he Tampa Tiger Bay Club (TBC) will host Tampa Bay Rays President Brian Auld on Friday to discuss the proposal to share the team with Montreal. Auld will speak during TBC’s noon luncheon event at the Cuban Club in Ybor City. The event is open to the public but requires reserving a seat at Tiger Bay Club’s website. Only TBC members can ask questions of Auld.

Auld is in his 16th season with the Rays and his seventh as team president. He and the Rays’ other President Matt Silverman lead the club’s operations internally and externally, including the proposal to build new home ballparks in Tampa Bay and Montreal, dividing home games between the two cities.

Auld spoke in October at Cafe Con Tampa, “pushing” the split-city baseball team idea, Bay News 9 reported, speaking about low attendance at Tropicana Field being a major concern in keeping the Rays in Tampa Bay. However, many Rays fans were skeptical during the Cafe Con Leche event.

“It really is disheartening because it really should be an exciting time,” Matt Neuhausen, long time Rays fan told BN9. “I think a lot of fans are feeling unsure and feeling anxious about this because it isn’t putting the fans first.”

While the Tampa Bay Times has also pushed the idea of a tax-payer funded baseball stadium moving to Tampa (without disclosing its ties to developers who might benefit), Montreal made a bold statement about not paying taxes to fund a baseball stadium. The nonprofit Canadian Taxpayers Federation CTF bought a billboard right next to Tropicana Stadium that read, “Dear Rays, Montreal won’t pay for your new stadium.”

Nationwide, White and Asian renters typically spend 28.6% and 26% of their incomes on rent, respectively, while Black people usually spend 34% of their income and Latinx renters spend 32.1%, according to Zillow.

Orlando is the least affordable market for Latinx households, costing 42% of their income.

Even so, that 42% burden is still lower than what Black households spend in San Diego, Sacramento and San Francisco.

s Tampa Bay rents skyrocket to some of the highest prices in the nation, renters are fed up and are organizing to address the problems they face. On Thursday, Nov. 11, the St. Petersburg People’s Council will gather at South St. Pete’s Manhattan Casino at 6 p.m. to air their grievances, and make plans on how to address them (a virtual option is also available).

“We are meeting to talk about declaring a state of emergency on housing in St. Petersburg to allow residents the right to vote on rent caps and rent freezes,” St. Petersburg Tenant Union (SPTU) wrote in an announcement.

Rents in St. Petersburg have spiked 46% in just the past five years, according to WFTS. Representatives from the People’s Council say that if the City of St. Petersburg were to declare a housing crisis, it would afford the group an opportunity to place rent control on a ballot referendum. If the referendum were to pass, it could possibly allow for certain rent protections that have been put in place in other cities.

While a Florida law against pricing controls adds a hurdle to the union’s goal, Seattle City Council got a major win for renters despite similar Washington state laws against rent control.

In September, Seattle passed a law requiring landlords to give tenants 180 days’ notice before raising rents, and to pay relocation expenses to low-income tenants who move in response to rent hikes.

This month, Minneapolis—a city where rent control laws must also gain approval through a citywide referendum vote—passed a form of rent control that limits rent increase to no more than 3% per year. SPTU members think St. Petersburg could help protect renters in similar ways. But their ultimate goal is guaranteed housing for all in St. Pete, because the group sees housing as a human right.

“We need guaranteed housing for the most vulnerable in our city and the city has all the resources to provide that,” SPTU member Karla Correa told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “We’re tired of excuses, when there’s a will, there’s a way.”

DeSantis ramps up rhetoric ahead of re-election campaign.

ov. Ron DeSantis plans to ask lawmakers for more “election integrity reforms” during next year’s legislative session, as he has resisted pressure from within the Republican Party to audit the 2020 elections.

During a campaign-style event on Nov. 3 in West Palm Beach, DeSantis said he will build on controversial election changes approved in April by the GOP-controlled Legislature. He said he will ask lawmakers during the 2022 session to create and staff a state-level office that would investigate and prosecute election-related crimes.

“If someone’s ballot harvesting, you report it to these people (in the proposed new office) and this is their sole job,” DeSantis said, referring to a practice that involves people collecting and delivering ballots for other voters.

“You know, some of these counties, some of them will do the cases,” DeSantis continued.

“But that’s not their expertise. They’ve got all these other crimes that they have to deal with.

So, by the time it happens, the election is already over. So, it’s not necessary. And some just don’t want to deal with it at all. So, now there’ll be specialists that are going to understand what’s legal, what’s not legal. They’re going to have the ability to investigate any crimes involving the election, and I think that’s going to be something that’s very, very important.”

DeSantis announced the plans as the law passed in April faces a series of legal challenges.

Among other things, the law made it harder to cast ballots by mail, required voters to request mail-in ballots more frequently than in the past, added restrictions to drop boxes --- where voters can drop off completed ballots --- and sought to prevent ballot harvesting.

Opponents contend the law is designed to suppress voting by groups such as AfricanAmericans, who vote heavily for Democrats. The legal challenges are pending in federal court.

DeSantis also announced the plans as he faces pressure in some Florida Republican circles to review the 2020 election for possible illegalities.

The Lake County Republican Party, for example, has approved a resolution calling for a full audit of the 2020 elections. Also, conservative operative Roger Stone, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, said on social media he would consider running for governor in 2022 if DeSantis continues to refuse to order an audit.

“If Florida governor Ron DeSantis does not order an audit of the 2020 election to expose the fact that there are over 1 million phantom voters on the Florida voter rolls in the

Sunshine state, I may be forced to seek the Libertarian Party nomination for governor (of) Florida in 2022,” Stone posted on the socialnetworking service Gab. Last month, Florida Secretary of State Laurel Lee told lawmakers the state has already conducted an audit of the 2020 elections. Trump easily won in 2020 in Florida, though he lost nationally to Democrat Joe Biden.

