WRITERS’ DELIGHT

The second annual Eumundi Writers’ Festival has been hailed a great success, drawing writers, book lovers and visitors to town for the 3-day event from 4-6 September.

The festival opened with a celebration at Berkelouw Books where dignitaries, authors, artists, volunteers and supporters gathered for an evening focused on storytelling, connection and the human condition.

The opening event began with a Welcome to Country by Zeke Davies, who shared stories about the origins of Sunshine Coast place names and

explained how understanding Indigenous names can deepen connection to Country.

Local artist Ellenie Faith-Kirkman discussed the painting she created that was used for the festival’s promotional material, describing it as a work centred on hope. She said emotions such as joy, love and loss connect people across cultures and places, and that creative expression through words, painting, music or oral storytelling can reveal shared threads of humanity.

connect people to the soul Cont. from p1 of a place and can leave a lasting impact whether told on a page, canvas or through music. She also acknowledged the writers, poets, artists, organisers and volunteers who helped bring the event together.

Among the weekend highlights was an inconversation session with former Eumundi schoolboy Kevin Rudd, who later became Australian Prime Minister and Ambassador to the US. Interviewed by Clancy Overell at the packed Imperial Hotel Brewery, Kevin reflected on his childhood, early political career and meetings with world leaders, including his first meeting with Donald Trump.

The festival also proved popular with emerging writers, who drew inspiration from established authors and online international guests, gaining ideas for journals, novels and short stories. Many attendees were first-time visitors to Eumundi.

Authors and journalists shared advice on avoiding common pitfalls, getting published and seeking mentoring through the Qld Writers’ Centre.

At the Literary Lounge at Eats, authors presented

and discussed their latest work with readers. Many featured events and workshops sold out, while free sessions included the Short Story and Poetry competition awards presented by Professor Roly Sussex.

Festival Director Dr Suzanne Campin and her husband David thanked sponsors and volunteers for helping the festival run smoothly. Dr Campin said she hoped the event would become part of the Horizon Festival program next year.

Newer Documents, 2026 Newer Documents, 2026 brings contemporary Australian documentary photography to Noosa Regional Gallery from 19 September to 22 November. Featuring work by Tommy Backus, James Bugg, Renata Filippi, Kim Guthrie and Susan Mountford, the exhibition invites audiences to look more closely at the world around them. Noosa Men’s Shed Open Day Discover what goes on at Noosa Men’s Shed when it opens its doors for an open day from 10.30am on 3 October. Visitors can learn about the wide range of activities on offer, including woodworking, metalwork, art, beekeeping, gardening, music from 4 Shed bands, health, construction and hydroponics. You may already have met members at Noosa Council’s free Repair Days in recent months, where they helped repair furniture that might otherwise have ended up in landfill. The Hinterland Craft Beer Festival returns to The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on 10 October from 12-8pm. Featuring a line-up of local brews, the festival will be set up behind the hotel with live music, street food trucks and games. Cocktails, spirits, ciders and non-alcoholic options will also be available. Keep an eye on the website for details of which local brewers are participating.

AusCycling National Championships North Arm and Yandina will host the AusCycling Masters & Juniors Road Cycling National Championships from 17-20 September, bringing some of Australia’s youngest and most experienced riders to local roads. Competitors will include juniors as young as 13, with some lining up for their first national championship.

Giro d’Italia winner Jai Hindley and Tour de France stage winner Caleb Ewan both competed at these championships as juniors.

Local road closures will be in place during the event. On 17 September, the North Arm to Yandina route will be closed from 9am-2.30pm.

Figure & Face Exhibition Buderim Craft Cottage’s Figure and Face Life Drawing and Portraiture Exhibition will be on show from 24-27 September at the Atrium Gallery, 5 Main St, Buderim. The exhibition features work by local artists, including award-winning artists Dee Roy and Dianne Downs. Open House at the Majestic Theatre Step inside the 105yo Majestic Theatre in Pomona for a behind-the-scenes tour on 24 October as it opens its doors for Sunshine Coast Open House.

