EUMUNDI CHAMBER CELEBRATES 90 YEARS The Eumundi Chamber of Commerce marked a major milestone at its annual AGM on 26 May celebrating 90 years since the first recorded formation of a business advocacy group in the town. The anniversary was a key focus of the 2026 AGM, recognising a long legacy of advocacy, collaboration and regional leadership.

Research through the National Library of Australia’s Trove archive traces the Chamber’s origins to 1936, when the Eumundi Business Men’s Assn became

a formal Chamber of Commerce. Contemporary reports in the Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser named J R Candy as President and T O Jones as Secretary-Treasurer, showing the town’s early commitment to organised local leadership.

From the beginning, the Chamber focused on practical outcomes. Early advocacy centred on infrastructure, including lobbying for development of Eumundi’s main street as part of the Bruce Highway, along with improvements to Cont. p3

the towns presentation and Cont. from p1 railway facilities. Within weeks of its formation, engineers were reportedly engaged to plan a bitumen surface for the main street.

Like many volunteer organisations, the Chamber had periods of inactivity. By 1970 media reports described it as being “in recess since 1966”. Local leaders then moved to re-establish a unified business voice, and on 26 November 1970 plans for revival were announced. Within a week 17 residents had reformed the group as the Eumundi and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The re-established Chamber resumed advocacy on issues including water supply, telecommunications, roads and emergency services. The modern Eumundi Chamber of Commerce Inc was formally incorporated in 1995, creating the governance framework that supports its operations today.

Outgoing president Cindy Suters said the anniversary was an important opportunity to recognise the generations of volunteers and business leaders who have shaped the town.

“The historical record shows that local business leaders have been advocating for Eumundi and the wider district for nearly a century,” she said.

“While the challenges may change over time, the Chamber’s role in supporting local enterprise and community connection remains as important today as it was in 1936.”

Cindy presented a summary of the past year’s achievements to members and special guests, including Mayor Rosanna Natoli and Cr David Law. Her decade of service was formally recognised

by Mayor Natoli and Cr Law as she stepped

down as president. Other outgoing executives, including Janene Pearson (Vice President) and Paul Deutcher (Treasurer and ECCO director) were also acknowledged. Lisa Jayne was named 2026 Member of the Year.

The 2026/2027 Executive Committee comprises Louise Formosa (President), Meaghan Reis (Secretary), Brett Grimley (Vice President) and Damian Ingham (Treasurer). The Chamber’s representatives on the Experience Eumundi board are David Perez and Brett Grimley.

Rio rocks Eumundi After a standout year on national and international stages, Eumundi musician Dellacoma Rio is returning home for a special live show. The past 12 months have seen him perform with Jon Stevens in Brisbane, play to 250,000 fans at the Poland Rock Festival, and release his album Searching for You in the Darkness, which reached #6 on the ARIA charts in November 2025. Celebrating one of his favourite albums, Dellacoma will perform at the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi on 19 June, delivering a full-band tribute to Bon Jovi’s iconic album Slippery When Wet. Cooroy Memorial Hall In August 2026, Cooroy Memorial Hall celebrates 100 years. A weekend of celebrations is planned.

August 21 has the Cooroy Genealogical Group's historical exhibition. Join the street party on 22 August with demonstrations, displays, music, entertainment and dancing. Then on 23 August join the Back to Cooroy community gathering.

Residents are invited to share photos and memories to help celebrate this special occasion.

The events mark not just a building, but generations of community life. From dances and fundraisers to weddings and local events, the hall has helped shape Cooroy into the town it is today.

The milestone also recognises the volunteers, committee members, Noosa Council, Bendigo Bank and sponsors who supported its 2018 rebuild, ensuring it remains a welcoming space for years to come.

