PROGRESS ON SHOWGROUND'S LIGHTING UPGRADE After more than 5yrs of dedicated effort, the working party behind the push for full field lighting at the Eumundi Showgrounds continues to make significant progress.

Although funding for the project is still being finalised, substantial groundwork has been completed. Following an extensive selection process, Pure Lighting has been appointed to deliver the project. The company will oversee the entire contract from design through to installation, at an estimated cost of $160,000 – an investment

widely regarded as a major step forward for the Eumundi community.

The project will meet strict industry standards for sports lighting, as well as controlling obtrusive light. Careful design will ensure there is no adverse impact on nearby residential areas to the south or traffic along the Bruce Highway to the west.

Pure Lighting’s experience in delivering compliant lighting solutions is well established, including their recent work at the Maroochydore Swans Rugby Union fields.

The installation will feature Cont. from p1 8x1200W LED sports floodlights mounted on 4x18m poles, providing illumination levels exceeding 110 lux – suitable for competitive night matches across a range of sports including soccer, touch football and rugby union.

In preparation for construction, soil testing has been completed and building certification secured, enabling work to commence as soon as funding is confirmed. The Eumundi Showgrounds Committee has covered these preliminary costs.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien has expressed strong support for the project, endorsing a joint funding application submitted to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The application represents a broad coalition of local organisations including sporting clubs, schools and community groups such as Eumundi State School, Eumundi Dragons Rugby Union Club, Eumundi Magpies Football Club and the Eumundi Showgrounds Committee, among others.

The showgrounds play a vital role as a hub for sport, education and community activity in the region. Upgraded lighting will significantly expand the facility’s usability, allowing for safe evening training and competition, increased participation and the development of new teams, including those for women and girls.

Beyond sport, the improved lighting will open the door for a wider range of community events.

Outdoor movie nights, concerts, festivals and the annual carols event are just some of the activities that could benefit from enhanced facilities, strengthening community engagement across the region.

With key approvals already secured from the Dept

of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development, Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) and the Eumundi Showgrounds Committee, the project is well positioned to move forward. The strong local support and collaborative effort behind the initiative highlight its importance to the future of the Eumundi community. Noosa Alive!

Hot on the heels of the Noosa Food and Wine Festival comes Noosa Alive! The event runs from 17-26 July, delivering arts and cultural events over 10 days. Some events have sold out already but there are still plenty to choose from.

Try the Slow Food Noosa film night in Cooroy on 20 July when Big Night screens alongside a 3-course dinner. The story follows 2 Italian immigrant brothers – Primo (Shalhoub), a perfectionist chef and Secondo (Stanley Tucci), a pragmatic businessman – as they struggle to keep their authentic restaurant, Paradise, afloat.

Could a neighbourhood centre benefit Eumundi?

The question of whether Eumundi would benefit from a neighbourhood centre is being put to the local community. Residents and organisations are being invited to consider the potential advantages of establishing such a service – and to share their ideas about what it could look like.

Neighbourhood Centres – as described by Neighbourhood Centres Qld – are inclusive community spaces where everyone is welcome.

They act as hubs where people can connect through events and activities, access support services, and contribute to building a stronger, more connected community. Typically these centres are not-for-profit and community-led, and often supported by state and local government funding, with staff working alongside dedicated volunteers.

Early conversations are already underway with community groups including Eumundi CWA, Eumundi Rotary, Eumundi Police and Eumundi State School, who have been approached to share feedback and identify local needs. A broader consultation with other organisations is also in progress, with the goal of understanding whether there is sufficient demand – and if so, what priorities should be addressed.

Importantly, the concept being explored is not just about creating a physical building but about establishing a coordinated service. While a facility could provide a useful hub for activities and support, the focus is on delivering services that respond directly to community needs and potentially linking together existing initiatives.

Initial ideas for services are wide-ranging and reflect the diversity of Eumundi’s community.

These include: Welfare, health and safety support, such as transport assistance and mental health services.

Social connection opportunities, particularly for new residents, older community members and non-English-speaking families.

Practical assistance, including food parcels, crisis support, clothing and school uniforms, help with basic housing setup, literacy support, IT assistance and access to a Justice of the Peace.