“We have already completed an audit of all 67 counties,” Lee told the Senate Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development Appropriations Subcommittee on Oct. 13. “And that audit demonstrated an

In a 25-page decision, Administrative Law Judge Brian Newman upheld the emergency rule, which, in part, said decisions to opt out of student mask requirements are at the “sole discretion” of parents or guardians. He wrote that the school boards “failed to prove that the emergency rule opt-out provisions facilitate the spread of COVID-19 in schools.”

“On the contrary, the evidence admitted in this case established that the emergency rule opt-out provisions strike the right balance by ensuring that the protocols that govern the control of COVID-19 in schools go no further than what is required to keep children safe and in school,” Newman wrote.

Attorneys for the school boards argued during a two-day hearing last month that the health department improperly skirted normal rulemaking processes when it issued the Sept. 22 emergency rule. But Newman wrote that the department acted within its authority when it issued the rule.

“The preamble to the emergency rule sets out a facially adequate factual basis for emergency rulemaking. In addition, the evidence presented justifies emergency rulemaking,” the order said.

Newman listed a number of shifting COVID19 policies by school districts that filed the challenge.

“These policy pivots are not recited to criticize the school boards; COVID-19 policies should be revisited frequently and adapted to the latest COVID-19 case data. But respondent (the health department) must be just as nimble when adopting statewide COVID-19 protocols,” Newman wrote.

The judge, for example, cited the Leon County School Board’s recent adoption of a policy allowing parents to opt-out of student mask requirements, calling it an “indication that such policies are safe.”

The Department of Health rule carried out a July 30 executive order by DeSantis that was aimed at preventing mask mandates. The department issued an initial rule Aug. 6 and a revised --- and strengthened --- version Sept.

22 The rule served as a basis for the state Department of Education financially penalizing districts that required students to wear masks.

The Sept. 22 rule also allowed children to attend school if they have been exposed to COVID-19 but are asymptomatic, preventing districts from requiring quarantines for those students. That issue was not in the Aug. 6 version of the rule.

Newman wrote Friday that the school boards failed to prove that giving parents opt-out control would lead to more children spreading the virus.

“As to whether the emergency rule opt-out provisions make it more likely that children will spread COVID-19 to others, that too was unproven,” he wrote. “The emergency rule requires sick children to stay home. It is extremely rare for asymptomatic people to spread COVID-19 and children are otherwise inefficient transmitters of the ... virus.”

While the case moved forward, some of the districts scaled back or eliminated mask requirements as COVID-19 cases in the state dropped. For example, the Duval County and Orange County districts decided to allow parents to opt their children out of wearing masks.—Ryan Dailey

Bad, getting worse

Virginians didn’t go red because they despise child tax credits.

By Jeffrey C. Billman etc. There’s not much Democrats can do to curb their enthusiasm, particularly when Dems are in power and become the focus for grievances.

The bigger problem for Democrats is that they gave back anti-Trump swing voters Joe Biden won last year. The Biden coalition relied on swaying moderate, educated white suburbanites along with juicing turnout from the party’s base of urban liberals and people of color, while scraping together just enough rural voters to win Rust Belt states.

In Virginia, swing voters broke hard against the party in power. Put simply, they weren’t happy with the status quo. There are several obvious explanations: The economy languished in the third quarter as COVID’s delta wave wreaked havoc; ironically, the data show that Biden paid a political price for Republicans’ refusal to get a vaccine. Beginning with the botched Afghanistan withdrawal, the months preceding the election offered a string of hits on Biden’s competence; Congress’ inability to get his signature legislation across the finish line didn’t help.

But as much as pundits like to analyze these tea leaves and ascribe blame for losses, the reality of American politics is that parties that hold the White House lose races. Since 1934, the president’s party has gained House seats in the midterms only three times, all under special circumstances: the Great Depression (1934), Bill Clinton’s impeachment (1998), and post 9/11 (2002). In other words, Democrats should assume that the midterms will be brutal, and there’s nothing they can do about it.

So rather than “moving to the center” in the name of unlikely self-preservation, they’d be better served by locking in as much as they can before Republicans reclaim the majority and halt progress on climate change, health care, and wealth inequality. Then spend the next two years bragging about what you accomplished (and Republicans didn’t) in every corner of the country. Do that, and if the economy is still growing, you’ll win in 2024.

But if Democrats learn the wrong lesson from last week—the lesson the Beltway media thinks they should—and the party’s moderates block or further water down the reconciliation package after getting their way on the infrastructure deal, what story will Democrats have to tell?

he worst thing about Terry McAuliffe’s loss wasn’t the fusillade of journalists churning out pre-writes of Democrats’ midterm obituaries, or the schizophrenic New York Times editorial that accused the party of going too far left while simultaneously endorsing its policy goals, or even the fact that Republicans now have evidence that going full knuckle-dragger on COVID and critical race theory turns out their voters no less than Build the Wall did in 2016.

It’s that Democrats, being Democrats, have a pathological ability to learn the wrong lesson from their defeats, which means they’re almost certain to take a bad situation and make it worse by trying to fix it in all the wrong ways. It took all of four days, in fact, for House Dems to decouple the infrastructure and reconciliation bills after binding them for months; now progressives are at the mercy of Democratic moderates who feel vindicated by last week’s results.

Sigh.

There are, of course, lessons to be learned from the Virginia debacle (and the close call in New Jersey). One is that Democrats need a better messaging strategy—any messaging strategy, really. The second? Shit happens, so make hay while the sun shines.

But the wrong lesson, by which I mean the one they’ll take to heart, is that voters are very concerned about Big Government, so they should slow things down.

But paid family leave, lower Medicare drug prices, expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies, child tax credits, universal pre-K, and investing in sustainable energy all poll through the stratosphere. So does taxing billionaires and corporations.

The truth is that Virginians didn’t vote against McAuliffe because they despise child tax credits. As much as we delude ourselves, politics become more and more detached from policy every year. Virginia’s dark-red counties wouldn’t have voted differently if the reconciliation bill began its legislative journey at half the price tag. Politics, especially but not exclusively at the base level, is a demonstration of cultural values—a reflection of how we see ourselves.

