Acclaimed singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke will headline the Eumundi School of Music's (ESOM) 10th Anniversary Mini Festival, joining some of the region's most promising young musicians for a special celebration at the Eumundi School of Arts on 22 August from 4-10pm.

The festival will shine a spotlight on bands formed by this year’s ESOM scholarship recipients, alongside alumni bands who have grown through the program over the past decade. The evening will culminate with a special performance by songbird Kate Miller-Heidke, who will close out the celebration alongside some of ESOM's exceptional young rockers.

Kate said she is delighted to be part of the school's milestone celebration.

"It's always inspiring to see young musicians finding their voice and discovering the joy of making music together. ESOM has created something really special over the past 10yrs, nurturing creativity, confidence and community through music. I'm thrilled to be part of this celebration and can't wait to share the stage with these incredibly talented young artists."

musicians, who shared a Cont. from p1 vision to create a music mentoring and tuition program that would ignite a passion for live music performance in students already playing music.

"We set out to mentor these young musicians, give them expert tuition, and help them develop stagecraft and live performance skills. A vital part of the program is bringing our young rockers together in bands, with the opportunity to collaborate, create and experience the magic of making great music,” said Katie.

Katie said she was incredibly proud of what ESOM has achieved. "To see more than 300 young people come through the program, forming bands, building confidence and developing lifelong friendships through music, is incredibly moving. ESOM has always been about community, creativity and the joy of making music, and I'm thrilled to celebrate this milestone with our students, alumni and supporters.

Bush dance at Kandanga The Kandanga and District Swimming Club will host its 4th annual bush dance at the Kandanga Public Hall on 1 August. All dances will be taught on the night, so newcomers are welcome to join in the do-si-do, Heel and Toe Polka and more. Music will be provided by The Grey Cats, with callers on hand to guide dancers through the steps. Prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed dancers.

Residents react to new dog rules New dog access laws introduced by Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) on 3 July are changing where residents can exercise their pets, with updated rules affecting sporting fields, beaches, reserves and public recreation areas.

One of the most significant changes is a regionwide ban on dogs on the active playing surface of sporting fields. Council says the measure is designed to protect the health and safety of players and ensure sporting facilities remain suitable for community use. Dogs are still permitted on-leash in surrounding spectator and common areas.

The reforms also include changes to beach access, environmental protection measures and new or expanded off-leash areas in selected locations. Council is encouraging dog owners to check updated signage and online maps before heading out with their pets.

While the sporting field restrictions have attracted attention across the region, opposition has emerged in the Lake Weyba community, where residents are objecting to new restrictions affecting local foreshore trails.

Residents say their concerns are not about seeking additional off-leash areas but about retaining the ability to walk their dogs on-leash along connecting trails they have used responsibly for decades.

“We live in Doonan and there are 2 walks on-leash we can do here. Verrierdale Rise (which is also being targeted) and Lake Weyba. We live in the countryside and there is nowhere – except on the road – to walk our dogs. Weyba is the best thing in our day,” said one local resident.

Community members have criticised the consultation process, arguing there was no 10

dedicated engagement with Lake Weyba residents before the changes were adopted.

They claim many locals only became aware of the restrictions after council had made its decision.

The community's response has focused on concerns about transparency, representation and the loss of access to an area many regard as part of everyday life. Residents are now calling on council to suspend the Lake Weyba restrictions, undertake targeted consultation with affected locals, and reinstate on-leash access along the foreshore trails. A public appeal and a Change. org petition have been launched to demand the reversal of the decision and proper community engagement.

Council maintains the new laws are intended to balance pet ownership, environmental protection, public safety and community recreation.

New tourism worker housing initiative The Qld Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) has received $1M in funding through the Qld Government’s Workforce Connect Fund to launch the Seasonal Mobility and Staff Accommodation Exchange (SMASE). The initiative aims to address one of the tourism sector’s biggest challenges – helping workers find affordable accommodation while filling critical job vacancies.

QTIC CEO Natassia Wheeler said, "One of the biggest challenges facing tourism businesses isn't a lack of jobs – it's finding somewhere for workers to live. In many of Qld's most popular tourism destinations, businesses are telling us they have vacancies they simply can't fill because prospective employees can't access affordable accommodation or afford to relocate.”

