Shakuhachi Masters Concert Experience the haunting sound of the shakuhachi when the Shakuhachi Masters Concert comes to Eumundi School of Arts Hall on 5 September, from 6.30-8pm. Japanese masters Furuya Teruo, Kazushi Matama, Kaoru Kakizakai and Saki Imoto will perform alongside Australian players including Riley Lee, with special guest Takako Nishibori on traditional koto. Great Noosa Trail Walk The Great Noosa Trail Walk will take place over the long weekend of 3-5 October across the Noosa Hinterland. This is a 3-day self-guided 56km walk to be enjoyed at your own pace. On day 1 walkers start at Cooroy and walk 20 km to Kin Kin. Day 2 covers 24km from Kin Kin to Cooran, and day 3 covers 10km finishing at Pomona. A 1-day hike option is available for those wanting a shorter experience. SunnyKids Mayoral Ball Tickets are on sale now for the 2026 SunnyKids Mayoral Ball on 17 October at the Machjet International Hangar at the Sunshine Coast Airport.

The ball aims to raise funds in support of the SunnyKids’ Transitional Housing Project, helping families move from crisis towards safe, stable and independent futures. Cooroy Spring Orchid Show Orchid lovers and fans of ferns and foliage plants can enjoy a colourful display when the annual Spring Orchid Show returns to Cooroy Memorial Hall from 8.30am-4pm on 18 September and 8.30am-1pm on 19 September. Presented by members of the Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society, the show will feature spectacular flowers, prize-winning plants and expert advice from experienced growers. Hands-on orchid potting workshops will run both days giving visitors the chance to pot an orchid to take home for $10.

Finnegan the Fart Detective Finnegan the Fart Detective comes to The Event Centre in Caloundra just in time for the school holidays with 3 shows on 24 September.

Recommended for children aged 6-12, this interactive adventure is part radio, part theatrical mystery. Audiences slip on Silent Disco headphones and are immersed in 3D audio.

Detective Finnegan and his sidekick Hamlet are on the trail of a mysterious smell and question a cast of quirky suspects along the way. Playwright Lachlan Woods created the idea for his nieces and nephews during Covid.

Events Centre Producer Emma Anderson said, “What we really love is how this show sparks children’s imaginations. It’s inventive, interactive and absolutely hilarious.”

Big Love Festival A 3-day Big Love Festival will take place at Eudlo from 11-13 September as a celebration of Tibetan Buddhist teachings. Explore practices, traditions and experiences that nourish the body, open the mind and create space for connection – from yoga and meditation to Dharma teachings, Tibetan culture, live music, art and creative workshops.

The festival is hosted by the Chenrezig Institute, the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre in Australia which opened on the Sunshine Coast in 1974. At this year’s festival listen to the Gyudmed Tantric Monastery monks perform Lion’s Roar chanting each evening. Performers include Andrea Kirwin, Tenzin Choegyal and Josh Lovegrove. Salty Saturdays Salty Saturdays return to Coolum Beach from 12 September, bringing Jack Morgan Park to life from 3-8pm with free live music, dancing, street food, market stalls, lawn games and kids’ activities. Gympie Stamp Fair The annual Gympie Stamp Fair returns on 20 September from 9am-2pm at the Indoor Bowls Hall, 35 Graham St, Gympie.

Stamp clubs from across SE Qld will bring sales books, while visiting dealers will offer supplies, stamps and advice. A coin dealer will also be on hand for those with coin interests. Entry is free, with lucky door prizes throughout the day and refreshments available. Sunshine Coast Open House The 2026 Sunshine Coast Open House program, running from 16-25 October, was launched on 28 August, with bookings for all events opening on 4 September. To Sergio with Love Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes helped shape the sound of the 1960s with his vibrant blend of bossa nova, samba, jazz and funk. Campaign for connectivity Poor mobile reception, patchy internet and blackspots across Eumundi and the wider Sunshine Coast have prompted Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien to launch a community campaign calling for better connectivity.

Ted met with Eumundi Chamber of Commerce president and Eumundi Service Station owner Louise Formosa, local business owners and residents at Dick Caplick Park, Eumundi on 26 August to discuss the impact unreliable service is having on families and businesses.

He said dropped calls and unreliable internet were costing people time, money and in some cases safety.

