1929 REO Speedwagon Heavy Duty truck along with the Mouat clan’s increasing additions who attended school on the property. Among the station’s early challenges was a rabbit population so large that 30,000 rabbits were removed annually. A 9-hole golf course and clubhouse were constructed. In 1957 an 8-stand woolshed with swing gates and storage for 100 bales of wool was completed. That year Don bought out Max’s share, later forming a partnership with sons Bill and Bryan. Bill discovered power boat racing and undertook a Rotary Group Study Exchange in Missouri USA.
When Don died in 2000 his sons faced succession problems. Their children all had degrees and other career paths. After 59 years the “once near worthless farm” achieved an almost record price in New Zealand. Nowadays, there is a new family on site. Bill acquired a portion of original river terrace. The Mangaorapa Estate vineyard subsequently grew grapes for Trinity Hill Wines. In Gold Under the Manuka, Bill and wife Carolyn describe a far richer story than can be captured in this review.
