said the event’s intimate Cont. from p1 village format was central to its appeal, giving people the chance to connect through books, ideas and shared experience.

“Stories have the power to bring people together and to support conversations that matter – that’s the magic of the Eumundi Writers Festival,” said Dr Campin.

The festival will also welcome influential Australian leaders and changemakers. The Hon Dr Kevin Rudd AC, Australia’s 26th Prime Minister, will headline the program in conversation with The Betoota Advocate editor Clancy Overell. Former Noosa and Sunshine Coast mayor Bob Abbott, who won 10 consecutive elections during his distinguished career, will reflect on public life and share insights from his forthcoming memoir.

The festival will also feature Stella Prize nominee Laura Jean McKay and Steve MinOn, recently nominated for the Miles Franklin Award. A Father’s Day session will bring together author Simon Cleary and son Dominic, alongside Kári Gíslason and son Magnús, for a discussion on father-son travel memoirs.

Another highlight will be author Sarah Cochrane Ridout in conversation with Kristina Olsson. Sarah is the granddaughter of Kath Cochrane who worked alongside Oodgeroo Noonuccal in the successful campaign for the 1967 Referendum, enriching festival conversations about identity, truth-telling and belonging.

Aspiring writers will be able to take part in small-group workshops covering crime writing, children’s literature, romance, editing, publishing, book design and artificial intelligence. The festival will close with a free ceremony featuring acclaimed romance author Anna Campbell and

Professor Roly Sussex in a conversation about love and why telling the truth matters.

Children’s Festival Noosa Pengari Steiner School at 86 Nyell Rd, Doonan will celebrate 30yrs when its annual Children’s Festival returns on 23 August from 10am-3pm. The day will feature live music, food, pre-loved goods, market stalls, activities and rides. A Craft Card provides entry to workshops including beeswax candle making, tie-dying, woodwork and the children’s tent, while an Activity Bundle covers a range of rides. Noosa Beach Classic Car Show

The Noosa Beach Classic Car show planned for Father’s Day 6 September, has unfortunately been cancelled for this year, due to a number of factors.

The club said it is very disappointing for all club members – and for the public who enjoy the display of classic cars and entertainment at the Tewantin site – but they plan to continue to work in partnership with sponsors and business to hold the event in 2027.

Noosa Jazz Festival

Sunshine Coast Open House

The Noosa Jazz Festival is here at last, bringing 10 days of live music and celebration from 28 August to 6 September. Organised by the Noosa Jazz Club, this year’s program offers something for every jazz lover, from Lunch by the Water at Lucio’s Marina Restaurant and Jazz on the Terrace at 250 Grammi, to a Noosa River Sunset Cruise and Dinner Concert at the Noosa Boathouse.

Start Up Student Art Prize Cooroy Butter Factory invites students in Yrs 10-12 from the Sunshine Coast, Gympie and hinterland regions to submit works for display in the gallery from 17 September to 11 October. The works will be for sale, providing an opportunity for young artists to learn how a gallery operates.

One student artist will receive a Skill Development Prize worth $1,000 sponsored by ArtsNational Noosa, a 12-month membership to the Cooroy Butter Factory, and entry to the end-of-year Eclectica Art Awards. Entries close 7 September.

Rooftop Dance The Black Sorrows Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows will bring their blend of gospel, soul, country and rock to Sunshine Beach Surf Club on 20 September, with doors opening at 2pm. Sponsorship recipients announced This year’s Experience Eumundi Sponsorship Program will support a wide range of local initiatives, from youth mentoring and equine therapy to hospital equipment, sporting facility upgrades and community events.

Recipients include Eumundi School of Music's mentoring program for young musicians, Hoofbeats Sanctuary's equine therapy program supporting girls and young women, Wishlist's blanket warmer for Nambour Hospital, Eumundi State School's SunnyKids wellbeing program, drainage improvements at the Eumundi Showgrounds, and security upgrades for the Eumundi Tennis Club.

