ampeños who love Bucco Bruce now have two Super Bowl championships to be happy about, and the team’s journey has undoubtedly been a bright spot during this nightmare year.

Last Wednesday, the City of Tampa decided to celebrate with a boat championship parade.

Photos snapped from the shore and the media boat capture the well-deserved joy of the players and staff as well as the excitement of fans standing shoulder-to-shoulder along the parade route which went down the Hillsborough River from Armature Works to Sparkman Wharf and the Port of Tampa. The photos are also deeply painful as they capture our neighbors openly flouting Tampa Mayor Jane Castor’s executive order saying face masks must be worn in the “Entertainment Zones” on the parade route (the city for its part openly said it was interested in encouragement over enforcement of any mask mandates, and on Monday told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay it issued zero individual citations for violations of the EO).

By Ray Roa In a statement emailed to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, Davis wrote “Along with several other local leaders, I attended the championship presentation at the port to celebrate our partners, the Buccaneers, and their historic win. I wore my mask throughout the event, only taking it off briefly for a few photos and then putting it back on for the remainder of the time I was in attendance. As I said in my email to employees and families last week, we should always follow CDC guidelines to stay healthy and safe, and that includes me. In hindsight, I should have kept my mask on for the entire celebration.”

Nearly a week after their delivery, none of those questions have been addressed by the spokesperson.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers championship boat parage, which preceded the party, started at 1 p.m. at Armature Works in Tampa Heights and made its way down the Hillsborough River past Sparkman Wharf and to the Port of Tampa where Bucs players, friends, family and locally famous folks (like Addison?) rubbed elbows with athletes and coaching staff. On the stretch of the Tampa Riverwalk, fans lined up shoulder to shoulder, mostly maskless to celebrate.

Local health officials like the University of South Florida’s Jay Wolfson, Dr.P.H., J.D. have lauded the NFL for its ability to protect players but noted how maskless gatherings surrounding the Super Bowl—which happened on Feb. 7 at Raymond James Stadium—could contribute to the spread of coronavirus, and a highly contagious U.K. variant already present in the Tampa Bay area.

illsborough County’s superintendent of schools is under scrutiny after being spotted maskless at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers championship celebration last Wednesday.

But it’s not necessarily his bonehead move to remove his mask at a potential superspreader event that’s causing waves.

“Five days after sending an email to all school staff telling them to avoid large gatherings, Hillsborough County Public Schools superintendent Addison Davis turns up in the middle of the Bucs’ party, maskless,” Timothy Burke—a Tampa-based video archivist and media consultant—wrote in a Twitter post.

“HCPS is the seventh largest school district in the country.”

The accompanying screengrab from a WFLA broadcast shows Davis in a red tie maskless, mouth ajar and just a few feet from Tom Brady— who just did his job by bringing Tampa Bay its second Super Bowl title—and standing shoulder to shoulder with a crowd of people.

In that Feb. 5 email to staff ahead of Super Bowl weekend, Davis asked “Team Hillsborough” to “remain safe by continuing to practice social distancing, wear free face coverings when necessary, and avoid large gatherings when possible.”

Davis was also feeling pretty confident about the Bucs’ chances against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“While we plan for the Buccaneers to be victorious on Sunday evening...” Addison wrote.

“I need everyone’s assistance ensuring that our students win on Monday, February 8th.”

Davis wrote that one thing the district has learned during the pandemic is that many of its students need consistency with access to teachers, support staff, leaders and their peers, adding “The ability for each of us to be this constant in their lives as part of the Hillsborough County Public School System is what sets us apart from so many others.”

The superintendent went on to say he was looking forward to celebrating with his team on Monday, but all bets were apparently off if you got a chance to go to the Bucs championship celebrations at the Port of Tampa and Sparkman Wharf.

Video released by WTSP shows Davis greeting several people without his mask on.

“10 Tampa Bay captured footage of Davis among the crowd and not wearing a mask as the Bucs approached the stage. We also have video of Davis backstage approaching Tom Brady before walking over to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor,” WTSP’s Liz Crawford wrote. “Davis appears to be photobombing the mayor’s picture before saying, ‘I don’t have a mask on, sorry!’ You can see a mask being held in his hand.”

Davis also sent a batch of photos to help prove his point, but CL sent this short round of follow ups to a Hillsborough school spokesperson.

Didn’t his Feb. 5 email also ask staff to avoid large gatherings if possible? Doesn’t this go against that advice? Are there any plans for Davis to quarantine? I get that he’s a local leader, but how did he end up there and who invited him? What’s his role at the championship party?

Was there anyone else from the county school system admin there?

espite the threat of an executive order carrying a $500 fine and a civil infraction, the City of Tampa says zero people were cited for not wearing masks in the city’s “Entertainment Zones” during the run up to Super Bowl 55.

“There were no citations issued to individuals for not wearing masks,” Keith O’Connor, a spokesperson for the City of Tampa, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “We educated and encouraged everyone we came in contact with that were not wearing masks to wear them. In the days leading up to the Super Bowl the city gave out over 200,000 masks and the majority of the people were receptive to this and complied.”

O’Connor told CL that roughly 40 City of Tampa Code Enforcement officers were out last week from Wednesday, Feb. 3 through Super Bowl Sunday, along with 10-15 code officers from Hillsborough County. However, these officers only gave citations to local businesses for COVID-19 violations, not individuals. In total, 12 citations were handed out to local bars and restaurants during

that time period, including just four handed out on Super Bowl Sunday. Almost every one of those bars and restaurants were in Ybor City.

On Jan. 27, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor issued an executive order, which was in effect until Feb. 13, requiring individuals to wear masks in the city’s outdoor “Entertainment Districts.” Violators were subject to a possible $500 fine and a nominal civil infraction, said Castor.

At the time, the mayor did not specify how it would be enforced, and later noted that the order was “in contrast” to one issued last year from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, which prohibits cities from fining individuals for ignoring local pandemic restrictions. She also added that penalties were meant as a “last resort.”

Adding to this, Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan recently told the Tampa Bay Times that he didn't want his officers to be “the mask police so to speak. We will if we have to.”