After Trump’s election, Democrats showed up en masse, motivated by the threats Trump posed to democratic norms, human rights, and our Twitter feeds. Now it’s the Republican base’s turn. They, too, see themselves as defending their values against forces reordering the world they know—threats real, imagined, and exaggerated: pandemic mandates, cancel culture, critical race theory, the “stolen” election, Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ books in school libraries,

But the Republicans also campaigned on issues that resonated, including the notion—decoupled from reality, but effective regardless—that schools are teaching white kids that they’re bad people. As CRT was redefined to include anything involving diversity, equity, and inclusion—or whatever made white people feel weird—the astroturf outrage at school board meetings across the country convinced a lot of white parents that something untoward was happening. No parent wants their child to be demonized in school; if you’re told often enough that an accurate, contextual rendering of American history demonizes your child, you’re liable to believe it.

Democrats never had an answer. They also didn’t know how to campaign on what they’d accomplished with the power voters had given them: 220 million vaccines delivered and 5 million jobs added to the economy in less than 10 months, yet fewer than a third of voters think the country is on the right track.

Instead, McAuliffe campaigned against the ghost of Donald Trump, trying to drive up turnout in Northern Virginia. But he ignored rural Virginia and paid dearly for it. (The first rule of politics: People won’t vote for you if you don’t ask them to.)

DAMN IT, TERRY: There are lessons to be learned from McAuliffe’s Virginia debacle.

ephas Gilbert—who served Jamaican food, aloe shakes, and holistic health advice (whether you wanted it or not) in Ybor City for almost 40 years—will open yet another Tampa business sometime in 2022. Although Gilbert, who’s 69 or 70 years old, has been focusing on organic farming since his smoothie stand closed in late 2020, his new hobby won’t deter him from this next endeavor. This time around, Gilbert will combine his passion for farming with his love for sharing health advice with customers face-to-face.

His main priority now is planting a variety of fruits and herbs so that when the time comes to open his new smoothie stand and herbal shop next year, everything for sale will have been grown by his own two hands—talk about farm-to-table freshness. When Creative Loafing Tampa Bay called Cephas up to get details on his new enterprise, there was a loud video blaring in the background. Gilbert went to turn it down, and soon clarified that he was watching a YouTube video to learn how to grow avocados.

“I learn a lot of things from YouTube, man,” Gilbert explains to CL. “Right now I’m focusing on just planting everything. Cinnamon, turmeric, lemongrass, soursop— I’m learning how to grow mangos from YouTube too.”

This time, he strives for balance between being inside running his business and being under the sun, tending to his 8-acre organic farm in southeast Tampa. In June, Gilbert told Paul Guzzo he was diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency last year, and started the farm to help him get more sunshine.

The Cephas Hot Spot Facebook explains that organic farming comes naturally to Gilbert, as he helped his grandfather on the family farm when he was a child in Jamaica. Machete in hand, Gilbert is farming the same way his grandfather did back on the island—minus the YouTube videos of course.

“I want to grow everything—all different types of tropical plants and herbs,” Gilbert says. “I have aloe and sugarcane growing too, everything to support people’s health—I believe in health.” He says he has help on the farm sometimes, but the majority of work is done by himself.

In the beginning of 2020 Gilbert decided he needed to downsize. So after 38 years of dishing out popular Jamaican cuisine, he closed his 4th Avenue restaurant and opened a smoothie stand out of Tequila’s on Ybor’s bustling 7th Avenue. But when that space was purchased in late 2020, both Tequila’s and Cephas’ new endeavour quickly closed. This time around, Gilbert wants a building all to himself.

Stars collide

The joy of discovery, and Super Mario.

T

here is a lack of respect for the origin, even though connecting to it is what will give us power. Perhaps this disdain comes from fear. Many are afraid of what they don’t know and what lacks certainty. What can be trusted is what can be controlled, planned, measured. There is enough science to back up some understanding of how the universe was created but there are gaps in knowledge. This is where we have plot holes in creation.

This is where imagination comes in.

Imagination fills the holes in this plot like a sower. A gardener who tends to this plot like land, lovingly sowing seeds then covering them.

No wonder we cannot see what has been planted until significant growth has taken place. Much like unlocking necessary tools and weapons when playing a video game.

I’ve been finding much inspiration from Super Mario. From that ominous “duh-nuhnuh-nuh-nuh-nah” track playing in my mind when I encounter a Koopa-like obstacle to recognizing how each ascent into the air is accompanied with a raised power fist, the game has become a prevalent reference for how life is designed. I’ve felt both existential despair and profound gratitude when I consider that everything is all a part of a highly intentional grid, a system with a creator(s). It depends on where I’m coming from.

When I feel powerless, I experience despair.

When I feel empowered, I am happy. It’s that simple. Simple as a deceptively ordinary guy making it through a world that appears to be built to stop him. Making it through means winning. Winning requires the interaction of the system and a game player. A player who is willing to learn from their mistakes, daring enough to take risks and committed to reach the end. A system without a human attempting to beat it, has no point.

I did not intend to write the poem to make a case for video games. I wrote it to celebrate the joy of discovery. While I was listening to an artist, I made a connection between their music and how Mario powering up with a star is consistent with the workings of our universe.

After all, Mario is a star in his own right. So rather than passively becoming empowered by a higher force, it is a moment of two stars colliding, a superpower formed from union.

I think sometimes there is a sense of doom when imagining the collision of stars. The end of the world, some may fear. But when I remember that the star that I take into myself is just my Self, there is nothing to be afraid of. We are simply creating a new world together, plotting points in this grid like constellations.

With some, she’s more successful than others.

Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry and Ma Dong-seok, as Kingo, Phastos and Gilgamesh, shine brightest. Lia McHugh’s pint-sized Sprite is fun. Salma Hayek’s Ajak is solid as the core leader. But Gemma Chan’s Sersi and Richard Madden’s Ikaris feel flat throughout; Angelina Jolie’s Thena sadly leaves room for improvement; and poor Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari and Barry Keoghan’s Druig never achieve any meaningful connection.

