At the heart of the celebration was Eumundi Museum, one of the few remaining community funded museums in Qld. The beautifully restored and climate controlled, museum preserves the stories of the town from pre-settlement to the present day. Much of its recent work has focused on researching and documenting the lives and achievements of Eumundi women, providing a strong foundation for the day’s celebrations.

Eumundi Museum Director Joe Hextal and Assistant Director Helen Window delivered an enlightening presentation highlighting how

Eumundi women helped shape the community, despite the significant challenges and hardships they faced. The presentation also noted how women’s stories were often difficult to trace due to limited documentation in historical records.

The presentation was followed by guest speakers from Nana’s Nest and Hoofbeats, who spoke about local initiatives supporting women in need and the positive impact these programs are having within the community.

A standout feature of the morning was the Table

of Elders, where older women nominated by community groups were honoured for their life contributions. Each elder shared a short list of personal milestones alongside a photograph taken at a time when they felt they were “kicking goals”. Displayed throughout the hall, these stories sparked reflection and connection, particularly through the personal messages shared with younger women. A relaxed morning tea provided time for attendees to mingle and share stories, reinforcing the importance of connection and dialogue in strengthening community ties. In a time marked by uncertainty and change, the gathering served as a powerful reminder of the value of shared history, the strength of community and the importance of supporting the women within it.

The event showcased not only Eumundi’s past, but also the dynamic, volunteer driven spirit that continues to shape its future.

Heart of Gold on Tour Australia’s largest regional short film festival – Gympie Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival – may not return until September 2026, but audiences won’t have to wait that long for a taste of the action. Horizon Festival 2026 marks a major milestone for the Horizon Festival, celebrating 10 years as the Sunshine Coast’s signature arts festival. Alexandr Misko Alexandr Misko – a German-based guitarist, composer and arranger – plays at Cooroy Memorial Hall on 19 June from 7.30pm. Hailed as “the future of guitar” he transforms a single acoustic guitar with lightning-fast fingerpicking, percussive tapping and masterful arrangements.

Alexandr first came to attention in 2015 when his original piece Guitar+Pen Tapping Song went viral. His YouTube channel has over 1M subscribers. Awarded Guitarist of the Year in 2018

Tougher e-mobility laws amid safety concerns Children under 16 could soon be banned from riding e-bikes and e-scooters in Qld under sweeping reforms recommended by a parliamentary inquiry into e-mobility safety. The report handed down to parliament proposes a new regulatory framework aimed at curbing dangerous riding behaviour, reducing injuries and closing legal loopholes surrounding illegal devices.

The inquiry was established in response to a sharp rise in crashes, injuries and fatalities involving personal mobility devices. Committee chair Jim McDonald described the recommendations as setting a “new national standard” for managing e-scooters and e-bikes, emphasising that changing rider culture is essential to protecting both riders and pedestrians. Last year alone, 12 people died in e-mobility related incidents in Qld, while more than 6,300 people presented to emergency departments with injuries.

Among the 28 recommendations are proposals to restrict e-bike and e-scooter use to riders aged 16 and over, require riders to hold at least a Qld Class C learner licence and reduce footpath speed limits to 10km/h. The report also calls for stronger enforcement powers, including allowing police to seize and destroy illegal devices on a first offence.

Devices capable of exceeding 25km/h would be reclassified as motorcycles or mopeds, requiring registration, insurance and appropriate licences.

Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg told parliament the government would carefully review each recommendation, pledging to introduce “nation leading laws” to improve public safety.

The reforms have been welcomed by Greg Spinda, Partner at Travis Schultz & Partners, who described the report as a “giant leap forward” for e-mobility regulation. However, he warned that from a compensation law perspective, gaps remain around insurance coverage.

“No recommendation has been made to introduce compulsory third-party insurance for compliant devices. The report recommends that non-compliant devices – such as high-powered or modified scooters – be registered and insured, while compliant, speed-limited devices could still operate in public areas without any compulsory insurance.”

Mr Spinda cautioned this could leave injured pedestrians or riders with limited avenues for compensation, noting that even low speed collisions can cause serious harm. Despite these concerns, he said the report provided a practical roadmap for reform and urged swift implementation to prevent further injuries and deaths.

Lake Macdonald Dam demolition works rescheduled Work on the Lake Macdonald Dam Improvement Project is set to intensify as the project enters a critical new phase. A construction notice has confirmed that demolition of the existing spillway and embankments will soon begin to allow for new infrastructure.