Choral Festival The 20th Sunshine Coast Choral Festival will be held at Stella Maris Catholic Primary School Hall, Stella Way, Maroochydore from 1.30-4.30pm on 20 June. SCC Budget Sunshine Coast Council’s (SCC’s) 2026-27 Budget sets out a program of infrastructure upgrades, road improvements, community facilities and everyday services, while responding to rising costs across the region. Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the budget was shaped by feedback from residents, community groups and the Sunshine Coast’s first Citizens’ Panel, with a focus on financial responsibility and ensuring every dollar delivers value.

Adopted at a special meeting on 1 June, the budget includes investment in public spaces, transport, environmental protection, business centre revitalisation and community partnerships. It also highlights local projects in the hinterland, including upgrades to North Arm Rd, parking improvements near North Arm School, a streetscape upgrade in Kenilworth and renewed amenities at Eumundi Aquatic Centre.

For most owner-occupier ratepayers, rates will rise by $4.26 a week, or $221.68 a year, following a State Government land revaluation that lifted property values across the Sunshine Coast by an average of 24%. Mayor Natoli said council had worked hard to manage the impact, while acknowledging the pressure many households are already facing.

She said the budget balanced immediate service needs with long-term planning for the region’s future. To ease cost-of-living pressures, council has increased pensioner concessions and will offer 6-month, interest-free payment plans for residents who need support, once rates notices are issued in July. Rail upgrade Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien has welcomed the release of detailed designs for Stage 1 of the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade.

“The Beerburrum to Nambour corridor is one of the most critical transport links in Southeast Qld and upgrading it is essential if we are serious about reducing congestion, improving reliability and preparing for future growth,” said Mr O’Brien.

The project includes duplication of the rail line from Beerburrum to Beerwah, new rail bridges, removal of level crossings, expanded park ‘n’ ride facilities in Nambour, and major road upgrades to improve safety and efficiency along the corridor.

Don’t bin your batteries Throwing batteries in your household bin might seem harmless, but it can have dangerous consequences.

When batteries end up in general waste or recycling, they can be compacted or punctured during collection and processing. This damage can trigger fires in garbage trucks or at waste facilities – posing serious safety risks to workers, damaging infrastructure, and disrupting essential waste and recycling services.

Batteries contain materials that can ignite under pressure or when exposed to heat. Even small household batteries can cause significant incidents if handled incorrectly. Preventing these risks starts with a simple habit: keeping batteries out of your bins.

To make safe disposal even easier, Noosa Council is introducing battery-safe bins at: Noosa Council Administration Centre, Cooroy Library, Noosaville Library, Noosa Leisure Centre, Noosa Aquatic Centre and Noosaville Depot.

These bins are designed for embedded batteries – the kind found in everyday items such as vapes, toys, smartwatches, headphones and electric toothbrushes.

For larger embedded batteries, such as those in e-bikes and e-scooters, residents can use the Resource Recovery Centre on Eumundi-Noosa Road or the transfer stations at Cooroy and Pomona.

Instead of disposing of batteries in your regular waste, take them to a designated collection point where they can be handled safely and recycled appropriately. New physiotherapy clinic in Cooroy Residents of Cooroy and surrounding communities now have greater access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation services with the opening of Cooroy Physio & Wellness Clinic at 2/42 Maple St, Cooroy.

Owner and Practice Manager Lisa Talbot said the clinic was established in response to growing demand for local allied health services.

Today, the lookout is both a memorial site and a practical rest stop, with picnic facilities and sweeping views across the hinterland towards the coast.

The Noosa Trail Network The Noosa Trail Network is one of the best ways to experience the region’s hinterland, combining fresh air, rural scenery and relaxed country charm.

Spread across a series of shared trails linking towns such as Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona and Cooroy, the network offers something for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders alike.

Along the way, you can pass through open farmland, eucalypt forest, rainforest pockets and quiet country roads, with ever-changing views that make each section feel different. One of the highlights is the range of lookouts scattered across the network, including elevated points that open up to sweeping views over the surrounding hills and valleys.

