Wage race

Workers are at the heart of St. Pete’s District 24 Senate race.

F

lorida’s “maverick” Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg), who’s sought to undercut Florida’s minimum wage requirement after the passage of Florida’s Amendment 2 last year, is finishing up his second and final term in the State Senate representing District 24, which covers mid-Pinellas County and is up for election in 2022. Brandes’ term in the State Senate ends next November. And due to term limits, he’s unable to seek re-election. As it is, there are currently two candidates in the running to replace him next year: Democrat Eunic Ortiz and Republican Nick DiCeglie. Like Brandes, both have strong but opposing positions on a $15 minimum wage in Florida—clear from their public statements, as well as their campaign finance activity. (A third candidate, Republican Timothy Lewis has also filed for the D24 Senate Race, but has raised just north of $100 since filing.) Eunic Ortiz, the Democrat running for Brandes’ seat, is an adjunct professor at the University of Florida and a former Communications Director for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which represents about 2 million workers in healthcare, the public sector, and property services—including 55,000 active and retired Floridians. The SEIU also principally funds the national Fight for $15 campaign, first launched in 2012 by fast food workers in New York City—and still led today by workers fighting for a federal $15 minimum wage and the right of all workers to unionize. Ortiz worked on Florida’s Amendment 2 campaign for a $15 minimum wage last year with SEIU Florida, who’ve endorsed her campaign for state Senate. With roots in Pinellas County, and a professional background in education, government communications, and organized labor, Ortiz seeks to advocate for everyday working Floridians in Tallahassee, with a platform focused on affordable housing, better funding

for public education, environmental protection, and naturally, more well-paying jobs for working Floridians. Nick DiCeglie, a sitting Republican State Representative in District 66, has also filed for the State Senate District 24 seat. DiCeglie is a businessman by trade, owner of the garbage collection service Solar Sanitation. He’s also chairman of the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce and former chairman of the Pinellas County Republican Party. In stark contrast to Ortiz, DiCeglie’s running on an explicitly right-wing platform, concerned with building Florida’s conservative principles, promoting the interests of business owners, fighting abortion rights and “radical gender policy” in education, and fighting fraud at the ballot box (gotta find it first, buddy). Unsurprisingly, DiCeglie has been endorsed by oBrandes, who he’d succeed in office if elected. And it makes sense. They’re both Republicans in a battleground purple district. Another reason it makes sense—both legislators have also received donor dollars from the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA), one of the fiercest opponents of Florida’s $15 minimum wage amendment last year and a state affiliate of the National Restaurant Association, which has lobbied hard against a U.S. federal $15 minimum wage.

ELECTIONS

“DiCeglie took to social media to express his displeasure with a $15 minimum wage.”

Following the money Brandes, who appears adamant on watering down Florida’s implementation of a $15 minimum wage—and thus, undercut the will of Florida voters—before leaving office, is well acquainted with the FLRA. Or, at least his campaign fund is. During his 2018 re-election campaign for Senate, Brandes received a total of $6,000 from the FRLA PAC, through donations made to his campaign fund and his PAC, Liberty Florida.

By McKenna Schueler

UNIQUELY QUALIFIED: Democrat Eunic Ortiz is one of two legitimate candidates running for the D24 Senate seat. And, despite his ability to work with some Florida Democrats on criminal justice reform bills, Brandes—who was the only Republican to vote against Florida’s highly controversial anti-protest legislation earlier this year— has also received over $25,000 from the GEO Group, one of the nation’s largest private prison contractors. DiCeglie, Brandes’ preferred successor, has also received some telling campaign contributions. Since filing for the District 24 Senate seat in March, DiCeglie has received $1,000 from the FRLA, which poured thousands into the statewide “Amendment 2 Hurts You” campaign last year. DiCeglie’s political action committee, the Economic Freedom Committee, also details sizable contributions from the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Florida—both of which opposed Florida’s Amendment 2. (Brandes has also been a recipient of donations from both.) Earlier this year, DiCeglie took to social

media to express his displeasure with a $15 minimum wage. “The $15 minimum wage has been proven to hurt the economy, increase unemployment, and destroy small businesses,” DiCeglie wrote in a social media post, commenting on a Fox News article that, among other things, incorrectly stated that California’s state minimum wage is already $15 an hour (it’s on track to reach $15 for most minimum wage workers by January 2022, with the exception of select municipalities that have already reached a $15 wage floor). “We need to find effective solutions to mitigate the impact this wage increase will have on our state. Floridians want to work, and noone deserves to be priced out of the economy,” DiCeglie said. As it is, the U.S. federal minimum wage currently rests at $7.25 an hour, and Florida’s isn’t set to reach $15 until Sept. 30, 2026. Along with over 30 U.S. cities and counties— largely based in California—the District of continued on page 12

405 contributions. Her opponent, Republican candidate DiCeglie, has raised $129,562 from half as many contributions (plus over $200,000 through his PAC since filing to run for Senate in March).

NICK NICK WHO’S THERE: Nick DiCeglie’s running on an explicitly right-wing platform. continued from page 11 Columbia (D.C.) is currently the sole U.S. territory to have a $15 minimum wage in place. Although a Congressional Budgets Office (CBO) analysis, published in February, estimated that a U.S. federal $15 minimum wage could kill about 1.4 million U.S. jobs, other reports from the Economic Policy Institute and UC Berkeley’s Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, have come up with different findings. For instance, a February analysis from the Economic Policy Institute found that raising the U.S. wage floor to $15 an hour by 2025 would raise wages for some 27 million U.S. workers, reduce poverty, and curb annual governmental expenditures on public assistance programs like SNAP. The EPI has also testified in Congress that the majority of economic research shows minimum wage increases “have raised the pay of the low-wage workforce without causing meaningful job loss.” In Florida, an estimated 2.5 million working Floridians will see their wages rise by 2026 as Florida’s wage floor reaches $15 an

hour minimum. According to the Florida Policy Institute, over one million families will be lifted out of poverty. While some struggle to make ends meet, others see millions After a year where low-wage workers bore the greatest brunt of unemployment, and Tampa Bay rent prices have soared, it’s pretty rich of some Republicans to say that offering something closer to a living wage for Florida’s lowest paid workers is a move worth challenging. It’s especially cutting coming from sitting Senator Brandes, who disclosed a net worth of $19.3 million in 2020, and State Rep. DiCeglie who’s worth about $4.5 million, according to financial disclosure documents filed with the Florida Commission on Ethics Democrat Eunic Ortiz, also running for Brandes’ Senate seat, hasn’t held public office, and thus hasn’t been required to submit financial disclosure documents. But this doesn’t mean she lacks experience working in government. After graduating

from UF in 2008, Ortiz moved to New York, where she worked in communications for the New York City Council. It was there in New York that Ortiz began working for the SEIU. In 2017, Ortiz returned to Florida to continue her work with the union in the Sunshine state. Naturally, Ortiz fully supports a $15 minimum wage, and has rebuked Brandes’ move to water it down with his own resolution. “[This] is not the first time Senator @JeffreyBrandes tries to make the min wage in FL lower than federal law. No one should work 40 hours a week & live in poverty,” Ortiz wrote after news broke of Brandes’ decision to refile his minimum wage bill in September. Like DiCeglie, Ortiz’s position on a $15 minimum wage is reflected in her campaign finance. Records show she’s received donations from three different SEIU-affiliated PACs, totaling $3,000—unsurprising, considering her SEIU Florida endorsement. In addition, she’s also received, mostly smaller donations, from several labor and political organizers throughout the state. Broadly speaking, most of Ortiz’s donations are in the $24-$100 range. Since filing to run, her campaign’s raised nearly $52,000 from

