unday was World Car-Free Day, and some Fancy Women rode through downtown Tampa to do their part. The group joined others from around the world who’ve been organizing the ride for 9 years, starting with the first Fancy Women Bike Ride in Turkey where Sema Gür wanted to challenge the male-dominated cycling world in her home country. “The event is organized by women who are enthusiastic about convincing their peers to cycle every day. Organizers want to create awareness to increase safety on roads, create urban cycling infrastructure and plan bike-friendly services,” a release says. Investigation exposes huge racial disparity in TPD crime-free housing program.

Under the changes to the program, the city will only inform landlords about certain serious drug and violent felonies. A Tampa Police Department captain will also have to sign off on notices sent, and landlords will be notified only about arrests that happen on their properties.

Lewis says the NAACP office gets complaints every day about problems Black Tampeños face.

From police harassment, to housing and other economic issues, Lewis says Black people, and poor people in general, are treated as “secondclass citizens.”

“Many individuals receiving bike citations are involved in criminal activity,” then-Police Chief Castor told the Times in 2015. “We have an obligation to address the individual issues that plague each neighborhood.”

Much like the dehumanizing use of the word “plague” in this statement, the “Renting While Black” program refers to renters involved with crime as ‘weeds’, and encourages landlords to evict them.

Last week, Dr. Jason Stanley, Yale philosophy professor and author of “How Fascism Works,” condemned Tampa’s program and said the language used in the presentation to landlords is “extraordinarily dehumanizing.”

Former Tampa city councilman Frank Reddick called for an investigation into the city of Tampa at the time of “Biking While Black,” which determined that Black bicyclists were unjustly continued on page 16

ast Saturday, Mayor Jane Castor announced reforms to the city’s controversial crime-free multi-housing program, which flagged Black renters for eviction and sparked concern across the country. The announcement came after the mayor had previously doubled down on the program following the Tampa Bay Times investigation into its effect on the Black community.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) say that the reforms are not enough.

“This city continues to treat African American people as though they’re second class citizens with no rights,” Yvette Lewis, President of the Hillsborough chapter of the NAACP, tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. During an NAACP meeting last week, Lewis called the crime-free multi-housing program “Renting while Black.” She told CL the name is a nod to “Biking While Black,” a controversial program that targeted Black bikers during Castor’s tenure as police chief.

“It sickens my stomach and it’s a shame before God,” Lewis adds. “The program needs to end, and what about apologies and compensation for all of those families whose lives were ruined?”

Last week, the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union, as part of a national coalition, sent a letter to Mayor Castor and Tampa City Council calling for an end to the crime-free multi-housing program. Lewis feels like their demands have been ignored, in lieu of reforms that do not fix the way Black people are treated in Tampa.

“Everyone deserves to live in a safe neighborhood, regardless of their economic status,” an email from Castor’s office to CL reads. “We always evaluate and improve programs like this, and we are happy to review it further. But as violent crime spikes in cities across America, this is no time to stop effective collaborations between the community, law enforcement, and property managers that are making our city safer.”

However, according to the Times investigation, there’s no evidence that the program helps reduce violent crimes. Many of the families

“None of us support violence in our communities,” Lewis says, “But you shouldn’t have to violate someone’s civil rights to address those problems. And this program by Mayor Castor operates like Black people are the only ones who commit crime.”

She points out that while crime also occurs in white communities, the program concentrated on Black neighborhoods. The program was evicting Black renters at the same time that Tampa was under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for the “Biking While Black” program targeting bicyclists in the same communities.

In 2015, Castor defended “Biking While Black,” with an argument similar to her defense of “Renting while Black.”

Yale professor and author of ‘How Fascism Works’ condemns Tampa’s crime-free multihousing program Since 2013, Tampa Police Department (TPD) has met with landlords to guide them through eight-hour trainings about crime and evictions.

During the trainings, police showed each landlord slides suggesting that those who commit crime are something other than human.

“Criminals are like weeds…” reads one of the slides from a presentation that was introduced by former TPD police chief Brian Dugan.

The next slide reads, “The BEST way to kill a weed… Is to uproot it!

Yale Philosophy Professor Jason Stanley calls this language “extraordinarily dehumanizing.”

“No police department should be using this language about people in their city,” Stanley

tells CL. Stanley wrote the books “How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them” and “How Propaganda Works.”

“Calling human beings weeds is pregenocidal,” Stanley says. What he means by pre-genocidal is that before any act of violence or ostracizing of a certain group of people, there is, “a need to legitimize treating them in a way that you shouldn’t treat citizens who you’re sworn to protect,” Stanley says.

As previously mentioned a new investigation by the Tampa Bay Times revealed that TPD teamed up with landlords to flag renters who committed crimes, including some who were arrested but never convicted of a crime.

was part of the program’s training.

Of the 1,100 renters flagged by the program, about 90% were Black. Many of the crimes were petty (including panhandling). Mayor Jane Castor, who started the program when she was police chief, defended it to the Times, saying it reduced crime. But the Times pointed out that while crime went down at the places where the program was enacted, it was also going down across Tampa at the same time.

The drop in crime at participating properties was in tandem with a 25% drop in violent and property crime reports across the city, according to the investigation.

