The Easter festivities start at the Original Eumundi Markets on Saturday 4 April from 7.30am-2pm, with a special Easter market designed for the whole family. From 9am, children can take part in the Easter egg hunt, with plastic eggs hidden throughout the market. Once collected, eggs can be taken to the pink building and exchanged for delicious chocolate treats. The morning will also feature face painting, prizes to be won and live music to enjoy as you shop and explore the market stalls.

Eumundi Square will hold their annual Easter egg hunt on Friday 10 April at 10.30am. This much loved event is free and open to everyone, bringing children and families together for a morning of laughter, excitement and sweet surprises. Children are encouraged to bring their own Cont. p3

Curated Plate’s opening event The Curated Plate Festival has unveiled details for its opening event on 24 July. Festival Culinary Director and chef Peter Kuruvita has teamed up with Mal Meiers, head chef at Alsahwa Estate in Palmwoods to host Island Fire. Held from 11.30am4pm at Alsawha Estate, the event will showcase Sri Lankan cuisine and feature performances by Sri Lankan drummers and dancers.

Bookfest 2026 If you’re looking for holiday reading or you just love to read at any time, Noosa Bookfest is the place to be from 10-12 April at the Tewantin State School Hall from 9am-5pm.

The Bookfest has been an annual fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Noosa Daybreak for many years and offers a treasure trove of books, puzzles and games. Proceeds go to support local homelessness initiatives and other Rotary projects. The G Contemporary exhibition program The G Contemporary gallery in Hastings St has unveiled its exhibition calendar for 2026, showcasing a diverse lineup of both emerging and established artists.

A solo exhibition by emerging artist Brandi Hughes runs from 16 April to 3 May. Originally from Salt Lake City in the United States, Hughes relocated to Australia in 2014 and has been dedicated to fine art since 2022. A special opening night celebration will be held on 18 April.

From 2-16 July, the gallery will host a vibrant solo feature by Dai Li, a Sunshine Coast–based ceramicist and watercolour artist known for her delicate forms and expressive surfaces.

In spring, artist Michael Whitehead – who began his creative career as a graphic artist before shifting his focus to painting – will exhibit new works from 1-18 October.

The year concludes with a Still Life Exhibition by artists Anne-Marie Zanetti, Peta Minnici, Jo Young, Peggy Zephyr and Mitchell Cheeseman, which runs from 26 November to 13 December.

Qld electoral boundaries The Qld Redistribution Commission (QRC) has recently proposed changes to Qld State Government electoral boundaries, primarily as a result of population growth. Under the Qld Electoral Act 1992 the QRC must periodically review the state’s 93 electorates to ensure voter numbers in each district are as evenly balanced as possible. The proposed changes are expected to be finalised in June and would take effect from the 2028 state election. For the full report visit: redistribution.ecq.qld.gov.au.

Changes are proposed to the electorates of Nicklin and Ninderry starting with new names – Nambour and Coolum respectively – to better reflect their geographic identities.

Apart from a name change, the QRC has recommended shifting the community of Eumundi from the current Ninderry electorate into the renamed Nambour district, with the new boundary following the railway line. While several submissions advocated for Eumundi to be included in the Noosa electorate, the Commission concluded that doing so would require wider boundary adjustments that could compromise the balance of voter numbers across neighbouring districts.

Under the draft boundaries the new Nambour electorate would also expand to include: The southern portion of the Gympie local government area including Traveston, Amamoor, Imbil and Lake Borumba.

The northern sections of the Glass House electorate stretching from Flaxton to Kenilworth.

Areas surrounding Black Mountain within the Noosa local government area, including most of Cooroy and parts of Federal.

For the state electorate of Noosa, the QRC proposes adding the northern portion of Federal currently located within Nicklin. Although community submissions suggested incorporating the township of Cooroy into Noosa, the Commission determined that Cooroy should remain where it is to maintain balanced voter numbers between Noosa and the new Nambour electorate.

Local MPs – Ninderry MP Dan Purdie, Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and Nicklin MP Marty Hunt – have encouraged constituents to provide feedback on the proposed changes. Submissions and objections can be lodged with the QRC until 9 April, either via email at QRCsubmissions@ecq. qld.gov.au or online at t.ly/iUMQR.