Seqwater has nearly completed construction of a temporary cofferdam, which will enable crews to safely commence phase 2 of the project.

Demolition was expected to start on 16 March, however due to recent and ongoing rainfall since 6 March, this has resulted in inflows to the dam, causing the dam level to rise and spill excess water downstream. As a result, additional time is required to prepare the site, which includes lowering the lake.

“Recent rainfall has resulted in increased inflows to Lake Macdonald. Additional time is required to prepare the site, including lowering the lake to 39% and removing the water in the area between the cofferdam and existing dam wall,” the construction team stated.

The demolition works involve continuous 24-hour operations for around 15 days. With the Easter period approaching, the decision was made to postpone the works to minimise disruption to the community. Demolition is now expected to begin mid to late April, subject to weather conditions.

Once demolition is complete, construction of the new dam will begin, featuring a modern split level spillway designed to safely manage extreme flood events. The upgrade will enhance long term safety, water security and regional resilience.

The total approved cost for the dam safety and water security project is $427.7M funded through Seqwater’s capital works program. Work started in late 2024 and is expected to finish in about late 2029, subject to weather and site conditions.

Noosa Women’s Shed

Biosphere Awards open Nominations are now open for the Sunshine Coast Biosphere Awards, inviting individuals, businesses and community groups to be recognised for driving positive change across the region.

The annual awards celebrate those helping to create a more sustainable future within the Sunshine Coast Biosphere, which was internationally recognised by UNESCO in 2022. Self-nominations are welcome, as are nominations on behalf of others.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the awards shine a light on the people and projects making a real difference. “People are at the heart of our Sunshine Coast Biosphere. These awards showcase our leaders, innovators, educators and community movements, inspiring others to take action.”

Ever wondered what a Women’s Shed actually does? I volunteer for the Noosa Women’s Shed at their monthly Bunnings barbecue fundraisers and we often get asked that question.

The vision of the Noosa Women’s Shed is to empower women to use tool-based skills for their continuing growth and independence. The “Shed” brings women together through a mix of workshops and social events.

The Noosa Women’s Shed is still settling into its new 3-bay shed at Noosa Springs. Electricity is connected, water is coming and sewerage is the next goal. Amidst a continued focus on fundraising, workshops are getting off the ground and there is plenty going on.

A recent series of workshops focused on restoring old chairs sourced through Marketplace. The idea was to fix them and sell them to help with fundraising. Eleven dining room chairs were found that definitely had seen better days. Some had been in a flood, some were rickety and all were well past their prime. Made of solid timber, they offered the promise of a second life.

Eight women got together and stripped back the paint only to find varnish underneath. After more stripping, much sanding, cleaning and patience, the base wood was revealed. Then it was a case of pulling the chairs apart, glueing and re-screwing the joins and clamping the frames to ensure the chairs no longer wobbled. The chairs’ cushions were mouldy so off they came to be re-upholstered. We removed the sagging leather stripping underneath the cushions and cut base boards for each cushion. We discovered that one of the women’s parents had been upholsterers and she had absorbed more than she thought of their tips and lessons. We all listened and learned.

Guiding us through the process was Sasha, who ran a Mrs Fixit home maintenance business. Her approach was that everyone should have a go, and we would all learn from one another. While

I didn’t personally find her advice that “sanding was quite relaxing and almost zen” rang very true, there was no doubt that the whole process of restoring the chairs was fascinating. The final products were pretty good – if we say so ourselves – and we did sell them. Rhonda Piggott

TRAVEL

Travel insurance and war Military conflict in the Middle East has caused widespread airspace closures, flight cancellations and other travel disruptions both in the region and worldwide. This has raised questions about whether travel insurance provides cover in the event of war.

Most travel insurance policies do not cover war or acts of hostility whether war is formally declared or not. Travel insurers specify this in the general exclusions section of their Product Disclosure Statement. It is generally stated as: “We will not pay for claims arising as a result of war, invasion, act of foreign enemy, hostilities – whether war be declared or not – civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection or military or usurped power.”

Travel insurance will also generally not cover claims arising from you travelling to a country that has a “Do Not Travel” warning on the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website (smartraveller.gov.au). You should also avoid nonessential travel to countries with a “Reconsider your need to travel” advisory and check with your insurer whether cover applies before making plans.