Well, it would appear that no one was “the mask police.”

LOCAL NEWS

Since the Super Bowl, literally thousands of photos and videos showed hoards of maskless people crammed together in Tampa’s “Entertainment Zones,” like SoHo and Ybor City, oftentimes near maskless police officers.

When asked why no citations were given to individuals who ignored Castor’s mandate, O’Connor said masks are a “personal responsibility.”

“The goal from the beginning was to get compliance from as many people as possible and not to cite people,” said O’Connor. “The citation route was reserved as a last resort and like I said we were well received from the public as the vast majority complied with our requests.

The wearing of the mask is a personal responsibility and of course we could not be everywhere all of the time.”

Speaking at a press conference Monday, Castor also said she believed the majority of people were wearing masks, and stated that “the media can always find examples of bad behavior.”

But medical experts disagree. In an email to CL, Dr. Jay Wolfson, a senior associate dean of the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida and an expert that joined Castor at a previous Super Bowl press conference, said “I saw what you saw.”

Wolfson added that everyone partying without masks knew the rules, but that human

behavior took over. “...for most, it will not be consequential,” he said before warning of the super-spreader potential of Super Bowl weekend’s events. “...we had tens of thousands of out of state visitors, bringing with them whatever they may have acquired—and they will be taking whatever they might pick up here back to Kansas City and elsewhere in the U.S.,” wrote Wolfson. “And everybody participated in the joyous celebrations—many in large groups, in close quarters (even outdoors) cheering, yelling, singing—without masks and no social distancing.”

The medical community, he said, will continue to watch, monitor, conduct surveillance, test and seek to manage public health resources going forward in preparation for a post Super Bowl coronavirus surge, which he said would not happen right away.

Since nearly 60% of cases are asymptomatic, and there is an increasing likelihood that at least one of the new strains may have snuck into the gatherings, Wolfson said aggressive public health precautions are very much needed to combat the risk of community spread.

“It does not happen right away—it takes a few weeks to observe the effects, both here and in the places to which people participating in the unmasked, undistanced events return,” Wolfson said.

Wolves at the door

Senate Democrats are more comfortable being prey than predator.

I

wanted to ignore Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. It would be a low-rent, low-stakes sequel whose ending was obvious from the opening credits, I assumed.

I was mostly correct.

The evidence of Trump’s guilt was undeniable and irrefutable. So was the cowardice of the Republican minority that would inevitably acquit him. It didn’t matter how compelling the House managers’ case was or how harrowingly dramatic their presentation. Republicans would find an excuse—a half-assed complaint about the process rather than the merits of Trump’s actions— just as they’d done 13 months ago during the first impeachment trial.

This time, the twofold, self-contradictory excuse went like so: 1) The trial was unconstitutional because Trump is now a “private citizen.” 2) The House improperly rushed Trump’s impeachment before he left office.

Needless to say, these aren’t serious arguments. (Democrats were supposed to move more slowly through impeachment, but try Trump faster? Or does impeachment not apply to the last month of a president’s term?) They’re not intended to be. They exist not to convince but to provide cover. The calculation was transparently cynical: don’t offend Trump’s supporters (you’ll lose votes), but don’t endorse Trump’s rhetoric (you’ll lose funders).

No one embodied this cynicism better than Sith lord Mitch McConnell, who, after voting to acquit the former president, made an effective case for Trump’s conviction.

“American citizens attacked their own government. They used terrorism to try to stop a specific piece of democratic business they did not like,” the minority leader said. “…

They did this because they had been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on earth—because he was angry he’d lost an election.”

He voted to acquit, McConnell continued, “because former President Trump is constitutionally not eligible for conviction. There is no doubt this is a very close question. Donald Trump was the president when the House voted [on Jan. 13], though not when the House chose to deliver the [impeachment] papers.”

Not mentioned: McConnell, then majority leader, refused to recall the Senate from its recess to try Trump before Joe Biden’s inauguration.

There’s nothing particularly interesting about McConnell’s well-documented duplicity or amoral lust for power. Nor is there anything novel about the thin reeds Republicans grasped at to project intellectual coherence while bending the knee to MAGA. Writing about conservative politics in the Trump era is like listening to an AC/DC record: the details change, but the song is basically the same.

Still, two surprises happened on Saturday that lent drama to the fait accompli.

The first was the House managers’ decision to call witnesses—which the Senate agreed to, then Democrats capitulated on in exchange for nothing. Specifically, House managers wanted to call a Republican congresswoman who issued a statement corroborating a CNN story about a phone call between Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in which Trump refused to call off the rioters during the insurrection.

The testimony might not have changed Republican votes, but it would have increased the political price of acquittal. Trump’s lawyers knew this. So did Senate Republicans, who threatened to drag out the trial for weeks. Democrats could have called their bluff. Instead, they caved. Like kindergarteners, they wanted their recess. Or, as Sen. Chris Coons reportedly told House managers, “People want to get home for Valentine’s Day.” It was an own goal for the ages.

As House manager Rep. Jamie Raskin, the star of the trial, put it: “If you make yourself a sheep, the wolves will eat you.”

Democrats were perhaps saved from their own fecklessness by surprise no. 2: Seven Republicans voted to convict Trump, making this the most bipartisan impeachment trial in history.

Most were predictable: Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah voted to convict Trump a year ago. Sens. Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania condemned Trump after the Jan. 6 riot, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska demanded his resignation. They and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine rejected a Republican motion in late January to declare the trial unconstitutional.

More unexpectedly, on the trial’s first day, Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy joined the apostates in a second vote on the impeachment’s constitutionality. Very unexpectedly, on Saturday, Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina declared Trump “guilty of inciting an insurrection.”

WHAT A HOWLER: Democrats’ caving to Republicans was an own goal for the ages.

Applaud them for swimming against the tide.