James McKane Lookout – also known as the Tablelands Lookout – is an important stopping

Noosa Council records show that James McKane served as a Div 1 Councillor from 1933 to 1943 and owned a dairy farm on Tablelands Rd. A report in the Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser on 31 May 1935, covering Noosa Council’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, recorded McKane’s strong belief in the district’s future. He recalled arriving in the region a decade earlier and feeling as though he had discovered an El Dorado, impressed by its natural beauty and resources. He also spoke of Noosa and Tewantin as future holiday destinations, predicting that visitors would one day travel there in their thousands. That vision proved remarkably accurate, and James McKane Lookout now stands as both a tribute to his contribution and one of the most recognised viewpoints in the hinterland trail system.

Around Lake Macdonald, a walk on the trail can easily be paired with a visit to the Noosa Botanic Gardens, while Cooroy and Pomona make great post-walk stops for food and local produce.

Great Noosa Trail Walk The Great Noosa Trail Walk (GNTW) traverses the country towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona via a series of dedicated walking trails through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular lookouts of the hinterland through

to the ocean. Held over the King’s Birthday longweekend, the walk starts early on 3 October and finishes on 5 October.

A good level of walking fitness is required, but this is not a race – complete each day’s walk at your own pace. The goal is to experience this part of the world and enjoy the landscape, local cafés and antique shops encountered enroute.

Volunteer trail guides provide assistance and information about the history and landscape.

Camping is provided at Kin Kin and Cooran or book accommodation at local guest houses. Your camping gear is transferred to the next location each day by volunteers from the Rotary Club of Eumundi.

On 22 May I attended Eumundi State School (ESS) and participated in Under 8’s Day. It was a great opportunity for police to engage positively with younger primary school students. The kids all had the chance to be “arrested” and placed in the back of the paddy wagon. The Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade also attended which was a real hit with the students, particularly with the fire hose demonstration. The highlight of my day – and of many of the students – was the arrest of Mr Jennings and seeing him placed in the paddy wagon.

As the first half of the school year comes to a close, I would like to acknowledge the road safety awareness being shown in and around our schools. Eumundi Police have received a low number of complaints regarding parking and other safety issues around both ESS and North Arm State School.

On the topic of road safety, a community meeting was held on 3 June at North Arm. Although I was unable to attend, I have been advised that speeding on Bunya Rd and safety concerns at the intersection of Bunya Rd and North ArmYandina Creek Rd were again discussed. Eumundi Police continue to conduct speed enforcement in the area, and I am still in discussions with the Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol Unit to have a speed camera site approved for Bunya Rd, North Arm. There were no major incidents to report in May. Eumundi Police attended 159 calls for service during the month, which was slightly above

the usual number. In addition to our regular workload, Eumundi Police were allocated extra funding in May to increase traffic enforcement duties across the division. This additional funding has been a real bonus, allowing us to dedicate specific time to road safety.

Many people would likely have noticed the increased patrols and perhaps having been breath-tested more often than usual. In recent times, it has been pleasing to see the low number of high-range drink drivers detected. However, the number of low-range drink drivers (0.050.099%) remains steady, if not slightly higher, with 10 people detected and charged in May. As a general guide published by the government, males can have 2 standard drinks in the first hour and then 1 standard drink for each hour after that, while females can have 1 standard drink in the first hour and then 1 standard drink for each hour after that. It is important to understand what a standard drink is. All I can ask is that, if in doubt, do not risk it – make the decision not to drive.

From landfill to habitat You may have noticed some activity at the old Eumundi landfill site over the last year or so.

Council are in the process of capping this disused landfill and revegetating the area. There are pretty limited uses for old landfill sites. Revegetation captures carbon, provides additional habitat and improves biodiversity outcomes in the VerrierdaleEumundi area.

COUNCILLOR DIV 10 - CR DAVID LAW Safer roads for Eumundi I am pleased to share the first stage of the North Arm Rd upgrade is progressing, along the south side of Wegner’s Rd leading right up to the Wegner’s Rd junction.

