I’m Still Standing! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so I thought it was the right time to share an update on my story. After 17 years in the real estate industry, I launched Heidi Woodman Property in February 2025. Just three months later, in May, I was diagnosed with breast cancer that had likely been developing over the past two years since my last check-up. Not great timing… but then there’s never really a convenient time to get cancer, is there? Surprisingly, it didn’t show up on the mammogram, only on the routine ultrasound. Luckily, I was having both done. Luckier still, it wasn’t the most aggressive type of breast cancer, and it was caught early enough that it hadn’t spread to my lymph nodes. I’m relieved to say that this year’s 12 month followup scan showed the surgery to be successful with no signs of cancer. Not all women are that fortunate. One in seven Australian women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, an alarmingly high statistic… and sadly, not all survive. Most of us know someone who has been touched by this disease, yet it is still an area that many women fail to have checked on a regular basis. It is my hope that stories such as mine will empower more women to take a proactive approach in safe guarding their future.

Final touches scheduled for Eumundi Streetscape Project Residents eager to see the completion of the Eumundi Streetscaping Project will not have to wait much longer, with Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) confirming the final stage of works is scheduled for October and November. The construction which began in 2024 has transformed the heart of Eumundi through a series of upgrades designed to improve safety, accessibility and the overall visitor experience while celebrating the town’s unique heritage and character. Works completed so far include upgraded footpaths, new seating and landscaping, pedestrian connections, enhanced lighting, and public spaces designed to support both locals and visitors. The project has also focused on creating stronger links between key destinations within the town centre and providing a more welcoming environment for the thousands of people who visit Eumundi each year. Responding to questions from Eumundi Voice about the project timeline, a SCC representative confirmed that the remaining works have been carefully scheduled. “The final elements of the streetscape design have been programmed to align with contractor availability and to avoid the busy school holiday period,” the spokesperson said. The remaining features to be installed during October and November include the Bullock Turning Circle interpretation element, wayfinding signage panels, the Lonergan Ln mural, gobo lighting projections in Lonergan Ln and near the seating area at Market Square, and the Lonergan Ln pedestrian link public art light installation on the arbour. SCC also advised that the Cultural Heritage and Art Trail is currently in development and will be delivered later this year. 10
Fix, restore, reuse Repair Café Eumundi is part of a global movement helping people repair household items that might otherwise end up in landfill, saving valuable resources while strengthening community connections. More than a place to mend broken belongings, the café brings residents together to share stories, memories and skills. Many items repaired carry personal significance, from treasured family heirlooms to everyday appliances that still have years of life left in them. The environmental benefits extend far beyond the weight of the items saved. Every successful repair avoids the need to manufacture a replacement, preserving the energy, materials and costs involved in mining, smelting, production, transport, warehousing and retail. In just 4 months, a small team of dedicated volunteers has assisted more than 20 residents and repaired almost 100kg of household items. Using the UK National Carbon Calculator, this equates to an estimated 864kg of carbon emissions avoided. Most repairs have involved electrical appliances, often restored through simple fixes such as repairing broken connections or clearing blocked airways. The volunteer team continues to grow and now includes specialists in clothing repairs, sewing machines, bicycles, typewriters, general repairs and a licensed electrician. Services are offered free of charge, although donations are appreciated to help cover hall hire costs. The next Repair Café on 8 October will feature sewing machine and typewriter experts. At 11am the typewriter specialist will present The Digitally Disillusioned, exploring the renewed interest in traditional typewriters. Actor Tom Hanks, who reportedly owns more than 300 typewriters, says he prefers the thoughtful permanence of ink on paper to email. For more information visit: eumundiresidents.org.au.

The Journeymen have become beacons in most Sunshine Coast communities helping wherever a hand is needed. Recently Will and Luke served breakfast at Eumundi State School to dads and children for Father’s Day. Even the event date is deliberately chosen to avoid other “trick or treat” plans for 31 October. The Journeymen invite everyone, especially newcomers or those alone, to come and have fun, connect with community and help them continue creating spaces where men know they don’t have to walk alone.