But they weren’t jumping on a live grenade. Burr and Toomey are retiring. Cassidy and Collins won’t face reelection until 2026. Neither will Sasse, though he might seek the GOP’s presidential nomination by carving out an anti-MAGA lane. If Romney runs in 2024, he’ll need Utah’s independents and Democrats. Murkowski is up next year, but Alaska’s new ranked-choice system means she doesn’t have to cater to the MAGA crowd.

It goes without saying that the half-dozen other Republicans with purported presidential aspirations obsequiously backed Trump.

State parties in Nebraska, Louisiana, and North Carolina denounced their treacherous senators. Trump allies in the House lashed out at McConnell. And Trump bootlicker Lindsey Graham announced that Burr’s vote made Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump the favorite to replace Burr—never mind her lack of qualifications or New York residency—which

must be unhappy news to far-right candidate Mark Walker, who’d already condemned Burr.

These are the outlines of the forthcoming power struggle: Trump will insert himself into primaries to reward loyalists and punish adversaries. McConnell will try to hold back a flood of fringe candidates while keeping his caucus together by refocusing their enmity on the Democrats’ agenda. His tightrope act will allow no room for compromise.

Herein lies a lesson Democrats would be foolish not to learn: Though Trump’s culpability was never in dispute, Democrats couldn’t muster 60 votes to convict him. How do they expect to overcome a filibuster on anything substantial?

Sharing space can be a revolutionary and complicated concept.

I

t is a revolutionary idea to share a space, which first requires asking permission. I notice how much of human behavior is to not respect the space of who you want to engage with or rather, take from.

We take on this invasive tendency also in the form of encroaching and taking advantage of cultures, commodifying their lives, products and resources, with this whole sense of ownership, which seems to be the crux of white supremacy as well as general masculine energy.

Historically, the space we inhabit is of a woman. It starts from when we are in the womb, quite literally the first space we occupy. Is it any wonder that the deep disregard and violence towards women occurs as a perpetual expression of this first impulse we all possess as humans to occupy a woman then rip her apart.

Like rapper Chael Blinya’s “BLK Hole” lyric, “cause off rip, she got ripped off”, the idea of a supreme male God who single-handedly created everything is a direct act of erasure on the role of the feminine side of life and is the root of disrespect towards women. In plain sight humanity has failed to cite its source.

I have been hosting a virtual poetry workshop series over the past couple months, the most recent installment themed “Making Sense of Space.” Together we explored “space” in different aspects— outer space, as in black holes and NASA, which seems to come foremost in our minds when we consider “space,” as well as “space” in terms of where we occupy and the space created when we experience loss in our lives.

This idea of the infinite void can feel at once hopeless and hopeful. While black holes could delete the universe, they also “store information like the ultimate hard drive, they are like holograms in that everything inside is projected on its event horizon” (“Why Black Holes Could Delete the Universe—The Information Paradox”) We are projections directed towards an endless wall, a moving picture whirring constant, so we turn as much as we can, spinning the wheel, wondering how did we get here.

And like the drive-in movie experience, we may discover that arriving in a space, the act of coming, is best when involving both of us.

Florida now has a giant ‘River Monster’ problem.

lorida already has invasive Burmese pythons, Nile crocodiles, herpes monkeys and capybara, but now it can also add one of the world’s largest predatory freshwater fish, which can grow up to 10-feet long and weigh over 400 pounds.

While on a hike this month along the Caloosahatchee River, Cape Coral resident Leah Getts spotted a dead arapaima, which is a massive non-native fish typically found in South America’s Amazon Basin, reports Fort Myers news station WBBH. “It was bigger than my 7-year-old. I thought that is nothing I’ve ever seen before. It was kind of white with a pinkish tail.” said Getts to the station. “It had a huge kind of open bass looking kind of mouth. It didn’t look like anything I had heard of or seen before.”

After Getts posted a photo of the fish to Facebook, commenters pointed out that it was in fact an arapaima. “They were saying it was an arapaima, and I looked at pictures and it was dead on,” added Getts.

John Cassani, an Ecologist for the Calusa Waterkeeper, told the station the dead fish

could indicate that there are more, which could be devastating to the local ecosystem.

“Obviously a big aggressive predatory fish is popular amongst anglers. But the risk to the ecosystem far outweighs the recreational value of the species.”

According to The Smithsonian, arapaima are aggressive predatory fish, feeding on pretty much whatever it can fit into its vacuum-like mouth, including fish, birds, lizards and mammals. Because of a modified swim bladder that opens into its mouth like a lung, arapaima are able to live in water with little to no oxygen, which means they can survive on dry land for an entire day.

What’s worse, arapaima can also lay hundreds of thousands of eggs over their incredibly long life span of up to 20 years.

The fish has been a popular fixture of the Discovery Channel show “River Monsters,” and is often been referred to as a “Dinosaur fish,” not because of its tough, armored scales, but due to the fact that the species hasn’t changed much at all in the fossil record for over 23 million years.

Tampa photographer Chip Weiner refocuses lens on Burgert Brothers archive.

I

gnore the rising rents, housing shortage and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ wild west approach to reopening for just a moment, and think about how gorgeous your hometown is. Thanks in part to the Buccaneers, Lightning, Rays and Rowdies—and not to mention the winter storm ravaging the rest of the U.S this week—eyes have turned towards Tampa Bay as a great place to make a living. And with pride and interest in our neck of the woods peaking, there’s never been a better time to look back at how we got here.

Thankfully, there’s a collection of photos for that. The most famous one was curated and captured by the Burgert Brothers, Al and Jean Evelyn, who led one of old Tampa’s leading commercial photography firms. The brothers were most prolific from the early-1900s to the early-1960s, but the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative has nearly 19,000 Burgert stills that date back to the late-1800s.

Tampeño photographer Chip Weiner moved here in 1964 and became obsessed with that

collection as well as photos from a collection owned by the University of South Florida. So in August, he started to pore over more than 12,000 Burgert shots to begin the research for his new book “Burgert Brothers: Another Look.” The nearly 200-page super-zine finds Weiner (a pre-pandemic contributor to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay) meticulously re-photographing locations in Burgert photos and providing a detailed look into the then-andnow of locales both familiar and obscure.