“Whether it’s a business struggling to stay connected, a family dealing with constant dropouts, or a hinterland resident facing blackspots, these problems are holding our region back,” said Ted. “Connectivity isn’t a luxury. In this digital age, it is a basic need.”

Louise said unreliable digital infrastructure added another burden for small businesses already under pressure. “Basic digital and connectivity infrastructure shouldn’t be the problem – we have enough issues to deal with.”

She said poor connectivity could deter people from setting up a business, living or working in Eumundi, particularly when working from home depends on a reliable connection.

“It means that they are unsure if they can stay here and invest time and effort into working from home. You might be trying to set up for a Zoom call, and you can’t even keep a proper connection.

It is embarrassing,” said Louise.

Ted said the campaign would give residents and business owners a way to record their experiences 10

and strengthen the case for improvements. “I want every business owner, every family and every resident who’s been let down by patchy coverage to have their say.”

Residents and businesses will be asked to rate their mobile and internet coverage from 1-5, helping build a coverage heat map of the electorate.

Feedback will be provided to government agencies and telecommunications providers, including Telstra, Optus and TPG, so practical improvements can be pursued.

“The more voices we hear, the stronger the case we can build for the mobile and internet services our growing community deserves,” said Ted. Residents and businesses can complete the survey at t.ly/bxEat.

The Dunga Derby Eumundi local Graeme Meade and co-driver Tony lined up with 48 other teams at 6am on 20 August, setting off on a 4-day Dunga Derby adventure in support of Rally for a Cause. The pair had already raised more than $10,000 to help local families and individuals across the Sunshine Coast.

Along the way, teams put their problem-solving skills to the test, following a series of clues to reach a destination that remained top secret.

Supported by Eumundi Rotary and other local businesses, Graeme and Tony entered the event with strong community backing and achieved an impressive fundraising result. Congratulations!

Nandroya Rd closure A key hinterland link between Eumundi and Cooroy is set to close for around 4 months while landslide repair works are carried out on Nandroya Rd. Noosa Council says the road, which branches off Eumundi Range Road in Cooroy, is expected to close from late September while crews undertake the repairs. The closure is likely to disrupt motorists who regularly use the popular route, with council finalising arrangements with service providers before releasing further details.

2026 Eumundi Writers Festival

Imagine chatting with your favourite author over coffee, asking questions in a workshop of just a handful of people, or having the conversation continue long after the panel has ended.

That's the experience awaiting readers at the Eumundi Writers Festival, where more than 50 authors, publishers, journalists, poets and storytellers will gather from 4-6 September for a weekend built on conversation, creativity and connection.

Audiences will hear personal reflections on journeys across landscapes and generations, and how writing can capture connection, memory and identity in ways that resonate well beyond the page.

Landowners directly affected by a proposed 33.78 ha Industry Zone between Ferrels Rd and Holts Rd met with State Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt on 19 August.

Much of the concern expressed was about the short time residents were given to make themselves aware of all the issues and to have their say. Noosa Council has since extended the submission date by 10 business days to 20 September.

One resident commented, “They have known about this for a very long time; why were we not given more time?” Another expressed concern saying, “It is going to affect the whole town. If this is not handled well, it will change Cooroy significantly – especially the traffic.”

When the impact on the environment was discussed, the main concern was the water quality of Lake McDonald. This issue stopped a previous application in the same catchment.

Noosa Council has supplied lists of possible uses for each of the precincts within the Industry Zones and precincts on the site. These can be confusing because the 3 different parcels have some similar and some different possibilities which as a resident described, “range from possibly acceptable to activities totally unsuitable for a town with high environmental expectations founded on years of hard work by previous councils and generations of shire residents”.

Full house and full hearts A sold-out crowd filled Eumundi State School Hall on 22 August as young Sunshine Coast musicians celebrated 10yrs of Eumundi School of Music (ESOM) with a lively showcase of local talent, topped off by a special performance from acclaimed singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke.

Founded by 5-time ARIA Award winner Katie Noonan, ESOM is marking a decade of helping young musicians pursue their dreams through tuition, mentoring and performance opportunities. Each year, aspiring artists work one-on-one with professional musicians for 3 months before taking the stage at the end-ofprogram concert.

Saturday night’s concert unfolded as a minifestival, featuring 2026 ESOM bands Compass and Real Creations, teen band Red Bin Chicken, showband Solidified, and local band Soleil, which formed through ESOM. A special reunion band of alumni also returned for a 1-night-only performance, bringing together former students from across the program’s 10yr history.

