RaychaelStineʼspaintingsarethelatestexamples inhervisionseries,ofpredominantlyabstract worksthattheartisthasbeenmakingforseveral years.Whilethepaintingsareimmediately appealingbecausetheirpainterlysurfacesand vividcolor,theyhaveamysteriousqualitythatis compelling,butnoteasilyassimilated.

Strategicallyplaced,heavilyimpastoedbrush strokesfloatinanatmosphericrealm,the physicalityoftheirexistencemadeplausiblewith shadow,createdfromanunseen,undefinedlight source,emanatingfromsomewherewithinthe composition.Initially,thebrushstrokesappearto beappliedatrandom,however,theshadowsin thebackgroundvalidatetheirexistenceasvital entitiesthatseemtohoverabovethesurfaceof thepictureplane.Thelooselypaintedborders aroundtheperimeterofherpaintingsopenupand magnifythecompositionalentitiesthatholdthe centerofhercompositionsasifacurtainisopened revealingatableauofvisualactivity.

Theconfidentlypaintedabstractpassagesoften sharetheirenvironmentwithunexpectedtrompe loeilelementssuchasimagesoftearsand droplets,flowersandflowerpetals.Whileitseems thatthejuxtapositionoftheheavilypaintedareas ofthecompositionmightbeatoddswiththe hyper-realisticallypaintedelements,theyinfact coexistinthepeaceful,externalworldthatthe artisthascreatedforthem.Thereisofcoursea sustainingrealmwheretheabstractand representationalentitiesareanimatedinan underlyingvisualvocabularytheartisthas developed,theiconographyofsituational representation,aportaltotheartistʼspersonal experiences,herrelationshipwithherdogsfor example,payinghomagetocaninesinherlife, fromthepast,present,andperhapsfuture.Ms Stinesvisionpaintingsplacetheviewerasan observerandparticipantinwhatseemstobea constantlymovingtargetinthetransitionalworlds withinhercompositions.Likeanelusivequarry, remainingslightlyoutofrangeofexacting descriptionandcategorization,whileretaining integrityandanadmirationofanentitythatdefies beingcaptured.

Thickskeinsofpolychromedmediumflowfrom thesurfaceofLizTrosper'sworksinatorrentof colorandmovement,seeminglyinamomentary stasis.Theimmediacyofthethree-dimensional elementsisheightenedastheyarevisuallypushed fromtheundulatingsurfaceofatmosphericfluidity thatcreatesaquasi-reflectivebackspace.The backspacegroundsthecomposition,while simultaneouslymirroringthephysicalityofits three-dimensionalcounterparts.

Ratherthanservingasadecorativepresentation, thesimplewhiteframeswithplexiglassglazing becomeadeviceofnecessityreadytocontainthe tumultuousenergysealedwithin.

Embracingthebeautyofseeminglyrandom imperfection,JohnPomaraapproachesthe occurrenceofspontaneityinthisseriesof paintingstitled“PoolParty,”byattemptingto remaindiscretelyatadistance.Heinitiallysetsup asituationthatbecomesthecatalystforunlikely combinationsofoilpaintandotheradditivesto reactwithoneanother.Pomaraeﬀectivelycreates avisualrecordoftheseelectiveaﬀinitiesandtheir antithesisasthefluidpropertiesofthepaintrepel orattractotherelementsthatheadds.Asthese episodicreactionsoccur,theunpredictableactivity ismediatedtoagreatdegreebytheartistʼs observationoftheentropicaspectofthisprocess. Pomaraallowstheinitialliquidityofthisviscous amalgamationtobeginsolidifying,ortobecome morefluid,ortobebrokendownwithadditives,or tobeotherwise“influenced,”creatingamyriadof otherpossibilities.

The artist’s exploration of these subsequent possibilities propels the painting in amazing and unpredictable directions.The abandonment of formal aspects of composition becomes exceedingly helpful in the continuation of this flowing imagery. Remaining in flux, the chemical properties of the various mediums persist in their attraction or aversion to one another. It is as if Pomara were both sorcerer, and apprentice, allowing his “laboratory” to be inundated with wildly out of control colors, surfaces, and improbable combinations that lead to a labyrinth of never-ending variations. Suddenly the magic wand is waved and the frenzied activity is immediately quieted, giving way to these extraordinarily captivating paintings, imbued with otherworldly imagery that expands the viewer’s imagination and now remains as immutable evidence of the artist's vision.
