis felt so burdened by the presence and policies of the Arab world.

1996 was a volatile year in Israel. It was the year when Hamas continually fired Katusha rockets from Gaza into Israel, when Israeli soldiers were targeted everywhere they went, particularly at bus stops, and when terrorists blew up several buses and all their occupants in Jerusalem. Sue and the girls walked everywhere.

In the wake of all this violence we had cause to reflect more deeply on the situation between the Israelis and the Palestinians. We began to realise that the Palestinians had a good measure of legitimacy to their claims. Not that we condone violence in any form, but we began to see that the Palestinians had a stronger case than we had previously realised for the establishment of a Palestinian State, and in the process to reclaim land that had once been their traditional home.

By the time we departed Israel/Egypt at the end of 1996 the situation between Israel and the Palestinians remained in stalemate. There had 12

been no resolution of nation-statehood for the Palestinians, and no resolution over whether Jerusalem should be the capital of Israel or the capital of Palestine. As I write this I’m sad to note that in 2020, some 24 years later, little has changed.

When I compare the living environment in the Middle East with the living environment we enjoy in Australia in 2020, I can only conclude that we are very lucky people living in ‘the lucky country’ in a beautiful part of the world. We are a well-established nation-state, we enjoy relative security afforded by our geographical isolation, we don’t have rockets raining down on us on a daily basis, it’s safe to ride on our buses, we can walk along our streets without fear of terrorist attack, and we enjoy the freedoms and benefits that derive from a relatively stable democracy supported by a resource rich economy.

Looking to the future in the Middle East, I continue to hope that the stalemate between Israel and the Palestinians will be broken at some stage. While the MFO continues to monitor Israel’s southern border with Egypt, it alone is unable to have a marked impact on political outcomes in the region. The solution, I believe, will require not just the political will of Israel and the Palestinians, it will require a good measure of genuine compromise by all parties involved.

Community news Getting ready to vote Queensland’s state election this month will no doubt look different to previous years past.

Likely absent will be election day sausage sizzles and candidates greeting voters with hugs and handshakes.

The Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) has developed a ‘mixed model’ election, which will feature expanded in-person and postal voting options with measures implemented on the basis of chief health officer Dr Jeanette Young’s advice. ECQ’s website: www.ecq.qld.gov.au.

There are three main ways Queenslanders can lodge their vote: early voting (pre-poll), postal voting, or physically lining up and voting on October 31.

1. Postal voting applications are open. Visit ECQ’s website to apply. Postal votes will be sent to electors at their nominated address.

2. Early voting (pre-poll) will run from Monday

19 October until Friday 30 October, with convenient early voting centres with expanded opening hours scheduled for Ninderry and beyond.

3. Vote on election day will be from 8am to 6pm on Saturday 31 October at a designated voting centre.

Telephone voting will also be available to voters who meet certain criteria.

New Aussie in Doonan A citizenship ceremony recently in Maroochydore was conducted under COVID19 safe restrictions.

It ran over three sessions and welcomed people of 46 nationalities. Our Div 9 Councillor, Maria Suarez, was there to welcome nine of the ‘new’ Australians who will live in her Div 9.

Hilary Craig is now a citizen of Australia, and is no stranger to living for long periods in other countries. She holds the right to citizenship in Ireland, Britain, Canada, and also spent many years living in Malaysia. Hilary and husband Victor followed their children to Australia, buying their home in Doonan in 2011. They have children and grandchildren in Cooroy, Forest Glen and Brisbane. Hilary said, “I feel unbelievably fortunate to live here.”

Hilary decided to make the commitment to become a citizen, as she believes Australia is a country that offers a secure future. She laments the fact that so many people, in so many countries, do not feel safe.

She went on to say, “I have been frustrated since arriving by so many people not seeming to realise the privilege and security they have.” She suggested that Queensland’s education system could inform students of the reality people in other countries face: living in war zones, or having no freedom of speech. She challenged, “We all need to know how fortunate we are.”

World health In 1996, African leader Nelson Mandela launched the ‘Kick Polio Out of Africa’ campaign with Rotary International’s support, setting out a vision for a polio-free Africa.

Rotary International raises funds from clubs and their supporters across the world. A generous benefactor has been the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

At the time, wild polio paralysed 75,000 children each year. To protect communities from this crippling disease, African leaders, health workers, volunteers, parents, global donors and organisations united to reach every child with polio vaccines.

On 25 August 2020, after four years without a single case of wild polio, the African region has been certified free of wild poliovirus. Decades of

extraordinary investment has paid off.

These efforts must continue to prevent wild polio from returning, and to end all forms of polio for good.

