ALBERT ST TREE CLEARING CONCERNS RESIDENTS

Tree clearing along Albert St in Eumundi has sparked concern among residents, with locals seeking clearer information about why vegetation is being removed and what is planned for the site.

Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) issued an operational works approval for earthworks and vegetation clearing at 9-15 and 17-23 Albert St (OPW24/0259) on 2 September 2024. The approval relates to an earlier reconfiguring-a-lot decision (RAL21/0124) dated 24 April 2023 for a 19-lot residential subdivision, with lots ranging from about 700sqm to 1,044sqm.

Covey Associates was engaged to prepare an arboricultural report covering trees on the development sites, within the Albert St road reserve and on adjoining properties. The report stated that because of the extent of fill required to provide flood immunity for the new roadway and development area, most trees within the assessment area needed to be removed.

Plans indicate the site will be filled to support residential construction, including works extending into part of the Albert St road reserve for a new road connection, shared driveway and bio-retention basin. Retaining walls Cont. p3

are proposed on the western Cont. from p1 and northern boundaries due to the depth of fill.

A 10m revegetation buffer is proposed along the eastern edge between Noosa-Eumundi Rd and the development area, with further planting planned along the southern road reserve boundary to provide a buffer to nearby market parking.

Residents on Facebook community group sites also expressed their concerns regarding the potential for increased flooding risk due to the new development. One commentator stated that “The new development will put pressure on the already overloaded drainage along Napier Rd.” Approval conditions require the works not to worsen drainage impacts on other properties, such as by blocking natural overland flows.

Lot levels, excluding drainage reserves, must be constructed to provide flood immunity, consistent with the flood hazard overlay code.

Unrelated drainage and remediation works are also underway at the Albert St market carpark, operated by not-for-profit Experience Eumundi. The organisation said it is investing in improved drainage across the site to help move water into the established state government drainage system at the southern end of the carpark, after flooding has repeatedly affected carpark operations and flow-on revenue for the market and surrounding businesses. The works conducted by Experience Eumundi also include resurfacing internal access roads through the carpark to pre-existing levels, because sections have eroded over time.

Experience Eumundi general manager Mark Cameron said the organisation raised concerns

with the developer and SCC to ensure the construction works do not worsen flooding across the carpark.

SCC has informed Experience Eumundi that there will be no heavy vehicle movements or imports of fill on market days. Unless approved in writing by council, construction and earthworks – including heavy vehicle movements – are limited to between 7am-6pm Monday to Saturday, with no work on Sundays or public holidays. Outside these hours, only erosion and sediment controls and ongoing dust suppression may occur.

Flamenco in Eumundi The passionate rhythms and fiery movements of flamenco arrive in Eumundi this June, as Melbourne-based Arte Kanela Flamenco takes to the stage at the Eumundi School of Arts.

Eumundi Markets recognised as powerful business incubator As Qld gears up for Small Business Month in May, Experience Eumundi is shining a spotlight on the Eumundi Markets, with new research reinforcing their reputation as one of the Sunshine Coast’s most influential business incubators.

Experience Eumundi General Manager Mark Cameron said the iconic markets have long played a vital role in helping entrepreneurs transform ideas into viable businesses.

“Every business starts somewhere, and for many people that first step is the toughest. The Eumundi Markets provide a real world testing ground where emerging businesses can refine their products, build confidence and connect directly with customers,” said Mark.

While best known as one of the region’s most popular visitor attractions, the markets also operate as a thriving commercial hub, supporting around 600 stallholders and offering a direct entry point into the visitor economy.

COMMUNITY Cooroy Gymnastics Club Noosa Council has announced an upgrade for the Cooroy Gymnastics Club at the Cooroy Sports Complex.

Murphy Builders will finalise the design, build and fit out the extension and a new multipurpose indoor training space to give a range of outdoor sports a place to train during bad weather.

Mayor Frank Wilkie said, “The Cooroy Gymnastics Club is the shire’s only competitive gymnastics facility and currently has more than 550 athletes accessing the venue each week, with waiting lists for many programs. This investment will help the club meet growing demand while creating additional indoor training opportunities for other sporting groups.”