All the greatest hits are there. There’s the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City (complete with amazing neon signage in the 1950 shot) and the downtown Tampa intersection of Franklin and Polk Streets where in 1960 students from Blake and Middleton high schools, together with NAACP leaders, staged sit-ins at Woolworth. The Cuban, Italian and German clubs are recaptured, along with the iconic intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Platt Street. There are even handfuls of Hyde Park and Seventh Avenue shots, too.

But some of the book’s real gems come from the less fussed-about parts of the Burgert collection. Like the Coleman’s Super Service station on Floribraska and Florida Avenues, downtown Tampa’s original Goody Goody, Seminole Heights’ Independent Bar, the Gulf Oil station on Bayshore or the Arctic Ice and La Tropical Beer buildings in Ybor. Weiner’s own research even led him to correct some inaccuracies in the original Burgert captions.

“Of the thousands of Burgert portraits that still exist today, you only see about a hundred that are used over and over again, but Chip got some deep cuts,” Rodney Kite-Powell told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. KitePowell is Hillsborough County’s official historian and the Saunders Foundation Curator of History at the Tampa Bay History Center, where he joined the staff in 1994. In short, he is an invaluable fount of local knowledge.

“He dove into that collection… there’s more modern stuff from the ‘50s that you just don’t see, and I hope people will dive in, too. The book belongs out on the coffee table for houseguests and friends to see,” Kite-Powell added.

“It should be well-used and never just sitting on the shelf.”

To Kite-Powell—who said that the History Center has picked up books to sell in the gift shop—the amazing thing about the Burgert collection is how many of the shots are still around and available to the public. Newspapers and amateur photographers certainly did their part to capture scenes in a private manner, but the Burgerts were hired contractors and having their photos available to the public in such a large volume is significant.

pictures online and preserve them.”

For Weiner—who spends his non-photography hours as a licensed mental health counselor—honoring the old photographs’ legacy was paramount. The project started out as a personal endeavor, but started to become the book as his pandemic summer, with no face-to-face

therapy, went on. He consulted other photographers like Boyzell Hosey, Deputy Editor of Photography at the Tampa Bay Times, and Renato Rampolla for advice. An old medium format film camera and a tilt-shift lens similar to those used by the Burgerts let Weiner indulge in his fascination with the brothers’ process. Being able to

as many hi-res Burgert photos as possible.

“There are some estimates that say that there are anywhere from 50,000-70,000, images, whether they’re negatives or prints.

Unfortunately only about 25%, or so, of the collection still exists, but that 25% is just incredible,” Kite-Powell explained. “The public has had access to the collection for so long, and the library was very quick to start putting

spend hours researching newspaper clippings before standing exactly where the Burgerts stood—decades later, but at the same time of day to account for sunlight—and trying to take the same photo was the payoff.

But Weiner stops short of calling himself a historian. In fact, there was a lot of copy—like the lost history of the building that’s home to Ybor City’s Coyote Ugly—Weiner left on the cutting room floor.

“I wrote just paragraphs and paragraphs,” Weiner told CL. And when it came to his own take on since-demolished landmarks like the Pettaway on the corner of Florida Avenue and Twiggs St. (now the Franklin Exchange parking garage), Chip just walked away. “The history is less about the building and more about the Morton Williams grocery store.

When I really started going into it, I said to myself, ‘Well this is getting out of my lane.’”

“So when I say I’m not a historian, I mean that I’m not one to the degree of someone like Rodney Kite-Powell who’s just all dug into that stuff,” Weiner added.

Still, for KitePowell, there’s one part of Tampa history

missing from the book—but it’s no fault of Weiner’s.

KitePowell explained that at its core, Burgert Brothers was a commercial photography firm.

Because of the time in history, their clients were either white or Latin.

“For Kite-Powell, there’s one part of Tampa history missing from the book—but it’s no fault of Weiner’s.”

“There are definitely some Burgert Brother photographs that do show Black-owned businesses, and they’re incredible, and themselves are so important because there are so few photographs that document Black American history,” Kite-Powell explained. “So if there’s a failing of the Burgerts—and again, it’s not even them, it’s the world that they lived in— it’s that we don’t see the same documentation continued on page 37

And we’d love to love to see it someday.”

In that sense, Kite-Powell is right.

Proportionally to the Black population throughout local history, there just aren’t a lot of surviving Burgert Brothers that capture Black life in Tampa. Yes, there are photos from gatherings at the “Negro Ministerial Alliance” and scenes from classrooms at Blake High, Booker T. Middle School and Darby Elementary, but the Burgert photos are of life inside (Weiner’s book, for its part, doesn’t include photos of people because of the focus on

recreating photos of structures past). In fact, one of the few structural photos in HCPLC’s Burgert archives is a 1930 photo from the dedication of the Tampa Negro Hospital on 1615 Lamar Ave. There are people in the photo, which would exclude it from Weiner’s new book, but the organization of the folks—Black guests on the right side of the porch, white ones on the left—speaks volumes about the era the Burgerts were working in.

Weiner’s hope for the book is that maybe in 50 years, someone will pick it up, see what the Burgerts did, what he tried to do and then do it again themselves. But as Tampa gets a chance to celebrate its history with this essential new book, Weiner has also inadvertently opened the door for someone to come in and find what Kite-Powell described as that missing piece. Thanks to this book, maybe that’ll happen sooner than we think.

This Clearwater strip club is now also a gallery for erotic art.

He figured there was no way real artists would want to show their work in a strip club.

“I’ve struggled for 11 years with people not being able to look past this place as a gentlemen’s club,” De Zago told CL. But as it turns out, quite a few artists were interested. When De Zago’s friend Nikko Lalloo posted about the club to “Artists of Tampa Bay” on Facebook, he got about 40 replies within 12 hours.

It was enough to encourage De Zago to start his own Facebook groups for artists interested in showing their work at his club. “The Art of Angels” Facebook group now has over 100 artist members.