I almost wish Marvel has taken a bigger risk and introduced the “Eternals” in episodic fashion on the Disney+ streaming platform before using a feature film to showcase their efforts as a collective to save Earth from annihilation.

Casual fans will likely leave the theater still chuckling at the comic timing of Harish Patel as Karun, a personal valet to Kingo, and longtime hardcore nerds will be elated at the inclusion of

Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, a well-known name in comics lore, who gets his own mid-credits sequence to cement his character’s upcoming arc.

If you have gone to the theater to see every other MCU entry to date, “Eternals” should not be the exception. This is not a bad movie, at all. If I had to compare, I would equate “Eternals” with “Iron Man 2,” which remains memorable solely for introducing Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff to the pre-Avengers fold.

Similarly, “Eternals” earns its place in the MCU more for the potential storylines it teases and less for the epic throwdowns and grave dangers that proceeded it in better origin stories.

College players we’d like to see on the Bucs next year.

he trade deadline has come and gone, and the Bucs didn’t make any moves to improve their beat-up secondary. Whether you agree with this decision or not, at the very least the Bucs didn’t have to give anything away, and the team’s done a great job of hanging onto most of its picks throughout the Brady era. With last week being a bye, let’s play GM, think about a draft and take a look at the five best fits for the Bucs coming out of college?

Jarrett Patterson, C, Notre Dame The Bucs’ current starting center Ryan Jensen has been great in his time here, and with his impending free agency he’ll certainly be difficult to replace, especially considering how important it is to keep Brady upright and protected. Enter Patterson, the 6-foot 5-inch interior lineman out of Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish has been producing quality interior offensive linemen for years now, including All-Pros Zach Martin and Quinton Nelson. Hopefully Patterson can join that list and continue the Bucs’ stellar offensive line play for years to come.

Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida The Bucs’ secondary struggles have been well-documented this season, so going with a cornerback in the first round wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world. Tampa Bay clearly lacks depth at that position, and even its starters aren’t exactly top-notch. Elam looks to be a physical presence on the outside at 6-foot2-inches, and he moves extremely well for someone of that size. The biggest thing the Bucs secondary seems to struggle with is keeping up with the speed guys, so Elam could bring some of that while maintaining the

Jermayne Lole, DL, Arizona State Nose tackle Vita Vea certainly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but defensive end Ndamukong Suh might be. Suh has been just what the Bucs’ interior line had needed over the past three years, helping Vea with his development and establishing a tremendously dominant culture when it comes to

stopping the run. But, Suh’s on a one-year deal and going on 35 years old. With the birth of twins this past year—he and his wife’s first children—he might be done after 2021. Lole would certainly be an excellent replacement. He was ranked as one of the best defensive tackles against the run in 2019 and 2020, and is even developing as a pass rusher. Lole may not be a household name, but the Bucs seem to have a knack for picking up pretty solid under-the-radar guys to fill out their roster.

Kenneth Walker III, RB, Michigan State Walker broke out two week against Michigan with a 197-yard, 5-touchdown performance that could have him on a lot of people’s Heisman radars. This is obviously a much more sexy pick than the three above, as Walker is now a known commodity and might not even be available when the Bucs get their first pick. But assuming he is there, and assuming current Bucs running back Leonard Fournette gets a better payday elsewhere, the Bucs wouldn’t be completely stupid to take the Spartan. He’s an excellent runner, but his skills as a pass catcher haven’t quite been put on display in his college career. With Brady’s love for pass-catching backs, this could be a bit of a problem for Walker’s fit in Tampa. Regardless, his skills as a runner might

be enough to entice the Bucs, especially if they can find a third-down guy in free agency, or if they think Walker can develop that part of his game.

Adam Anderson, Edge, Georgia With how well Georgia has been playing (specifically its defense), it wouldn’t be a surprise to see multiple guys from that side of the ball go in the first round. Anderson is no exception, and with the Bucs potentially losing Jason PierrePaul to either free agency or retirement, Tampa Bay might need to find a third pass rusher to fill out its rotation. Anderson’s ridiculous athletic ability fills a similar profile to the Bucs’ first round pick last year (Joe Tryon-Shoyinka), and while it would be a little odd for Tampa to go the same position in consecutive drafts in the first round, you can never have enough pass rushers. Anderson, Shaq Barrett and the aforementioned TryonShoyinka would make up a pretty good pass rush rotation.

He shall be released A beloved St. Pete listening room is closing, but the owner plans to find a new space.

When the pandemic hit, Kelly instituted responsible protocols such as spacing the tables— which trimmed capacity to 80—encouraging masks and distancing, and opening two large doors so people could catch the music at tables outside. He cut way back on ticketed events and staged free shows, anything he could drum up to get people in the door and bring in dollars. Plus, “At key points, we were helped a lot by donations from angels, Hideaway supporters,” Kelly revealed.

Kelly does not know what the landlords have in store for the building. “It’s really not my concern,” he said.

The Hideaway’s near future consists of three basic scenarios: • Kelly can operate in the current location until the lease expires.

• Kelly has been in talks with the landlord about possibly breaking his lease and relocating earlier if he finds a new location that suits his purposes.

• Kelly can be evicted if he fails to make a rent payment on time.

Stressful? Very.

“The landlord was patient, I have to say,” Kelly allowed. “It wasn’t like we talked a lot, and I think on his end he probably said, ‘I’m done with this.’ He probably knows he can get continued on page 43

hen John Kelly got the news that his landlord would not renew his lease for the Hideaway Cafe & Recording Studio, he could’ve folded his tent. No one would have blamed him.

Kelly had spent well over a year in COVID hell, trying everything he could dream up to generate enough revenue to pay his bills and feed his family. During the first few months of the pandemic, when the Hideaway and similar businesses were shut down, he barely registered any revenue at all. Not surprisingly, Kelly fell behind on rent, as many live-music clubs did. He’d catch up, only to come up short again. It’s tough to make rent when your revenue is either nonexistent or a fraction of what it once was.