Will airlines assist if your travel is interrupted by military conflict and you are stranded, or if your

trip is imminent? It’s best not to cancel your flight until you get advice from your airline. You are more likely to get your money back if the airline cancels your flight, rather than if you choose not to fly.

If your travel is disrupted by military conflict, Choice Magazine recommends that you should still lodge a claim with your travel insurer. Choice advised that if you become stranded due to a cancelled flight, tell your insurer your flight was cancelled due to “airspace closure” – i.e. don’t mention the war – and let the insurer decide if your claim will be covered. Even if broader claims are declined, you may still be eligible for emergency assistance, such as help coordinating medical care, accessing prescription medications, or reporting an incident you want to claim for.

The Sing Thing Choir For people living with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions, maintaining clear speech, a strong voice and safe swallowing can be an ongoing challenge. The Sing Thing Choir offers a supportive and uplifting space where these challenges are met with evidence-based therapy, music and meaningful social connection.

Meeting every Monday at 1pm at Tinbeerwah Hall, The Sing Thing is a welcoming group open not only to individuals with Parkinson’s or other neurological conditions, but also to their family members and carers. Each 2.5-hour session combines therapeutic voice work with the joy of singing and the warmth of shared community.

At the heart of The Sing Thing is a strong foundation in evidence-based practice. Many of the speech and voice activities are guided by the principles of the internationally recognised Parkinson Voice Project – SPEAK OUT!® program.

This approach is designed to help people with Parkinson’s regain and retain their speech, voice and safe swallowing abilities, supporting everyday communication and quality of life.

Each session is carefully structured and led

by Speech Pathologist Edwina Kruizinga, who facilitates voice, speech and swallowstrengthening exercises tailored to participants’ needs. These therapeutic activities are complemented by group singing with talented musician Dave Hart, using music to boost breath control, confidence and mood. Sessions also include afternoon tea, allowing time for relaxed conversation and the strengthening of social bonds within the group.

Beyond the physical benefits, participants frequently report improvements in motivation, emotional wellbeing and social connection.

“Parkinson’s affects each individual differently, |with varying levels of severity. Participants of The Sing Thing have reported significant improvements in both communication and swallowing. The group also provides a strong support network, where members help one another navigate the challenges of living with Parkinson’s. There is a wonderful sense of camaraderie, and many have expressed an increased sense of wellbeing because of these connections made through our choir,” said Edwina.

NAYILS All-Abilities Martial Arts Nambour Adult Youth Independent Lifestyle Support (NAYILS) offers an inclusive allabilities martial arts program in Nambour that is designed to support people living with disability in a safe, respectful and encouraging environment. The program forms part of NAYILS’ broader commitment to creating life enhancing opportunities that promote independence, confidence and community connection.

The all-abilities martial arts and self-defence classes are tailored to meet individual needs and abilities. Sessions focus on developing physical coordination, personal confidence and self respect, while also encouraging students to challenge themselves at their own pace. Students recently participated in a grading session, where many students demonstrated their acquired skills and were assessed as to whether they were ready to advance to the next rank. Upon passing the students are awarded a new belt colour and a certificate of achievement.

What’s new in first aid: button batteries First aid advice evolves and it can be hard to stay up to date with important changes. If you are a parent, grandparent or carer of young children, there is one issue in particular to be aware of – button batteries.

Button batteries – tiny but incredibly dangerous Button batteries are the small, coin-shaped batteries found in TV remotes, hearing aids, car keys, musical greeting cards, watches, toys, lightup shoes and even flameless candles. Because they’re shiny and small, they are very attractive to young children who love putting things in their mouths.

If swallowed or inserted into the nose or ear, a button battery can cause severe internal burns in as little as 2 hours. This is not due to battery leakage, but an electrical reaction that causes rapid tissue damage. Around 20 children are admitted to hospital in Australia each week with suspected button battery ingestion, and tragically these injuries can be life-threatening.

Prevention is key Buy safe products where battery compartments are secured with screws. Keep spare batteries locked away and out of sight, regularly check toys and household devices, and dispose of used batteries immediately and safely.

If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery do not wait for symptoms.

New first aid advice Immediately call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26. They will advise what to do next and which hospital you should attend so your child receives urgent medical care.