At 12noon enjoy a free silent film screening accompanied by Chris Rose on the 1937 Compton Organ. Tinbeerwah Art Group Exhibition The artwork of around 40 talented members of the Tinbeerwah Art Group will be on show at Tinbeerwah Hall from 18-20 September.

This year artists have developed their work under the watchful eyes of tutors and prominent artist/ educators Pam Miller, Fiona Groom and Paulus Kooi. The annual show provides visitors with the opportunity to meet and chat with the artists and to purchase artwork at very reasonable prices.

Enjoy light refreshments at the Gala Opening on 18 September from 5.30-7.30pm. This year 5% of the proceeds will be donated to The Thursday Girls Noosa – a registered charity helping local students in need. Smoked Festival Tickets go on sale on 2 October for Smoked Festival – Qld’s largest barbecue, music and lifestyle festival. The festival will make its Sunshine Coast debut at Nambour Showgrounds on 19&20 March 2027.

Originating in Rockhampton, the festival has become a fixture on the Central Qld calendar, celebrating low-and-slow pitmasters, live music, craft beer and bar pop-ups, cooking demonstrations, competitions, markets and entertainment. An evening with Monica McInerney Join Noosa Libraries for an evening with muchloved Australian storyteller Monica McInerney as she discusses her latest novel, When Sullivan Met Lola. A bigger bite out of budgets Dog owners in the Sunshine Coast Shire Council area will face a sharp rise in pet registration costs under Sunshine Coast Council’s (SCC) 2026-27 fees and charges, with the annual cost of registering a desexed dog set to more than double. The fee will increase from $30 to $63, which equates to about 110%.

The new charge places SCC above neighbouring Noosa Shire Council, where the 2026-27 annual registration fee for a desexed dog is listed at $55.

While the difference between the 2 councils is $8/ year, the increase has attracted attention because Sunshine Coast’s previous fee was substantially lower than Noosa’s.

The rise comes as many households continue to manage higher everyday costs, with the steeper registration fee taking a bigger bite out of the annual budgets of pet owners across the region.

SCC reviews animal registration fees each year through its budget and fees and charges process.

According to council, the latest review found previous fees were not covering the full cost of providing animal management services, with the updated charges intended to help maintain those services sustainably.

Registration fees help fund services including lost pet reunification, responses to roaming animals and dog attacks, animal management patrols, compliance activities and the operation of the Sippy Creek Animal Pound.

SCC says registration revenue also supports community education programs on responsible pet ownership, dog bite prevention initiatives in schools and kindergartens, pop-up information events, signage in public open spaces and partnerships with animal welfare organisations.

Cat owners are also required to register their pets with council each year, while SCC continues 12

to offer lifetime registration for desexed and microchipped cats. Cat registration fees remain unchanged at $43 for a desexed cat and $46 for an entire cat.

Under Qld’s animal management laws dog registrations must be renewed annually. The Sunshine Coast registration period runs from 1 October to 30 September the following year. All annual renewals must be paid by 30 September.

Volunteer expo Noosa residents interested in giving back, learning new skills or connecting with local causes are invited to the inaugural Noosa Volunteers Connect Expo this month.

The free community event will be held at the Noosa Leisure Centre on 26 September from 10am-2pm, bringing together more than 50 local not-for-profit organisations seeking volunteers.

Noosa Council’s Community Connection Manager Alison Hamblin said the expo would make it easier for people to find meaningful ways to contribute while supporting groups that rely on volunteer help.

“If you’ve been thinking about volunteering, whether it’s to give back, meet people, learn something new or support a cause you care about, this is a great place to start,” said Alison.

Local volunteers say the benefits can be life changing. Noosa teenager Gracie Springer joined the SES while in Yr12 and said the experience helped her choose a career path as a firefighter.

“I’ve gained more confidence and learnt more about teamwork. It’s been so rewarding being able to help my community,” said Gracie.