This year Eumundi Rotary is joining in the End Polio Now campaign by promoting the cause and raising funds at train stations on Friday 23 October to address needs in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Rotarians and community members are welcome to join the train that leaves Gympie North at 5.56am, Cooroy 6.35am and Eumundi 6.41am. Car pooling is available back to Eumundi from Nambour. For over 20 years locals have been campaigning for safer pedestrian access across Seib Road Bridge, and since I was elected, I’ve made it one of my top priorities. I’ve aimed to keep you informed of my lobbying efforts over the past three years, and our small wins along the way, including Council’s contribution to the project, and now, thanks to your support, I am proud to be able to announce this project is now 100% funded, and will be delivered.

A huge thank you to the local community for helping deliver this vital active transport link. I can’t wait to see construction get underway on this important project which will help improve community connectivity, and provide safe access across the North Maroochy River.

A question to Council from the treetops of Eumundi Under the Sunshine Coast–Natural Advantage Regional Economic Development Strategy 2013–2033, seven high-value industries were identified as being critical to the success of the strategy.

For each of these industries, Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) created a task force, made up of a small group of people with appropriate expertise to assist in pursuing the objectives of the strategy. The task forces ceased when SCC felt they had achieved their purpose and have not been reinstated since.

Backgrounds of members of each task force included owning or working in core sectors or associated industries, current- or exgovernment employees, together with private sector representatives. All members of the group worked on a pro-bono basis which provided Council with a high level of expertise and experience - at no cost.

For example, oversight and direction was provided by SCC for the task force which would look at problems and issues associated with aviation and aerospace, and provide recommendations to Council.

Since moving to the Sunshine Coast I have met

many people, including retirees, with a depth of knowledge and experience over a wide range of disciplines who could contribute significantly to SCC’s strategic development aspirations, at no cost. It is a pity to not utilise such a deep pool of talented people who, I know, would be eager to contribute.

I flag the value of the task force concept so that – with the recent changeover of CEO and other management positions – Council will consider reinstituting the task forces to maximise the use of the depth of talent in the area to again drive these critical seven, high-value industries, and other opportunities that may arise, for the duration of the strategy.

I believe that they are particularly relevant given the impacts of COVID19 and the need for the region to access such knowledge and expertise to aid in its recovery.

Sport Cheers to Doonan’s Kate and Noosa Tigers Playing sport has always been a passion of local Doonan girl Kate Maggs.

Playing tennis, water polo, hockey, netball, basketball, soccer, and swimming as well as being a nipper at Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving since she was 4 years old.

Over the past four years Kate has taught at several Queensland schools including at the start of this year in Central Queensland as a Physical Education teacher. However, due to impact of COVID19, she moved back to the Coast and has started working in schools in and around Eumundi and Noosa.

On her return, another sport was added to Kate’s impressive list when she joined the inaugural women’s Noosa Tigers’ AFL team. Starting in the back line to learn the game, she now plays in the

forward line, where she kicked the first goal in the grand final won against Palmwoods in late September. Kate and her team mates are still celebrating a special achievement in their first year competing on the Coast.

Regulated dog inspection program Sunshine Coast Council will be undertaking a regulated dog inspection program between 1 November 2020 and 31 October 2021.

The purpose of the program is to conduct a compliance audit at premises within the region where dogs that have been regulated under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 are being kept. The Act requires local governments to manage regulated dogs within their boundaries.

Q&A with Div 10 Cr David Law Eumundi markets - buy local It is great to see the markets back in full swing and people coming to support local businesses within town.

I have had positive feedback on the recently installed $10,000 Council path upgrade at Lonergan Lane that included a new coloured concrete pathway, plus minor landscaping works that everyone in the community can enjoy. The pathway was upgraded when COVID19 caused the temporary closure of the markets. I am looking into some further enhancements here which will really make a difference on market days.

Eumundi Placemaking Please keep an eye out on Council’s website as consultation for Eumundi Placemaking kicks off from November. You are encouraged to get involved in this exciting opportunity.

Why did you want to be a Councillor?

My background is in community services where I worked for 18 years in the disability sector.

Before that, I spent five years (pre-children) travelling Australia with my wife. We lived and worked in every state and eventually settled in Nambour.

Twenty years on I live in Nambour with my wife and three teenage kids, still on the same town block that we bought in 2001. I love Nambour and the surrounding hinterland towns and one of my main reasons for standing for Council is that I want to see this area thrive.

As Councillor I want to build strong and resilient communities which have a clear voice that is heard in the decision making process for each town of Div 10, as well as those region-wide decisions that impact our quality of life on the Sunshine Coast.

My vision for the hinterland is of towns that maintain their unique character while at the same time building their local economy for the benefit of the locals who live there. I will provide the links with Council to enable communities to achieve their goals to truly thrive.

Nominations for Council’s Australia Day 2021 awards Ella Woodborne’s outstanding achievements as an innovative environmental leader at her school won her Council’s Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year 2020, particularly being acknowledged as an inspirational role model to her entire school and beyond. Ella has gone on to more achievements following her award.