Current Australian first aid guidelines also recommend giving 2 teaspoons (10mL) of honey every 10 minutes, up to 6 doses, for children over 12 months of age, while travelling to hospital.

For children under 12 months, give jam in the same amount and timing (as honey is not safe for infants). This thick substance may help coat the oesophagus and slow the injury process – but it must never delay urgent medical care. You should not induce vomiting.

Awareness and prevention remain the best way to protect our children and grandchildren. If you suspect a child may have swallowed a button battery – call Poisons Information immediately.

It’s hard to believe Easter is almost upon us – where has the first part of the year gone? As we approach the holidays Eumundi Police will once again be focusing heavily on road safety.

Historically the Easter period is associated with an increase in serious traffic crashes. While police enforcement plays an important role in reducing these incidents, driver behaviour remains the single biggest factor in keeping our roads safe. I encourage all drivers to allow extra time to get to places, make good decisions prior to driving and remind themselves of the ‘Fatal Five’: speeding, drink or drug driving, fatigue, distraction and failing to wear a seat belt.

Following on from the previous Police Beat article regarding the break and enter offences at the Eumundi Square Market, an 18yo man linked to the Kin Kin and Noosaville area has since been charged. A collaborative effort between Eumundi Police, Noosa Police and detectives from the Noosa Heads Criminal Investigation Branch led to his arrest. The man was held in custody overnight and appeared before Maroochydore Court the following day, where he pleaded guilty and was released on probation. Unfortunately he has since been charged with further similar offences in the Noosa area, which are alleged to have occurred after his sentencing.

Operation Federal 2 was conducted on 18 February on the southbound lanes of the Bruce Highway at Federal. Although the location falls within the Pomona Police Division, the operation was planned by Eumundi Police, with assistance

from Qld Transport Officers and officers from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. The 4-hour operation between 6pm and 10pm focused on road safety and resulted in 912 random breath tests being conducted. During the operation, police detected 4 drink drivers, 8 drug drivers, and 2 unlicensed drivers. Five traffic infringement notices were issued, along with 7 defect notices issued by Qld Transport Officers. The number of impaired drivers detected is quite concerning, and highlights the ongoing risk posed to all road users.

Throughout February Eumundi Police attended a total of 127 calls for service. Thankfully there were no major incidents during the month, with the majority of calls relating to domestic violence matters, mental health-related crises and welfare checks. On a personal note, I was able to take 2 weeks of leave towards the end of February, which provided a welcome opportunity to rest and recharge. I would like to sincerely thank Snr Constable Dave Solonec for stepping up and taking charge during this period.

Last drinks at Terella Locals and visitors gathered in droves over the weekend of 14&15 March to farewell the iconic rural Terella Brewing Co, raising a glass one last time at the much-loved venue.

In a fitting send-off the brewery chose to celebrate Easter early, continuing a tradition that has become a highlight for families in the community.

For several years, children have raced across the paddocks in search of Easter eggs, chocolate and a touch of magic – moments that have helped cement Terella’s place in the hearts of many.

“It’s been one of our favourite traditions with this community,” the brewery shared.

For those who have visited before, the farewell weekend was a chance to relive what made the venue so special. For those who hadn’t, it was the last opportunity to experience the atmosphere, the community spirit and the memories that defined Terella.

17 years of serving the Eumundi community with outstanding food and genuine hospitality. Their dedication has made Sala Thai a much loved local institution, and the anniversary was a fitting tribute to the strong community connections they have built over the years.

Farewell Steven’s St Gallery After 5 years at the heart of Yandina’s creative life, Stevens Street Gallery closed its doors at the end of February, marking the end of a much-loved

chapter for the local arts community.

The gallery began as an unplanned venture, taken on to prevent the loss of a cherished local space. What was intended as a 1-year experiment quickly grew into a thriving hub for artists, makers and visitors drawn to its warmth, inclusivity and sense of belonging. Over the years Stevens Street Gallery became known not just for the quality of its exhibitions, but for the conversations, connections and community it fostered.

Dedicated to supporting local artists, the gallery championed a sustainable, independent model – operating without government grants or volunteers and remaining committed to fair, values-led representation. Rising rents and increasing pressures on small, independent businesses ultimately made continuation impossible.

While the physical space is closing, the gallery’s journey is far from over, with plans now underway for pop-up exhibitions, art fairs and collaborations in new and unexpected spaces.

