I have always loved the Archibald and the controversy often surrounding the finalists. I have been to Sydney many times just to see the Archibald.

Sconetime is back Last Tuesday Martin Duncan with his volunteer team and support from local business operators, hosted the first Sconetime since the Covid19 outbreak. More than 90 scone lovers from the local community and retirement and aged care villages gathered at the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Entertainment by pianist Adam Bishop added to the atmosphere. Martin had been at work baking hundreds of scones, supported by more volunteers who whipped cream, washed dishes, made tea and coffee and more. After all attendees had eaten their fill, volunteers took scones covered in jam and cream to local businesses as a small treat.

Sconetime was launched in June 2018 in the Cooroy Memorial Hall after Martin saw a story about 96-year-old Georgina from the UK. Without a family, she was lonely and decided to become involved with a charity that hosted tea parties for those over 75 years old. Martin decided it was a way to bring senior community members of Cooroy and surrounding areas together, make new friends and have a wonderful morning tea looked after by volunteers.

It was a hit and Martin now hosts monthly Sconetime in Cooroy and Caloundra with Nambour and Yandina starting soon. Next Sconetime in Cooroy will be on Tuesday, 13 April 10am–11.30am, $8. One day I thought that maybe I could muster the courage to enter. That meant for me finding someone in the arts to agree to sit for me and have confidence that I could do that person justice.

I went to school with Christine Johnston (Eve Kransky from the Kransky Sisters aka Madame Lark and many other characters that she has created in the performing arts scene). Christine is an amazingly talented woman, her singing voice, her bird calls, playing the saw. She has been in numerous opera productions not to mention her success with The Kransky Sisters.

I had not spoken to Christine for 40 years even though we had been great friends at school. I contacted her and she replied within minutes saying, “Lisa, I was just thinking of you the other day.” I popped the question and she said yes.

We have been catching up over the phone on a regular basis since that day late last year. I needed to sit with her in as part of the ’Archie’ regulations. When we met, it was just like old times, loads of laughter, and hugs.

So, I have painted the very beautiful, talented and colourful Christine Johnston.

If I don’t make the finals I’ve renewed a wonderful friendship, and that has given me tremendous joy.”

Fundraising news World’s Greatest Shave

Salon Eumundi’s owner Ashlee Collins busy shaving John McDermott A crowd of 250 gathered at the McDermott Aviation hanger at Sunshine Coast Airport last week in support of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Ten volunteers participated in a variety of hair removal treatments, all in the name of the fundraiser. The entire fundraising campaign raised a remarkable donation of $25,000.

Thirteen Good Shepherd students shaved to support this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. This event is part of Good Shepherd’s continuing activities in support of those fighting blood cancer, including the work of research scientists making ground-breaking advancements in blood cancer treatment. Multiple fundraising activities have raised $23,275, exceeding the target of $15,000.

Funding for 200 birthing kits for across the world International Women’s Day was an opportunity for Year 11 Good Shepherd students to raise money through selling 200 cupcakes to help vulnerable women across the world. As part of Service Learning, students decided to support a vision which sees all women having access to clean and safe birthing. The students will assemble birthing kits provided through the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia with the support of the Zonta Club of Noosa. Their fundraising activity of selling cupcakes will help fund 200 kits at a cost of $5 each. The kits reduce infections during labour, birth and post-birth for the mother, the newborn and birth attendants.

It is estimated that over 300,000 women from developing countries die annually in childbirth– many from preventable infections.

The best time to negotiate your salary is when you are being offered a job. Ask for a review of salary in 6 months—which gives you time to prove your ability.

Do not assume an employer has a fixed view of how much they are going to pay you. Sell the benefits of why giving you a higher salary is good for the employer, for example, you are ‘a mature reliable employee who understands the importance of excellent customer service’ or ‘you bring a wealth of IT skills that would add value to the business’ or ‘in my previous job I was leading hand’.

If your salary is guided by an award find out the salary bands for that award. This puts you in a better position to aim for the higher rate.

With Easter just around the corner, there’s lots of hope and optimism the upcoming school holidays will reap benefits for our tourism-related small businesses. With the roll out of the COVID vaccine now underway, I know many are relying on state borders remaining open so we can welcome tourists back into the state for what is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year.

In the last sitting week of Parliament, we passed milestone legislation that will put an end to the use of single use plastics. I was pleased to support these new laws that affect single use straws, stirrers, cutlery, bowls and plates, as well as polystyrene cups and food containers. The ban comes into effect from 1 September, 2021, and is a great step forward. This week, we are debating amendments to the Criminal Code to help further strengthen laws around consent, as well as important amendments to the Child Protection Act to provide long term care options such as adoption for vulnerable children in departmental care.