Castor doubled down on her stance after public outcry, and sent a letter to the NAACP

of a monarchic, harsh, class system in 19th century France. Charles Dickens wrote about similar struggles of the poor in England. “This is straight out of the annals of the worst treatment of poor people in modern history,” Stanley adds. “And it just doesn’t add up—for one, punishments are supposed to fit the crime. And punishing people into desperation only increases crime.

When people are desperate, they’re going to commit more crime.”

Stanley explains that it should be obvious to police and Tampa officials that criminals are not another species. “They’re human beings who do things, but they never lose their status as a human being,” he says.

CL reached out to the city’s communications team to see if they have a response to Stanley’s condemnation of the program and its language, but did not receive a response. We also emailed TPD with the same question, and asked if the presentation’s “weeds” language came from the national crime-free housing program, or if it was added to the presentation by TPD, but did not receive a response. We’ll update this post if we hear back.

Stanley highlighted the racial aspect of the program, saying it reminds him of “ethnic cleansing.”

“You’re driving people from their own cities, their homes, and you do so by essentially criminalizing poverty, and treating them in ways you would never treat other types of people,” Stanley says. “No one’s going to see a whole middle class white family evicted whose kids were caught shoplifting. That will never happen.”

When asked why anyone would defend such a program, Stanley referred to a disturbing past.

“This is the history of politics in the United States, you know, racial politics sells, and that’s how you win elections,” Stanley says. “You vilify a group like ‘criminals’ and say you’re going to crack down on them to fight crime.”

Stanley referred to U.S. politicians’ disparate reactions to the opioid crisis—a mainly white issue that was met with empathy and care—versus the crack cocaine crisis, which was met with a “war on crime.”

Tampa is not alone in its participation in crime-free multi housing programs. Since 1992, when the program started by a police officer in Arizona, similar programs have spread across the country and been the matter of controversy in other states for targeting renters of color.

The American Civil Liberties union has sued in several cities based on the racial aspect of the program.

“You know, we’ve lost sight of our humanity when we do this, when we call our fellow citizens weeds,” Stanley says, “And fascism is an ideology that justifies this anti-humanity.

It’s that it’s all about force and violence, and, ‘law and order.’”

defending the program and explaining why Tampa would keep it going. Now, a nationwide coalition of legal and civil rights groups has called on Castor and the city to end the program, under threat of legal action. City Council chairman Orlando Gudes—who was a Tampa cop for nearly 26 years— also questioned the program, asking Castor to suspend it for 90 days for review.

Castor told the NAACP she’s heard the calls to suspend the program, but cited a nationwide increase in violent crime in her decision to ignore them.

There is an increase in gun crime across the U.S., but experts still don’t agree on the exact reason why, and there’s no evidence the crime-

burdened. Lewis says that because of Tampa’s history of racist practices, “Renting While Black” is a sign that a more widespread civil rights investigation into the city needs to happen.

The ACLU has taken a special interest in this case and has threatened legal action if the program does not end.

The Florida ACLU’s Tampa chapter told CL that it’s glad the mayor has indicated that there are issues that need to be looked at, and addressed the proposed changes. “We don’t think this program requires the Band-Aid she is proposing; it needs to be terminated and replaced with a program that reduces crime but doesn’t contribute to discrimination,” the group said in an email to CL. Representatives of both the local ACLU and NAACP chapters had a Tuesday meeting with Mayor Castor and members of the civil rights groups to discuss the situation. Lewis says Mayor Castor requested that only people from the groups who were involved in sending the demand letter be on the call.

CL reached out to the mayor’s communications director about the stance of the civil rights groups and to confirm the details of the meeting the groups claim is occurring, but did not receive a response.

Stanley says that regardless of any “law and order” argument, being evicted for committing petty crimes is an archaic and brutal form of punishment. “These are incredibly horrific sentences from the [Times investigation] you sent me, which involve treatment of humans who committed petty crimes; it’s reminiscent of ‘Les Miserables,’ or something you’d read by Dickens,” Stanley says.

Tracing waters helps us see how we have engineered growing crises.

A

Goliath grouper washed up along Lassing Park, just south of downtown St. Pete.

My wife Julie was walking the dog and thought the enormous fish was a dead manatee.

We went back to check it out. City sanitation workers were already on the scene, snapping photos and wondering how they would haul this enormous carcass (adults can reach to 800 pounds) over the beachhead. None of this felt natural.

Karenia brevis, or red tide, had churned up the west coast of Florida, starting from Charlotte Harbor, as it typically does, where the Caloosahatchee feeds its filth from Lake Okeechobee into the Gulf of Mexico. K. brevis occurs naturally; these tiny dinoflagellates (one-cell organisms with a whip-like tail) bloom 10-40 miles offshore. The trouble then comes closer to land. Because humans have juiced up our estuaries with sewage dumps, grass clippings, agricultural and road run-off, the blooms intensify.

Add to these indignities the spill at Piney Point, which coupled with a dry early summer ratcheting (up salinity in estuarine waters), drew Karenia brevis into Tampa Bay for a fish kill beyond any in recent memory.

Again, this is not natural.

Try to imagine the end of the Goliath grouper that washed up along Lassing Park. The very name, Epinephelus itajara, reminds me of Big Bird’s imaginary friend, Mr. Snuffleupagus.