Launch of Repair Café and Community Centre campaign The Eumundi Residents Association (ERA) will host a free lunch supported by The Bake House, Eumundi on 16 April from 11am-1.30pm at the Eumundi QCWA Hall, 78 Memorial Dr. The event will include the first Eumundi Repair Café where you can bring along items for repair rather than throwing them out. Handy people will be there with wood tools, a sewing machine and some IT skills. ERA hopes the café will be held monthly and the range of handy people will grow. All are welcome to join in.

At the lunch, a campaign by ERA to establish a community centre will be outlined. Your ideas on what services we need are welcome, such as an internet café with office equipment, a locals and visitor information centre, a readily available meeting and exhibition space, support for local families and seniors, or a Repair Café (repaircafe. org/en/).

Details of ERA initiatives to establish a 10-year plan for Eumundi’s future development and the need for resident-only parking zones in town will be available. Initial details on the ERA run Eumundi Writers Festival 2026 will also be provided. Cr Law and Cr Suarez have been invited to attend.

Councils respond to community calls for alternative waste services Following a recent article in Eumundi Voice Issue 136 examining the rise in illegal dumping across local council areas, councils on the Sunshine Coast and Noosa have responded to growing community calls for changes to waste disposal services.

The article generated strong engagement on social media, with residents calling for the return of kerbside collections, free tip vouchers and reduced fees for disposing of green waste and bulky household items. Many commenters suggested the removal of these services had contributed to the reported increase in illegal dumping.

A Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) spokesperson said council is actively investigating a range of options for managing large-item waste, including kerbside collections, skip bag services and tip vouchers.

However, the spokesperson said kerbside cleanups are not considered the most environmentally responsible approach. This view is supported by Keep Qld Beautiful, which encourages councils to prioritise innovative recycling initiatives and community collection days at waste resource recovery centres.

“Kerbside collections present several challenges.

They are a high-cost service that increases public liability, contribute to litter entering waterways and the environment, and often result in collected items going directly to landfill rather than being recycled.”

SCC said it remains focused on improving resource recovery outcomes and reducing waste to landfill, supporting a sustainable, liveable and connected Sunshine Coast community. Information on large household item disposal is available on council’s website, and alternative waste options were recently discussed with the Sunshine Coast Citizens’ Panel.

Div 9 Cr Suarez said her personal view was that experiences at other councils offering both 12

kerbside collections and tip vouchers showed kerbside services can unintentionally increase dumping.

“Residents often place bulky items on the kerb throughout the year, particularly during moves and in unit developments. This creates unsightly streets, inconvenience for neighbours and significant clean-up costs.”

Cr Suarez said councillors would continue exploring alternatives while recognising that residents are increasingly using online platforms to give away unwanted items, and that new council services could impact local waste collection businesses.

Noosa Council also addressed the issue with Waste Services Manager Kyrone Dodd noting that kerbside collection programs come at significant cost.

“The last kerbside collection in early 2019 cost around $500,000, yet only 20% of ratepayers used the service. There were also serious environmental risks, including illegal dumping of asbestos, batteries and chemicals,” said Kyrone.

Kyrone explained the most equitable approach to disposing of waste for Noosa ratepayers is through a user-pays model.

“When services such as kerbside collection or tip vouchers are funded through general rates, every household pays the same amount regardless of how much waste they generate. This broadbrush approach means low-waste households are effectively subsidising the disposal habits and purchasing behaviours of others. In contrast, a user-pays system directly links cost to individual consumption and disposal, making it the fairest method as residents contribute proportionally to the waste they generate.

Under state law, penalties for illegal dumping can reach $3,338 for individuals and $12,517 for companies. Kyrone said the environmental impacts from illegal dumping were significant, with green waste spreading weeds and asbestos requiring costly clean ups.

“When you compare that to the cost of taking a medium-sized trailer or car boot load of household or green waste to the local tip, you wonder why a small minority of people continue to run the huge financial risks of getting caught dumping their waste illegally.”

The first houses in Eumundi sold for approximately $600 in the early 1900s. Today, the median price for a house in Eumundi is $1,545,000. Clearly a great investment.

