Eumundi Rotary is continuing its strong commitment to local young people, backing opportunities that build skills, confidence and leadership both on and off the field. In a small community, investing in youth is an investment in the future.

Recently the club sponsored Zarli Bourke, an 11yo from Doonan, who has earned selection in the Sunshine Coast regional team and will travel to Cairns this year to compete in a series of AFL trial matches.

Originally from Melbourne, Zarli moved to the Sunshine Coast with her family 9 years ago and has embraced the region’s active lifestyle.

From an early age she showed natural athletic ability and a strong competitive spirit, qualities shaped in part by growing up with 2 older brothers and supported every step of the way by her family.

Over the years, Zarli has taken part in a wide range of sports, with soccer emerging as her greatest passion. She currently plays for the Noosa Lions Under-12 Academy team and spends countless hours developing her game, training most evenings, competing on weekends and even refereeing junior matches. has taken up AFL and was Cont. from p1 quickly recognised as a natural talent.

Her hard work has already brought representative honours in both AFL and soccer. After progressing through Sunshine Coast School Sport district trials, Zarli was selected for Sunshine Coast regional teams in both codes. She will compete in the Qld School Sport AFL State Championships in Cairns in June and will again represent the region in August at the Football State Championships, where she will be aiming for possible Qld selection.

Away from sport, Zarli is emerging as a leader within her school community. Earlier this year she was selected as school captain, in recognition of her determination, kindness, confidence and strong character. Eumundi Rotary’s support will help her continue pursuing those opportunities, and club members will be watching her progress with interest in the years ahead.

Eumundi Rotary has also committed to Karate Community’s Sponsorship Program, sponsoring 1 student for 3 years as a Gold Sponsor, extending its investment in youth development beyond the sporting field.

Over the past decade, Karate Community has offered local families more than martial arts training. Head coach and Sensei Peter Zarb said karate had become “a pathway to greater confidence, resilience, social connection and a sense of belonging for many young people”.

To mark 10 years of teaching in Eumundi, a fullyear scholarship was offered to 1 student, drawing applications from about 20% of members and highlighting strong local need.

“The message was clear: access matters,” said

Peter. He emphasised that for young people facing financial or personal challenges, programs like karate can provide routine, guidance and a safe, supportive environment.

Whether it is helping a promising young athlete chase representative honours or supporting broader access to programs that build confidence and resilience, Eumundi Rotary’s latest investments underline the important role local groups can play in shaping brighter futures for young people.

Chocolate Starfish brings their All Fired Up tour to The Events Centre in Caloundra on 3 July. Known for paying homage to great and touring classic albums, this tour is all about female rock anthems.

Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) is holding a Restore and Reconnect: Koala Habitat Community Planting at 133 Platz Rd, Kenilworth on 30 May starting at 9.30am. Situated at the Tuan Environment Reserve, this activity is part of SCC’s ongoing effort to restore koala habitat, strengthen wildlife corridors and bring together people with a shared interest.

The aim is to plant 1,500 native trees, shrubs and ground covers. Feeling peckish? A sausage sizzle will be onsite, but bring your own water and snacks, sun-safe clothing and enclosed shoes. All tools, plants, gloves and guidance are provided.

Buckley’s Chance Enjoy a Sunday afternoon with Buckley’s Chance who have become something of a Pomona institution, taking the best ‘unknown’ folk and country songs from around the world and making them their own.

Led by Karen Law, a multi-award-winning folk songwriter and 2025 AFMA Performer of the Year finalist, the band delivers an uplifting and compelling full-band show.

Echoes of Pink Floyd Buderim Craft Cottage Greg Wuth was a long-standing member of the Buderim Craft Cottage before his untimely death in 2024. His passing has been a huge loss, for his family, Buderim Craft Cottage friends, and the many community groups in which he participated.

Greg left behind many unfinished artworks. In tribute to him, fellow artists have completed these pieces, which will be offered for sale at a special exhibition from 12-14 June, 10am-2pm daily at 5 Main St, Buderim. Proceeds from the sale of Greg’s artwork will be distributed among the community groups that were an important part of his life.

The Calligraphy & Papercraft Group’s exhibition on 19-21 June from 9am-4pm daily features unique handcrafted papers and modern interpretations of the ancient art of calligraphy.