Latest attempt to undercut Florida’s minimum wage requirement Just last month, Republican State Senator Jeff Brandes refiled a bill, SJR 382, in the state legislature that would allow employers in Florida to exempt workers from the state minimum wage, which now rests at $10 an hour for nontipped employees, and is on track to reach $15 an hour by 2026 as a result of a ballot measure passed by Florida voters last year. Brandes filed a bill similar to this last session, with some differences. Last session’s bill specified certain types of workers—that is, people in prison, people with felony convictions, minors, and other “hard to hire” employees—that he’d see excluded from the state minimum wage requirement. Specifying, at the very least, which workers could see their labor legally devalued by Florida employers. The latest bill, filed literally the day before Florida’s scheduled minimum wage increase last month, is more vague. It doesn’t specify which workers could be paid less than minimum wage. Rather, it offers employers the option of providing any employee with a “training wage” for up to six months. Per Florida Politics, this training wage would be based on either a federal temporary training wage —at $4.25 per hour for people under 20 or 75% of the minimum wage — or what’s recommended by a state-commissioned study that would be conducted once every three years. “We think it’s a great tool that should be available to the Legislature if necessary,” Brandes told Florida Politics. “It may not be needed today, but we want to have the option of having it available in the future. And it’s all voluntary — voluntary for the employer to offer it and voluntary for the employee to accept it.” The bill filed by Brandes is a joint resolution. This means, like Florida’s minimum wage amendment last year, it would need to be put on statewide ballot and be approved by at least 60% of Florida voters to go into effect. As it is, sitting Sen. Brandes will be out of the District 24 State Senate seat next year, and Florida’s still on its way to reaching a $15 minimum wage. Evidently, this wage increase is still being challenged, as evidenced not only by Sen. Brandes’ latest “training wage” bill, but also by the corporations and lobbyists who have donated to the campaign of his endorsed successor. The 2022 Primary Election will take place on Aug. 23, 2022, and the General on Nov. 8, 2022.

Shots on ice

Radio station that hosts the Lightning is also home to loads of vaccine and COVID-19 falsehoods. By Timothy Burke

Hockey’s really important to us, but what’s going on right now in this rink—people getting vaccinated—is even more important. This is a matter of life and death.” That’s how Jeff Vinik welcomed guests on June 22, as the Tampa Bay Lightning owner prepared to introduce First Lady Jill Biden and top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci to Shots on Ice, a vaccination event at Amalie Arena giving the freshly jabbed a chance to score a goal, meet Lightning mascot Thunderbug, or win tickets to the next night’s Eastern Conference Final Game 7 against the New York Islanders. It was just the latest in the finance and real estate magnate’s vaccine promotions; the team had previously been offering ticketed fans the chance to get vaccinated before games throughout the playoffs, and Vinik was cosigner to an open letter to Ron DeSantis urging Florida’s governor to prioritize K-12 teachers during the vaccine rollout earlier

this year as well as a second open letter that asserted “It’s clear that vaccinating as large a portion of our population as possible will eventually end the pandemic and is the surest path to our state’s economic recovery.” That sentiment, it turns out, is not shared by one of the Lightning’s most prominent business partners. A week after Shots on Ice, the Tampa Bay Lightning Radio Network wrapped up its broadcast of the Lightning’s 3-1 win over Montreal in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. As Dave Mishkin and Phil Esposito signed off, Lightning radio flagship NewsRadio WFLA (970-AM) shifted to its overnight programming— a program called “Ground Zero,” hosted by Clyde Lewis. Lewis opened his show declaring that masks were “useless,” that mRNA vaccines (like those from Pfizer or Moderna) were “dangerous experiments” that “can cause massive damage” and have killed “thousands,” that there was a “mounted effort to actually gag those who are

LOCAL NEWS

speaking up about how the vaccines are hurting people,” and that a “radically evil agenda is under way whose goal is harm, not health, because those in charge believe that we need to find creative ways to cull the population or enable a long term plan of zero population growth” in the process of installing the “New World Order.” Not long after, Lewis declared “The bottom line is: taking the vaccine is just as risky as getting COVID-19.” That Lewis—a notorious Oregon conspiracy theorist and self-styled “paranormal expert” who regularly claims the Apollo moon landings were a hoax—would promote COVID denialism on his late-night radio show isn’t exactly shocking. (On May 26, the night the Lightning beat Florida 4-0 to move onto the second round of the playoffs, he called COVID precautions “The New Final Solution.”) But his anti-vaccination message isn’t unique among NewsRadio WFLA’s programming; indeed, hosts and guests of programs in nearly every hour of NewsRadio WFLA’s broadcast day have spent the better

part of 2021 discouraging listeners from getting vaccinated and casting doubt on the highly effective COVID vaccines. At the same time, NewsRadio WFLA programming has gone in deep on so-called “alternative therapeutics” like hydroxychloroquine or, more recently, ivermectin, promoting the latter more than 250 times since March according to research conducted using a media monitoring platform. Lightning on the radio While WFLA-TV, News Channel 8 and NewsRadio WFLA 970-AM once shared a corporate parent, they have been owned by different companies since 1983 and today are completely unaffiliated with each other. The Lightning’s partnership with WFLA is unique. Among the NHL’s 32 teams, the Lightning are the only one whose radio flagship is an explicitly political radio station; 21 teams are hosted on sports talk stations, five air on “straight news” stations, two on community or college radio, and one on an alternative rock station. don’t work like national TV contracts do; while the big networks bid on rights to air sports programming, at the local level it’s the teams themselves that shell out cash to rent airtime on the station and recoup the cost through selling ads. For NHL teams, that’s sometimes a struggle. Hockey doesn’t command the radio audiences other sports do, and second-tier teams in packed markets sometimes can’t find airtime at all. That’s what led the Los Angeles Kings to ditch terrestrial radio entirely last year; the San Jose Sharks did the same earlier this year, citing the costs associated with maintaining a radio broadcast. It’s been a similar ride for the Lightning, despite the team regularly scoring radio audiences that rank among the NHL’s best—and that ride has occasionally brought the team into conflict with Tampa Bay’s other pro sports teams. The Bolts debuted their 1997 season on Jacor Communications-owned sports-talk WDAE, only to see Clear Channel Communications gobble Jacor up the next year. After the Rays’ surprise 2008 season—which saw Dave Wills and Andy Freed calling the World Series on WDAE’s tiny sister station WHNZ 1250-AM—the decision was made to move baseball to WDAE; when games conflicted, which happened often in late fall or early spring, the Lightning were relegated to 1250 themselves. (Team management prior to Jeff Vinik’s acquisition of the team in 2010 paid so little attention to its radio obligations that at one point, its Clear Channel deal expired and nobody even noticed.) Vinik’s influence on the organization showed results quickly, as the team came a win away from making the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. Lightning executives, tired of fans complaining that they couldn’t find playoff games on radio, asked Clear Channel for a permanent home for hockey—and were handed NewsRadio WFLA, where they’ve been ever since. In 2014, Clear Channel changed its name to iHeartMedia; it now owns 855 stations across the country, nine of them here in Tampa Bay.

One of the biggest purveyors of anti-vax disinformation on WFLA has been the Clay Travis & Buck Sexton show, airing between noon-3 p.m. On July 6—the day before the Lightning claimed their second-straight Stanley Cup—Travis falsely claimed that “There’s no reason whatsoever” that young, healthy people should get the vaccine. A week later, Travis & Sexton hosted prominent COVID disinformation purveyor Alex Berenson; Travis welcomed Berenson by falsely claiming COVID posed a “0% danger” to kids, and Berenson responded by alleging the vaccine was responsible for “many, many cases of myocarditis.” On Sept. 21, the show hosted Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, who has been one of the loudest and most prominent voices casting skepticism on the vaccine. JOHNSON: It doesn’t look like the vaccine’s holding up very well against Delta. The most recent technical brief by Public Health England shows that overall in 2021 70% of deaths are in partially or fully vaccinated individuals, 30% in the unvaxed. Over the most recent time, August 2nd to September 21st, it’s about 74% in fully vaccinated vs 26% in the unvaxed. So, that’s unfortunate. I wish the vaccines were 100% effective, 100% safe but it doesn’t appear that they are. Johnson is citing a common anti-vax misreading of the data; USA Today provides a full fact-check of how Johnson and other anti-vaxxers are wrong. Furthermore, his assertion that “it doesn’t look like the vaccine’s holding up very well” is completely false. Hannity’s show has also been a fount for antivax rhetoric. On July 20, he praised a caller for not getting vaccinated; the same day, he praised

“This is a matter of life and death.”