This protected and hermaphroditic, refrigerator-sized cousin of the Chilean sea bass likes deep water. The bay is too shallow. As red tide moved in, releasing a nasty neurotoxin, the grouper followed shipping lanes carved into Tampa Bay. A quick glance at nautical charts suggests a route up the St. Pete harbor channel. Somewhere south of downtown, the fish lost control of its fins, started swimming in circles and vomiting, then the gills shut down—causing death by suffocation. A tide then washed the bloated carcass over the sand bar off Lassing Park, where my wife mistook it for a manatee.

Over the month of July sanitation and parks workers collected dead marine life that was reported in the thousands of tons. Exact numbers vary. City Council was told 1,200 tons; a source from the inside reported 1,600 to me.

The magnitude of loss should get us thinking.

As the kill peaked along the bay, I did my small part. I walked the thin strand of eroding

beach at Lassing, gathering enough varieties of marine life to rival an aquarium. Along with my bucket and grabber, I carried my phone, my notebook, and a pen to catalogue the cost of this self-inflicted catastrophe.

Puffers, cowfish and bottom-feeding cats took the worst hit. I found reds, horseshoe crabs, alewives, toadfish, pinfish, sheepshead, snapper, catfish, a cownose ray swarmed in blowflies, and snook. I picked up the fish, noted the species in my

To honor the grouper, and this summer’s continuing bloom, I’ve decided to launch my own creekshed project. (My “City Wilds” colleague, Amanda Hagood, will offer occasional dispatches of her own.) My plan is to trace the waters that feed into Bayboro Harbor

American eels were a big question mark.

Friends remarked they had never seen so many.

Eels live most of their lives in freshwater, in rivers and even springs, but a little bit of research suggests they were in migration from their spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea. The mind reels. Eels do not belong off Lassing Park.

Looking for perspective, I turned to my environmentalist friends. I asked historian Jack

and Tampa Bay, off south St. Pete. Imagine a reverse letter “C” over the lower part of the Pinellas Peninsula, with the Booker and Salt Creeks conjoined like Siamese twins by USF St. Pete.

Start at the headwaters of Booker Creek—somewhere in the North 30s (Avenue and Street). Under city parks, linked by sewers, lie the remnants of a creek’s headwaters. I’ll follow the stream into the city’s history, beneath the Interstate,

past Tropicana Field and African-American neighborhoods that were razed in the name of urban renewal, through leafy Roser Park, and into Bayboro Harbor.

I will travel by kayak and through research archives.

From Bayboro Harbor, I will switch course and paddle up Salt Creek—through the Bartlett Park and Harbordale neighborhoods, into Lake Maggiore (a tidal estuary that the city insists on managing as fresh), to the sandy spine underneath Interstate 275, where the creek has its source and where a gas station is now being built.

From the west side of 34th Street, I will trace the outer reaches of Clam Bayou to the dredged channel off the Gulfport marina.

Over the next two years or so, I plan to dispatch a column every other month, following this path. Again, I’ll get some help.

So why do this?

Maybe the grouper was a wake-up call. Every indication shows Tampa Bay to be on the front edge of climate change. None of this is speculation. Or hysteria. Tampa Bay residents sit on a front line of the Anthropocene, the new geologic age, named for our own species. Boundaries between land or water (the “littoral”) will shift.

Urbanized creeks mark this line between human and nature—or what my geographer friend Tony Abbott calls the “literal littoral.”

Our current crises are a product of how we choose to live. Following a creekshed helps us see how we have engineered growing crises.

As for the last fish kill in Tampa Bay, yeah, blame Piney Point. And yes, we all know, Karenia brevis bloomed long before people started trashing the Gulf. But it’s time to take stock of our role in shaping the natural world.

My local vigil at Lassing Park ended after a week. K. brevis moved up the coast and the city collected the bulk of the dead fish. Human life returned. A person practiced yoga; someone else read under the shade of the palm. The city, overwhelmed by the clean up, had fallen behind on mowing cycles. Residents near Lassing Park like their clear, unobstructed view of Tampa Bay. Instead of mangroves and oyster beds, neighbors clamor for a mowed lawn. Sigh.

On the morning I stumbled onto the foulsmelling ray, grass clipping bunched along the water’s edge. The next big rain or tide would send the nitrogen-rich waste straight into Tampa Bay, feeding algae and compromising the water’s health.

This has got to stop. It will not stop. But as our streams run into the sea, in short time becoming the sea, at least we can chronicle the course.

The Democrats’ circular firing squad is taking aim.

T

his long, miserable summer ends Tuesday, not a moment too soon for President Joe Biden. Not all of his problems have been his own doing—not entirely, at least.

Afghanistan’s collapse last month had been all but inevitable since the Trump administration signed the Doha Agreement in February 2020, effectively surrendering the country to the Taliban. Even so, scenes of the chaotic withdrawal—capped off by the military dronemurdering children—will haunt the administration for years to come.

The COVID delta variant spread unfettered largely because of Republican vaccine resistance, with GOP governors in Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Alabama, South Dakota, and elsewhere granting the virus a license to kill—and in Florida, prohibiting local governments or private businesses from even trying to stop it.