Eumundi Rotary rallies support for PNG health initiative The Eumundi Rotary Club is calling on the community to join its latest humanitarian effort – supporting the delivery of basic health care services and essential health education to the people of Kemabolo village in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

To raise awareness for this important initiative, the club will host a special cultural event featuring an authentic Papua New Guinean mumu, a traditional earth oven feast. Guests will enjoy a generous selection of chicken, beef, pork and lamb, served alongside vegetables, fresh salads and a dessert course. Tea and coffee will be available, with beer, wine and soft drinks offered for purchase. BYO options are welcome.

New Battery project planned for Cooroy Mountain Rd A major new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) proposed for 92 Cooroy Mountain Rd is attracting significant interest across Qld as the state continues its shift toward a more resilient, renewable-ready electricity network.

The project, put forward by Victorian-based energy developer Enervest outlines a 100MW, 4-hour storage facility capable of delivering 400MWh of dispatchable power. The system is designed to store excess energy during low-demand periods and release it when the grid is under pressure, potentially easing peak-time strain and improving overall stability.

The proposed site sits at the southern end of the block next to the existing Energex substation and covers roughly 3ha. Planning documents indicate that the layout has been designed to minimise visual impact by setting the facility back from Cooroy Mountain Rd, while also ensuring an efficient connection point to existing grid infrastructure.

Typically, the BESS units are housed in shipping containers that are approximately 3-3.5m height.

The switchgear buildings and the main transformers are around 6-7m high respectively.

Enervest CEO Ross Warby told Eumundi Voice that Enervest was currently updating its development application following new planning requirements that were recently introduced by the Qld Government. This includes completing any additional technical assessments.

Local engagement is already underway, with residents and stakeholders attending information sessions to better understand the proposal and voice their perspectives.

“We’re genuinely looking forward to working alongside the local community and Cooroy and Noosa region businesses, not as bystanders, but as local partners. Our aim is to deliver meaningful local participation and support regional capability, while strengthening the stability and resilience of the electricity network,” said Ross.

Perimenopause: The transition no one prepared you for For many women perimenopause arrives quietly – then all at once. One day you’re going about your normal routine, and the next you’re wondering why your sleep is disrupted, your mood feels unpredictable, and your body seems to be changing without warning. Despite affecting millions of women perimenopause remains one of the least openly discussed phases of life.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional period leading up to menopause when hormone levels – particularly estrogen and progesterone – begin to fluctuate. It can start as early as the mid-30s but is more common in the 40s. This phase can last anywhere from a few years to over a decade, ending when menstruation has stopped for 12 consecutive months.

The Symptoms: More than just hot flushes While hot flushes and night sweats are widely recognised, perimenopause is far more complex.

Women may experience: Irregular periods Sleep disturbances Anxiety or low mood Brain fog and forgetfulness Weight changes, especially around the abdomen 16

Decreased libido Joint aches and fatigue Because these symptoms often appear gradually and vary widely, many women don’t immediately connect them to hormonal changes.

The emotional impact Perimenopause doesn’t just affect the body – it can deeply impact mental and emotional wellbeing. Women often describe feeling “not like themselves,” which can be confusing and isolating. Balancing work, family and personal expectations during this time can add further stress, particularly when symptoms are misunderstood or dismissed.

Why we don’t talk about it enough There is still a lingering stigma around menopause and ageing. As a result many women suffer in silence or assume their symptoms are something they simply have to endure. Lack of awareness – even among healthcare providers – can delay diagnosis and support.

What can help?

The good news is that there are effective ways to manage perimenopause: Lifestyle adjustments: Regular exercise, balanced nutrition and good sleep hygiene can significantly improve symptoms.

Stress management: Mindfulness, yoga or simple breathing techniques can help regulate mood and anxiety.

Medical support: Hormone therapy and other medications may be appropriate for some women – individualised care is key.

Open conversations: Speaking with friends, family or support groups can reduce feelings of isolation and normalise the experience.

Empowerment through awareness Perimenopause is not a disorder – it’s a natural life stage. But understanding it is crucial. With the right information and support, women can navigate this transition with confidence rather than confusion.