Noosa Men’s Shed volunteer Michael Barrington said volunteering had helped him build practical skills, friendships and a stronger connection to the community.

“Just give it a go. You can get involved as much or as little as suits you,” he said.

Visitors will be able to speak directly with volunteer coordinators, learn about available roles and register their interest or begin onboarding on the day.

New e-bike rules Following on from a previous article in Eumundi Voice – The e-bike debate – the Qld Government has now introduced new rules aimed at curbing dangerous behaviour and reducing the risks posed by illegal or high-powered e-bikes. After many community complaints, particularly about young children riding the more dangerous models, the focus is clearly on stopping behaviour that puts lives at risk.

The changes have been introduced in stages.

From 1 July 2026 new rules applied to the bikes themselves, including requirements around power output, pedal assistance and speed.

Further rules commenced from 31 August 2026, focusing more on who can ride, age limits, licence requirements and available exemptions.

The main rule is that riders of e-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards and e-unicycles must now be at least 16yo and hold a valid licence, with a learner licence being the minimum requirement.

There are some important exemptions. These include: People with eligible medical conditions or disabilities; Riding in designated recreational areas, such as rail trails, mountain bike trails and private off-road cycling facilities; and Those aged 12-17 must ride under the supervision of a parent or caregiver. For those aged 16 and 17 who do not yet hold a learner licence, supervision is also required, and the 14

supervising adult must be close enough to give instructions.

There is also a 3-month grace period ending on 30 November, to allow time for eligible riders to obtain medical exemption documentation.

In practical terms the new laws mean: Police can confiscate and destroy illegal machines; Police can conduct random breath testing on riders of e-bikes, e-scooters and other mobility devices; Devices that can exceed 25 km/h are now banned; A 12 km/h speed limit now applies on footpaths; Some e-devices can be ridden on roads with a speed limit of up to 60 km/h, but riders must still keep to a maximum of 25 km/h; Higher penalties now apply for infringements; and Parents may be fined if children under 16 ride illegally.

Overall, these new laws appear to have been introduced after considerable community engagement and with a good dose of common sense. Hopefully, they will lead to fewer frightening incidents and, most importantly, fewer children being seriously injured or killed.

Volunteers perspectives For our 150th issue of Eumundi Voice, we thought it only fair to reveal the true machinery behind this great little magazine. Yes there are writers, editors, proofreaders, designers, advertisers and deliverers. But as any honest volunteer will admit, the whole operation depends on dogs, coffee, sturdy shoes, forgiving letterboxes, comma placement, and the occasional well-timed lie about split personalities.

Readers may not have noticed, but our “canine correspondents” have ensured a dog has appeared in every one of our 150 issues. This is not coincidence – it is policy. Charlie the dog has graced the pages several times, while less fortunate mutt colleagues have been demoted to tiny specks in distant paddocks. Such is the brutal world of publishing!

Make no mistake: the dogs are the true force behind the magazine. They sit under desks and tables, heavily supervising writers, proofreaders and editors. When we see our humans staring blankly at a screen, we do our civic duty – enticing them outside for a frantic frolic to give those human brains a re-energising break.

They also train the delivery team by barking from behind fences and conducting letterbox security checks. After 6yrs of whistling and calling them “good dogs”, Mick Barton says even the fiercest fence-runners now sit, smile and wag their tails.

This is either excellent community engagement or proof that Eumundi Voice has negotiated peace with the local dog population.

Charlie would like formal acknowledgment of these essential canine duties, preferably via a thumbs up on Eumundi Voice social media pages.

However, dog biscuits will also be accepted.

Of course, human volunteers also help. Every second Thursday, Greg Ison collects and distributes 360 copies sorted by the legendary John Broadbent at the Eumundi Community Gardens. However, if delivery runs late there can be consequences. Greg reports that if this occurs, he will probably encounter the 2 ladies who wait beside their letterbox to tell him in no uncertain terms, “You’re late!”