Shared community spaces, offering meeting rooms, training opportunities and hosting activities such as a Repair Café.

Digital and office support, such as shared access to computers, software, photocopying, scanning and accessories for people working from home, local micro and small businesses, creative workers and market stallholders.

While the list is broad, there is recognition that a neighbourhood centre cannot be “everything for everyone”. The aim is to identify key areas of need where focused services could make a meaningful difference and build a strong case for future support and funding.

Community input will play a vital role in shaping the next steps. Residents are encouraged to contribute their ideas, highlight local priorities, and help determine whether a neighbourhood centre could enhance life in Eumundi.

Cooroy Community School opening In 2027 a new progressive, community and nature-based school will open in Cooroy. The Cooroy Community School will have 25 positions available for students in Yrs1&2 who turn 6,7 or 8 in 2007. The school will open Monday to Friday from 8am-2pm. Enrolments opened on 20 June.

Doonella Bridge upgrade From 6 July until early December, Doonella Bridge in Tewantin will operate with 1-way traffic as upgrade works get underway. Vehicles will be able to travel eastbound from Tewantin to Noosaville, while westbound traffic into Tewantin will be diverted via Goodchap St, Eumundi Noosa Rd and Beckmans Rd. The bridge upgrade includes structural strengthening, new safety barriers, repairing underwater bridge piles and improving the Hilton Tce approach. Marine access beneath the bridge will be closed during the entire project.

Noosa Council says the change is necessary to carry out essential upgrades to the 68yo bridge, extending its lifespan by up to 50yrs. Modelling showed a single lane stop-go setup would cause major congestion, with queues of up to 3km, making the 1-way system the preferred option.

Around 20,000 vehicles use the bridge daily, so delays are expected. However, buses, school transport and emergency vehicles will still be allowed westbound access using priority signals.

Pedestrians and cyclists can continue using the shared pathway.

The project includes structural strengthening, new safety barriers and repairs to bridge piles, with some night works planned. Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time or consider alternative transport options. Visit: t.ly/tIyHJ.

Food delivery scams The Australian Govt has released a warning about the latest scam: “Scammers are targeting people who use food delivery platforms, including restaurants, customers and delivery workers.

They may pretend to be DoorDash, Uber Eats, a restaurant or a customer.

They may contact you about an order, refund, cancellation, account issue or payment problem.

They may ask for a 1-time code, login details, your mobile number or bank information. They use these details to take over accounts, change payment settings or redirect money. Scammers may claim they can see your order but demand you provide additional details or payment outside the app in order to process it.”

Scammers can redirect the money delivery workers have earned, by claiming the order was cancelled, or a mistaken double order, and asking for bank details to (helpfully!) make compensation.

So, be extra careful when responding to 1-time codes, or generic alerts about your account, or if you are told to respond immediately, as these are often clues to a scam. Visit: scamwatch.gov.au.

Walk to celebrate 60yrs To mark 60yrs of community service, the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club is stepping up with a 60km sponsored walk from Mooloolaba to Tewantin.

Since being chartered in 1967, the club has contributed more than $2.4M to the community, including over $50,000 in the past year alone.

The club is seeking support to continue this vital work. Their ageing food trailers – now 25 and 30yo – and the outdated clubhouse no longer meet the needs of members or the wider community.

Funds raised will go towards a new food trailer and the transformation of the Lions Den into a more functional, inclusive hub for meetings, projects and community activities.

The 3-day walk from the 10-12 July, will see participants cover 20km each day, led by Lion Steve – fresh from knee replacement surgery – and supported by fellow Lions and volunteers.

Eumundi on Show Eumundi State School (ESS) was spectacularly on show on 25 June celebrating the learning, achievement and creativity of its students.

Parents, friends and community guests joined the whole school, enjoying performances by the orchestra, choirs and dancing from the Glee Club. Especially entertaining was the novel Garage Band performing a stirring Can You Hear The People Sing? and an enthusiastic selfchoreographed dance performance.