I didn’t sign up for this!

A few years ago I went to see Menopause The Musical with friends. They all spoke about their perimenopause issues – it was an education but at the time I wasn’t experiencing anything. If I’m honest, I thought I’d sail through this time of my life. How wrong was I? I’ve discovered that being armed with knowledge is incredibly powerful. We’ve all heard of hot flushes, but I had no idea about itchy ears, frozen shoulder, unexplained pains and don’t get me started on the rage! After joining a couple of Facebook groups for women going through this journey, I discovered that not only are these things normal, but so many other women are struggling too.

For most of my life I have had a sunny disposition, been very level-headed and had oodles of patience – that has now all gone out of the window. Although it’s liberating to sometimes speak your mind, it's not always a good thing.

The worst thing for me is the rage, feeling depressed and being overwhelmed, that’s why after persevering on a natural route, I have now booked an appointment with my GP to discuss HRT. Is HRT the answer? It isn’t the answer for everyone and maybe it won’t be the answer for me, but I recognise that something has to change and doing what I’m currently doing isn’t working. After researching the pros and cons, I feel that it is an avenue worth exploring. I have to do something before I “off” the husband!

This stage of life isn’t all doom and gloom; there are some changes I’m enjoying such as not stressing about the small things, saying no, feeling more confident in myself and knowing my self-worth.

Ladies, forearmed is forewarned. I’ve found that websites like wellfemme.com.au are a valuable source of information, and Facebook groups such as Menopause Australia Support Group and Perimenopause Hub – Expert Advice and Peer Support are very supportive and a great place to chat with others experiencing the same things.

Of course, if you’re not following Melani Sanders on Facebook – the founder of the We Do Not Care Club – you’re missing out.

Last but by no means least, talk to your partner.

Yes, their breathing, chewing, fidgeting and general existence is annoying, but they can’t help unless you tell them how you’re feeling. Mitch Little Academy is a great Facebook page for your partner (and you) to follow. Mitch has some great, well-presented and funny tips for the partner to help them understand and survive their other half going through perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause.

Hang in there ladies. I’m led to believe it gets better. Remember you’re not alone.

Easter parking trial A 4-day monitored Easter parking trial will help Noosa Council better understand how Lions Park should be used during peak visitor periods. From 3-6 April the park will operate as overflow parking following council’s endorsement at its Ordinary Meeting. For the remainder of the school holiday period, the area will close to vehicles to allow direct comparison between parking and non -parking conditions.

Chief Executive Officer Larry Sengstock said the trial would provide a valuable opportunity to gather real-time data on congestion, community benefit and the overall performance of the precinct during one of Noosa’s busiest times. He noted that while Lions Park has long been used

for overflow parking, the lack of comparative data has made long term decision making difficult.

With all Australian states sharing holiday dates this Easter, significant visitor increases are expected.

Surveys and on-site traffic assessments will track congestion patterns, road network performance and user experience.

Pedestrian safety will also be enhanced, with temporary barriers and directional signage placed at key intersections to separate foot traffic from vehicles.

Findings from the trial will feed into the Go Noosa End of Year report in May and assist in establishing a long-term position on peak-period parking at Lions Park. Larry said any future approach must demonstrate clear community benefit, aligning with the Destination Management Plan and Qld’s Land Act.

older neighbourhoods where leaks are more likely to occur. The rollout will replace existing meters with modern digital devices that securely transmit daily water use data, enabling quicker leak detection, earlier customer notifications and clearer billing.

CEO Anna Jackson said the program was an important step in strengthening the region’s water network. She described digital metering as a major investment in modernising services and improving customer experience, helping reduce water loss and prevent unexpectedly high bills.

Unlike traditional street-by-street installation, the new meters will be deployed by network blocks – an approach that provides more accurate insights into potential leaks across the broader water system. Anna emphasised the value of minimising water loss, noting that every conserved drop contributed to regional water security and reduces maintenance costs.

The program follows successful pilots across 10,000 properties, which saved more than 800M litres of water and over $5M for customers, while helping identify leaks in more than 3,000 homes. Installations will be carried out by ETS Infrastructure Management, Unitywater’s long term meter services partner.