Silent film: Pourquoi S’en Faire The Majestic Theatre at 3 Factory St, Pomona is renowned for its silent film screenings and will present the very special comedy Pourquoi S’en Faire (Why Worry?) with Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis on 30 May. Noosa Libraries is launching a series called Page to Screen that explores books and their film adaptations. The Australian film Walkabout opens the series on 30 May from 7-9pm at The Majestic Theatre Pomona.

Walkabout follows 2 city children lost in the Australian outback who encounter a young Aboriginal boy on his traditional walkabout and embark on a journey of survival. Learning Day on Country Educators will be interested in the immersive Professional Learning Day on Country, organised

Hoofbeats Sanctuary faces financial crisis Australia’s charitable sector is facing an unprecedented crisis. Across the country, community organisations are closing as donations decline and demand for services rises.

The recent pause in operations of local palliative care hospice Katie Rose Cottage, is just one example of the quiet tragedies unfolding in our region.

For over 7 years Hoofbeats Sanctuary has stood out for its remarkable impact. Since its inception the sanctuary has supported over 200 women and girls. An independent evaluation by the University of the Sunshine Coast found that the sanctuary’s programs produced improvements in mental health more than 10 times greater than federally funded services. Each of the 22 mental health indicators measured improved, with none missing the threshold for clinical significance.

“At Hoofbeats we’ve witnessed remarkable transformations,” said CEO Barb Blashki. “One 13yo girl, once monitored around-the-clock after a suicide attempt, returned to simply being a kid after 12 weeks with us. A woman who had been suicidal for 3 years left our program with independence, friends and a renewed sense of purpose. And another young woman, who came to Hoofbeats as her ‘last resort’ went on to study equine-assisted therapy and volunteer at the sanctuary.”

Despite its proven impact, Hoofbeats Sanctuary receives no government funding and depends entirely on donations and one-off grants. It is now facing a serious financial crisis, with new client enrolments paused and closure a real daily threat. To remain open the sanctuary needs to raise $50,000 within the next 3 months.

sanctuary’s story, connecting with potential supporters, following on social media, or sending a kind word. Hoofbeats Sanctuary has been a lifeline for women and girls and now it is calling on the community to help ensure its survival.

Liveability in Noosa Noosa Council has published the 2026 Liveability Survey with results for individual locations and an overall shire score. Liveability is defined as “what a place is like to live in”. The survey assists council to understand “the relationship between people and their places” which is “the key to understanding local liveability, and how it can be preserved and enhanced”.

The 2021 liveability Index score for Noosa Shire was 70 out of 100 – above the national average of 68. In 2026 Noosa Shire score was 69 out of 100, and the national average was 64. The Qld average score was 63. The Australian Liveability Census undertaken by Place Score in 2025 indicates an overall national and statewide trend of a drop in liveability across the majority of local government areas.

Neighbourhood liveability snapshots are available for areas in the shire. Each snapshot reports on the values held by participants and what constitutes an “ideal neighbourhood”. Aspects include elements of natural environment, sense of neighbourhood safety, condition of public spaces, businesses to provide for daily needs and access to neighbourhood amenities. Mayor visits Repair Café At a recent visit to Eumundi’s Repair Café, SCC Mayor Rosanna Natoli congratulated organisers explaining the initiative supports council’s broader waste management goals, including zero waste to landfill and net-zero emissions by 2041. The café’s philosophy is to extend the life of household goods through the skills of local residents using tools and sewing machines. It is part of a global movement of more than 3,500 repair cafés working to keep materials out of landfill. The café operates every second Thursday of the month at the Eumundi QCWA Hall from 10.30am-2.30pm.

The mayor also met with members of the Eumundi Residents Association (ERA) and other residents to discuss key community priorities.

These included the potential development of a Eumundi Neighbourhood Centre, a call for resident-only parking, the success of the 2025 Eumundi Writers Festival – which was reviewed in The Weekend Australian – and the next festival to be held from 4-6 September.

Mayor Natoli explained that earlier requests for resident-only parking schemes in other business districts on the Sunshine Coast had been rejected by the SCC’s Transport and Infrastructure Department making it impossible for such a scheme on Memorial Dr. However, she particularly supported ERA’s work with residents on a 10-year plan for the town focused on heritage protection, community development and the local economy.

The discussion highlighted the need for more 12

community meeting spaces. One community member raised concerns about the derelict topof-town site. The meeting also noted a proposal by the Qld Redistribution Commission to move Eumundi into a new Nambour electorate, marking a significant political shift after 3 decades within the Ninderry and Noosa electorates. ERA has lodged a submission opposing the change.