The restorative relationship people have with the trees and the birds is reflected in Debra’s latest 2D artworks. Debra explains her connection to the bush when she’s painting the tall gums and curvy birches: “I can breathe deeply and slowly when I am painting among the trees. Moments of spontaneity occur on the canvas…a lightness of feeling becomes a broad brush of colour curved up to the sky.”

Wellbeing Boost your mood How can you boost your mood? Well, you can start by considering some of the key elements which have been shown to improve how we feel: diet, exercise, sleep, and having a positive outlook.

Certain foods can be mood-boosting. Serotonin is essential for overall health and wellbeing, and people often associate it with positive mood.

Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan, so to help your body produce more serotonin, you need to eat foods that contain tryptophan. These include salmon, poultry, eggs, spinach, soy products and nuts.

Having a healthy gut is vital for the production of serotonin, because most of your serotonin is made in your gut - with the brain making a small amount. Tryptophan needs carbohydrates to be able to reach the brain and create serotonin.

Healthy, nutrient-dense carbohydrate sources include fruits, vegetables, and whole grain breads and pastas.

How can you promote a healthy gut? Prebioticrich foods are high in special types of fibre that support digestive health and include bananas, garlic, onions, cocoa, and seaweed, to name a few. They promote the increase of good bacteria in the gut, help with various digestive problems and even boost your immune system.

Probiotic-rich foods also increase good bacteria and sources include yogurt, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, pickles, miso, tempeh, and kimchi.

You can also limit foods that can alter your gut bacteria, such as artificial sweeteners, trans fats, and processed and refined sugar. Always drink plenty of fluids during the day to keep your body and brain hydrated. This is critical for energy levels and correct brain functioning.

Another way to trigger the production of serotonin is to get some sunlight every day. This could help to improve your mood.

What about exercise? The release of endorphins during exercise has benefits for mental as well as physical health, may reduce the risk of depression and may provide an immediate mood boost. Endorphins–often referred to as the ‘happy hormones’–are known to promote positive feelings like pleasure, happiness and may help you cope with pain or stress.

Remember: diet, exercise, sleep, and a positive outlook are all key elements to improving your mood and are best undertaken with the assistance of a health professional.

What are you reading now?

Marina Constanti and her passion for reading Describe your relationship to books: I always have a book or two on the go. Since I stopped working I mix it up more and like a variety of genres and have included a lot more non-fiction.

Perhaps it’s because I seek out more challenging intellectual pursuits now that the pressure of work is behind me.

Earlier in my life I enjoyed books for their storytelling nature escapism, fantasy and then as I moved into my teen years I enjoyed more reality through historical fiction, but have always been drawn to stories with some magic or metaphysics. I have more recently shifted from storytelling to informative knowledge, philosophy, health and wellbeing.

Did you enjoy reading books from a young age? I come from a large immigrant family and as a child we didn’t have any books at home.

Fortunately, I was able to develop my love of books because our local library was on our walk home from school. I was able to duck in and borrow half a dozen books before going home to work in our family store.

I often spent an hour in the library engrossed first in picture books, moving on to the section for adults around 10 years old. I remember the day well, picking my first book off the adult shelf, which was a nonfiction book on Pacific Islands (maybe my love of travel started there!) then being able to sit at the table with the ‘adults’ while I read it. It was almost like some sort of rite of passage, like I had graduated.

What are you reading currently? I just finished The Forgotten Letters by Esther Durrant – a light read I grabbed for a recent trip up north.

To give an idea of the diversity of my reading I am currently reading Goddesses Never Age, 12 Rules for Life and Permission to Feel.

A book that left an impression on you? I will give you two because they are related and 26

they are both about the power of words which make up our story-telling capacity. The first The Surgeon of Crowthorne by Simon Winchester is based on a true story about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary which was a monumental 50-year task requiring thousands of volunteers.

The second book is The Dictionary of Lost Words

by Australian author Pip Williams, about a young girl who at the time of the gathering of words for the Oxford Dictionary by her father and others manages to collect and hide some of the words that have been discarded, misplaced or neglected by the dictionary men. Many of these words were deemed inappropriate by the men for inclusion.

They say everyone has a book in them. Do you? I think I do and have actually been thinking about this in the last couple of weeks. I don’t know if it will be biographical or a work of pure fiction. I feel I will need a few lessons in creative writing to help give me direction.

Get involved by participating during 19-25 October in 2020. Birdlife is the peak body in Australia which, through research and actionbased projects, supports our incredible variety of birds and our many unique species.

Register as a ‘counter’ at www.aussiebirdcount. org.au.

Answer a few questions, then download the Aussie Bird Count app. Select times and places for your observations. Watch for as many times you like over the week, with each count completed in a 20-minute period. You can choose your own backyard and set yourself up with a cup of tea, or visit a patch of forest, a wetland, down at the beach or even in town.