And yet: the Hideaway is still open, offering live music—singer-songwriters; blues, R&B and rock acts, and more—four to five nights a week. The living room-style venue’s days are numbered, but just how many are left is an open question. Kelly is determined to find another location and keep the Hideaway alive.

“I’ve had give-up moments, when I said, ‘fuck it,’” Kelly said in a phone interview in midOctober. “But I’m not that guy. I love people. I love music. I love putting on the shows. I’ve got to press on with this.”

So, no, John Kelly is not folding his tent.

And for anyone who’s been to the Hideaway— or values music played by real people, on real instruments, up close, through a pristine, studio-quality sound system—that is very good news.

Even in its best days, running the venue on the corner of Central Avenue and 18th Street in St. Pete came with struggles. As it turned out, presenting live music several nights a week in a 100-capacity room with low admission prices was not a ticket to ride. But Kelly thrives on it. His many hats include booking the acts, running sound, engineering occasional studio sessions during the day, cleaning up, and whatever else needs doing. He has maintained a small, dedicated staff of bartenders and servers, and over the years has employed several talented sound engineers. It’s been a massive undertaking, but Kelly has kept the

Still, Kelly has been in pure skin-of-yourteeth survival mode for a year and a half. It was in September that the landlord, Nader Lofti, told him he’d have to clear out when the lease ends next May. Kelly said that he was not offered the opportunity to re-up, even at a higher monthly rate. Closing down, he said, “is devastating. I love this room.”

According to public records, Lofti and William G. Thelen own several properties in St. Pete, including two small, adjoining storefronts in the 2300 block of Central Avenue. Lofti, Thelen and Kamyar Kadivar purchased the 7,000-square-foot Hideaway property in 2016 for $910,000. They list their address as a post office box in Washington, D.C.

continued from page 41 a lot more money. I just wish we’d had the conversation about if we could [renew] or not. We never did, and that’s more my fault than his.”

Kelly is toiling to keep the current Hideaway open while scouting for a new space. He recently found one that got him “really excited.”

Kelly declined to reveal the exact building but said it’s in Old Southeast, is larger than the current Hideaway, and is ideal for his purposes. He hopes to turn the space into something similar to what he has now: a cozy, pristine listening room that doubles as a recording studio.

Landing the new spot is no sure thing. While the long-vacant building is zoned commercial, city codes that could require major changes that Kelly can’t afford. “I just don’t know,” he said of the likelihood that he’ll occupy his chosen space.

“I’m hoping. I’m optimistic.”

If the desired new location doesn’t pan out, Kelly said he’ll find another. He has a realtor friend hunting places and, when time allows, he stops by to look them over.

Kelly clawed his way through the deepest summer doldrums of August and September.

Recently, business has picked up. He can’t predict how long the present Hideaway location will remain open. “I’ll keep looking for a new space, and in the meantime I hope people come out and see some of the great shows we have lined up,” he said. “That’ll make it less stressful to maintain operations for the months we still have.”

This story was originally conceived as an obituary of sorts. Thankfully, it’s not that.

Regardless, a few tributes to the soon-to-begone Hideaway and Kelly’s contribution seem in order.

Cue the Heartfest Testimonials Me first. I don’t exactly recall the first time I attended a show at The Hideaway, but it was a few years ago and I suspect it featured my friend Ed Woltil, one of the Bay area’s foremost singer/ songwriter/guitarists. I was instantly charmed by the room: lived-in couches and simple tables

strewn about; a low stage, but a stage nonetheless; an acoustic piano on that stage, rare for a small venue. A nice wooden bar along the wall opposite the bandstand that served craft beers and wine.

Then the music began. I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that the quality of the sound left me gobsmacked. Ed wasn’t up there by himself with an acoustic guitar and a microphone; he had a four-piece band.

I’ve been to several Hideaway shows over the years, and now wish I’d been to many more.

The most memorable one was in the summer of 2020. COVID had eased and people were starting to crawl out from their caves. I called Kelly and he ran down his health and safety protocols. I was more than satisfied. My friend David accompanied me to see Kirk Adams, another highly talented singer/songwriter/guitarist, on a Friday night.

Kirk was joined by a bassist, drummer and local guitar legend Steve Connelly. The gig started early, around 7 p.m. David and I sat at a four-top about 10 feet from the stage. No one was within six feet. We removed our masks. And basked.

I can still conjure up the elation from that night. We stayed for both long sets. The band was on, Connelly played as if possessed, the mix of originals and covers was engaging from start to finish. The playing was loose—Connelly said he only knew a few of the tunes—but just tight enough. The PA got loud but not too loud. The music reached a thrilling crescendo, like great shows should.

In all, it was a heavenly night amid COVID hell. (Note: Some of the quotes below were taken from interviews prior to my talking with Kelly.

Ed Woltil “[The Hideaway closing] is a huge loss because the place is so unique. The venue is unique and John is unique. He’s a musician himself and has the tech savvy to put together a great-sounding space, but he’s also unique in that he has real empathy and understanding of what the musicians go through.

“John has been tenacious in hanging in there, and all along showed a commitment to keeping the room alive, and with a community feeling. For me and the people in my sphere, that’s priceless.

It was always one of my favorite places to play, if not my favorite. All you had to do was go up on stage and play. Never had to worry about glitches or struggle with monitor sounds.

Sometimes those kinds of problems can throw you off. John always had it dialed in on stage and out front, so we got to focus on creating genuine musical moments. That does not always happen, but it almost always did at The Hideaway.

“One cool thing that would happen: Oftentimes after the show, when most of the people had cleared out, we’d come off the stage and be hanging around. I, or someone else, would sit on one of those couches with an acoustic guitar and we’d start an impromptu acoustic jam. A couple of other people would play and sing. John would join in.

We might call out Beatles songs. There would be an audience of five or six people who had hung around. Those were special moments.”