A safe haven for disinformation NewsRadio WFLA’s programming, meanwhile, has long been representative of conservative politics. Glenn Beck’s program originated there in 2000—giving the boot to Dr. Laura—while the right-wing malcontent’s “Assault On America” show (conceived after the 9/11 attacks) carried the station’s afternoon broadcasts before giving way to Rush Limbaugh. Beck remains a WFLA staple, alongside Clay Travis and Buck Sexton (who inherited Limbaugh’s throne), Sean Hannity, and Jesse Kelly. Each of these shows has spent 2021 dedicated to downplaying the severity of COVID-19, dismissing the value of vaccinations, and promoting untested and potentially dangerous remedies.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky for doing the same. But perhaps the most bizarre Hannity moment came on July 22, when he dedicated nearly 15 minutes of his radio show to refuting the idea that he had ever encouraged anyone to get vaccinated. HANNITY: And, you know for example, Yahoo News: “Suddenly Sean Hannity and other Fox hosts are urging their viewers to get COVID19 vaccines.” Suddenly? Well, first of all, I’m not urging people to get the COVID-19 vaccine, because I’m not a doctor. That is not what I said [...] You know, Biden suggesting that people like me had an altar call on vaccines -- no, I haven’t. .. “Sean Hannity basically begs his viewers to get vaccinated.” No, I didn’t. I’m begging everybody, don’t mess around with this thing. Take it seriously... It would be wrong of me, not knowing your medical condition, to tell you what to do. It’s not right.... Now, we do have therapeutics. I mean, they could be saying, “Wow, studies show that people like Hannity were right on hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin and therapeutics like Regeneron,” but we’re never going to hear that either [...] “Hannity’s pro vaccine speech is welcome” -- I mean, what -- why are they saying something I didn’t say? [...] “Hannity urges viewers, get COVID vaccine.” I never said that. A week later, Hannity claimed the Delta variant would see a “dramatic reduction probably in around six weeks.” The next day, Aug. 3, Hannity dedicated an hour of his show to hosting anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists Brian Tyson and George Fareed, who advised a caller to not vaccinate his special needs child and

falsely claimed that “The vaccine has lost its efficiency as far as protection.” And on Sept. 23, Hannity hosted Robert Malone, the selfproclaimed “inventor” of mRNA technology. Malone falsely claimed vaccinated individuals were “a whole huge bunch of super spreaders” and that “The truth is, it’s the unvaccinated that are at risk from the vaccinated.” Other NewsRadio WFLA programming quickly fell in line. On Aug. 30, Jesse Kelly show guest-host James T. Harris alleged COVID precautions were a conspiracy and that “the vaccine doesn’t work.” The morning Business Happy Hour program on Sept. 19 declared “there’s really no need” to get vaccinated if you’re healthy and young; “If you go to the gym, get exercise, you’re not going to get that sick.” Bill Cunningham’s Oct. 3 program launched deeply into the conspiracy theories, asking viewers, “You don’t have the right as a human being, as an American to say no to a medical treatment that has killed some thousands, have either died or been hospitalized after getting the vaccine?” “When we have well less than 1% of the American people who received the COVID-19 viral infection actually even went to the hospital. 1% guess what is 3.5 million people. Talk about panic porn,” Cunningham added. “Talk about giving up your constitutional rights.” That was echoed the next morning by Glenn Beck who said, “It’s going to be for the common good that we all take the Borg chip.” What, then, should the solution to COVID continued on page 17

The ‘Starbucks of salad’ is headed for South Tampa.

P

opular Los Angeles salad chain Sweetgreen is set to open a location in South Tampa. Permit-obsessed website Tampa Tomorrow reported that the Hyde Park Village location filed permits and will be just over 2,310 square feet with indoor and outdoor seating, adding that the 14-year-old concept partners with local farmers in whichever city they’re located in. Pictures and video posted by the site show the 29-seat location going next to Salon Norrell Aveda just a few steps away from the Hyde Park Village Fountain. The chain has an ambitious mission, which includes becoming carbon neutral by 2027, and Sweetgreen’s menu includes bowls for days (curry cauliflower, elote, “shroomami”), salads, a hot honey chicken plate, plus sides like buffalo cauliflower and focaccia bread. There’s no opening date, but this looks like the Starbucks of salad (which co-founder Nathaniel Ru has described aspirations for his concept), indeed. sweetgreen.com Open Sprouts Get ready to spend all your money at the Sprouts deli because the latest location for the boutique grocery store opened in Tampa Heights on Wednesday. Locals first got wind of Tampa’s new Sprouts last summer, and promotions folks for the Tampa Heights location were handing out shopping bags and $5 off coupons last week at nearby Water Works Park. To celebrate the opening, Sprouts offered the first 200 customers at the Tampa Heights store 25% off their entire order (not including beer, wine, gift cards or stamps). The grocer is known for having a wide selection of natural and organic foods, which includes produce, vitamins, packaged groceries, seafood, deli, baked goods, dairy products and frozen foods. The addition of Sprouts means that Tampa Heights—already home to one of Tampa’s oldest grocery stores, Oceanic—now has two grocery stores within walking distance of each other. 101 W 7th Ave., Tampa. sprouts.com

Timpano’s menu is known for its classic Italian offerings, including steaks, seafood, housemade pasta and weekly live music. Tavistock Brand Marketing Manager Lauren Gustafson confirmed that live music is to be expected at the renovated location back in July, but official details are still TBA. Hours are also TBA, but you can take a peek at the dinner menu online before you head in. For reservations, you can try Open Table or call the restaurant at (813) 254-2870. For now, you can keep up with all the restaurant’s opening details on Facebook or by following @timpanohydepark on Instagram. 1610 W Swann Ave., Tampa. timpanohydepark.com Coming soon Mayday Handcrafted Ice Cream Ybor City will soon be home to flavors like “Mint Monster”, “The Aviator” and “Queen Salted Caramel” when Mayday Handcrafted Ice Cream makes its debut at the storefront previously occupied by Hyppo Gourmet Ice Pops. Mayday—whose name is a tribute to American soldiers who longed for ice cream during WWII—is a St. Augustine-based business, which now has multiple storefronts throughout northeast Florida. St. Augustine native Stephen DiMare is the owner of both Hyppo Gourmet Ice Pops and Mayday Ice Cream, and according to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, DiMare thought that Mayday was a better choice for the Centro Ybor location. Mayday sets itself apart with bold twists on classic flavors, like the popular “Parent Trap” which combines peanut butter swirls with Oreo cookies, Florida-centric offerings like key lime pie ice cream, and seasonal favorites like blackberry earl grey and caramel apple pie. This north Florida chain will soon join the ranks of the other Ybor ice cream spots, like Chill Bros. Scoop Shop and Snobachi Ice Cream. Mayday usually gives out free ice cream on grand opening days, so keep your eyes peeled for its Ybor debut. In the meantime, browse the many flavors online in preparation for the big day. By Katlynn Mullins and Ray Roa

OPENINGS & CLOSINGS

Reopened Timpano Good news for Italian foodies, South Tampa’s Timpano Italian Chophouse officially reopens in Hyde Park Village on Nov. 1. After being closed since summer 2020, the restaurant is opening at 4 p.m. next Monday for dinner service initially, with lunch and brunch service to follow in the coming weeks, according to a press release.