The program will be piloted in the Whitsundays, Far North Qld, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast and Southern Great Barrier Reef, with SE Qld serving as a key feeder region. Regional coordinators will support placements, verify accommodation and assist worker relocation.

Tourism supports more than 277,000 jobs across Qld and contributes $45.5B in annual visitor expenditure, making workforce availability one of the industry's most significant challenges.

Reset program revitalises former facility The transformation of the former House with No Steps site at 60 Fellowship Dr, Doonan is demonstrating how underutilised community assets can be revitalised to deliver positive outcomes for local young people and their families.

After sitting largely unused for 8yrs, the property has been restored to support the Regional Reset program, operated by the Ted Noffs Foundation.

The facility now includes accommodation, counselling and learning spaces, a renovated Great Hall, and landscaped gardens featuring a gathering area inspired by Indigenous yarning circles.

The centre supports at-risk young people aged 8-17yo through intensive early-intervention programs aimed at reducing involvement in the justice system. Participants undertake a 1-3 week residential “reset” camp with 24/7 supervision, followed by ongoing support for up to 15 weeks.

Programs include life and employment skills training, mentoring, education, family counselling, cultural engagement and recreational activities.

Council continues to target illegal camping Noosa Council in partnership with Qld Police is continuing targeted efforts to tackle illegal camping across the shire, focusing on protecting public spaces and responding to community concerns.

Council’s Director of Regulation and Development Richard MacGillivray said the campaign targets visitors and others who deliberately ignore local regulations by using public areas as free campgrounds, and is not aimed at people experiencing homelessness.

“When people are genuinely experiencing homelessness, our priority is to connect them with support services rather than take enforcement action,” said Richard.

Recent joint patrols at known hotspots including Tingira Cresc, The Spit, Dog Beach and National Park precincts resulted in 37 infringement notices and 1 caution.

Noosa Council has received almost 300 complaints about illegal overnight camping so far this year, down from more than 400 complaints at the same point in 2025.

In addition to enforcement, Noosa Council is working with camping websites and social media platforms to improve awareness of legal accommodation options. The 2026-27 budget also includes a trial of mobile Licence Plate Recognition technology to deter illegal camping in hotspot areas.

Imperial Hotel loses TAB service Patrons at The Imperial Hotel in Eumundi will no longer have access to TAB facilities after venue owner Comiskey Group and Tabcorp failed to reach agreement on a new 5-year contract. The long-running service was withdrawn on 1 July, following the expiry of the previous agreement on 30 June.

The Imperial is among several Qld venues affected by the decision, alongside Sandstone Point Hotel and other Comiskey Group properties.

Comiskey Group said it rejected Tabcorp’s proposed contract due to increased venue fees, reduced commissions and upfront equipment costs of between $15,000 and $21,000 per venue for TAB infrastructure that would remain owned

by Tabcorp. The company also objected to clauses that would transfer certain regulatory liabilities to venue operators.

Director Rob Comiskey said the proposed terms were not commercially viable. “The new contract would have cost our business hundreds of thousands of dollars each year,” he said.

Tabcorp defended the new model, saying it was part of a $50M investment to upgrade its retail network and attract more customers to pubs and clubs. The company said the revised arrangements involve higher costs for venues but are designed to deliver additional benefits and drive patronage.

Jetstar decision hits tourism The Sunshine Coast is set to lose its direct air link to Auckland after Jetstar confirmed it will suspend the service from 24 October, citing weak demand and rising operating costs.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien and Andrew Wallace for Fisher have condemned 14

the decision, describing it as a major setback for tourism, local businesses and employment across the region.

Mr O’Brien said the route had provided an important connection for visitors and business travellers and warned that increasing aviation taxes, including the Passenger Movement Charge, were placing pressure on airlines operating regional international services.

He said the loss of the route was particularly concerning as the Sunshine Coast prepares to play a significant role in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, when strong international connectivity will be vital for attracting visitors and boosting economic activity.

Mr Wallace said every international flight supported accommodation providers, restaurants, retailers and tourism operators, and argued that rising government charges were making regional routes less viable.

Both MPs pledged to continue advocating for stronger aviation connections to ensure the Sunshine Coast remains accessible and competitive.