Christie Lenee, world-class acoustic guitarist and singer, a Tampa native who lives in Asheville, North Carolina “The Hideaway is my home venue when I’m down there. All my family and close friends come out and it’s always a sweet experience. John feels like a brother to me, and it just really feels like family there.

“I’ve traveled and performed in many countries and John’s sound system is better than any place that I’ve played. I can hear myself really well, and the fact that the audience is hearing what I’m hearing—which is not always the case in venues—feels like we’re all inside of the music together.

“The stage is elevated just a little bit, and it makes me feel completely connected to the audience. I like that I can see everyone, make eye contact. The lights are good, not too bright, and the fact that I can remain level with the people is important to me.

It makes me feel like ‘we’re all here together.’

“The love that John has put into that space really resonates in my soul the moment I walk in there.”

NO REST FOR DEVELOPMENT: Kelly’s had give-up moments, and said, ‘fuck it,’ but is simply not ‘that guy.’ and other musicians to get the regular opportunity to play our own stuff. In most other places, it’s the other way around: you have to sneak in a few originals in between cover songs.

“I had a Friday night residency there, and it gave me the opportunity to play with guest artists [usually guitarists] in a band setting, and in a lot of cases the music would evolve on the spot. That really helped me improve. There was the magic of playing with great musicians.

“The place was set up for people to pay attention to the music. It can be nerve-wracking to play when people are at the bar and it’s really loud with conversation. The people who come to the place understand that they are there for a listening experience. It isn’t like you can hear a pin drop, but the people are respectful and genuinely interested in what you have to play.

“I think a lot of people forget that so many musicians started out testing their songwriting aspirations at the open mic nights.

“When [The Hideaway] closes, there is nothing to replace it. There’s no place like it. It’s that simple.”

club owner and venue. At our first show there, I asked John if people really get “shushed”?

Would he do the shushing? He put his hand on my shoulder and looked me in the eye with that boyish grin and proudly stated, ‘the crowd will do the shushing, count on it! They want to hear you.’”

This dude even fed us after the show a few times, stuff that was not on the menu, food that he just made for what he called a “family dinner”!

Tom DeGeorge, owner of Crowbar in Ybor City and a tireless advocate for independent, live-music venues during the pandemic “If you want a real musical experience in the realm of the old MTV Unplugged, you know you can see something like that at The Hideaway. Other places tried to do that during COVID, but John had cornered the market.

“It’s a true venue for the artist. Almost every local artist I’ve talked to, Will Quinlan, Shawn Kyle and the like, talked about it all the time— how important it was for new artists, that it was a place to go where people would pay attention and the artists could be an honest version of themselves. They were able to establish a real connection with the audience. You don’t get that at too many other places.

“I don’t know the particulars about The Hideaway, but what we’re seeing here locally and all over the country is a movement toward

gentrification and development. When the pandemic hit, decisions were made to shut down small businesses—but the big boxes stayed open. While we were closed, we were fighting to pay our bills, and then development accelerated.

Our business sector became even more vulnerable to developers looking to grab up properties and turn them into large, multi-use projects.

“To me, The Hideaway should have never been put in this situation in the first place. When are people going to wake up and realize that we can’t live in a country where every single place you go for music or food or other parts of work, meet and play are devoid of stand-alone momand-pop businesses? That sure seems like the way we’re trending.”

One Last Thing Kelly already has a name for the new location: The Hideaway Cafe.

Five more years

Ybor venue Crowbar gets a much-desired lease extension.

rowbar, the scruffy live-music venue in Ybor City—a dying breed in Tampa’s Latin quarter—will be around until at least 2026 if owner Tom DeGeorge has anything to say about it. He signed a new five-year lease with his landlord, Ron Rampolla, in late September.

Crowbar, which until COVID had primarily presented touring rock acts, nosedived during the pandemic. Nothing unusual there. But DeGeorge, who’s an indefatigable crusader for independent live-music venues in Tampa Bay and nationally, was determined that his joint would not become a casualty. Surveying the landscape, he saw property values skyrocketing, and figured that owners of smaller buildings might be tempted to sell to big developers looking to put in large-footprint mixed-use projects. The thought of that happening in Ybor City horrifies him.

“I contacted Ron early on in the pandemic and told him, ‘I will not fall behind on the rent, but I really need you to extend my lease,’” DeGeorge said in a phone interview.

“I needed that security. It’s very important.”

He characterized Rampolla as “a fair landlord, but he’s a better friend. He lives in Ybor.

He supports what I’m doing. I’m very thankful

we extended. Our 20-year anniversary is in 2026, and I really want to get there.”

What if Rampolla chooses to sell the building? “[The lease] doesn’t stop him from selling, but it protects me,” DeGeorge explained. “I have a secure lease until July 2026. A new owner would have to wait out my contract, or come to me and say, ‘What’s it gonna take to get you out of here?’ I don’t have any desire to be bought out, but I need to know someone will have to compensate me so I wouldn’t be out in the street. I want to be able to focus on running the best live-music venue I can, and not be looking over my shoulder all the time.”

DeGeorge said that Rampolla assured him repeatedly that he has no plans to sell.

Crowbar was nothing like its old self from March 2020 until mid-September. For a while, DeGeorge presented smaller, seated (and distanced) shows in the main room and in the adjacent Beer Garden.

Programming has really picked up of late. On Sept. 17, Crowbar hosted its first national act, Transviolet, since the beginning of the pandemic. Since then, eight more touring acts have played the club’s stage, and DeGeorge said he has another 30 on the calendar for the remainder of the year.