As the delta variant flourished, the economic recovery slowed.

With his approval ratings battered, Biden’s domestic agenda is now imperiled by his own party’s timidity and deference to institutional anachronisms—its insistence on playing inside the procedural lines it has drawn—which gives cover to knee-jerk obstructionism and cameraseeking egoism.

Ultimately, everything comes back to the filibuster. Because Senate Democrats—most vocally, Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, though they’re not alone—have refused to eliminate or reform the 60-vote threshold for all non-budgetary legislation. That hands Sen. Mitch McConnell a veto.

Manchin and Sinema spent the spring negotiating down Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure deal to $1.2 trillion, caving to Republican demands to excise key climate, mass transit, and revenue provisions to get Republican votes.

The infrastructure bill passed—a victory for comity—though the legislation doesn’t come close to addressing the country’s needs.

Progressives were nonplussed. In the House, they say they’ll only support the infrastructure bill if it’s paired with Biden’s 10-year budget plan, which spends $3.5 trillion on climate and social programs. As a reconciliation bill, it can circumvent the filibuster and pass the Senate with only Democrats. But it needs all 50 of them.

And it needs House Democrats, with their slim majority, to stick together, too.

Here come the power plays.

Last week, the Congressional Progressive Caucus declared that it has the votes to kill the infrastructure deal if it’s separated from

the reconciliation package. Once infrastructure passes, after all, progressives will have no leverage to ensure that moderates toe the line on reconciliation. But moderates say they’ll block reconciliation if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi misses a Sept. 27 deadline to pass the infrastructure deal.

The circular firing squad is taking aim.

Sinema, a leading beneficiary of Big Pharma’s largesse, has told the White House she won’t support a proposal that allows the government to negotiate Medicare prescription-drug prices, which the reconciliation bill counts on for $700 billion in savings. Manchin says the $3.5 trillion price tag is $2 trillion too high; he wants to gut the child tax credit. And after earning $500,000 in stock dividends from a coal brokerage firm last year—and reaping more fossil fuel contributions than anyone else in the Senate—he’ll also water down the budget’s initiatives to combat climate change.

Amid all of this, the Senate’s parliamentarian ruled that Democrats can’t include immigration reform in their reconciliation bill.

While they have options—as the Senate’s presiding officer, Vice President Kamala Harris could overrule the parliamentarian—fealty to

institutional norms will almost certainly trump campaign promises, as it did earlier this year when the parliamentarian rejected a minimum wage hike in the American Rescue Plan.

If it continues unabated, this Keystone Kops routine all but guarantees a 2010-style wipeout.

In the shorter term, it could also lead to a government shutdown and crash the global economy. Just as in 2011, McConnell has threatened not to extend the federal government’s borrowing limit. Unlike in 2011, when Republicans used the debt ceiling to force President Obama to make drastic spending cuts, McConnell doesn’t have an agenda beyond political calculation. Debtceiling votes are unpopular; he wants the other guys to take them.

“The country must never default,” he told the newsletter Punchbowl last week. “The debt ceiling will need to be raised. But who does that depends on who the American people elect.”

Democrats have attached the debt ceiling to a spending bill to keep the government open beyond Sept. 30. That will require 60 votes. If McConnell holds his line, the bill will fail, the government will close, and global markets will enter a tailspin. Democrats either have to call McConnell’s bluff—and hope he’s bluffing— or attach the debt ceiling to the already-wobbly reconciliation bill.

Again, their options wouldn’t be so constrained if they simply did away with the filibuster. The debt ceiling wouldn’t be a problem.

Neither would the opinion of the Senate parliamentarian. Senate Dems would still have to placate Sinema and Manchin, but they wouldn’t have to cram all of their priorities into one messy reconciliation bill.

Earlier this month, Rolling Stone reported that Biden told Democratic leaders he’ll pressure moderates to carve out an exception to the filibuster for voting-rights legislation. Whether he’ll sway Manchin and Sinema remains to be seen. (I’m skeptical.) Broader filibuster reform seems about as likely as the diet pills advertised in your Facebook feed actually working.

Democratic moderates have convinced themselves that they’re doing themselves and the party a favor by gumming up the works, hoping that immunizes them to next year’s attack ads about runaway spending. It won’t. And it wouldn’t matter if it did.

That’s not how midterms work. They’re referenda on the country’s direction, and they almost always favor the party out of power. If there’s a wave election, moderates get wiped out first. Their chances are almost wholly tied to Biden’s popularity, and Biden’s popularity is in no small part tied to getting both the infrastructure and reconciliation bills through Congress.

The Democrats’ circular firing squad isn’t going to take out Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But it has many of the moderates who are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory dead in its sights.

fter 7 years of telling its loyal followers to stop parking on Fern, Tampa’s Angry Chair Brewing is giving its fans a parking lot… that’s two miles away at the old Brew Bus location. The mega-popular Seminole Heights brewery made the announcement last Wednesday with a video that shows Angry Chair co-founder Ryan Dowdle waking up, ripping off a morning fart and then driving to work, right past the current Angry Chair taproom at the corner of E Fern Street and N Florida Avenue towards the old Brew Bus, which closed over the summer.