First Officer Geoff Garley from the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade followed with a presentation about the vital role volunteers play, and the opportunities available for future volunteers – not only on the frontline but also in administration, equipment maintenance and public education.

He said all new volunteers would be welcome, fully trained and well supported in their activities.

Charity calls for volunteers PTSD Dogs Australia is appealing for more volunteers as new figures reveal mounting pressure on community organisations across Qld. Data released by Volunteering Qld shows a 17% shortfall in volunteer capacity across more than 470 locations, with 1 in 6 roles currently vacant.

The Sunshine Coast-based charity, which rescues and trains dogs to support veterans, Australian Defence Force personnel and first responders living with post-traumatic stress disorder, says volunteers are critical to expanding its services.

The organisation is seeking help in marketing, communications, partnerships, philanthropy and events as it works to meet growing demand.

The call comes during National Volunteer Week 2026, as many organisations report struggling to maintain services without additional support.

A scoop of Italy in Eumundi In the heart of Eumundi, Lorenzo’s Gem Gelato Coffee Bar is bringing a taste of Italy to the Sunshine Coast, serving authentic Italian gelato and specialty coffee inspired by the owners’ heritage, travels and shared dream of building a family business.

For owners Lorenzo and Gem, authenticity is central to the concept. Apart from fresh ingredients such as milk, nearly everything is sourced from Italy, including the gelato machine and traditional Pozzetti – the traditional Italian method of storing gelato inside deep, hidden stainless steel canisters rather than mounding it high in an open glass display. “We’ve worked hard to create an experience that feels genuinely Italian,” said Lorenzo.

Alongside gelato and coffee, the shop offers pastries and dairy-free options, with plans to expand into traditional sandwiches, smoothies, healthy breakfasts and lunch bowls. For now, the focus remains on perfecting the gelato flavours and coffee experience, using organic or sprayfree fruit whenever possible.

owners’ children often helping in the shop.

“Creating something together as a family has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey for us,” they said.

The story behind Lorenzo’s Gem began with 2 people from different parts of the world. Gemma was born in Dublin and moved to Australia as a child, while Lorenzo is from Parma and has lived in Australia for the past decade. The pair met in 2025, fell in love, and later travelled to Italy together – a trip that would shape the future of their business.

Before that trip, there were plans to open a small café. But everything changed after discovering Spagnola, a traditional Italian Amarena cherry gelato made on a rich egg-based base with chocolate shards. “I completely fell in love with it, and that experience inspired us to create a business together centred around authentic Italian coffee and gelato,” said Lorenzo.

Gem says the business is the only gelato shop on the Sunshine Coast offering traditional egg-based gelato. The slower, more delicate method creates a creamier, richer texture, reduces sugar and brings out the natural flavours of the ingredients.

There are about 14 flavours on offer, with Lorenzo constantly experimenting. One of the newest is a tiramisu-inspired gelato made with raw mascarpone, which has quickly become a customer favourite.

Before opening the business, Gem worked for Qld Health for 15 years. Lorenzo has worked in disability services and continues in that field because of his commitment to supporting people with disabilities.

Choosing Eumundi as home felt natural. The family had loved the town for years and lived only minutes away. Since opening, they have been touched by the support of locals. “Everyone has been so welcoming and encouraging, and the community spirit here has truly blown us away,” they said.

Farmer finds a wife Viewers are still reeling after the outrageous behaviour of most female contestants on the recent Married at First Sight series, which featured bullying, vile language, explicit comments, outrageous lies, revealing wardrobes and more surgical enhancements than gravity can contain.

The men were little better with their misogynistic narcissism and lack of respect, resulting in just 1 couple showing decency, respect for others and the possibility that lasting true love at first sight is possible.

Now viewers await the more wholesome Farmer Wants a Wife which begins 8pm on Monday 8 June on Channel 7, with 6 handsome farmers looking for romance and hopefully, a lifelong partner.

Among them is 28yo cattle and mushroom farmer Alex from Kin Kin who host Natalie Gruzlewski said, sounded like “my dream man.”

Since 2007, Farmer Wants a Wife has resulted in 22 couples still together with 11 marriages, 27 children, several engagements and current pregnancies. Hundreds of hopeful ladies submit entry forms, photos, undergo interviews, screen tests and suitability checks. They nominate just 1 farmer, who then selects his 6 from a photo shortlist. The ladies do almost anything to stay until the end, but many prove unsuited to farm life, arriving with fake tans, perfect hair and makeup, impossible eye lashes and artificial nails, while struggling through sheep dips in high heels and floaty gowns to improve their influencer scores.

