Loy Krathong Festival Eumundi delighted to the sounds and sights of the local Thai community’s Loy Krathong Festival last Sunday. Despite the cancellation due to the overnight storm damage and power outage in Eumundi and surrounds, visitors from the Gold

Coast and Toowoomba joined the Sunshine Coast locals in the shortened parade, dancing, singing and floating banana boats. Krathong refers to a piece of banana trunk decorated with flowers, banana leaves, candles and incense sticks, and loy means to float. Floating the krathong is a reminder of the strong link Thai people have with the rivers of Thailand.

What’s on Remember to Remember – Remembrance Day 2020 In Eumundi, as elsewhere, Remembrance Day on Wednesday 11 October at 11am will look a little different on the surface because of COVID19 requirements. Schools will have in-house commemorations. There will be a ringing of bells at the museum, reading of names and the laying of flowers to honour those who gave their lives. Elise Mason as Aladdin The story of Aladdin is well known, with a magic lamp and genie and “Open sesame” with its promise of treasure. Last week, audiences at Good Shepherd Lutheran College Noosaville were thrilled to see four performances of the musical Aladdin Junior Live and see it come to life. The story was given the royal treatment with an explosion of vivid colour, texture, song and dance, as over 80 students from Years 4-12 carried the audience to the mysterious far-away land of Agrabah.

“The biggest challenge was to keep the performers rehearsing, even when they were at home during COVID19 and we weren’t certain the musical could proceed. We were so relieved to be able to perform in front of an audience, it was really rewarding for the students, in fact for everyone involved,” reflected Mr Tomkins.

Handover of donations at Eumundi State School Representatives from Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) and the QCWA handed over items both hand-made and purchased for the Chaplaincy Program designed and implemented by Chappy Sam at the Eumundi State School. EDCA donated a sound system, petrol and food vouchers. The Eumundi Historic Association made a donation of money for school lunches, and Glenda Marks gave her draw-string bags. Visitors were shown an impressive range of activities and heard how the donations would help enrich the learning and lives of children and families at the school.

Committed local community associations will continue to support the Chaplaincy program as they see the value of it for our whole community.

Eumundi State School garden A school garden as a learning tool has existed in some form for 28 years at Eumundi State School. It has earned its place as a beneficial environment for learning across all subject areas, especially the STEM subjects. Teachers report students are more settled and engaged.

This is supported by Australian and International studies with scientific papers exploring the benefits of learning outdoors. Some Australian school gardens and outdoor classrooms are amongst the longest running in the world.

This school garden is far more than a place to grow veggies and flowers. According to Specialist Teacher Jon Gemmell, “the garden provides a practical and authentic place to learn and understand the intricacies of natural and farmed environments. It is a working example of how to solve the climate change dilemma through building soils, growing organic produce and reducing food miles. The gardens give the students an opportunity to relax and re-engage with natural environments and have hope for the future. Essentially, my team is aiming to future-proof children and hopefully inspire their families to make positive decisions that affect 8

The current garden provides plenty of opportunity for learning garden establishment and maintenance, working on broadacre sites as well as plant propagation and seed raising. The chicken and worm systems demonstrate cycling of nutrients and the amazing power of organic nutrition for the garden.

Mr Gemmell acknowledged the long association with the Original Eumundi Markets (OEM) in the provision of the initial worm bins and the weekly delivery of the organic waste from the market.

As the understanding of the important role of school gardens increases, and with a supportive principal and staff, Eumundi School has more plans for the garden and future learning opportunities in the outdoors.

Why kids benefit from team sports As an 11-year-old girl, I have first-hand experience playing the team sport of netball. When playing a team sport every player is essential, both on and off the court. Team sports allow children to make new friends and learn compassion towards others. For example, if they fall over on the court and people run over to help them it makes them feel supported.

Our Eumundi Netball team battles it out on court every Thursday night. At the beginning of the season, we were losing our games. We then started working as a team and started improving.