Brew Bus has plans of its own to move down the street, but Angry Chair wrote that the move—which will be complete sometime next year—feels long overdue. “We have had a ton of fond memories with y’all the last 7 years, and we look forward to making more in our new space. We will keep y’all updated as best as we can with information in the short future,” Angry Chair wrote.

The move to a 15,400-square foot space means significant change for Angry Chair which currently operates within just under 3,000-square-feet. That does not mean that adult games, yoga or trivia— definitely not hallmarks of its current location—will be added.

Dowdle told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that there won’t be any fucking Jenga in the new location, but that there will be a kitchen.

He added that the move allows Angry Chair to triple its production—going from 1,400 barrels to about “4,000-ish,” and said the move will let the Angry Chair crew concentrate on more lager and IPA production. “As for core production the move will allow us to make more Spacegrass IPA, an introduce Vodnik Czech-Style Pilsner a core beer. We plan on barrel aging a little bit more of our stouts and specialty beer, but not much more,” Dowdle told CL.

Symons has still not been discovered by Broadway, but American Stage has given her a world premiere production worthy of the “Great White Way.” Set designer Scott Cooper, in particular, has created such a complete environment on a grand scale that it’s hard to imagine that an infusion of NYC cash could improve upon his design. Not that it’s particularly inviting. The peeling wallpaper, indeed the whole interior, is “the color of old pennies.” And the ever clever, Jerid Fox, has filled the design with revelatory stuff, from a multi-hued striped afghan, to the milk crate coffee table, to a diminutive garden gnome that’s obviously a treasured artifact.

Catherine Cann’s costumes nail each characters’ emotional state as does Chris Baldwin’s evocative lighting which reflects a hoarder’s despair, as well as the anticipatory joy from an unexpected emotional connection which leaves the audience with a tender sigh. And even though I’m sadly disconnected from her playlists, sound designer Rachel Harrison’s evocative music combines with Baldwin’s sweeping moving lights scene changes to hint at what’s to come.

ife has been particularly challenging for the Lisowskis of Buffalo. After the death of his wife, aging father and husband Miles (a splendid, understated Don Walker), is a lost soul. He’s barely hanging on to his job as a funeral home custodian. He fills his free time at the kitchen table listening to his transistor radio with coffee cup after cup of whiskey on an alcoholic marathon. The highlight of his half blind, agoraphobic daughter’s day is dictating random thoughts into a cassette tape for Louis, her drug lord penpal who in this case is actually serving time in the pen. The family home is in complete disrepair; piles of junk block the stairway to the upstairs bedrooms rendering the entire floor uninhabitable. The power is off and the contents of the refrigerator have spoiled. This is the stuff of soul-crushing drama à la Eugene O’Neill—except Natalie Symons’ “The People Downstairs” is an uproarious, endearing laugh-a-minute dark comedy.

Symons has the same kind of gift as Pulitzer Prize winner Beth Henley (“Crimes of the Heart”) who mines her quirky characters for both pathos and humor. The fact that both the playwright and director Chris Crawford are accomplished actors shows through in the performances of the uniformly splendid cast.

You lose yourself in these eccentric misfits and forget they’re Symons’s creations.

Symons put some zingers in the mouths of her characters (“I blame menopause for the horror show that came later,”) but director Crawford and his crackerjack cast also mine the script for physical humor and moments where the audience chortles, snorts, guffaws, or just plain laughs out loud. Maybe it’s the post-COVID release of sharing a play live and in person, but even with masks and socially distant seating, I can’t remember an opening night audience having so much fun. Indeed, the play’s themes of familial love and the search for human connection resonate ever more strongly post lockdown.

Through his alcoholic stupor, Miles nurses two obsessions. He harbors the pipe dream of his 9-and-a-half-episode biographical teleplay (where he’s portrayed by Robert De Niro) being picked up by Amazon Prime despite a Netflix rejection. In addition, Miles is desperate to

New Netflix show highlights minority Tampa women.

ampa Bay is known for being Super Bowl champions, Cuban sandwiches, and the best beaches in the country. Soon, locals and tourists alike get a peek at another side not too many get to see… unless you’re in the market for a new home.

Sharelle Rosado, broker and owner of Tampa’s Allure Realty, puts the city on the map with her Netflix show “Selling Tampa.” Similar to other Netflix hit “Selling Sunset,” the show focuses on Rosado and her team of real estate agents as they sell luxury real estate across Tampa Bay. What’s unique about her business is her team is composed of Black and minority women.

“Viewers are going to see powerful minority women stepping into luxury real estate. This shows anyone as long as you work hard and no matter what, you can do it,” said Rosado.

Rosado embarked on her journey in real estate in 2017 after her “12 years, 9 months, and 13 days” stint in the military. She opened Allure Realty in July 2019 and had a full team of agents by early 2020. Rosado said producers started approaching her that same year. She turned down several because she didn’t like their angles. She did her research on real estate producers and put herself in front of “Selling Sunset” producer Adam DiVello by doing what so many of us do on social media every now and then—dropping a series of “likes” on DiVello’s Instagram pictures.

“I put myself in front of Adam, and they reached out to me a couple days later,” Rosado said.

