“We listed with Heidi because she seemed practical, super easy to deal with and professional. She was all of that and more. Heidi takes the stress away! It’s such a big deal selling your home and Heidi just sorts everything, easily and quickly. She even brought my washing in before an open home when I’d forgotten to do it! Her communication is thorough and prompt - we never had to chase her up about anything. Honestly, if we were to sell again we wouldn’t even look around, we’d choose Heidi as our agent. We’ve bought and sold many houses in our years and I would go as far as to say Heidi is the best agent we’ve ever had. She knows the area well - oh and she got us a good price too. We highly recommend her.”

COMMUNITY

Big-hearted volunteers

To mark National Volunteers Week in May, Katie Rose Cottage Hospice hosted a special thank you event to celebrate the incredible contribution of its 200+ volunteers and enable them to come together to meet and mingle.

CEO Rebecca Grisman said, “Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do, and this event is a small way to recognise their dedication, compassion, and countless hours of service to our hospice and the local community.”

The hospice relies on community support and donations, as well as its volunteer army. The thank you event was supported by grant funding from Sunshine Coast Airport. As an organisation providing a community service at no charge, Katie Rose relies heavily on donations and grant funding, and the support from Sunshine Coast Airport provided a chance to give back a little to the organisation’s volunteers.

Volunteers are integral to the operation and spirit of Katie Rose Cottage Hospice, generously providing their time and care by working at the hospice to support our palliative care nurses and patients, providing retail support in the 4 opshops, maintaining the hospice’s lush gardens, or collecting donation boxes in businesses across the coast.

Each volunteer brings compassion, commitment, and a spirit of teamwork to ensuring the hospice can continue to operate. Katie Rose Cottage Hospice receives just 25% of its funding from the Qld government for its specialist palliative care nurses’ wages, and must fundraise year-round to cover the $300,000 shortfall for its operations every year.

The hospice is currently planning fundraising

events and seeking more helping hands keen to support our nurses and op-shop stores. If you are interested in volunteering at Katie Rose Cottage Hospice contact: volunteering@ katierosecottage.org.au.

Eumundi Chamber celebrates 30 years of growth and success

The Eumundi Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated a significant milestone at its Annual General Meeting on 27 May, marking 30 years of incorporation. Over the past 3 decades, the chamber has shown unwavering commitment to the growth and development of Eumundi and its surrounding centres of commerce.

The event held at Alfresco’s Garden Café, featured the annual report delivered by Eumundi Chamber President Cindy Suters, who highlighted the chamber's achievements. "The past year has been marked by significant growth, connection and opportunity, as the chamber has championed local businesses, welcomed visitors, and provided immense value to its members," said Cindy.

“The chamber has focused its efforts on supporting meaningful projects, fostering strong partnerships, and connecting with industry leaders and government partners. These initiatives have contributed to the region's continued growth and success, shaping a bright future for the community.”

Membership has not only grown by 24% this year to 85 members but also diversified with notable increases in health and wellbeing, clean

technologies, and food and agribusiness. The chamber has expanded its reach to connect with over 200 representatives of local businesses, community organisations, government and industry groups. The chamber’s event calendar was also busier than ever with 10 events held throughout the year.

To recognise the contributions of its members, the chamber has introduced a Member of the Year Award – to honour a member who has gone above and beyond for the association. This year's recipient was Laguna Pest Control, with the award presented to the excited owners Jay and Nicky Turner on the evening.

Cindy also acknowledged the chamber's ongoing partnership with Experience Eumundi, which has contributed to a strengthened visitor economy, opening new opportunities for its members in tourism and retail. Collaborative campaigns such as the Buy Local Campaign and the Eumundi Map have also assisted with raising the region's profile and driving support for local businesses.

Cindy expressed her gratitude to the community organisations that have supported the chamber, including the Eumundi & District Community Assn (EDCA), Eumundi Historical Assn (EHA), the Rotary Club of Eumundi and Eumundi Voice. She also thanked the selfless volunteers, participants, sponsors and contributors to the programs and projects delivered this year.

The Play Must Go On

What is a play festival or even a writing competition without some hiccoughs?