Eumundi Voice donates $20,000 The May round for donations raised by your community magazine Eumundi Voice has brought big smiles to 10 organisations who shared in $20,000 donated to community-based projects.

At a special event at the QCWA Hall on 9 July, Maree Thomson, President of Eumundi Rotary welcomed guests and spoke of her vision for Rotary’s contribution to the local community.

“It was inspiring to see the breadth of community initiatives supported through this year’s Eumundi Rotary Initiatives Ltd (ERIL) grants program. While each organisation addresses different needs, they are united by a shared commitment to enriching lives and building stronger, more connected communities. This dedication closely reflects the values, goals and vision of Eumundi Rotary. We are proud to support their valuable work and the positive impact they make every day.”

ERIL Chair Greg Ison and Past-President Tania Broadbent presented certificates, and recipients shared how the funds will be used.

Rotary For Mental Health (R4MH) received funds for their distinctive purple shirts, worn on Fridays, to spread the awareness message about Domestic and Family Violence. In a related project, R4MH were given money towards a pilot program for 25 school nurses to educate Sunshine Coast school students about Respectful Relationships through the Love Bites program.

“The first 17 school nurses have graduated from 16

facilitators training and are assigned to schools.

They focus on teaching teenagers self and mutual respect for others – a key element of the Say No to Domestic and Family Violence project.” Tex Pipke, Rotary District 9620 Area Governor.

BotBuilders Robotics received funds to deliver fortnightly STEM sessions for students and teachers.

be that girl Doonan local Cora is making her mark on the Australian music scene with the release of her debut EP, be that girl.

The 20yo singer-songwriter, who first developed her musical talents through the Eumundi School of Music scholarship program, has spent years honing her craft. That journey comes together across 6 tracks exploring the highs and lows of growing up, self-discovery and the realities of modern girlhood.

Blending elements of alternative pop with early 2000s pop-rock influences, the EP features previously released singles (boy)cott, be that girl and gotta be done, alongside 3 new songs, including the focus track she's so pretty.

Produced and co-written with Chris Collins (Royel Otis, Kita Alexander and The Veronicas) in Byron Bay, she's so pretty tackles the pressures of comparison and self-image. Cora describes the song as reflecting the experience many young women face when navigating expectations around appearance and identity.

The EP's other tracks cover themes ranging from friendship and heartbreak to confidence and resilience. Viral single (boy)cott has already attracted more than 300,000 Spotify streams, while songs such as take a hike, your toy and gotta be done showcase Cora's sharp songwriting and knack for turning personal experiences into relatable stories.

Although still early in her career, Cora has enjoyed a strong start. She emerged onto the national music scene in 2025 with (boy)cott, earning a place in the Top 50 of the prestigious Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition. She was also selected as a showcase artist at BIGSOUND 2025 in Brisbane.

More recently, Cora received 3 nominations at the 2026 Sunshine Coast Music Awards, including Young Artist of the Year, Song of the Year for (boy)cott and the Rising Star Award, as well as performing at the ceremony.

Local talent selected for CMAA Academy Black Mountain's Jeb McCartin has been recognised as one of Australia's most promising young musicians after being selected to attend the Jeb McCartin prestigious 2026 Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA) Academy of Country Music Junior Course.

Jeb attended the renowned Academy in Tamworth earlier this month as part of the instrumental stream, where he further distinguished himself by receiving the Maton Guitars Scholarship, an award recognising outstanding talent and potential among instrumental students.

The week-long academy brought together 28 emerging artists from across Australia for intensive training in songwriting, performance and music industry skills. Under the guidance of some of the country's leading artists and industry professionals, participants gained valuable experience, developed their craft and built important industry connections.

For Jeb, the experience was both inspiring and eye-opening.

"I loved going to the Academy of Country Music," he said.

Having not previously played a great deal of country music, Jeb said he enjoyed discovering different aspects of the genre.

"I really enjoyed learning all the new aspects of country music that are different from what you often hear in popularised country music," he said.

One of the highlights was meeting like-minded young musicians from across the country.

"I loved making new friends who shared the same

interests and enthusiasm for music that I have," he said.

As a member of the instrumental stream, Jeb also had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from world-class musicians.

"I got to play with world-class musicians and learn how to play in a band and be a backing musician.

I learnt a lot from them and really enjoyed the experience," he said.