We have now won some games. Sometimes all it takes is a little teamwork to reach your goals.

There are often team managers to help with your concerns and troubles. It is important to respect them because they give up their time to be with you.

Playing a team sport encourages kids to be 10

physically active whilst they are with their friends. The experience of participating in a team sport helps kids to grow into smart, educated adults who want to take on the world.

Netball is a family-friendly sport where everyone can play. Everyone loves a bit of friendly competition and the prizes at the end of the season. With a bit of luck, you will make it to the top and learn about teamwork along the way.

Wet and wild Halloween Despite the wet weather the streets of Eumundi were alive with ghosts, ghouls and goblins for Halloween. There was widespread damage due to storms, power outages and garden clean-up.

With the massive super storm that swept through our area can I just say how grateful I was that everyone was safe. On Saturday night we attended what we could get to, and a big special thanks to the SES for helping us with traffic and road closures. Some major damage occurred to homes and roads, and as I type this report the power has only been back on for 30 minutes in the Eumundi town itself with other areas of Doonan, Verrierdale and North Arm still affected. We appreciate everyone’s help on Saturday night as we were trying to get to every call for assistance. Some roads we could not even get to, for which I apologise. We especially thank the kind lady that gave us a packet of Tim Tams which ended up being our dinner.

Eumundi Police also arrested 5 drug offenders, 3 offenders for causing a disturbance in Memorial Drive, 1 offender for resisting arrest and 1 offender for driving whilst disqualified. It was pleasing to see only 1 drink driver for the month of October who recorded a reading of 0.154% and was trying to drive to Sunshine Beach.

Our Road Policing unit (based at Coolum) issued a total of 28 speeding and hooning infringement notices within the Eumundi police division.

On this day: Guy Fawkes “Please to remember the 5th of November, gunpowder treason and plot.”

For centuries, English children have celebrated Guy Fawkes Day with bonfires, fireworks and making a ‘guy’ out of padding, old clothes and wearing a mask, to burn on the fire while enjoying potatoes baked in the embers. Who was Guy Fawkes and why is he still remembered?

In 1605, a small group of Catholic noblemen led

by Robert Catesby and Thomas Wintour planned to assassinate the Protestant King James 1 who had inherited the throne from the childless Elizabeth 1. They hoped to install his tiny daughter Elizabeth on the throne instead. They leased a cellar beneath the House of Lords in Westminster, where government decisions were made while the king was present.

Wintour hired Fawkes, a Catholic convert, and expert with explosives, to look after the gunpowder and to ignite it when the king was in the House of Lords.

One of the plotters sent a note to his friend, Lord Monteagle, warning him not to attend Parliament on that day, and he handed it to Robert Cecil, the king’s spy master. Guards caught Fawkes early that morning with the gunpowder. All the conspirators were arrested, tortured and then hanged until almost dead, their intestines pulled out, and their bodies cut into four. All except Fawkes: as he was being hanged, he broke his neck and died without having to endure the rest of his punishment.

Now, every 5th of November, a group of Yeomen of the Guard, in scarlet and gold uniforms, come from the Tower of London to the House of Lords where, in front of palace officials, they are given old-fashioned candle lanterns to search for evidence of signs of a plot against the sovereign or members of parliament. When assured that all is clear, a message is sent to the queen, and the yeomen receive a good feed and return to the Tower.

Plant Profile: If you have grown papaya or paw paw you may have found the fruit is often attacked by birds just as it starts to ripen. It can get powdery mildew which stunts growth of new shoots. Black spot, a fungal disease on leaves and fruit often spoils the fruit as it ripens.

Ingredients

Using a large wooden mortar and pestle, pound the chilli. Add the garlic and pound.

Add the snake beans and bruise slightly. Add the tomatoes and pound. Continue pounding, gradually adding the sugar, fish sauce and lime juice. Add the papaya and continue gently pounding while mixing with a spoon for about 1 minute. Transfer to a serving plate. Serve with a wedge of lime.