Nandroya Rd closure Noosa Council has provided an update to residents regarding the planned closure of Nandroya Rd for approximately 4 months as significant landslip remediation works are undertaken. The closure will result in no through access along Nandroya Rd, with motorists required to use alternative routes throughout the construction period. Under the proposed traffic management arrangements, residents travelling between Cooroy and Eumundi will be detoured via Eumundi Range Rd, Memorial Dr and the Bruce Highway. With increased traffic expected to flow through Eumundi during the closure, motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and to exercise extra caution when travelling through the township, particularly during peak periods and school drop-off and pick-up times near Eumundi State School. Construction crews were initially scheduled to commence work in late September. However, the start date and road closure remain dependent on the receipt of final traffic and environmental approvals which are still being processed. As a result, works are now anticipated to begin in early to mid-October. Noosa Council has advised that it will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses. Variable Message Signs will be installed ahead of the closure to provide residents and motorists with advance notice once the official closure date has been confirmed. Residents seeking further information can contact Noosa Council via email at: disasterconstruction@ noosa.qld.gov.au.

HISTORY
Bernard O’Reilly 1937. Image courtesy of State Library of Queensland
Stinson air disaster Lamington National Park is a rugged area of the Great Dividing Range in Qld on the border of NSW. Popular with bushwalkers, it is renowned for its rainforests, birdlife, ancient trees and magnificent mountain views, offering escape from the hurlyburly of daily life. On a recent visit there I was impressed by the variety and standard of accommodation now on offer to visitors – quite different to our first visit in the mid-1970s when O’Reilly’s smaller guesthouse en route to the Lost World plateau was run by the Youth Hostels Assn (YHA). The story of Bernard O’Reilly and his part in the fabled Stinson air disaster also continues to draw visitors to the area. A pivotal event in Australian aviation and pioneering history, the legendary story highlights the forbidding nature of remote
terrain, the limited safety measures in aviation at the time, as well as the bush skills and tenacity of locals like O’Reilly. In 1937 a Stinson aircraft carrying 2 pilots and 5 passengers disappeared on a regular flight from Brisbane to Sydney. The loss made national headlines and reports of last sightings flooded in, including some saying the plane had been seen heading out to sea. A massive search was undertaken which assumed the plane had skipped its scheduled stop in Lismore due to the bad weather, and so for a full week searchers focused on an area north and west of Sydney. Further north, Bernard O’Reilly, whose family lived and farmed on the edge of the Lamington National Park in Southern Qld, was not convinced by the reasoning and the day after the official search was halted he set off on his own mission. Following a simple strategy of drawing a straight line through the flight points on a topographical map he worked out that there were 3 northfacing slopes on which the plane could possibly have crashed before even reaching Lismore. He set out with a couple of days’ supply of bread, onions and tea to locate the wreck which could possibly lie within 777 square kilometres of dense forest bushland between NSW and Qld. The Lamington Ranges rise to over 1,200m above sea level in places, and with only the difference in vegetation growing on drier northerly slopes and damper southerly slopes to guide him, O’Reilly bush bashed his way for 2 days and nights up and down the ridges. Then from a ridge top he spotted a brown tree amongst the greenery on a distant slope and continued his way towards it. At one point he heard voices calling, and thinking it was other searchers he at first avoided calling

back for fear of confusing them. He did not expect to find survivors! The plane had actually been caught in the upwind of a cyclone, and as they crashed to ground the pilot leaned to starboard giving the 3 passengers on the port side, Binstead, Proud and Westray some chance of survival. O’Reilly discovered Binstead and Proud barely alive, but all he had to offer them was tea so in his own words he ‘put the billy on to boil’. As he then hastily fought his way down to a nearby valley to seek help, he came across the body of Westray who had died after falling down a waterfall on his way to find help. Reaching a farm he raised the alarm, and so 11 days after the plane’s disappearance volunteers rallied to the cause, working through the night to cut a path through the wilderness in time to save both Binstead and Proud. It’s an extraordinary story of courage and determination – and you can read O’Reilly’s detailed account in his book Green Mountains and Cullenbenbong. It’s a very readable autobiographical chronicle of his family’s pioneering life in the Blue Mountains as well as Lamington. It also details his extensive interest in the flora and fauna of the country around him with black and white photos and sketches. Philippa Johnson
Following the history on the Stinson Walk For bushwalkers keen to follow this important piece of Qld history, the Stinson Walk in Lamington National Park offers a rewarding blend of heritage, rainforest scenery and rugged terrain. Starting from Christmas Creek, this challenging 12km return walk typically takes 6-8 hours to complete, depending on fitness, track conditions and time spent exploring the historic sites along the route. The track follows the steep Westray's Grave Track before branching towards the Stinson Memorial crash site, where plaques commemorate those who lost their lives in the airliner disaster. A side trip to Westray's Grave is highly recommended. The walk passes through diverse subtropical rainforest, open forest and striking terrain features, including sections of easy rock scrambling and occasional opportunities for vine swinging. While little remains of the original wreckage, ongoing erosion, treefall and landslips have continued to impact the site, making it a destination worth visiting sooner rather than later. This is a demanding bushwalk requiring strong fitness and navigation skills. The initial climb is particularly steep and the route traverses rough, often overgrown terrain. Overnight camping is only permitted at the designated Stinson remote bush camp and requires a permit, with camping prohibited elsewhere along the track. Visit: aussiebushwalking.com.