Then there are uniform complications. Les Godwin once delivered more than 400 magazines around Doonan wearing a Rotary shirt and AFL Lions hat, confusing householders about whether he represented Rotary, Lions, football, or all 3! Eventually he explained, “I have a split personality.” It was quicker, and possibly accurate after 400 letterbox deliveries.

The adventures continue in Rafter Country, where Judy Dawson and Jane Stephens hike the streets meeting new residents, farewelling old ones, and once finding an echidna feasting on ants at the base of a Lilly Pilly Rise letterbox. Not every magazine can claim wildlife review before delivery.

At the Writers Group meeting, the miracle of creation begins in earnest. Ideas ricochet around the room, 8 conversations somehow unfold at once. By the end, against all logic and several laws of physics, the beginnings of another issue have appeared – soon to be professionally laid out and filled with brilliant articles.

Behind the scenes Heidi Jenkins faces the eternal design challenge – fitting everything in, including dog placement. Every issue arrives with more stories, notices, photos and community treasures than seem physically possible. Somehow it all finds a place.

Then come our dedicated proofreaders – Bronwen Pearson, Philippa Johnson, Ruth Hickey and Joyce Turnbull – who patrol the pages armed with red pens, sharp eyes and strong opinions about comma placement. They debate spelling, punctuation and whether a sentence has wandered off without a licence.

Ruth Hickey has been part of the Eumundi Voice story since Issue 1 as editor, writer, proofreader and board member. For her, the team at

Eumundi Voice and Eumundi Rotary have offered friendship, creativity and community. She looks forward to continuing to share local stories, promote businesses and provide not-for-profit groups with much-needed donations so they continue to thrive.

For Eileen Walder, Eumundi Voice keeps her connected to the people, happenings and history of the place she has called home for 50yrs. That is the heart of it: a magazine stitched together by volunteers, delivered by walkers, drivers and dog negotiators, read in homes, shops, vet clinics and coffee spots, and carried beyond town online.

Joyce Turnbull recalls the beginnings of Eumundi Voice in July 2020, when nearly 100 locals gathered at the Eumundi School of Arts to consider what “little Eumundi” needed after Covid disruptions and the loss of regular regional newspapers. A commercial publication was unlikely to survive on goodwill alone, so Eumundi Rotary asked whether volunteers could help fill the gap. The answer, as 150 issues now show, has been learning, local support, willing writers, loyal readers and a magazine proudly shared near and far.

So happy 150th issue to everyone who writes, edits, advertises, designs, proofreads, bundles, delivers, reads, waves, waits by letterboxes, smiles at the vet clinic, or barks important announcements from behind a fence. We plan to keep the Eumundi Voice issues coming – and Charlie has already volunteered to supervise the next 150.

Popina marks 5 delicious years Popina celebrated its 5th birthday at the beginning of September, marking 5yrs of creating amazing meals and helping make Eumundi's dining scene a little more special.

Since opening its doors in 2021, the paddockto-plate restaurant has built a loyal following, showcasing fresh local produce, and creating a welcoming space where locals and visitors can gather around good food and good company.

The restaurant continues to champion Sunshine Coast and hinterland ingredients, with menus that evolve alongside the seasons.

Owners Alex and Penny say the milestone is about more than just reaching 5yrs in business.

"We're incredibly grateful for the support we've received from the Eumundi community. Watching people celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions at Popina over the years has been really rewarding."

They also credit local growers, suppliers and their dedicated team for helping shape Popina's success.

"From day one, we've wanted to create a dining experience that showcases the amazing produce available in our region. We're proud of what we've built and excited about what's still to come."

In an industry known for its challenges, reaching 5yrs is a significant achievement. For many locals, Popina has become more than a restaurant; it is a place to connect, celebrate and enjoy the flavours of the region.

40 under 40 Awards Congratulations to the winners of InDaily’s 40 under 40 Awards which recognise the achievements of Qld’s young business innovators and leaders. Two Sunshine Coast locals were amongst those chosen.