Customers receiving a digital meter in 2026 will be informed directly and provided around 10 days’ notice before their installation window. The upgrade is free, takes up to an hour and residents do not need to be home.

School holiday activities at the library

Libraries are a great place to learn and explore. This Easter school holidays, Noosa Libraries are hosting a variety of free, hands-on activities designed to inspire young minds.

Children aged 6-12 can craft their own Sock Bunny by transforming a sock into a plushie, with sessions held at Noosaville on 7 April and Cooroy on 9 April from 10-11am.

For budding designers, the library is offering 3Dprinted bookmark workshops using Tinkercad.

These sessions are suitable for ages 8-12 and will take place at Noosaville on 8 April, and at Cooroy on 16 April, with two time slots available: 2-2.45pm and 3-3.45pm.

For an outdoor activity, discover local frog species.

Participants will search for frogs on a guided walk and then return indoors to create a frog habitat using LEGO kits. This activity will be held at Noosaville on 14 April and Cooroy on 13 April from 10-11.30am.

Dancing at Kandanga Hall Kandanga Hall was brimming with energy on 21 March as the Cooloola Coast Dances Group hosted an evening filled with happy faces and enthusiastic dancers. Several attendees received personalised guidance throughout the night.

Learning new steps, mastering partner holds and building confidence can be challenging, yet each participant approached the experience with determination and enjoyment. By the end of the evening, their progress was evident as they danced with growing assurance.

A total of 45 patrons took to the floor to enjoy the lively music of the Mystiques. Dave kept dancers on their toes with an engaging selection of upbeat, crowd pleasing tunes that helped set a vibrant rhythm for the night.

The evening also featured a delightful supper, warmly received by all. The dance concluded with an introductory walk-through of the Jolly Miller Mix Up Dance, providing a fun and lighthearted finish to the event.

EUMUNDI ROTARY CLUB

Desks for Kemabolo School Kemabolo school was closed a few years ago after falling into disrepair. Thanks mainly to the efforts of 2 of Eumundi Rotarians – Rocky and Kilagi

Nielsen – the school has since been refurbished and extended and now serves around 500 students from the village and surrounding areas.

Despite this progress the school needs support, as limited funding has meant classrooms cannot yet be fully furnished. Enter Eumundi State School (ESS). Seventy desks that had been sitting in storage were kindly donated to Eumundi Rotary Club for shipment to the school in Kemabolo.

A small team consisting of Derek Robinson (ESS’s maintenance and “do anything” man), John Broadbent and Rocky and Kilagi, moved the desks from school storage onto trailers for transport to Kemabolo. These desks will be an asset for the school, as many of the students still have to sit on the classroom floor.

The Kemabolo Headmaster later called to express his deep gratitude to the school and to Rotary for this valuable support. More desks will be sent as they become available. Sincere thanks to ESS and Derek for helping make this possible. Greg Ison

Wild dog baiting program launches Council is supporting a community-based wild dog baiting program from 20 April to 24 May on participating rural properties to protect native wildlife and livestock. Green waste: I have the need … the need to weed It is important to realise that weeds and overgrowth are a natural consequence of maintaining a garden or lawn. They will always return and will always need to be managed unless they are handled strategically. However, there is no need to wage war on them with poisons or burning. When their role in your growing system is understood, then they can become a resource.

The appearance of an unwanted plant often indicates there is some deficiency or imbalance in the soil. Each weed has adapted to access nutrients that other plants cannot, drawing them up from deeper layers of the soil. Not convinced?

There are lots of videos available if you search “dynamic accumulators” online.

If you want to keep these nutrients on your property, then you must ensure all parts of the weed are unable to regrow. Many seeds can survive in ‘cool’ compost. ‘Hot’ composting is an effective option as the high temperatures destroy seeds. This method accelerates composting but does require the correct ratio of ingredients and daily turning for 12 to 18 days. Again, searching for “hot compost” will provide plenty of detailed guidance.

is to “stew” them in a black plastic bag. The sun supplies the heat needed for decomposition.

Just add some water to the bag and seal it and leave it in a warm position. The bag should be left there until it is completely “squishy” and there are no viable seeds left. The time required depends on the heat it receives, and so will vary with the season and the position.