ICYMI You can now get La Segunda’s Cuban bread at Publix If you’ve ever seen a roaming green cart filled with Cuban bread while you’re shopping at Publix, chances are it was filled

KALE YEAH: The 29-seat Sweetgreen will be just a few steps away from the Hyde Park Village Fountain with Casino Bakery’s signature bake. Now, though, you’ll also be able to grab La Segunda’s Cuban bread on select shelves around the Bay. Right now, there are only six locations carrying the bread, but more stores are going to be added to the deal, according to the bakery’s Instagram. If you’re wondering whether your Publix is going to continue carrying the bread from Casino, you should call ahead (ask for the grocery department). Each location is going to have its

own offerings and they all differ unless you’re looking for the stuff from the Publix Bakery. That’s not the only growth the Tampa favorite has announced this year, though. La Segunda also announced its expansion into St. Petersburg earlier this year, and it’s set to open this fall, according to its Instagram. We’ll keep you updated, but you can follow La Segunda on Instagram (@lasegundabakery) or check out its Facebook if you want to keep an eye out yourself. lasegundabakery.com

Joshua Ginsberg's new book is a nearly 200-page scavenger hunt that'll take you to the quirkiest places in Tampa Bay. By Ray Roa

oshua Ginsberg’s last book, “Secret Tampa Bay,” reads like a full-on guide to the weird and wonderful places in the Bay area. It’s the kind of information that makes you the most interesting person on Tinder, and now Ginsbgerg has a follow-up where you and the fiancé-you-met-online can take friends on crazy day trips across the entire region. “Tampa Bay Scavenger” is 192 pages, out now via St, Louis, Missouri’s Reedy Press, and it’s not exactly casual weekend walking tour material. Using more than 350 rhyming riddles, Ginsberg—who was inspired by author Misha Collins’ “Greatest International Scavenger Hunt” (GISH)—sends readers across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota Counties to tap into the same wonderment that led him to both “Secret Tampa Bay” and his latest work.

Sea worthy

freeFall’s latest is ready to make a splash. By Jon Palmer Claridge

W

atching freeFall Theatre’s effervescent, giddy musical spoof, “Dames at Sea,” got me thinking about how “tempus fugit.” When a teenage Bernadette Peters burst onto the New York theater scene as Ruby (after innocent flapper tapper Ruby Keeler), it was late in the swinging 1960s amidst the upheaval of the Vietnam War and the incipient sexual revolution. We were just 30-plus years removed from the extravagant Busby Berkeley film musicals that buoyed the spirits of Depression-era America. “Dames’” spot-on parody of these ebullient, over-the-top films was funny not just because of the inverted scale—”Dames” cast of six vs. the dancing multitudes of the 1930s—but because of familiarity. Audiences knew the genre well and instantly recognized composer Jim Wise’s pastiche score stolen directly from the Great American Songbook. And the lyrical references to film stars of the prior era put a smile of recognition onto the faces of mid-20th Century patrons. Now, we’re 50-plus years from “Dames’” heyday. Luckily, Gen X and millennial audiences have TCM and Amazon Prime to study this ancient history. But, we must remember that Busby Berkeley was no more removed from late60s theatregoers than Madonna and Michael Jackson are from today. “Dames” takes careful aim and hits a tuneful bullseye on its intended target. The more you know about the genre, the funnier the spoof is. The main character names are a direct ripoff of the 1930s stars, but the ever tuneful score may have jaded 2021 audiences scratching their heads and running to their online dictionaries. Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” (which inspires an Act II delight) was an old duck even in 1935. And the big, penultimate number—built on an ancient British sailing term “Jack Tar”—hails our heroine as the “Star Tar” of the Navy. These esoteric origins might perplex modern audiences. At least the “poop deck” lyric gets a chuckle, but not for its French/Latin roots. Director Eric Davis does his best to establish historical context through projected titles, reminding us of the early 20th Century pandemic, economic crash and the concomitant political polarization that echo with the present moment. And as luck would have it, freeFall Theatre is blessed with Michael Raabe, it’s über-talented, nostalgic musical director and arranger who lives for music before he was born. Plus, Davis knows the style of these musical masterpieces and understands intuitively exactly how to translate their enormous appeal for 21st Century crowds. The early love song “It’s You” features clever heart-shaped projections that

serve as a visual reinforcement for those young audience members for whom Shirley Temple is merely a kiddie cocktail with extra maraschino cherries. The beaming cast captures the “gee-whizz” enthusiasm embedded in this American culture fairy tale of overnight stardom. Ephie Aardema (plucky dancer Joan) and Erick Ariel Sureda (supportive friend Lucky) shine as the second bananas. Kristina Huegel, seems a tad young as the jealous aging star, Mona Kent, but she proves to be an adept farceur and musical triple threat. The versatile Tyler Fish doubles as the

Their lustful “The Beguine” lampoons the rekindling of an old flame with delicious stylized flair. Perhaps it’s asking too much for Kyra Smith’s eager young Ruby to shine like the singular talent of Bernadette Peters, who created the role. Smith is appropriately cheerful and demonstrates significant tapping and vocal chops, but lacks the star power to dominate the stage

(with essential props) each time inspiration strikes. Visually, the show is up to freeFall’s high standards. Director Davis has worked hand in glove with Set/Lighting Designer Tom Hansen to create charming, evocative stage pictures, using the Art Deco proscenium arch and entrances, plus a gun metal battleship with faux painted cannons, rows of rat-a-tat rivets and a shimmering navy blue metallic tinsel fringe curtain.

to quicken the pulse. That doesn’t dampen the considerable joy enveloping the audience, but it does make me long for moments that thrill rather than amuse. But, if you can keep your 2021 cynicism in check, I urge you to go. “Dames at Sea” is the perfect injection of joy to inoculate audiences from COVID malaise. It’s a one-shot vaccination without political ripples that is it’s own booster.

The darkest, most brutal and goriest ‘Halloween’ is also the best sequel yet. By John W. Allman

I

love October when friends revisit their favorite horror franchises because it prompts fun debates about the lasting imprint of certain movie maniacs and the films that helped define them. For me, the best pound-for-pound, allaround-exceptional slasher film ever made is John Carpenter’s “Halloween.” Like its titular shape, Michael Myers, the original 1978 “Halloween” has withstood time and remains the most vital, fully-formed slasher experience ever created. And that’s before you even consider the 11 (?-!-?) sequels, reboots and odd outliers that make up its cinematic oeuvre. Personally, I have always championed “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” and “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers,” just because of how bizarre and batshit crazy both are. But the real truth is that until director David Gordon Green and Danny McBride teamed up in 2018 for their take on the classic there had never been a truly good sequel to Carpenter’s original. Best of all, for fans, Green and McBride had a vision that would deliver a concluding trilogy to give the millions of franchise faithful a fitting denouement.

FILM & TV

Yes, there is social and political commentary happening here, but the echoes of Jan. 6, to which they most certainly are alluding, shouldn’t deter anyone from watching. It’s not overdone, but it definitely makes you think. Besides, there’s so much happening in “Halloween Kills” to titillate your inner geek, I suspect a lot of people may miss this subtle comparison altogether. Green and McBride not only deliver an amazing shout-out to “Halloween III,” which serves to finally establish the third film’s rightful place in “Halloween” canon, but they also openly discuss the kind of crazy mythology last heard in “Curse of Michael Myers” in such a way that makes sense. If Michael is not the embodiment of pure evil in corporeal form, if he isn’t the boogeyman for real, then how else do you explain him being bulletproof, fireproof and death-proof? A better question, left unsaid for now, is how the fuck do you get rid of such a menace that never rests, never relents and refuses to die? I have a feeling we will find out in 2022 when the Green-McBride trilogy concludes. And I fully expect Strode to be front-and-center. There’s a reason why Jamie Lee Curtis is barely on-screen in “Halloween Kills,” and I suspect it’s because she’s going to go full-on Thunderdome with her brother, Ripley versus Xenomorph Queen style, when “Halloween Ends” next year.