Alex Thompson-Welch of Eastwell Farms at Kin Kin won the Emerging Industries Award for harnessing technology and taking the family farm to the next phase of innovation. Drawing on his background in IT, Alex is setting up a 24/7 selfservice produce hub and AgriLoop – a technology platform designed to connect farmers, restaurants and consumers while transforming local food distribution.

Augusta Puttkammer, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Happy Pops, won the Food Innovation Award. Trained as a chef, Augusta created allnatural handcrafted artisanal gelato and sorbet pops from her base in Hastings St, Noosa.

Established in 2018, Augusta made every single Happy Pop herself. More stores have opened since, but all Happy Pops remain handmade.

Lacewing eggs

Before you reach for the ant bait Recent publicity about fire ants has understandably made many Sunshine Coast residents more watchful. However, vigilance should not turn into a war on every ant or every unfamiliar little insect in our gardens. Our gardens are home to an extraordinary, largely unseen workforce of beneficial insects. Some are so tiny that most of us never notice them.

Take the green lacewing. Its eggs look like tiny white dots suspended on almost impossibly fine stalks beneath leaves. When they hatch, the larvae

may be only 1-2mm long. They look nothing like the delicate green adult. Yet these little predators attack aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, mites, thrips, caterpillars and insect eggs. Qld Government information records lacewings consuming as many as 60 aphids in an hour.

Then there are our ladybirds. Their young are often black, elongated and rather fierce-looking – nothing like the familiar round red beetle they will become. Both adult and larval ladybirds are voracious predators of aphids, scale, mites, whiteflies and other plant pests. What may look like an unwanted “bug” could actually be protecting your garden.

Native ants deserve the same consideration.

Australia has an enormous diversity of ants performing very different ecological jobs. Some hunt caterpillars and other insects, move seeds and recycle organic material.

Importantly there is Australian research showing that our native ants can also provide resistance to invading fire ants. A Qld DPI paper by researchers Shane Moloney and Cas Vanderwoude found that established native ants can compete with

young fire-ant colonies for resources and can kill newly founded fire-ant queens, slowing their advance. The authors reported “substantial biotic resistance” from Australian native ants along fireant invasion fronts.

Not every native ant is beneficial in every situation – some protect aphids and scale for their honeydew – but that is precisely the point: ecosystems are complex. Removing one group of insects can have consequences for many others.

There is also an important warning about blanket chemical treatment from the Australian Government's own environment department.

Its information on fire ants states that chemical control is not specific to fire ants and can affect other invertebrates. It also warns that fire ants are effective recolonisers and can rapidly recolonise previously poisoned areas when the natural obstacles to their establishment have been removed.

In other words, killing the existing insect community does not necessarily leave an area better protected from fire ants. It may remove some of the very competition that makes it

harder for a new invasive colony to establish.

So perhaps the most useful message for local gardeners is a simple one: Look first. Identify Brown lacewing larva stalking aphids second. Treat only when necessary.

Fire ants have distinctive characteristics, and suspected nests should be identified by your local licensed pest controller rather than assuming every unfamiliar ant is a fire ant.

Protecting our community from an invasive species and protecting our native biodiversity are not opposing goals. We need to do both. There are also environmentally friendly options such as hot water injection for ant nests.

Sometimes the tiny creature we are about to kill is the very one quietly keeping our garden healthy.

Every farmer has a story Matt Golinski is well known on the Sunshine Coast as a chef who is a passionate promoter of fresh, seasonal produce. Whether he is cooking at a “foodie” event such as GourMay Mary Valley or hosting a dinner at Kandanga Farm Store, Matt makes a point of sharing the story behind each ingredient. For him, connecting diners with the farmer behind the food on their plates is one of the main reasons he keeps such a busy schedule.

For small-scale producers, finding a place in the market can be difficult. Rising costs, long hours and unpredictable weather all add to the

challenge. Some, including Mary Valley Country Harvest, work together through co-operatives and sell online and at local markets. Others look for distinctive ways to stand out, such as Noosa Black Garlic with its oils, preserves and honey, or Eastwell Farms with its regenerative approach to beef and mushrooms. Lindols Macadamias have diversified by combining farming with café culture and agritourism. Matt says producers take enormous pride in their work, a sentiment captured by Alex from Eastwell Farms who said, “The thing that gets us up each morning is the knowledge we are bringing food to the plates of our customers exactly as nature intended it.”