First, a little bit of history. Back in 2015, when Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) was developing its vision for the future, Eumundi residents contributed a shared statement, originally developed in 2005, to Council. This statement was developed through gathering opinions from individuals and community groups and was ratified at two large community meetings of 50-60 people each in the School of Arts.

Now, in 2020, planning is underway by the SCC for Eumundi Placemaking – Memorial Dr Streetscape project, and Council is asking residents, business operators and community leaders to have our say, and share knowledge to inform the design of the streetscape, and identify priorities for its improvement.

this information to ensure any placemaking truly reflects individual and shared visions of Eumundi. Here’s how: • Business owners may attend at the Imperial Hotel Eumundi Thursday, 5 November (drop in 4-6pm).

• Attend the free consultation and sausage sizzle in Dick Caplick Park, Sunday 8 November (10am-1.00pm).

This document also clearly defined ideas on what ‘our sustainable human settlement would have’ and this included: • cool and shaded streets and meeting places • a streetscape that valued the past and looked towards a fulfilling future for all residents and visitors • slow traffic in the main street with shared zones and safe roads • safe footpaths and cycle ways within the town and into the surrounding areas • innovative and niche businesses that provide the goods and services needed by the local population for their daily life • enhanced open spaces for use on non-market days.

The document included ideas about how the town’s look and feel should: • be distinguished from all other villages by our unique village character, our pride in our heritage buildings and the welcoming though unique, identifying entrances and streetscape • have streetscapes, treed rural and urban

Easier disabled access? Better lighting at night?

Street flowers? Recycling bins? Better signage for businesses? Move the bus stops? More historic frontages? More public seating? Another public toilet?

Local news Baking for a good cause RSPCA Noosa held their annual garage and plant sale on Saturday 24 October, and this year they combined it with the RSPCA Cupcake Day. Despite the inclement weather, there was a good turnout and lots of wonderful things to buy and eat. Eumundi local, Annemarie Tanner, made her famous tomato relish for the sale and sold all 140 jars. RSPCA Noosa raised $5584.50.

E-Pac for sustainability Local 11-year-old Cooran State School boys, George Facer and Carter Mason, are passionate about a clean environment. They recently launched their E-Pac, a sustainable tourist pack which saw them win a Qld Environmental Award (for ages up to 17) in the 2019 Minister’s Climate Challenge. From this they were given the opportunity to create and film a documentarystyle ad, and in December 2019 they received an Innovation award from Sandy Bolton MP. These young entrepreneurs have a very

Local issues Women’s rights I moved to the Noosa hinterland (Doonan) in 2005 following a long career in community and women’s development and education, beginning in New Zealand, and later in the AsiaPacific region. My work involved design, delivery, and management of programs for agencies such as AusAID, UNIFEM and NZAID. I was fortunate to have work that I was passionate about and committed to, but it was all-consuming. Time for the new generation of capable women to take over. When I settled here, I was ready to take up new interests and pursue neglected ones, to meet people, make new friends and contribute by getting involved in community activities.

Eumundi was the perfect place for this. There has been plenty to do: book club, book reviews, organising literary events, committee work, and more than enough interesting people to meet.

However, I have become increasingly aware that hard-won women’s rights are being eroded at an alarming rate with devastating effects.

All around the world, including Australia, women and girls are under threat. Domestic violence is at unprecedented levels, one woman a week being murdered. Unprecedented rates of sexual violence, fuelled in part by addictive and easily accessible violent pornography, declining maternal health and the feminisation of poverty, especially in older women.

Every issue from climate change to sex trafficking to global conflict has a greater impact on women and girls.

So, I have become involved again, but in a new form for the age we live in. It is mainly online, international, and just as motivating because of its urgency. I can engage with women and men from all around the world, including Australia, to work on local and international campaigns.