"Every Wednesday and Saturday, thousands of people visit Eumundi Markets to browse artisan stalls, meet local makers and enjoy one of Qld's best-known markets. What many don't realise is that every visit also helps fund community organisations, local projects and essential services that benefit the people of Eumundi and beyond.

Whether it's supporting young people, improving local facilities or helping older residents stay connected, every market day creates benefits that extend well beyond the market itself," said Experience Eumundi General Manager Mark Cameron.

Last year alone, around 1.2M people visited Eumundi Markets, generating more than $54M in visitor expenditure, supporting more than 1,300 jobs and helping return around $7.5M to community organisations, local initiatives and services.

Mark said the markets had always existed to benefit the community as well as visitors. He said many visitors had no idea of the impact their visit made.

"People come here for the atmosphere, the incredible stallholders and the unique experience, 10

but every purchase helps give something back."

Beyond its sponsorship program, Experience Eumundi also supports the fundraising efforts of volunteer groups that manage market parking, helping organisations including Camp Quality, Rotary, Lions, the Noosa Women's Shed and the Eumundi Historical Assn raise funds for their own community programs.

Experience Eumundi also helps fund practical initiatives that improve everyday life, including a free weekly shopping bus that enables elderly residents to access essential services and remain connected to their community.

"When our markets succeed, our community succeeds. Every person who visits Eumundi becomes part of that story, whether they realise it or not," said Mark.

Cooroy rezoning If you live near 94 and 170 Holts Rd, Cooroy you will be interested in the proposed change to the Noosa Plan 2020 amendment – to rezone a portion of land at Holts Rd from Rural to Industry Zone including low impact industry. There is also provision for future access along Ferrels Rd and Roberts Dr and impacting Cooroy-Belli Ck Rd. Noosa Council's Director of Environment and Strategy Kim Rawlings said, “The Holts Rd site has been identified through regional and local planning investigations as a suitable location to support employment land supply, close to existing industrial activities and major transport connections."

Coffee, conversations & gelato Italian language learners and lovers of conversation are invited to gather in Eumundi this October for a relaxed social catchup filled with coffee, gelato and friendly practice.

The monthly Italian Language Exchange social catchup will take place on 1 October at 10.30am, at Lorenzo's Gem, Artisan Gelato & Specialty Coffee Bar, located at 5/2 Etheridge St. The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

Hosted as part of the group's regular monthly meetups, the gathering offers a welcoming space for people at all stages of their Italian journey. Beginners can practise in a supportive environment, while fluent speakers have the chance to share their knowledge and help others grow in confidence.

This month's venue adds a special local flavour to the morning. Lorenzo's Gem is a newly opened gelateria and coffee bar run by Lorenzo and Gem, whose warmth and hospitality make it an ideal setting for conversation, connection and a little taste of Italy on the Sunshine Coast.

Over coffee, lunch or gelato, participants will mix and mingle in small groups, working through a fresh themed conversation topic. Each month, The Italian Language Exchange chooses a new venue and a new theme to keep the gatherings lively, useful and enjoyable.

For October the theme is: A Rewarding Memory from Growing Up. Guests are encouraged to think about a moment that has stayed with them, something they discovered, or a time when they felt truly inspired.

There is also a little homework, but only the fun kind. Attendees are invited to prepare a shortwritten piece in Italian using past tense verbs.

During the catchup, they will have the chance to share their story a few times as the group rotates through pairs, offering relaxed speaking practice with no pressure.

Whether you come with a few sentences, a favourite childhood memory or simply the courage to try, the morning is designed to be friendly, informal and encouraging. Employment and financial literacy for women Pomona and District Community House (PCH) will host 2 free workshops for women in October, designed to build practical skills and confidence.

The first workshop on 8 October, with a followup session on 22 October, will support women entering or re-entering the workforce after time away.

Participants will get assistance with resumé writing, responding to selection criteria and preparing cover letters, as well as learning key interview tips, including discussion about AI interviews.

A second, separate workshop will be held on 29 October, with a follow-up session on 12 November, focusing on financial literacy.

This practical workshop will cover budgeting, identifying fixed and variable costs, and strategies for becoming more financially independent.