The dog a community searched for When Noosa Hinterland resident Liz Stapleton received a call in July telling her that her beloved
18
Springer Spaniel Winston had gone missing while she was in Sydney, she immediately flew home. It didn't stay a solo search for long. Word travelled fast: neighbours who barely knew the Stapletons delivered flyers, strangers shared Winston's photo on social media, and local businesses put posters in their windows. The search became a community cause – dozens of people combing paddocks and bushland, united in the hope of bringing a favourite dog home. “We even used a thermal drone over bushland at night to look for signs of heat from animals,” said Liz. No one knew wild dogs moved through those same paddocks – it wasn't something anyone feared. The hinterland is home, the place where a dog might wander off and be found again, tail wagging and a little muddy. For 10 days, the search continued. What it uncovered isn’t really the point here – some endings are best left for grieving hearts. What stayed was the memory of how quickly people show up for a stranger’s grief, and how far they will walk for a dog they’ve never patted. “So many dog owners followed Winston's journey and reached out through Facebook. I wanted to say thank you to this special community,” said Liz. Determined to honour Winston's memory, Liz channelled her grief into a creative project. As a writer and artist, she teamed up with neighbour and publisher Jonette George, of independent publishing house Sunday Press. Liz met Jonette while they were both searching for Winston. The result is The Adventures of Winston and Maggie, a chapter book for young readers featuring 6 hinterland adventures shared by 2 cheeky spaniel siblings. Liz wrote and illustrated the book with 7 paintings and 9 drawings inspired by Winston. Proceeds from the book will support Sunshine Coast 4 Paws Animal Rescue, a volunteer-run charity that helps rehome homeless dogs and cats. Described by Jonette as “a coffee-table edition suitable for dog-loving adults and kids alike”, the special fabric-covered book is now available for pre-order through Sunday Press, with free pick-up available at Lake Macdonald or postage options available. Together we connected, shared ideas, and learned about the unique challenges faced by mothers in Papua New Guinea. We are now ready to do it again on 8 October from 4pm at QCWA Hall, 78 Memorial Dr, Eumundi. Come along to help us set up, pack kits, hear some exciting project milestones from the team, and enjoy time to mingle. Keen to see what else we do? The weekly Eumundi Rotary Club meeting begins right after at 6pm, and visitors are warmly welcome to stay. If you can’t make it, you can catch up on our updates in Issue 152 of the Eumundi Voice which hits the streets on the 15 October. Because of the wonderful volunteers and Friends of Kemobolo who “show up”, this project has gained incredible traction. Please give Janet a heads-up if you can attend by calling 0402 062 465 or email miltech@bigpond.com.
GARDENING
Celebrate Spring at Noosa Botanic Gardens Spring has arrived at the Noosa Botanic Gardens, and the Friends of the Noosa Botanic Gardens are inviting visitors to join their last free seasonal guided walk for the year on 11 October. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the gardens at their spring best. The sausage tree is expected to be in flower with its velvety dark red blooms on long stems, with fallen flowers often creating a colourful carpet along the pathways. Visitors can also enjoy the continuing display of grevilleas in bloom and may catch sight of the vibrant red flowers of the hippeastrums. The Shade Garden will be open, where the spectacular jade vine should be flowering along the fence line. Its cascading clusters of rare turquoise flowers are a highlight of the season and a favourite subject for photographers. The walk will finish here amongst the lush greenery of the palms and ferns. The walk commences at 8.30am from the large shelter shed opposite the entrance carpark. Visitors are encouraged to bring water, a hat and your camera. Visit: noosabotanicgardensfriends.com.