After the performances, every classroom and learning area was on view, full of creative artwork, model making, ancestry displays, scientific and technical experiments and environmental experiences. Room by room, students proudly welcomed everyone to admire and discuss their work and that of their classmates.

Eumundi On Show was a morning made memorable by the impressive standard and creativity of students' work, dedication of 14

teachers, the love and care for the environment, and emphasis for every child to develop their personal talents in a warm, encouraging, educational environment.

Eumundi Rotary marks a year of community impact The Rotary Club of Eumundi celebrated a year of service, fellowship and community impact at its annual changeover dinner at Sala Thai on 25 June.

Eumundi Rotarians, their families, community leaders and members of other Rotary clubs gathered to reflect on the club’s achievements over the past year and look ahead to the year to come.

Outgoing President Tania Broadbent expressed her pride in the club’s achievements, noting the breadth of projects supported locally and internationally.

International highlights included the club’s ongoing support for Kemabolo in Papua New Guinea, where Eumundi Rotary contributed to improvements in health and education. This work included assistance with establishing a medical aid post and support to produce birthing kits for distribution.

Youth and inclusion also remained strong priorities, with the club supporting Rotary youth programs and helping local young people pursue development opportunities across sporting and academic activities.

Closer to home, the club assisted people experiencing homelessness, supported organisations that honour service personnel on Anzac Day, took part in school breakfasts and community barbecues, recognised kindness through its awards program and contributed to Clean Up Australia Day. Throughout the evening, each Avenue of Service leader highlighted achievements across community, youth, international service, club service, vocation and the club’s major project, Eumundi Voice magazine.

Barb was acknowledged for helping ensure the smooth running of many club projects behind the scenes, including one of the club’s major fundraisers supporting the Noosa Hill Climb events.

Greg Ison and Julie Cross were also recognised for their “commitment to the cause” reflecting their dedication to international projects and running of the EarlyAct Club at Eumundi State School.

End-of-year donations included the purchase of 10 Shelterbags for people experiencing homelessness, as well as support for Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) and PolioPlus.

Incoming President Maree Thomson accepted the Chain of Office with the assistance of Past District Governor Sue Mulraney before sharing her vision for the year ahead.

Elijah Haworth and the Eumundi Butter Factory Reg Haworth (1927-2013) was the eldest son of Elijah Haworth, the first manager of the Eumundi Butter factory. He tells his father’s story in this extract from Reg’s memoir – Such A Clear Moonlight Night.

My father, Elijah Haworth (1890-1957), was the first manager of the Eumundi Butter Factory. Dad grew up on the family dairy farm and worked at the Caboolture Co-operative Dairy before he enlisted in WWI. On his return from active service, he supervised the construction of the Eumundi Butter Factory and took over its management when it opened in November 1920 and ran it for 25 years.

Dad was short (only 5’6” tall) and stocky. He walked with a limp because he had lost some toes in the war, but he was surprisingly fast, especially if he was angry with you! He was a keen fisherman, smoked his own hams, and played in the Eumundi cricket team. He came from Salvation Army stock, and I remember him playing his cornet from our veranda in Cook St, as the sun went down.

For nearly 20yrs the factory prospered. Eumundi butter won awards at the RNA show in Brisbane and was exported to the UK. Dad seemed popular with the farmers who supplied cream to the factory, and I think he was respected by his employees, as until 1939 there was practically no turnover of staff. He was certainly very proud of his factory.

But when WWII broke out, many men from the factory enlisted or were conscripted, so those who stayed behind took on extra duties. Over the next 6yrs, Dad helped to establish the Kenilworth Cheese Factory, and for a while had to run both the Pomona and Eumundi Butter factories, while taking up military duties with the Home Guard and as an Air Raid Precautions (ARP) warden.

By 1945 it became too much for him. He became breathless, suffered bad chest pains, and was eventually hospitalised with ‘Cardiac Asthma’. He was given morphine to ease the pain, became addicted to it, and remained at home, an invalid.

Then a new doctor at Nambour Hospital gradually weaned Dad away from the morphine, saying he would soon have him back at work.