Need a JP to witness your signature or certify important documents? My office now offers a JP service on the first and third Wednesday of the month. The next session will be Wednesday 7 April. Bookings are essential.

Now is the time: Kids on tour A range of hands-on art-making activities to encourage children to reflect on climate change and the environment will featured at the Butter Factory Arts Centre. Developed by contemporary Australian artist Raquel Ormella, in collaboration with the Qld Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) this touring exhibition will be open in Cooroy 1-16 April.

Woof, I’m Belinda the head trainer of Heel Sit and Stay! Dog Obedience, located in Cooroy. I undertook my training through Craig Murray who is an Internationally Certified Specialist Dog Trainer.

I started Heel, Sit & Stay in 2013. Thousands of dogs and twice as many owners have attended training with me. Some owners have graduated through Puppy Pre-school to Advanced classes and are now training their second puppy family.

In addition to regular training, I recently introduced a Community Engagement program to help some of our more senior clients who face specific challenges training their dogs. There have been some great results from this program where owners are now enjoying the companionship well-behaved dogs can bring.

Dundell dogs Mutt Movers The Mutt Movers is a very small group of local animal lovers who move dogs from outer-lying drought affected areas to the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge. The dogs come from country council pounds. They are strays and surrenders, or seized as cases of cruelty, and face euthanasia.

The group has been operating for about three years now with a short stop due to pandemic restrictions.

Since December last year the group has made four trips transporting 44 dogs from very young puppies to older dogs of many different breeds.

The group now have their own dog trailer which allows for greater numbers of dogs to be saved and safely transported.

The group is always looking for new members.

Waggy Tail Man story

This CD was written in 1997 and released in 1998 through the collaboration of Janet Millington and the musical genius of Ian Harvey (from Hardley Bizarre and later The Pleasure Kings).

Ian, known as Harv, had just set up a sound studio in his Eumundi house and Janet needed a song for a performance. Besotted by her new puppy, Janet decided to write a song about her pup and get Harv to play the backing. Janet is a writer not a singer.

Ex-Eumundi locals Richard and Michelle Thurbon have five working dogs on their sheepgrazing property Dundell near Goulburn in the Southern Tablelands of New south Wales. Oldest dog Marley a 6yo Border Collie had never seen a sheep in her life before moving to the farm in June 2019. Her natural instincts quickly kicked in and along with some training Marley was rounding up sheep in the paddock and the stockyards in no time at all.

With nearly 1500 sheep and lambs to muster on a regular basis for operations such as shearing, drenching and lamb marking, Marley needed some help…. Marley had pups in August 2019 to a NZ Huntaway-Kelpie cross. Marley’s pups Harold, Beryl and Ruby have all been keen and quick to learn and have developed in to very capable working dogs.

Tilli the 10-year-old Mini Fox Terrier has enjoyed her move to the farm. An abundance of rabbits and foxes keeps her gainfully ‘employed’ throughout the year.

Soon Harv played and sang Waggy Tail Man swearing all to secrecy about his involvement in such a trite and uncool musical event. Somehow the CD was played at the Imperial Hotel after a gig.

Janet refused to reveal the singer/musician until Harv saw the crowd outside were all wagging their ‘tails’ and demanding more. And so, eight more songs were written in diverse genres from the blues to operetta. Local musicians were roped in and for the final song, He’s Me Mate drinkers from the pub were enticed by a slab to sing the chorus on Harv’s veranda while Janet pointed to the lyrics on butcher’s paper. One practice and one take and the Eumundi Mongrel Choir was formed and immortalised. Part of the funds went to the RSPCA and $200 went with Barry Charles to the Battersea Dog’s Home as a donation from Eumundi.

Leo and his Smart Pups assistance dog Jester

Smart Pups Leo’s grandparents took him and Jester on a Christmas shopping trip last December. It was a special outing for Leo who has autism and ADHD. Leo’s Smart Pup assistance dog Jester was an integral participant in the shopping trip.

Not long into the outing, however, Leo found the Christmas rush too overwhelming for him.

Jester came to the rescue providing Leo—who was lying on the floor of the shopping centre— with the comfort and distraction he needed to recover and continue shopping.

The centre offers the following advice: “When you take home a new dog or puppy, remember that you are not best mates yet, you are virtually strangers who have only met a couple of times. The first few days in a new home are really stressful for dogs. They don’t know the family, the house, the yard, the neighbourhood noises and smells, or other pets. Adult dogs with an unknown past may find your home to be a very different place to what they are used to. The effort and training you put into your dog will ultimately determine the success of the adoption. Dogs are not born knowing the household rules and polite greeting manners; it is something you must teach them”.