Katie said she was incredibly proud of the 51 young rockers who performed and of how far ESOM had come since it began.

“Seeing a full house and an audience with full hearts was the perfect way to celebrate 10yrs of ESOM,” said Katie. “The young musicians absolutely rocked the stage – giving it everything they had, playing their hearts out and showing just how much talent, passion and energy they have.”

She said watching ESOM grow and flourish over the past decade had been enormously rewarding, with more than 300 young people taking part in the program, forming bands, building confidence and developing lifelong friendships through music.

“ESOM has always been about community, creativity and the joy of making music. Celebrating this milestone with our students, alumni, families and supporters has been incredibly special,” said Katie.

Young metal artist creates swamp banksia sculpture When Eumundi Voice first featured Cooran teenager Banjo Brown last year, he was already attracting attention for his impressive metal sculptures. Now at just 14yo, he has completed his most ambitious work yet: a striking large-scale

sculpture inspired by the elaborate form of the swamp banksia, a native plant found in coastal wetlands along Australia's eastern seaboard.

The sculpture is a unique interpretation of a botanical form. Inspired by the horizontal cross-section of a swamp banksia seed cone, Banjo has reimagined it in a vertical orientation, transforming the natural pattern into a dramatic 3-dimensional artwork. Constructed from steel and copper, the sculpture celebrates the detailed geometry, texture and toughness found in the Australian landscape.

Creating the work demanded months of dedication. Banjo and his mentor invested more than 100 hours designing, fabricating and refining the sculpture, with Banjo bending every section of steel by hand and crafting many of the specialised tools and jigs required to complete it. To produce the detailed copper elements, he also learned traditional metalworking techniques including chasing and repoussé.

As with any ambitious artwork, challenges arose along the way. Materials and design elements were adapted to balance practicality and artistic vision, while technical hurdles required patience, creative problem-solving and persistence. Each obstacle became part of the sculpture's story and contributed to the skills Banjo developed throughout the process.

“The swamp banksia was a very ambitious and challenging project, and I loved every bit of it,” Banjo said. “It was exciting to finally see the design starting to come to life.”

A significant influence on the project was mentor Wayn from Kin Kin, whose workshop acted as a place of learning and experimentation.

Through regular visits, Banjo gained valuable hands-on experience and insight into traditional metalworking practices, developing both his technical abilities and confidence as an artist.

Banjo credits Wayn's knowledge, generosity and patience as being instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.

The completed sculpture stands as a testament to Banjo’s craftsmanship, curiosity and the continual inspiration of nature. Drawing on the remarkable structure of the swamp banksia, Banjo has created a work that invites viewers to look more closely at the intricate beauty of Australia's native flora.

For those who remember the determined young boy who spent years asking a blacksmith at the Pomona Markets to teach him the trade, this latest achievement comes as little surprise.

Banjo's talent continues to flourish, but it is his devotion, humility and willingness to learn that make his creative path so inspiring.

Pink Up Cooroy returns Pink Up Cooroy returns on 23 October with a fabulous Pink Up breakfast at the Cooroy RSL that promises community spirit, fun, generosity and plenty of pink.

In 2025, Cooroy community dynamo Carol Christiansen raised $41,209 for the McGrath Foundation through Pink Up events. Money raised provides free support for people affected by any form of cancer. Cooroy was the fourthhighest regional town fundraiser in Australia, behind only Milton, Penrith and Berry.

Every day 450 Australians are diagnosed with cancer, which translates to 1 in 2 people suffering from some form of cancer in their lifetime. The foundation began in 2005 when cricket legend Glenn McGrath’s wife Jane, was helped through her final weeks by a specialist cancer nurse.

Jane, Glenn and friend Tracey Bevan, believing that “no-one has to go it alone” initially focused on breast cancer. Since Jane’s death in 2008 the foundation has grown, through the sea of pink at annual Pink Cricket Tests, fun runs and Pink Up your Town initiatives. In 2025, 30 towns “pinked up” across Australia.