Initial workshops run from 8.45am-2pm, with follow-up sessions from 9.30am-12.30pm.

Sessions will be delivered both in person and online to make it easier for more women to attend. The workshops are delivered by PCH in collaboration with a rurally located woman, business founder and educator. BYO lunch.

Katie Rose Cottage calls for community support Katie Rose Cottage Hospice – a vital provider of end-of-life care for the Sunshine Coast community – is seeking public support as it works towards reopening its palliative care facility in Doonan.

The hospice ceased providing services earlier this year due to a lack of government and community funding. To reopen and continue operating, the facility requires approximately $40,000 per week in combined government and community funding.

Joseph Kelly MP has put forward an e-petition to the Legislative Assembly of Qld calling for stronger provision and coordination of palliative care services across the state.

The petition asks the House to call on the Crisafulli LNP Government to ensure Palliative Care Qld has the resources needed to operate as an effective peak body for the sector. It also calls for all hospices in Qld to be supported so they can continue operating, for every region to have access to hospice services, and for all Hospital and Health Services to provide dedicated community palliative care services and dedicated palliative care in-patient beds.

Outdoor learning workshops

Janet Millington, an experienced educator with a passion for outdoor education and permaculture is facilitating workshop experiences for homeschooled children, their parents, mentors and teachers.

Janet explained that her philosophy of education evolved over 50yrs of experience at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

What she learned was, “You cannot teach anyone anything they don’t think is necessary for them to know. Learning to learn is the key. That is achieved through meaningful and relevant learning experiences that are designed to motivate and interest the learner.”

This workshop introduces homeschool families, parents, mentors and teachers to the principles of Permaculture and outdoor learning, using the ethics of Care for Earth, Care for People and Return of Surplus as a foundation for gardening, education and community engagement. Held at the Eumundi Community Garden, the program demonstrates how gardens can be used as powerful learning environments to support Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) education, wellbeing and student engagement, drawing on successful models developed at Eumundi State School’s Enviro Centre. Participants will gain practical skills, resources and lesson ideas to create meaningful outdoor learning experiences that meet curriculum requirements while building stronger connections with nature, community and lifelong learning.

Because of the amount of material provided, the course is limited to 10 participants. Applicants should fill in a short questionnaire which is straightforward.

Janet reminded me of what an amazing asset the Eumundi Community Garden is for the town. It is small at the moment – to reduce the amount of work needed to maintain it – but has the capacity to grow as more of the community get into gardens.

Noosa Country Show The Noosa Country Show is gearing up to return on 11-12 September, promising 2 days of family entertainment, community spirit, country traditions and exciting competitions. From the thrill of the arena to the creativity of the pavilion, this year’s show will celebrate the best of local talent, rural skills, young achievers and classic country charm. Visitors can look forward to a lively program designed to bring people together, support community causes and create memories worth talking about long after the gates close.

Competitions, displays and special events There will be plenty to see, enter and enjoy across the showgrounds, with schedules now available for a wide range of favourite categories. Young cooks and bakers are encouraged to roll up their sleeves for the Junior Cookery competition, with classes covering cakes, biscuits, slices and other tasty creations.

Green thumbs will also have their chance to shine, with Horticulture and Junior Horticulture schedules available for gardeners of all ages.

Whether it is prize-winning blooms, carefully grown produce or a young gardener’s first entry, the show is an opportunity to let local gardens take centre stage.

Creative locals are invited to take part in the Craft and Junior Craft sections, showcasing knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery and other handmade works. These colourful displays are always a highlight of the pavilion and a wonderful way to celebrate the talent and imagination within the community.

New attractions and returning favourites Something new is coming to the Noosa Country Show this year, with greyhounds joining the program as an exciting new event.

The popular Classic Car Show will also return, bringing together vintage and classic vehicles from across the region. With free entry, cash prizes and the chance to take part in the Grand Parade, car owners are invited to show off their pride and joy, while visitors can admire the vehicles, meet the owners and vote in the People’s Choice Award.