On Friday, Sept. 11, 2020 Angels Nude hosted its first art opening. “When we put on our first show, we had like 80 people here,” De Zago told CL. “It was amazing. It was such a good night. It instilled me with the belief that we can overcome COVID.” De Zago followed it up with “Expressions of Desire” in November. This February, the club premieres “Blush: The Evolution of Innocence,” curated by De Zago, M’ria Swire, John Gascot, Charlie Krusac and Evelyn Dufner. De Zago hopes to rotate the art every two months like other galleries. Thus far, he says they’ve sold about 30% of the artwork at each exhibit—85% of that money goes to the artist, 10% to whoever

sold it, and 5% to charity. This month’s charity is John Gascot’s Diversity Arts.

“I will sell the shit out of this artwork because it’s going to a good cause,” says De Zago. “And if the people who are in this gallery promote the place, any increase in business is something that I cannot express to you how much I’d appreciate it. That’s it.

If these organizations do something positive with this money, and I have the means to be able to create it, that does something for me that goes far beyond the money that the club could be making from it. I would want to donate it anyway.”

Being surrounded by artists these past few months seems to have infused De Zago with creative energy. He’s already thinking of more artful ways to entertain his current patrons and discover new clientele. He recently added burlesque to the club’s entertainment offerings in conjunction with the art openings. And he’s considering adding erotic poetry, live music, fashion shows, figure drawing sessions, and adult-style paint and sip events in the future.

“I’m trying to bring more to this place than just a gentlemen’s club,” says De Zago. “Imagine the old French salons where artists and philosophers would get together and talk about ideas.

I would love to have something like that on a Monday for a couple hours.”

The walls are covered in exquisite figure art and fine art photography from artists whose work I’m used to seeing in local bars, restaurants, art centers, and galleries. Walking around the space, listening to De Zago talk about the art, I can tell he’s really into it. He shows me an entire room full of Jose Gomez’ sensual portraits, talks up Charlie Krusac’s fine art photography, and shares his appreciation for M’ria Swire and Evelyn Dufner’s depictions of the female form.

A strip club may seem like an unusual place to see art, but De Zago sees it differently. To him, a good strip tease is performance art. He still remembers the first time he went to a strip club in New York City. “This place had like 60 girls during the week and 100 some girls over the weekend,” De Zago told Creative Loafing Tampa. “They came from all over the place. They were all gorgeous and well out of reach for me.

But of course I was 18, so looking back, I kind of chuckle. I was sitting side stage—this woman is dancing in front of me, and I am mesmerized…

She was wearing something similar to a gown, and the way it flowed, and the way she danced, it was just beautiful…To me it wasn’t sexual. It was art. And even at 18 years old, with raging hormones and everything else, it was art…And that happened every time I went to a gentlemen’s club….Fast forward and I’m 43 now, and I still look at it that way.”

Why keeping each other company is more important than ever.

T

he kid and I started at Clearwater Lake, on the southern end of Ocala National Forest, packs busting with gear, water, and food. We planned a week-long trek to Rodman Dam, 70 miles north, a classic leg of the Florida Trail.

“I’ll give that trip three days,” my mom said to my wife as they pulled away, forecasting like the witches in ‘Macbeth.’”

The goal for day one was Alexander Springs, 11 miles away. Using the Florida Trail guide, I had mapped out a string of campsites, facilities, and cool sites to see. I organized like a parent in desperate need of control. I set up this hike because nothing else was working.

During the pandemic, a national poll reports, seven out of 10 teenagers struggle with mental health.

Adolescent depression has spiked 20%. In addition to the 2.7 million lives lost, mostly elderly, COVID-19 has taken its toll on the emotional well-being of our young. My kid is no exception.

He graduated from high school two years ago, and after a hiatus, started college. The pandemic led to online teaching, but he did not connect with remote learning, so he took an academic leave. He moved back home, under the condition that he find a job. But work did not happen, and the kid fell into a funk. Which leads to this hike.

Long before Xanax or Sigmund Freud’s analytic hour, people managed their demons with a walk in the woods.

Our trek covered the choicest stretch of the Florida Trail. First laid out in 1966, the Clearwater Lake leg represents the symbolic core of what is now a very long path—a national and scenic trail, stretching from Pensacola down to Big Cypress in the ‘Glades.

Day one took us up and down relic dunes, across our state’s unexpected desert habitat, then into a cypress forest near Alexander Springs.

Around 5 p.m., a fellow hiker with radar warned, a storm would hit. We double-timed to the Alex Springs recreation area, where we could cook in a shelter, maybe wait out the rain before making camp. The plan worked. In the picnic area, I heated some instant potatoes, a pouch of Keto broccoli, and leftover brats that the kid pulled from the depths of his pack. Dinner gave us a chance to plan. We agreed to keep our gear dry and let our persons soak.

The kid secured his electronics then stripped down to his shorts and hiking boots. We backtracked 10 minutes, to a campsite right off the trail. I managed to set up my brother’s tent (for the first time) in a dark rain. We survived the first night, warm and dry. By day two, however, I knew we had to adjust.

We agreed to cut our pace in half. That morning, the kid soaked his blistered feet in the 72-degree spring. We re-packed our stuff, which had dried out, and after a little first aid, hit the trail again.

Water is always a concern on a Florida hike. Even though our state gets a foot more annual precipitation than Seattle, rain sieves straight through the sandy soil. I did not want a dry camp. As the one holding the map, I insisted we reach Buck Lake, five miles past Alexander Springs. By 3 p.m., however, the kid’s patience flagged. His feet hurt.

His knees ached. He was miserable.

As we passed a muckish prairie, just beyond US-19, he asked “is that Buck Lake?” It was not.

We reached a second prairie, not much more than brackish sludge between the sedge and Jeep tracks. The kid insisted we stop. “Here’s your lake,” he said.

We pitched our tents, collected firewood, and I gathered water. I filled every piece of cookware we had at the prairie, filtering particulates then double boiling for safety. The kid heated some ramen and teriyaki jerk for us to share. As night fell, a cold front moved in. We fought back the chill with a fat fire from pine limbs.

The kid and I (to be honest) do not always get along. Though nearing 20, he still has a teenager’s personality—somewhere between tender and tough, stuffed animals and “fuck yous.”