It will be a huge improvement for everyone who uses this road, and I know residents will be delighted. Improvements include upgrading the gravel road to a sealed standard and floodway upgrades along approximately 1km of road. It’s expected to be completed by end of October 2026, weather permitting. National Reconciliation Week It was wonderful to see so many people across the Sunshine Coast come together from 27 May to 3 June to support First Nations-led events and businesses as part of National Reconciliation Week. I attended a breakfast event at the end of May. It made me proud to be part of such a respectful and connected community. This year’s theme, All In, reminded us that reconciliation is a shared journey. Looking ahead, planning is already underway for NAIDOC Week in July, with this year’s national theme 50 Years of Deadly.

The Grand Parade was outstanding with heritage floats, a horse-drawn Cinderella coach and services floats from Rural Fire, Police and SES. Music from pipe bands, drumming groups and the jingly bells of the Morris Dancers were followed by the sound bursts from the hot-rods, acrobatics and Indigenous groups.

Goomeri Pumpkin Festival The last weekend in May was the date for the 30th Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, and what a success it was! Thousands of people enjoyed the autumn sunshine and the host of activities around the theme of pumpkins.

Goomeri’s main streets were alive with craft and produce stalls. Dressing in orange and green added to the festive spirit, while many visitors had a new Akubra or ‘flannie’ shirt on their shopping list. The Pumpkin Olympics included shot put and running races, and the biggest pumpkin weighed in at an impressive 105.5kg.

Friday night was Rodeo night, with all the thrills of bareback and saddle bronco riders, the gyrations of the bull riders and youngsters on energetic calves. Saturday night was Twilight Food Night with dozens of stalls serving Thai and Greek, as well as the usual burgers and spiral potatoes – plus pumpkin soup to warm up your insides before the fireworks. EUMUNDI ROTARY CLUB Honouring our Honorary Members On 4 June the Rotary Club of Eumundi celebrated the outstanding service of 4 valued Honorary Members, recognising their significant contributions to Rotary and the wider community.

Bob Ward was acknowledged for more than 20 years of service, including leadership roles at Cooroy and Eumundi, and for his longstanding support of members. John Turnbull was recognised for more than 26 years in Rotary,

including service as president, treasurer and foundation member of Eumundi Rotary. Joyce Turnbull was honoured for 12 years of dedicated service, notably as president, membership chair and the driving force behind Eumundi Voice. Why worry about weeds? In Australia, invasive weeds were cited as the number 1 leading cause of biodiversity loss and species extinction. It’s a billion-dollar problem. The CSIRO estimated the financial cost of managing Australia’s 3,000 invasive weed species to be around $25B – and add to that the immense cost of managing the environmental damage caused by these pest plants.

Join the Weed Army SCC’s invasive weeds project, funded by the Environment Levy, ensures levy contributions are reinvested into protecting the region’s environment and supporting resilient landscapes for the future.

This 5-year project conducted a variety of weed management control options and research trials using innovative technologies. The project explored drone mapping and artificial intelligence to detect invasive weeds at scale, environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling to identify weeds spreading through catchments and waterways, and trials of alternative control methods to reduce long term reliance on herbicides.

Council will run 2 more Weed Army events and workshops with practical, hands-on demonstrations that show participants how to work with the land, not against it, restore habitat, protect wildlife and save themselves time and money in the long term.

Aussie Aerials go global A group of young Australian aerial athletes are preparing to make history as they become the first-ever Team Australia to compete at the International Aerial Arts World Championships in Aruba this August.

Selected on an invitation-only basis, the team features athletes from across Australia, including several from the Sunshine Coast and wider Qld region.

For many of these young athletes, this opportunity represents years of hard work, dedication and training finally paying off. Alongside school, jobs and everyday life, they have spent countless hours preparing routines, building strength and flexibility, fundraising, and working towards their dream of representing their country.