When the liquid smells like rich, healthy soil, it is ready to use. Add it to a watering can, ready to fertilise the area where the weed originally grew.

In doing so, you return the nutrients to the soil and reduce the conditions that caused the weed to appear in the first place.

This strategy enriches your garden, reduces trips to the tip, and eventually the need to weed.

Council purchases property for conservation Noosa Council has acquired a significant 121ha property in Kin Kin, ensuring its permanent protection through funding from the Environment Levy. The land forms a crucial part of a wildlife corridor along the Cootharaba Range, linking the Woondum Plateau with the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park.

Mayor Frank Wilkie said the purchase strengthened the safeguarding of vital habitat supporting several endangered species including koalas, greater gliders and powerful owls. He noted that the landscape connects key habitat areas offering essential support for threatened wildlife.

“Securing it ensures long-term protection and creates opportunities for strategic restoration,”

Cr Wilkie said. The property contains large tracts well suited for biodiversity restoration, carbon sequestration and potential offsets for infrastructure projects such as the Beckmans Rd duplication.

The site also adjoins the Noosa Trail Network aligning with Noosa Council’s sustainable tourism objectives. The parcel borders 3 Land for Wildlife properties and includes a 530m frontage along Simpsons Rd. Initial work is already underway including the creation of fire trails, weed management and ecological assessments designed to guide long term restoration and stewardship of the property.

New shade for Eumundi Dragons On 20 March the Eumundi Dragons Rugby Union Club was visited by the Federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien. The purpose of the visit was to present the club with a new 3m x 3m pop-up marquee, which will be used as a shelter from the weather at club social events and for sports medicine personnel during home games throughout the season.

A keen rugby follower himself with a son playing junior rugby, Mr O’Brien showed genuine interest in the activities of the Eumundi Dragons. Of particular interest was the latest grant application on behalf of the Eumundi community, which

seeks funding for the installation of full-field lighting at the Eumundi Showgrounds.

So far in March Dragons players have enjoyed 2 Saturdays of pre-season development matches as preparation for the upcoming season. The main competition starts on 25 April, following the Eumundi Anzac Day services.

The club continues to welcome new players.

Thursday afternoon training is held at the Eumundi Showgrounds from 4-5.15pm, and children born between 2017 and 2021 are encouraged to join.

Kilkivan Great Horse Ride The iconic Kilkivan Great Horse Ride marks an impressive milestone in 2026, celebrating its 40th anniversary from 10-12 April. Running alongside the ride is the free Kilkivan Country Festival, featuring events such as dog high jumping, a roping demonstration, working dog demonstration, a sausage dog sprint, barrel racing, a drover’s camp oven cook-off, Cobb & Co coach rides, bush poetry, live music, a youth talent quest and street stalls.

To commemorate the anniversary, a special ride on 11 April closely follows the original route the riders took 40 years ago. Riders can camp the night before at Thornside, Widgee, before embarking on the approximately 30km journey to Kilkivan. This trail is recommended for fit horses and experienced riders, with several steep climbs and descents. A lunch stop at Kilkivan Bush Camp gives riders and horses a rest, before continuing

ESS Gardening Club

– an excellent effort from the team!

In the propagating group, students have been planting seeds for summer veggies such as zucchini and watermelon. They’ve also been saving seeds from strawflowers and cucumbers to use later in the garden.

The special projects group has been getting stuck into some big clean-ups. They’ve removed old cucumber plants and vines, pulled out a dead passionfruit vine, weeded the herb bed at the entryway and helped take garden waste to the compost piles.

The chicken care group has been making sure the chickens are well looked after by cleaning the coop, topping up food and water, and keeping the water trays clean. They’ve also helped care for baby chicks. Of course, there’s been a bit of chicken cuddling too.

It’s been so inspiring to see so many students getting involved and taking responsibility for different parts of the garden. We absolutely love having kids at the Enviro Centre and watching them grow alongside the garden!

Festival remembers Jane One very special person missed Noosa Arts Theatre’s AGM on 11 March. More than 40 years of service – as President, committee member, actor, director, stage manager, costume and lighting designer, fundraiser, play reader, backstage and front of house volunteer, judging panellist, grant seeker, Green Room mentor and sometimes even cleaner – Life Member Jane Rivers did far more than her share.