My default to the inevitable affronts is sarcasm, which as the parenting guides tell you, succeeds only in alienating a late adolescent. It was nice to have this campfire in the woods. Later that night, the trip unraveled, just as my mom predicted.

The 2 a.m. cold triggered an asthma attack. Trail grit had clogged up the kid’s inhaler. I called my wife, asking for help. “Run warm water through it,” she said. So I unzipped my sleeping bag, lit the stove, and poured the dregs of our twice-filtered water into the frigid cook pot. Even after a makeshift rinse, the inhaler would not work.

The next morning, we finalized our non-decision. We could either hoof back to US-19 (where

likely feel more urgent—but it’s a solid genre effort that fans of cut classics like “Witchfinder General” should love.

A Ghost Waits

★★★½

n Monday, state data showed somewhat promising coronavirus numbers (just 96 dead reported Sunday, the lowest single day total since Dec. 27 when 77 were reported dead). Florida also added just north of 61,000 new vaccinations, bringing the total of vaccinated Flordians to 2.3 million. And while Hillsborough fails to meet the World Health Organization’s recommended positivity rate of 5% (Hillsborough’s is 7%) Pinellas’ rate hit the 5% mark in Monday’s report. Still, 993 new cases were added in Tampa Bay, plus two deaths.

With just 21% of local ICU beds available, there are still hundreds of reasons to stay home this weekend. Here are some streaming movies to help you do just that.

when witch hunters were allowed to detain and torture anyone so accused—is possibly his best-looking film to date.

Seriously, “The Reckoning” is packed with some of the most gorgeous cinematography to ever grace his work, including a wonderfully-extended opening sequence packed with backstory and rich character development.

If you’re a longtime Marshall fan (like me), you know he isn’t shy when it comes to the gory stuff, and “The Reckoning” is no exception. Whether focusing on the decomposing victims of bubonic plague or better still, ceding centerstage to the fantastic Sean Pertwee as the formidable witch hunter supreme John Moorcroft, Marshall also has made one of his goriest films yet. Moorcroft’s meticulous approach to excising a confession of witchcraft, which can last days and utilize an array of horrific medieval implements, is something to behold.

Of course, none of this would matter without a sympathetic and strong central heroine, which is where Charlotte Kirk comes in. Kirk, who cowrote the script, plays Grace Haverstock, whose own mother was burned alive by Moorcroft when Grace was but a girl. Kirk gives her all to the performance, and it works. “The Reckoning” isn’t perfect—it could lose about 15 minutes and

★★★★ 110 minutes, streaming First things first, I’d like to welcome Neil Marshall back, given that it has been too long—12 years to be exact—since the writer/ director responsible for “Dog Soldiers,” “The Descent” and “Doomsday” last made a genre film worth championing.Secondly, I’m here to tell you that not only is Marshall back with a vengeance, but his latest—“The Reckoning,” a gruesome and gritty tale set during the 1600s

80 minutes, streaming I’m going to blame COVID-19 for my initial reaction upon first viewing “A Ghost Waits,” a new romantic horror-comedy from director Adam Stovall. I first screened “A Ghost Waits” way back in early October when the film premiered as part of the Screamfest film festival. Stovall’s movie had already taken the top three honors at Frightfest 2020, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for co-star and co-writer MacLeod Andrews. I fired up my laptop and immediately felt ‘Meh.’ At first, I wondered if it might be because “A Ghost Waits” is shot in blackand-white. Then I wondered if I was expecting something scarier. Finally, I decided that given the current state of world affairs, I just wasn’t in the mood for an old-timey supernatural love story.

Jump forward four months, and I decided to give “A Ghost Waits” a second chance, which made all the difference. I noticed jokes that I had missed the first time around. I picked up on subtle nods to classic films. And I fell under the spell cast by Andrews, as Jack, a lowly handyman who feels lost in life and Muriel (Natalie Walker), a ghost who feels stuck haunting the same two-story home by herself for decades on end. “A Ghost Waits” owes a great debt to “Beetlejuice,” both in style and substance, but it’s not ripping off a beloved property, merely building on many of the same themes.

If anything, I think the perfect description is this: Imagine if Kevin Smith had made “Beetlejuice” as a two-person character study instead of “Clerks,” but without the vulgar humor and litany of pop culture shout outs. That to me is “A Ghost Waits,” in a nutshell. It’s a sweet, delightful story of two souls navigating the horrors of life and afterlife without an anchor, until they meet cute and realize they were meant to be.

Let Him Go

★★★ 113 minutes, streaming, Blu-Ray and DVD Writer-director Thomas Bezucha (“The Family Stone”) delivers a good, old-fashioned thriller that feels unearthed from cinema’s simpler time with “Let Him Go,” a slow-boil family drama that explodes with violence in its third act. The film involves two grandparents who go to extreme lengths to protect their only grandchild from a ferocious family of ne’er-do-wells in Big Sky country.

“Let Him Go” is notable for its two stars, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, and both iconic actors deliver. Lane, in particular, turns in a fierce performance as Margaret Blackledge that stands tall as some of her best screen work to date. Costner, who plays George Blackledge, takes a much more low-key approach to his southwestern retired lawman of few words.

His simmering emotion and the way he slowly releases steam is reminiscent of his work in 1993’s “A Perfect World.”

5 Bucs that need to be re-signed immediately.

o the Bucs won the Super Bowl. It’s fun, it’s great, and they had that boat parade where a bunch of people were packed onto the Riverwalk while not wearing masks, probably increasing Tampa’s COVID-19 numbers exponentially.

Fun stuff, right? Let’s get into some notso-fun stuff. Free agents. The Bucs are going to have plenty of them from this championship roster, and they won’t be able to re-sign all of them. The idea of simply “running it back” with the team they had is nice, but probably unrealistic, especially if Tampa Bay wants to avoid the salary cap problems currently plaguing the Saints payroll back-loaded with contracts.

Here are the five guys the Bucs probably need to re-sign if they want to try to make a run at repeating as Super Bowl champs.