He continued to improve and was ready to start work again. But I came home from school one afternoon to find him slumped in a squatter’s chair on the veranda, looking ashen. He called quietly to me and said, “Look at this.” ‘This’ was a very terse letter from the company, saying that the board had decided to dispense with his services. Dad was shattered! Within a few days he had another heart attack.

Helping native wildlife There are a number of wildlife rescuers in Div 9 and they often rely on the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Eumundi – an amazing not-for-profit group dedicated to saving native wildlife. If you want to help but don’t have the time to volunteer, they are often looking for donations of items they can use in their centre. Their recent towel drive means they are fully stocked but recently they were calling for a bottle warmer and little tart dishes which they use for baby possum feeds. The best way to check what’s needed and what isn’t, is to check and follow their Facebook page @WildlifeRehabilitationCentreAtEumundi.

You can do your bit by using warmcoloured lighting only where needed, aiming lights downward, reducing brightness and installing timers or motion sensors.

It is hard to believe we are already in July, with half the year behind us. Eumundi Police have continued to stay busy responding to calls for service, conducting proactive patrols, and carrying out enforcement activities across the local area.

At the end of June, A1 Storage on West Eumundi Rd was broken into twice. On the first occasion at around 4.30am, a person gained access to the premises by cutting a hole in the fence and attempting to open the security gates. The same person returned a few nights later, using a car to force open the security gates before attempting to steal a caravan. The owners of A1 Storage confronted the person, who left before police arrived. A 23yo Gympie man was later located in Cooroibah and arrested. He has since been charged with 43 offences and remanded in custody. He is next due to appear in Gympie Magistrates Court on 17 August. Police allege the man had been involved in a crime spree, mainly in the Gympie area before gradually moving further afield.

Another burglary was also reported at a residence in Doonan. The occupants advised that while they were away from the home for a few hours during the day, the house was entered and property, including jewellery and cash were stolen.

Investigations are continuing.

Suspicious activity can be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, Policelink on 131 444, or directly to Eumundi Police Station.

A reminder that Eumundi Police Station is not a 24-hour station. Michelle – our fabulous Administrative Officer – has the station open every Monday and Wednesday between 8am4pm. Eumundi officers are rostered at varying times across 7-days a week. When Eumundi officers are not on duty, we are fortunate to have support from Cooroy and Pomona Police, who attend matters in Eumundi as needed. We also provide assistance to them when their officers are unavailable. Overnight, urgent calls for service will continue to be responded to by police from Noosa, Coolum or Nambour.

Finally, Eumundi Police have received an increase in calls about noisy motorbikes being ridden on private property. Although riding a motorbike on private property is not unlawful, and the bike does not need to be registered nor the rider licensed, excessive noise can still cause concern.

The same noise laws that apply to loud stereos or parties can also apply to motorbikes. When a complaint is received, police will attend subject to availability and assess the noise. If the noise is deemed excessive, a Noise Abatement Direction may be issued, preventing the noise for 48 hours.

This is only a short-term solution, and we aim to work with everyone involved to achieve a fair outcome. If you ride a motorbike on private property, please consider your neighbours and the broader community by looking at ways to reduce noise, limiting riding time and being mindful of the time of day.

The event also showed that electrification extends well beyond the garage. Local restaurateurs Luc and Pascal Turschwell drew crowds with live induction cooking demonstrations, proving the technology can be fast, healthy and capable of delivering gourmet flavour without relying on gas.

Electrifying Everything More than 6,500 people turned out for the annual Noosa EV & Electrify Everything Expo at Noosa Junction on 21 June, highlighting the Sunshine Coast community’s growing appetite for practical advice on cutting energy and transport costs while reducing carbon emissions.

Hosted by local not-for-profit Zero Emissions Noosa (ZEN), the free event is now Qld’s largest community expo dedicated to transport, home and business electrification. Now in its 8th year, the Expo brought together 65 exhibitors, 50 volunteers, sponsors and community partners showcasing electric vehicles, e-bikes, home batteries, solar systems, EV chargers and energy management solutions.

Visitor feedback suggests the expo is helping people make confident, informed choices, with 3 in 4 attendees saying the event assisted them with an EV or e-mobility purchasing decision, while 85% said they intended to purchase within the next 12 months.