Carol Christiansen served on both Cooroy Schools’ P&Cs, numerous sporting clubs, is a Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Life Member and Mill Board President, and negotiated with Noosa Council for Cooroy’s own library, volunteering there for many years, especially with events. When Carol was asked to take on the breast cancer 18

fundraiser, it quickly became a cause close to her heart. After meeting then-new residents Glenn and Sara McGrath, her support for the foundation grew into a 5yr passion, backed by generous local businesses, Cooroy RSL and her dedicated team of volunteers.

Carol is pouring her energy into this year’s Pink Breakfast, following the recent loss of her wonderfully supportive husband Garry (Goo), confident local communities will once again respond generously. Together we can make a difference. Cooroy RSL has already donated $2,000 towards the event.

A $14,500 stunning pink pearl necklace is the major raffle prize with tickets at $20 available now from Cooroy RSL and Pink Up Cooroy Facebook page. Winners will be announced at the breakfast along with winner of the Pets in Pink photo competition.

Already participating are Eumundi/Cooroy Cricket club, Noosa District State High School, Cooroy Pony Club and several local businesses with a prize for best decorated business.

Get your friends together and book a table to decorate as tickets are already selling fast. “The event not only raises funds for the McGrath Foundation but also strengthens the bonds that make our local community so special,” said Carol.

Citizen science plays a vital role in conservation, and every wildlife sighting counts. You can report koala sightings on the free QWildlife app – upload information about a koala’s location as well as photos and observations about their appearance and condition. You can also purchase a second garden organics bin, maybe saving you going to the tip at all. You can find a list of items that you can dispose of for free on council’s website.

COUNCILLOR DIV 10 - CR DAVID LAW Safer roads for Eumundi I'm pleased to see Stage 2 of the North Arm Rd upgrade now underway, building on the progress already made through Stage 1. These works will extend the sealed road north of Wegner's Rd to the end of North Arm Rd, improving safety, reducing dust and delivering a more reliable road for residents and visitors.

Works are expected to be completed around April 2027, subject to weather conditions. Thank you to the local community for your patience during construction. Please take care when travelling through the area and follow the directions of traffic controllers while works are underway.

Eumundi Police have recently received reports from schools in our division about poor and illegal parking around school zones. Parking complaints often seem to increase as the school year progresses, whether due to complacency, convenience, or simply people becoming rushed during school drop-off and pick-up times. Please be mindful when parking or stopping near school zones. Some of the offences being reported include double parking and stopping contrary to a yellow line. The last thing Eumundi Police want to do is issue infringement notices for these matters. However, our priority is preventing a child from being seriously injured in a crash where illegal parking may be a contributing factor.

September school holidays are just around the corner. Along with the school holidays, road safety becomes a major priority for the Qld Police Service. Unfortunately, the road toll continues to rise with road deaths currently 12.8% higher compared to the same time last year. While

Qld’s population is increasing and our roads are becoming busier, vehicles are also becoming safer, roads continue to be improved, and road safety awareness remains at the forefront. Driver behaviour continues to be one of the biggest contributors to crashes. Eumundi Police, with assistance from officers from the Road Policing Unit will be out in force over the school holidays.

On 26 August a Bruce Highway traffic operation was conducted at Federal. In a 4-hour period officers conducted 825 random breath tests and 25 drug tests. Two drivers were charged with drink driving, including the driver of a B-double truck.

Five drivers were charged with drug driving and a further 26 infringement notices were issued.

During the same traffic operation, a 40yo Murrumba Downs man who has links to the Noosa Heads area was arrested and charged with 20 drug-related offences. It will be alleged the man was in possession of several types of dangerous drugs, including more than 150g of methylamphetamine, along with large quantities of cash. He has been remanded in custody and is next due to appear in court in early September.

Finally, Eumundi Station has been down a couple of staff members over the past 2 months. We are very thankful for the close working relationship we have with Cooroy, Pomona and Noosa Heads Police Stations, whose officers have assisted us during this period. Snr Constable Blair Dooran will be back on deck soon. Administration Officer Michelle continues to be our rock and is at the station every Monday and Wednesday from 8am-4pm. She can assist with any enquiries you may have, and if needed will take the details and forward them to us. Rest assured if the matter is urgent Michelle will ensure police respond, whether that is us or an officer from a neighbouring station.

Noosa Open Studios Yandina Street Fair From the earthy to the heavenly and everything in between – this year’s Yandina Street Fair was a world of fun, information, entertainment, edible delights, trinkets and treasures. The sunny day brought out a good crowd to celebrate the 46th year of the event.