The CMAA Academy has played a significant role in developing the careers of many successful Australian country music artists and remains one of the nation's most respected pathways for emerging talent.

Jeb's selection and scholarship are a proud achievement and highlight the strength of young musical talent emerging from the region.

HISTORY My memories of the Eumundi Butter Factory The recent article in Eumundi Voice 144, The Rise and Fall of the Eumundi Butter Factory, brought

back memories for me as a child. My father Fred Hartshorn was the last manager before it closed in 1974. He was also the pasteuriser, as they couldn't find anybody skilled enough to undertake that role. The cream had to be pasteurised (heated) first before it could be made into butter. I remember once that a dead cat was found in one of the cream cans picked up from a local farmer.

I'm sure that the cream was still used, as nothing was wasted.

The churns used for making the butter were huge in my young eyes. I can still remember sticking a hand in and getting a chunk of butter and eating it! Cholesterol, what cholesterol?

The waste product from the factory was piped out to the abattoir along Eumundi Noosa Rd – previously called Doonan Rd – for the pigs. There was an awful smell when the pipe burst.

Ward St in Eumundi was also named after Allan Ward, a previous manager of the butter factory.

I would love to see these old sites remembered.

Perhaps interpretative signage explaining the factory's past could be erected.

Qld Garden Show Thousands of gardening enthusiasts flocked to Nambour Showgrounds for the 2026 Qld Garden Show, celebrating plants, expert advice and community spirit. The 3-day event featured more than 360 exhibitors, over 60,000 plants for sale each day and Australia’s largest gardening speaker program, with more than 90 free presentations.

Greenlife Industry Qld CEO Colin Fruk said strong crowds highlighted Queenslanders’ passion for gardening and the event’s value to the Sunshine Coast economy. The show is expected to contribute more than $10M locally.

Noosa Women’s Shed turns 8

Australian Wearable Art 2026 Congratulations to everyone involved in the Australian Wearable Art Festival 2026 where fashion, sculpture, storytelling and performance collided in such creative ways. Judging criteria across all categories included concept, execution, silhouette, skill and impact.

Special congratulations to Supreme Award winner Kym Cunningham for her design AI: the new god … or a monster in disguise? Built from recycled cardboard, e-waste, industrial plastics and heat-treated CDs, Kym took the debris of the digital age and asked, “What have we actually built?”

This year’s festival scaled up to a bigger venue at the Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort, a far cry from its humble beginnings under the stars at Eumundi Square in 2019. Visit: australianwearableart.com.au.

Eight years after the Noosa Women’s Shed was incorporated, its members have much to celebrate.

The Shed now has more than 80 members, who have worked tirelessly to raise funds and bring to life their vision of a welcoming space where women can learn new skills and build friendships.

The milestone was made even more special by news that Noosa Council had approved a grant to connect sewerage to the Shed – a birthday present that could not have been better timed.

Merv Bignall: Eumundi’s unforgettable larrikin Mervyn “Merv” Bignall was far more than a Vietnam veteran and Yandina-Eumundi RSL Sub Branch Life Member – he was a true Eumundi character whose wit, stories and larger-than-life personality made him unforgettable. Whether you knew him as “4X Merv” for his love of a cold 4X Bitter, or “Swervin’ Mervin” after a few too many, he was rarely far from the centre of attention and always had a yarn ready to tell.

Merv was fiercely proud of his Army service in Vietnam. He marched on Anzac Day for as long as he was physically able, wearing his service medals with pride and ensuring the sacrifices of his generation would never be forgotten. But while many respected him for his military service, it was his unique personality that endeared him to many.

The front bar at Joe’s Waterhole (now Matso’s Brewery) was Merv’s kingdom. Holding court from his well-known corner, he entertained friends, strangers and anyone willing to stop for a chat. After a few beers, he was known to loudly declare, “Whiskey!”, down a couple, and then set off to hitchhike home.

His eccentric habits became part of local folklore.

“I remember I was all of 15, stinking hot day … we were driving past Eumundi School and here was Merv hitchhiking in his undies!”

Stories like these became cherished memories, retold with laughter whenever locals gathered.

Like many larger-than-life personalities, Merv could sometimes be misunderstood. Beneath his gruff exterior, was a man whose company was 22

well worth the effort.