SHUDDER

The best and worst new movies to stream for Halloween. By John W. Allman

I

t's been just over 80 weeks since this godforsaken pandemic started, and while some of us are ready to party after COVID-19 "took away Halloween" last year, many of us are still just as happy to be maskless at home, on the couch in our underwear and all ready for a binge session. Here are the best new, spooky movies you can stream right now (and a couple to avoid altogether). V/H/S/94 ★★★★, 103 minutes, Shudder The span of time between classic-worthy horror anthologies used to seem forever. For every “Creepshow,” released in 1982, it could take eons until a worthy counterpart, 2007’s “Trick ‘r Treat,” was released. Starting in 2012, however, the horror anthology roared back with a

vengeance with the debut of “V/H/S,” which used found footage and various other emerging technologies, to tell short films packed with gore, legitimate scares and tons of fun. It has been seven years since “V/H/S Viral” was released, but thankfully, and just in time for Halloween, the fourth film in the franchise, “V/H/S 94” has debuted exclusively on the streaming Shudder platform. “V/H/S 94” unspools four short films with a wraparound story, and it’s fair to say that the franchise has never been better. Three of the five films contained here, “Storm Drain,” “The Empty Wake” and “The Subject,” deserve inclusion among the best shorts that this series has produced. “Storm Drain” follows an intrepid TV news reporter on the hunt for an urban legend, which results in one of the best closing moments of all

the “V/H/S” films, as well as a loving homage to “The Howling.” “The Empty Wake,” from “V/H/S” alum Simon Barrett, is a master’s class in mounting tension as he focuses on a young, female funeral home employee tasked with sitting alone with a casket at a wake no one seems intent on attending. “The Subject” comes courtesy of Indonesian writer/director Timo Tjahjanto (“Killers,” “May the Devil Take You”), who previously co-directed the best “V/H/S” segment of them all, 2013’s “Safe Haven,” with Gareth Evans. Do yourself a favor and take a trip back to 1994 as soon as possible. “V/H/S 94” will not disappoint.

for decades, so much so that Tampa Theater’s A Nightmare on Franklin Street celebrated the film with a special cast-member screening in 2018. Now, 39 years after driller killer Russ Thorn first terrorized a group of scantily clad coeds, Shout Studios! and SyFy have resurrected Thorn’s legacy with a proper reimagining that is so much better than anyone might have ever anticipated. Seriously, I fucking loved it, and I think Corman would too. The 2021 iteration, directed by Danishka Esterhazy, who previously directed 2018’s “Level 16,” a warped dystopian thriller about a pintsized operation reminiscent of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” is packed with sly social commentary and uproarious humor, and it doesn’t miss any opportunity to splatter the screen with gore. Much like 2015’s “The Final Girls,” the script for “Slumber Party Massacre” leans heavily into meta territory, which helps elevate it above your traditional slasher fare. The original “Massacre” was an expertly conceived blast of feminist rage,

and the new “Massacre” wisely, and proudly, continues that tradition. Did I mention this movie is funny as hell? The core foursome, Dana (Hannah Gonera), Ashley (Reze-Tiana Wessels), Maeve (Frances Sholto-Douglas), and Breanie (Alex McGregor), set out for a girl’s weekend excursion. Dana is the daughter of the sole survivor of Thorn’s 1993 slaughterfest at a remote cabin on a lake at a vacation getaway called Jolly Springs, and her mother still has not recovered from that experience. Even though she bested Thorn, police never found his body and decades later he has become an urban legend, rumored to still stalk the same woods. As they travel, the girls discover that Maeve’s kid sister, Alix (Mila Rayne), has stowed away in the rear of their SUV, which is a welcome development given how well-written Alix’s character is. “This is our special weekend that you’re not invited to,” Maeve yells at her. “I know,” Alix says, “that’s why I’m here.” Car trouble derails their trip, or so it would seem, forcing the girls to spend the night in a creepy old mansion on a secluded lake near a former vacation getaway called, wait for it, Jolly Springs. The owner of the house, Kay (Jennifer Steyn), is a riot. She tells the girls to stay inside, stay quiet and stay safe. “I feel bad for her,” Maeve says, as Kay leaves them alone. “Me too,” Alix says. “Old people are depressing.” “Slumber Party Massacre” is rife with twists, swerves and a wonderful fascination with upending the stereotypical exploitation that accompanies slashers. Instead of showing ater’sthe girls in various stages of undress, Esterhazy ratedinstead creates a recurring montage of young reen-men (true crime podcasters intent on seeing whether Thorn is still alive) staying in an adjaThorncent cabin having bare-chested pillow fights and oeds, taking long, luxurious showers. ected To say more would be to spoil all the goodthatness cooked into this wonderful casserole that e evercelebrates low-budget cinema and returns the , andDriller Killer to his rightful place among hortoo. ror’s hallowed maniacs. ation, shkaThe Vigil Level★★★★, 89 minutes, streaming pint-There really is nothing scarier than being in maid’sa room, alone, with a dead body. Keith Thomas’ electrifying debut, “The Vigil,” puts viewers squarely in the shoes of a Shomer, the Hebrew term for a male guardian tasked with carrying out Shemira, the Jewish ritual where a body must be watched from the time of death to burial. Dave Davis is captivating as Yakov Ronen, a conflicted former Shomer who is recruited to watch over the body of a man who believed he was possessed by a malignant entity that must find a new vessel to torment. “The Vigil” is packed with holy shit moments throughout. I dare you to watch with the lights completely off and not pull your knees up close to your chest. it’s also just fascinating to learn about a cultural practice that most of us likely never knew existed. Jumbo ★★★½, 93 minutes, streaming “Jumbo,” the debut feature from director Zoé Wittock, is proof that love can manifest in the strangest of ways and defy conventional perceptions of who and what is deserving of our deepest desire. It’s no spoiler to let slip that “Jumbo” is the story of Jeanne (Noémie Merlant), a young woman with an overbearing, over-eager and all too easy mother (Emmanuelle Bercot), who finds herself smitten with a carnival attraction that she soon spends all of her time with, both clothed and naked. “Jumbo” is hallucinatory, revelatory and absolutely fearless. Factory’s Scream Factory division continue to unearth gems like “Alone in the Dark,” a fantastic little slasher from 1982 from acclaimed cult director Jack Sholder (1987’s “The Hidden”). “Alone in the Dark” boasts an incredible cast of A-list, Oscar-winning talent with Jack Palance, Martin Landau

and Donald Pleasence, as well as early performances by genre stalwarts Lin Shaye and Dwight Schultz. If you haven’t seen it, this is the perfect time of year to rent it on your favorite streaming platform or buy the deluxe Blu-Ray collector’s edition. Knocking ★★★, 78 minutes, streaming Documentarian and short-film director Frida Kempff’s first feature-length film, “Knocking,” is an eerie, unsettling exercise in paranoia and psychotic delusions. It’s a bit too much of a slow boil for me, but I suspect many viewers will love the way Kempff unspools her narrative. I wanted and needed just a little more information upfront. There should be no argument, however, about Cecilia Milocco’s lead performance as Molly. Holy hell, she’s superb. Detention ★★★, 85 minutes, streaming The best horror often is mined from real life experiences, and “Detention,” a festival favorite hailing from Taiwan, uses a particularly intense period of its history, the early 1960s during martial law, when personal freedoms were under attack, to create a slow-burn thriller that explodes with fantastic special effects without sacrificing its strong character development. Even more impressive is the fact that “Detention” is based on a video game.

Superhost ★★★½, 84 minutes, Shudder Proving that a really good and really unnerving movie can be made about renting a stranger’s house for a weekend (sorry, Dave Franco), “Superhost” perfectly scorches our latest obsession with creating digital content at any cost, and shows the price that can be paid for not showing any concern for how such viral vitriol might impact others. Best of all, Gracie Gillam is utterly terrifying as Rebecca, the Airbnb host from hell,

whose jittery facial tics and crazy eyes thankfully don’t spoil the depths of her menace, which is a delicious surprise saved for the explosive third act.

BIG LOVE: Jumbo prooves that love can manifest in the strangest of ways.