The $4.18M project forms part of the Cooroy Sports Complex Master Plan, which council endorsed in 2020 to support growing sports participation across the hinterland and wider Noosa Shire.

The new multi-purpose indoor training area will be available to other clubs based at the complex, including cricket, soccer and rugby league.

Real time fuel status A new fuel status feature with live information is now available to help our community monitor fuel availability across the Noosa and Gympie shires.

Information about the fuel tracker is provided free by the Qld Government and can now be viewed on Noosa Council’s Disaster Dashboard map as it becomes available. The new feature displays current fuel availability, indicative pricing and helps residents and visitors better plan essential travel. Council continues to closely monitor the impacts the fuel situation is having on day-to-day operations and is guided by updated advice from both the federal and state governments. Fixed The Eumundi Residents Assn has commenced the Eumundi Repair Café – a monthly event to get those slightly damaged or nolonger-functioning items back into use and out of landfill. A collection of skilled volunteers will endeavour to repair your items.

The café is part of an international movement kicked off in Europe and enthusiastically taken up across the world. It brings together a wide variety of skills to extend the life of household products, clothes and bric-a-brac while meeting people over a coffee.

SCC Mayor Natoli attended the second meeting in Eumundi to show council’s support and interest.

self-confidence and academic engagement. For many families these outcomes contribute to a happier and more balanced home life. For boys who struggle with friendships at school, dance provides the opportunity to interact with new friends and understand that together the team can make magic, earn applause and pride.

In 2025, the Sydney Eisteddfod reintroduced the Boys Dance Group section. More than 200 boys participated, with 9 all-boys groups and even more performing in mixed events. General Manager Heather Campbell said, “We were thrilled to see so many young men take to the stage and showcase the strength, energy and camaraderie they bring to dance.” One Scots College boy summed it up simply: “Boys like to dance too.”

On the Sunshine Coast, over 50 boys have graduated through Noosa’s Performing Arts Factory, many going on to professional careers on cruise ships, with Disney, as directors or pre-

professional companies.

Proprietor Bridgette Kay said the girls are privileged with so many opportunities to study pas de deux and commercial numbers. Among the 10 boys currently enrolled in specialist classes are brothers Lachlan, Reilly L-R Lachlan, Flynn & Reilly Noakes with Elizabeth and Flynn Noakes, who have been dancing for Derby Head of British Ballet Organisation, Australia several years and have all served as School Captains at Eumundi State School. Reilly said, “I love dance because it’s one of the only places where I can fully be myself without needing to explain.” Lachlan added that he loves being able to “express his creativity through hip-hop.”

Dance can also be life changing on a deeply personal level. The Qld Ballet enraptured 7yo James Harlow seated in the front row. He begged parents Mary and Gene for dance lessons instead of playing rugby like his brothers. Born deaf, James attended Hear and Say a Brisbane, notfor-profit organisation that encouraged James throughout his education, dancing and daily life.

Mary chose Irish Dancing for James, which brought him joy and camaraderie, a respect for girls, physical fitness, discipline, social confidence, teamwork and the challenges of James with his competition. She begs all Champion’s Trophy parents to try dance. “It’s better than loneliness or

mental problems due to computer addiction.”

Teachers, adjudicators and musicians would face James, giving a nod with the first beat.

Then he soared to Irish Dancers success after success, winning numerous awards including Qld Irish Dance Champion. Several classmates were neurodivergent, all enjoying the pleasure and skills dance provides.

Australia has a proud history of male dance legends, including Sir Robert Helpmann, Garth Welch, David Gulpilil, Paul Mercurio, Wade Robson and today, Adam Garcia, Sasha Farber, Cody Simpson and the Royal Ballet’s Steven McRae. While male dancers are still in minority and suffer stigma, perceptions are shifting.

Boys from schools across Sydney perform on the Opera House stage with confidence and camaraderie and James’ inspirational videos are timely reminders of how important inclusivity is to the future.