Traditional show favourites will also be on display, including the Dog Show and the much-loved Wood Chop competition. From 4-legged friends to the unmistakable sound of axes and fresh timber, these events capture the energy, skill and heritage that make a country show so special.

Restoring old engines is the passion of the Antique Machinery Restoration Society, and these were complemented by the gleaming chrome and raw power of the lineup of modern prime movers. Asian Food Festival 2026 There was a strong family feel to The Curated Plate’s Asian Food Festival at Spicers Tamarind Retreat as 5 of the region’s best chefs cooked up a storm on 1 August.

Paul Blain, founder of the original Tamarind Retreat, said restaurant life was hard, but the chefs had become like family, with many having worked alongside one another for years. Festival director Peter Kuruvita said the Asian Food Festival stood apart from other food festivals because it brought chefs together, rather than showcasing the food of a single venue. He said SE Qld’s fresh, high-quality produce was a key reason local restaurants continued to stand out.

Fortunately, the rain held off, allowing the crowd to enjoy the food, music from Hamilton Band, and cocktails from local distillers and breweries.

Families filled Fairhill Botanic Gardens on 9 August for the opening of the Kids' Barn, where children had the opportunity to cuddle, bottle feed and walk goats, even enjoy a goat massage, explore the beautiful adventure grounds, follow the International Fairy Grotto, tackle the playroom, browse the market shop, enjoy a delicious locally grown meal or buy native plants from the extensive range grown onsite.

Crusaders create koala corridor Over 40 volunteers gathered in Ridgewood on 7 August to plant around 600 koala food trees. Former Eumundi residents and Qld Koala Crusaders, the Halverson family, hope to regenerate their new property as a safe corridor for koalas and other species.

With a grant from Qld Trust for Nature, the help of We Grow Community and Noosa District Landcare Group, the volunteers worked like a “well-oiled machine” and completed the task within 3 hours, assisted by a hole digging Aquaspear.

Co-Founder of Qld Koala Crusaders Meghan Halverson said, “I have always dreamt of contributing in a meaningful way to our beloved koalas and after we purchased this beautiful 33acre property in March, we wanted to connect a corridor for koalas.”

The volunteers were rewarded with a wonderful morning tea and the knowledge that this project will be a legacy for koalas and other creatures into the future.

Rotary trailer for sale This is a short note to inform readers that Eumundi Rotary is putting its trusty trailer up for sale. The club has used it for many community related activities, including collecting school desks and chairs to be shipped to PNG. Many a sausage sizzle has been possible through the use of our trailer, used to cart barbecues, gazebos etc.

Kemabolo Project update Project Kemabolo – a Eumundi Rotary Club initiative – continues to make steady progress.

Since our last report, Rotary members Rocky and Kilagi have returned to the village to begin work on the new secure workshop, storage and accommodation building. The 20

container of building materials sent through the project has finally arrived, and the villagers have enthusiastically joined in, helping to lay foundations, mix concrete and erect the framework for the new facility. Women carried water to the site, while young men hauled bags of sand up the steep hill.

Kilagi is extremely pleased with the progress reporting, “The start of construction has truly galvanised the village. Everyone is excited about the positive changes this project will bring to their lives.”

Meanwhile back in Eumundi, support for the project has continued to grow. Janet Millington facilitated a workshop to assemble birthing kits for Joanne, the village nurse. The workshop generated strong interest, including from a group of about 20 women who helped on the day and have now become “Friends of Kemabolo”.

A Facebook page called Friends of Kemabolo, has been created so supporters can follow the progress of this Eumundi Rotary Club project.

The next step is to raise the funds needed to complete the secure workshop and refurbish the

Aid Post, giving Joanne and her patients a better facility for birthing, triage and general medical care.

The club will also be seeking sponsorships and donations to help bring the next stage of Project Kemabolo to life. Interest has already been shown by volunteers keen to travel to the village to assist with dentistry, nursing, health education and trade training for high school students. Before this can happen, suitable accommodation, facilities and security must be in place.

Stop – don’t reach for the tweezers!

Stop - don't reach for the tweezers! It's the instinctive first move with a tick bite, and it's actually one of the worst things you can do.