And if you had the “Empire Records” soundtrack on repeat, then you most definitely know all of the words to “Til I Hear It From You.” Ruth Eckerd Hall is on the road, presenting this one at St. Pete’s Palladium Theater. (Hough Hall at Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg) C James Taylor & Jackson Browne A pair of famed American folk songwriters are playing a Tampa concert, although I’m not sure if there’s an AARP discount. In all seriousness, the bill brings together two of the biggest names in your parents’ record collection. Taylor, 73, last played Amalie in 2018, and Creative Loafing Tampa Bay last caught the 72-year-old Browne—a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee—the same year at Ruth Eckerd Hall. C Aaron Gillespie w/Rowdy/ NorthStreet Gillepsie is a person of many talents: drummer (Underoath/Paramore), singer (Underoath/the Almost), pastor, and former clothing shop owner. While most of his bands’ religious aspects are hidden under the metal, Gillespie’s solo stuff tends to be softer and more godly. In case that’s not your jam, Gillespie is putting out a new album with Underoath, so don’t be surprised if the metalcore hometown hero goes on tour with that band soon. (Crowbar, Ybor City) C Genitorturers w/Abbey Death/Sister Kill Cycle If you’re new to Tampa Bay you might not know of Genitorturers, one of the area’s most famously freaky acts.

The industrial-metal band started in the ‘90s, and has been entertaining audiences around the world with its BDSM-themed rock shows since. The shock-rock outfit is back in Tampa with fearless leader Gen guiding the way. Newbs to the scene should maybe start at The Castle and work your way up to a Genitorturers show—while the set’s much tamer than it was before the advent of camera phones, it’s still not for the weak, prude, and definitely not for children.

(Genitorturers is the only rock band with multi-page spread in Hustler if that makes it more clear.) (Brass Mug, Tampa)

C Tejon Street Corner Thieves w/IV and the Strange Band/Trailer Park Mark and the Crystaldeth Band/ Swamp Rats Colorado’s Tejon Street Corner Thieves makes its Tampa debut, and the rowdy foursome is going to fit in well here. The band’s “trashgrass and blues” has the same Have Gun, Will Travel singalong vibe, especially the band’s alcohol-soaked single “Whiskey” (fitting now that New World has a full bar). By the end of the show, there’ll a new batch of “tejomies,” for sure. Also on the bill is twangy rock from IV and the Strange Band; the “IV”— as in four not intravenous—is fronted by Tennessee musician Coleman Williams who’s the great-grandson of thee Hank Williams (and the grandson of Hank Williams II, and the son of Hank Williams III). Local support comes from Sarasota’s Trailer Park Mark and the Crystaldeth Band playing “heartbroken outlaw country” and Sebring’s Swamp Rats bringing Florida folk with a punk tinge. (Music Hall at New World Brewery, Tampa) C Zach Person w/Moonthing/Riffed Like his first single, “Can’t Stop Running, the career of Texan guitarist and songwriter Zach Person is in exponential growth mode. Person belongs in the new blues school—think Gary Clark Jr. and Cedric Burnside—making people realize the genre isn’t just for your grandpa. (Person performed Clark’s “Next Door Neighbor Blues” for his 2016 “American Idol” audition.) Though his self-titled debut LP was just released in the spring, the guitarist and vocalist has performed at Austin City Limits and shared the stage with Buddy Guy. Person makes his Tampa debut at the West River venue Friday night; you probably don’t want to regret missing this one.

(Hooch and Hive, Tampa) Zasxee w/Alien Witch/Dork Xtra It’s finally perfect weather for outdoor shows, and here’s a unique one that’s free to boot.

Each act on the bill “consists of a single member who has created unique music through a combination of instruments and technology.” There’s Zasxee with “indie-alt electro grunge” plus Orlando’s Alien Witch playing “funeral home cowboy drone Pagan dance music.” Tampa’s Dork Xtra provides a “nanoloop pop punk sing along” with songs we can all get behind (hello, “‘G’Night White Pride”). With descriptions like those, how can you miss it? (If I Brewed the World, St. Pete)

C Greg Billings Band After a lifetime of entertaining Tampa Bay, Greg Billings Band plays a sold-out final show. “It’s been great playing these songs the last 40 years,” said Billings in a release. “But I feel it’s time to move on to the next phase of my music life.”

Billings got national attention leading the ‘80s rock band Stranger (neé Romeo), but left in the mid-90s. Don’t be surprised if another Bay area celeb, Robin Zander, makes a surprise appearance; Billings worked with the

Cheap Trick frontman a few times, both live and in the studio. Masks are optional if you’re vaxxed. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater) Punks for Paws 2!: Samsara w/All She Wrote/Dangerpin/The Prople/Arcane Arcade/theCurse!/Lot Lizards/more Canine-themed Pinellas Ale Works (PAW) puts its money where its mouth is with a weekly “Yappy Hour” benefiting local animal charities, plus this weekend’s second iteration of a Punks for Paws fundraiser— rescheduled from April 2020—benefiting St. Pete’s Friends of Strays Animal Shelter. If you didn’t notice by the event name, most of the bands playing are in the punk family and hail from, or not too far from, Tampa Bay. No matter what your Saturday plans are, there’s plenty of time to catch a band or two—the event starts at 1 p.m. and goes until midnight. C Air Supply If you’ve never sang along to Air Supply’s “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” while driving and crying, have you ever even been heartbroken? Are you even human if you’ve never cried in the shower with the Australian-English duo’s “All Out of Love” on full blast? And can you even call yourself a yacht-rock fan if you’ve never dreamed of sailing off into the sunset drinking Riunite on ice while listening to “Even the Nights are Better”? If you relate to any of these queries, you’ll be happy to know the soft-rock band is playing in Clearwater, but remember: the band sold-out the venue the last time it was in town, so you’ve been warned. Masks are optional, unless for some reason you’re unvaccinated. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater) Caroline Jones w/Austin Meade Jones has opened for some really, really big names: Jimmy Buffet, Zac Brown Band, Trisha Yearwood, and, no biggie, the Rolling Stones.