For the past 5 years, council have been trialling different weed management strategies at 2 hinterland sites to find out what really works.

Now they are sharing that knowledge through free community events in Witta on 22&23 May. SCC App We often notice issues that need to be rectified – potholes, graffiti, something that needs repair. Many councillors actively use the SCC app because it’s quicker and easier than sending an email. It is a one stop shop for making a service request that allows you to take a photo, pin the location and summarise the issue.

Requests are efficiently directed to the right team, and users receive updates to track progress. If you report it, council can attend to it! Service requests are not the only feature, you can access Disaster Hub information, and it will even remind you which bins to put out so you don’t have to rely on the neighbours.

Aged Care reform explained The national aged care reforms introduced on 1 November 2025 represented the most significant changes to the system in years. Their rollout has been challenging, leaving many people receiving care at home confused about higher costs and changes in how support is delivered. However, some help is at hand.

Council on the Ageing (COTA), in partnership with the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), is offering 2 free webinars on 1 and 30 June from 2-4pm. These sessions will explain what the Australian Govt’s recent announcement means for you, particularly the decision to classify services such as showering, dressing and continence management as government funded clinical care.

The webinars will also examine how the Integrated Assessment Tool algorithm has contributed to poor service allocation outcomes, and clarify how higher everyday living charges in residential aged care are intended to work for services such as inroom televisions, meal choices and Wi-Fi access.

SunnyKids calls community to act With an estimated 500 domestic and family violence incidents reported every day across Qld, SunnyKids is leading a strong community call to action this May, marking Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month as a vital time for awareness, prevention and support.

The SunnyKids registered charity provides essential support services to children and families experiencing domestic and family violence and hardship. Its integrated support network provides a range of life-saving services to thousands of families each year.

New figures from SunnyKids highlight the growing demand for services across the region.

During 2024-2025, the organisation supported 3,607 individuals, a 30% increase on the previous year. This included 1,261 adults and 2,346 children, with the number of children requiring assistance rising by 34%.

SunnyKids also delivered 8,262 nights of emergency accommodation and facilitated

hundreds of critical referrals, including 98 to Najidah Refuge and 745 to the Cooroy Family Support Centre, reflecting both the urgency and complexity of Kathleen Hope cases within the community.

SunnyKids CEO Kathleen Hope said the data reinforces the importance of collective action.

“Domestic and family violence is one of the most significant challenges facing our community, and children are often the most impacted. Prevention Month is an opportunity for everyone to raise awareness and be part of meaningful change,” said Kathleen.

Throughout May, SunnyKids will deliver a coordinated campaign of community events, awareness initiatives and fundraising activities to support children and families at risk.

Community members, businesses and organisations are encouraged to get involved and support local services. Donations can be made, with all funds directly assisting families impacted by domestic and family violence. Visit: sunnykids.org.au.

AI & TikTok: What families need to know TikTok recently introduced features that allow user videos to be remixed or transformed using AI tools by default. As this was not clearly communicated upfront, it raised concerns among creators. Following public backlash, the platform has moved to improve transparency and user controls.

What’s important to understand When you upload a video or image: You still own your content But you grant the platform a broad licence to use, analyse, and modify it That content may contribute to improving AI systems.

This issue is not unique to TikTok. Platforms owned by Meta, such as Facebook and Instagram, as well as YouTube, also use large volumes of user content to develop and improve their AI technologies.

Artists such as Taylor Swift are now trademarking their voice and likeness. AI can generate new content that sounds or looks like a person without copying an original file – something traditional

copyright does not fully cover.

What this means for families The issue is no longer just who owns content, but who controls it and how it may be used in the future. Once shared, content can be analysed, reused or help train systems that remain invisible to users. For children and young people, this raises long term concerns about identity, consent, and digital footprints.

On 24 April I was honoured to be invited to attend an Anzac Day Service at Eumundi State School. It was a privilege to attend and pay respect to our Anzacs and the many other men and women who have served our country. It was also wonderful to see so many parents in attendance, and

the service conducted by the school was both respectful and fitting. It is encouraging to see the Anzac spirit being passed on to a new generation.