The key message is this: don’t squeeze the tick’s body. Squeezing can push more allergen-loaded saliva into the skin, increasing the risk of a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis. People also often worry that they have removed the tick but left the head behind. In most cases, the head itself is not the main concern. It is usually just a tiny piece of debris in the skin, much like a splinter, and the body will generally work it out naturally.

Tick bite first aid is something every Sunshine Coast resident should know – because ticks are part of life here and knowing how to respond safely can prevent a serious reaction.

The 3 main types found locally are the Australian paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus), the bush tick and the brown dog tick. Of these, the paralysis tick is the one we need to take most seriously. It can inject a neurotoxin that may cause muscle weakness or paralysis in people and pets, and it has also been linked to mammalian meat allergy, also known as alpha-gal allergy. Most tick bites only cause mild irritation, but some can trigger serious allergic reactions, and in rare cases paralysis can occur, especially in young children and animals.

The current recommendation is to kill the tick where it is, rather than trying to pull it out. For adult ticks, use an ether-containing spray to freeze the tick. Leave it in place and it will usually drop 22

off on its own within a few days. This is definitely on my own “should probably restock the first aid kit” list. If in a remote location, professional help is unavailable and there is no known history of tick anaphylaxis, removal can be attempted with finetipped tweezers, grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible without squeezing the body.

After a tick bite, watch closely for signs of an allergic reaction, including swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness or vomiting. These symptoms need urgent medical attention – call 000 immediately.

To help prevent tick bites, use a repellent containing picaridin or DEET, especially around the ankles, and wear light-coloured protective clothing. Ticks often climb up from the legs to warm, sheltered areas such as the hairline, ears and groin, so stopping them early is key.

GSLC celebrates 40yrs Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) celebrated its 40th Anniversary on 8 August, as thousands attended their annual Shepherd’s Fair. The event featured rides, stalls, food vans and entertainment, alongside an Anniversary Hub showcasing the college’s history through displays, a Memory Tree and a Wall of Legends. A highlight was the opening of a 20yo time capsule, reconnecting former students with letters to their future selves. Principal Jen Gibb said the day reflected GSLC’s strong sense of community, while the celebrations ended with fireworks after dark.

Baird brothers reel in top honours Local Doonan brothers Billy and Jack Baird have delivered standout performances in the latest Aussie Junior Fishing Classic (AJFC), earning multiple podium finishes and showcasing the skill, sportsmanship and environmental values celebrated by the national junior fishing competition.

The AJFC ran from 27 June to 19 July, encouraging young anglers across Australia to get outdoors, fish responsibly and care for the waterways they enjoy.

In the 8-12yrs division, Billy Baird claimed 1st Place in the Trevally category, with his 2 largest Trevally measuring a combined 881mm. He also placed 2nd in the Most Fish category, helped by a 50cm flathead caught in the Noosa River at Tewantin.

Older brother Jack, competing in the 13-17yrs division, was awarded 1st Place for Collecting Rubbish and Keeping Waterways Clean. He also finished 2nd in the Most Species category after catching 32 different fish species, as well as 2nd in both the Trevally and Whiting categories. His catches included a personal-best 47cm bass at Lake Macdonald and a 54cm giant trevally from the Noosa River.

AJFC Co-founder Sam Beckmann said the brothers’ results reflected the heart of the competition.

“Billy’s impressive trevally result highlights the skills he is developing, while Jack’s commitment to both fishing and caring for our waterways perfectly represents what the AJFC is all about.

We’re proud to provide a platform where young

people can challenge themselves and inspire others to enjoy fishing responsibly.”

Billy aged 11 and Jack 14, have been fishing since they were 3yo, learning the basics from their dad before spending countless hours on Sunshine Coast rivers, dams and waterways. The brothers fish together most weekends, often before or after school, and are especially passionate about kayak, tinny and land-based fishing. Most of their catches are released.

The pair are also developing their own wooden lures with the help of master craftsman Eruch Rowan of Frequent Flash Lures. Jack hopes to one day represent Daiwa as a sponsored angler in bass tournaments, while Billy has his sights set on bream tournaments.