Just use your eyes, or binoculars, or take photos of the birds and use bird identification books or apps to help. After a few times, you will recognise the frequent visitors. Record which birds you see, and how many. Enter this data onto the Backyard Bird Count site. Great prizes are on offer: Swarovski Optik binoculars, a fine art print, and enamel pins.

One of us How local is this local?

Bob Mitchell was born in 1943 in Sunny Brae Hospital which is now the centrepiece of Eumundi Showgrounds. A true Eumundi local, Bob grew up on a dairy farm and attended Eumundi State School and later Nambour State High. Bob has fond memories of travelling to high school by steam train, and hitchhiking back to the railway, ready to ride his pushbike back home. He wagged school occasionally.

He enjoyed his time with friends throughout his school years but said, “Teachers gave you too much homework in those days, so I never got on with them too well.”

Bob was preoccupied with his curiosity for all things mechanical, but he still managed to pass all his subjects in the Junior Public exam. He left school the moment he could to pursue his interest in mechanics.

In 1960, Bob started his apprenticeship in Pomona. He then began working with his brother Colin at his garage which was located where Berkelouw Books is now. After 20 years, Colin moved on to farming and Bob became the business operator and eventually bought the freehold. Many years later he sold it to his garage successor, two Kiwis.

Bob met the love of his life Colleen, a young lady from the tiny outback town of Morven, who was on a seven-week holiday in Eumundi.

This trip turned into a lifetime for the 18 year old. After three years, the couple were married in the Catholic Church in Nambour, and as a married couple their first home was rented flats where the Pavilion markets are now. They lived there for six years. After the birth of their two daughters, Karen and Janelle, the young family moved into their new home on the high side of Memorial Dr. The couple purchased the home from a bank when the bank manager was transferred, and the bank closed.

Work at the garage was “more than full-time for him and his family life” but Bob managed to play football for the Cooroy Football Club. Playing golf has also been a regular pursuit over many 28

years.

Bob says he and Colleen and their girls enjoyed holidays in some good places but nowhere else could compete with Eumundi as a place to live and to maintain friendships.

“Eumundi and its community have been pretty special to me. I’m very grateful for the friendships and to have the chance to join in community events and fundraisers. I drove the community bus for a while and that brought me in touch with younger people out for a night’s fun and older folk shopping in Cooroy and Noosaville. I especially remember the Verrierdale full moon dances and footie games.”

These days, Bob visits Colleen daily for lunch at a Noosa nursing home and he enjoys pottering around in his shed, feeding his regular visiting lorikeets, magpies, butcher birds and pigeons, and visiting nearby Joe’s Waterhole for his daily drop and having “a bit of a laugh and getting all the gossip” with regulars as he has done for nearly 60 years – a local known and loved by many.

Harvest Swap Eumundi update

Sample of harvest swap A large variety of produce was displayed at the recent harvest swap, a sign that spring is here.

There was lots of sharing of information on how to grow edibles. One of the group brought a Warrigal Greens along, and demonstrated how to process it. This created a discussion on how to eat it!

Harvest Swap Eumundi is the last Thursday of the month. The next one is on 29 October, in the courtyard at Deadly Espresso. Parking is available and setup of swap items begins at 10am with the Swap starting around 10.15am – usually all over by 11am.

Plant profile – Warrigal Greens Warrigal Greens, also known as Warrigal Spinach, New Zealand Spinach and Botany Bay greens, were one of the first native Australian vegetables to become popular with European settlers.

Captain Cook found them in Botany Bay and in New Zealand and encouraged his men to eat them as a way to fight scurvy. Many a convict owed their lives to this plant. Seeds were taken back to England by the botanist Joseph Banks.

The plant became popular, with seeds being sent to Europe and North America.

Easy to propagate, it grows wild in the sand dunes along the Sunshine Coast. A sprawling plant around 50cm high, it trails to around 1 to 2 metres long, and can trail from a pot if room is scarce. Grown from seeds or cuttings, they will self-seed readily.

The leaves contain oxalic acidic which in large amounts can cause kidney and other health issues so it’s best to blanch leaves in boiled water for a few minutes to remove it, and discard the water. Use as you would spinach, in quiche, frittata, omelette or stir fries and for something different, try pesto.

Recipe Warrigal Greens pesto with macadamia nuts 2 cups Warrigal Greens, blanched & chopped 1/3 cup macadamia nuts roasted & roughly chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1/3cup grated parmesan 1/2 cup macadamia oil or olive oil, preferably extra virgin Salt and pepper to taste Blend all ingredients in a food processor, leaving a little oil aside to be added if the mix is a little dry. More oil can also be added to create a thinner pasta sauce.

Keep in the fridge in an air tight container…,if you have any left once you taste it!