This year with just 6 farmers, viewers will have more time to get to know them, but will they all stay? Will there be an intruder like Tasmanian Jack, who last season found his future wife in Sarah from Cairns?

Viewers will be keen to find out if Alex found someone “artistic, fun and cheeky who has a lust for life” to share his love for traveling, music, dancing, cooking and sport?

Joining Alex are 3 South Australian hopefuls.

Jarrad (41yo), an almond farmer who loves the outdoors, fitness, being adventurous and seeks a wife “who doesn’t take life too seriously.” He has 2 sons, loves camping, fishing and water sports.

Rodeo cowboy and sheep farmer Dylan (24yo) seeks “a woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to take the bull by the horns.” Being able to ride a horse would be useful.

Apple farmer Zac (24yo), who loves people, cooking, sports, honest conversations and seeks a wife with her own goals while supporting his.

Farmer Jason (37yo) from Coolabunia, Qld is “a big teddy bear” with 2 children who wants a bubbly, outgoing partner who must like early starts on his dairy farm.

West Australian cattle farmer John (37yo) loves performance cars and off-road bikes. His partner should be confident, outgoing and adventurous with a good sense of humour.

A friend of mine from Channel 7 hinted television’s most successful dating show certainly has romance this season, and even a proposal.

Noosa Country Show seeks rural ambassadors The Noosa Show Society is calling for passionate individuals to step forward as Rural Ambassadors for the 2026 season.

The program is open to both male and female entrants who are eager to develop their skills and become leaders within their community.

Participants will have the chance to represent and promote agriculture, build confidence and connect with like-minded peers across the industry. The program also offers the possibility to advance to State and National levels, providing a platform for broader influence and recognition.

The Rural Ambassador program has 2 categories: Junior Ambassadors 16-20yo and Senior 20-30yo.

Ambassadors in both categories are expected to represent and promote agricultural interests, develop their leadership skills and confidence, network with peers across the industry, and inspire as well as lead within their local community.

Lions Eye Health Program The Cooroy Pomona Lions Club is rolling out free children’s vision screenings across Noosa and the Noosa Hinterland through the Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP), with local volunteers visiting schools, kindergartens and community events to identify undetected eye problems before they affect learning and development.

According to the Lions Eye Health Program, 1 in 5 children has an undetected vision condition.

The screenings go beyond a basic eyesight check, assessing visual acuity, astigmatism, eye alignment, depth perception, colour vision and other issues that may require referral to an optometrist or ophthalmologist. LEHP says its program is among the most comprehensive children’s vision screening services operating in Australia as up to 80% of learning is processed through the eyes.

Local screenings have already been delivered at Cooroy State School, Pomona & District Kindergarten, Monkland State School, Widgee State School and the Gympie Kids Day Out community event.

Club president and qualified LEHP facilitator Nick Cooke said local results were regularly reflecting the national 1 in 5 rate and sometimes exceeding it. “Many children simply don’t realise they have a vision issue because they assume everybody sees the world the same way they do,” said Nick.

The club is encouraging schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, sporting clubs and community organisations to book free screening sessions, while also seeking more volunteers to train as vision screeners. Since the national program began in 2018, LEHP has carried out more than 50,000 screenings and referred more than 10,782 children for further assessment, highlighting the value of early detection. Alex Rotary backs gym for young people The Rotary Club of Alexandra Headland is calling on the Sunshine Coast community to support a new initiative aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable young people living at The Old Church in Nambour.

Through a special dollar-for-dollar matching campaign, Alex Rotary aims to raise funds to create a gym and wellness space for residents of The Old Church youth accommodation facility, operated by Integrated Family and Youth Service (IFYS).

The Old Church provides supported accommodation for 21 young people who are unable to live safely at home due to a range of personal and family circumstances. Managed 24 hours a day by the team at IFYS, the service offers young people a stable and nurturing environment as they work toward independence, education, employment and long-term wellbeing.

Alex Rotary President Wendy Gilson said, “This is about giving young people the opportunity to build confidence, resilience and healthy routines in a safe environment. The gym will become more than just a fitness space; it will be a place where young people can focus on their physical and mental wellbeing and continue building positive futures.”

