THE EUFMD TRAINING MENU 2022-2023

Training credits The EuFMD training programme is demand-led, taking into account trainee feedback and the requests made by the EuFMD training focal points. The overall objective of this training menu is to improve preparedness for management of FMD and similar transboundary animal diseases (FAST diseases*) crises by EuFMD member nations and across Europe as a whole. The EuFMD training courses are practical, interactive and discussion-based. The courses make use of virtual learning support to complement and support face-to-face training. The demand-led nature of training means that the exact content of each course can be adapted, particularly in the case of country-specific courses. This training menu will be implemented from the beginning of 2022 until September 2023. Each member nation will be allocated ten training credits. Member nations can decide how they want to spend them, by selecting activities offered in the training menu that best suit their priorities. Please consider that a minimum of two training credits must be allocated to activities delivered remotely (online). Some courses (particularly workshops) will be held if there is sufficient interest from member nations and a suitable number of participants. One of EuFMD’s priorities is to raise awareness of FAST disease prevention and control and to promote collaboration between the private and public sectors. Therefore, a number of courses are available to the private sector as self-funded places, subject to the candidate meeting the requirements established for the specific course. Member nations can also access additional selffunded places in the different courses. For most courses, a prepared presentation is available on request if needed for cascade training. Additionally, most course content may be used for cascade training, but the EuFMD must be asked prior to use, and acknowledged. What does the course involve?

1. Real Time Training

3 credits for one participant (includes flights and all incountry costs).

This course gives participants the unique opportunity to visit farms with suspected FMD cases and carry out clinical and epidemiological investigations in “Real Time”. The course is preceded by a three hour v-learning induction course.

Currently on hold due to travel restrictions. Tentative dates for the next courses: End of 2022 During 2023 Location: Kenya, Uganda or another FMD endemic country

Some selffunded places in this course will be open to the Private sector.

Topics covered: • Clinical and laboratory diagnosis of FMD; • Lesion ageing; • Outbreak investigation and epidemiology; • Biosecurity. Diseases covered: • FMD and other FAST diseases (depending on availability of cases in the endemic country visited). This is a five-day intensive course which allows you to see FMD, discuss with farmers, your peers and an expert trainer.

Who should take the course? Veterinarians who will be involved actively in diagnosis or control of FMD outbreaks. This course is suitable for veterinarians and stakeholders working in the private and public sector, considering the importance of their role in recognizing clinical signs of FMD and notification of suspicions; applying general and on-farm biosecurity; as well as procedures applied after confirmation of FMD.

Eligibility Requirements Language requirements: Participants should have good working knowledge of English. Other requirements: To be eligible for this course, candidates will have to provide a detailed plan prior to the course on how they will pass the knowledge acquired in the course to colleagues, when they return home (cascade training). 3. Online FMD Emergency Preparation (Multi-country, in English)

1 credit for 20 Participants

This online course is open for 4 weeks, during which participants must complete approximately 1215 hours of selfdirected study.

Veterinarians who will be directly involved in diagnosis or investigating FMD suspicions or outbreaks.

Language requirements: Participants should have a good working knowledge of English.

This is a useful tool in raising awareness of FMD and the importance of early detection amongst a wider group of practitioners and is particularly suitable for field level government and private veterinarians.

Other requirements: Participants taking this course should disseminate the knowledge acquired as much as possible to other colleagues involved in FMD surveillance or control activities (cascade training).

Some selffunded places in this course will be open to the private sector.

There will be a one-hour webinar at the beginning and end of the course, and EuFMD expert trainers are available via an online discussion forum to ask and answer questions. This online course is open for 4 weeks, during which participants must complete approximately 12-15 hours of self-directed study.

Veterinarians who will be directly involved in diagnosis or investigating FMD suspicions or outbreaks.

Requirements: Participants taking this course should disseminate the knowledge acquired as much as possible to other colleagues involved in FMD surveillance or control activities.

There will be a onehour webinar at the beginning and end of the course, and EuFMD expert trainers are available via an online discussion forum to ask and answer questions The virtual learning FMD Emergency Preparation course is translated into the national language. The course is adapted to the national contingency plans and standard operating procedures, with additional content added on request. The host country trainer must assist with proof reading of translated documents, advising on adaptation of the course, and take part in the webinars and discussion forum.

The national FMD Emergency Preparation Course can be a useful tool to link different parts of a country’s veterinary service together- e.g. central/headquar ters staff with laboratories, field level staff. The online course could also include private veterinarians or non-veterinary industry stakeholders.

5. Online FMD Emergency Preparation Course (from second and onwards national course)

This online course is open for 4 weeks, during which participants must complete approximately 12-15 hours of self-directed study.

The primary target audience are official veterinarians in free countries/regions, particularly in those at higher risk Veterinarians, whether official or private, who will be directly involved in diagnosis or investigating LSD suspicions or outbreaks and in the implementation of surveillance and control measures would also benefit from taking this course.

Language requirements: Participants should have good working knowledge of English.

The course includes live sessions that allow trainees to interact with LSD experts (webinars and/or live discussion sessions). The expert trainers are available via an online discussion forum to ask and answer questions. Topics covered: • Introduction to the disease. • Clinical diagnosis • Sampling and laboratory diagnosis • Epidemiology and outbreak investigation • Surveillance • Control Measures with focus on vaccination. This course aims at providing trainees with an integral overview of LSD surveillance and control, as it covers stages from surveillance for early detection to surveillance to prove freedom of the disease, going through measures taken during an LSD outbreak.

8. Support to national simulation exercises

3 training credits per country for a country-specific simulation exercise.

EuFMD will assist the countries in the development and implementation of simulation exercises for FMD and other FAST animal diseases.

Language: The simulation exercise could take place in the participants’ national language.

The development and implementation will be supported through the use of a crisis simulation software and remotely assisted.

Dates to be decided with the country

The aim of these online tabletop exercises will be to test different parts of contingency plans by simulating a FAST disease outbreak. The specific objectives of each exercise will be decided together with the participating country/ies (e.g. stamping out operations). 9. Support to multi-country simulation exercises

Through regional initiatives, the EuFMD aims to support the neighbouring countries with a tailored course, which will meet their specific needs to increase preparedness of FAST diseases.

Regional initiatives aim at strengthening the relationship between neighbouring countries in preparedness and control of FMD and other FAST diseases and furthermore to improve the preparedness of the individual Member Nations.

The EuFMD believes that regional initiatives are extremely valuable to share good practices and improve collaboration across borders therefore encourages countries to consider this option of our training menu. 12. Organizing Simulation Exercises for animal disease emergencies online course

One credit for two participants .

The aim is to learn how to prepare simulation exercises suitable for the country needs and increase the understanding of their value as part of the emergency preparedness cycle.

This course is suitable for central/regional veterinary services members who are involved in contingency planning and management of exotic disease outbreaks.

This course will be structured in four weeks and will consist of live online sessions, v-learning modules for self-study and assignments to be made in teams. Each week participants will have access to one or two v-learning modules, to supplementary materials (a glossary, templates, guidance documents, examples and videos) and weekly assignments. What does the course involve? This is a two week course run by the Pirbright Institute. The course will offer a thorough understanding of the work undertaken in a diagnostic laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. In addition, the course will provide an overview of LSD and PPR. Participants will get an overview of the laboratories quality management system and the course will be delivered through a series of seminars, practical demonstrations and hands-on practical work. This training will provide a thorough understanding of current diagnostic techniques for LSD and PPR, including the following practical diagnostic tests: • ELISA • Virus isolation • Real-time (RT-)PCR • Sequencing set-up Diseases covered: • LSD • PPR