Noosa Open Studios was a great opportunity to meet local artists in their studios and explore the Noosa Shire.

Sculptor Jenny Mcelhinney Jenny Mcelhinney opened her studio just outside Pomona and welcomed the chance to talk to visitors about her work, which spans native animals, angels and goddesses. Jenny has exhibited at Sculpture on the Edge and is not new to Noosa Open Studios, but this was her first time back after a short break.

100yrs of Cooroy Memorial Hall The main Street of Cooroy closed for the 100yr celebrations on 22 August, showcasing many aspects of the Cooroy community.

The theme for the day – Travelling Through Time – paid tribute to the visionary locals, who following WWI imagined a dedicated community space.

They created a haven where returned soldiers could gather, where the township could come together to honour those who never made it home, and where, after years of war, people could once again enjoy moments of fun and fellowship.

We journeyed through the rich history of the beloved hall, learning about its growth, the challenges it has faced, and the incredible persistence of the dedicated people who fought to keep it in community hands. Decades of diverse hall memories were brought to life through vibrant dancers, historic fashion parades, live music, inspiring presentations and song. Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, the Sunshine Coast 23

Peanuts, prosecution, pantomime Noosa Arts Theatre (NAT) has a lively program lined up between now and the new year, beginning with the much-loved musical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.

Based on Charles M Schulz’s beloved Peanuts characters, the musical was created by Clark Gesner and premiered Off-Broadway in 1967.

Built around a series of short scenes, each with its own song, the show ran for more than 1,500 performances. Its 1999 Broadway revival introduced new songs by Andrew Lippa.

His sister Sally is played by Bianca Pinkney, while Bridie Delaney appears as Lucy, determined to wean Linus, played by Thomas Loughran, from his blanket. Noah Kelly-Mandalis takes on the role of piano-playing Schroeder, and Laeni Rees appears as Snoopy, still fantasising about the Red Baron.

This delightful musical proves that whatever life throws at us, with kindness, acceptance and perseverance, there is happiness and hope in simple things.

NAT’s next production is Agatha Christie’s dramatic courtroom thriller Witness for the Prosecution, directed by Andrew Moon and running from 19-29 November. Although the original story appeared in 1925, Christie then wrote the play set in 1950s London. A young man is accused of murdering an older woman, and his defence depends on an alibi from his German wife. With WWII only recently ended, can she be trusted? The plot escalates as twists and turns point to his guilt especially when his wife becomes a witness against him.

The story was memorably brought to the screen in the acclaimed 1957 film, with Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton delivering spellbinding performances. With an amazing pool of actors on the Sunshine Coast, Andrew Moon is sure to have the perfect cast already in rehearsal.

KINDNESS COUNTS A little gratitude for Fay The team at Eumundi Voice recently spotted this heartfelt story on Facebook and felt it was one worth sharing in the magazine. Fay also kindly delivers copies of Eumundi Voice to Verrierdale Hall each fortnight, and for that we are very grateful too.

“I have been hiring Verrierdale Hall for almost 6yrs, and today I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge someone who has quietly been such a beautiful part of my time there.

Fay takes such incredible care of the hall and more importantly, the people who walk through its doors. She has always looked out for me and for the women I bring into that space, making sure we feel welcomed, supported and cared for.

It is so important to acknowledge the people in

our communities who give their time and energy simply because they genuinely care. These are the volunteers who are not looking for recognition, but who continue to show up because they love their community and want to support the people within it.

Fay is one of those people. For almost 6yrs, I have felt her support, kindness and care. I will continue to sing her praises because people like Fay deserve to be acknowledged.

So today, we simply want to say thank you, Fay. Thank you for everything you do for Verrierdale Hall, for always watching out for those who use the space, and for the care you show to every person who walks through its doors.”

ENVIRONMENT The humpback highway Whales are migrating north at the moment, heading to warmer waters to breed and give birth before returning to the Antarctic waters from August to November. Some 30,000 humpback whales follow a migration highway along the east coast of Australia.

While Hervey Bay is considered the best location in Qld to view the passing whales, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast also offer some prime viewing locations. From the land, the best spots to see whales passing by are Pt Cartwright, Pt Arkwright, Moffat Headland and Noosa National Park. Wild HeART Student Art Prize Sunshine Coast Council’s (SCC) Wild HeART Student Art Prize is back for 2026. SCC invites young artists to step outside, connect with nature and turn that experience into original artwork.