Manager of The Old Church Lauren Charman said, “Our young people have often experienced significant challenges before coming into our care. Having access to a dedicated gym and wellness space will provide not only physical benefits, but also help build self-esteem, routine, connection and a sense of achievement. The quiet kind of unkindness Not all harm leaves a mark.

Some of the most damaging behaviour in our community doesn't shout or shove. It whispers.

It excludes. It rolls its eyes. We've been taught to call it drama, office politics or just kids being kids.

But it has a name – relational aggression – and it's one of the most common ways people hurt each other.

You've seen it. The child left off every party list on purpose. The teenager frozen out of the group chat. The volunteer at the club who's quietly undermined until they stop showing up.

The colleague whose ideas are dismissed with a look. The team member whose ideas are stolen without credit. The friend whose reputation takes small, deliberate hits – a comment here, a snide smirk there.

It's hard to spot because each moment seems minor. The harm lives in the pattern, not the single act, and the person carrying it often starts to wonder if they are imagining it.

They're not. Being shut out genuinely hurts – research shows the brain processes social rejection much like physical pain. That's why this quiet harm leaves such lasting bruises.

How to stop relational aggression Relational aggression tends to escalate with an audience. It needs people to laugh at the joke, pass on the rumour, or stay silent to avoid becoming the next target. Which means the power to stop it sits with each of us.

It’s simpler than you'd think. Notice it. Don't feed it – decline to laugh, refuse to pass the story on.

Include the person being left out, and when you can, call it out, kindly and confidently.

That's not being nice. Niceness is passive. This is kindness – the courageous kind. It's active and it’s strong. It's how a community decides what it will and won't tolerate, one individual at a time.

Eumundi Rotary is excited to announce a unique opportunity for Yr11 students in the Eumundi and district network: 2 partially sponsored places at the prestigious National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Yr12 Program, held at Uni of Qld in St Lucia Brisbane from 13-21 January 2027.

The NYSF Yr12 Program is designed to broaden students’ horizons in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Participants will stay on campus, immersing themselves in a vibrant environment of scientific discovery and innovation. The program offers hands-on tours of cutting-edge science and technology facilities, opportunities to engage with leading industry partners and researchers and insights into university and STEM career pathways. Students will also connect with likeminded peers from across Australia, participate in social and team-building activities and join a supportive alumni network.

A standout feature of the NYSF is its “youth for youth” approach, with alumni returning each year to help deliver the program through the Student Staff Leadership Program. Graduates of the NYSF gain access to ongoing opportunities, including invitations to events and priority entry to the National Youth STEM Summit for those aged 18–25.

Eumundi Rotary will cover half the total program fee of $3,250 for all the selected students.

Asthma first aid Asthma First Aid is something everyone should know – because one day it could save a life.

However, would you know what to do in an asthma emergency?

Australia has one of the highest asthma rates in the world, with around 1 in 9 Australians living with the condition. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the airways, causing them to

tighten, swell and produce excess mucus. This can lead to wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath.

Asthma triggers vary from person to person and can include pollen, smoke, pollution, storms, illness, exercise and stress. Each year, around 32,000 Australians are admitted to hospital with asthma, yet experts believe many of these cases could be prevented with better community awareness and proper inhaler use.

In an asthma emergency staying calm is key.

Sit the person upright and reassure them. Use a Ventolin inhaler or an alternatively branded salbutamol puffer – usually blue-grey in colour – ideally with a spacer.

Follow the “4 x 4 x 4” method: Give 4 separate puffs into the spacer Take 4 breaths after each puff Wait 4 minutes.

If symptoms don’t improve, repeat the process.

If there’s still no improvement after 2 rounds, call 000 immediately.

Knowing these simple steps could make all the difference while waiting for emergency help to arrive.

ENTERTAINMENT Patriotism, passion, performances, protests – it’s Eurovision!

Once again Eurovision provided excitement, patriotic fervour, protests, boycotts, questionable voting, tension, controversial choices, moments of hysteria, surprises and shocks – but above all glamour, music, madness and touching gestures of international humanity, proving that after 70 years we can still be “united in song.”

Australia’s Delta Goodrem became crowd favourite from the moment she arrived in Vienna. Her beautiful smile, warm interaction with the crowds, friendliness with other performers, cooperation and patience with the press, technicians, stage crew, directors and musicians during the long, tedious hours of rehearsal difficulties were qualities seldom seen by audiences and television viewers. Even before a note was sung, and Finland was touted as potential winner, the international media had already named her their favourite.