When the pandemic started last year, Rosado and her team didn’t slow down one bit and instead adapted by adding virtual house showings for clients. Like most other real estate groups, Allure never saw a pandemic-related sales hit. “Everyone was taking advantage of the interest rates,” said Rosado. “Financially, we didn’t get behind the power curve because we were good on that part.”

Rosado celebrated the grand opening of Allure Realty, which sits in Ybor City at 1315 7th Ave., last month with several of her agents and friends. Mayor Jane Castor, Florida State Representative Dianne Hart, and her financé former NFL wide receiver and current Cinco Soccer fan Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson were all on hand with plenty of well wishes.

So what’s next for Rosado? She just opened her second Allure Realty location in Miami and is ready to take over the world. “When I opened this business, I wanted to take it to the next level. Now, I want to go bigger,” said Rosado.

“Selling Tampa” is scheduled to debut around the end of this year or early 2022. Rosado hopes young women see the representation and understand whatever they desire to be in life is possible.

“I know they’re going to see no matter your age or color, you can go out and do it,” said Rosado. “Don’t give up because it’s a learning process.”

R.I.P. Norm Macdonald, who once roasted Florida’s swinger culture.

L

egendary writer, comedian and actor Norm Macdonald died Sept. 14 at the age of 61, after quietly battling cancer for 9 years. He leaves behind a legacy of hilarious stand up sets, TV show episodes, movies and interviews.

In 2014, he talked about doing stand-up in Florida on “The Howard Stern Show,” and being offered sex and drugs from people- against his will.

During the interview, Stern asked Norm what happened in Florida.

Norm replied, “In Florida where I just was, they have people that, I don’t know what the fuck they do, but everybody got money,” he said. “I guess they had coke for years, like, thousands of pounds of coke and I don’t know if those guys still do it, I don’t know what the fuck.”

He went on to claim that a limo driver picked him up and told him, “I can take you any place man, anything you want.”

Norm said, “What?” To which the limo driver responded, “Anything you want, I got my wife.”

“Here I am thinking he’s talking about drugs or something,” Norm says, “But he starts with his wife!”

Stern asks him, “Was he offering you his wife?” To which Norm replied, “I don’t fuckin know. But it was all weekend long, I’d meet four or five guys and they’d go, ‘Hey so huh, this is the wife and this is the other wife and uh, how about the eight of us?” Norm finished the sentence with a wide eyed stare, mimicking the husband he claimed was offering an orgy.

Norm said the pitches for the orgies were vague, “...but you kinda go, what are you talking

about? They don’t come right out and say they want to fuck ya.”

Norm wouldn’t engage in such a thing, because there might be too many surprises.

“You go, ‘What the fuck, who the fuck is this guy?,’” Norm said. “Nobody told me about a guy coming out of a closet wackin’ off with his halfcock, half-hard cock. Where the fuck did he come from?”

They dissected the culture in Florida and why the orgies happen, to which Stern co-host and comedian Artie Lange said, “There’s always a hot tub and ecstacy and pills, and they go ‘come back and we’ll all fuck’.”

Since Norm’s death last week, Hollywood has taken to social media to express condolences to a man who was an inspiration to so many.

“Let me pause my meaningless online arguments to say Norm was one of the greatest comedians to have ever lived,” comedian Tim Dillon Tweeted. “One of the best moments of my career was when he found something I did funny. Very few comics will ever possess that level of mastery. RIP.” Norm started his stand-up career in small comedy clubs around Canada. He began his career as a writer for “The Dennis Miller Show” and then “Roseanne,” before moving on to work at “Saturday Night Live.” He became widely popular in his role as the Weekend Update anchor. After SNL, Norm went on to act in several successful movies, ran a TV show and podcast, and never stopped pursuing his lifelong love of stand up comedy.

Because of him, I’ll never be able to look at a moth the same again.

Nebraska rock band 311—which has a rich history of playing small shows in Tampa thanks to its partnership with Rock Brother Brewing Co.—was supposed to celebrate its 30th anniversary of bandom with a big tour in 2020 before coronavirus but the kibosh on it all. Well, don’t stay home any longer because 311 has booked a 36-date tour, which includes this stop. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)—Ray Roa The Dead Daisies This self-described “supergroup” plays Sunset Strip rock and roll, and while the band members are unfamiliar, they’ve all played the fame game at some point thanks to stints with mega groups like Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, and Journey.

Though not at all a tribute act, thanks to a handful of original albums, the high-octane (read: “Kickstart my Heart”) version of “Fortunate Son” gets the most streaming love. The unnecessarily all ages show starts with comedy from Don Jamieson, the former host of VH1’s “That Metal Show.” (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

C Cannibal Kids w/Animal Sun/ Discord Theory When you grow up in the Death Metal Capital of the World, you think you know what you’re getting from any band with the word “cannibal” in its name.