Flying through the glass ceiling When Deborah Lawrie flew from Alice Springs to Darwin on 22 January 1980, the sky did not fall in – but she certainly made headlines. At the controls was Australia’s first female pilot hired by a major airline. Now living between Sydney and Peregian Beach, Deb still flies regular rosters with Virgin Australia. After 46 years in the cockpit she is believed to be the longest-serving female pilot in the world.

Her achievement followed a 2yr battle with Sir Reginald Ansett before the Victorian Equal Opportunity Board. He refused to train her, stating male pilots were stronger, and that menstrual cycles, pregnancy and childbirth disruptions would jeopardise safety and incur extra costs to the airline.

Her recent autobiography – Touching the Sky – tells the story of her inspirational fight for gender equality as a pilot. Last year the play Fly Girl was staged at Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre, and a movie is now planned.

Born in Sydney in 1953, Deb later moved to Melbourne where her father earned his pilot’s licence. At 14, she studied aviation theory alongside him. Two flying lessons at 16 confirmed her determination to become a pilot.

A competitive basketball player, she brought the same tenacity to flying, gaining her private pilot’s licence at 18 and her commercial licence in 1973, 24

before graduating in Science and Education from university.

While working as a high school teacher, she built up 2,600 flying hours and became both a flying instructor and charter pilot. For the next 2yrs, she repeatedly applied to Ansett for commercial pilot training. During that time, while her applications were rejected, Ansett accepted 10 men into its pilot training program.

After finally receiving an interview in 1978 – and another rejection – she was encouraged by her new husband Peter Wardley (an air traffic controller) to take her case to the Victorian Equal Opportunity Board. It became Australia’s first sex discrimination case in employment.

Reg Ansett’s public opposition to female pilots sparked widespread demonstrations. Women transferred travel accounts to other airlines.

Ansett reportedly lost around 50% of its bookings, with sales never fully recovering.

The Victorian Equal Opportunity Board ruled Ansett acted illegally in denying Deb employment because of her gender. It awarded her $14,000 in damages and demanded Ansett immediately include her in the next training intake. After a failed appeal and further delays, he accepted her in November 1979, but continued to find fault and tried several times to dismiss her, despite inquiries clearing her. With union support Deb completed training, although Ansett still refused to allow her to undertake practical flying training with male colleagues.

After taking control of Ansett Airlines, Rupert Murdoch immediately intervened – Deb had taught his brother-in-law to fly! With completed flight training under her wing, she made history on the Alice Springs to Darwin service.

Deb said prejudices and obstacles still remain with only 8% of pilots being female.

After the birth of her son and progressing to jet planes – now a pilot with US Airline Atlas – she moved to the Netherlands in 1993, to join KLM as a Fokker 50 pilot. She became an instructor, flight safety manager and investigator, and later served until 2007 as a senior Airbus A330 captain.

After reaching European mandatory retirement age in 2008, Deb returned to Australia as an occasional Jetstar pilot and safety investigations

manager. In 2012 she became an Airbus A320 captain and instructor with Tigerair Australia, retraining on the Boeing 737-800 before transferring to Virgin Australia in 2020.

Her many awards and honours include a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), but she says one of her proudest recognitions is the Deborah Lawrie Flyover at Sydney Airport, which crosses Sir Reginald Ansett Dr. Deb will be a special guest at NoosaAlive! at Peppers Resort on 20 July, where she will discuss Fly Girl with playwrights Catherine Moore and Genevieve Hegney. although options vary: A non-binding nomination, which guides the trustee, but the trustee is not legally required to follow your wishes. This can become complicated if there is a dispute amongst your beneficiaries.

A binding nomination, which is legally binding on the trustee, and you must renew it every 3 years, unless you made a non-lapsing binding nomination.

A reversionary nomination, where your super goes to an eligible dependant – usually a spouse, including same-sex, or dependent child. Some funds automatically direct funds to such beneficiaries. Information and relevant forms can be found on your fund’s website.

Under Australian law, you generally cannot nominate a friend or distant relative directly as a super beneficiary. However, you can arrange for your super to be paid to your legal personal representative (the executor of your Will) who will use your Will to determine who receives your super.