During rehearsals, Noosa Arts Theatre’s One Act Playwriting festival committee found out that Benign Departures – one of the finalist scripts –had been previously performed, breaking the guidelines.

The committee decided to continue the play’s performance without prize money eligibility, however the actors and the director remained eligible for awards. The 4th play received the prize money, and it will be performed at a later date.

ARCHITECTURE

Local winners shine in architecture awards

The Sunshine Coast has once again demonstrated its architectural prowess, with local projects taking top honours at the Australian Institute of Architects Sunshine Coast Regional Awards. Matso’s Sunshine Coast Brewery has been awarded the prestigious Gabriel Poole Building of the Year. This accolade recognises the exceptional transformation of the heritage-listed Joe’s Waterhole into Matso’s Eumundi Brewery.

Designed by Five Mile Radius and Knight Wilson Architects, the project blends historic charm with sustainable design, creating a vibrant and inclusive venue that echoes the values of its community.

Another standout project is Lyrebird – a beach house at Peregian Beach – which was named the Sunshine Coast Regional Project of the Year. Designed by Sparks Architects – owned by Eumundi locals Dan and Margo Sparks – this climate-responsive home accommodates the needs of a growing family and their dogs. The design features floor-to-ceiling glass, allowing natural light and airflow while offering expansive views of the beaches and gardens.

The awards also recognised other notable projects: House of the Year – Cooroy House by Henry Bennett and Dan Wilson. Commendation – Mapleton House by Atelier Chen Hung (Residential – Houses, New). These projects, including several featured in the Sunshine Coast Open House program, showcase the region's commitment to innovative and sustainable design. Visit: t.ly/hLyR3.

EUMUNDI ROTARY CLUB

Vinnies Sleepout

The Rotary Club of Eumundi has proudly sponsored Les Pontin – a dedicated and longterm member of the Rotary Club Caloundra Pacific – who will be participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout for the third time. The sleepout is scheduled for 19 June at the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club and aims to raise awareness and funds for homelessness.

Official data reveals that at least 122,000 Australians are homeless, including over 1,200 individuals on the Sunshine Coast. However, the actual number is likely much higher. Funds raised from the Sunshine Coast event will remain in the region, directly supporting those experiencing or at risk of homelessness locally.

President of Vinnies Sunshine Coast Beryl Rowan said, “The rising cost of living and a critical shortage of affordable housing as significant contributors to the increasing strain on households. Sea of Hearts

At Goodstart Early Learning Centre Eumundi, Reconciliation Week is a meaningful time for reflection, learning and connection. This year we proudly participated in the Sea of Hearts initiative – a creative expression of our community’s commitment to reconciliation. If you’re driving through town, you may have noticed the beautiful, crafted hearts hung out the front of our Goodstart Eumundi Centre. Children, educators, families, Eumundi State School students and community members were all invited to decorate cardboard hearts in their own way, contributing to a heartfelt display. Each heart represents a voice, some included thoughtful words about reconciliation, while others were decorated with colours, symbols and artwork. Together they formed a sea of hearts, symbolising unity and our shared journey towards a more inclusive and respectful future. This initiative is part of our broader commitment outlined in our Reconciliation Action Plan which supports children in connecting to Country through observing, exploring, and caring for our natural world.

Projects like this help deepen those connections and encourage ongoing conversations about culture, respect and history. Our Sea of Hearts display is more than just art, it’s a public and visual commitment to reconciliation, truthtelling and walking forward together, from now to next. Cherie Dutra

WEATHER

Notice the weather

What is the difference between weather and climate? Weather refers to the short-term conditions of the atmosphere – the specific weather conditions being experienced at one moment in time – while climate refers to the average weather patterns and conditions of a place over an extended period of time.

We are now aware Earth’s climate pattern is not fixed but has changed significantly throughout geological history and is once again changing. The debate is whether climate change is caused by human activities, cosmic forces due to our movement through the galaxy – and the responses of our sun to that – or a combination of both.

This sets a new debate in motion. Can and/or should we reduce some of the human behaviours that are being blamed for changing the climate? Or should we just accept the change and do nothing? The one thing that our geologists and archaeologists do not deny, is that our planet has never carried such a large population in large cities, predominantly along our coastlines. Nor has it ever faced such shifts, with so many of Earth’s eco-systems removed or reduced. So, what do we do?