Despite battling cancer in recent years Jane was always there, welcoming people, volunteering her

experience, incredible talent, support and passion for the Noosa Arts Theatre.

She also delighted audiences with numerous performances with other theatre companies, including Miranda’s Dressing Room which Jane, Sue Clapham and Sue Sewell wrote, directed and won numerous awards at play festivals. I cherish my “guest” inclusion in some of these performances.

Jane’s final curtain fell on Christmas Eve and shocked us all. However, she lives on in our hearts, our memories and at her beloved theatre.

Next month marks the 10th annual Shorts on Stage – a 2-day festival of 10-minute plays coordinated by Jane and Sue Sewell. Jane also planned to perform but the “show must go on” with full support from her friends.

The fun includes many new scripts, performed by experienced and novice actors with several awards including 2 audience choice awards. Theatre Patron and legend David Williamson OA will select Best Director and Best Unpublished Script.

Rumour says Billy the Kidder, Annie Blokely and maybe Frankenstein are coming along with a couple who must move house but can’t take their baby.

Performances are at 2pm and 7pm on 18 April and 2pm on 19 April, followed by awards and pizza.

Eumundi artist reconnects with Country After more than 3 decades teaching art on the Sunshine Coast, Eumundi artist Lynda Page Bickley is finally devoting herself fully to the creative path she always envisioned – becoming the artist she was meant to be.

A retired art teacher who spent over 30 years inspiring students across the region, Lynda stepped away from teaching 7 years ago to focus on her own creative practice. Working across acrylic, oil and watercolour, she has since been developing a body of work that draws deeply on her personal history and her connection to place.

Recently, Lynda completed a 10-day artist residency and mentorship on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula with respected watercolour artist Michael Leeworthy, whom she has known for more than 40 years. Based at Leeworthy’s studio and gallery in Red Hill South, the residency provided an opportunity to refine her watercolour technique while immersing herself in the surrounding landscape.

The experience was supported in part by funding from a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant through SCC. “This residency gave me the space to slow down, learn deeply from another artist, and reconnect with Country that holds so much meaning for my family,” said Lynda.

Lynda’s father was a displaced Koori man from the Kulin Nation, and she was raised on Boonwurrung Country in the coastal suburb of Carrum, southeast of Melbourne. Historically known as Carrum Carrum, the area takes its name from the local language and the boomerang -shaped curve of the coastline when viewed from the beach.

Returning to the region allowed Lynda to walk, observe and paint on Country connected to her early life and family story, strengthening the cultural and emotional threads that underpin her work.

Lynda is currently working on her second submission to the Archibald Prize, painting Adam Thompson who is the lead singer of Chocolate Starfish. Alongside painting, she also works in sculpture, with one of her totem pole works held in the collection of the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.

For Lynda the future is clear. After a lifetime of creating, teaching and nurturing others’ creativity, she is now fully embracing her own – with time, purpose and a renewed connection to Country guiding the way forward.

True or False?

On 15 April 2009, newspapers across the world reported an unusual story from Russia – a fir tree had reportedly been found growing inside a man’s lung.

A 28yo man called Artyom Sidorkin had been coughing up blood and experiencing excruciating chest pain. His doctor suspected cancer after seeing what appeared to be a tumour on an X-ray.

However before removing Artyom’s lung, the surgeon performed a biopsy and was stunned to find a 5cm fir tree embedded in the lung tissue.

After the growth was carefully removed, Sidorkin made a full recovery.

The mystery of course was how could a tree take root inside a human body. Doctors worldwide were curious about how the fir tree had entered Sidorkin’s lung and how it had grown. While no one knows for sure, the best theory is that Sidorkin must have inhaled a fir seed which then sprouted and grew inside his lung. As it grew the miniature pine needles may have pierced surrounding capillaries, causing Sidorkin to cough up blood.

The medical team said they were stunned; this was the first documented case of a tree growing inside a human lung. The case also drew the attention of scientists eager to understand how such a phenomenon could occur. Rhonda Piggott