When the balance of your super account is paid out to your nominated beneficiaries following your death, it’s called a super death benefit, and tax rules may apply. To avoid having your beneficiary pay more tax than necessary, it’s important to get advice from an estate planner such as a lawyer, financial adviser or accountant on the relevant tax rules, especially if your super is in a self-managed super fund (SMSF).

New laws came into effect on 1 July which impact how you “prove who you are”.

The Qld Law Society explained: “Anti-Money Laundering (AML) refers to a set of laws, regulations, and procedures designed to prevent criminals from disguising illegally obtained funds as legitimate income.”

The AML/CTF Act (Counter Terrorism Financing) was passed in 2006 (Tranche 1) aimed at sectors such as banks, casinos and bullion dealers.

Tranche 2 came into effect on 1 July and includes professions such lawyers, solicitors, accountants, conveyancers and real estate agents.

Buying or selling a house? Be prepared for more rigorous processes as Real Estate Institute of Qld (REIQ) agents are now required to strictly verify the identity of property buyers and sellers before providing service.

For legal work for trusts, estates and SMFS you will need to supply deed or probate documentation, trustee ID and beneficiary details.

These professionals are legally required to verify certain information about you as their client.

What sort of information? Well, the usual: name, address, DOB. You will need to provide identity documents with a photo such as passport or driver’s licence. As well, documents without your photo such as original birth certificate or citizenship papers, bank statements or pay slips.

You may also be asked for additional information such as why you want to get this service, if you or any of your family is a MP, court member or in a high-ranking government body, and if the service involves cryptocurrency. You will be asked to provide evidence of authority if you are acting on behalf of someone else. You may be asked about the source of your funds, and to provide documentation to verify this. You may be asked to provide documentation verifying where your purchase or deposit funds were obtained.

So, before you attend your appointment, check what ID and verification information you need to collect, and take it with you. The law is not designed to make your life more difficult, but to stop unscrupulous people from benefiting from criminal activities. Ruth Hickey

Let the Games Begin with a Roar!

The Brisbane Olympic Games may still be 6yrs away, and Los Angeles will host the next Olympics in 2028, but the Commonwealth Games are almost here, running in Glasgow from 23 July to 2 August.

Originally scheduled for Victoria, the Games were thrown into doubt when the state withdrew over rising costs. Glasgow, which staged a brilliant Games in 2014, stepped forward to host again. Yet here in Australia, little has been done to promote the athletes preparing to compete.

The athletes include 20 dedicated and inspirational Sunshine Coast athletes, 4 of them from our own Sunshine Coast Lightening netball squad. Surely they deserve more attention!

Olympic and Commonwealth Games legend Benny Pike said that local mayors from Caboolture to Gympie should work together to promote, applaud, assist and be proud of every representative – not just those from their own electorate.

The FIFA World Cup keeps Socceroos fans excited, and State of Origin receives huge publicity.

However the Commonwealth Games, featuring about 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories barely gets a mention.

The Games date back to 1930, when the first British Empire Games were held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. About 400 athletes from 11 28

countries competed in athletics, lawn bowls, boxing, rowing, swimming and wrestling, with women only allowed to take part in swimming events. The Games are held every 4 years, ideally midway between Olympic Games, and rotate among Commonwealth countries. Sydney hosted in 1938. After WWII the games resumed in Auckland, NZ in 1950.

Renamed the Commonwealth Games in 1978, they became affectionately known as the Friendly Games. Since 2002, athletes with disabilities have been full members of their national teams.

Birmingham 2022 became the first major global multi-sport event to award more medals to women than men, continuing the Games’ proud progress toward equality.

Glasgow 2026 will deliver the biggest Commonwealth Games swimming and paraswimming program yet, including the men’s 800m freestyle and women’s 1500m freestyle.

Other sports include 3x3 basketball, athletics, artistic gymnastics, judo, boxing, lawn bowls, weightlifting, netball and track cycling. Hopefully Sunshine Coasters will be glued to Channel 7 on their TVs, cheering on our local heroes.