Matt said people increasingly want to know where their food comes from, whether they are cooking at home or eating out. “This year’s GourMay Mary Valley included a bus trip to 4 local farms. Tickets sold out quickly and participants loved having that direct access to the farmers.”

The Curated Plate and Noosa Food & Wine festivals have also highlighted the personal relationships that grow between chefs and producers. Matt said those connections often leave the strongest impression on diners. “At a dinner event, if I talk about where the capers I used in a dish came from, who grew them and that they were hand-picked, that is the part of the evening that people remember, rather than the dish I created.” For Matt, it comes back to a simple purpose: connecting people with producers, and producers with the people who enjoy their food.

ENVIRONMENT Powering up Noosa When the volunteer team from Zero Emissions Noosa (ZEN) recently spoke to Eumundi Rotary members, they proved excellent guides for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the fastchanging world of renewable energy options.

Their core message to the community was simple: there are free ways to maximise your energy savings simply by understanding how you consume power, because there is no "one size fits all" solution. ZEN highlighted the free EnergyFlex app as a brilliant tool to map out a solution tailored to each specific lifestyle, budget and future plans.

The team also demystified electric vehicles (EVs), diving into the different types on the market, the exciting potential for EVs to act as mobile storage batteries for the home, and the practicalities of recharging.

Perhaps the most exciting buzz in the room revolved around the Noosa E-Bike Library. Many

The view from eight feet high Balancing magic, memory, and motherhood, Sunshine Coast performer Leonie Deavin has spent nearly 3 decades turning dance, stiltwalking and fabulous costuming into a family legacy now shared across 3 generations.

If you look up during a local festival you might catch a glimpse of Leonie Deavin. Standing 8 feet tall (approximately 2.4m) in vibrant sequins and carnival silks she is hard to miss. But for Leonie – founder of Nova Star Productions – stilts are merely a vehicle. Her true medium is creating a space for shared playfulness between strangers.

For 30yrs Leonie has viewed the world from this unusual vantage point. Since learning to walk on stilts in Darwin in 1996 her career has taken her to grand stages, from dancing with Leo Sayer to weaving through crowds at the Australian Open.

Yet she prefers performing to children at the Royal Children’s Hospital or visitors at community festivals.

To Leonie costumes are not enough – the real work is in connection. Through improvisation and dance she helps people light up. Shy children reach out and adults enter a different world. This mission – creating magical moments – remains captured in her original slogan.

Recently that joy has taken on a deeper generational meaning. Leonie’s daughter grew up in a home defined by colourful chaos and costumes. At age 13 she began following in her mother’s footsteps. Today at 22, she stands beside 24

Father’s Day Breakfast brings community together Members of the P&C, Rotary Club of Eumundi and The Journeymen were out and about at the annual Eumundi State School Father’s Day Breakfast, helping to make the morning a memorable occasion for local dads and father figures ahead of Father’s Day on 6 September.

The popular community event provided an opportunity for families to come together, share breakfast and celebrate the important role fathers and father figures play in the lives of children.

With the support of dedicated volunteers, the morning was filled with conversation, connection and community spirit.

A special thank you goes to Chappy Sam, who coordinates the event each year. Through Sam’s commitment and the support of local organisations and volunteers, families are given the chance to strengthen connections with their loved ones while building relationships within the wider community.

Amy’s vibrant, memory-driven paintings capture the beauty of wild landscapes through rich textures and layered detail, while Adam’s intricate stitched works are inspired by the subtle patterns and colours found in nature. Both artists offered a fascinating insight into their creative processes, from Amy’s practice of working across multiple canvases simultaneously to Adam’s unique blend of machine and hand stitching. The exhibition explores the interconnected relationships between flora, landscapes, oceans and light, creating a stunning visual dialogue between the 2 artists.