Perhaps now is the time to learn and adapt to

our depleted resources. We can achieve this by regenerating ecosystems, securing our homes against fire and flood, finding species of plants that will cope with the predicted changes and plant them locally, and ensuring our food security by having access to acclimatised staples-starches, greens, root crops, fruits, herbs, fungi and small animal systems. We can ensure the provision of clean water and make sure our waste is turned into inputs for the system so there is little, or no pollution. Severe weather events can impact transport, so forget the outof-season produce for a while and learn how to take advantage of what can be produced locally. In the process you will find that it is hard to do it alone.

In fact, Bill Mollison – a founder of permaculture – stated “that self-sufficiency was a goal, not a reality, and that by trying to be totally selfsufficient you would have to mine your land.” This means you would need to ask it to produce a harvest that the soil type and/or miro-climate could not sustain. Therefore, he told us to go back to community. Share knowledge and plant materials, form cooperatives to start productive systems, join a Local Energy Transfer System (LETS) group or a non-monetary swapping of goods and services. To be secure Mollison said, “You must be able to look out your window and see food and people who will cooperate with you. Otherwise, you are in a precarious situation.” Perhaps finding community is the first step, and together we will find out the rest. There are many local groups that meet to share a specific aspect of our town, history, community, or recreation such as sports, arts, and literature. Shared interests grow relationships, friendships,

trust and respect. These groups can be found on social media with regular new gathering opportunities being offered, while others are advertised in Eumundi Voice. Neighbourhood gatherings are another way to get to know the locals. The community gardens in Eumundi and Cooroy have access to planting materials. There is much to be done and plenty of human and biological resources available locally. We are fortunate to have people in our district who have been working on this for over 40 years and are happy to help. Janet Millington

SPORT

Everyone has a Mini story!

The Noosa Hill climb isn’t just an important event on the motor sport calendar, but part of a much wider challenge. The Inter Club Challenge (ICC) is made up of members of several motoring clubs in SEQ who participate in a range of events throughout the year from hill climbs, Motorkhana, Autocross, Show & Shine, to street navigation runs.

Chairman of the ICC Christine Murphy has once again entered in the Noosa Winter Hill Climb. Originally driving a Mini Cooper called Eddie, this year she is driving a later model Mini Cooper

S which is supercharged – called Patsy! Followers of the British TV series Absolutely Fabulous will understand the names. The new car is lighter, smaller, supercharged, manual and feels natural on the track. Christine is aiming for some better times up “The Hill”.

Christine and her fellow club members like to compete in the Noosa event because you rub shoulders with invited legends such as Fabian Coultard and other grassroot racers. Christine said, “All levels of experience are welcome, and the sportsmanship shown by all is brilliant. Whether you have finished your run and are waiting at the top of the hill, in the pits preparing for your next run, or tweaking your car there is always someone asking how your day is going and wanting to hear your story and share theirs.”

Everyone has a Mini story – especially the classics – whether it was a beloved family car or a rally-prepared giant slayer. Come along to the Noosa Winter Hill climb and catch up with the Mini crowd in the pits on the weekend of 14-15 June.

Statue of Liberty

On 17 June 1885 the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York – a gift from France to the US to commemorate the centenary of US independence and the abolition of slavery. The statue reflected the friendship between France and the US, particularly after French support for the Union during the American Civil War. Its official name is Liberty Enlightening the World. The statue was built in France between 1875 and 1884 and shipped to the US in pieces. Gustave Eiffel – of Eiffel Tower fame – designed the internal steel framework. The statue was reassembled on Liberty Island in 1886 and dedicated by US President Grover Cleveland. Originally a shiny brown colour, by 1906 it had turned green due to the outer surface being covered with hundreds of thin copper sheets. It has been left that way due to concerns that cleaning would eventually lead to the entire copper covering being eaten away.

The Statue of Liberty is 93m high, and despite being made of concrete can sway up to 7.6cm in the wind. It is struck by lightning up to 600 times a year. Today, the statue is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visited by over 4M tourists annually.