But Cannibal Kids surprised me in a good way. I wasn’t expecting the nice indie-soul thing it has going on. The South Florida act just started its “Neon City” national tour with Los Angeles indie-pop act Animal Sun, and this West River show has local favorite Discord Theory opening. The Aestheticized Presents show requires a negative COVID19 test or proof of vaccination. Let’s show our guests from California that some of Florida knows how to behave. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)

C Lindsey Buckingham Over the last year, Lindsey Buckingham got booted from

Fleetwood Mac, had emergency open heart surgery, and, as a result of the surgery, temporarily lost his singing voice. Just this month, Stevie Nicks eviscerated him in the press. Still, slowly but surely, he’s been making his way back into the music biz as a solo artist. This is part of the 71-yearold’s first tour since he had the surgery that nearly ended his touring career, and his first time in Florida since a 2018 stop at the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre—then known as just the Capitol Theatre. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)—Josh Bradley C The Nude Party w/Twen/Johnny Mile and the Kilometers North Carolina’s premier purveyor of Farfisa-driven, rowdy rock and roll is finally pulling the van into Tampa Bay. The Nude Party is no stranger to Tampa Bay, having played Gasparilla Music Festival in 2020 (and an afterparty at The Bricks), just before the world shut down. Before that, the band opened for Dr. Dog at Orpheum in October 2018, headlined Crowbar seven months prior and even rocked St. Petersburg’s tiny dive bar The Bends in 2016. The Arizona band has made it through some tough times including the 2014 death of its original lead singer in 2014, and got back together in 2019, with a few new members. C Bleachers w/Claud This tour flies under the “Take the Sadness Out Of Saturday Night” title, but there’s going to be a lot of Bleachers fans sad and at home on Wednesday since the gig is totally soldout. It’s a bummer, too, because while Bleachers’ Jack Atonoff is having one hell of a year (thanks, Taylor), the show’s opener, Claud, has also been enjoying quite the ride since February when they released Super Monster, an album of hyphy, melancholic pop on Phoebe Bridgers’ new Saddest Factory imprint. Tampa Bay’s Next Big Thing concert is almost enough to drink, and to celebrate, organizer 97X is bringing in Twenty One Pilots and Weezer to headline the 2-day party happening in Tampa this winter.

Twenty One Pilots will headline night one, Dec. 3, and play alongside Glass Animals and Meet Me @ The Altar.

Weezer is the headliner on a more robust night two, Dec. 4, where the bill also includes AJR, All Time Low, Bastille, Girl in Red, Mod Sun (also playing Gasparilla Music Festival next month), Nessa Barrett, Girlfriends, Daisy the Great and Upshal.

Andrew McMahon is the guest co-host of the 97X Next Big Thing, and I’m still old enough to remember singing along to his band Something Corporate.

What’s more is that 20th anniversary of Next Big Thing will require all attendees to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of the event; in lieu of a negative text, attendees may also prove they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (14 days past final vaccination shot) and present a vaccination card at the door. Parents should note that children under 12 years of age will also be required to take a COVID-19 test within 72-hours before the event and will provide proof of negative result prior to entering the venue where mask wearing will be encouraged.

It’s something that I’ve dealt with my entire life, though I feel like I was better at managing it in college and when I was a younger adult. Now, as an adult with more responsibilities, I feel like I can barely handle what’s considered a “normal load” of things. I like my job, like my hobbies, so it’s not that. It just feels like everything is always happening at warp speed, and I have difficulty keeping up. I have ADHD, and I know that plays a factor in it, but do you have any advice on feeling less like a hamster on a wheel?—All Work And No Play Makes Jane Cry in The Bathroom A Lot Cards: Waxing Gibbous, Knight of Swords reversed, Knight of Pentacles.

Dear Sweet Jane, I’m so sorry that you’re feeling overwhelmed, and if it’s any comfort to you, I think a lot of us are feeling that way, myself included. However, before I get into the cards, I want to mention that as a fellow member of the ADHD tribe, feeling overwhelmed is a common symptom of our condition. For adults with ADHD, sensory processing disorder—when our senses are literally overwhelmed—is very typical. Mix that in with rejection sensitivity and emotional dysregulation, and you got yourself a case of chronic overwhelmedness.

I bring these medical issues up because if you see a psychiatrist for your ADHD, you should talk to them about these symptoms. I am not a doctor of any kind, so they be able to offer medication to help it.

Now, metaphysically, we have three cards that all deal with chaos in some way. First, the Waxing Gibbous is a time to reevaluate plans.

Do you put too many things on your to-do list?

Do you neglect some of your basic needs (eating, sleeping, showering) to get everything done?

If so, take some non-basic needs off your to-do list. Maybe don’t finish the whole book for book club. Maybe do a 10-minute workout instead of a 30-minute one. Give yourself time to decompress and, ideally, get bored.

Because that Knight of Swords is all intellect, and it’s galloping at a million miles per hour. Your brain is breaking the sound barrier when it comes to speed, and you’re probably burning yourself out. So you have to ground yourself, you live wire.

The Knight of Pentacles is also riding a demon horse from hell, but he’s calm amongst the chaos. He waits for his bucking bronco to calm down before forging ahead. What helps you feel grounded? Is it a routine? A run? An alarm that reminds you to eat dinner?

Adapt to your days. Sometimes, you’re going to be overwhelmed, and there’s no pushing forward, and sometimes, with a grounding break,

you might be able to get back at it. Listen to your body and brain and talk to your doctors about this. Remember, one step at a time. Best of luck, my dear.