Eumundi Swim Club celebrates strong results Eumundi Swim Club enjoyed a successful outing at the recent Wide Bay Long Course Championships, with 9 athletes representing the club and delivering impressive performances across the meet.

Despite being a relatively new team training out of the Eumundi Aquatic Centre, the swimmers rose to the challenge, qualifying for multiple finals and achieving numerous personal bests.

The results reflect the rapid progress and growing confidence of the squad in a short period of time.

A standout performance came from 12yo Alba Barnes, who claimed gold in the 50m freestyle and set a new record in the event. Alba’s achievement marks an exciting milestone as she prepares to compete at her first Australian Age Group Championships in April on the Gold Coast.

She will be joined at the national event by fellow Eumundi swimmers Chloe Maxwell, Nathan Maxwell and Emma Chantry.

Aqua aerobics instructors The Eumundi aqua aerobics group recently farewelled instructor Wendy. Deb, Natasha and Glen continue to run the hour-long classes that run 5 days each week at Eumundi. Each class regularly attracts around 20 participants and is very popular.

Aqua aerobics instructors are in high demand and managing rosters can be a challenge for BlueFit, the company responsible for many SCC pools. BlueFit is currently seeking a casual relief instructor to join the team. This paid role may involve working across one or more pool locations.

Applicants must hold an aqua fitness qualification, current first aid and CPR certification, an ABN and public liability insurance. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact Amy at BlueFit on 0450 399 919.

Eumundi Dragons visited by rugby star A few of weeks ago, parents and supporters of the Eumundi Dragons Rugby Union Club were honoured to welcome one of Qld Rugby’s rising stars to their major recruitment day – Qld Reds player Louis Werchon.

Louis, who plays in the key position of scrumhalf has been showcasing his class in the highly competitive Super Rugby competition. Born in Nambour, raised on the Sunshine Coast and schooled at Sunshine Coast Grammar School, Louis was able to relate to players, parents and supporters in attendance.

All parents have to do is bring their children to training at the Eumundi Showgrounds any Thursday afternoon from 4-5pm. Doug said, “We’ll let them have a run with what will hopefully be their new teammates.”

Eumundi Magpies celebrate a standout futsal season The Eumundi Magpies Futsal Club marked the end of the 2025–2026 season with an end of season breakout party, bringing together players, families and supporters to celebrate another successful year of indoor soccer.

The afternoon featured the presentation of trophies and special awards, recognising individual effort, improvement and outstanding team spirit across the club. Families and players enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, sharing food and the traditional club cakes.

The club also extended heartfelt thanks to the Eumundi Rotary Club for their ongoing support since the club’s beginnings, particularly for their assistance with trophies and awards.

Residents and visitors can now enjoy easier access to sports and recreation, thanks to the installation of new SportsBox lockers at locations across Noosa.

SportsBox is a Qld Government–supported initiative that allows people to borrow sports equipment for free using a simple mobile app.

After downloading the SportsBox app users can unlock the locker, select the equipment they need and enjoy a game at the park. Once finished the gear is returned to the locker using the app to open the door.

The lockers are stocked with a range of equipment tailored to the facilities available at the park. Depending on the courts, users may be able to borrow gear for sports such as table tennis, basketball, volleyball, pickleball or netball – making it easy to try a new activity without owning the equipment.

Delivered by People Being Active Pty Ltd (PBA) and funded through the ActiveKIT Super Round, the SportsBox program aims to remove common barriers to physical activity. By providing free, convenient access to equipment, the initiative encourages more Queenslanders to get active and make the most of their local community spaces.

The SportsBox program is expected to reach more than 10,000 participants across Qld, with over 20 lockers planned for locations including Mackay and Noosa. The installation is part of a broader rollout, supporting families, young people and visitors – particularly during school holidays— who want to enjoy active recreation together.

Locations include: Stan Topper Park, Pomona; Quamby Place Tennis & Pickleball Courts, Noosaville; and Munna Park basketball court, Noosa Heads.

Kemabolo Village Project: a basic healthcare initiative Kemabolo is a village located around 95km south-east of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Like many villages in the region, it has long struggled with limited infrastructure and access to essential services such as education and health care. At one point, even the local school was forced to close due to its poor condition, leaving

children with the choice of walking for hours to the nearest school, or missing out on education altogether.