“I remember getting in trouble lots of times, he was always a bit sour! You definitely had to be patient to see what he was really about, but once you did you realised he was definitely worth lending an ear to.”

Merv’s sharp mind and love of music gave rise to one of his most enduring legacies – Merv’s Music Trivia Board – which still remains displayed in his corner of the front bar. He would fill the board with song titles and challenge patrons to name the original artists.

Getting the answer almost right wasn't good enough. If someone named a cover artist instead of the original performer, Merv was quick to set them straight. Once every answer had been completed, he would wipe the board clean and start again, ready to test the next generation of music lovers.

Even the way he watched television was uniquely Merv.

“He would sit in his ‘corner’ and people would wonder why he stared at himself in a car-side mirror that was in front of him. Not knowing he was watching the TV behind him!”

Moments like these captured the clever, quirky humour that made him such memorable company.

His determination was equally legendary. One Anzac Day, while getting ready for the march, Merv's commitment to looking the part created a memory that still makes people smile.

“One Anzac Day as I was working to help set up, Merv came to me in his old army uniform and begged me to help button up his jacket over his beer paunch. We struggled and laughed for ages as he pulled in his tummy. Finally, and with jacket straining, it was done. He wouldn’t have been able to breathe normally all day in my opinion.”

When Covid restrictions and later renovations to the pub made it harder for Merv to visit his beloved corner of the pub, staff and patrons felt his absence deeply. His familiar presence, quick wit and colourful observations had become part of daily life in Eumundi.

Today, a memorial bench and Merv’s corner stand as fitting tributes to a proud Vietnam veteran, devoted RSL Life Member, music enthusiast,

How Australians feel about the world The Lowy Institute is an independent Australian think-tank founded in 2003 to conduct research into international political, strategic and economic issues from an Australian perspective.

For the past 21yrs, Lowy has conducted a poll into how Australians feel about the world. Their 2026 findings were released in late June.

Australians’ trust in the United States (US) to act responsibly in the world has fallen to 31%, the lowest level ever recorded in the Lowy Institute Poll. By contrast, trust in China rose 8 points from last year to 28%, narrowing the gap with the US to just 3 points. That gap was 53 points in 2022.

Australians remain trusting of liberal democracies.

For the 6th year running, Japan was the most trusted power, with 89% of Australians saying they trust Japan to act responsibly in the world.

Germany emerged as the next most trusted power (83%), followed by the UK at 81%. Trust in Indonesia (57%) and India (50%) remained moderate. New Zealand topped the “feelings thermometer” for the 16th year at 86%, followed

by Canada at 79%.

More than half of Australians (54%) identified China as being the most important and powerful country in 10yrs time. By contrast, only 31% of Australians thought the US would be the most powerful in a decade (up 4 points from last year’s poll). Few Australians saw an alternative to either of the 2 superpowers. In response to a new question in the 2026 survey, 64% of Australians said the US should prioritise stabilising its relationship with China over challenging its role in the world.

In this year’s poll, a clear majority of Australians (61%) saw China more as an economic partner than a security threat, up 11 points from 2025.

Support for the bilateral trade relationship was strong, with a significant majority of Australians saying we should trade with China ‘more’ or at ‘about the same’ level as now (77%).

Eight in ten Australians said they disapproved of the way President Trump has handled the US military campaign in Iran. However, nearly threequarters of Australians (73%) still said the alliance with the US remained either ‘very important’ or ‘fairly important’ to Australia’s security, albeit down 7 points from last year’s Poll.

Reversionary income stream Part of organising your superannuation is to consider your situation: how much income do you need, government mandatory drawdown rates, and what you want to happen when you pass away.

In Eumundi Voice 145 we looked at binding and non-binding nominations. In this issue, we focus on reversionary pensions.

The idea is that your existing pension, upon your death, reverts (switches) to a nominated person who receives your pension as an ongoing income stream. The amount may be set by your super fund and may be less than 100% of what you were receiving. One big advantage is less paperwork, and it can happen relatively quickly.

Your nominated reversionary beneficiary must be an eligible dependent, such as legally married or de facto spouse, children under 18, 18-25 who are financially dependent on you, or a child with a permanent disability.