Raya Cargill, 12, of Noosa, said, “I feel really proud to represent Australia in aerials because it shows all the hard work has been worth it. I also feel very honoured to be selected, especially with so many amazing aerialists in Australia. I hope our team can make Australia proud and show the rest of the world what Aussie kids can do.”

The Australian Aerial Arts Organisation (AUAAO), working alongside the International Aerial Arts Organisation (IAAO), is focused on helping create stronger structure and pathways for aerial athletes within Australia, particularly for those wanting opportunities to compete internationally. The wider long-term vision is to continue growing recognition for aerial arts as a legitimate

Tip 1 20/20/20 Give the muscles around the eye a chance to relax from the strain of maintaining focus. Every 20 minutes take a break for 20 seconds and look at something 7m away. The exact distance is not critical – just look at something such as a tree, building, or distant object outside a window.

There are muscles around the eye which contract when we are looking at something close by, so when we look at something in the distance they can relax and reset.

Tip 2 Blink Under natural conditions, humans blink 15-20 times per minute. During screen use, this can drop to 6-8 blinks which leads to faster evaporation of tears, triggering a dry, gritty sensation in the eyes.

Take a break and blink rapidly so the muscles around your eye squeeze tear glands to replenish the tear film that coats your eyes. As well, you can use preservative-free eye drops to avoid possible allergic reactions and side effects.

Tip 3 Take a break Device use tends to make us inactive, and adopt poor posture such as hunching over, or your head leaning forward. Be conscious of your posture and check it frequently. Stretch your arms, move the screen to another focal distance to reduce neck, shoulder and back pain. Correct any improper screen positioning, such as screens being too high, low, or far from the eyes.

Tip 4 Screen time If you find an hour has gone by while you are staring at a screen, then set up a timer to help you avoid extended screen time. Use your phone alarm to alert you every 20 minutes. Use the advertising breaks to get up and walk around, make a cuppa or turn and chat to your couch partners.

Tip 5 Screen settings Small font sizes and poor contrast strain your focusing muscles especially with repeated daily exposure. Adjust the brightness as you respond to poor lighting conditions, including glare from overhead lights or reflections on screens. Keep screens at eye level and at a comfortable distance.

Bright screens in a dark room are not a good idea, so keep another light on as well.

Tip 6 Humidifier Working and living with air conditioning is certainly more comfortable but is typically a dry environment. One counter measure is to use a humidifier.

Digital eye strain symptoms usually improve after resting the eyes or reducing screen time, but persistent discomfort should be evaluated by an eye care professional to rule out other conditions.

Environment and Liveability Portfolio Cr Tim Burns said the program gives young people valuable insight into the variety of careers available at council while helping them connect their interests with real job opportunities.

“This program is a fantastic way for young people to discover the diverse career opportunities available at council and learn about how local governments operate,” Cr Burns said.

He said the program was about more than shortterm experience, highlighting the long-term and rewarding career opportunities available on the Sunshine Coast.

One example is Sonia Mars, who, after moving to Australia, joined council through a 2-week placement. That opportunity led to casual work, then a contract, and ultimately longer-term employment.

Treaty of Nara The recent visit to Australia by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi marked 50 yrs since the signing on 16 June 1976 of the Treaty of Nara

by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki. Known more fully as The Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, it was the first comprehensive bilateral treaty signed by either country. Australia wanted to refashion a politically ambivalent relationship with Japan and promote a commercial partnership. Japan saw the treaty as a step towards modern economic development.

The Treaty formally recognised friendship, shared interests and interdependence as core principles, and emphasised the value of cooperation. Prior to the Treaty of Nara, Australia’s agreements with Japan had been subject-specific, such as the Civil Aviation Agreement of 1956 and the Double Taxation Agreement of 1970. Nara went further by agreeing that the parties should work together on matters of mutual interest that ranged from economic and political to sport and science.

The treaty was criticised for being short on legally enforceable provisions and therefore of little impact but over time, trade and investment flows intensified as did exchanges of people between the 2 countries. It laid the basis for work by both governments that continues to this day to strengthen ties.