EUMUNDI ROTARY CLUB

Strong support for Kemabolo Project The Kemabolo project continues to gain momentum, with growing support from both individuals and organisations.

Since the Birthing Kit Workshop last month and the launch of the Friends of Kemabolo Facebook page, community interest has increased significantly. Several Rotary clubs have requested presentations and indicated they would like to contribute to the project in various ways. To help manage this support effectively, the project has been divided into stages, based on priority needs and available funding.

Stage 1 is underway and focuses on freight, logistics and improvements to the Kemabolo Aid Post. This includes the shipment of birthing kits and associated supplies, along with the purchase of essential equipment such as saline drip stands, improved lighting, clean birthing mattresses, and a desk and chair for nurse Joanne.

upgrades and the planning phase for a sheltered waiting area where women and children can sit comfortably and safely out of the weather while awaiting treatment.

We are delighted to report that a very generous donor has fully funded Stage 1. This means work can begin immediately, and improvements are already starting to take shape. As each component is completed, we will provide progress updates to keep supporters informed.

Our next update will outline Stage 2 of the project, which includes the construction of the patient shelter adjacent to the aid post. Plans also include solar and lighting improvements, as well as the installation of composting toilets.

The excitement surrounding this project has galvanised the entire village and is already having a tangible impact on people's lives.

Recently Nurse Joanne saved the life of a young boy who had suffered a snake bite. We are also seeing more women seeking assistance at the aid post rather than attempting to manage childbirth without medical support.

Meanwhile Eumundi Rotarian Kilagi Nielsen has been in the village caring for her seriously ill brother. During her time there, we asked her to establish a small community committee consisting of 3-4 influential village members. The community committee will work alongside our project team throughout the project, keeping the villagers informed of progress. This committee has now been established. In our next update, we will introduce its members and explain the important

role they will play in the project’s future.

Rotary membership evening a success The Rotary Club of Eumundi’s Membership Information Evening on 10 September was a successful and informative event, attracting community members keen to learn more about Rotary and the opportunities it provides to serve both local and international communities.

Guests had the opportunity to meet club members, learn about Rotary’s commitment to service, fellowship and community engagement,

and discover how their own skills and experience could contribute to making a positive difference.

The evening showcased a range of Rotary initiatives, from local community projects to international humanitarian and development programs, all within a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

A highlight of the evening was the lineup of guest speakers. Sgt Nic Van Der Matt shared his experiences as a local police officer and spoke about the valuable role service clubs play in strengthening communities, often working alongside government agencies and community organisations to achieve positive outcomes.

Former Rotary Youth Leadership Awards participant Julie Dare and past Rotary Exchange student Kathryn Taylor – whose presentation was read by Mick Barton – reflected on their Rotary experiences and the profound impact those opportunities had on their personal growth, confidence and life direction.

The evening reinforced Rotary’s enduring motto “Service Above Self” and demonstrated how Rotary continues to create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, contribute and make a meaningful difference in their communities.

Experiences of RYPEN students On May 15-17 this year we had an amazing opportunity to attend the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) camp in Lennox Heads, NSW. It was an incredible weekend where we met many amazing people our age, built meaningful connections, and developed valuable life skills.

The RYPEN program was recommended by a teacher at our school, St Teresa’s Catholic College.

Before applying, we didn’t know much about the program, but it seemed to be extremely beneficial for teenagers, and it certainly exceeded our expectations. The camp was a fun and unique way to meet different people and learn new leadership skills.

Throughout the weekend, there were many activities from guest speakers to team activities and connection building. The volunteers looking after us were incredible people that were always looking to promote positivity, inclusion and encourage confidence. Activities included karaoke, trivia night, relays and team building exercises, allowing us to make many new connections.

The experience left us with many benefits. As a result, we developed better confidence when speaking in front of people and groups, as well as learning about the positives and negatives that can arise in relationships. Furthermore, we learnt many usable and effective leadership skills and how to connect and relate with strangers.