Unlike a standard binding death benefit nomination, which you may have to renew every 3 years, the reversionary nomination typically does not expire, so you don’t have to remember to renew it.

Remember that your superannuation funds are managed by a Trustee, such as AMP Super or HostPlus, who determines how your remaining super is distributed. Superannuation exists in a separate legal framework and doesn’t automatically form part of your deceased estate

and isn’t governed by the terms of your Will.

Each super fund has its own rules, and the ATO has rules and requirements which are complex, so it’s essential to think about the requirements that best suit your own circumstances. The situation with SMFS can be more complicated.

As part of your planning, consider the impact on the beneficiary’s Transfer Balance Cap – the lifetime limit on how much money you can hold in tax-free retirement accounts – as the full value of your reverted pension will count towards their TBC. The ATO gives 12 months to manage any issues with exceeding a TBC. There are new government mandates for taxation for superannuation balances of $3M or more, so consider the effect of Total Super Balance for your beneficiary when both your superannuation balances are combined for the reversionary income stream.

EUMUNDI ROTARY CLUB

Project Kemabolo Following the article in Eumundi Voice 140 – One Couple’s Dream for Kemabolo – Eumundi Rotary has established an initiative known as Project Kemabolo. The project aims to provide basic health care for the village and surrounding communities, while also progressing the design and construction of a small hospital. The first stage will involve refurbishing an old Aid Post, which was built in the 1960s. Over time, the facility is intended to become a small hospital and clinic capable of meeting the health needs of both Kemabolo and the wider district.

To date, the project has successfully established a full-time nurse Joanne, to manage health care in the village. She is already providing triage, preand post-natal care, and treatment for elderly residents. This is a significant milestone, as before the project began the villagers had to travel many kilometres to Port Moresby and were often turned away without receiving care. Joanne now travels to the nearby town of Kwikila to collect

government-issued medicines and returns to Kemabolo to treat those in need. This work also includes a vaccination program.

Eumundi Rotarians Rocky and Kilagi Nielsen, have recently returned from Kemabolo after supervising the commencement of construction of a secure workshop and accommodation facility for volunteers and visitors who will assist with the program. Kilagi reports that the project has revitalised the entire village, with community members contributing wherever they can.

Women are carrying water from the well, while children and men are carrying bags of sand up the hill to the building site. Together, they are helping to make the concrete base for the 8mx7m building.

The club is also developing a birthing kit program, which has attracted generous donations of sheets, pillowcases, baby clothes and other essential items for inclusion in the kits. The first workshop to package the kits was held on 16 July.

Other initiatives by Eumundi Rotary include the

development of a healthcare program for Joanne to use with locals, and a healthcare curriculum for the school. The club is seeking assistance from experienced health care providers to support this work.

Spatap devices have also been sent to the village to help conserve water and teach children the importance of handwashing and hygiene. A Spatap is a silicone fitting that transforms any bottle of water instantly into a tap. This program is already working well.

Once the accommodation building is complete, the club will seek volunteers who can give 1 or 2 weeks of their time to assist, support and teach healthcare and basic trades, as well as help with the construction of the hospital.

Mountain Marathon The Noosa Ultra-Trail will add a 7th distance in 2027 with the introduction of the Mountain Marathon (MM45), a challenging 45km point-topoint event featuring 1,200m of elevation gain.

The course showcases some of the most spectacular sections of the event, beginning with a climb to Middle Lookout, traversing Woondum National Park, and ascending to the iconic James McKane Lookout before descending into Cooran.

Runners then complete the final 9km through Tuchekoi National Park to the finish in Pomona.

With a generous 10hr cut-off, the MM45 is designed for runners, walkers and hikers seeking an unforgettable trail experience.

Courtesy buses will operate hourly from Pomona back to Tewantin, where participants can enjoy the event atmosphere with family and friends.

Entries for all 7 distances open on 1 September, with early entrants in the 25km and MM45 events receiving priority access to early bus services.

Nana and baby

The Nana Club (Part 1) Our secret club had just 4 members. We met weekdays. Friday’s meeting had an agenda, business arising, actions and plans officially recorded in a ledger. Meetings solved many problems and established a lifelong bond between myself and my grandsons. Once they could read and write legibly, my grandsons and I took turns as Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Nana Club.

It started when one brother was in big trouble.