The following day I attended Dawn Service at the Verrierdale Hall which was well attended, and then the later Anzac Service held in Eumundi – although I arrived a little late after being called away to a job. On behalf of myself and the other officers from Eumundi Police, I would like to thank all service men and women for their service.

On 18 April a crash occurred on Dean Rd, Verrierdale, in which a cyclist was knocked from their bike and sustained serious injuries. I have been advised that they are recovering slowly after spending a few weeks in hospital. The driver of the motor vehicle which was involved in the crash has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm.

The Noosa Hinterland region of the Sunshine Coast is a popular area for cyclists, with many riders drawn to its terrain. However, some of the roads are narrow and have no shoulders, which increases the risk of a crash if due care is not taken. All road users, including both motorists

and cyclists, must show care and consideration for others. For motorists, taking a little extra time and waiting for a safe place to pass may be inconvenient, but it could prevent serious injury or something far worse. Cyclists also have an important role to play and should do everything they can to keep themselves safe on our roads.

Throughout April Eumundi Police attended 137 calls for service. In addition to responding to those calls, officers were proactive in targeting drink and drug driving, with 5 people charged with drink driving and 10 people charged with drug driving during the month. Drug driving offences of this kind involve the detection of substances such as cannabis, methamphetamine, MDMA or cocaine in a driver’s system. Even where a driver may not appear to be under the influence, the presence of these drugs can still cause impairment and create a significant risk on the road.

Fewer food miles and more smiles With rising food and fuel costs, keeping your purchase of food to the local area can reduce food miles and bring an enormous amount of satisfaction, not to mention improved taste and flavours. If you grow some of your own food at home but find that a punnet of young seedlings all mature at the same time and you have excess, there are some initiatives that can maximise your efforts and enhance your dinner table.

Eumundi Harvest Swap recently marked its 6th anniversary. The swap is held on the last Thursday of every month at the Eumundi Community Gardens, 38 Memorial Dr and is all about sharing excess homegrown produce. Participants set up from about 10am and barter, starting at 10.15am.

Alongside fruit, vegetables and herbs, people also trade potted plants, seedlings, seeds, jams,

on tour cookbooks, recipes, garden tools, and also share gardening advice. While waiting for one of the organisers to officially begin the swap, members enjoy plenty of lively conversation. Once the swap starts, the standing rule is simple: no pushing or shoving and everyone helps themselves to what they would like from the tables. Afterwards, many stay on for morning tea and more conversation.

Cooroy launched its own Harvest Swap on 19 April and meets every Sunday from 10am12noon at the Bendigo Bank Community Pavilion at 26 Emerald St. They welcome anything that has been made, baked or sewn, with a focus on homegrown food and garden produce. Rosella jam The dramatic red colour of the rosella fruit was the drawcard to the annual Big Rosella Field Day at Petersen’s Farm at Reilly Rd, Woolooga held on the first weekend in May. The popular event is hosted by CC and Greg Petersen – the farmer and the cook – assisted by volunteers in bright lime green shirts with the rosella logo. Rosellas have been ‘naturalised’ in Australia, and it’s thought they were introduced

by Indonesian fishermen thousands of years ago.

The farm tour, led by Greg helped the attentive audience understand how rosella bushes grow, that the yellow flower only lasts one day, and how

The crop can yield 6-7 tonne, with a small team of pickers who, Greg said, “last week picked a tonne in 3 days” at the height of the season, slowing down “to 700kg a week.” Greg described the challenges the weather poses for producers: how frost will destroy the plants; how 1 year they had no rain for 5 months and watered by hand; and that fungus, nematodes and aphids are treated with organic, natural pesticides. The farm also grows chillies, pineapples, okra, gooseberries and the high-value tomatillo.

The Woolooga Farm Kitchen was busy all day with scones, rosella jam and cream, and a variety of great meals. The shop had a wide range of jams, chutneys and pickles … with a tasting area to help make a choice to suit your palate. Following the foodie theme, a cooking demonstration led by Matt Golinski highlighted the use of this ‘superfood’.