Dear Oracle, I have a friend, “Hannah,” who I love dearly. She’s smart, funny, the KINDEST person in the entire world, and incredibly beautiful. Unfortunately, like a lot of smart, beautiful women, she dates absolute jerks. Some dudes have been BAD, but most just suck and are kind of fuck-ups. Hannah falls in love quickly, but when things go south, she spends forever deciding whether or not to break up with them...which means hours-long conversations on the phone, or when we hang out. I feel bad saying this, but I’m exhausted. It’s hard out here for a single girl, and if you’re in a lousy pond, there can be some gnarly fish hanging around.

But I also sympathize with you. It’s hard to watch people we love make decisions that hurt themselves, and it doesn’t not make you a bad friend for wanting to pull a Cher in "Moonstruck” on Hannah—it just isn’t good if you actually do that.

With the Three of Cups, it’s clear that you love Hannah. You’re a grounding force for her, and there is joy in your relationship, not just unpaid therapy sessions. But you do watch her make a lot of destructive choices (Seven of Cups reversed) and deal with the depression of that fallout (Eight of Swords). I don’t think it’s terrible

to tell a friend that you’re worried about her or to speak up about red flags if you see them. But if you’re going to be honest, you need to be tactful.

It serves no one to be cruel or judgmental, and if you are, you could alienate Hannah—which you don’t want to do if she’s in an abusive relationship.

I don’t know if that’s what you meant by “BAD,” but if so, that takes this from “annoying” to “dangerous.” Encourage Hannah to seek a therapist, and set boundaries if you need—say a 15-minute phone call—but if she’s experiencing abuse, open communication can be a lifeline. Ask open-ended questions, offer solutions but try not to sound preachy about it. The National Domestic Abuse Hotline [800.799.SAFE (7233)] has information on their website about helping loved ones who are in those situations.

This is a very tricky conversation to have and I hope that if Hannah is struggling, she would feel comfortable to reach out to you.

I’m a 26-year-old masculine straight guy who loves exploiting the fantasies so many gay men have about straight men. When a gay guy is into me because I look like his straight-masculine-jock dream, it’s a power trip like no other. It’s always a specific type of bottom gay dude I seek out when I get on Grindr: a very feminine “thicc” guy with a pretty face and physical features begging for a dick.

The kind of guy where from the right angles you can’t tell the difference between his big ass and a thicc chick’s big ass. And I always follow the same script: I send my dick pics, I make one of these thicc bottom boys want me, and I tell him to send me a video of him twerking like a stripper for me. But I don’t go through with the meetup.

I’ve experimented a few times and have gotten head from a few guys, but I have no interest in dick or fucking one of these dudes. I don’t want to harm anyone or live a lie, but I don’t feel queer or bisexual at all. I actually feel like I’m “earning my heterosexuality” when I do this. It’s like I’m proving to myself just how straight I am by teasing these gay guys. And in all honestly, I feel like I’m doing them a service because a lot of gay guys are looking for that rare, mythical thing—the straight and strict Dom top—and I can play that role. But on some level, this all seems pretty fucked up, and I don’t know why I do this and sometimes I’m confused by it. I also worry this comes from a homophobic place. (“Look at this dumb twink, he’s so stupid and obsessed with dick he’ll do whatever I tell him to, I’m the alpha.”) And I guess it is homophobic because when you remove the intensity and power trip of being the straight male in this scenario, I just have no interest in guys at all. “We all enter Grindr chats willingly, and we should do so knowing that anyone we talk to may have no plans of following through with their promises to meet,” said Cheves. “Many queer men do the same—talk and tease with no intention of meeting—and for similar reasons.

The guys he is messaging are chatting with him consensually, so I don’t see any consent violations.”

Now if you were uploading or sharing the video clips these guys make for you without their knowledge, ALPHA, that would be a very serious consent violation.

It would also be a crime in many places. But if feeling powerful and/or powerfully-desired is all you want, ALPHA, and these femme thicc boys are willing to meet that need for you, and you’re meeting a need for them, there’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing.

“Even the homophobia bit is not alarming to me,” said Cheves. “Shame, stigma, and prejudice have their place in many fetishes. I think these things often lead to fetishes in the first place. So long as ALPHA isn’t committing violence against these men or causing them harm, I don’t mind that he likes degrading them. I like guys who degrade me and call me a faggot, and I don’t much care if this fun part of my sex life comes from latent homophobia in me or the men I play with.”

There’s a big difference between screaming homophobic slurs at someone on the street and seeking out gay men who enjoy what linguist John McWhorter described on my podcast as “theatrical subjugation.” While homophobia unquestionably shaped the desires of the men who find your schtick appealing, O N ALPHA, you’re not promoting homophobia or justifying homophobic violence. Indeed, implicit in stepping into these roles—straight alpha top, gay submissive bottom—is your ability and, even more importantly, their ability to step right back out of these roles. While playing erotic games with homophobic themes won’t eradicate homophobia from the earth (wouldn’t it be nice if it could?), a gay guy who consents to this kind of “abuse” gets to decide when it starts and when it stops.

feel the need to do that or thinks doing so would be disingenuous—indeed, if he must be straight for this kink to work—then he’s straight. As long as he’s doing no harm—just having hot, consensual Grindr chats with guys before ghosting them—he can be whatever feels true for him.”