He forged his mother’s signature on a letter to be returned to the principal. Signing the letter as “His Mum” was a bit of a giveaway!

Telling the truth was agreed, and the Nana Club began.

Good behaviour, kind deeds, great ideas etc. meant a dollar in that individual’s special money box. Misbehaviours were discussed and saw a EOFY OFFER

Now adults, the boys and I often laugh as we reread the old minutes, while Mum is astonished by all the things we spared her from knowing at the time.

I adored being a grandparent: sharing dawn swimming training; weekends at carnivals; after school sports’ practices; school holiday adventures; make-believe games and sharing juvenile secrets, laughter and tears.

Recently, I overheard 2 ladies complaining about their grandchildren’s poor behaviour, lack of respect and how they hated childminding. Has being a grandparent become such an unpleasant duty?

A parent’s role is to love, nurture, protect and educate each child, yet parenting today is shaped by very different social expectations and family circumstances from those of previous generations. But do parents realise that the role of grandparents has changed too?

Many grandparents are still working well into their 60s. Others are discovering cruises, joining gyms, learning new languages, or simply enjoying the peace of reading, gardening or painting. Naturally, this affects how involved they can be with their grandchildren. Most do want an active role within the family but dare not admit they don’t want the responsibility of childminding, especially if taken for granted, unpaid or unappreciated.

The Australian Seniors 2026 survey found an estimated 1 in 2 grandparents over 50 in Australia reported that they actively provide some care

to grandchildren. Among those who provide regular care, 3 in 5 typically do so 2 or more days per week. Over 2 in 5 do so 10 hours or more per week. The great majority were Nanas. Poppas are generally used for support, emergency or occasional childcare. Almost all wanted to help financially, spending an average $3,066 of their personal money per child each year. Some had considerably dipped into their retirement funds.

Most agreed grandparenting improves ties with their adult children but tensions arise through lack of communication and differing parenting styles, especially discipline and lack of respect or appreciation. Differing grandparenting styles between the mother’s and the father’s parents also cause tension.

Margaret said, “I’m asleep by 8pm. Constantly on the go, all I do is feed, change, bathe, and play with kids. At the weekend, my friends are with their grandchildren, so I spend a lot of time alone.”

The excitement and overwhelming love felt with a first grandchild sees Nana immediately offer to mind the precious baby, especially if the parents must work or study. Once started how can you back out?

Global Youth Rugby 7s heads to Sunshine Coast The Sunshine Coast will welcome one of the world’s premier youth Rugby 7s tournaments for the first time when the Global Youth Sevens Australia takes place at Kawana Sports Precinct, Bokarina, on December 12&13.

Sevens Rugby is a speedy, skilful and social game with 2 seven-minute halves with 7 players per team. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

Featuring U14, U16 and U18 boys’ and girls’ divisions, the tournament is expected to attract teams from across Qld, Australia and overseas, bringing emerging rugby talent together on the Sunshine Coast.

Building on the success of a pilot event held on the Gold Coast in 2023, the tournament reflects the growing popularity of Rugby 7s ahead of its continued prominence on the road to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Since 2016, the Global Youth Sevens has helped develop future stars of the sport, with more than 70 former participants progressing to national honours, including Olympic, Commonwealth Games and World Championship representation.

Tour de France Femmes For decades the Tour de France was exclusive to men, only rectified as recently as 2022 when the Tour de France Femmes made its debut as an annual event for women cyclists. The 2026 Tour de France Femmes runs from 1-9 August and covers 1,175km through Switzerland and France, including Mount Ventoux, a notoriously difficult climb.

The idea of having a women’s Tour de France had been around for decades, and a one-off event was held in France in 1955. From 1984 to 2009, annual women’s races were held under differing names but were not under the Tour de France umbrella.

They suffered from lack of financial stability and poor media coverage.

In 2013 a group of professional women cyclists began lobbying for a women’s Tour de France.

The following year, Tour de France organisers agreed to a 1-day race for women known as La Course, on the Champs-Elysees in advance of the final stage of the men’s race. From 2014-2021 La Course was held in different locations around France but always in conjunction with the men’s Tour de France. While the women’s race was initially praised for shining a light on women’s cycling, it was criticised for not allowing the women to cycle a full course and for not having a challenging enough route.