Lavonte David I know, ranking David this low seems criminal for a guy who is probably top-two at his position, but with David’s age he probably won’t be getting the huge contract that Godwin and Barrett will likely receive. He’s a solid middle linebacker whose value was never on display more than in the Super Bowl, where he was flying all over the field and making plays seemingly at least once every drive. As one of the longest tenured Bucs on the roster, David provides a locker room presence that would be incredibly difficult to replace.

But, as with most guys on Super Bowl teams, David seems like another guy that will likely be re-signed. However, there is a chance that David tests free agency a little more than his teammates as there haven’t been any reports about David going one way or the other in regards to his status as a Buc. He could be targeted by linebacker-needy teams like the Browns or the Eagles, especially if either of those teams end up unloading some big contracts on their

Chris Godwin Godwin is one of the most underrated receivers in the NFL. He blocks like a tight end, he runs excellent routes, and he hardly ever drops targets. He’s the dependable option a guy like Brady needs, especially in the Bucs’ vertical-style offense. If the Bucs are serious about competing next year, Godwin is the no. 1 guy they need to bring back. He’s probably the most important cog in the offense not named Brady or Evans. So no matter what the price, they need to bring him back. The good news is that Godwin seems very happy in Tampa, and a deal should be reached sometime soon. If that doesn’t work out, they can always franchise tag him and try to re-sign him to a bigger contract extension next offseason.

Shaquil Barrett Now, Barrett is probably going to be the most expensive of these five names because of his incredible value as an edge rusher. Other than QBs, pass rushers are probably the most valued commodity in the NFL, and rightfully so. If you look at the best defenses in the NFL, most of them have at least two guys who can cause a lot of problems for opposing offenses by getting after the quarterback. The Bucs had that this past season with Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq. Now the issue will be keeping Shaq around. But Barrett is another guy who seems incredibly happy to be playing in a Bucs uniform, even going so far as to say “I know there ain’t no place I’d rather be,” when asked about his upcoming free agency (I mean, did you see him in that Doug Williams jersey at the parade?). I think it’s safe to say the feeling is mutual, and a deal should be reached fairly quickly.

“Let’s get into some not-so-fun stuff.”

Ndamukong Suh The fact that Playoff Lenny and Antonio Brown are left off this list despite them both scoring touchdowns in the Super Bowl should show you just how big this free agency problem could be for the Bucs.

Rob Gronkowski This one is a bit more of a gimme. Gronk isn’t going anywhere. He came out of retirement to play with his buddy, he didn’t come out to go play for the Bengals. He’s almost a lock to return, and the good news here is that he probably will take a bit of a pay cut to help out the Bucs with their cap situation and allow a guy like Lavonte David to re-sign at his actual market value. But, that still doesn’t make Gronk any less important. He’s an elite blocker at the tight end position and he steps up in big games, as shown by his twotouchdown performance in the Super Bowl. His chemistry with Brady is evident on the field and in those weird sexual-tension-filled weekly videos they make every week. So, yeah. Gronk is important, but he’s a lock to return.

Suh may not put up the stats those other guys do, but he provides an invaluable presence on the Bucs’ defensive line as a run stuffer and veteran leader.

I genuinely believe that without Suh on the Bucs for the past couple of years, Vita Vea does not emerge as the powerhouse he is. Suh’s experience and intensity on the field would be missed, but for the Bucs it is going to be difficult to re-sign Suh at his current price. He made $8 million this season, and with Barrett and Godwin likely to get raises, it’d be really hard to make that same salary work. But, again, there’s something to be said for a player’s comfort in a situation, especially after winning the Super Bowl.

Tampa isn’t that bad of a place to live, and Florida doesn’t have a state income tax. So Suh might be willing to come back on another one-year deal for, say, half of his salary this year. Being in Tampa Bay gives the big guy another legitimate shot at a Super Bowl, and for a guy who played for the helpless and hapless Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins for most of his career, maybe he doesn’t want to go back to another terrible team.

Let’s hope not, at least.

Baynes’ existence

Toronto’s Australian center deserves Tampa’s audulation.

A

ron Baynes is not the most famous player in the NBA. For a Bucs comparison, he probably has as much name recognition as Cameron Brate. For serious basketball fans, Aron Baynes is that crazy Australian dude with a fan club on Twitter. He’s a solid, hard-working big man who can provide decent backup minutes to a contending team, but not someone who warrants intense scrutiny.

His season—much like the rest of the Raptors campaign—has started off pretty slow. His shooting numbers have taken an 11% drop, and his rebound numbers are slightly down, despite playing four more minutes per game. But that’s no problem for the @baynesfanclub Twitter page, which has close to 75,000 followers.

Sporting News says the page was started by an anonymous Boston Celtics fan back in 2019, back when Baynes was playing for the disappointing Celtics. Boston was experiencing something of an identity crisis, with a star point guard in Kyrie Irving who seemed uninterested in playing basketball by the end of the season.

Enter Baynes, a hard-working, well-liked center who keeps his head down and does his thing. He began his professional career in Europe, following a successful college career at Washington State. Baynes eventually latched onto the San Antonio Spurs in 2013, winning a ring in 2014 after a season filled with trips up and down from the Spurs’ G-League team,

the then-Austin Toros (now the Spurs). After a couple uneventful seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Baynes found himself in Boston. He spent a couple seasons in Beantown before the fan club started, and a legend was born, all because a Celtics fan loved Baynes’ demeanor on the bench and his hard-working play style.

Never mind that Baynes was let go by the Celtics and signed with the Suns the following season. The Twitter profile followed the bearded big man, changing the profile’s picture to one of Baynes in a Suns uniform.

Now? The profile is obsessed with the Raptors and Baynes’ performances now as a starter. The Twitter page’s username is “Unofficial tAronto Baynes Fan Club,” with its header being a screenshot from one of the recent Jurassic Park movies with Baynes’ face photoshopped over Chris Pratt’s while the center is surrounded by… well, Raptors.