The next Aussie Junior Fishing Classic will run from 19 September to 10 October, offering more than $6,000 in prizes across more than 15 categories. Open to anglers aged 3-17, the Australia-wide event is run through the 2 Bent Rods app, allowing participants to fish anywhere and submit catches directly.

Old band – New name The Sunshine Coast’s oldest concert band has entered a new chapter, adopting a new name that reflects its growing membership across the region. Formerly known as the Noosa District Concert Band Inc, the organisation officially became the Hinterland Concert Band Inc in July this year.

The band’s history dates back to January 1986, when a group of talented amateur and professional musicians came together to share their passion for music with fellow musicians and the wider community. The band was incorporated in September 1991 with 36 members and, over the years, rehearsed and performed at a variety of venues throughout the Noosa district and across the Sunshine Coast.

A significant change occurred in 2018 when rehearsals were relocated to the Sunshine Brass Band Hall in Nambour. Under the leadership of Musical Director and Conductor Julie Dean, an

experienced music teacher and musician, the move attracted increased membership from the Sunshine Coast hinterland and surrounding areas.

Today the band has approximately 30 members drawn from communities stretching from Montville and Mapleton to Eumundi and Sunshine Beach, with many members living in the greater Nambour area. To better reflect this broad geographic representation, the committee elected to adopt the name Hinterland Concert Band Inc. The band welcomes musicians of all ages and backgrounds, from upper primary and secondary school students through to retirees. While members are expected to have a playing ability equivalent to secondary school level or about 2yrs of experience, the band prides itself on its friendly, inclusive and supportive atmosphere.

Members must be able to read music and play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument.

Most musicians provide their own instruments, although some larger instruments are available through the band’s loan program. Prospective members are encouraged to enquire about instrument availability and are welcome to attend rehearsals for several weeks before deciding whether to join.

Membership fees apply, with discounted rates available for students.

ENVIRONMENT

Another bite at shark management Noosa MP Sandy Bolton has sought clarification in State Parliament on what alternatives are being considered to shark control equipment, including nets, under Qld’s Shark Management Plan.

In response, Primary Industries Minister Tony Perrett said human safety remained the program’s top priority in the Shark Management Plan 20252029. However, about 60% of the additional $88.2M investment would go towards research, trials of modern technology, education and the SharkSmart drone initiative.

A Shark Mitigation Alternative Framework is also being developed to guide the systematic identification and assessment of new technologies and management practices. The framework is expected to be released soon.

All shark nets were fitted with acoustic whale alarms before the current migration period. Noosa will trial a modified version during the southern whale migration from September to October this

year. New signage will encourage beachgoers to report whales caught in shark nets.

Sunshine Coast News reported on 22 July that the SharkSmart drone trial, which ran from 2020 to 2024 and included the Sunshine Coast, had proven valuable and more effective in protecting swimmers and marine life.

Drones currently operate at Noosa Main Beach, Coolum North, Alexandra Headland, Kings Beach and Happy Valley. The program works closely with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to ensure the safety of equipment, operators and the public.

A government spokesperson said drones were expected to become a permanent fixture at more beaches in the near future.

Mr Perrett said suitable alternatives to shark nets were always being considered. Further updates are expected once new strategies are added to the Shark Mitigation Alternative Framework. Visit: t.ly/wd4o5.

Interconnected smoke alarms Over half of fires in Qld homes start in the kitchen, with more than 630 last year causing structural damage. Other causes are malfunctioning appliances, and faulty wiring. The batteries of e-mobility devices and portable phones also cause house fires. Smoke alarms are heard before you smell smoke to give early warning and more time to react or evacuate.

If you live in a newly built home, a rental or a property sold since 2022, you will know about the requirements for interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms.

From 1 January 2027 the requirement is being expanded to include all remaining owneroccupied homes, private dwellings and registered caravans and motorhomes in Qld. Remove your old alarms, and fit new ones to improve your home safety.

Interconnected means that if one alarm is

triggered, then all units are triggered wirelessly and must sound simultaneously. “If one goes off, all go off”.