Adding to the success of the field day, a demonstration of an agricultural-sized drone to spray for weeds, fertiliser or seed showed the potential for this new technology.

Food lovers were well catered for, with a rose gin especially for Mother’s Day, zucchini flowers, farm-raised goat meat, local honey, pumpkins and organic produce. Local growers offered lamb, angus beef and sausages – ensuring every visitor left with a full shopping bag. Ruth Hickey

Carol Vinson – Former Matildas Captain

Waltzing with a Matilda Former Matildas captain and striker Carol Vinson has joined the Eumundi Magpies FC as an assistant coach and mentor for several girls’ and boys’ outdoor soccer teams. The opportunity came about through her connection with a program at Eumundi State School, where she worked with small groups of Yr 5 and 6 students.

After representing her country internationally – where she earned 13 caps – Carol retired from active competition. Now she takes great pleasure in promoting sports to all genders and generations.

She is thrilled with the success of women’s sport, remembering how she had to support herself with full-time employment to fund training and touring at an elite level. When talking to Eumundi Voice, Carol said, “she loved playing and training” and was “grateful for the honour of representing Australia”. She also reflected on the life skills she learned through sport, believing her team sport training – across multiple sports and athletics – helped her create employment for herself while competing at the highest level possible. Beyond fitness and skill development, she recognises the lasting value of the transferable skills learned in a team environment.

With the Magpies, Carol aspires to “help each

player improve as an individual and as a team”, while learning respect for one another, sound communication skills, camaraderie and longterm friendships. “You can learn so much and set yourself up with good social skills for life,” she said.

The Magpies soccer teams appear to be in very good hands. The community has rallied behind Magpies FC founder Fern and his vision to create exceptional sporting opportunities for Eumundi and District.

The Magpies FC are supported by CWA, Eumundi Rotary, Eumundi and District Community Assn and the Showgrounds Assn, which provides a permanent outdoor venue.

Mary-Lou returns to Noosa for launch

Slow Travels to The Hobart Hotel Former Sunshine Coast journalist and best-selling author, Mary-Lou Stephens spends months slow travelling, staying in exotic places to research and write her novels. I recently caught up with MaryLou on her whirlwind book-signing tour of 26 venues, among them the Maleny Writers’ Festival on 3 May and Noosa Library on 5 May. Within days of publication, her latest novel – The Hobart Hotel – reached #4 in Fiction by Australian Authors and #10 on the International Fiction Bestseller List.

The novel unfolds across 2 compelling storylines and characters. The first Sabine, in 1939 on the brink of WWII is determined to hide her past by manipulating, lying and cheating. In Tasmania disguised in her new alluring persona, she mingles with society’s cream before becoming trapped and transported to Uruguay.

In Uruguay, Sabine discovers the lavish luxury of partying with famous stars, glamourous gowns and jewellery, involving Nazi plans for South America. Here, she finds herself no longer the manipulator, but the manipulated.

Mary-Lou spent 5 weeks in Uruguay “walking in Sabine’s shoes” to authentically bring Punte del Este, Piriapolis and Montevideo’s Palacio Salvoto to life. She also discovered US espionage tactics and Uruguay’s strategic importance to both sides as the war erupted.

Meeting original Ladybirds ensured authenticity to the opening descriptions and Mary-Lou’s book launch fulfilled a dream in chorus-girl costume.

While I struggled to feel empathy for Sabine’s ruthless self-serving behaviour and wished Mr Grey/Wright/Blake would escape, The Hobart Hotel’s intrigue, passionate tension, riveting plots and exotic location had me fully engrossed.

Too young for bowel cancer?

Not anymore For decades, bowel cancer has been viewed as a disease of later life – a condition that was quietly filed under “something to worry about after 50.”

However that assumption is rapidly becoming outdated.

Across Australia and much of the world, bowel cancer is rising in people who until recently, wouldn’t have been considered at risk at all.

Doctors are now seeing patients in their 20s, 30s and 40s walk into clinics with symptoms that in the past, might have been dismissed as stress, diet or minor digestive issues. Increasingly, those symptoms are turning out to be something far more serious.