SUB-ZERO: ‘Karen’ is the very definition of irresponsible trash TV. continued from page 37 Demigod ★★, 95 minutes, streaming It’s not often that I find myself thoroughly frustrated with a director/writer/actor, but the prolific Miles Doleac continues to confound me. I absolutely loathed his 2019 effort, “Hallowed Ground,” and then absolutely loved his 2020 follow-up, “The Dinner Party.” I had high hopes for his latest, “Demigod,” but despite showing Doleac’s increasing talent behind the camera, the uneven script which he co-wrote takes too many easy turns instead of leaning heavily into the weird flourishes that made his elite cannibal cabal in “Dinner Party” so enthralling.

such an event. Instead, it’s more of the same: Military soldiers acting unilaterally, killing any survivors they encounter out of fear. A lone hero who self-isolates in the woods to avoid conflict, crippled by the memory of seeing his wife executed. A pretty blonde detainee who shows up wounded, needing help. Not even Bob Ross himself could turn this tired canvas into a happy little accident.

FILM & TV

Naked Singularity ★★, 93 minutes, streaming As a screenwriter, Chase Palmer delivered the goods as one-third of the writing team responsible for 2018’s “It,” but as a writer-director, he’s still got some miles to travel. His feature debut, “Naked Singularity,” is a bizarre hybrid that tries to merge science fiction into a timely legal drama with mixed results. The main issue I had was that Palmer seemed to hold back too much from going further with his time-space-quantum physics subplot, spinning wheels instead on a not-as-good subplot involving a Mexican drug cartel and a troubled femme fatale.

The Secret of Sinchanee ★, 115 minutes, streaming “The Secret of Sinchanee,” a new paranormal frightener, has a couple of decent jump scares, but its convoluted narrative about an ancient conflict between indigenous tribes people and the evil cult that wants to eradicate them, gets muddied by too many subplots and too much exposition. Karen 0 star(s), 89 minutes, streaming If only there was a way to give “Karen” less than zero stars. This BET-produced “thriller” about a privileged white single mother (Taryn Manning) named Karen, who loses her shit upon learning that an affluent Black couple have moved into her cul-de-sac, is the very definition of irresponsible trash TV. For one, no one comes out of this abomination looking good. The unapologetically racist Karen starts off with her dial turned to 11, leaving absolutely nowhere for Manning to go with the character. But the script doesn’t do any favors to its Black characters either, saddling Cory Hardrict (Malik) and Jasmine Burke (Imani) with ridiculous dialogue and illogical actions that does more of an injustice than 100 dome-haired, middle-aged nags standing outside their door just waiting to point a finger or call 9-1-1.

“If only there was a way to give ‘Karen’ less than zero stars.”

Last Man Down ★½, 87 minutes, streaming Pandemics have become the go-to global crisis of late in direct-to-video action and horror fare, but “Last Man Down,” a dubbed, Euro-trash actioner starring bodybuilder-turned-actor Daniel Stisen, fails to find anything meaningful to do with or say about the ramifications of

Ahead of Stones gig, former Tampa Times photographer shares stills taken at the Big Sombrero. By Ray Roa

T

he last time Rick Norcross saw the Rolling Stones, he had to be flown in by helicopter. “That was the situation, otherwise you had to go through all these roadblocks,” Norcross told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. It was Thanksgiving weekend, 1969, and concert promoters had booked a weekend festival at the rural Palm Beach County race track—it was supposed to be South Florida’s answer to Woodstock. But then-president Nixon was in town, and the Stones’ plane had to circle for hours; the band didn’t get to the venue until 4 a.m. It was cold in Florida that weekend, and the Palm Beach Post noted that fans who’d stuck around 10 hours past the original set time “were burning trees, fences, bleachers — anything to keep warm.” As the Stones head back to the Sunshine State for the band’s only Florida stop happening Friday at Raymond James, CL is visiting Norcross’ “Press Pass” digital collection of more than 100 photos taken during a golden age of touring, 1969-1974. Norcross captured these photos during his stay with The Tampa Times where he was a writer who quickly learned he better start taking his

own photos (per his agreement with Tampa Times’ Managing Editor and mentor, H. Doyle Harvill, Norcross retained sole ownership and all rights to the photographs). Norcross—now a working musician trying to make it through two years of lost gigs—culled through his negatives to land at “Press Pass” which is now available on a 16GB USB flash drive which includes the photos, and 34 accompanying reviews. Norcross—who also ran the 18th String Coffeehouse & Music Emporium near his old stomping grounds of USF Tampa—has offered a handful of photos all shot at the old Tampa Stadium (aka The Big Sombrero). The shots (except for one of Mick) are from a time when some photogs were granted near unfettered access to the golden age of rock and roll. See more from other shows—including Elvis at Curtis Hixon Hall, Pink Floyd at Fort Homer Hesterly Armory and New York Dolls at the Old Florida State Fairgrounds—by visiting cltampa. com/magazine. Get a copy of “Press Pass” at Tampa’s Mojo Books & Records (2540 E. Fowler Ave.) or online via presspasstampa.com.

Thomas Crane debuts new short-film music video. By John W. Allman

W

hile Halloween is usually reserved more for scaring than giving, Tampa Bay filmmaker and musician Thomas Crane is giving fans a dose of both with the debut of his new single, “Monsters Walk Among Us,” and its accompanying video, which he directed and stars in. Both the single and the 7-plus-minute short film were released this month. Crane, through his company killDevil Films, has been on a tear of late, traveling the U.S. to direct music videos for Sativa, Once Human and Todd La Torre of Queensryche, just to name a few. “Monsters Walk Among Us” marks his first new music since 2019’s “Spook House,” but many fans also will remember him from the band Marion Crane. Crane is the true definition of a triple threat. He not only writes and performs but also directs. In 2019, he received acclaim from the horror community with the release of his award-winning first film, “Halloween Party,” which was reviewed here and also is available to stream on Amazon Prime. The video for “Monsters Walk Among Us” is a blast of rapid-fire edits, bodacious femme fatales and Crane as The Gemini Killer wreaking havoc

and racking up a significant body count, all with a devilish grin and a gleam in his eye. Crane commands the screen, along with a trio of female accomplices—Alanna Dawn as Kitten, Melody Parker as Jayne and Tampa’s own burlesque icon Franki Markstone, who pulls double duty as the scantily clad Cookie and a TV reporter detailing Crane’s killing spree—as his character evolves from sociopath to social (and political) influencer. “I thought it was an interesting concept to write a song through a character and to continue that with the video,” Crane said. “The lyrics are the Gemini Killer’s billet-doux, taunting authorities, embracing notoriety, and I wanted him to have style and panache. He’s a bit of a troll. There’s definitely some social commentary in the video, about how the media loves to embrace villains for clicks and views.” We got an early peek at Crane’s creation, and it’s a pretty safe bet that people are going to truly dig both. Visually, Crane is mining Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers,” while musically his new track reminds you what made 2001-era Rob Zombie so damn good. That’s not to say he’s mimicking either artist. Crane has his own distinct style and sound that shines through.

