A remarkable community fundraising effort has secured the immediate future of Hoofbeats Sanctuary, allowing the Yandina-based charity to reopen applications for its evidence-based equineassisted mental health programs. In May, Hoofbeats launched an emergency campaign to raise $50,000 after being forced to close enrolments to its programs due to financial pressures. “We’d had to close enrolments to our 12-week mental health programs and were devastated to do that,” said Hoofbeats founder Barb Blashki. “In such financially challenging times, we weren’t sure if our community had the resources to step in to keep our doors open.” The initial response raised $20,000 in the first month, including a $10,000 contribution from a private donor. However, as donations slowed concerns grew about reaching the target. “The original outpouring of support had slowed dramatically and we were extremely worried,” said Barb. Further support came from Coolum Beach Lions Club, which donated $2,000, followed by donations from Waves of Kindness and 2 private donors who each contributed $1,000.