Toad toxicity in our pets The recent rains have not only brought beautiful green grass and full dams, but they’ve also seen the rise of our not-so-popular, ‘hoppy’ friends.

Cane toads are out in force and unfortunately that means they are finding their way into our back yards and getting up close and personal with our cats and dogs.

So what do you know about toad toxicity?

• When threatened, toads will release a potent milky poison called bufotoxin. They can squirt this toxin up to two metres!

• The toxin is rapidly absorbed across the ‘mucous membranes’ of our pets, usually via the gums but also via the tongue, eyes and nose. It then enters the bloodstream and starts to affect the heart, gastrointestinal tract and nervous system.

What are the clinical signs of toad toxicity?

It will depend on the amount of toxin that is absorbed and the length of time from when the toxin is absorbed.

If you see your pet has just been poisoned, immediately wipe their gums and tongue with a wet cloth. This helps prevent further absorption of the poison. Continue this process, rinsing the cloth regularly, for 10–20 minutes.

Never use a hose to wash out your pet’s mouth.

This usually results in your pet panicking and inhaling the water into their lungs.

If your pet does not return to normal or is showing further signs of toxicity, contact your vet immediately for further advice.

At the vet, your pet may require medication to prevent further vomiting, stop seizures and/or stabilise their heart rate. They may also require intravenous fluids to dilute the toxin and maintain blood pressure, oxygen therapy and ongoing monitoring depending on the severity of the poisoning.

How do you prevent toad toxicity?

Unfortunately, a ‘hoppy’ toad can be the most exciting thing in the garden! It is very difficult to teach your pet not to be intrigued by this and therefore it is best to just try to avoid their exposure.

• Keep your pet inside at ‘hoppy hours’ - usually when the sun goes down and the rains are here!

• Empty outdoor water bowls and paddling pools at night, and fill them fresh in the morning.

• Keep those pets that are especially intrigued on leads for toilet breaks at night especially puppies in training.

Australian legislation and a changing culture has led to rescue organisations set up to find homes, puppy schools to train owners how to read the behaviour of their new pets and ensuring dog breeding is only under humane conditions.

A little history of dogs Archaeological evidence suggests that humans and dogs have had a long-standing relationship.

Wolves recognised humans as a source of scraps, and by a slow process of domestication, wolves accepted the mutually beneficial relationship of food, shelter and protection. When wolves helped humans with hunting, the bond was sealed, over 30,000 years ago.

Now, hundreds of dog breeds are recognised: from the feather-weight teacup poodle to the Rottweiler at 60kg.

Dogs have become specialists at herding sheep or cattle or retrieving birds. The relationship is not limited to practicalities, with evidence of a special bond. “In Bonn-Oberkassel (Germany) the skeleton of a disabled dog was buried with the bodies of a man and of a woman; radiocarbon dating puts this at about 14,300 years ago” (www.boehringer-ingelheid.com). In Egypt, it was the god Anubis who escorted you to the afterlife.

Georgia and Lauralee preparing for a busy pop-up trading day for Tipple & Bean

Tipple & Bean This time last year Eumundi local Lauralee Berrill was business manager for a Noosa tourist company. Fast forward to 2021 she has reinvented herself as an innovative, small business operator. In response to Covid19, Lauralee had a retro van built and set up as a bar and espresso van. This was for use in the Eumundi markets and local events. It soon became obvious that Lauralee needed to have a permanent presence in the town. The answer came through a chance to open a small pop-up space in Memorial Dr selling espresso, gelato and flowers and targeting visitors and locals, particularly the after-school crowd who make use of the nearby Caplick Park.

The tradition of April Fool on 1 April has been celebrated for several centuries across different cultures, but the exact origins are shrouded in mystery. Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, that is from 1 April as New Year’s Day to 1 January. The recent free tree day at Peregian Breeze was well attended. Residents took two free trees home for their gardens and council left with a list of requests for new street trees on the nature strip out the front of their properties. I’ll host more free tree days in the future, and I’d love to meet you there, so please keep an eye on my Facebook page for details. The parks team will be working in Division 9 in May so If you’d like to be considered for a new street tree outside your home, please contact council.

The history of Easter Why eggs, bunnies and buns at Easter?

All the things we love about Easter have little connection to Christ’s death and resurrection.