As Stevie Nicks says, “We fought very hard for feminism, for women’s rights. What I’m seeing today is a very opposite thing. I don’t know why, but I see women being put back in their place.

And I hate it. We’re losing all we worked so hard for.”

As for me, I can’t let that happen without a fight.

Overhead aircraft traffic From peaceful paradise to noisy neighbourhood Have you seen an increase in overhead air traffic recently? Are you disturbed by late night flights, noisy aircraft or low flying planes? Ever since the new runway opened at the Sunshine Coast Airport (SCA) in June 2020, flights have started to track north across the Hinterland before heading out to their destination.

The airport has been operating at less than 10% capacity due to COVID19, but already many residents have experienced unexpected and distressing levels of air traffic above their previously peaceful homes.

A review of the flight paths is underway and as a community, we have been given a chance to have a say. The next stage is to work with Air Services Australia (ASA) to implement this review to relieve the impact of the flights, as they increase in volume and intensity.

What are you reading now?

I’ve always enjoyed reading books. From a young age, they offered excitement, adventure and a glimpse into other worlds. I enjoy a wide variety of books, from autobiographies to espionage— and everything in-between.

I’m currently reading The Girl on a Golden Elephant by Richter Watkins. I’ve not read any other of his books, and in fact, I’m reading this one as my wife recommended it. I suspect the title appealed to her.

It’s a fast-paced adventure through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, with likeable characters and packed full of history about the Vietnam war. It does draw certain parallels with Indiana Jones, but, if you take it for what it is, it’s definitely a book you can escape into.

What did you learn about SE Asia?

More than I thought I would. I’ve read several books set in this region, but I discovered more about the Ho Chi Minh trail. It’s suffered the single most intense bombing in military history, with one bomb falling every 7 minutes during the Vietnam war. The book also touched on different customs and ways of life; it also didn’t shy away from the poverty and hardship some people suffer.

Is there an elephant?

Yes, several. I can’t go into too much detail as I’ll spoil the plot, but rest assured, the title is not misleading. If you are an animal lover, there

is mention of the Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphins, which are on the edge of extinction.

Would you recommend this book?

It’s a great holiday read, fast-paced, lots of adventure and an exciting romp around SE Asia.

However, if you’re looking for a book with some substance and sub-plots, then this isn’t for you. I enjoyed it, however, as it’s sometimes refreshing to escape into a book which doesn’t require much from the reader.

Who are your go-to authors?

Ken Follett, Bernard Cornwall, Robert Harris and Wilbur Smith. These authors mainly write historical fiction, which is extremely well-written and researched. I enjoy reading books which have a compelling storyline as well as the ability to transfer you to a different period in history.

Eumundi QCWA I’d like to congratulate all the successful recipients of Council’s latest round of the Major Grants program. So many worthy projects will now receive a helping hand. One of them is the Eumundi QCWA which received $5000 to upgrade internal and external lighting, and install a projector and screen at the Hall. I am looking forward to seeing their work as they prepare for their centenary year in 2022.

Getting into summer exercise As summer approaches, preparing yourself for exercise throughout the hotter months is important. There are a few things to consider if you are working out through summer.

• Hydrate before, during and after exercise.

Ideally, drink one or two glasses at least half an hour prior to your workout. Sipping small amounts during exercise and replacing lost fluids after your workout are equally important.

• Exercise in the cooler parts of day, or a short workout in the afternoon/evening is another option.

• Wear loose, breathable, light-coloured clothing. Moisture-wicking fabrics help you stay cooler.

• Replenish your electrolytes but avoid sports drinks. Try making your own with coconut water, salt and honey or look for an electrolyte replacement drink with no artificial sugar, colours or additives.

• If you feel nauseous, dizzy or faint, then stop.

• Use a wet cloth, spray bottle or cool towel around your neck while you work out.