Photoelectric means it must comply with AS 3786-2014 and not contain an ionisation sensor.

Check the back of the unit to make sure you are getting the correct ones.

The power source must be either hardwired into mains power or a secondary backup or have a non-removable 10yr lithium battery.

Units must be placed in every bedroom, in hallways between bedrooms, and on every storey.

Have a family discussion and plan your fire escape plan. Know where your fire extinguishers are, and the kitchen fire blanket. Talk about dangers of candle flames, battery charging and open fires.

You don’t need to tell the Qld Fire Department about your smoke alarm compliance. But when selling a home, you may need to provide proof that you have complied with the legislation.

A Eumundi local explained: “Before we sold our home last year, we had to buy a set of 6 online and make sure they were compliant – and had an Australian seller. The instructions were (sort of) in English, but we just couldn’t get them to work and were nearly deafened during the attempt.

Being able to get the seller to listen to the set-up beeps and tell us when all were connected, was critical. If you prefer, get a professional to fit them for you, especially as the work will involve ladders to fit the units on the ceilings. We had to prove the units were fitted as part of our declaration to the real-estate agent. Now you are required to install these sorts of alarms even if you’re not selling.”

Hollywood in Woombye?

Hollywood and the Gold Coast have long been synonymous with film production. Could Woombye become the next home for Australian film?

Although still early days, an ambitious film studio project is taking shape in Woombye. With location, set sites, rehearsal space and storage facilities well underway, the venture is creating exciting opportunities for film makers, actors, directors, set designers, camera operators and the many crew members needed to create makebelieve magic.

The Sunshine Coast Screen Collective is pivotal in encouraging local talent and bringing expert knowledge and experience together, especially for those longing to become involved. The collective provides access to the Woombye facilities and equipment, helping emerging filmmakers gain valuable hands-on experience.

North Arm actor and filmmaker Mirko Grillini is among those helping drive the region’s screen industry forward. Mirko has appeared in numerous films and TV series, including the long-running drama Wanted starring Rebecca Gibney. He also shares his passion, experience and creativity at the Australian Performing Arts Conservatory (APAC) in Brisbane, which offers degrees such as Screen and Stage (Acting), Screen and Stage (Screen Production) and Musical Theatre, alongside industry-focused masterclasses in acting, production and management.

As the culmination of their degree, 11 APAC cadets are currently filming Outset in Woombye.

The production features local actress Beverley Marcusson alongside a cast of other professional actors and marks the largest film project ever produced at the Woombye backlot, involving more than 25 crew members.

Mirko, who serves as the scriptwriter, director and actor on the project describes Outset as a dystopian, horror, fantasy and science-fiction film set in outback Qld in the near future.

His wife, professional artist and set dresser Amanda Grillini, relishes creating the evocative sets and finding props, including prosthetics.

The production represents their 4th collaboration between APAC and the Sunshine Coast Screen Collective, who have provided 95% of local crew, construction and equipment. Much of the special effects work is being created at the collective’s Peregian Beach Hub. Filming is scheduled for completion in November, after which Outset will be presented on the film festival circuit. Eileen Walder

A snapshot of Australia Data from the 2026 Census provides a snapshot of Australia’s population and international visitors on a particular night. The results are used to better inform governments, at the federal, state and local levels, and organisations when making decisions on a wide range of topics including housing, health care, childcare, schools and economic and regional development. Given the Census is held every 5yrs, it also contributes to a better understanding of changes in Australia.

The first census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) was taken in 1911, but individual states had collected data prior to federation. The first population counts in Australia were known as musters and were conducted as early as 1788 as a means of matching food and other supplies to the number of people needing them. From 1795 the convict population was mustered on an annual basis.

The ABS chooses the timing of the Census so that it minimises the proportion of the population who are not at their usual place of residence. In 1991, the Census date was moved to early August after all mainland states changed from a 3-term to a 4-term school year with school holidays falling near the end of June. Holding the Census outside of school holidays simply meant a greater likelihood of people being at home and better reflecting the spread of the population.