Change began through the dedication of a Pomona couple, Rocky and Kilagi Nielson. Kilagi who was born and raised in Kemabolo was determined to make a difference. Through their efforts the school was rebuilt and now proudly educates more than 500 students, giving local children renewed opportunities for learning and a brighter future.

While education has taken a significant step forward, access to health care in Kemabolo remains virtually non-existent. The absence of basic medical services and reliable transport has led to preventable illness and tragically, the regular loss of life.

To address this urgent need, Eumundi Rotary are working in partnership with Rocky and Kilagi, along with the Kemabolo village council to establish a functioning Aid Post. The plan includes staffing the Aid Post with a qualified nurse and local health workers, with services covering maternity care, general triage and – following additional training – limited diagnostic capabilities.

To support this important initiative Eumundi Rotary is holding a MuMu – the traditional Papua New Guinean earth-oven feast – on 18 April from 12.30pm. The event will be held at the home of Anthony and Anne Everingham on Seib Rd, who have generously offered their beautiful property for the occasion.

Guests will also be treated to PNG dancers and a nostalgic “Back to PNG theme”. The event is open to everyone who would like to support the project, with a special welcome extended to exPNG residents and Papua New Guinean nationals living in the area.

Reflections on a life changing experience Earlier this year Quinn Kruizinga attended the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) – an intensive residential program designed for Australian students with a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a recent guest speaker at the Eumundi Rotary Club, Quinn thanked the club for sponsoring her participation and shared reflections on an experience that proved both inspiring and life changing.

NYSF brings together high achieving secondary school students from across the country, offering them the opportunity to engage with science beyond the classroom. Hosted at the University of Qld, the 2 week program immersed participants in a fast paced environment filled with lectures, laboratory work and collaborative activities. For Quinn, the experience felt like stepping into a whole new world – one defined by curiosity, challenge and a strong sense of community.

A defining aspect of the program was the people.

Quinn highlighted the importance of peer support, particularly the role of her assigned buddy, who helped her navigate the demanding schedule and stay motivated throughout the program. This support system not only made the experience more manageable but also reinforced the value of teamwork and encouragement in high pressure learning environments such as NYSF. The days at NYSF were filled with lectures delivered by scientists, researchers, engineers and other professionals actively shaping the future of their fields. These sessions exposed students to real world applications of science and demonstrated how scientific knowledge

continues to evolve beyond textbooks. “Hearing directly from experts was highly motivating and helped bring STEM subjects to life,” said Quinn.

Hands on laboratory sessions were another highlight of the program. Students conducted experiments themselves, including testing the effectiveness of sunscreen against UV radiation.

These practical activities allowed participants to apply theory in a tangible way and rediscover the excitement of learning through experimentation and discovery.

Beyond academics, NYSF also placed a strong emphasis on social connection and personal growth. Evening activities ranged from a campus wide scavenger hunt to disco and concert nights.

These events helped students relax after long days, build friendships and develop confidence.

The concert night, showcased the diverse talents of participants, highlighting that NYSF students are not only future scientists and engineers, but also creative and expressive individuals.

Throughout the program, Quinn remained keenly aware that her opportunity to attend NYSF was made possible through the generous support of the Eumundi Rotary Club. “Throughout the entire program, I kept thinking about how lucky I was to be there – and how that luck was directly connected to the support of your Rotary Club.

Reflecting on the experience, Quinn noted that NYSF strengthened her confidence, clarified her interests and inspired her future aspirations. The program demonstrated what can be achieved when young people are supported, challenged and encouraged to explore their potential. She expressed deep gratitude to the Rotary Club and hopes to one day give back by supporting other students in the same way she was supported.

Enviro Days: A big, bunya-filled start to the year Enviro Days at Eumundi State School have contributed to an awesome start to the year, helped along by a bumper crop of bunya nuts in our local area. Students have been busy cooking with Miss Nat, experimenting with nutritious native bush food.

So far, classes have created bliss balls and fried bunya nuts with more exciting recipes on the way. Future cooking sessions will see bunya nuts paired with a broader range of native ingredients,

continuing to build students’ understanding of local food sources and sustainable practices Bunya nuts harvested from the bunya pine, have been an important food source for First Nations Peoples for thousands of years, particularly during large seasonal gatherings. Our Yr3 students have been learning about these traditional bunya gatherings, and why they were so important both culturally and socially. They also enjoyed a handson activity, shucking bunya cones and estimating how many nuts might be inside. One small cone weighing just 3kg contained a whopping 70 bunya nuts!