Hosted at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, the council event celebrates children and young people’s creative excellence and their connection to Australia’s remarkable biodiversity.

If you have a young artist at home who loves the natural world, encourage them to explore a local environment, choose an Australian plant, animal or fungus that captures their imagination, and enter their 2-D, original artwork before submissions close on 5 October.

Students can feature Australian fauna, flora and/or fungi, and with the Sunshine Coast’s rich natural environments on our doorstep, the hardest part may be deciding which species to focus on.

Last year, Abouka, a finalist in the under-8 category, found inspiration in Ninderry and created a coloured pencil and ink artwork of a bandicoot.

them. Eumundi Conservation Park, Doonan Creek Environment Reserve and Verrierdale Rise Nature Refuge are just a few local spots where families can slow down, look closely and discover a subject with a real story to tell.

The free art prize is open to students enrolled in Prep to Yr12, from 5-18yrs, from the Sunshine Coast and neighbouring local government areas.

Entries are considered across 3 age categories, with finalists to be showcased in a special exhibition trail at Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden during December 2026 and January 2027.

EUMUNDI ROTARY CLUB The invitation that changed everything As a Rotarian with over 20yrs of service I often look back and wonder at the many opportunities that accepting a simple invitation to attend a

Rotary meeting has brought me over the years.

Many people – including myself before becoming involved – are completely unaware of what a Rotary Club is, or the work that Rotarians do in their communities.

Rotarians belong to a global network of community-minded people who come together to create positive, lasting change locally and around the world. Through local clubs, Rotarians use their skills, time and connections to support causes such as peacebuilding, health, education, clean water and community development. At its heart being a Rotarian is about fellowship, service and making a practical difference wherever help is needed. The motto of Rotary is “Service above Self”.

Through the Rotary Club of Eumundi, I have had the privilege of being involved in projects that bring people together and make a genuine difference, from Eumundi Voice and the Kind Communities Project to Clean Up Australia Day, youth programs and our club’s Kemabolo PNG health project. For me these projects show the heart of Rotary: ordinary people giving their time, energy and care to strengthen our local community and support others beyond it.

We are at a time where creating community connections and giving back is becoming more important than ever. Technological advances are changing how we communicate, interact and behave in the world. Rotary provides an opportunity to form meaningful connections and relationships with like-minded people while giving back to the community.

Rotary has given me far more personally than I ever could have imagined. Through serving my community, I have built lasting connections, led volunteers overseas, and developed skills in leadership, public speaking, event planning, writing and editing through my contribution to Eumundi Voice.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

Thundereggs brought us to Eumundi Visiting from Melbourne in 1977, we had already seen the Big Pineapple, the Big Cow, the Big Stubby and Big Alice’s Wonderland, yet still had another week to fill. Our 1-page tourist guide had just 1 place left to try – the Eumundi Thunderegg Farm.

What a wonderful afternoon it was – fossicking, digging, checking whether our finds were merely lumps of Mt Eerwah rock or real thundereggs, seeing who had the biggest, then racing to the workroom to have them cut by the saw and marvel at the magical contents inside.

We sold up in Melbourne and returned to Eumundi in March 1979.

The name thunderegg is said to have originated in Native American legends, where these rounded rocks were believed to be the eggs of thunderbirds – mythical creatures associated with thunder and lightning during storms.

They do not seem to feature in Australian Indigenous legends, perhaps because they were too hard to open, but they have been collected for centuries in Germany, Mexico, Brazil, the USA, and since white settlement in Australia, especially

in volcanic areas of Qld. Thundereggs form when silica-rich fluids settle in cavities in volcanic rock and solidify, creating layers alongside other minerals. Their beautiful, unique internal patterns come from impurities and trace elements in those fluids.

Some people believe thundereggs hold spiritual or metaphysical qualities, others use them in jewellery and crafts, but most simply love them as decorative treasures, especially if they have been personally fossicked.

The Eumundi Thunderegg Farm opened sometime in the 1970s and passed through several hands as it developed into a tourist attraction.

Visitors like us paid for a Miner’s Licence, collected a bucket and pick, and excitedly hacked away at prepared, well-turned ground. We presented our best finds for opening and polishing, convinced our beautiful treasures were the finest ever found.