The name links to Ishtar, also called Astare, an ancient goddess linked with fertility who was later resurrected from the underworld. Pagan Anglo Saxons revelling “mad as March Hares”, in the fertility rites of the Northern Hemisphere’s Spring Equinox, worshipped Eostre with her symbols of fertile rabbits and eggs.

Unable to stop the fun, like other pagan festivals, the early Christian Church adopted “Easter” bringing in the serious remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice followed by the celebration of resurrection and new life.

However, the date is not fixed. Like the pagan festival, it depends on phases of the moon, linking also with the Jewish Passover, when Jesus was crucified. Our word Pascal derives from the Greek word Pascha (Italian Pasque) meaning born on Easter day.

Exchanging eggs is an ancient custom in many cultures–chocolate being a modern indulgence.

Germany made the first edible Easter bunnies from sugared pastry in the 19th century. Cadbury began producing Easter eggs in 1875 and now spends eight months of the year making Easter chocolates in its Tasmanian factory.

Australia has no problems with rabbits–if they are chocolate.

Hot cross (crossed) buns are ancient too. The Israelites incurred God’s wrath for baking sweet buns for an idol. The early Church tried to put a stop to sacred cakes but after the restrictions of Lent when no indulgent ingredients could be eaten, defiant cake-baking women won and the church blessed the buns provided they were ‘crossed’. Elizabeth 1 passed a law that the buns were only to be sold at Easter. However, in 2017 Woolworths alone sold 72 million hot cross buns in Australia.

So, whether we go to Easter services or not, are we all gastronomically pagans? Happy Easter.

Australian Body Art Festival The Australian Body Art Festival will be held at the Apex Park, Cooroy Friday 9 to Sunday 11 April. The theme ‘Time Travel’ is raising much interest after the disappointment of a pandemicrelated cancellation of last year’s festival.

The Sunshine Festival Noosa Alive! Reignite 2021 was held at the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Club grounds on Bicentennial Drive Noosa Heads on Saturday 13 March. A

highlight of the day event was watching Visual Artist Shelley Murfitt creating her original artwork of a koala which was raffled during the evening event, with proceeds donated to Koala Crusaders. Neptune, Man on Stilts, and Tree Man were a colourful addition to the day.

Sport Well done Zac Congratulations to Zac Harrison and three other Eumundi State School students who gained a place in the District team after they represented the school at the District swimming carnival which was held in the excellent pool at St Andrews Anglican College at Peregian Springs.

On 3 March they travelled to the meet at Burpengary Aquatic Centre as part of the District team. Zac won a place in the Sunshine Coast Regional Swimming Team and was then selected to swim in the 100m freestyle and all 50m events at the state swimming trials in late March.

Good luck Zac at the state trials and well done to all swimmers whose talent and dedication to training led them through their school carnival to swim at Districts and made it to Regional level.

Mini meet Last week, Eumundi Aquatic Centre hosted one of its regular mini meets. These are fun, free events open to anyone who can swim a minimum 25m of freestyle. The goals for the events are to show what the’ littlies’ have been learning during their lessons, to gain confidence in their swimming abilities, to gain exposure to club style events and most importantly have fun while making friends.

The events are run informally with no prizes and with amended competition rules to allow

Times are recorded but only for the benefit of the swimmers to measure improvement. The senior swimmers of the program also assist the young ones in getting involved and teaching them some finer points about racing.

Thanks to Eumundi and District Swimming Club for their assistance in these events and support for mini meets held every three months with attendance typically 50-60 swimmers aged 7 to 11 years.

Sunshine Coast Baseball Assn The club runs baseball competitions for ages 4 to 104. Everyone is welcome.

A NxtGen Baseball Camp is headed to our fields at Mudjimba to host a day of baseball drills and skills training on 14 April during the school holidays.

NxtGen Baseball is run by Trent Oeltjen and Ryan Rowland-Smith who are Australian Baseball Olympic silver medallists and both played Major League Baseball in the United States. The upcoming camp day is for ages 6 to 16 and will be filled with lots of fun activities and opportunities to make new friends. There are quite a few kids signed up already, and more are welcome. The interest in baseball is constantly increasing on the coast, and this day is not one to be missed!

Eumundi Magpies Futsal Club The club finished the 2020-2021 Sunshine Coast Futsal Assn’s tournament on a high, winning their last game 4-3, with a great performance from each one of the players. Their effort, passion and discipline shown on each Monday game was outstanding, as was the growth in skills and understanding of the game. Next season, which starts from Term 2, the Magpies will be competing in two divisions (8-9 year olds and 10-11 year olds) and are looking at expanding our capability as a club.