Despite the emergence of Chris Boucher as an incredible option for the Raptors, Baynes has maintained his starting role through his gritty work inside (plus, as the Twitter account pointed out, Baynes outscored Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant in the Raptors-Nets matchup last week, leaving no mention of Durant’s weirdly limited playing time due to COVID restrictions). Hopefully his shooting numbers can return back to last year’s average, which was around 35% from deep.

At least he can depend on the BaynesFanClub.

On Monday, state data showed somewhat promising coronavirus numbers (just 96 dead reported Sunday, the lowest single day total since Dec. 27 when 77 deaths were reported).

Florida also added just north of 61,000 new vaccinations, bringing the total of vaccinated Flordians to 2.3 million. And while Hillsborough fails to meet the World Health Organization’s recommended positivity rate of 5% (Hillsborough’s is 7%) Pinellas’ rate hit the 5% mark in Monday’s report. Still, 993 new cases were added in Tampa Bay, plus two deaths. With just 21% of local ICU beds available, there are still hundreds of reasons to stay home this weekend, but the local live music scene is finding ways to try and stay on its feet. We’ve marked the gigs at venues that have joined a Tampa-based and city-recognized “Safe & Sound” initiative that pledges to strictly enforce limited capacity, mask wearing and social distancing—and tried our best to explain COVID-19 protocols at venues that not able to join Tampa’s “Safe & Sound” program.—Ray Roa

C Discord Theory w/Zach Short Four years ago, life was simpler: there were no masks, Ryan Adams was getting ready to headline Gasparilla Music Festival and his fans were still in the dark about his sleaziness. More important, at least in the Tampa Bay music scene, Discord Theory was born. In those four years, the punk band has continuously put out solid tunes including the 2020 singles “Stranded” and “What’s Done is Done”—the outfit even killed it it at GMF themselves last year. Guitarist and lush vocalist Zach Short opens the limited-capacity gig where advance tickets are recommended. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa) J.T. Brown Space cowboy J.T. Brown, hot off that fire single “Blood in the Water” with local emcee Mike Mass, is playing a solo show in Ybor City to kick off the weekend. According to the songwriter’s Facebook page you can expect “an evening of songs and storytelling” from the southern singer. The 21-and-up show is a seated event with seats at four top tables available for purchase. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay reached out to The Attic to see what additional COVID-19 protocols the venue is following, but have not heard back. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City) TobyMac w/Tauren Wells/We Are Messengers/Unspoken/more In October, Amalie Arena announced the return of the Mac. TobyMac (stylized “TobyMAC”). After taking some time off, initially due to the sudden death of his son Truett McKeehan last fall, TobyMac, seen as a legendary veteran of Christian music, found it in his soul to hit the road this past summer. Though he stuck to drive-in movie theaters for his last outing, it now seems that

TobyMac optimistic for 2021 to be a better, safer year for in-person and indoor shows.

That includes two concerts in downtown Tampa on Feb. 19-20, which appear to be the first shows at Amalie since the COVID-19 shutdown. Like he does every tour, he rolls through Tampa with an all-star lineup of mainly newer fellow Christian musicians. A press release for the “Hits Deep” tour announcement promises “socially distanced seating maps,” but it’s not clear exactly what those look like yet. The release adds that tour officials “will be working closely with both national and local health officials to meet or exceed the most current health and safety guidelines in each market.” (Amalie Arena, Tampa)—Ray Roa C Will Quinlan Will Quinlan, a staple in the Bay area music scene, has the perfect voice for that weekday to weekend transition, and he told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that his Friday night solo set at Ella’s will include “... lots of new stuff in the mix, sprinkled with a few of the old war horses and a select cover or two.”

Fingers crossed for cuts from the songwriter’s forthcoming solo album Articles of Redemption that could see a summertime release. The Americana singer is trying to get as many local musicians to contribute to the project as possible. After the solo album release, expect a new one from him with his band The Holy Slow Train which will include the amazing single “We Bastard Souls.” Grab a tissue, this one got me feeling some type of way. Seating is limited so make a reservation in advance if you want one.

C Jeremy Gloff Local singer-songwriter and pop star Jeremy Gloff is still working hard for his money, and for money he earns for others.

You can line his—and the community’s—pockets twice this month, too. The first chance is at this Saturday solo New World Brewery acoustic BBQ gig where Gloff will play one or two songs from each of his albums, which span 28 years.

Gloff is working on his 23rd LP—Burn It Up! Turn It Up! (stylized in all caps), featuring local favorites Louis Junior, Achilles the Conqueror and Amber Lynn Nicol—and you might hear stuff from it at Jeremy’s other New World gig, a Feb. 27 “Fighting Hunger for Harry” benefiting Feeding Tampa Bay. Gloff is that nonprofit’s volunteer supervisor for the Trinity Cafe program, but the benefit was organized by musician Melissa Grady and her band Same Day Delivery Orchestra. Local singers joining the cause include John Nowicki, J.T. Brown, and Buck Sands who are all backed by a massive all-star band. (New World Brewery, Tampa)

outside a venue box and into somebody’s front yard with its Lawncert series. Head towards South Seminole Heights’ Ignacio Haya Linear Park this weekend to see a trio— Tucker Sody, Vinny Svoboda, and Jordan Garno, who make up the house band at Ybor City’s Five 5 Tampa studio—take the elevated stage. “The performances will be held from an elevated bridge that allows concertgoers to walk up freely, maintain social distancing, and safely enjoy some live music next to the beautiful riverside park,” the event page states. Off the Dome: Jon Ditty open mic If you have rhymes to share or just want to check out some local hip-hop, then Off the Dome is for you. Best of the Bay-winning emcee Jon Ditty hosts the weekly open mic, which is far from average. The night boasts “numerous rap games and exercises that seek to improve mental sharpness and cunning on-the-spot” while performing over various mainstream and experimental tracks. There are also three spots available for pre-written performances, first come first serve.

I’m a gay guy living in New York in his late twenties. My boyfriend has really been emotionally impacted by the pandemic having been a frontline worker. I think he is suffering from some mild depression or at the very least some intense anxiety, so I just want to preface this by saying I completely sympathize with what he’s going through.