We continue to stay busy at Eumundi Police Station. For those who may not be aware, in addition to responding to calls for service, we are heavily involved with protracted investigations, proactive policing activities and community safety and engagement initiatives. We are glad to have Snr Constable Blair Doran back on deck. Many community members will know or have met Blair, who has been stationed at Eumundi since 2004. As Officer in Charge, I am extremely appreciative of the officers who work here. Everyone does their bit, works as a team, and is genuinely invested in keeping our community safe. During September, police executed a search warrant at an address in Eumundi in relation to drug offences. Several cannabis plants were located and seized. A 64yo female and a 45yo male have both been charged with several drug-related offences, including producing dangerous drugs. They are due in court in
22
October. Information leading to this matter was provided through Crimestoppers. If anyone has information regarding drug-related activity, please contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. Police also executed a search warrant at another Eumundi address as part of an investigation into the dangerous use of an e-bike. The investigation relates to a rider allegedly performing a wheel stand while travelling along the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Eumundi at night. The warrant resulted in the seizure of several pieces of evidence, including the e-bike involved. The matter remains under investigation, and a juvenile male will be dealt with in accordance with the Youth Justice Act. Throughout September, the Eumundi Division responded to 127 calls for service. The majority of these involved mental health and domestic violence related matters. Despite operating with 2 officers – Snr Constable McNeil and myself – we continued to conduct proactive road safety duties. During the month, we conducted 329 random breath tests, resulting in the detection of 2 drink drivers, while 5 drug drivers were also charged. Road safety remains everyone’s responsibility. The significant contributing factor to crashes and traffic offences continues to be driver behaviour – or should I say poor driver behaviour. We encourage all road users to make safe and responsible decisions every time they get behind the wheel. As always, please stay safe and look after yourself and loved ones. COUNCILLOR DIV 10 - CR DAVID LAW North Arm Park amenities renewal I'm pleased to share that construction is now underway on the new public amenities at North Arm Park on Monak Rd. The project will deliver modern, accessible facilities, including a new amenity building, connecting pathways, accessible parking and upgraded wastewater infrastructure. The existing amenities will be replaced as part of the works, providing a more functional and comfortable facility for park users. Weather permitting, the new amenities are expected to be ready for the community by early December 2026. Free Flood Resilience Design Guide One of the great things about living in the hinterland is being surrounded by our creeks, rivers and natural landscapes. While these waterways add to the character of our region, they also remind us of the importance of being prepared for flood and storm risks. To help homeowners and industry professionals make
informed decisions, council has released a new Flooding and Coastal Resilience Design Guide. This free guide will provide you with advice on designing and renovating homes to better withstand flooding and severe weather, helping reduce damage, recovery time and long-term costs. I encourage residents to take a look and learn how small design decisions can help reduce damage and recovery costs in the future. ART ABOUT
Window to the Soul exhibition Emerging artist Ellenie Faith Kirkman will present the outcomes of her 2025 artist residency at a special exhibition hosted by Tall Trees Art Inc at Noosa Hinterland Brewing in Cooran on 8 October from 5.30pm. The 19yo painter was awarded the residency after winning the opportunity at the 2025 Tall Trees Art Inc Art Exhibition. The residency was generously donated by Eumundi Guesthouse and BnB owners Suzie and David Campin. During a 10-day stay at the Eumundi property in February, Ellenie created a series of oilpainted portrait sketches of 11 sitters. She also photographed her subjects, allowing her to further develop the works after the residency. The October exhibition will feature works produced during the residency alongside a collection of new pieces completed since February. Visitors will also have the opportunity to hear Ellenie speak about her residency experience, artistic process and the paintings that evolved from the project. Among the highlights is a portrait of musician Andrea Kirwin, which has been selected for the prestigious Brisbane Portrait Prize. While the original painting will be on display in Brisbane, a print of the work will be exhibited at the brewery. The exhibition is open to everyone. Light refreshments will be provided, with drinks available for purchase from the bar.