You may feel you have less energy, and workouts can feel harder, when it is hot. So be sure not to push yourself too hard. As long as you consider these factors there is every reason to keep up your exercise routine during summer.

First Nations art exhibition The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (CBFAC) is hosting another First Nations art exhibition Here We Stand, Always throughout the whole gallery, for emerging and established First Nations artists residing on Gubbi-Gubbi land. Ambassadors Dr Jandamarra Cadd, and Uncle Paul Calcott are excited to take this project to the next level.

The exhibition is a diverse representation of the amazingly talented First Nations artists we have living on the coast and is made possible by grants from Flying Arts and Australian Regional Arts Fund.

The exhibition culminates in a Gubbi-Gubbi celebration during NAIDOC week 8-15 November.

Sculpture on the edge Maleny Have you ever been to an outdoors sculpture exhibition? If not, then it is time to head to Spicer’s in Maleny to Sculpture On The Edge to bask in, and be baffled by, the limitless wealth of expressive pieces on show this year.

Eumundi Voice spoke with Sonya Moran from North Arm who brought home a commendation in 2016. Sonya said it had been an honour to represent her local area at the exhibition, which takes people on a journey through nature whilst enjoying the works of all shapes and sizes. Sonya’s work is inspired by the ambience that living in the bush brings.

Many of the pieces at the exhibition are made from all kinds of mediums and textiles. Sonya’s Two in a Groove marble sculpture represents yin and yang, male and female, and how they move together in unison, whilst incorporating negative space, but also reflecting independent movement at the same time.

Eumundi District Swimming Club The swim season has just commenced with club nights held fortnightly on Wednesdays from 5.45pm-7pm. The next meeting is Wednesday 11 November. There are three club nights remaining before the Christmas break.

All are welcome, whether a beginner or experienced swimmer, ages from 7 to 18 years. A free trial is offered with the first two club nights free-of-charge.

The club currently boasts a national swimmer, Mitchell Warren, who is placed in the top 10 nationally in his age group, also, six state-level swimmers aged 10-16 years.

Belonging to a club is a great way for your children to have fun, get fit and make new friends.

One of us Peter Phillips: Artist Peter Phillips Gallery was a jaw-dropping discovery on the recent Noosa Open Studios trail.

Peter, along with his mates at the Royal College of Art in London, kicked off Pop Art in 1961 with the ‘Young Contemporaries’ exhibition. Andy Warhol’s bright Pop Art prints of Marilyn Monroe are now familiar to us all.

“The teachers at the Royal College of Art were of a generation that thought artists painted landscapes and portraits, and I was painting cars and pin-up girls. They didn’t like you being different, and they didn’t understand. They know how to paint. You don’t. You’re just a bum from Birmingham,” said Peter.

In 1961, the ‘Young Contemporaries’ exhibition catapulted Peter Phillips, David Hockney, Brett Whitely, Peter Blake (who did the Beatles’ St Peppers album cover) and other classmates into the public eye. It showcased youthful, sexy, mass-produced, witty works drawn from American consumer culture.

Peter moved to New York on a Harkness Fellowship in 1964, and exhibited alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Now, on a Distinguished Talent visa, he continues to paint, six decades on, in his open-

At his gallery, Pop Art paintings, collages, prints from the 60s and recent works cover the walls. I recognised as the cover of The Cars 1984 album: its huge, wild, and explicitly detailed American advertising images in vivid auto-paints.

“My advice to anybody is do what you want to do, be who you are. It doesn’t matter what anybody else says, but do it well, as well as you can.”

Our environment Sunshine Coast Environment Council The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) has partnered with WA start-up ClimateClever to support the community in taking action on climate change, while also helping to reduce household and school utility bills and increase affordability.

Natalie Frost, Coordinator of the SCEC said, “We are excited about the ClimateClever partnership and the opportunities it provides to share and implement practical actions to reduce carbon emissions whilst engaging with the community on a wider level.”