C Jon Snodgrass & His Buddies w/ Rad Owl/Reconciler Snodgrass is back at the West River venue he last played in 2019, marking the Americana punk rocker’s first time in Tampa since before the pandemic. So let’s welcome the Drag the River songwriter back as he brings along His Buddies (aka Sam Bolle on bass and drummer Neil Hennessy). Minnesota melodic punk outfit Rad Owl “featuring ex-members of Align, Samiam, Gratitude, Marble & The Stereo” and Atlanta’s hardcore act Reconciler open the Thursday night show. If you can’t get a sitter, kids can come with a guardian. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa) C Moving Targets w/Slap of Reality Seminole Heights record store Microgroove was once a surefire place to catch a great band on occasion, but the pandemic put the kibosh on that. Celebrated alternative hardcore band Moving Targets is changing that tune for this intimate show. The gig is so intimate, in fact, that only 40 tickets were sold. “I’ve been a big fan of Moving Targets for 30 years,” Microgroove and New Granada Records owner Keith Ulrey told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “A band I was in the early-‘90s, even played a show with them in Bremen, Germany.” Though Moving Targets never had much commercial success, the Hüsker Dü-influenced band was a huge part of the ‘80s Boston underground music scene which led the group to land to a record deal with Taang!—a label that launched the careers of The Lemonheads and Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Microgroove, Tampa)

FRI 29

C Buddy Guy w/Kenny Wayne Shepherd Blues legend Buddy Guy is making his way back to Ruth Eckerd Hall where he last performed in 2019. The 85-year-old vocalist and guitarist has won seven Grammys, and living legends like this are sadly few and far between these days. Another blues staple, Kenny Wayne Shepherd brings a full band with him—though hopefully he leaves his Confederate flag regalia at home (he seems to have let it go, after it cost him a Blues Music Award nomination this year). Masks are only required if you’re not vaxxed, but don’t you want to do all that you can to protect Buddy Guy? (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater) C The Backseat Lovers w/Camp Howard While live-streaming Lollapalooza via Hulu this summer, The Backseat Lovers caught my ear so much that I stopped my chores and watched the indie-rock outfit’s whole set. Though only together since 2018, the

quartet transcends time with an aesthetic straight outta the ‘70s, (and sort of the ‘90s) and music reminiscent of a jammy Pinback. Just listen to “Watch Your Mouth” and hear for yourself. The Utah band’s debut Tampa performance seems to be sold-out, but it’s also playing Okeechobee Musical Festival in March, so keep that stacked bill on your radar, If you’ve got tickets to the show, get there early and see Camp Howard—which was last in the area for a 2017 set at The Bends—work through its sexy new single, “Cañón.” (Crowbar, Ybor City) Clint Black Country singer Clint Black performs an intimate show at the Seminole Hard Rock’s event center. Though most of the black hat-wearing celebrity’s biggest hits were in the ‘90s, his career is as strong as his 30-year marriage to actress Lisa Hartman. If you’re looking for more of a tailgating-in-aparking-lot big ol’ country show, just book a room at the Hard Rock because Jason Aldean brings his “Back in the Saddle” tour to MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre (on the other side of I-4) on Saturday. The LiveNation promoted event requires either a negative test (within 72-hours) or proof of vaccination—pretty ironic since Aldean and ultra-conservative wife have been openly against vaccine mandates. Guess it’s different when a paycheck is involved. (Hard Rock Event Center at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tampa) C Erykah Badu w/Goodie Mob/Scarface You better call on Tyrone because the reigning queen of neo-soul is back on tour, and most reports from recent shows by everyone’s favorite Badoula indicate that Fat Belly Bella is near—or at—the top of her game and reinventing her storied 24-year-old catalog in unprecedented ways. A couple of hip-hop legends open the show. (Amalie Arena, Tampa) C Nick Warren w/ Brian Busto British DJ Nick Warren makes his Tampa debut with this 3-hour set. One-half of electronic duo Way Out West, Warren spent his early DJ years touring with Massive Attack. He still holds rank, performing all over the world including at Burning Man, and works A&R for Hope Recordings, trying to find the next, well, Nick Warren. Tampa staple Brian Busto opens the almost sold-out Halloween weekend show. (The Castle, Ybor City) Psychedelic Furs w/Royston Langdon Halloween weekend seems like the perfect time to see “The Ghost in You” live (see more Halloween-specific shows on p. 44). Psychedelic Furs vocalist Richard Butler and his bassist brother Tim Butler have led the British band through a long and successful run putting out classics like “Love My Way” and “Pretty in Pink”—inspiration for the John Hughes’ film of the same name. Supporting is Spacehog’s Royston Langdon—aka Liv Tyler’s baby daddy—opening the show. ICYMI, Spacehog had one of the best one hit wonders of all time with 1994’s “In the

going to need help with that pronunciation.) Fifty bucks gets you a balcony seat, if you’re more of a voyeur these days. #notjudging (Orpheum, Ybor City)

C The Rolling Stones w/Ghost Hounds Most bands won’t get one call to open for the Rolling Stones, but Ghost Hounds got two. And this gig shutting down the No Filter tour is extremely significant. “Opening up for The Stones at any time is an extreme honor, but due to the recent passing of Charlie Watts we feel as though it’s even more significant,” Hounds guitarist Johnny Baab told CL. “Every night that we open for them is an opportunity to pay tribute to the legend that he was by going out and playing the best show we can.” The Pittsburgh band is supporting its sophomore LP, A Little Calamity, when it kicks off one of the summer’s most anticipated shows at 8 p.m. (Raymond James Stadium, Tampa)

C Isaiah Rashad Jannus is coming in hot this week with two stellar post-Halloween hip-hop shows on both ends of the dial. Isaiah Rashad is up first, repping ‘90s-influenced jazzy goods. The Chattanooga emcee isn’t a stranger to Tampa, but it’s been a minute (read: four years) since he’s been in town, so the Tuesday night “Little Sunny’s Awesome Vacation” tour should be a good catch up. On Wednesday, Louisiana rapper—and really high jumper—Kevin Gates performs in the same St. Pete outdoor venue he sold-out in 2018. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

TUES 02

C On the One: Noveliss w/Mike Mass/ Lele/Spon/Tvpes/Slopfunkdust/more “On the One”—a new event series driven by Mike Mass and Wave Theory event— focuses on producers (Lele, Spon, Tvpes, Slopfunkdust) and emcees (Perception, Vern Sr., K III). For the main course, the inaugural night brings in Detroit’s Noveliss (part of hip-hop group Clear Soul Forces) to this Ybor City restaurant and venue. The lyricist is also a samurai-in-training and brings a lot of MF Doom, Nas, and Redman-influence to his music. Mass plays host, per usual, and DJs DFaz and Deejay Kellan provide the in between jams. (The Bricks, Ybor City)

Dying Fetus w/Terror/Brand of Sacrifice/ Vitriol/Frozen Soul/Sanguisugabogg Death metal outfit Dying Fetus headlines a stacked weekday show, and there’s no better place to experience the genre than Orpheum. The Maryland band formed in the early-‘90s, but now John Gallagher (guitar and vocals) is the only original member still involved. Doors are at 6 p.m., so there’s plenty of time to pack in the openers which include Los Angeles hardcore act Terror, Vitriol out of Portland and Columbus, Ohio’s Sanguisugabogg. (I’m

Freak nasty

By Stephanie Powers and Ray Roa

T

ampa Bay is having a much different Halloween than it did in 2020. Last year, vaccines were about as real as Candyman, but now that most of you folks have used your tremendous brains and privilege to get poked once and twice (some of you thrice), it’s a little safer to get out and play. Still, don’t be scared to wear a mask over your mask should you choose to ghoul out to Skipper’s Smokehouse, Armature Works—or any one of these Halloween concerts happening in Tampa Bay this weekend.

Freaker’s Ball: Legendary JCs Freaker’s Ball’s “Fresh Outta F#cks” theme is something we can all relate to. Winter Park funk and soul masters The Legendary JCs perform show where no presale tickets are available. The newly reopened venue is keeping its traditional costume parade and costume alive, so dress up. It’s a packed weekend with Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy play Halloween night. Friday, Oct. 29. 8 p.m. $10. Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa. skipperssmokehouse.com

Haunted Carnival w/Carnage/Duke Dumont/ DJ Ku/Malaa/Soul Circus Cowboys It’s not surprising to see that Tampa Armature Works has booked a four-day “Haunted Carnival,” but it is a little wild to see that world renowned EDM DJ Carnage is part of the festivities. The 30-year-old Guatemalan DJ who last played WTR in Tampa is the headliner on Friday, Oct. 29, and his performance comes along with others from Duke Dumont and Juicy M (Oct. 30), Malaa (Halloween night) and Soul Circus Cowboys (Oct. 28). The carnival, which is taking over 200,000 square-feet of the Tampa Heights gathering place—located at 1910 N Ola Ave.—promises family-friendly entertainment (think ferris wheels, cotton candy) and says that after 7 p.m., the venue will turn a bit more risque and spooky (scary carnival rides). There’s also a $10,000 costume context. Tickets are as low as $5 for guests under 12 years old and as high as $45 depending on what kind of access you want for the concerts. Thursday-Sunday. Oct. 28-31. $5 & up. Armature Works, Tampa. piedpiper.uvtix.com