LITERATURE The witch: Then and now The persecution of women in positions of authority as witches has a long history. This is the subject of local historian and author Debra Parish’s new book, Prophet and Witches: Witchcraft, Gender and Politics. Set in the turbulent context of 17thcentury civil war England, Debra’s book brings to life the stories of several hundred brave women who pushed boundaries as they claimed spiritual authority as visionary prophets. It was also a time of increased fear and persecution of witches. The danger for these outspoken women was that as spiritual instruments or prophets, they also risked being accused of witchcraft. The visionary trance, often lasting for weeks, days or months was crucial for establishing the female prophet’s spiritual authority and reputation. However, although several of these women achieved status and power for their visionary performances, less receptive audiences could accuse the prophet of channelling a demonic rather than a divine spirit and transform the prophet into a witch. As Debra’s fascinating book shows, this was the fate of the prophet Anna Trapnel who achieved fame and a reputation for her long ecstatic trances. This prophetess lay on a narrow bed in a small bed chamber at an inn at Whitehall in 1654 for 12 days and nights, moving between periods of silence, prophetic declaration and spiritual song. However, although she attracted large audiences and a following, she also met with resistance. When she travelled to Cornwall later that year to expand her prophetic activity, she was arrested and tried as a witch. Debra’s book tells the stories of some of these
28
bold women as she explores both the gender and political dimensions of witchcraft. But as the author notes, “The experiences of these women in history resonate in our current context. Strong, independent women to this day remain at risk of being labelled as witches”. But as Debra is quick to point out, “Women are also reclaiming the witch as a powerful symbol of female power and resistance”. Debra and her partner have recently moved to Eumundi, and she is enjoying settling into her new community, meeting with other writers while encountering strong local interest in the topic of witchcraft. “I feel so fortunate to live in such a beautiful environment and vibrant community. I had a wonderful time at the recent Eumundi Writers Festival, such a unique opportunity to hear the words of so many talented authors and engage in stimulating discussions in a friendly, community environment. I enjoyed reading from my book at the Troubadour open mic hosted by the Eumundi Coffee Roasters and the great coffee after!” Debra’s new book is a culmination of 30yrs of researching and writing about women’s history, prophecy and witchcraft. She has presented on these topics at several conferences in Australia and abroad including London, Oxford and Cambridge universities and as an invited guest at the Museum of Witchcraft in Cornwall, England. FIRST AID
Snake bite first aid Australia is home to 20 of the world's 25 most venomous snakes. Yet in more than 90% of suspected snakebite cases, people turn out to have been bitten by a non-venomous snake, received a dry bite with no venom injected, or weren't bitten by a snake at all. Most bites happen when people try to capture or kill a snake themselves – left alone, a snake presents little to no danger. Don't try to move it. Leave it be or call your local snake catcher. What do you do if you've been bitten, or suspect you've been bitten by a snake? The first aid method is Pressure Immobilisation Technique (PIT). Lay the person down and keep them completely still. Starting at the fingers or toes of the bitten limb, apply a broad pressure bandage as firm as you'd wrap a sprained ankle, then continue wrapping upward, covering as much of the limb as possible. Splint the limb to restrict
movement and keep both the person and the limb still until help arrives. Call 000 immediately. I'm always surprised that a typical first aid kit doesn't contain snake bite bandages. A good snake bite kit should have a visual guide with instructions, 2 pressure bandages with indicator squares (so you can see if you've applied enough pressure), and a splint to immobilise the limb. Your local camping store and some pharmacies will most likely stock one, or you can find them online. It's one of the easiest gaps to fix, and one of the most useful things you can have in your home and vehicle. There's actually only one antivenom needed to treat any venomous snake bite in Australia – polyvalent antivenom. It's what our local emergency department stocks, since it covers every major species without needing to identify the exact snake first. Interestingly, it turns out Indigenous Australians were already onto something – the Jaanga people of inland Qld traditionally laid a snake bite victim down under a tree and kept them completely still for days, letting their community bring food and water. Long before PIT had a name, they'd worked out that stillness saves lives. What not to do matters just as much: don't cut the bite, don't wash or suck it, don't use a tourniquet, and don't try to kill the snake – hospitals don't need it to treat you. Book into one of your local First Aid courses to learn more lifesaving skills. Free printable first aid resources are available at queenofheartstraining. com.au/resources. ON THIS DAY
High Court of Australia The first sitting of the High Court of Australia took place in Melbourne on 6 October 1903. The idea of a federal supreme court was raised during the Constitutional Conventions of the 1890s, where it was proposed that the court could hear appeals from state supreme courts, with appeals to the Privy Council only occurring with the assent of the British monarch. The Privy Council is a formal body of advisers to the sovereign of the United Kingdom. There was considerable concern about the proposed court replacing the Privy Council. Subsidiaries of British companies wanted to continue to operate under the jurisdiction of British courts. Others argued that Australian judges were of a poorer quality than British, and that operating without the oversight of the Privy Council would jeopardise the legal system. Privy Council appeals remained a sticking point for decades. It was not until The Australia Act 1986 (UK) and its companion Commonwealth and state Acts, that appeals to the Privy Council from Australian courts finally came to an end. From then on, decisions of the High Court became binding on all other courts throughout Australia. Rhonda Piggott