Her brilliant performance in Semi-Final 2 saw her a strong contender, especially when she soared vocally and physically out of the golden piano on the lift Beyoncé used when opening Atlantis, The Royal (a beach resort in Dubai) in 2023.

Then came the usual questions and lost votes from those ignorant of the rule that if Australia

wins Eurovision, it chooses a European country to be co-host the following year. It will never be in Australia.

Few know the incredible challenges Delta has overcome, including cancer and learning to speak again following salivary gland surgery. In Vienna, the international judges ranked her second out of 25 grand finalists, despite the familiar patterns of political voting, with countries such as Greece and Cyprus traditionally supporting one another and some Balkan nations awarding her nothing at all.

Despite Spain, Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia boycotting, daily protests and individual viewers refusing to watch, Israel proved a massive favourite cramming social pages with positive support and enough telephone votes to place Noam Bettan’s beautiful ballad second after Bulgaria’s meaningless, but repetitive, catchy song Bangangaranga which obviously appealed to almost everyone. Another surprise in the last few minutes proved female vampires are still alive in Romania, pushing them ahead of Delta.

Many beautiful moments shone amid the cruel online postings. Poor Sam Battle gave his frenetic all representing his country for just one point but sat dejectedly alone, abandoned by the whole UK delegation. Denmark’s Søren Torpegaard Lund came over and invited him to join the Danes who welcomed him on their bench. Their Queen is a friendly Aussie!

So, with Go-Jo’s dancing kangaroo informing Europeans that Australia is not Austria and the powerful Delta impact, Australia is firmly established as part of Eurovision which next year is in Sofia. Where? Eileen Walder

ENVIRONMENT

Lithium battery recycling concerns Fuel prices and supply concerns are driving significant demand for electric vehicles, including hybrids. This growth is also encouraging more households to invest in larger stand-alone solar systems for charging and energy storage.

Electric vehicle (EV) batteries are designed to last 15-20 years and may continue to be useful in less demanding roles for a period. However, recovering valuable materials and safely containing toxic chemicals at the end of their life is essential.

Australians are still learning how to safely dispose of smaller household lithium batteries. These batteries should never be placed in household bins, as they can ignite when crushed in trucks or waste facilities, causing dangerous fires. Battery terminals should be taped and taken to dedicated collection points such as Bunnings, Officeworks, Aldi, Woolworths and Coles. Swollen or damaged batteries should be placed in a glass jar or wrapped in a fire-blanket and taken immediately to the Noosa Waste and Resource Recovery Centre or Nambour Waste Management Facility.

The vast majority of materials included in EV batteries can be fully recycled and used in the production of new batteries. While some of the recycling process occurs in Australia, some, or all of the refined processing may still occur overseas, although onshore capacity is increasing. The major challenge facing EV battery recycling today is the low volumes due to most EVs still being relatively new.

The motor industry is addressing these concerns through a “circular economy” model focused on repairing, reusing, refurbishing and recycling batteries to reduce waste and keep valuable materials in circulation for as long as possible.

Local waste facilities do not accept lithium vehicle batteries, although many car manufacturers now include battery disposal or recycling programs as part of their purchase agreements. Australia’s official battery stewardship scheme – B-cycle – offers further guidance on safe battery recycling.

The growing issue has also increased support for repair, reuse and recycling initiatives, including the Australian Government’s proposed “Right to Repair” legislation. At the same time, new battery technologies are emerging that aim to use fewer rare minerals, improve safety, lower costs and enable faster charging, with solid-state batteries hoped to deliver maximum range and enhanced safety between 2028 and 2030.

DV Prevention Month Each May Qld marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and coercive control. The theme for 2026 is: Together Queenslanders can prevent domestic and family violence.

The statistics are sobering and individuals can sometimes seem overwhelmed as to what they can do. Simple and consistent steps can sometimes help prevent a situation spilling into domestic and family violence. Start by having conversations with the people around you, modelling healthy behaviours and creating a culture of respect and inclusion. If someone around you makes a ‘joke’ that belittles women, is sexist or disrespectful, gently call it out. Staying silent can normalise these harmful attitudes and behaviours that underpin violence in our communities. Check in regularly with family, friends and work colleagues.

You don’t have to be an expert but being able to point people to online information and pathways to support can help guide someone else towards safety. Talk to young people in your family about respect and consent. Be mindful of personal safety – never put yourself in danger or do anything that does not feel safe or appropriate for you.