In athletics, we have Olympians Peyton Craig in the 800m and Caleb Law in the 4x100m relay and 200m, along with paralympian Nathan Jason.

On the track, Buderim cyclist Kristina Cloman will defend her Commonwealth Games gold medal, while Katelyn Lynch from Kawana Bowls Club returns for her 4th Commonwealth Games, representing NZ. Sunshine Coast Lightning netball squad captain Liz Watson will lead the Australian team, joined

by Courtney Bruce, Cara Koenen and Donnell Wallam.

Swimming stars Sam Short and Kaylee McKeown will be joined by Alexandria Perkins, Isaac Cooper and Olympic para swimmers Lakeisha Patterson, Emily Beecroft and Jenna Jones, along with coaches Michael Sage and Harley Connolly.

We also happily adopt super swimmer Lani Pallister, because her mum, Janelle, who won gold in 1990, coaches at the Kawana Pool.

The Brisbane Games in 1982 inspired the formation of the Sunshine Coast Commonwealth Games Committee, created to promote and

fundraise for local athletes and to stage the first Welcome Home. The committee continued that support for our 5 LA Olympic athletes in 1984.

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games brought many Sunshine Coast locals into international glory. A record 38 athletes inspired even more locals through the 2020 Olympics, the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the incredible Paris Olympics, where 42 Sunshine Coast region Olympians and Paralympians were celebrated at the now-traditional Welcome Home.

So gather the family, bring out the pies, pizza and drinks, and turn on the Glasgow Games.

Noosa Pickleball success The Noosa Pickleball Club has delivered an impressive showing across 2 major tournaments, with players competing on the Sunshine Coast

and in Brisbane achieving outstanding results.

At the Pickleball Palace in Buderim, the Winter Tournament showcased the club’s depth of talent. In a tightly contested match, Monique Gorham and Joanne Flood secured gold in the Ladies 50+ (3.0 and under) division, edging out fellow Noosa players Annie Chan and Tracey Idle, who claimed silver. The club came close to a clean sweep in the category, with Desley Arnold and Becky Frankham narrowly missing a bronze medal finish.

Success continued in the Men’s Doubles 50+ (3.0), where Simon Duff and Phil Ellis battled strongly to bring home silver. In the Mixed Doubles 35+ (3.5+), Shaun Green and Christina Relouw added to the medal tally with another silver medal performance.

Day 2 of competition saw more podium finishes for Noosa players. Annie Chan and Simon Duff teamed up to claim bronze in the mixed doubles, overcoming clubmates Desley Arnold and Nick “Hoops” Hooper. Both pairs demonstrated strong performances throughout a highly competitive field, falling just short in their semifinal matches against the eventual gold and silver winners.

Meanwhile, at the Qld Pickleball Tournament in Redcliffe, Noosa Pickleball Club was once again well represented. Club veterans Ron Gatliff and Vince Lofaro delivered a standout performance, securing gold in the Over 70s division.

ON THIS DAY JULY 2026

Tour de France Six Australian riders will participate in the 2026 Tour de France from 4-26 July, including Kaden Groves who was born in Gympie.

The first Tour de France was held in 1903 and was sponsored by a French sports paper L’Auto which was facing declining sales. The paper thought that a tough endurance race around the country would capture people’s imaginations and boost sales of the paper. It was such a success that the Tour de France has been held annually ever since, apart from several years during WWI and WWII. In 1903 riders rode as individuals, without team support. The inaugural winner was a part-time chimney sweep, Maurice Garin, who rode a bike that weighed about 18kg and was single speed. A green armband signalled the overall winner. The yellow jersey was introduced in 1919 as a symbol of hope and renewal, after the devastation of WWI. Alcohol was a staple of early races. Maurice Garin enjoyed a glass of red and stopped along the route at bars to refuel. It must have helped, as he crossed the finish line almost 3 hours ahead of his rivals.

In the early days onlookers were locals, in contrast to recent years where fans travel from across the globe to follow the route. Safety was an issue from the start. In 1904, several hundred hometown fans tried to help Antoine Fauré by throwing nails and glass on the road and attacking his rivals, with one rider knocked unconscious. Race officials had to fire pistols in the air to defuse the situation.