A shift no one expected Bowel cancer – also known as colorectal cancer – remains one of the most common cancers. What has changed is who is getting it.

Younger adults now make up a growing proportion of new diagnoses. Globally, around 1 in 5 bowel cancer cases occur in people under 55.

Even more striking is how quickly the numbers have risen over the past 20-30 years. This isn’t just

a statistical blip – it’s a clear and consistent trend that has researchers concerned and, in many cases, puzzled.

The lifestyle factor One of the strongest explanations lies in how modern life has changed.

Today’s diets tend to be higher in ultra-processed foods and much lower in fibre than those of previous generations. Fast food, refined sugars and convenience meals have become staples, while whole grains, fruits and vegetables are often lacking.

At the same time, many people are moving less.

Long hours spent sitting at desks, increased screen time and reduced physical activity all contribute to poorer gut health and increased cancer risk.

There is also growing evidence that these lifestyle factors influence the gut microbiome – the complex community of bacteria living in our digestive system. When this balance is disrupted, it may promote inflammation, and over time contribute to cancer development.

Obesity and early risk Rising obesity rates are another major piece of the puzzle. Excess body fat is linked to chronic inflammation and hormonal changes that can increase cancer risk.

What is particularly concerning is that obesity is now affecting people at younger ages than ever before, meaning the body is exposed to these risks for longer.

The problem of being overlooked Beyond biology, there is a human factor at play: delayed diagnosis.

Because bowel cancer has long been associated with older adults, symptoms in younger people are often not taken as seriously – by patients or by healthcare providers. A young adult experiencing rectal bleeding or persistent abdominal pain might be told it is haemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome or stress.

In many cases it takes multiple visits – and months of ongoing symptoms – before further testing is done. By this stage the cancer may be more advanced.

The screening gap Australia’s national bowel cancer screening

program has traditionally focused on people aged 50-74 (recently lowered to start at 45 in some discussions and regions). While this makes sense based on historical risk patterns, it leaves a growing group of younger adults outside routine screening.

That means early detection often depends entirely on recognising symptoms – and acting on them quickly.

Signs that should not be ignored One of the biggest challenges is that bowel cancer symptoms can be subtle or easily explained away.

But there are certain warning signs that should never be ignored regardless of age: Blood in the stool Persistent changes in bowel habits Ongoing abdominal discomfort Unexplained weight loss Fatigue or iron deficiency.

These symptoms don’t always mean cancer – but they do mean it’s worth checking.

What you can do While not all cases are preventable, there are practical steps that can reduce risk: Eat a diet rich in fibre and whole foods Limit processed and red meats Stay physically active Maintain a healthy weight Avoid smoking and limit alcohol Pay attention to your body – and seek help early.

A new reality The rise in bowel cancer among younger people is one of the most important health shifts of our time. It reflects broader changes in lifestyle, environment and possibly even the unseen world inside our gut. However there is a powerful counterpoint: when detected early, bowel cancer is highly treatable. The challenge now is not just scientific – it’s cultural. Recognising that this is no longer a disease of “later” could be the difference between catching it early and catching it too late.

Because the truth is simple and increasingly urgent: you don’t have to be older to be at risk.

IDAHOBIT IDAHOBIT stands for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia. It is celebrated internationally on 17 May, in recognition of the date in 1990 when the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from its classification of diseases. The acronym might be clumsy but it’s a reminder that while there have been significant advances towards equality for LGBTIQ people, they continue to face stigma and discrimination.

It’s been a rocky road towards equality. Prior to the WHO’s declassification of homosexuality as a disease, homosexuals were often given shock treatment to 'cure' their sexuality. In Australia, Qld didn’t decriminalise homosexuality until 1991, long after South Australia’s decriminalisation in 1975. The last state to decriminalise homosexuality was Tasmania in 1997. The majority of Australians today were alive during a time when it was illegal to be gay.

Today, the consensus of scientific research and clinical literature demonstrate that same-sex attractions, feelings and behaviours are normal and positive variations of human sexuality.