Despite rumours that eggs were brought in from elsewhere, Mt Eerwah has such an abundance that, even today, thundereggs are plentiful on the site.

Many tourists and locals remember Mike and Irene Howell, who arrived from England in 1981 with their 5 children. The family featured on the souvenir postcard sold in the little shop, alongside tea towels, caps and other trinkets.

Terry and Di Kensell first learned about thundereggs while visiting Mt Hay, and after returning to Melbourne to build and sell a house, moved to Eumundi in 1986 and purchased the Thunderegg Farm as a business in January 1987.

local councils brought increasing regulations, including a demand for a full mining licence, even though the “miners” were often children with a bucket and pick.

In 1999, while seeking permission to possibly subdivide 5 of the farm’s 21 acres at the back of the property, they were instead ordered by the council to close the farm as a tourist attraction, despite still holding the café licence. The property was divided, and Robyn Green also assures us there are still plenty of thundereggs on her section.

The Sunshine Coast lost a valuable family tourist attraction. Parents regret that their children will never know the same fun they once enjoyed.

Terry and Diane have since spent 13yrs with Pomona Meals on Wheels and remain involved in the community. They hold many fond memories of Eumundi, its characters of those days and the happy children who came fossicking.

The biggest thunderegg known in the world still has pride of place in Terry and Di’s garden.

George Courtney – the best of men On 8 August 2026 George Courtney left this earth aged 96, but the legacy he leaves will live in memories for Noosa Arts Theatre (NAT) members, audiences, visitors and backstage crews for years to come.

Born in Ireland, George migrated to Sydney with his parents in 1950. He later met the love of his life Margaret at an office Christmas party. The couple married in 1979 and moved to Peregian in 1991.

When Margaret joined Noosa Arts Theatre and became its “wardrobe mistress”, she encouraged George to become involved too.

From 1992, George designed and created sets for over 80 productions. His creative eye and remarkable talent as a professional artist, honed at East Sydney Technical College in his 20s, drew gasps of admiration and applause.

Whether recreating a Shakespearean theatre, an Edwardian drawing room, outback Australia, 10 scene changes for a pantomime, or multi-tiered, reversible backdrops for rapid musical transitions, George brought every stage world vividly to life.

George and good mate Nelson Tomlin, aided by the “secret men’s business” crew of carpenters, handymen and willing volunteers, spent Tuesdays, Thursdays and many weekends creating theatre magic. If a scene called for a portrait or a special landscape on the wall, George would create it.

He was a director’s delight, accommodating requests or good-naturedly explaining why his idea worked better.

A Life Member of NAT, George was treasured for his gentle manner, quick humour and kindness.

His devotion to Margaret was evident in every way, including his complete support as their home overflowed with the dozens of costumes she created for each production. Together, they gave generously to the theatre and to the people around them.

Playwright David Williamson said, “George was a wonderful person and so very generous with his time and talent. He built some terrific sets for my plays, and it was a great pleasure to know him.”

Others wrote, “The world truly was more wonderful with him in it. He will never be forgotten, as he enriched the lives of those of us lucky enough to spend time with him. He was the best of men. The world needs more Georges in it.”

Above all, he was Margaret’s proud and loving husband, a cherished stepfather to her daughters, and an absolute legend to all who were blessed to know him.

ON THIS DAY SEPTEMBER 2026

Black Summer September is historically the month with the highest bushfire danger in SE Qld. 2019 became known as Australia’s Black Summer and the Sunshine Coast was not immune.

Fire broke out at Peregian on 9 September and required more than 100 fire crews to bring it under control. More than 7,000 residents fled their homes. Miraculously, only 1 house was destroyed.

In November, bushfires at Cooroibah and Noosa North Shore caused the evacuation of 6,000 residents and 1 home was lost. In mid-December, Peregian Springs and surrounding areas on the Sunshine Coast came under threat for the second time in a couple of months. About 100 firefighters and 5 water-bombing aircraft worked on the fire.

Although 60 homes were evacuated, none were lost.

By the time the bushfire season officially ended in late January 2020, more than 35,000 Qld Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) personnel had fought bush fires, which burned an estimated 6.6M ha and destroyed 49 houses, 68 sheds and 5 commercial buildings. The Insurance Council of Australia estimated the insurance loss for the 2019–20 Australian bushfire season as of 28 May 2020 was AU$2.32B, of which Qld represented 3%.