Taking a break from her other job as Sirius XM’s “Art & Soul” host, she’s touring solo and bringing her ‘90s-style pop-country to New World’s Music Hall. With Jones is country-rocker Austin Meade; take a listen to his recently-released album Black Sheep to hear the kind of hard, Americana jams you’re in for. (Music Hall at New World Brewery) C Mustard Service w/Taverns/Treis and Friends Miami’s Mustard Service calls itself “zest pop” but I just like to call them “freaking good.” So freaking good in fact, it led Creative Loafing Tampa Bay to apologize for making fun of its name after the band “played one of the best shows we saw in 2018.” Hope to hear new songs from the quintet’s 2020 release C’est la Vie and this year’s EP Fiddle Lake.

Maybe the Ybor show will be one of the best of 2021, too. (Crowbar, Tampa)

C Tedeschi Trucks Band Wife and husband Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks lead this Grammy-award winning outfit which isn’t a duo. A dozen musicians with plenty of horns give the Jacksonville group its jammy-Americana-blues sound. Lead vocals are handled by Tedeschi—who could fool a novice into thinking she’s Bonnie Raitt—while Trucks works the guitar. This show will definitely feel better than the band’s last Tampa Bay appearance, a July 2019 show outside at Al Lang Stadium just months after the death of bandmember Kofi Burbridge. Like every other show this week, the Ruth Eckerd Hall doesn’t require masks unless you are not vaccinated. Best not to fib about this, Santa starts watching early these days. K Camp w/Oz Sparx/Moe Atlanta rapper K Camp had me feeling a type of way with his biggest hit “Comfortable,” which blends ‘90s slow jam feels with Fabolous’ “Into You” lyrics (with a much better rhyme scheme).

In August, Rolling Stone named the emcee’s “Tables Turn” a “Song You Need to Know,” just so you, well, know. Camp brings his “Float” tour to Ybor, in support of August's introspective album of the same name. Philly rapper Oz Sparx and Orlando duo Moe open.

A baseball-themed music festival is coming to Tampa this spring, and the lineup has a few grand slams.

mugged, assaulted, and murdered by people they met on apps, people have been mugged, assaulted, and murdered by people they met in bars—and at work, at church, through friends, etc. So, wherever we’re meeting people, online or off, we need to be careful; we need to have those first meetings in a public place, we need to tell a friend where we’re going and who we’re with, and we need to trust our guts. When someone makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, get out of there and/or ghost on them. (And if we find that people are constantly ghosting on us… well… then we need ask ourselves if we’re doing something that makes other people feel uncomfortable or unsafe.)

3. Not all bears have beards or kinks or wear leather. At any big event for bears, LACKING, you’re likelier to see guys in jeans, t-shirts, and trucker hats than you are to see guys in leather—unless it’s a fetish party, LACKING, where you’ll see a lot of guys in leather. But even at a fetish party, LACKING, you’ll see guys in neoprene, wrestling singlets, diving suits, hand-crocheted harnesses, and on and on. Leather isn’t required.

4. I’d rather listen to a charming guy tell me a funny story about his cat than a conceited guy drone on and on about some famous actor he saw on a backlot pocketing granola bars from the craft services table. I’m not saying you’re conceited or boring, LACKING, but if I were a betting man and only had the last paragraph of your letter to go on, I’d put my chips on conceited and boring. Look, if a guy tells you halfway through a date there’s nothing he wants to share with you about himself and invites you to carry on talking about yourself, that doesn’t mean he’s so enthralled by your stories he just wants to listen. That means he’s bored and/or annoyed and has already made up his mind that you’re not gaining access to his backlot.

Zooming out, LACKING, can you see the pattern in your letter? You say you want a relationship, but you don’t see the point of dating because you’re always moving. You say you want a relationship, but the apps are a waste of time because some people are sketchy. You say you want a relationship, but you don’t wanna go to places where people might be buying what you’re selling (bear nights, bear parties) because you don’t wanna wear the kind of clothes you’re required to wear at those events (leather, which you’re not actually required to wear) or grow the kind of facial hair you’re required grow to attend them (beards, which you’re not actually required to grow). You say you want a relationship, but guys who didn’t grow up with wealthy

2. Dating and hookup apps are awful. People on the apps sometimes lie about who they are, they ghost on you, and they block you without explanation. But bars are awful, too. I’m a 44-year-old gay male and I’ve never been in a serious relationship. I would like to find my way into an LTR, but I have a series of overlapping dating issues that I don’t know how to navigate.

First, due to my career, I move around a lot, and often don’t see the point in dating when I know I am going to be moving again; I have another potential move on the horizon in six months. Second, I find online dating apps to be awful. I have encountered more ghosts on apps than I did in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.

Last year, one date I arranged through an app turned out to be the setup for either a mugging or a hate crime. I managed to escape physically unharmed, but I did delete all the dating apps after that. Third, I’m a beefier guy, but I have never really fit into the bear community. I hate wearing leather, I can’t stand growing facial hair, and don’t have any kinks—and leather, beards, and kinks seem to be prerequisites for joining the bear club. Also, most bears are older guys and older guys don’t really do it for me. And younger guys always seem to be looking for a sugar daddy. I’m a Goldilocks who can’t find her “just right.”

Fourth and finally, I’ve lived a big life. Due to a parent in the entertainment industry, I grew up with backlot access. I have literally traveled all over the world. I can tell stories for days. But it makes dating hard when the other guy has only his work or cats to talk about. I’ve gone on more than one date where the guy told me he didn’t have anything interesting to say about himself and that he just wanted to hear about my life.

Viewed together, LACKING, the above looks less like “this dude is just unlucky in love” and more like “this dude is engaged in some serious self-sabotage.” So, the problem isn’t the apps or the job-related moves or leather pants or scratchy beards or guys who insist on boring you with stories about their cats when you’ve got a much better story about Mariska Hargitay’s dog walker. The problem is you. I’m not saying you’re an asshole or that you’re unworthy of love. You’re not an asshole; you’re just a little up your own ass. If love and commitment are what you want, LACKING, then I want you to find them. But you’re going to need to get out of your own ass and out of your own way.

P.S. If you have the kind of career that requires you to move every couple of years, LACKING, you should think twice before rejecting guys who aren’t as career-oriented or privileged as you are. Those are the guys w h o can