Meanwhile, Yr2 students took part in Find a Frog in February. They learned to identify 3 local frog species by their calls and physical features, explored what helps and harms frogs, and discovered why frogs are important indicator species for healthy ecosystems. They also learned some frog yoga moves from Chappy Sam! Enviro Days have provided a fantastic start to the year, with hands-on learning, local knowledge and connecting with the environment. A big thank you also to the wonderful parent volunteers who have come along to help out – you are much appreciated!

Goodstart Eumundi’s Acknowledgement of Country

At Goodstart Eumundi, we sing our Acknowledgment of Country each day. Recently we took time to reflect on whether it still represented who we are today. Our previous acknowledgement had been part of our community for many years, but as our children, staff and families changed our commitment to reconciliation has strengthened and grown. We felt it was time to create something that reflected our present journey.

We wanted our new acknowledgement to feel meaningful, fun and truly embedded in children’s

everyday experiences. So, together we created a song sung to the familiar tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, a melody our children already know and love.

Each morning, our children proudly sing: Wunya, Wunya here we play, On Gubbi Gubbi land today.

Thank you Elders, new and past, For sharing wisdom that will last.

Through this song we pay our respects to the Gubbi Gubbi Peoples the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and play. The word “Wunya” means welcome, a beautiful word that sets the tone for our day and reflects the inclusive community we have built.

Most importantly, the song speaks to responsibility. When our children sing, “We will care for land and sea, strong together you and me,” they are expressing a promise, that reconciliation is something we actively practise through care, respect and being together.

One of the most heartwarming outcomes has been hearing from families that this learning is travelling beyond our centre. Some parents have shared that their children now sing the song at home. It’s wonderful that these small voices carry messages of welcome and respect into their wider community.

ENVIRONMENT Plant city takes over the gardens If the Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens don’t find new homes for their thriving collection of plants on 28 March, they may just take over the place.

From 7am-noon the gardens will host their muchanticipated Autumn Plant Sale, offering a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants lovingly grown by the Friends’ volunteer team. Whether

you’re refreshing an established garden, starting from scratch, or adding a touch of greenery to your home, there will be something to suit every gardener.

With plants in high demand, the sale operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so early arrivals will have the best chance to snap up some bargains.

The sale will be held at the Friends’ Propagation Shed on Lake Macdonald Dr, around 4km from Cooroy’s town centre.

Every dollar raised goes directly back into supporting Noosa Botanic Gardens. Spanning 8 lush hectares, the gardens showcase an impressive collection of locally grown and exotic plant species, making a post-purchase stroll well worth the time.

Free Repair Days The Noosa Men’s Shed has teamed up with Reviva Reuse Shop to offer free repair days on 26 March, 23 April, 28 May and 25 June from 10am-2pm.

Take your broken treasures along and see if they can be fixed. It could be a wobbly chair or other small furniture items, a broken bicycle, clothing repairs, tools that need sharpening or general repair. Pomona Gallery’s anniversary On 24 March the Pomona Railway Station Gallery marks its 25th anniversary – a milestone that reflects the vision, resilience and community spirit of the Noosa Hinterland.

Its genesis began in 1995 when a small group of locals formed the Pomona Progress Art and Tourism Assn to support the arts in the Noosa Hinterland. Their goal was to open an art gallery in Pomona. In 1997, the Pomona Chamber of Commerce suggested to Qld Rail that it donate the old railway station buildings to the community. The railway station had closed in 1991 and Qld Rail was looking for a buyer. Noosa Council agreed to provide suitable land and the railway buildings were relocated to their current site in April 2000. The rest as they say is history.

Less than a year later the Pomona Railway Station Gallery opened its doors and remains one of only 5 community galleries in Qld. The building itself is owned by the Noosa Council, but the fact that the gallery has remained open for 25 years is testament to the dedication of volunteers. It is primarily self-funded and receives funds from the monthly Pomona Markets to help with operational expenses along with grants from government and business. Pomona Gallery President Ron Collins said, “Over the past year the gallery welcomed more than 10,000 visitors and generated $65,000 for members of the local arts community.”

The gallery plays a significant part in preserving Pomona’s character and enhancing community connections. Rhonda Piggott 30