RYPEN is an experience that we will never forget.

We made many new friends that we are still in contact with and learnt skills that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. We would recommend and encourage other young people to apply for the RYPEN program next year. It’s an amazing experience that you truly cannot miss out on.

Eumundi student wins drawing competition A talented Yr3 student from Eumundi State School has been crowned the winner of this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Week drawing competition.

Students from across the Sunshine Coast were invited to answer a simple but inspiring question: “What’s the most beautiful place on the Sunshine Coast?” The competition attracted hundreds of colourful and creative entries, showcasing the region’s natural beauty through the eyes of local children.

After carefully reviewing the submissions, with judging assistance from Sharon and Anne of the Coolum Art Collective, Jude Hardy was awarded first prize for an outstanding drawing of Mt Coolum.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien congratulated Jude on the winning artwork

and praised all students who participated in the competition.

“Seeing the Sunshine Coast through the eyes of our young people was inspiring. The creativity, effort and appreciation for our region’s natural beauty on display in the entries were truly remarkable,” said Ted. The drawings submitted by the finalists will be showcased at the Coolum Art Collective’s Spring Art Exhibition on 25 September, giving the community an opportunity to enjoy the impressive artwork and celebrate the talent of local students.

Pomona Emerging Artists Prize Artist Mary Zouglakis has been named the winner of the inaugural Pomona Railway Station Local Emerging Artists Prize for her painting Coffee Time Reflections. Mary received the $2,000 major prize sponsored by Noosa Hinterland Real Estate at the conclusion of the highly successful exhibition celebrating emerging artistic talent from across the region.

Judges Michael Brennan, Director of Noosa Regional Gallery, and local artist and art educator Pam Miller, faced the difficult task of selecting

the winners from 45 exhibited works.

The finalists were drawn from around 100 artists, all living within a 50km radius of Pomona, highlighting the depth of creative L-R Lisa Mitchell & Mary Zouglakis talent in the Noosa hinterland and surrounding districts.

Support for emerging artists was also recognised through the Encouragement Award, presented to Lisa Mitchell for her work Still Seeing/Reflect. The award carried $1,000 in prize money generously provided by Eumundi Voice in partnership with Eumundi Rotary, demonstrating their commitment to fostering and promoting local creative talent. The sponsorship helped ensure emerging artists received both recognition and financial encouragement as they continue to develop their artistic practice.

The Emerging Artists Prize formed part of the Pomona Railway Station Gallery's 25th anniversary celebrations. Local businesses collectively contributed more than $4,000 in cash and prizes, underscoring the strong community support behind the initiative.

The exhibition remains on display in the Pomona Railway Station Gallery's Carriage and Signal Rooms until 23 September.

Dancing Queen turns 50 It’s 50yrs since ABBA released Dancing Queen as the lead single from their 4th album, Arrival.

Dancing Queen reached number 1 in 15 countries including Australia, and was the only number 1 hit for ABBA in the USA. Five decades later you can still hear Dancing Queen on the airwaves, at karaoke parties, Mardi Gras celebrations and wedding receptions.

ABBA formed in Sweden in 1972 but came to attention outside of their home country when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with Waterloo. Strangely, the stigma of winning Eurovision made it difficult for ABBA to be taken seriously. Mamma Mia, from their third album, returned them to the UK number 1 spot, and was number 1 for 10 weeks in Australia. December 1977 saw the release of ABBA: The Album, their 5th album, which included the hits The Name of the Game and Take a Chance on Me. The hits kept coming, but in 1982 the group took a temporary break. A decade passed before the greatest hits album ABBA Gold and a quirky 1994 Australian film Muriel’s Wedding revived a nostalgic yearning for ABBA’s songs. The musical Mamma Mia! premiered in London in 1999 and continues to tour the world. Almost 40yrs after their temporary break, the group released their 9th album Voyage in 2021. In 2025 Dancing Queen reached 1B views on YouTube.
