Private Cooke died as a result of wounds received at Gallipoli. Private Rubenach died onboard a ship returning him to Australia in 1919, having enlisted in 1915. The majority of the soldiers died in either France or Belgium. Many have no known graves but their names are on memorials in Ypres, Belgium, Villers-Bretonneux and other towns in France.

Eumundi Remembrance Day The Eumundi Remembrance Day event organised by the Eumundi Historical Assn (EHA) will be held Friday 11 November at the WW1 heritage trees opposite the Eumundi Post Office on Memorial Dr from 10.15-11.15am. All welcome.

In its fourth year, the Noosa Yoga and Wellness Festival will be held on Saturday 19 November at Verrierdale Hall. “Unity within our Community” is the festival’s intention, aiming to share a collaboration of leading, like-minded, holistic practitioners, teachers, guides, educators, mentors and instructors. Matso’s development Halloween “The street was absolutely packed. I couldn’t believe it. There were families and kids everywhere having a great time. I made sure everyone said ‘thank you’ for the lollies. I really rather enjoyed it.”

This was the reaction from a new resident in the Burrell Ave area who had never seen Halloween Eumundi-style. As most people were out during daylight there was a family-friendly atmosphere with kids, dogs, parents and friends all dressed up in costumes, wandering around, chatting and admiring the creativity. Some remembered the massive, destructive storm two years ago … luckily it did not make a repeat performance.

More than 50 locals keen to hear about the planned development at Matso’s Sunshine Coast gathered at Joe’s Waterhole on Monday 24 October for a community night to view architect and landscape plans. There were opportunities to ask questions from Matso’s and architect representatives who circulated around the tables to explain and clarify aspects of the concept plans.

The Proposed Development document states the “current owner wishes to conserve the existing hotel building, remove the bottleshop and structures at the rear and redevelop into Matso’s Brewery Eumundi”.

One attendee said that she understood the proposed development includes four large pavilion areas encompassing a public bar, bistro, brewery and gaming bar. There are also three or four stage areas for live music, a large outdoor area, five accommodation areas upstairs and four carparking places. The disability access pathway will stretch from Memorial Dr through to the outdoor areas. Plans are with council for approval.

Op shop treasures

Donating to op shops is a great way to reduce landfill and give consumer goods a second life. A 2021 survey by Charitable Recycling Australia found the average Australian donated 39kg of goods for reuse to charity each year including 12kg of clothing. According to the National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations, charity shops divert around 588,000 tonnes of reusable waste from landfill in Australia each year.

Who doesn’t love a bargain? Opportunity shops form an important part of our community and you don’t have to look far to find one. Op shop staff and volunteers are dedicated to supporting their charity by collecting, sorting and displaying donations and helping you find that ‘special something’.

If you’re de-cluttering at home, consider recycling options via your local op shop. Think what you can donate to help others in the leadup to Christmas and consider finding a ‘reloved’ item for yourself or as a gift. Rhonda Piggott

Collaboration with colleagues created a program including permaculture design, implementation and activities linked to science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. For example, the Prep-Grade 3s created Indigenous stick dolls using traditional methods of grinding colours and weaving grasses into skirts.

Many children spend lunchtime watering plants, feeding the poultry, weeding and asking innumerable questions of Mr Gemmell. Every Thursday and Friday whole classes enjoy handson learning and learn to realise how long it takes from seedling to food. Their worm farms process the local markets’ organic waste into fertiliser which also benefits local gardens.

Inspirational teacher – Jon Gemmell For 27 years Eumundi State School (ESS) teacher Jon Gemmell has inspired students, parents and colleagues with his passion for engaging students in gardening, with positive effects on learning and significant long-term retention of concepts. In recognition of his outstanding contribution Jon was a finalist in the Merline Muldoon Memorial Award for Innovation in Teaching.

In 2011 the school won a $250,000 grant as Qld’s Healthiest School allowing Jon to continue the work of Alan Henderson, Gee Westera and Fiona Ball. An unused area is now an Enviro Centre with 35 trees, vegetable gardens, composting facilities, worm farms and chicken coops. Jon admits frustration during extremely wet or dry

Short story: The Beach House

by Anne Winning Part 2 Continued from Eumundi Voice issue 56.

Her personal slide show spun further back till BH relived Glenda’s wedding. She had worn white bunting all around the deck and a red carpet had been rolled down her hallway. She could still feel the swelling of her heart when she’d been adorned with such glamour. She was the only house along this beach that had been honoured in such a way. She remembered standing proudly in the background while the wedding party was photographed on her front steps.

There were all those family Christmases too. The dining table and number of chairs seemingly grew by the year. Every Christmas she’d had to tolerate the scratchy pine leaves rubbing against her sides. No-one seemed to notice until they’d become scars on her complexion when she couldn’t keep her paint clean anymore. I got a complete makeover after that and felt thoroughly modern in the new colour. They also put in a new stove and kitchen cupboards – no more smoke stains on my walls. I felt treasured that they were investing in me for the long term.

I wonder, is three generations a good innings for a beach house these days? I know I could

last longer – look at how I stood up to that storm last night – but all my neighbours who were alongside me for years have already been put to rest. I know I stick out like a sore thumb with my weatherboard cladding and tin roof.

I’m surrounded by concrete monsters towering either side of me. It feels like they are looking down on me. They hardly have a patch of ground to stand on, never mind trees and lawn. They don’t know what’s valuable.

BH shuddered when she saw the gleaming sports car pull up in front of the sign at the bottom of the garden. She recognised that car – it had been around each time before her neighbours had clattered to the ground.

She could feel her walls shrink and her floor sag.

Her colour paled, her windows trembled. How much will it hurt when they pull me apart? I hope they bury a piece of me with Glenda.

Regulated dog inspection program Sunshine Coast Council will be undertaking a regulated dog inspection program between 14 November 2022 and 13 November 2023. The purpose of this program is to conduct a compliance audit at premises within the region where dogs that have been regulated under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 are being kept. The Act

requires local governments to manage regulated dogs within their boundaries. The program will work to ensure animal owners are adhering to the mandatory conditions for keeping a regulated dog to reduce the risk posed by these animals. A copy of the program is available on council’s website.