The Holy Terror John Nowicki leads The Holy Terror for a spooky afternoon show during Soul Food Sunday. The ensemble blends “outlaw country, jazz, metal, and chamber music” which all goes perfect with chicken and waffles, IMO. Sunday, Oct. 31, 3 p.m. No cover (reservations recommended). Do you realize By Dan Savage

I’m a 33-year-old straight female, been with my husband for 10 years, married for six. When we first started dating, I was an extremely jealous person. Fortunately, I got it under control with lots of therapy. But once I did, I started having fantasies about him hooking up with other people. We incorporated these fantasies in the bedroom—as a fantasy—and it was insanely hot. Anyways, I had a baby a year ago. It took some time for my libido to come back, but she is back with a vengeance. I’m horny all the time. I’m so horny that when my husband mentioned that an old friend of his who lives in another city was getting flirty, I immediately encouraged him to see if anything might come of it. With my blessing, he shared with her that I might be a cuckquean. (Sticking with “might” for now, as we’ve never actually done this). She was interested, and the flirting escalated. Now she’s coming to town for work. Having never actually done anything like this, I started to feel unsexy jealousy creeping back in. We decided that he wouldn’t do anything with her, just grab a quick drink. But she asked to have dinner with both of us instead. That changed the math and I agreed to dinner. But I find myself vacillating between titillation and anxiety. Am I there to watch or participate? (I’m bi, so it’s not out of the question.) They’ve already got a rapport going and I’m insecure about feeling left out. I’m writing because I don’t know how to process this cognitive dissonance. One minute I’m so excited about realizing this fantasy that I’m sneaking away to get myself off just thinking about it. The next minute I’m worrying about what will happen if I see him giving her more attention than he gives me. I don’t know how to make sense of what I’m feeling. Am I really a cuckquean if I feel this conflicted?—Completely Confused Cuckquean

“That emotional angst comes with a beautifully complex cuckolding relationship,” said Venus. “To be able to process and overcome damaging jealousy and turn it into something highly erotic is truly an emotional feat. It’s something I admire so much about cuckolds and cuckqueans.” While cuck angst can be confusing, CCC, it’s not disqualifying. If your angst is manageable and the rewards are worth the effort—and if your partner can help you manage it in an affirming way—you can get to a place where you want to realize your fantasies. But like, say, bungee jumping, CCC, it’s still gonna be scary. “One minute it can feel great and the next minute it can feel terrifying,” said Venus. “But your partner plays a big role in providing reassurance and support for you during all of this. I know of a wife who wrote a thoughtful letter to her cuckold husband in advance of her first encounter with another man. It was for him to read if his cuck angst became overwhelming, and it turned out to be exactly what he needed at that moment. He was able to work through the anxiety and make room for the excitement and thrill of thinking about his wife with another man.” The partner of a cuck has to strike a tricky balance. You’re going to need your husband to acknowledge your insecurities and offer reassurances to minimize them, CCC, but you don’t want those insecurities to disappear. For most cucks, eroticized insecurities are at the heart of the cuckolding/cuckqueaning kink— no insecurities, no thrills. And while this can sound like a lot of effort to someone who doesn’t share this kink (or have a kink that requires emotional prep and aftercare), the rewards—the experiences you’ll share, the connections you’ll make, the orgasms you’ll have—can be great. “But be prepared for some ups and downs,” warned Venus, “because cuckolding is truly an emotional rollercoaster.” And please—please, please, please—don’t rush into your first cuckquean experience just because this particular woman happens to be in town this particular weekend. “Taking things slow is the

SAVAGE LOVE

When I shared your letter with Venus, the host of the “Venus Cuckoldress Podcast,” she responded with three words and one exclamation point: “The elusive cuckquean!” Cuckolding is a loving, consensual, “one-sided open relationship,” as Venus likes to describe it, and most self-identified cuckolds are men. It’s rare to encounter a cuckquean in the wild—that is, a woman who gets off on her husband or boyfriend sleeping with other women. I’ve received hundreds of letters over the years from men who wanted to be cuckolds (some gay, most straight or bi), but only a handful of letters from women like you, CCC. You are a rare flower, a black swan, a precious gem. And what you describe—that feeling of arousal and dread, titillation and anxiety—is so common among wannabe and even practicing cucks that Venus gave it a name (and a whole segment of her podcast): cuck angst.

key to success,” said Venus. “There’s always room to move forward with flirty teasing but having to take steps backwards due to jumping into things too quickly is never easy.” It’s not easy to bounce back from a bad threesome that accidentally triggered feelings of jealousy, CCC, but it can be done. A bad first experience with cuckolding—where one person typically wants to be made to feel jealous and/or inadequate—can destroy a relationship. Learning where the line is between “good/bad” feelings (sexy jealousy) and “bad/bad” feelings (unsexy jealousy) takes time and not just good communication, CCC, but excessive communication. Follow @CuckoldressV on Twitter and check out venusconnections.com her personals site for men and women seeking cuckold relationships. I’m a 30-year lesbian who listens to your podcast and reads your column religiously. I’m in a longterm monogamous relationship, and I’m very much in love with my girlfriend. I recently told her that I want to explore my kinks and my sexuality and may need an open or at least a monogamish relationship. It looks like she isn’t into that. Perhaps we a r e

sexually incompatible and need to part, but what if I act on my fantasies (swinging, orgies, BDSM) and then find out that I’m not really into any of it? Then I would have given up an otherwise good relationship for nothing. I’ve never tried any of the things I mention, so what if they’re just things I should masturbate about? Mainly, I get very turned on by the thought of being fucked by a group of women wearing strap-ons. Sometimes I feel like I’m on the verge of a life-changing sexual discovery and other times I feel like I just want to stay home with my dog. Where do I go from here? Should I continue just masturbating to these fantasies or do you think that a glorious kinky future

awaits me?—Suddenly Thinking Repeatedly About Passionate Orgies Now You’re gonna have to make your best guess, STRAPON. If you think staying with your current girlfriend and not acting on these fantasies and never getting to fully explore these fantasies will cause you to resent your girlfriend, and your resentment will become a cancer that eventually kills your relationship—if that’s your best guess—then you should end things with your girlfriend now. But if you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the experience of being pegged by a roomful of hot women because you’re filled with regret about dumping your girlfriend for something so “trivial” as a few easier-to-fantasize-aboutthan-realize sexual fantasies—if that’s your best guess—then make up your mind never to act on these fantasies. (I put “trivial” in quotes because I don’t think there’s anything trivial about sexual fantasies.) But I gotta say… when you think about setting these fantasies aside… it’s not your girlfriend you see yourself cozying up with at home, STRAPON, it’s your dog. Well, I’m here from the kinky future to tell you that you can attend an orgy or BDSM play party and go home to your dog afterwards. So, you can have your orgies and your play parties and your dog too; it’s your girlfriend you may not be able to have. But is it your girlfriend you want? Or is it your dog? If you want it all—your girlfriend, your dog, your adventures—there may still be a way. Y o u say it “looks like” your girlfriend isn’t interested in opening the relationship. Which means she didn’t rule it out. So it’s my turn to venture a guess, STRAPON: I’m thinking your girlfriend might’ve had a different reaction to your request to open your relationship if you had invited her along on these proposed adventures. Instead of saying, “I’d like to have hot sexual ON JO E N E W T experiences involving other people on my own while you wait at home with the dog,” try saying this: “I’d like us to have some hot sexual adventures together—you and me, the two of us, and some hot women who dig us both!” Inviting your girlfriend to run around with you, STRAPON, instead of asking for her permission to run around on her, could get you from “looks like a no” to the kind of qualified yes that can become—with time, patience, and open and honest communication—an enthusiastic yes.
